Inquiring about a recall notice received back in feb. 2016 and still no info. On fixing airbag problem.do not understand why toyota is taking so long to get parts out to local dealershipsto fix a dangerous problem.
In miami, fl. At intersection of waterway drive and sw. 72 ave. Made left turn under rain, (all day raining) i lost control of the vehicle after turn. Came to a stand still and momentarily, i accelerated towards a tree aprox. 15 feet away, vehicle crashed against tree so severely that passenger side of frame bent bad (declared total lost by state farm insurance). Air bag did not deploy. I hit my against head against the windshield, hit steering wheel with rib cage, i was taken to south miami hospital emergency room. After two cat scans and two x-rays i was sent home to follow- up with my primary care physician i am still in pain mainly neck an shoulders and lately my lower back. Still have trouble sleeping, etc. Cannot do house chores. Pcp forbidden any type of exercise for the time being. Please advise. I surrendered the car to state farm insurance but did not sign the title over to them yet. I was unable to drive for over a month. Thanks in advance. Please contact me...updated 01/14/15
Nhtsa recall number: 16v065 recall date: february 2, 2016 - it has been 10 months since this recall was issued with no resolution by toyota.my complaint is the amount of time it is taking to fix this recall and/or trying to ignore it because my vehicle is an older model.
Cracks in the dashboard began to appear of which i first noticed after 90k miles in the area of the fr passenger air bag.i first thought the air bag may be defective and ready to explode.as the cracks increased in number and size, they began to appear all over the dashboard.i notified both the local dealer and the main toyota office in california, they made an offer to replace the dashboard but i would have to cover more than half of the cost.they did not admit to any problem that toyota is responsible for.i was informed though that toyota used recycled plastics in the manufacturer of some of the interior parts.at that point, being uneducated in the use of recycled plastics i began to do some research and, this is what i found;toyota has used recycled plastics for the manufacturer of its automobile and truck parts for sometime and are considered experts in the recycling field. I also found that due to environmental concerns we have different types of recycled plastics being used "virgin, recycled and degradable."this has presented a problem of which my toyota 4runner is a victim, through no fault of my own.the users of recycled plastics in the manufacture of long life span products (my dashboard) has to be sure that degradable (short life span) plastics feedstocks do not get mixed in together.what you have if you allow this to happen is a dashboard that disintegrates before its time, like a bottle made to be disposed of in a landfill.i believe this happened since toyota is in the business of using all of the different types of plastics feedstocks for manufacturing including creating equipment that is used in all aspects of the recycling industry.i believe this is a safety issue since a faulty, disintegrating dashboard could affect the safe use of my airbag in the case of an accident. The correction of this should not be on the consumer.
My vehicle has been preforming perfectly with no accidents or other collisions until the other day, when i turned on the vehicle and the check airbag light was on.i took it to the dealer and they said that there was a faulty wire and that the airbag was partially deployed and that i would have to replace the entire air bag unit.the dealer stated that because the car was out of warranty, that i would have to pay for all repairs.the car is undriveable because of an internal defect and not because of any fault of my own.this is toyota's responsibility to correct.
The frame on my 2005 toyota 4runner is severely rusted. I have had multiple pieces fall off my suv, some while driving. This includes the front skid plate, transmission lines, and other small components. The frame on my suv is coming apart. Rather large pieces are 'flaking' off. It is plain to see where the metal is separating. I recently discovered that the front impact sensors have rusted loose of the frame and are now dangling free.this leaves my suv susceptible to the airbags not inflating during a front-end crash. The above has been occurring over the last few years. I have opened case #1707170870 with toyota, but they have told me that there is no remedy for my vehicle.
Toyota 4runner was stopped at red light and was rearended by a chevrolet s10 and caused the 4runner to slam into the chrysler suv in front at light. The 4runner and s10 were both totaled. The 4runner front airbags did not deploy and both occupants suffered cuts and bruises along with whiplash and minor neck injuries.
A small crack started to appear on the dashboard above the instrument panel back on may of 2011. As time passes by the crack has been growing past the top part of the gauges towards the passenger side.new cracks have also appeared around the air vents, above the radio and the passenger air bag area.i have tinted windows and always use a sun visor when vehicle is parked.i believe this is caused by the swelling of the high density foam used to manufacture the dashboard.
Air bag warning light does not turn off.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v065000 (air bags); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
This toyota dealer at plaza toyota 2699 nostrand aveue brooklynnew york 11210told me there is a recall on my 2005 toyota 4runner sr5 4.0l v6 . Isaid to the service manager what recall i never get a letter from nhtsa stating that. Can you verify if this toyota hasa recall thank you for your cooperation
Air bag warning light is on,always on, in motion, park. It won't go off.
I own a 2005 4runner sport 4.7l. I bought it brand new from gene reed toyota in charleston, sc. This is not my daily driver and stays in the garage most of the times. It only has 59k on it. This past weekend i was dusting it off getting ready for a sunday drive and noticed a crack starting at the gauges and following the curve on the dash all the way over to the top of the radio. I just drove it a week ago and that was not there. I have never used any chemicals on my dash, only a damp cloth.at first glance i thought it was a factory seam. I pulled it out of the garage and into the sunlight where i could see it better and sure enough you could see the yellow foam inside the crack. I went to google the problem and could not believe my eyes at all the same, exact problems that were going on. There are thousands of complaints with the 4runner's dash cracking for no apparent reason. I am very disappointed in toyota with the quality of materials that they used to make this dash pad. My vehicle is in mint condition and has been garage kept it's entire life.this seems to be happening mostly to the 2003-2005 4runner's all over the country. I have read that other owner's have contacted their dealership and toyota motor sales usa, inc. About the problem and they have all refused to do anything about it. This needs to be resolved by toyota because i have noticed the crack is getting bigger when it expands in the heat of the sun. The dash pad goes directly over the passenger side airbag and if the cracking continues it could make the airbag malfunction and deploy unexpectedly. I have read other 4runner owner's are very worried that the cracking dash will effect the airbag too.toyota could at least pay half for the part and let a toyota tech install it.
We have a 2005 toyota 4-runner. I was involved in an accident that did $12,000.00 worth of damage. I basically fell asleep at the wheel drifted across the highway and took out 7 metal guard rail poles with wires in between and the air bag never deployed.
Driver's air bag failed to deploy following a direct front collision having extensive damage to bumper and motor on a 2005 toyota 4runner.
I was in a 4 car pile up andhit the car in front and was also rearended. Myhood wentup fromthe impact and my head hit the dash or steeringwheel. The doors were jammed shut and i had to be pried out bythe fire dept.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4 runner. The contact stated that when the air bag sensor light came on, the light disabled the air bags. The contact spoke with toyota and they would not repair the air bag sensor. The contact stated that a local dealer was able to repair the vehicle after one year. The current mileage was 19,000. The failure mileage was 9,310. The consumer took the vehicle to another dealer after the first dealer was unable to correct the problem after several visits. The second dealer installed a new sensor. The consumer stated the problem was resolved. Updated 03/26/10

After my rear window shattered while sitting in a parking lot for a few minutes, i had it replaced. The technician found that the connections for the rear window defogger were burned. This caused great heat to build up, causing the window to shatter.
The rear window exploded on it's own with glass shattering everywhere while the defrost function was on. This is a very serious safety issue and design flaw that should be remedied before it happens. Toyota acknowledges the design flaw yet allows this dangerous occurrence to happen with consumers before doing anything about it. They say to bring it in for inspection but nothing that they can see until it has exploded. Toyota customer service representative named ryan informed me today there is nothing toyota can do for me. They need to reimburse consumers for replacement no matter the time frame because it is a serious safety issue and it is a design flaw!
Defrost cables connected to the rear window malfunction and cause the rear window to explode. Initial sign is the smell of burning plastic a short while before the window exploded. This occurred with the defrost being off in 74 degree weather. Vehicle was stationary and parked in driveway for 2 minutes before it shattered. Based online searches, many other 4runner owners have had their rear windows explode due to the same problem, both while driving and parked.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While operating the vehicle, an electrical burning odor was present. After stopping to inspect the vehicle, the rear window suddenly shattered. While replacing the window, the contact discovered melted and charred heater wires that were connected to the rear window. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 216,000.
The vehicle rpms would go up but the car would barley move, or while driving going to accelerate the vehicle would not go faster to engage in traffic, corrosion ofpins in the transmission wiring harness that connects to the engine wiring harness. This harness is also tied to the abs, traction control. It causes the vehicle to become unsafe when driving as if it acts up you cannot accelerate and sort of chugs along. Dangerous in on ramp and traffic situations. This also caused the solenoid in the transmission to short out as it was hanging up on the shift which caused a clunking sound. The transmission wire harness was replaced which showed 3 corroded pins. The solenoid in the transmission was also replaced.
Defect occurs during winter conditions only.while stopped & icy conditions exist, the vehicle has excessive hesitation when the gas pedal is depressed.the computer control allows the vehicle to move forward very slowly for at least 5 to 10 seconds after the pedal is depressed.when at a stop sign or light, this condition has lead to close calls while i have inched into the intersection. Not having the ability to accelerate to avoid oncoming vehicles has been problematic.the dealer noted the vehicle is working properly. The mechanics noted another customer had their vehicle in for the same issue & told him the same thing.note that this condition has occurred each winter since i purchased the vehicle, but there appeared to be little that the dealer would "fix" since they did not believe there was a problem.i have assumed the root problem is with the computer control system, but i am not a mechanic.
The toyota secondary air system has failed rendering my car without traction control... And other lights.there is no preventative measures for this part and toyota used the exact same system on the tundra's and sequoia's with the same problem i'm having.this needs to be addressed as the repair for the system is roughly 4000.00 almost half the cost of my car... Please make them fix this on all cars where the same system was used.
While making a left turn at a controlled (light) intersection, my rear wheel skidded slightly on the wet pavement. At that point the abs system kicked in and totally locked up the left rear wheel causing the vehicle to spin 180 degrees and tearing the right rear tire completely off the wheel. During this spin i had absolutely no control over the vehicle which ended up crossing the highway divider before coming to rest in the lane of the opposing traffic. Fortunately no vehicles happened to be in that lane at the time or there would have been a very seriousaccident. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest toyota dealer who claimed that a check of the computer revealed no erroneous message from the abs system, leading them to conclude that there was no equipment failure despite the obvious evidence of the tire having been torn off the wheel. I feel that if this had occurred at even a moderately higher speed the vehicle would have overturned, and if it had occurred at highway speed would have led to serious injuries or fatalities. Once i described the incident as a serious safety issue the dealer refused to work on the car claiming legal liability concerns.
I'm a retired master mechanic turned aerospace engineer. On aug 24, while my foot was on the brake, the engine revved to full throttle, squealing the rear tires. This event was clearly caused by a faulty electronic throttle control circuit. I shut off the truck. When i started it again, the situation was still there. I shut it off and waited 10 seconds, then started it and it idled normally. I concluded that there was a software glitch. This happened once before about two years ago.in both cases, my truck was luckily stopped in a parking lot with the transmission in drive.
Severe corrosion of frame at the rear body mount location. The body of the vehicle is no longer secured to the frame at this location due to the severe rust.significant rust also on the front cross frame member which has the tow mounts rendering them useless and unsafe.cracked exhaust manifold causing excessive engine noise and exhaust fumes.this is a time consuming and costly repair.
Head gaskets leaking anti -freeze into piston cylinder. Dashboard lit up , all lights on.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving at any speed, the check engine indicator illuminated and remained lit. The vehicle was taken to ackerman toyota (314-351-3000, located at 2020 hampton ave, saint louis, mo 63139) where it was diagnosed that the air switching valves needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the exhaust manifold and the air switching valves were replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 172,000.
2005 toyota 4runner 4.7l v8. "check engine" and vsc trac. Codes 1441, 1444 and 2440.toyota knows they put a faulty secondary air injection system in the v8 engines for a number of years, and now they want $2200 to fix the problem. If the faulty valve sticks open, the vehicle will automatically go into "limp mode" with a maximum speed well below safe travel speeds on highways and interstates, creating a safety hazard for occupants and others on the road. Toyota did a recall on other models with the same engine, but nothing for the 4runner.this is a know issue with the v8 engine, and they are covering the repair for sequoias and tundras with the same engine.
The secondary air injection pump is sending error messages and the vehicle is now in limp mode. The vehicle will not go over 30mph.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and failed to slow down when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact mentioned that after shifting in neutral the vehicle slowed down. The vehicle was then maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was shut off. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and then to the dealer. The mechanic noticed metal fragments in the engine oil. The contact was made aware that the vehicle was included in recall nhtsa campaign id number: 11v113000 (vehicle speed control). However, the contact did not receive a recall notification prior to the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
Leaking exhaust manifolds due to faulty design this is on the v8 4runner. Exhaust will go into the cabin of the vehicle and smell like rotten eggs.toyota will not help in the replacement of these manifolds. The charge is 2500 to replace. There is a technical service bulletin on this issue. It is hard to drive with exhaust leaking in the cab sometimes getting sick.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle lost power. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The check engine and vsc warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an auto store where a technician pulled up diagnostic trouble codes. The contact spoke with a local dealer who stated that, based on the codes provided, the vehicle would be repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 05v123000 (engine and engine cooling). The vin was not included. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 103,000.
Stationary on startup - my 2005 toyota has been rendered worthless because of a factory defect in the blower fan that only runs when cold starting the engine. It triggers the "limp home" mode in the vehicle which overrides transmission shifting and makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. The error code for this problem is p0418 secondary air injection system relay. This is a well-known problem and has occurred in many, many of the toyota 4.7 l engines in different vehicles. Toyota is aware of this defect in this/these part(s). This could not be predicted or prevented by servicing the vehicle at regular intervals, or any other method of typical consumer maintenance. The price for repair is in the $3-thousand dollar range. This was not a consumer neglect item. Toyota has a part in their engine that is defective, and they know that. I do not have that kind of money for this vehicle, so i use a computer to reset the code until this gets resolved, or the vehicle completely shuts down.
The toyota secondary air system has failed rendering my car without traction control... My check engine light came on along with vsc trac. After taking vehicle to dealership i was told that the repair would cost $2,048.73 due to the air pump being stuck in off position. While toyota in response to reports of air induction pump assemblies and/or air injection switching valves issues on their 2007-2010 tundra and 2008-2010 sequoia models, toyota has decided to increase its warranty on these parts and is even offering a reimbursement if you already had this issue fixed. My vehicle has the identical engine of the above-named vehicles but toyota does not offer any help with the 4runner. It is my understanding that if i do not get the problem fixed it becomes a huge problem within federally mandated emissions requirement.
Oil leak in #6 cylinder after 182,505 miles requiring an valve job.
For 3 days the car would start with engine roughness, lasting 15 seconds or so (sometimes with a cloud of smoke from the exhaust). On the 3rd day the check engine light, vsc, and trac lights illuminated. An analysis at an independent repair shop found a computer code of p0306 (engine mis-fire on cylinder 6). A borescope video of the cylinder shows small amounts of coolant entering the cylinder, indicating a head gasket leak. Searching this vehicle online and in this database shows a high number of reports of head gaskets leaking into cylinder 6. I am looking at quotes between $2500-5000 for repairs.
2005 toyota 4runner 4.7l v8."check engine" and vsc trac. Codes 1441, 1444 and 2440 vehicle went into limp mode on the highway and i was unable to accelerate about 20 mph on a 70 mph highway. Major safety issue.this is a known issue with the toyota v8 but toyota is not covering the 4runner but is covering the same engine part in the tundra.the mechanic knew exactly what the problem was and sees it all the time. Repair is $2,000 with no reimbursement from toyota
Engine loosing coolant.vehicle brought to an independent service station which determined that the vehicle has head gasket failure. 3.0 v6 engine. Coolant being lost through exhaust system with usual symptoms of this problem.vehicle has just over 100k miles. Appears this is around the mileage that gasket failures occur.this is a problem for which toyota previously identified a limited number of vehicles for a recall.however in reviewing this website it appears the problem was ongoing beyond the vehicles identified.although this is an older vehicle, if it had been recalled and fixed i most likely would not have had this problem.toyota notified but is denying any responsibility for faulty gaskets beyond identified vehicles.
Secondary air pump failure due to defective design. Toyota has acknowledged this as a defective installation on the sequoia and tundra models with an identical engine installation as the 4runner; but refuses to repair/retrofit the 4runner device. Result is loss of power which could result on vehicle accident
If the back window is open and the air handler is on recurculate exhaust gets pulled into the car.
2005 toyota 4 runner exhaust manifold cracks.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota runner. The contact stated that the check engine light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was advised that the air induction pump failed. In addition, the contact stated that the secondary air injection switch was also damaged as a result of the air induction pump failure. The air induction pump was replaced but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who advised the contact that there were no recalls for the failure and offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was 90,000.
V8, 4wd.idle rpm is way too high.when a/c compressor kicks in idle can be as high as 1500 rpm.have to be very careful pulling into garage, as the brake is very difficult to modulate at that rpm.twice into dealer for this and told "...it is normal".wife afraid to drive into the garage and i have to be very aware when a/c is on.have never seen a vehicle idle at this high an rpm.difficult to hold at stop sign and will idle away at a good pace with no accelerator applied.
Oil leak caused fire melting serpentine belt.
Rotten egg smell while driving. (cat converter).
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that years ago, an independent mechanic discovered severe corrosion on the undercarriage of the vehicle. The contact recently had a fuel leak failure which she linked to the corrosion on the vehicle. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer had been notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. *ln
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 30-35 mph, the contact noticed a chemical odor. If the windows were open, the smell seemed stronger. The contact stated that because of the smell, he had to take medication. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer six times but the failure could not be remedied. The contact was advised to change the type of fuel he did but the odor was still present. The contact called the manufacturer who also stated that he to change the fuel type. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 6 and the current mileage was 48,200.updated 02/02/11
Extensive, rapidly spreading rust throughout the vehicle's frame and fuel tank supports leaving little or nothing holding the fuel tank or areas of the suspension together. Vehicle cannot be safely placed on a lift for service because of thin metal in the bottom of the frame. .

The emergency bake on my toyota 4runner-2005 do not hold .the vehicle can be driven foward or in reverse with the emergency brakes on.mileage on the vehicle is 33,000. Miles. The dealer on several occasions was requested to fix the brakes to no avail. I was told that that the way they are & live with them.
Ststionary rear axel housing rusted -leaking oil-inferior steal just like the frame that was replaced
Excessive frame rust and underbody rust.most weld points and frame assembly is degrading from rust.transmission coolant lines have cracked and leaked.
The rear axle rusted so badly that it started flaking apart. The frame is rusted severely in the areas where the rear suspension components attach. The gas tank skid plate rusted until it began to fall off while driving down the road and all of the areas where it was bolted to the frame completely rusted out.the exhaust also rusted through behind the muffler causing it to fall off while driving down the road. There are holes in multiple areas of the frame. I had to grind, chip, and wire brush the frame with the vehicle on jack stands in order to repaint everything and keep my vehicle going. This took over 100 hours of labor just to compete. I also had to replace the exhaust and the gas tank skid plate. All of the bolts for the skid plates on the bottom of the vehicle were completely rusted through and could not be removed without falling apart and leaving half the bolt in the frame. The xreas suspension system which runs hydraulic lines around the frame also rusted apart and leaked fluid all over everything. The bolts were all heavily rusted and could not be removed to get the lines off the frame. The frame on this vehicle was not adequately coated to prevent it from rusting. This needed to be done with approximately 100,000 miles on the vehicle.
Excessive underbody rust, rusting frame joints, and rotting frame members from the inside out.
2005 toyota 4runner sr5 was taken into a certified toyota mechanic for inspection and the mechanic showed me the undercarriage of the vehicle, namely the frame and other associated parts. He warned that it would be difficult to perform maintenance on the vehicle if the frame is rotted through. The vehicle was put on a lift for inspection.
When coming to a stop vehicle tends to shift into first gear late, right at stopping and it feels like a bump or someone hitting you from behind.this depends on how fast the vehicle is stopped.if stopped faster, the vehicle never shifts into first gear at stopping.after thebrake is released the vehicle feels as if shifting from second to first gear.manually down shifting the vehicle in all gears feels normal except from second to first.there is a hesitation between these gears, the vehicle coast as if in neutral for about two seconds then shifts into first gear.this website also describes the "bump" feel from other owners, search for "bump"http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0dacc5/175.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. When the vehicle came to a complete stop, there was a two second delay before the vehicle jolted. The contact stated that it felt as though someone had rear-ended the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently and became progressively worse over time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the driveshaft was lubricated; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Excesive rust under body. Exhaust system and frame.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle lost power. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. Vehicle has very excessive frame rust. Holes throughout entire frame making the vehicle unsafe to drive. Rusting from the inside out due to negligence on toyotas part. This vehicle has the same exact frame that was recalled on the tacomas, tundras and sequoias. Please tell me why the 4runner was left out?
Low mileage car and parts of the frame are falling a part. Dealer refuses to service car as it is unsafe. Toyota says they have no problems with the 4runners rusting just there trucks at this time...?
2005 toyota 4-runner sport edition.had car parked in driveway.car was in park with no key in the ignition.4-year old child climbed into car and put car gear-shft into neutral (no key in ignition and foot was not on brake pedal).car rolled out of driveway into a busy road.another car nearly hit the 4-runner.driver of other vehicle stopped and halted other traffic by honking their horn.owner of 4-runner heard honking, came out of house and found 4-runner sitting across the road with the 4-year old child still in it.condition of putting 4-runner into neutral without key or foot on brake pedal was tested several more times and found to be repeatable.
I am writing today to alert you to a potential accelerator problem with the 2005 toyota 4runner suv. In mid-december, my husband and i were driving on the highway when the car inexplicably accelerated, going from approximately 40 mph to about 60 mph within a matter of seconds. My husband, who has had professional driving instruction, put the car into neutral and was able to slow the car down, at which point the accelerator (which was moving towards the floor without a foot on it) popped back up and the brakes began working again. However, within this same journey, this same accelerator program occurred two additional times.we immediately took the suv to toyota of alexandria in virginia and explained what happened. They notified us that our car was not subject to a recall for accelerator problems but, based on our concerns, agreed to examine the suv. To their credit, they did call in a corporate inspector to examine the dissembled drive train who in turn determined that an accumulation of oil in the differentials caused the cars computer to misread acceleration and deceleration information. Despite this diagnosis -- and subsequent replacement of the drive train and rear differentials -- toyota mechanics were never able to replicate the acceleration problem that we experienced. After talking to several toyota representatives, as well as a number of independent mechanics, we were advised to pursue arbitration with toyota and are currently entrenched in that process. In the interim, we are using the car only for local journeys our of concern that this accelerator problem could reoccur. I am writing today to inform you of the problem so that you have a record that toyota's accelerator problems may extend beyond the cars/suvs included in the recent recall.
Driveshaft clunks after coming to a stop also on acceleration from a stop.
Several times a day when i come to a stop in my 2005 4runner i hear a clunk and it feels like someone has just rear ended me.this has happened since i bought the vehicle and is getting worse. Lexus has a tsb for this exact same complaint yet toyota products do not.why is that?tsb#dl002-07.
I have a 2005 toyota 4runner and it has a loud clunk in the drivetrain every time i stop.when it clunks it also lunges forward causing a few close calls i have addressed this issue with toyota and they say it is a normal operating characteristic. The problem occurs in the 03-06 4runners,tacomas and lexus gx470 toyota has a t.s.b on the lexus model only not the toyota 4runners or tacomas which means at least to me that it is a defect!!! i have contacted the dealership and they say their is no tsb so they cant do anythingi contacted toyota and got no response. If they will fix the lexus version why not the toyota version???
When bringing vehicle to a stop, there is a very loud clunk that can be physically felt shuddering through the entire vehicle.many many trips to the dealer resulted in nothing.there is a tsb for the lexus equivalent of the 4runner with this problem.this means they admit there is a problem, but refuse to acknowledge it on non-lexus vehicles.unacceptable.if the driveshaft is impacting that hard every time the vehicle stops, it is a matter of time before excessive wear will cause a safety issue.
1. Happened since about 15-20k miles on my 2005 4runner (i'm the first and only owner).2. Occurs when coming to a stop, large clunk sound and vehicle jolts forward right after a full stop.3. Nothing has been done to correct the failure.each time the toyota dealer service tech takes it for a ride they cannot replicate it, i went once and was not able to replicate it at that time.however, there are numerous online forum discussions about the issue (see this one: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/4runner/53302-4runner-v8-clunk-in-drivetrain/).apparently a recall fix for the lexus 470 (same as a toyota 4runner like mine) has been provided for lexus owners but not for toyota owners.the parts to solve the issue are identical.toyota dealer service department stated unless toyota motor corp. Actually issues a recall and provides details on a fix, they are not able to do anything since we cannot replicate it when they are servicing my 4runner.
In general, when i pull up to a stop i sometimes feel a clunk. Then, when i start again, it feels like the brake release is delayed with another clunk. There's a few lexus gx470 owners (same engine and drivetrain as 4runner) that are complaining at other sites. I've been told the two piece driveshaft gets air compressed inside, and when the compression leaks out, you get the clunk.lexus is apparently fixing the problem.
Seat belt (male) failed to latch into rear driver side (female) assembly. We use all three rear seats for our three children ages 6, 5 & 4. This is our 5 year old sons, who is autistic, spot in the car. Any change is difficult for him to cope with.
2005 toyota 4runner sport edition:front driver seat faulty.seat shifts upon breaking & acceleration.safety concern/issue.
Driver's seat on new 2005 toyota sr5 4runner rocks and shifts back and forth while driving. Dealer has already replaced seat linkage and frame assembly and seat movement has gradually returned in a very short time period.dealership tried to call it a normal condition prior to replacing saying that all seats in 4runner's on the lot were loose from the factory.as vehicle is driven and weight of driver shifts back and forth from stops and starts, linkage in seat weakens and works loose.very poor design.condition is very dangerous and safety should be toyota's #1 concern but obviously not yet.
I purchased this beautiful used black 2005 4runner in october of 2016 and the body still looks beautiful - no visible rust anywhere on doors etc - but i took it in to auto craftsmen in montpelier, vt to check my brakes and replace a couple of bulbs to get the vehicle ready for vermont state inspection as the car is due for inspection in feb 2018 and i wanted to head up any maintenance needed. Was shocked when i went back and craftsmen told me not to put any money into the vehicle - that the frame was broken, had major hole in it and that the frame was too rusty to patch the hole - holy unexpected batman.partial notes from craftsmen auto on 12/28/2017 are as follows:"under body is very rusty & the frame is broken...muffler is broken off and every flange is rusted and leaking...brakes are shaking when applied...rotors have a significant rust ridge...the brake lines are very rusty...because of the broken frame and the amount of rust on the underbody, it won't pass vt state inspection the end of feb."i bought this vehicle in a private sale in october of 2016 for $7,200 but had to pay sales tax to the vermont dmv for a vehicle purchased for $8,000 because it was in great shape, looked terrific and was supposedly worth that extra money.i ad spent that money expecting to get a three or four years out of the vehicle and have maintained it well with synthetic oil changes and using expensive gas when it's cold out and spent $850 on new tires just this fall.i love toyota. My disabled husband and my two daughters all drive (used) toyotas (two priuses and a corolla). Am wondering if toyota can do anything to stand behind their product here? the engine feels strong (it's a toyota!) and the 4runner power and all-wheel drive has been great here in rural vermont.thank you for your consideration.best, [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*pm
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while replacing the brake pads he noticed that both front calipers were not working properly. The contact decided to replace the calipers. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 50,000.
Toyota dealer failed safety inspection due to rear suspension arm rusted off and a hole rusted through frame. Only has 124,000 miles. Toyota said that vehicle is unsafe to drive and rear end may lift during a hard stop. Rear brake lines are also rusted out.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 55 mph, the abs, auto lsd, and vsc trac warning indicators illuminated continuously. The brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to decelerate. The contact stated that the emergency brakes engaged and the vehicle stopped abruptly. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power booster assembly failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Updated 04/13/16*lj
The master brake cylinder completely failed thus rendering the brakes completely inoperable.to stop the vehicle, the car was placed in p and shut down. It was towed to the dealer for inspection.this car had been serviced per the manufactures schedule since it was purchased in 2005.for almost two years, we had heard an oscillating sound from the engine compartment.the local dealer was made aware of this, but unable to diagnose the problem.the last visit was 4 months ago at which time they did not find a problem, but the sound continued.highly dangerous situation.luckily there was not an accident.
I own a 2005 toyota 4runner.the frame is rusting so severely that it may not pass inspection next year at this time.i live in pa.i have heard that toyota has acknowledged that they have had frame issues with the tacoma (same chasis), the early tundras (i own a recalled 2000 with same issue), sequoias (same chasis as tundra......please tell me that the will recall my 4runner.i love the vehicle but the rust on the frame will kill it.
Received a letter regarding tacoma and tundra was issued a recall. I wonder why 4runner was not included with the recall? upon visual inspection of body frame and comparing to other 4runner, it does have excessive rust on body frame.we tried to bring it up with the dealer, but no avail. Trade in was the only alternative.our trust and respectto the agency and hopefully, its not too late before they issue a recall.more power to the agency and god bless america.
My toyota 2005 4runner undercarriage and frame is really badly rusted.the brake lines have rusted out and failed on 2 separate occasions in heavy traffic once (8/2017) on a 4 lane i had to cross to safety, and last on a steep hill with heavy traffic at the bottom of hill, thank god i didn't hit anyone. Now i find out that the frame has acrack in it and rusted out on the passenger side and is split/rusted up front, it is very dangerous. I can not afford to pay out of pocket for repairs..
Noticed after just purchacing a used 4runner fro a toyota dealer ship that my brakes seem to be making a lot of noise.went to my mechanic and he told me that the front calipers on both sides of the car were frozen due to rust and that he has noticed this issue with multible sequoias and 4runners.had to have the whole brake system repairs costing me over 1000 dollars.
I was leaving my house and my brakes completely failed!foot to the floor and nothing happened.there was no warning or back up to help me stop.luckily i was in my neighborhood and only ran into a neighbors yard (and did not hit any children).i had the car towed to a mechanic who told me the master cylinder was broken and needed to be replaced.after contacting toyota, the parts dept acknowledged that this was a common issue, and then asked if i wanted the part (for a small fortune).basically he said either you fix it, or don't drive the car anymore.in addition he compared the brake failure to a tv breaking!a tv?!a complete break failure puts not only the driver, but the general public in serious jeopardy.what has to happen for toyota corporate to acknowledge this issue and issue a recall?
Frequently when i drive on a bumpy surface or sloped bumpy surface and press the brake pedal, it seems to fail momentarily. I feel that the brake is unresponsive and need to release and push the pedal again. It create an unsafe situation and need to drive the car to the side to of the road as safety.
Vehicle brakes failed completely.no warning prior to event.the brakes failed while driving. We had to coast into a parking lot and then apply the emergency brake. Multiple dashboard warning lights came on but none prior to the brake failure.there were no symptoms whatsoever of the impending failure. The dealer says the master cylinder failed.there were no serious injuries, however, if this had occurred just moments before we would have been on the interstate driving 60+ mph!
Front brake caliper "frozen", both.brought vehicle to several independent brake shops and all said that it is a "common problem".toyota dealer would not repair at no charge and in fact wanted about twice what the independent shop charge.
The problem is the sudden reduction of braking power. It happened twice during the course of the owner ship of my suv. Last incident happened on 01/31/2009. Early in the morning i was backing up from my garage by using the reverse gear and then i switched the gear to d to move forward. My driveway slopes down away from my garage. While moving forward away from the garage i tried to brake, but the pedal went all the way down to the floor and the suv was still moving. I had to pump the brake few times stop. The break system acted like that for next 2-3 hours and then it went back to 'normal'. The fist time that it happened about 2 years ago, toyota looked at it but apparently couldn't find any thing. I don't know when and where it will happen again. Hopefully not on the freeway going 55 mph. Honestly i don't trust the braking system of this suv any more.
Front brake calipers had to be replaced because they were frozen.
When i tried replacing my brake pad, i noticed that the front caliper piston is frozen and i could not retract it.i ended up replacing my front caliper on both sides due to this.both front driver side and front passenger side caliper is frozen.1 piston on each caliper.i believe this is a safety issue and should be addressed quickly to avoid future accident.i have my receipts when i replaced it if you need it.thank you.
My 2005 toyota 4runner has had issues with front brake calipers seizing up.with roughly 60k miles on it, i had to replace both front calipers because the lower inner pistons were seized.i replaced the calipers with re-manufactured calipers.at 100k miles, i had to replace the front calipers again for the same reason.after searching on the toyota 4runner forums, it appears that this is a common problem.the local toyota dealership was unable to offer anything other than replacing the calipers at my cost.i called the toyota customer service line and reported the problem twice, but they were also unable to do anything.they blame road salt for the issue.my other vehicles, as well as those of my neighbors/friends/coworkers, have operated in the same conditions, but haven't had this issue.thus far, i haven't had a complete braking failure or incident from the issue.i've noticed the issue when the rotors warp from the constant heat and replaced the calipers.i'm concerned over the issue and toyota's unwillingness to address the safety concern.
Front brakes pistons seized to rotors and will not release.vehicle would barely slow down.called toyota hotline and they said there's nothing they will do to help fix the problem.called dealer and they are well aware of the problem.they said they have replaced many front calipers and this is a common problem for 2004 and 2005 4runners.i almost lost control and crashed car when the brake went out and toyota can't even help fix there faulty products.vehicle has 85k miles.i counted over a dozen similar complaint on nhtsa website regarding 04 and 05 brake calipers seizing.calipers should be recalled, this is just as dangerous as the sticking gas pedals they put in the new cars.
This is regarding the braking system on a 2005 toyota 4runner.every time i hit a pot hole as im pressing on the brake the vehicle stops braking.even though my foot is still on the brake pedal the vehicle continues moving as if no braking was applied.this only happens if i hit a pot hole or bump while im pressing the brake pedal.im reporting this now because i see that similar situation is occurring with the prius vehicles.i did report this issue to my local toyota dealership over a year ago and was told that there was no issue with my suv.
Heavy vibration noticed when attempting to brake at speeds above 40mph.a reduction in braking feel and power was also noticed.when i went to examine the brakes, i found that both of the front brake calipers had frozen lower pistons.had to replace both front calipers and rotors as well as brake pads.found this to be a very common problem on 4th generation toyota 4runners.many complains can be found at www.t4r.com.
My abs does not engage when brakes are applied in an emergency. Over time, braking distances have become significantly longer.recently, i attempted to replace my front brakes and both sides' lower brake pistons were frozen/seized.this same issue has occurred with many other 2003-2009 toyota 4runner owners.more information about this defect can be found on http://www.t4r.org.
While applying brakes, a small bump was hit and the brake pedal went to the floor.the vehicle eventually stopped, but without the assistance of power breaks.this has happened on several occasions, so far without a collision.the vehicle has been taken to the dealership several times and they have been unable to find the problem.
While driving down the freeway traffic started to slow. I applied pressure to the brakes but nothing happened. There was a loud clicking noise in the braking system and the car seemed to lurch forward. The car is now totaled. The same problem occurred a month before and my wife has experienced the problem as well.
-the contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance. The technician detected the left and right front pistons were frozen due to excessive corrosion. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The front brake calipers required a replacement. The estimated cost for repair was $835.00. The contact was displeased to know the manufacturer refused to be financially responsible for the total cost of the repair. The manufacturer offered to cover fifty percent towards the service repair cost. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 50,000. The current mileage was 56,000.
The frame underneath the front bumper is totally rusted and crumbling.my mechanic showed me yesterday and said the radiator would fall out.also the control arrms to the front two wheels are very badly rusted.
Frame rusted leading to failure of sway bar brackets causing steering to become unstable. This occurred while driving straight down a highway. The repair estimate is total frame replacement.
2005 toyota 4runners have a very frequently reported vibration issue.this issue is reported all over the web and acknowledged by dealers nationwide.from my understanding, 2004 to 2007 4runners are all impacted.customer spend 1000s of dollars replacing tires, balancing wheels, replacing steering wheels, etc and the car still vibrates and is suspect to be unsafe.this is a well known issue and toyota claims that this is the design of the call.steering wheel can shake badly.i have had my 4runner in many times for this issue to multiple dealers.all say it is a problem, but all 4runners of same vintage have same issue, so nothing that toyota will do about it.
Last september, i sent a written plea asking toyota to evaluate and correct the excessive frame corrosion on my 2005 4runner.the vehicle has never been registered outside south carolina or ever been exposed to road salt. Toyota's response disclaiming responsibility was unsatisfactory.toyota is well aware of this problem and has corrected this identical problem on similar models and model years.yesterday, my wife and i and two friends riding with us narrowly escaped a fatal accident when the front suspension separated from the frame due to the corrosion problem.at highway speed, the vehicle began shaking violently and the steering was unable to properly control the vehicle.the vehicle went off the road after coming close to hitting an oncoming vehicle.it was towed to an experienced independent mechanic who expressed disbelief at the corroded condition of the frame and immediately declared the vehicle unrepairable and inoperable.he said we were fortunate to have survived the structural failure.in light of the fact that toyota is aware of severe corrosion on similar vehicles and has corrected the issue on some models, please investigate this and determine if the excess corrosion is inherent to 4runners and if an immediate recall is warranted. The internet has many references to excess frame corrosion on 4runners.it is unconcionable that toyota would put thousands of their customer's lives at risk to avoid the cost of repairing frames that were subject to an inadequate corrosion protection process.again, my vehicle has only 76,000 miles, has no corrosion whatsoever on the body, and has never been operated where salt is applied to the roads. Attached is one of the many photos of the failure location.
The steering system of the car is not behaving properly. It is much harder to turn than normal. Furthermore, when driven through curve, the steering does not align back to a straight line as it has done in the past. So, in other words if you drive through a curve and let the steering wheel go free, the car will not straighten out but continue to follow the curve. The steering has to be pulled hard to straighten the vehicle out and drive a straight line.no warning lights are coming up in the instrument cluster to advise of any malfunction.
Excessive underbody rust, rusting frame joints, and rotting frame members from the inside out.
The frame of the vehicle is rusted, the rust integrity may result in a steering failure.
Severe frame rust to the point of holes. The frame integrity will soon be compromised; if not already. Two rear body mounts are rusting away, the bottom of both mounts is non existent. One mid mount, the sheet metal side is nearly rusted through. One front mount area is rusted away on the sheet metal side. The gas tank is currently only held in place by what is left of the protection shield under the tank .
Vehicle is unsafe to drive due to frame corrosion, also steering going out
When turning to park get message driving assist disabled drive with care and the dash loser power canā€™t turn steering. Power steering shuts off this has happens multiple times had battery check out alternator every show good. Have research online other people having same issue.
Severe frame and front end rust, vehicle well taken care of> should have been part of tacoma recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This vehicle has a very rusty frame. It does not pass state of maine inspection.like many other 4runners it suffers from toyota's faulty frames.this truck has not fallen apart and crashed like many similar units.this one has a perforated frame, and doesn't pass inspection.with 80,000 miles the truck is like new except for the faulty frame.the rust multiplies sitting still or traveling.the frame is so thin in so many places, there isn't place to make satisfactory repairs.
Unable to turn wheel without great effort, wheel does not return to straight after turn without driver pulling wheel back to original position.
Upon recent inspection of my vehicle, it was noted that the frame is severely corroded and rusted to the point where collapse or breaking of the frame is possible while driving. Apprently the frame was not properly treated for rust protection and can now be unsafe for driving. Enclosed are pictures of the rusted frame.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4 runner.while driving approximately 55 mph, the driver noticed that the steering wheel always turned to the left.he then heard a clunking noise near the front end of the vehicle when the transmission was placed into drive.the vehicle was taken to a repair shop and the mechanic discovered that the rear passenger side stabilizer bar snapped and the metal appeared to be crystallized.the mechanic replaced the stabilizerbar and the rack and pinion.the manufacturer stated that they would not provide reimbursement since the vehicle was out of warranty and was not serviced at a dealer.the contact believes a recall should be issued.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 53,000.
Vibration issues.sterring whell vibrates even after with a set of 4 knew tires.at speed of about 5o milles / hour vibration starts.
Brought vehicle to repair shop for muffler and tailpipe inspection. Repair shop foundframe cracked and rusted along with steering shaft broken.repair shop indicated that there is no recall on 4runners yet this is a known problem with the 2005 4runner. Repair shop stated it would cost $6000.00 for new frame from toyota dealer. Hartford toyota superstore has done oil changes on this vehicle since purchase yet has never brought the frame problem to our attention.
Vehicle is vibrating when braking, unstable at speed of 50mph ,toyota dealer diagnosed the problem as bad left & right ball joint/lower control arm ,and needs to be replaced at a cost of $2300 vehicle only have 55000 miles no accidents..i searched online and found out that almost every 4runner owners are having this problem.
Extensive body frame rust.large rusted out holes in frame. Unable to get ma. Vehicle yearly inspection sticker. Emissions test failed (ma. Inspection station #pb004755). Vehicle bought new 6/2005recommended not to drive vehicle due to extensive holes in frame.
My suv only has 66,000 miles on it and recently (past month) the steering is very laborious. To the point that i have neck and shoulder pain. The steering is hard to start a turn (no matter what speed) and as i continue to turn the wheel it will ease up a bit and then be hard to turn it back again to straight. Meaning that it will not return without considerable effort. I was on cars.com website as they had recalls listed. I looked up 4 runner steering problems and they gave me a recall number. When i called toyota they told me there were no recalls for my vin #. I think toyota is ripping me off because the problem i'm having is just what is described in the summary. The component listed is steering; linkages; rod; relay; connecting. The consequence listed is if the vehicle is continued to be operated in this condition, the relay rod may fracture, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall number is 05v389000 and the recall date is 09-06-2005. Plus my wife and i do not turn the wheel until the vehicle is moving. We are old enough to know what is was like before cars had power steering. This is a safety issue! thanks for any help that you can do for us.
My 4 runner has extreme frame corrosion due to poor quality.the vehicle is now suffering numerous safety issues as a result. The frame is not repairable and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. It has less than 100,000 miles.the vehicle will not pass state inspection.
Upon recently driving a family member's 2005 toyota 4runner limited v8, i heard a knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle over bumps. Upon inspecting the vehicle, i discovered extensive rust on nearly every single part of the structural frame, suspension components and even exhaust system. Some parts are so badly rusted that they can be punctured by simply pushing your finger through them (including the rear frame cross member crash structure behind the rear bumper). These vehicles are rusting so terribly that i'm shocked nhtsa hasn't forced toyota to recall them. Yes, they're older, but the level of rust and decay is unprecedented for nearly any modern car. Toyota already had to recall all of their other body-on-frame vehicles (tacoma, tundra, sequoia, and land cruiser) to replace the frames due to rust. Why have they neglected the 4runner when it's arguably the vehicle that will likely see use off road more than all the others? the nhtsa should force toyota to recall these cars before someone is killed. Look at any online forum as i did last night and you'll see toyota is actually being sued in a class action lawsuit for this very issue. Tons of people are sharing photos and stories of their own incidents. Someone is going to be killed when their car disintegrates as they drive down the road and they lose control of their steering, braking or if they're hit in a collision and the structural members of the car crumble like a cracker.
Steering column rusted through. Hard to turn, when turning wheel it goes from smooth(normal) then grabby. I almost flipped my vehicle when turning off of mass avenue in somerville. If i was driving any fast i would have rolled. I don't know if any wheels came off the ground, but it was close.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4 runner. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle became difficult to steer. The steering was very tight traveling around curves. The steering failed without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column u joint was severely corroded. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 169,066.
About two weeks ago, i discovered two cracks on my dash, one by the driver side close to the wind shield and one by the passenger ( in between the compartment and radio)i decided to search the cause and to my surprise this is apparently common on many toyota 4runners, sienna's, highlanders and others. I also was disappointed to read that toyota won't take any responsibility and are quick to respond that car is out of warranty or caused by ones neglect. This can be a hazard. This is why i chose to report it. A lot of what i have read is that it will only get worse and my concern is that if these cracks get close to the airbags it will allow the already weakened dash to deploy the airbag and cause injury or even worse an accident. I believe this issue warrants some kind of attention or investigation. Toyota owes some kind of acknowledgement to consumers and put safety first. They make us feel as we are the perpetuators and they are the victims. Proof is in the changes they have made to the dashboard quality on the newer models. Many consumers do not have the $1000 to replace a dash and choose to either ignore or find a third party to fix which can make it worse.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frame of the vehicle was severely rusted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 189,000. Updated 01/04/17*lj
Hair line crack over instrument panel on 2005 4-runner sport addition. Just appeared nothing occured to make it happen.
On july 31, 2015 while traveling east on i-78 near easton pennsylvania at approximately 70 mph the steering wheel in my vehicle abruptly began to shake violently.i was fearful of loosing control of my vehicle.a subsequent inspection by tri-county toyota in royersford, pato determine the cause of this malfunction revealed extensive rust damage to the frame of the vehicle.the dealer did not offer any remedy to correct the condition to make it safe for me to drive.via email i contacted the executive offices of toyota motor sales, usa.their representative did respond to me but did not offer me any resolution to correct this hazard.she did offer me a $1,500 "loyalty" offer towards the purchase of a new toyota.that response is not acceptable to me.this is clearly a design flaw with this vehicle that make them dangerous on the roads.there are other 4runner owners who have similar experiences with their vehicles.additionally, other toyota vehicles have been recalled for the same condition.my vehicle is in very good condition mechanically because i have diligently adhered to toyota's maintenance schedule. I regularly wash it so that neither the body nor the interior show any undue signs of wear.i am merely seeking reasonable remedy to this issue that was not caused by any fault of mine.
My 2005 4runner is in great shape besides the dashboard. My dashboard is cracked all over. The vehicle is garage kept and has tinted windows. After doing a google search, it appears that there are a tremendous amount of people with the same issue. This should be recalled and replaced. When the vehicle was at the dealership for service, i asked the price for replacement and it was several thousand dollars. This will surely decrease the value of my vehicle and could be dangerous if the airbags went off and the cracked dash cuts someone.
There's excessive rusting of the chassis, axle, differential and other components under the vehicle. I'm the original owner and observed rust formation within the first year of ownership. The suv has only 84k miles and is garaged most of the time. I have been using rust inhibitors to slow the process.
2005 toyota 4 runner sr 5 spare tire bracket/ holder severely prematurely rusted. Dealer unable to remove spare tire. Lubricant applied by dealer to no avail. Bracket/holder defect makes spare tire unavailable for use and can lead to bracket/holder failure.dealer unable to remedy leaving vehicle owner with no spare and potential for catastrophicevent while vehicle in use.
Dashboard cracked mostly in the area above de passanger air bag.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4 runner. The contact stated that the dashboard became cracked from the driver's side to the passenger's side area. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 78,000.
Brought the car in for service and was informed that there is a large hole in the frame and that it's prematurely rusting from the inside out and it's a safety issuenow i'm scared to have my family in the vehicle
I was driving the vehicle, hit a pot hole.little bit after that, when i came to a stop and started to accelerate, the vehicle started to swirve all over the road and become uncontrollable.i was able to pull over and stop the vehicle.after inspecting the vehicle, the rear component broke off from the frame due to rust.the dealer stated that the suv will need frame replaced due to rust.the vehicle 180k miles tune up was performed at the dealer in winter 2015 and no rust was mentioned upon "complete" inspection.the vehicle is now non operation and is a total lost due to rust.every 30k miles the vehicle was taken to the dealer for maintenance.oil changes were performed every 5k miles with synthetic oil.the car has been garaged for since purchasing it new in 2005.it has never been on the beach.salt is not used on our road.
Frame is so badly rusted it is undriveable. You can push a screwdriver through the frame in most places. Toyota recalled the frames of their other vehicles in the same year, but left out the 4runner. These 4runners are dangerous.
The cable on the spare tire lift mechanism freyed and became stuck.the spare tire would not come down all the way.when i did get it down, i inspected the cable and it was badly damaged by the retraction mechanism.cable could have easily failed and dropped the spare tire onto the road while driving.toyota has recalled a similar mechanism on the sienna model, however, they told me it was not on recall for the toyota 4runner.failure of that cable on the expressway could cause a serious accident.toyota wants $250 to replace the mechanism which is a poor design and will fail again.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4 runner. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle veered left to right. The contact discovered that the stabilitizer bar failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame was rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,000.updated 02/18/16*lj
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While the vehicle was undergoing maintenance at an independent mechanic, the contact was informed that the rear subframe was extremely corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
The frame is rusting to the point where there are holes in many places also the tow hook rusted off, i am concerned the steering will be affected soon.
Rusted frame of vehicle including cross bar under radiator and on struts attached to wheels. Found during routine maintenance by auto mechanic.
Suv under carriage is extremely rusted
My 2005 4runner has considerable amount of rust on the frame that has been noticed both by myself and my mechanic my car sits on the same frame as a tacoma which has been recalled for defective frames however the 4runner has not been recalled and has numerous frame problems and complaints on file
Take to shop for leak tramission line the shop owner said my 4runner has cancer and it growing excessive rotting please help i can't stop the cancer
My 4 runner has extreme frame corrosion due to poor quality.the vehicle is now suffering numerous safety issues as a result. The frame is not repairable and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. It has less than 100,000 miles.the vehicle will not pass state inspection.
Purchsed the vehicle used and the underside/frame is completely rusted.
Driving in upstate new york for my honeymoon, the belt broke and cut into a hose.i had to have the vehicle towed to a toyota dealership where they explained to me that my frame was deteriorating with lots of rust.this 2005 toyota 4runner only had approximately 85,000 miles on it.the technician also told me, although there is not a recall on this model, in his opinion, there should be.not only is this a serious safety hazard, toyota is not rectifying the problem.also, it is not just one area on the frame, but a significant amount of the frame.i can also provide photos if needed.
Frame has rusted similar to tacoma and seqouiya recalls and do not see why they have not been recalled.
There is significant frame rust and i am concerned it will result in frame failure and a serious accident.the rest of the vehicle is in great shape as it has been well maintained and garage kept.it only has 135,000 miles on it.i have viewed the significant concerns about this issue on the web along with the nhtsa investigation into this issue.unfortunately at this time toyota is still refusing to fix the issue.what liability does toyota have if the frame fails and it results in a serious injury?i first noticed the issue in 2017 but do not know how long it has been a problem since you have to be under the car or see it on a lift to understand the significance of the issue.
Under body rusttook to costco to replace tires - they say significant rust on left side.tool to jiffy lube for oil change one week later - they say significant rust and cannot remove rear differential to replace fluid due to rusted bolt.
My frame is starting to rust very terribly no matter what i do to maintain it. The radiator support is completely rotted out and the rear part of the frame is getting worse by the month. This will cause a major injury in the case of an accident or the frame will break off while driving
Excesive rust under body. Exhaust system and frame.
Ii was informed by the tech at checkered flag toyota in virginia beach , virginia that the frame on my 2005 toyota 4runner sport has a frame that is failing and may present a driving hazard if i continue to drive it . Their # is(757) 716-5502.
There's excessive rusting of the chassis, axle, differential and other components under the vehicle. I'm the original owner and observed rust formation within the first year of ownership. The suv has only 84k miles and is garaged most of the time. I have been using rust inhibitors to slow the process.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the dashboard was peeling and coming apart. The contact was notified by the manufacturer of the potential defect according to a manufacturer's satisfaction campaign, but the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Frame corrosion is causing a hole in the frame similar to that of the tacoma and tundras.
The frame is completely rusted through in several spots to include several brackets on the underside of the vehicle.
Hi, i own a 2005 4runner and i am concerned about the heavy amount of rusting on the frame. The frame is rusty which is causing heavy flaking of the affected material. The body of the vehicle is pristine but i fear that the premature rusting of the frame will affect the ability to safely drive my 4runner in the future. I am a special education teacher with two young daughters and don't have the income to go out and replace the frame or buy a new vehicle. This 4runner is the only vehicle i own and is my daily driver. My students and their guardians depend on me to arrive safely to school everyday so there is consistency in my students' lives. I have seen many 4runners in this age range suffer from this same corrosion. I am concerned that my family will be injured in a minor accident or the vehicle's safety mechanisms failing because of frame damage. I am also concerned that i will lose my only means of transporting myself to work. I am a huge fan of toyota, especially 4runners, and want to keep mine around for a long time. Keeping toyota vehicles around for a long time is what the company was built upon.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. When the contact took the vehicle to ourisman chantilly toyota (4135 auto park cir, chantilly, va 20151, 703-832-4827) to be serviced, the mechanic stated that the frame had extensive rust damage. Due to the extensive rust, a hole formed in the frame. The contact was informed that the vehicle was dangerous to operate. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 160,000.
I had my 2005 toyota 4runner limited serviced today. The mechanic will not work on the vehicle due to excessive rust and holes in the frame. The vehicle looks immaculate on the inside and out, but due to the corrosion underneath i am being advised to junk the vehicle as it is unsafe to drive.
I have rust through areas on the frame of my 2005 4runner near the catalytic converter.the frame is flaking and pealing at this level.the integrity of the frame is compromisedtoyota recalled tacoma and sequoia for similar issues but not 4runneri like this truck but i doesn't seem safe driving it
Frame rust.the frame has significant amount rust in specific areas of the frame.-the radiator support needs to be completely repaired.as this is part of the frame, i am considered about future failure while driving.at the rear end of the vehicle there is also a large amount of rust, causing holes.
Frame rust:the amount of rust is substantial.i have older toyota vehicles with the frames is much better condition.i am meticulous when it comes to maintaining and detailing my vehicles.i thoroughly hose down the underside of my 4runner after long drives to drive to preserve the frame, though i feel as if it is too late.i also have a 2010 tacoma that the frame was serviced at no cost to me.i am a loyal toyota customer and would love to maintain my 4runner and keep it on road for many more years.
I heard a banging from the rear end so i brought the vehicle to my mechanic.my mechanic told me that the frame is totally corroded and is now a safety issue. I have had to take it off the road and now i am waiting to see if the recall will include my vehicle like it did with the tacoma, tundra, and sequoia same which the year of my vehicle is included.
Frame rot that should have been included in the tacoma, tundra, sequoia!
My wife reported a thin crack in the dash assembly on our 4runner. The car is keptin a garage and she uses a sun visor when parked at work. Although it is a 2005 limited 4 wheel drive model, it only has 39,000 miles on it. There are cracks on the drivers side dash corner and three in different areas of the dashboard. No accidents and no children banging on the dash. Noticed online this is a common complaint. Nice if toyota assisted in a very expensive repair.
I bought the truck a little less than a year ago, in november of 2017, from a friend. I am the third owner of the truck and know that the vehicle has always been well maintained and serviced.weeks after purchasing the truck, exiting the highway, the brake system failed. Pedal to the floor, no pressure. I was able to coast the car to a nearby parking lot and had it towed to my mechanic. Upon inspection, my mechanic noted that the frame was severely rusted. The brake lines had failed as a result of the corrosion and rust on the undercarriage. I replaced the entire brake system at a cost of $3500.00.a month later, the truck failed inspection due to a hole in the subframe caused by the rust. It was then that i began research and learned of the toyota recall for every other truck except the 4runner in similar years/generation. I took the truck to burdick toyota in cicero, new york this september to have the frame inspected. The tech report (which i can furnish on request) stated that the frame was extremely rusted, scaled and deteriorated for the age of the vehicle, but that it posed no imminent threat. I disagree with this assessment, as it has already caused one catastrophic failure.i've learned of a potential investigation and must say, i believe it to be the responsibility of the nhtsa to recall the affected 4runners of the same generation. Had the scenario been different, i or my family could have been injured or killed. I'm a teacher, and haven't the means to simply replace a vehicle i've already had to put thousands of dollars into. I bought it for the safety of my brand new baby girl. I feel it morally imperative that the nhtsa do the right thing and recall the 4runners as they have the other vehicles. Human life should always be more important than a companies bottom line. Toyota is responsible and should be held accountable. Lives are at stake.
I just wanted to add my 2005 toyota 4runner to the complaint list with highly compromised structural integrity due to extreme rust. The vehicle has 118,000 miles with only one owner and the vehicle was garaged the entire time. There are cracks and holes in my rear frame that has led our mechanic to deem the vehicle unsafe. He has suggested we replace this vehicle as soon as we can. Prior to coming on this complaint site, i was under the impression the we had the unfortunate luck of purchasing a lemon; instead it appears this is a known issue that is being ignored and swept under the rug. I am appalled at the inaction of toyota and the nhtsa regarding this structural issue.
The vehicle was in for suspension service.the mechanic inspecting the shock system, identified two areas of rust on the frame that a screwdriver easily went through.one on the crossover bar and the other on the rear frame arch.
Corroded and rusty frames on most of these year toyota 4runners, including mine.
Significant frame rust that has created from rot with rotted out holes.vehicle is now failing safety inspections.this is identical to the tacoma/tundra/sequoia recall but the 4runners were not included in that recall.the 4runners should be included in that recall or a new recall established since this same frame rust issue is significantly compromising the 2005 4runner (4th generation 4runner) vehicle safety putting owners and other drivers at risk.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving 45 mph, the rear of the vehicle was moving. The contact stated that the sway bar fractured and detached from the frame. In addition, the traction control and tpms warning indicators were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 125,000.
The undercarriage of my toyota 4runner is rusted and falling apart.the calibers have frozen for the second time in the last year due to rust and the front axle has broken.the 2005 4runner has 69,000 miles on it and when i took it to the dealer the mechanic showed me that rust has taken over the frame of my car and explained that due to the excessive rust it would not be a good idea to fix.this car should be able to go more than 69,000 miles and rust is the reason.
The local toyota dealership informed me that my vehicle has a hole in the vehicleframe of the same nature as the same year toyota tacoma trucks which have been the subject of a recall.
Takata recall, went to fix a tire when the tire was removed there was a chunk of metal that was rusted and broken off. The rust is bad all over the frame of the truck. The bolt doesnt look like it is going to hold on much longer.
Excess frame rust. Mechanic states frame has severe rust all over the entire frame and is in eminent danger of completely rusting through. Major frame repair or replacement is needed.
Frame is rotting
The frame has rusted and cracked at the front of the vehicle the crack extending to the wheel.none of this would have been visible to a mechanic accept that the skid plate had been removed when a new transmission was installed.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated numerous cracks were found along the dash board. The contact mentioned that the passenger side air bag was expose which could cause it to deploy without any impacts. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The failure mileage was 90,221.
There was no "frame rotting" selection so i just chose what i think is affected. Major scaling on the inside. Outside looks perfect. Well, it seems that the inside rotted so bad that my inner frame rail on the passenger side near the rear track arm had almost rotted through. It is soft like a sponge, but yet the factory toyota frame paint held it together. Poking it with my finger and it all crumbled revealing quite a few holes. Hood also has a lot of little rusted parts. This didn't happen because of negligence of my part. I take good care of my cars and never had troubles like these with any other car brands.
Excessive rust and corrosion on frame.frame has sever rust and holes. Front lower frame support have rusted out and no longer structurally stable. Excessive corrosion alone entire frame rail front to back. Gas tank retaining belts/straps rusted out complacently, no longer securing gas tank to vehicle.
The frame on my 4runner is severely rusted and pieces of it is falling off. The frame right behind the front wheels has several holes which are about 3" by 5" on the bottom and smaller on the sides. There are tow hooks on the front part of the frame and one has rusted off and the other one is about ready to fall off. Nothing was ever hooked to them. The radiator core support is rusting away and will not last much longer. I feel that the frame is dangerously close to collapsing and putting my family at risk of severe injury or death.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frame was corroded. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to toyota of brookfield (20655 w capitol dr, brookfield, wi 53045, (262) 236-7992) where it was determined that the vehicle could not be driven. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was 94,000.*dt*dt *dtconsumer stated vehicle has been sitting by his house since it was determined it could not be driven.*ln
My 2005 is severely rusted to the point that it is probably unsafe to drive. It has only 106k miles. I've taken it to two frame repair/swap shops. Both confirmed that the rust has eaten holes through the frame and that the structural integrity of the vehicle is likely very compromised. They'd said the extent of the rust was the worst they'd ever seen, and that a collision could crumple the weakened frame, putting the passengers and greater risk of injury/death. I even had one of those shops start a frame swap, but they said that every bolt and part would snap and break when they tried to remove it and told me that the labor could exceed the value of the vehicle, if they were even able to finish the job. Even without collision i'm worried an axle or tie rod or something will break at high speed and cause a terrible accident. I've submitted a claim to toyota customer service to ask if there was anything they would do (fix, or buy back the vehicle). They said they could not do anything because there is no recall for toyota 4runner frames, but there is an active recall for frame rust on the tacoma, which i believe is the same frame. After looking around online at 4runner forums, i've seen the rust complaint again and again, and in the wake of the kobe metals scandal, i thought it was important to raise my concern with the nhtsa. I'm attaching pictures of the rust and a carfax report showing there has never been an accident on the vehicle.
I have noticed a lot of rust underneath my vehicle. The frame is showing signs of rust.i have had bolts rust into causing heatshields to come loose for example. Recently had new struts and shocks installed. My mechanic pointed out the rust to me.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving various speeds, the contact heard an abnormal noise. The vehicle was taken to dowling toyota of litchfield (451 bantam rd, litchfield, ct 06759, (860) 567-0815) where the contact was informed that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 122,000.*cw *dl
Please add the below to:frame corrosionnhtsa action number: dp18002components structuretonight i was surprised to have my toyota dealer tell me that my 2005 4runner frame was rusted out. He recommended that i not have them do the routine maintenance i had scheduled and he zeroed out the invoice. He questioned whether it was safe to drive, and said it would no longer pass the next inspection. The rest of the vehicle is in great shape. Despite doing oil undercoating ever since toyota warranty expired, the frame was no match to the salty winter roads of nh.
Really bad rame rust with holes through frame and frame components. I have pictures showing itā€™s the entire frame, not just the few spots. I had a shop replace the gas tank straps and when i picked it up they told me/warned me the frame had really bad rust. Have read about others having same or worse problems with chassis rust with this generation of 4runners.
I purchased my 2005 toyota 4 runner from the original owner in august. 2018 with 74,000 miles on it. Garage kept and older couple owned it. Inside and outside are near mint condition. Now has 91,000 miles. The front cross member is completely rotted and barely being held together. I can wiggle the whole piece with my hand. The right side center of the frame has a 7 inch hole on he bottom and a 2 inch hole on the side in the same area. The right rear control arm bracket has rotted apart thus throwing the thrust angle off and the steering wheel is crooked when driving. The frame surrounding that area of the right rear bracket is completely rotted and splitting in 2. All got noticed when i hit a pot hole in the road and heard a clunk and the steering wheel went crooked. Vehicle would not drive straight anymore. Good thing i was not going fast and i immediately pulled to the shoulder of the road to investigate.
Rust on frame is excessive. Just over 100,000. Getting unsafe.
I have toyota 4runner 2005 and when i went to the dealer to change my oil i was told that the car has frame damage and it is dangerous to drive. The car is in excellent condition, but this problem was unexpected. I never been told by my dealer or toyota company that this is a common issue for this make and that there was a recall few years ago for this problem. I am not able to afford new car and this is putting a hardship onmy family and our safety. I call toyota but i was told that they are not able to help me in any way. Who can assist in this situation?
Frame on 4runner rusted in numerous locations and the a arm rusted off while my wife and 2 year old daughter were driving in it. Luckily they were uninjured.
2005 toyota 4runner structural frame rapid oxidation to structure causing left front control arm to frame (as well as frame itself) to break while in motion at slow speed leaving driveway. I have contacted toyota case# 1712112893 to ask why there is no buyback program on frames that they produced in 2004 that were found defective in tacoma's/4runners that were also used for their 2005 model production 4runners. Toyota rep told myself that no campaigns would exist unless otherwise told so (or perhaps investigated for their prior acknowledged defective frames used in previous model years). Though i am lucky that this occurred at slow speed i don't know how many other americans may face my situation while at 60-70mph on the highway with their families whom trust toyota for their safety and product reliability that end in ultimate tragedy.i've included photos as well as a clean carfax report to show no prior incidents. Thank you.
2005 4runner sport 4.7. I've got 82k miles on it. Clean title and record, no flood damage, accidents, ect... The driver's side lower strut mount broke off while driving. The toyota technician at the dealership said it was due to excessive corrosion and the quality of the metal in the area on the frame was so bad it would be unrepairable and a total loss without a new frame. I was going 20 miles per hour driving straight and i lost control and it pulled me to the right, off the road. Had this happened at highway speeds it would've been a catastrophic failure and caused a serious accident. The wheel was up against the top of the wheel well and the cv drive shaft was torn out. Toyota costumer service said that it wasn't under warranty or recall an offered no course of solution or action. I'd assume a company that boasts upon their vehicle longevity would expect a car to be drivable for more than 82,000 miles before the main structural component of the vehicle fails. This vehicle hasn't been driven excessively in the salt during the winter either and no aftermarket undercoating was applied to the vehicle. I now own a totaled vehicle with no one owning up to a clear factory defect. * toyota replaced a frame in my friend's 2006 4runner sport, with 162k in 2014. I didn't find a warranty or recall on that model either.
2005 4runner in really good shape except for frame rust. This car would easily have gone another 100k with a strong drivetrain and interior in great shape.was brought in to dealer for maintenance and when the tech put it on the lift he saw the rust damage. Called and explained the issue and suggested this was not safe for the road. This could have been a catastrophic accident if by chance it was not at the dealer. Rust is serious enough to have frame break and loss of control of vehicle.so i go from a reliable great vehicle to a piece of junk that can't be driven. This issue should definitely be covered and repair by toyota, as toyota is famous for rust issues!!!there's no question the frame was not coated properly. Rust this severe for a 2005 year car is not acceptable. Toyota should stand behind their product and fix this car.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frame was rusted and pieces were falling off of the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact called route 22 toyota (located at 109 us-22, hillside, nj 07205, (855) 691-0898) and informed them of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 200,000.
Excessive frame rusting and rotting. Toyota has done decal on other vehicles such as the tacoma and others but frequently neglects the 4runner models. For example the recall for the secondary air pump for the v8's included the tundra and sequoia but neglected the 4runner which all three vehicles share the same identical motor. I believe toyota neglect the 4runner line due to the high volume of sales compared to other models.
Major frame rust could lead to safety issue. Please look into this issue.
The frame has excessive corrosion. I had some suspension replaced last year and it was fine today my dealer told me there is excessive corrosion and recommends not to put any money into it. Also told me this happened quickly because if it was there last year he would have informed me then not to do the suspension work.
Excessive rust/corrosion on frame.have seen stories where frame separates from the truck body.upon getting my oil change at my reputable ase shop, owner pointed out to me that vehicle is rusting quickly, hole in frame, and will need to be replaced sooner than later ... When i had it undercoated, washed it following every snowstorm and roads salted, and had planned since point of sale to have it go over 300,000 miles as sales person stated was possible.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 40 mph, the front passenger side of the subframe separated and caused the front axle to fracture and damaged the front control arm. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who indicated that the subframe failure was due to severe rusting and corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
I have a 2005 toyota 4runner and the frame is rusting away. The front tow hook already fell off the front frame.
The frame of the vehicle has extensive rust. The metal frame at the front of the vehicle has rusted completely through. The tow hooks are hanging by the remaining metal and can be twisted off by hand strength alone. The cross members have holesrusted thru as well. The main frame beams are corroding from the inside out. The quality of rust prevention of the frame is very poor. As a comparison, the body panels are still in good shape with minimal rust.
Right front subframe has rust that has steadily gotten worse despite a 2nd attempt to grind rust off repaint and undercoat. This should not be happening on vehicle that has been meticulously maintained top to bottom including salt and grime removal consistently since purchased brand new . This us soon going to break resulting in vehicle not passing inspection. This should be rectified like the tacoma one picture us the side with holes and undercoating i have been fixing the other sife has no issue
Extreme frame rusting completely thru at the point of being unsafe and unable to put the truck on a lift for any repairs. A number of sae mechanics warned me about driving this truck due to the extreme frame rusting. Sections almost completely separating apart. I have rust proofed and undercoated the under carriage at least three times. Toyota should make good on their negligence to properly rust coat their frames at times of manufacturing.
Brought to mechanic because steering suddenly became a major problem. Frame has deteriorated to the point that truck is un driveable per mechanic. Suspension components are coming detached, main frame has holes and front frame is completely missing. Mechanic says he has never seen a frame rusted out this bad in his 30 years on the job. He said it certainly shouldn't happen to a vehicle 15 years old. After research it is found this is a major problem with these vehicles.
Vehicle is unsafe to drive due to frame corrosion, also steering going out
Severe frame rust:2005 4runner sr5 v8 in stratosphere mica blue.vehicle has been driven in michigan and ohio for its entire life of 104,850 miles as of today.vehicle received complete rustproofing of underbody, underhood and body panels when new.despite undercoating and constant washing in the winter, the frame has experienced significant rust.front cross member is rusted almost completely through and is expectedto break through soon.trailing arm brackets are becoming thin and i have been warned that when they break i will lose control of the vehicle.holes are starting to rust through on frame.mechanic has informed me that underbody coating can not protect from rust that begins inside poorly made frames and that it will become a serious safety concern in the near future. This vehicle has been washed religiously in winter and all inspection/maintenance records are available.body, interior and driveline are in above average condition, and vehicle has been driven below average miles (9500 per year).how can a car manufacturer make a vehicle frame which rusts out this quickly?the vehicle still looks and drives like new on the outside but will literally fall apart at the seams.this vehicle clearly has the same issue that other toyota's have had with frame corrosion but i see no campaign to assist owners with this issue.i have always loved my toyota's but this problem is so severe that not only will i avoid the brand forever but it will also cause me significant financial distress as i cannot afford a frame replacement nor should i have to replace this vehicle at such a low mileage/age.please help.i don't understand how corrosion this severe is possible on a vehicle which has been cared for this well.i have hundreds of records for this vehicle going back to when it was new.
I would like to complain regarding my 2005 4runner.went to have the fluid changed at a dealership in the early part of july 2021 and they could not perform the service due to excessive underbody rust and corrosion . Therefore the i will have to find a service that can remove the corrosion to be able to have the shocks change, differential fluid change and to check and perform service on the brakes. The corrosion is starting to eat at the key components of the vehicle to the point where i may not be able to drive. Steering will be restricted and brakes will malfunction if they cannot get to the remove the areas to service the vehicle.
Excessive frame rust.has had excessive decomposition and rotting in the very front for several years.now noticing rot with large holes near critical structural support near rear axle, spring and shock attachment points.took to local welding shop to see about patching the area near the rear axle and was advised to stop driving the vehicle soon as the frame's integrity is at risk.i am the original owner.well taken care of vehicle, always garaged and routinely washed.
In november 2011, nissan recalled my pathfinder due to rust corrosion that could cause the front suspension to collapse. Nissan bought back my pathfinder, and i used the money to purchase my 2005 4runner. I have discovered that my 4runner has a corrosion issue as well. I have also discovered that toyota knew or should have known about the corrosion issue with its 2005 4runners at the time i purchased mine in november 2011, yet i was not notified about the issue at the time of purchase from the toyota dealership or at anytime since i've owned the vehicle. I will not be driving my 4runner, as it poses a serious safety risk. Is there a particular reason why the national highway traffic safety administrationis taking so long with its current investigation concerning complaints of frame corrosion with respect to 2005 4runners?
Upon recent inspection of my vehicle, it was noted that the frame is severely corroded and rusted to the point where collapse or breaking of the frame is possible while driving. Apprently the frame was not properly treated for rust protection and can now be unsafe for driving. Enclosed are pictures of the rusted frame.
Looked under truck to check for rust, found multiple spots with under-body frame rot (rust, could potentially rust through). The rust could potentially cause a major accident. Unsure if previous owner used "fluid film" or similar product to protect the under-body - i recently found out about pervasive rust rot in the under-body of the 4th gen 4runners. This is most likely caused by the salt solution placed on roads to help prevent ice and snow formation. It seems that toyota used a less-than-up-to-the-task frame for these vehicles - frames that allow rust to form rather easily and rot it from the inside out. As far as i am aware, there are recalls for similar toyota vehicles such as the tacoma and sequoia with respect to frame rot.the frame seems to be solid, but since heavy rusting has already occurred, it is not economical or worthwhile to replace the frame. Eventually the frame will rust through and cause a major issue.
More than once a mechanic working on my truck said there is extensive rusting of my frame. I treated the frame two years ago with rust inhibitor and 3m undercoating. That was the second time i undercoated my truck. I know toyota had a recall for thefor rusted frames, the settlement covered tacoma trucks from the model years 2005 through 2010, sequoias from 2005 through 2008, and tundras from the 2007 and 2008 model years but they excluded 4runners. There seems to really be an issue with the materials used. I am worried the frame will break beyond repair since there is no good metal to weld to.
The fram is rusted and no time known will it give out n cause serious accident.
Major rust/corrosion issues with the frame making it unsafe to drive without major work to repair
Frame rust issue identical to the frame rust recall issues of tacoma, tundra an sequoia.learned of it when the vehicle was brought in for trade-in, significantly reducing the value of what the trade-in should have been.the vehicle had been to the same toyota service center for 12 years -- they never mentioned it.toyota headquarters said they had no responsibility towards the issue and suggesting bringing the vehicle to another dealer for trade-in to see if they would value the vehicle higher if they didn't notice.a private sale would have been impossible knowing the rust issue now exists.
The chassis is severely and prematurely rusted and is in need of repair.
Frame is rusted thru on both front sides where the control arms attach
Severe frame rust has made the vehicle unsafe to drive. The car has only 54,000 miles on it
While the truck was in for inspection and maintenance. Upon removing the front skid plate to access the oil filter, we found major frame rust / rot / holes in frame on passenger side under front skid plate. The cross memeber which holds the front axel and suspension is completely rusted out. The vehicle is undrivable at the moment and will need costly repairs to even come off the lift.
Frame rusting and i have rust holes in frame
Frame is rusted on the front of my toyota that is failed to pass inspection.if required i can send my failed inspection report and pictures of the rusted frame.
2005 toyota 4runner limited, excessive frame corrosion/rotting
Hi, i own a 2005 4runner and i am concerned about the heavy amount of rusting on the frame.the frame is rusty which is causing heavy flaking of the affected material.the body of the vehicle is pristine but i fear that the premature rusting of the frame will affect the ability to safely drive my 4runner in the future.i am a special education teacher with two young daughters and don't have the income to go out and replace the frame or buy a new vehicle.this 4runner is the only vehicle i own and is my daily driver.my students and their guardians depend on me to arrive safely to school everyday so there is consistency in my students' lives.i have seen many 4runners in this age range suffer from this same corrosion.i am concerned that my family will be injured in a minor accident or the vehicle's safety mechanisms failing because of frame damage.i am also concerned that i will lose my only means of transporting myself to work.i am a huge fan of toyota, especially 4runners, and want to keep mine around for a long time.keeping toyota vehicles around for a long time is what the company was built upon.
Lost end of muffler ("exhaust tip") while driving due to under body rust. The inspector also noted to me the high level of rust building up on the under body at the last safety inspection. You can see the muffler breakage on img_1722. There also appears to be rust on all welding joints and frame surfaces.
Excessive underbody rust, rusting frame joints, and rotting frame members from the inside out.
Was backing out of a parking space while turning and front-passenger wheel swing arm completely detached from the frame due to severe rust. When attempting to pull onto flatbed tow truck, both front tow-hooks completely pulled out of frame also due to rust. Seems that the frame os completely rusted and unsafe on 11 year old vehicle.
Swipe toyota found significant rust of my frame. Car has 142,000 miles, located in kentucky.
Excessive frame corrosion. Mounting bracket that connects the lateral arm to the frame failed due to the deterioration of the frame. The rear axle is no longer perpendicular to the length of the car. I am experiencing a symmetric acceleration and braking performance and unpredictable steering.
Rotten frame due to corrosion like the tacoma model.
The frame of the vehicle is rusted, the rust integrity may result in a steering failure.
I took my 4-runner to my mechanic on april 1, 2019 to have the brakes checked and a cv boot repaired.my mechanic called me the next day and informed me that the main support beam of the frame on the passenger side was rusted out and virtually missing on 3 of the 4 sides of the beam.he told me the vehicle could break in half if i hit a bump on the road.
We recently purchased this vehicle from a private sale and when the mechanic looked at it there is a severe amount of rust making it unsafe to drive.this is not "normal" rust and we do not want our 16 yr old driving something that could break at anytime.i believe that this vehicle falls into the lawsuit category, for unreasonable rusting.toyota should have to fix a frame, regardless of age, if they put bad parts on it and the rusting isn't always detected in the earlier life of the vehicle until it becomes "unsafe".
We just had our 2005 toyoya 4runner in for the yearly inspection and were told that it will not pass inspection next year as the frame is rusted and corroded out. We bought the vehicle used in 2017 from a local toyota dealer and when complained about it at a routine inspection was told it is normal wear and tear. We also have a 2000 lexus 300 no rust issues what so for a vehicle 5 years older. I have seen numerous complaints and even a class action lawsuit against toyota regarding rusting frame issues with the toyota 4runners 2005-2011. Our mechanic even called toyota about the frame rust and issue and was told that there is nothing they can do. Now i completely understand that a vehicle of the age and miles(141,809) will have issues that need to be fixed and replaced, but to have the frame rust out and it is not going to pass inspection the following year! that is ridiculous! we still owe on the personal loan for this vehicle! please look into this issue!
I purchased this vehicle new in 2005 in virginia. It has spent the last 13 years in north carolina where salt is rarely used on the roads.i occasionally take it on the beach but always fully spray the underbody with fresh water afterwards. About 2 yrs ago i started noticing severe rust near critical welds on the frame.i cleaned, primed and painted these areas the best i could could to try and slow down the rust. Yesterday when getting tires mounted my mechanic told me the rust is getting to the point it isa safety issue. I'm getting ready to drive cross country the end of the month so this was not good news.i have maintained the truck meticulously and only have 130k miles on it.i find it hard to believe toyota has not addressed this problem.i can't afford a new truck and selling this one, though it looks and drives mint, will be difficult or impossible once the frame is inspected. I have never had a vehicle rust out like this though i owned many when i lived in the heavy salt using state of ny years ago.there is definitely a problem with these 4runners that toyota is failing to address, i just hope it doesn't decide to fail when i'm 2000 miles from home and driving 70 mph.
Toyota dealer failed safety inspection due to rear suspension arm rusted off and a hole rusted through frame. Only has 124,000 miles. Toyota said that vehicle is unsafe to drive and rear end may lift during a hard stop. Rear brake lines are also rusted out.
My wife took the vehicle to get a state inspection and was informed it would not pass due to corrosion of the frame.we contacted the manufacturer, nationally and locally, to see what could be done.we were told toyota would not replace the frame and they could not recommend a repair.essentially, too bad.we contacted several body shops and were told toyota repair instructions advise against welding on the frame and their insurance would not cover the repair.so there is no fix.the rust has not been apparent until this years inspection and i guess we were fortunate that is was found.but the car runs great and nobody that didn't look under the car would know about an impending catastrophic failure.toyota did replace frames on similar year tacoma's, tundra's and sequoia's but that was due to a class action law suit.apparently they will not make these vehicles safe without outside influence.at a minimum a notice should be sent to owners advising them their frames should be thoroughly inspected before its too late.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that there was a crack in the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 73.000.updated 02/13/12 the consumer was worried the cracks would interfere with operation of the air bags. Updated 02/17/12
My rear frame rotted out causing my control arm to break off. The vehicle was extremely hard to control causing a rollover accident.
Premature frame rust
Extensive body frame rust.large rusted out holes in frame. Unable to get ma. Vehicle yearly inspection sticker. Emissions test failed (ma. Inspection station #pb004755). Vehicle bought new 6/2005recommended not to drive vehicle due to extensive holes in frame.
Low mileage car and parts of the frame are falling a part. Dealer refuses to service car as it is unsafe. Toyota says they have no problems with the 4runners rusting just there trucks at this time...?
I have large holes in the frame of our toyota 4-runner. It appears that the frame could split or break to possibly cause an accident. The rest of the vehicle is in excellent condition. It seems that substandard materials or coating were used to cause this issue.
While driving at highway speeds of 55 mph the vehicle started to swerve back and forth between the lanes and was extremely hard to correct. Once i pulled over i looked underneath and the frame is extremely corroded and the lower control link support on the right rear of the vehicle had completely corroded and broke. I had the shop look at it as well as myself and the frame has several holes and was advised that the entire frame is falling apart and is beyond repair due to the rust/corrosion. It is only affecting the frame as the entire rest of the vehicle is in great working order and condition.
Excessive frame rust.rust perforation on frame adjacent to front suspension attachments.air conditioner condensation dripping onto frame, as well as poor coating quality have led to premature rusting and rust through.
Frame and rear differential rust- extreme
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that there was extensive rust on the frame of the vehicle, which had completely rotted due to the failure. The frame was coated, but the failure continued. Both dealers (sansone toyota, 90-100 us-1, avenel, nj 07001, (732) 815-0500 and bay ridge toyota, 6401 6th ave, brooklyn, ny 11220, (888) 995-2299) provided no solution and the vehicle was excluded from a manufacturer recall. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was excluded from a manufacturer recall. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
My vehicle failed inspection due to a hole in the frame.my vehicle has the same frame as the tacoma trucks that have frame rot and have already been recalled.
Frame rust, drivers side to the front by the exhaust as the frame starts to turn up.will need to be repaired before next vehicle inspection ... Just passed this years inspection.this is not covered under the toyota recall for other truck frame vehicles.
Undercarriage (body) rust is continuing to worsen.this has been ongoing for several years. In fact when our 2003 toyota tacoma was recalled for this very same issue, i questioned why the 4runners were not part of the recall to my local toyota dealer and also headquarters.i did not receive favorable answers.
The amount of rust on the frame is getting quite worrisome. This is a known issue and recall with the tacoma, sequoia and tundra, so why not the 4-runner? there are holes starting to form and metal flakes off all the time. It has gotten to the point where it is a legitimate safety concern.
I just bought this vehicle in november 2016 from toyota of kingsport. I had a muffler replaced on 3/29/2017 due to a hole.the technician called me back to ask if i was aware of structure damage to the frame.i was not aware of any issues.he pointed out where on both sides of the frame was rusted completely out. The technician stated that the frame was rusting from the inside out. Now i am concerned because i drive my children around in this vehicle. I looked to see if toyota had recalled the frame and was unable to find anything but the same model trucks and sequoiashave been recalled. I would think that all the 2005 vehicles were made from the same metal.
The vehicle is just 11 years old with about 150k miles.frame is rusted to the point the dealership is refusing to do repairs for fear of breaking the frame and has indicated i need a new vehicle.the vehicle has been stored in a garage since the day it was purchased.this includes work and home.several times a year it was taken to the car wash including undercarriage washes during winter months when possible.it has had every toyota and dealership recommended maintenance performed at the dealership.
Extensive rust has destroyed both the front and rear suspension crossmembers. Mechanic shop has advised that it will no longer pass virginia state safety inspection and must be condemned. After researching this condition further, i am finding this to be a common failure found in 3rd generation 4runners utilized in climates where road salt/chemicals are used.
I was pulling into my garage very slowly and when i stepped on the brake, the car accelerated rapidly like it was shot out of a cannon.i went through the back of the garage (sheet rock, 2x4, freezer and other items that were stored in the garage).i was air born andlanded about 10 feet from the house with my foot still on the brake.the airbags did not deploy and i hit my face on the steering wheel, injuring my nose and required 7 stitches in my lip. I could've been killed but god was on my side.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frame was rusted. The contact called the ira toyota of manchester dealer (603-624-1800, 33 auto center rd, manchester, nh 03103) and was told that there was no recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000. *dt
We were advised that our 2005 toyota 4runner's frame had deteriorated from rust to a point where the vehicle is no longer safe to operate.we purchased this vehicle new, done all the advised service, and taken every precaution to assure longevity.it's unfortunate and disturbing that toyota has 'frame recalls' on 2005 tundra and tacoma trucks but not the 4runner.our vehicle, other than the frame, is in perfect working order. This seems to me a clear case of corrupted or otherwise faulty materials used for the construction of toyota frames for these 2005 dated vehicles.toyota, as a virtue of their own quality standards, should stand behind their products.if they're unwilling, this will should be forced upon them by the regulators.
Frame rust and failure.i have had to have patches put in.
I own a 2005 toyota 4runner which is rusting on the chassis and rear end housing toyota tell me that there no recall on the 4 runner or tundra but sequoia is recalled there must be a complaint filed some where wecannot wait for somebody to die as a result the rear end falling out or front end break away you must check into that just check online for all the complaints.
Toyota dealer told me that my frame is soft its dangerous.
Excessive frame rust and underbody rust.most weld points and frame assembly is degrading from rust.transmission coolant lines have cracked and leaked.
The frame is rusting excessively.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to a-1 toyota (50 amity rd, new haven, ct 06515) significant rust was discovered on the subframe of the vehicle. The mechanic found a hole in the radiator support and another hole on the driver side frame rail. The contact was informed that the vehicle was safe to drive however, the prolonged rust build up could lead to a severe mechanical failure. The contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vin. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a grinding metal noise. The contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and noticed that the entire frame was corroded. The contact stated that the front bumper frame rusted out and the rear passenger side frame suspension mount was corroded through and detached. The contact stated that the rear driver's side frame suspension mount was heavily corroded, but was ok for the time being. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 183,000.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to south hills toyota (2403 washington road, canonsburg, pa 15317, (724) 743-1144) in april of 2018 for state inspection. The contact was informed that the vehicle's subframe was severely corroded and the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.

The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance at dayton toyota (2291 us-130, dayton, nj 08810, (732) 329-9191), the contact was informed that there was severe rust to the subframe of the vehicle. The contact was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 217,000.
My 2005 toyota 4 runner has become so rusted along the frame and undercarriage that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. I have used the vehicle for highway and normal road use. I bought the vehicle brand new and have never towed anything. My tundra was purchased at exactly the same time and has been driven under the same conditions. It has no rust problems. There seems to be a problem with the undercoating of some of toyota's vehicles. Any information you have would begreatly appreciated.
Severe undercarriage rust, excessive corrosion of alloy rims ,all 5 wheels.
Hello,i have a 2005 toyota 4runner with 57,000 and the frame is badly rusted with a hole in the subframe and toyota says there is no problem with the 4runner frames but does admit they have problems with the tacoma frames and the trucks share the same platforms. What can be done for an owner of a truck that has a frame that is falling apart but no rust on the body?the frames are poorly made and can give out.
Upon inspection of the frame i have found an excessive amount of rust.this concerns me in two ways, possible frame failure and loss of any value the truck may have.
While performing an oil change in the vehicle, the dealer found that the undercarriage was severely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was getting progressively worse. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 48,856.
My rear frame rotted out causing my control arm to break off. The vehicle was extremely hard to control causing a rollover accident.
Purchased 2005 toyota 4runner in 2012 with 58k miles. Always washed undercarriage. Mechanic began patching rust on frame 2011. Its beyond repair now with 128k miles. Frame is completely dangerous
I have a 2005 toyota 4runner purchased new garaged kept with 66200 miles with excessive frame and underbody rust. I am concerned without a frame replacement from toyota i will not be able to drive it as the safety crash standards not to be acceptable as new or frame to brake and cause an accident.
Steering wheel pulls to the right when brakes applied ,at random times( a few times it has done same to the left)this dose not occur all the time, but never gives you warning(almost hit another car last week it pulled so hard) this very seldom happens twice in a row ,i know this is a very hard problem to find but i'm afraid this will cause a accident sooner or later ??? there must be someone who has had this problem or can find a answer ????
Front frame rusted beyond repair.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic, she was informed that significant corrosion had developed on the front end of the undercarriage. The contact was then referred by the independent mechanic to the dealer where she was informed that while was rust found on the undercarriage of the vehicle, the vehicle was safe to operate and no repairs were needed. A month after the dealer inspection, the contact stated that an abnormal sound was coming from her brake pedal upon depression without warning. Once the contact made it home, she had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic initially informed her that the vehicle was a total loss however, he and another mechanic were able to remove a large portion of the rust and replaced the brake pads, rotors, power steering line, hose, and brake pads. Recently, contact stated that her son had driven the vehicle and that the vehicle began to exhibit the same brake failure that had been replaced by the mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
Frame and suspension mounting points rusted out causing a suspension mounting bracket failure.vehicle was pulling away from stop.
The frame is very rusty and looks like it's going to break soon. This is the same frame as a tacoma pickup
Low mileage car and parts of the frame are falling a part. Dealer refuses to service car as it is unsafe. Toyota says they have no problems with the 4runners rusting just there trucks at this time...?
Frame broke lower control arm cross member left side no steering half pulled out of transmission.
The frame underneath the front bumper is totally rusted and crumbling.my mechanic showed me yesterday and said the radiator would fall out.also the control arrms to the front two wheels are very badly rusted.
Frame rust - problem is the same as what has happened to same year toyota tacoma pickups.these vehicles should also be recalled and have the same fix applied to them as was applied to the tacoma pickup.purchased vehicle used in october and had shop put it up on a lift 2 months later for routine maintenance.they said frame rusted and unsafe to drive.
Thank you.
The frame of the vehicle is rusted, the rust integrity may result in a steering failure.
Takata recall, i took my 2005 toyota 4runner sr5 to a toyota dealership today to get a tire rotation. They told me my frame was too rusted out to lift up for fear of harming my car. I had new tires put on at the same dealership in october and then new trd wheels installed at another dealership where not a single mechanic mentioned rust on my frame. Apparently it's my rear passenger side that has it the worst.
Toyota dealer failed safety inspection due to rear suspension arm rusted off and a hole rusted through frame. Only has 124,000 miles. Toyota said that vehicle is unsafe to drive and rear end may lift during a hard stop. Rear brake lines are also rusted out.
Excess frame rust. Mechanic states frame has severe rust all over the entire frame and is in eminent danger of completely rusting through. Major frame repair or replacement is needed.
Severe frame and front end rust, vehicle well taken care of> should have been part of tacoma recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Under body rusttook to costco to replace tires - they say significant rust on left side.tool to jiffy lube for oil change one week later - they say significant rust and cannot remove rear differential to replace fluid due to rusted bolt.
The fram is rusted and no time known will it give out n cause serious accident.
*ln
Excesive rust under body. Exhaust system and frame.
My vehicle failed inspection due to a hole in the frame.my vehicle has the same frame as the tacoma trucks that have frame rot and have already been recalled.
Passenger side a arm bracket broke.
My mechanic found significant rotting damage on the chassis of my 2005 toyota 4runner.he advised me not to drive the vehicle as the wheel could break off.i contacted toyota, but they told me there were no recalls on the vehicle, even though chassis rotting has been a problem with their older vehicles.
The frame is rusted out at the rear and at the radiator support and at the rear stabilizer on both sides and the rear bumper is rusted into on both sides of the frame in myopinion it is unsafe to use. My wife had a close call when the rear stabilizer broke the from the frame on both sides
The frame rusted through at the connecting point of the rear passenger side trailing arm.much of the frame in this area is severely rotted by rust. I noticed that the vehicle was not tracking down the road very well, which was abnormal.upon returning home i found the problem of the rusted frame.
Frame is rusted thru on both front sides where the control arms attach
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that there was extensive rust and corrosion on the front and rear suspension as well as the frame of the vehicle. Langway toyota of newport (285 e main rd, middletown, ri 02842, (401) 619-5400) diagnosed that the frame and rear axle mount were faulty, and further extensive servicing was required. The dealer was not authorized to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected and diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: dp18002 (structure). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 143,000.
3/4 of the underneath of my 2005 toyota rusted out and released the bar that held my tire in place. I drove 80 highway miles not knowing that the tire was not supported.
Inferior, steel, rusted frame and suspension, too dangerous to drive.consumer stated my truck is back on shop with stetler dodge they are ripping it apart.
There's excessive rusting of the chassis, axle, differential and other components under the vehicle. I'm the original owner and observed rust formation within the first year of ownership. The suv has only 84k miles and is garaged most of the time. I have been using rust inhibitors to slow the process.
My 4 runner has extreme frame corrosion due to poor quality.the vehicle is now suffering numerous safety issues as a result. The frame is not repairable and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. It has less than 100,000 miles.the vehicle will not pass state inspection.
Frame has rusted similar to tacoma and seqouiya recalls and do not see why they have not been recalled.
Suspension. Vehicle used in the ne us--ma.vehicle is unstable at highway speeds.wanders.impossible to keep steady.heavy rattle in suspension at all times (first noted in 2015), except on very smooth pavement.significant rusting noted on repairs.may not pass safety inspection.no body rust.mileage less than 150k.
Exhaust smell entering cabin, gets worse when accelerating on ramp. Even with recirculation of airflow heat and or air conditioner still smells bad. I have to drive with windows open even in winter. Also rust all over suspension, undercarriage. Please tell if this is a common problem and safety recall. This started shortly after purchasing the truck in 2017 and has gotten worse since. The muffler was replaced already.
2005 toyota 4runner 156k miles with substantial rust and corrosion to frame to the point where mechanic can no longer service the vehicle.
Nothing happened yet but found upon checking that the rear differential upper control arm that is attached to the frame is rusted through. I am afraid it will detach while driving and can cause an accident. I have removed the flaky metal myself in the summer of 2020 and painted it to avoid further rusting. The crossbar in the front that is supporting the radiator is rusted through as well.the metal that is holding the tank is gone too.
Too much rust on the frame of my car only have 63000 miles and always garaged
Extensive, rapidly spreading rust throughout the vehicle's frame and fuel tank supports leaving little or nothing holding the fuel tank or areas of the suspension together. Vehicle cannot be safely placed on a lift for service because of thin metal in the bottom of the frame. .
Frame and rear differential rust- extreme
The frame is rusting away
- the contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving at 30 mph the vehicle began to wobble from left to right. The contact stated he was unable to control the vehicle when driving more than 30 mph due to the wobbling of the vehicle. The dealer stated that it appeared that the stabilizer bar was cut in half by a hacksaw. The dealer replaced the stabilizer bar, and there have not been any other occurrences. The vehicle current mileage was 27,000.
Rear electronic height control goes to the highest position and stay there. Taken to the dealer x3. The fact that there is no failsafe to prevent the vehicle from staying in the high position and being driven when the vehicle is unstable and a rollover risk.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while the vehicle was receiving maintenance work from an independent mechanic, the mechanic informed the contact that the sub frame was very rusted. The mechanic was unable to complete the maintenance work. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where they provided the contact an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 142,500.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4-runner. The contact noticeda metal cap attached to the valve stems was frozen, preventing him from removing them. As a result, he was unable to add air to the tires. The contact expressed concern over possibly losing control of the vehicle and crashing due to the tires being under inflated. An authorized dealer refused to remove the frozen caps and informed the contact the tire sensors would fracture if they did so, and he would be responsible for the repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and was going to contact the dealer on the contact's behalf. The failure and current mileages were 47,241.
Tire stem valve caps are unable to be removed due to a defect in manufacturing (all 4 tires plus the spare). I am unable to add or remove air from the tires causing a safety hazard. The manufacturer acknowledges the problem but refuses to repair or replace at no charge. The only option offered by the manufacturer is they have offered to break the part off and charge us to replace it (>$500 repair). No accident has yet been caused.
I am constantly having to take my car into my tire dealer, because they are losing tire pressure, and the tpms tire sensor indicator is showing the tires are low.i am concerned thatthis is a serious dangerous situation. I feel toyota should replace theses defective sensors at no charge.
My 05 toyota 4runner haspressure monitors and the valve cores continue to leak air, making the vehicle unsafe to drive, since the tires are continuously losing air and going flat. Have to constantly be stopping and putting more air in them. Tire shop says the stems have to be replaced through toyota, since they are part of the tire pressure monitoring safety system. Toyota just puts air in them and send me on my way.this has been happening since 07.even with extended warranty, they will not replace the stems.i just do not drive the toyotamuch anymore, since i do not think it is safe.i have other vehicles to drive. Butwould like to have a safe vehicle again.i have spoken to toyota hq and they refer me back to the dealer.. I do not live close to the dealer, several hours drive to get there.

The tpms sensors on my 2005 toyota 4runner failed when the metal valve stem caps provided with the car corroded to the valve stem threads.the vehicle had roughly 60k miles on it when this began to occur.i inquired about this at the dealer and was told that the issue was caused by road salt and the metal caps on metal valve stem threads (dissimilar metals).i was also told that toyota recognized the cause of the issue as the metal caps and replaced them with plastic caps on newer 4runners.the dealer was unwilling to replace the tpms sensors on my vehicle however without having to pay for the parts and labor (~ $500 job).the toyota customer service hotline told me the same story on two occasions.after searching on a toyota 4runner forum, i discovered this to be a common problem on many 4runners.my tpms sensors were replaced with regular valve stems by a local tire shop, which is what is currently on my vehicle.to date, i haven't had an issue with the tires as i regular monitor the pressure manually.i am concerned with the issue and toyota's unwillingness to reconcile the safety concern.
The frame rusted through at the connecting point of the rear passenger side trailing arm.much of the frame in this area is severely rotted by rust. I noticed that the vehicle was not tracking down the road very well, which was abnormal.upon returning home i found the problem of the rusted frame.
I had my electronic sun/moon roof replaced a year or so after the warranty, because it jammed in the open position. Toyota replacement charge was $2000 +. It jammed again this spring and the "basic repair" has not worked and toyota wants to again charge $2000 +. This is a chronic complaint about this make/model and feature and toyota only will warrant any repair/replacement work to 1 year.
Rear passenger side traction arm broke away from the frame while driving.after further investigation, the entire passenger side frame from the front cross member to the top of the rear wheel is completely rusted away.if this occurred at highway speed instead of 15 mph death would be a high possibility for my 17-year-old son.
Purchased 2005 toyota 4runner in 2012 with 58k miles. Always washed undercarriage. Mechanic began patching rust on frame 2011. Its beyond repair now with 128k miles. Frame is completely dangerous
Frame rusting through on front crossmember, under radiator.tow hook completely gone.
My dashboard is cracked from the length of the drivers side to the passenger side. I received a letter from toyota in 2015 about this condition and they were extending the warranty until may 2017. The local dealer said they could not order the new dashboard until january 2016. Mine was ordered, but i have been waiting 11 months and they can't tell me when the dashboard will be in. I would like to know when the new dashboard will arrive. Toyota's letter stated it would take several months to get the parts. The letter also stated i would get another letter once parts are available. I have never received another letter.
My 2005 4 runner chassis is rusting away and multiple dealerships and mechanics told me the car is not safe to drive.i went to get new tires and no locations will even raise the car in the air. I called toyota corporate and even though the same chassis on the same vehicles of tacoma, tundra, and sequoia are recalled, they said nothing is covered under the 4 runner.i cannot even drive my car anymore.
Faulty denso alternators (re-manufactured): 1/6/17 the original alternator failed in my vehicle (after 11+ yrs) and was replaced (unbeknownst to me) with a re-manufactured denso alternator.on 1/19/18, that alternator failed, after only 1 year and 2 weeks.on 1/20/18 the service dept at the dealership replaced that failed alternator with what turned out to be a defective alternator that did not work because the bearings ceased, which the mechanic discovered immediately upon installation.after inquiring about the manufacturer and looking back at my 1/6/17 repair record, i learned that both alternators installed on 1/6/17 and 1/20/18 were denso re-manufactured alternators. I had assumed new alternators would be installed. I then requested that a brand new alternator be installed instead, which happened on 2/1/18.both times, on 1/6/17 and 1/19/18 my vehicle had to be towed to be serviced.first time it died on a fwy off-ramp, second time it died in a parking lot. Denso's website claims "remanufactured denso alternators go through a grueling process . . .new or remanufactured, a denso alternator is a quality component."sorry, but not true!
Frame is suffering from excessive rust inside of frame. The body and other components of vehicle have minimal/average surface rust. Interior of frame near front control arms, rear bumper crossmember, and rear-mid crossmember are rusting from the inside out.
I love my 4runner and would like to drive it for many more miles as it runs and drives great. But the frame is rusting out, just like the tacoma and tundra frames that were recalled by toyota. 4runner frames should also be recalled for prematurely rusting out and causing safety concerns
I love my 2005 toyota 4-runner sr5, it has been an excellent vehicle and i would plan to keep it for another 5 years or so. The body, paint and drive train are in great shape and the car has never been in an accident. The problem is that the frame is rotting out from underneath making it unsafe to drive. I have contacted toyota, case number 1804060267, to see what they could do to no avail.
Rusted frame of vehicle including cross bar under radiator and on struts attached to wheels. Found during routine maintenance by auto mechanic.
There's excessive rusting of the chassis, axle, differential and other components under the vehicle. I'm the original owner and observed rust formation within the first year of ownership. The suv has only 84k miles and is garaged most of the time. I have been using rust inhibitors to slow the process.
The frame is rotted outand is very dangerous to drive. There has been pieces of it falling off. The whole frame is rusty and cannot be repaired. I sent toyota a message and never received a reply. Any help would ? these vehicles should be repaired as they are very dangerous.any help would be appreciated.
Rust!frame is rusting severely.its looks to be a matter of time before something major fails on the frame. Most recently, the heat shield above the catalytic convertor rusted off and fell from the moving vehicle. The mounting bolts had rusted to nothing allowing the heat shield to become loose and eventually fall off.
Overwhelming amount of rust on frame
The frame of the car is completely rusted with holes in it per my mechanic. Other toyota trucks have been recalled for this issue but not the 4runner.
Two service center refused to worked on 4-runner because of major rust issue. This is a garaged 58,000 4-runner with parts that are falling off from the underside. Toyota claims they do not have rust problems with there 4runner.
This vech. Has excessive frame rust to the point of being unsafe to drive
I just bought this 4 runner used and i've all of a sudden had super bad rusting around the frame and also around the radiator and where the skid plate is attached where my mechanic says he's worried about my safety and other drivers on the road, i personally feel like the integrity of the framing system and suspension is being flawed and i believe that i and the millions more that are being effected by this should be taken care of.
Frame is rotting
Take to shop for leak tramission line the shop owner said my 4runner has cancer and it growing excessive rotting please help i can't stop the cancer
Bought vehicle and 1st service was notified that i have massive amounts of frame rust. Vehicle was purchased in south carolinawhere it rarely snows.
My 2005 toyota 4runner has only 61,500 miles registered on the odometer. This vehicle has never been involved in any accidents. The chassis/frame exhibits severe corrosion. It is my belief the integrity and safety of the vehicle, its passengers and other motors are at risk as a direct result of the deteriorated chassis condition.
There is a massive amount of rust on the frame of the truck. I was at a toyota dealer where they were replacing tacoma frames.the pile of frames they have been taking out look so much better than mine that i am amazed that 4runner are not included in the recall.
The frame is rusting through from the inside out.i have owned the truck since new and it only has 108000 miles on it.toyota recalled the tacoma model (which shares the same frame), but for some reason they have not recalled the 4runner.if i didn't catch this now it could have collapsed and caused an accident.
My toyota4runner , 2005 was speeding and i couldn't control to stop it. Finally i managed to steer and hit the median of the highway and it stopped. There was a damage to my car andinjury. I contacted toyota about the accident but they are not fully cooperating to inspect and fix my car.
Air bag warning light is on,always on, in motion, park. It won't go off.
California owned vehicle with rust on the frame.
During a state inspection the shop told me that our 2005 toyota 4runner had some frame rust issues. Since the frame of the 4runner is the same basic unit as the tundra and tacoma that have open recalls for frame rust, the 4runner should be included in the same recall. As you can see in the picture of the aft frame, the corrosion has formed large holes in the frame.
Purchased vehicle used. Found holes rotted through the frame of vehicle near driver's side wheel well and where lower control arm attaches to the frame. Heavy rust on entire frame of vehicle.
2005 toyota 4runner 156k miles with substantial rust and corrosion to frame to the point where mechanic can no longer service the vehicle.
I have meticulously maintained my 2005 toyota 4runner only to have my mechanic show me that my frame is completely rusted.my mechanic and my auto body guy says my car is unsafe to drive anywhere, anytime and at any speed.this seems like a design defect and i think toyota should do the right think and administer a frame recall for this vechicle
My problems is the frame is very rusty body still in good condition i say 90 % but the frame is more at 60 % rusty what i can do , i care for safety toyota company , they can take care about this problem are not cost me anything.
When i took my vehicle in for its 103,000 mile maintenance i was told that the frame was so rusted that if i should have an accident it could break into. Was told i should just get rid of it and not say anything. I have taken this vehicle in every six thousand miles to the dealership where i bought it for service and was not happy to think that they informed me about this problem now and not sooner.
The frame is rusted and rotted so bad that it doesn't pass inspection
I am having deep rust issues on my 4runner v8 limited frame mostly near the catalytic converter.the rust is so bad there is a big hole on both size of the frame 3inch tall 7 inch wide.i have found some loose nuts inside of the frame rails, not sure where they are from and there are a lot of broken frame parts on the frame rails.a 13year old truck shouldn't have that much rust
2005 toyota 4runner been plagued with frame rust issues and recently a stabilizer bracket broke when going over a small bump.upon investigation, the frame is rusted completely through in that area and numerous other areas.thankfully my son was not traveling at a high rate of speed because it was uncontrollable.very dangerous situation, my son could have been killed!why is toyota handling frame rust issues with other models like tacoma but not the 4runner?
Brought vehicle to repair shop for muffler and tailpipe inspection. Repair shop foundframe cracked and rusted along with steering shaft broken.repair shop indicated that there is no recall on 4runners yet this is a known problem with the 2005 4runner. Repair shop stated it would cost $6000.00 for new frame from toyota dealer. Hartford toyota superstore has done oil changes on this vehicle since purchase yet has never brought the frame problem to our attention.
Frame rust is getting to be an issue. I have one small hole where the metal has given away but the front bumper mount. The vehicle is a 2005 and the frame does not match the rest of the vehicle. I know i am not the first one to talk about this nor the last. Other models of toyota vehicles around this same year have already gotten a frame recall. I would like my vehicle that i have paid a lot of money for to last and not have to be condemned due to a bad frame. Its obvious that from the start the frame was destined to end up like this.
Extensive rusting of the frame.
When the vehicle is slowing down to a stop it randomly lurches forward as if a vehicle is rear-ending mine. The frequency is 3-5 times in a 10 day period.
Frame rusted leading to failure of sway bar brackets causing steering to become unstable. This occurred while driving straight down a highway. The repair estimate is total frame replacement.
1 recall problem not fixed.
The secondary air injection pump is sending error messages and the vehicle is now in limp mode. The vehicle will not go over 30mph.
2005 toyota 4 runner.consumer writes in regards to vehicle sudden acceleration.the consumer stated the sudden acceleration was sporadic. The dealer was unable to duplicate the problem. The last time, the sudden acceleration occurred, the consumer almost hit a vehicle in front of him.
A 2005 toyota 4runner was being parked in a garage and had come almost to a complete stop when the car accelerated and ran into the wall.the brake was unable to stop the acceleration.
Parking car in shopping mall lot.spot is perpendicular to traffic lane. Divider between my spot and opposite spot.divider consists ofelevated planting with mature bushes, and steel post with handicap parking sign. I had my foot depressing the brake pedal. Car had almost stopped when suddenly it accelerated and "bucked forward" onto the parking divider. I continued to press down hard on the brake. Forward momentum stopped after i hit and knocked down the sign post and hit front of a toyota tacoma.that was parked facing me on otherside of divider.the divider with juniper bushes elevated my car and when i stopped the rear wheels were suspended off the pavement.i had my foot on brake during this time, put the gear into park and turned off the ignition.the air bags did not. Deploy.i was trapped in the car by dense juniper bushes on both sides doors, and required assistance to get out of the car.i was not injured - just scared.i called my daughter and son-in-law to the scene, since he drives a toyota tundra, he looked at the floor mat on drivers side.it was in place, had not moved forward.because of the winter weather with snow, we had an after market floormat.my husband had cut off the right front corner to insure that if it did come loose, it could not interfere with the gas pedal.the mat was restrained by rear edge that protruded down and restrained by the two raised clips on the floor. Because of the elevated rear wheels, we needed a tow truck to pull my car off the divider.we had the car towed to my dealer stevinson toyota.their inspection showed no damage to the underside of the car.front right corner damage estimate of $2,200.the mechanic did a computer diagnosis reported "nothing abnormal".said he could not explain why the car suddenly accelerated.he road tested the car and told me it was safe to drive.i could not get immediate repairs, so drove it 120 miles tomy home.it handled normal.
The contact previously owned a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph on normal road conditions when the brakes were applied and the vehicle began to lunge forward, into the proceeding vehicle.the police was not notified. There were no injuries. The opposing vehicle sustained severe damages.the failure was intermittent during sudden braking occurrences. The contact was involved in three collisions as a result of the vehicle accelerating to include damages to the vehicle. The vehicle was damaged and repaired each time the crash occurred. The failure mileage was 5,000. The vin was unknown. The contact no longer owns the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving65 mph with the cruise control activated, the accelerator became stuck. After repeated brake application, the vehicle would not stop.after deactivating the cruise control she was able to stop the vehicle. The dealer was notified, and a technician concluded that the floor-mat was the cause of the failure; however, she believed that the technicians have incorrectly identified the cause of the failure.the failure mileage was 48,675.
On october 30, 2011, i was driving off the new london connecticut highway exit and as i was applying my foot on the brake to slow down, my vehicle would not stop, it felt that it was picking up speed instead. I pumped the brakes couple times and pressed on the pedal as far as it could go to the floor. A great fear came over me and my heart started racing, my whole body stiffened, trying hard to focus, i turned my ignition key off in order for my vehicle to stop. By that time the accident occurred.i live in connecticut.i discovered that my warranty was not registered with toyota financial service insurance. I was also informed by toyota motor sales usa inc. That a recall on my vehicle was not corrected by the dealership before they sold it to me. The floor mat which leaned toward the accelerator pedal and interfered with the accelerator pedal arm and became temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position rather than returning to the idle position.when this matter was confronted to conicelli toyota, they stated that they apologized for the human error in missing the recall before delivery. And in reference to the certification of the vehicle; they have found that there was a computer error between conicelli and toyota motors on the processing of the certification information. The apology and explanation about the computer error is false because in order to register the certification of the vehicle with toyota motors inc., conicelli would have had to confirm the recall repair to qualify in delivering a vehicle to a buyer. A manufacture prohibits a dealership to sell a vehicle without repairing a recall. This computer error was corrected on june of 2012, after the recall repair (warranty expired on july 30, 2012.)conicelli toyota dealership located at 512 ridge pike, conshohocken, pa 19428, sold me a fallacious certified vehicle warranty.
My 2005 toyota 4 runner had 6 unintended acceleration incidents since purchased new in november 2005.i have maintained a log. The intensity of unintended acceleration varied, the tachometer reaching 4000 and above. Duration was estimated from 3 seconds to over 5 seconds.ambient temperature varied from about 73of to 34of. All incidents occurred between early july to early december, and none during very high or very low ambient temperatures. In one case there were several consecutive acceleration surges. All instances were within 5miles of my home. Occurrence has been sporadic, infrequent, and unexpected, and at low speed, mostly in close quarter parking situations and at all times with my right foot on the brake pedal. On september 11, 2008, i notified toyota company by telephone of the incident history; i was given a case number. I complied with a directive to remove after market floor mats that covered the factory mats. Fyi, the after market non-factory floor mats were not interfering with or near the accelerator, and i have had further unintended acceleration subsequent to mat removal.likewise, my foot was not simultaneously on the brake and accelerator pedals. In december 2009 the toyota dealer service manager drove my vehicle 144 miles over a week's period without incident. I believe that evidence does not point towards a sticking accelerator pedal because in all instances my foot was on the brake, and in at least one instance the engine acceleration surged multiple times. The dealer said that there computer did not show relevant codes. My assessment is that there is probably a mechanical, electronic, or software defect in the speed control system. This needs to be taken more seriously. There is no plan. I have suggestions: 1) toyota dealer/company drive my vehicle until an incident occurs; 2) toyotaengineers trouble shoot the problem; this is beyond dealer expertise; 3) toyota temporarily install monitoring equipment that can document future incidents.*tw
Details:vehicle 2005 4 runner limited 4wd.the following occurs when coming to a stop, loud clunk sound and vehicle jolts forward right after a full stop.infrequently the cluck and jolt will occur once stopped.this problem has been noted to occur after about twenty thousand miles.at about 3600 miles the toyota was asked to diagnose the problem. Toyota stated they were unable to note any problems.it is ridiculous to assume that toyota is unaware ofthe cause given the number of units on the road.
On sat. Aug. 14, 2010 my 2005 toyota 4runner accelerated backwards at a high rate of speed as i was attempting to back out of my sister's driveway.i had my foot on the brake at the time and tried to stop the car but could not.i put it in park, nothing happened, then i turned it off and we stopped.we actually backed into a grove of small trees and shrubs which caught us.the car was scratched up a little but not much damage was done.i did call the police and made a report.my younger sister was with me.the backwards acceleration was smooth and did not knock us around much and the stop was kind of smooth.after i turned it off i could not use the brakes anymore but at least we stopped.it was very frightening and i am afraid to drive the car any more.it is parked at my house.first i rented a car and now have borrowed one from a relative.i called corporate toyota and an engineer from eaa is coming to brunswick toyota tomorrow (08/26) to check out the car.toyota offered no help with another car and say it will take up to 30 days to give me the results of the inspection tomorrow.meanwhile i can't drive the car because i am afraid of it and i can't trade it in so i am stuck.the car was almost paid off and has never given me any trouble to speak of until this happened.i never suspected my car since i had not heard of any 4runners having a problem.i am an honest person and am well respected in my community.i wanted to do the right thing but it does not feel like toyota wants to do the right thing.i feel that the least that toyota could do is give me back the $25,000 that i paid for the car.thank you for your time.
I was driving east on i-66 just a few miles from i-495 in fairly heavy traffic around 8:55am on march 11, 2010.i wastraveling approximately 15 mph in the right lane when my 2005 toyota 4runner limited suddenly surged forward as if someone had stomped on the gas pedal.i immediately applied both feet to the brake and the antilock brakes began to shudder.the shuddering lasted 2 to 3 seconds and then the vehicle finally reduced throttle.there was no accident or traffic incident, but the experience was quite unnerving.my vehicle is not part of any recall.i called the dealer and scheduled an appointment for the next day.i continued on to work drivng with my hand on the shifter and i even practiced shifting into nuetral.when the problem had occurred, i did not remember to shift into nuetral.everything had happened so fast and the acceleration was so violent, my only instinct was to apply the brake decisively.i drove home very carefully that evening and then to the dealership the next morning.my original appointment was for 1pm, but i thought it wiser to drive there first thing in the morning.my main concern is that the dealership is insisting that sudden acceleration is not possible on my vehicle.the service manager told me my vehicle could not have done what i described.this is very alarming to me because it happened, which means he either doesn't know the vehicle that well or he's lying.he was not rude and seemed very professional, but he was insisitent that my vehicle could not suddenlt accelerate on its own.the put the vehicel through dignostic testing and found no problems.he also actually drove the vehicle and tested the cruise control and found no problem.the vehicle has never done this before and it has 79k miles on it.i have never had another vehicle do this.my concern is that if it happened to me, it could happen to my wife or someone else in this vehicle or perhaps another.i feel i have an obligation to report it.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4 runner. She stated that while making a left turn into a parking space, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, leaped forward and crashed into a brick wall. The toyota dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. Two identical failure occurred previously; however, they didn't result in a crash. No repairs had been made to correct the failure.the current and failure mileages were under 35,000. Updated 01/07/10.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while attempting to park, the vehicle abruptly accelerated and crashed into three unoccupied vehicles. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact did not sustain any injuries. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 06v253000 (speed control) several years ago. The failure mileage was 49,000. The vehicle was inspected by toyota affiliate and presently in communication with toyota.updated 03/31/15*lj updated 06/24/2015
I have a 2005 toyota roadrunner.on three separate occasions, i had experience where the vehicle seemed to want to accelerate while i was 'braking' to a stop. On the 1st occurrence, i contacted toyota and they told me it was a 'floor mat' issue. I know for sure it was not!!. The other two occurrences happened on the same day, floor mats were not even close to pedal and the pedal was not sticking. I put the vehicle into neutral to stop, and it gave me back control. I believe this is an ecm (engine control module) computer problem or sensor problem. I am a retired electrical engineer , my background is into computers and small microprocessors. I worked over 37 years in the steel industry on control systems using processors similar to those used in automobiles. I am awaiting the problem to happen again, and when it does i'm going to keep filing these complaints. Thank you
I have a toyota 4 runner that suddenly accelerated as i pulled into a parking space jumped over the 6" curb and straight through the front doors of a business.i know my foot was not on the accelerator as i was almost stopped and ready to put the car in park.
2005 4runner. Consumer states sudden acceleration.*tgwthe consumer stated he managed to get the vehicle into neutral and off to the side of the road. When he finally was able to stop it, the brakes were smoking. He noticed the floor mat had slipped under the accelerator. He dismissed it as his error, because he placed the rubber mats on top of the original mats.
The contact owned a 2005 toyota 4runner. When attempting to shift lanes at 30 mph, the accelerator pedal became stuck. After repeated brake application she was able to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, but the technician could not identify the cause of the failure.she was able to trade the vehicle for another vehicle at the dealership.the current and failure mileages were approximately 20,000. The consumer wanted to know the status of her complaint. Updated 02/01/2010.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner.while driving with the cruise control switch activated at 65 mph she applied pressure to the brake pedal to deactivate the cruise control. The cruise control would not deactivate. As a consequence the vehicle continued to accelerate past the intended speed. Upon further inspection she noticed that the accelerator pedal was sticking. She noticed that there was not a floor-mat interference. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the technicians did not provide her with any assistance. No repairs have been made. The failure mileage was 48675.
2005 toyota 4runner. Consumer writes in regards to safety recall *tgwthe consumer stated a floor mat would couldn't cause the sudden acceleration.
Cruise control goes crazy on hills.it waits too long to accelerate and then it floors the gas and the auto transmission downshifts at least two gears and races the engine way past the speed you want and then it finally lets up and the speed drops too low and everything repeats.dangerous and absolutely worthless!has been happening ever since i purchased the car new in 2005.
Dt*: updated 10/25/2006 - the cruise control would not hold speed on uphill grades.the vehicle speed would drop 2-3 mphbelow the cruise control set speed then the passing gear engages abruptly until speed is 3-5 mph above the set speed..the passing gear then decreases and the speed immediatelybegins to deteriorate.

Rear hatch glass exploded while the electric heated defrost system was activated.the electric defrost had been operating for approximately five minutes.the window was in its fully closed position.the vehicle was in motion at approximately 25 miler per hour on a city street.ambient temperature was 39 degrees and dry.
While using rear windshield defroster, rear window shattered/exploded. Toyota acknowledges this problem in t-sb-0189-17. However, they have ended their coverage. While they acknowledge a defective window/defroster; they will no longer fix the issue. I believe it is fair to consider exploding windshields as a safety issue.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving on the highway with the rear defroster activated, the rear window exploded. The vehicle behind the contact's vehicle was showered with glass. There were no injuries. The contact researched the failure and found that the manufacturer issued a short extended warranty for the defective defroster. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 260,000.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While the contact's wife was driving approximately 15 mph, the rear windshield exploded and the glass shattered into pieces without any impact or warning. The contact called rick hendrick toyota of fayetteville at 910-498-0110 (located at 1969 skibo road, fayetteville, nc 28314) and was informed that the extended warranty for that specific part had expired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the warranty expired and that nothing could be done. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 154,391.

The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the rear window shattered. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but the contact was informed that there would be no way of knowing the cause of the shattered window. The vehicle was inspected by an independent window mechanic, who discovered a burned circuit board and faulty cables associated with the defogger system. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 50,000.
Driving approx 30-40mph on standard highway. Florida, 0700, 70 degrees, clear weather. Heard a loud almost explosion... By the time i got my wits about me i realized my rear window was broken. I had not been hit, there is no evidence of any projectile, and not near opposing traffic for something to be kicked up. Shortly before that, i had on both my front vent defroster to clear the morning windshield fog, and the rear window defroster. I smelled a sort of rubber burning smell; after 2 minutes, i presumed it was my ac unit, so i shut it off to see if the smell would dissipate. I did not shut of the rear defroster. About 60s later is when the spontaneous burst happened. I have since run the front ac and windshield defroster, and no hot rubber odor. I had just run the rear defroster 3 days ago as well, no problem. I have had no problems with the window rolling up and down.i do find several complaints about the same thing online in the 4runner, but do not find any toyota,or other safety bulletins, formal notices, or liabilities.
This morning dec-23-2019,raining 60 degree, i was driving on 91 fwy with rear defrost on for rain fog inside.about 15 min after left my home,i hear big pop noise and my rear lift gate glass shattered.i though i had a drive by gun shot,i start searching internet and found there is issue on rear defrost line glass over heat shattered glass.i visited 4 runner owner's forum and i found lot a people experience for same blown rear glass.i called dealership for this issue, and no one recognize it .further search,,,,i found warrant enhancement program-zf7.and this program announce to dealer ship march 2017 with warranty 9 more year extend from a date of purchase??mine is 2005 and even 9 more year warranty still not covered time of their recognition of this program.i called toyota and they denying for expire date of it.i believe they shouldnotify to vehicle owner to not use defrost line,,,,,,,and safety concern, they should extendwarranty for glass.i feel lucky i did not have my kid on my back seat....
On a cold day, activating the rear window defroster causes the glass to shatter from temperature difference. The effects of this can be startling and potential cause the vehicle operator to loose control, especially at highway speeds.
After my rear window shattered while sitting in a parking lot for a few minutes, i had it replaced. The technician found that the connections for the rear window defogger were burned. This caused great heat to build up, causing the window to shatter.

Front passenger side glass "exploded" while driving on the interstate in montana. There were no other vehicles in the area of our toyota when the glass broke. Nothing such as a bird or rock struck the glass it simply shattered! driver and passenger cut by flying glass, but not badly injured.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While stopped at a traffic light, the rear window exploded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (ralph hayes toyota, 3525 clemson blvd, anderson, sc 29621, (864) 368-9242), but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 161,000. The vin was not available.
04-06/my automatic opener on my moonroof was not working.i took it into toyota and was told i was not operating the button correctly.11-06/i opened my moonroof and heard a loud noise once it was fully opened.it then wouldn't close.the cable that pulls the moonroof snapped and destroyed the housing unit.this car is less than two years old but was 2000 miles over my warranty mileage.the part was $2100 and labor was $850.toyota paid for the parts due to my request for 'out of warranty assistance', but still was the part defective?should i have had to pay for the labor too for a car that is less than two years old?
When my toyota had reached approx. 31,000 miles, the sunroof jammed while away from home during a rain storm. Fortunately, the car was still in warranty, so the repair was covered. Note: i rarely used the sunroof except for visibility or for ventilation if parked outside without shelter from the sun, i used the tilt mode only, probably a max 50 times.wind noise was objectionable while driving so the only time it was slid was testing at new and after replacement. I like the sunroof as an emergency exit, if it works? at approximately 68,000 miles (equivalent miles from new versus from the first repair to now.) the sunroof again failed, same condition. Use had been minimal, living in cold mountain state, again, use since repair approx.25-30 times, condition of rails would indicate any wear. I was told it would cost approx $700 for parts, $2,000for labor. Upon contacting toyota, they said they would pay $700 on parts but no labor ($2,000.). They wouldn't disclose if this was an ongoing problem. Is it an ongoing problem with toyota sun roofs? thanks, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 55 mph, the sun roof cover became detached from the vehicle and fell off onto the road. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
Aluminum wheels have excessive corrosion.
Severe undercarriage rust, excessive corrosion of alloy rims ,all 5 wheels.
The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. While driving 55 mph the front of the vehicle started shaking. The contact inspected the wheels, noticed four lug nuts on the passenger front were missing, and the other three tire lug nuts were loose. The dealer stated that they have never seen this kind of problem. There is a recall for the 2003 model (recall# 02v339000). The contact feels his vehicle should be included as part of the recall. The current mileage and failure mileage were 30000.
