Airbag did not deploy andtoyota would not give the name and type and brand and the maker names of the airbag. Toyota is asking me to go to court to have the court order them to release the airbag specifications and the type and brand and the maker. Can you make toyota give me this information?
Takata recall: i received a notice regarding this recall but when i check it says my vehicle has not yet been recalled. There is a class action suit. If my vehicles come has these airbags it needs to be recalled as well so i can get it fixed. I have children that need protected
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. While driving 35 mph, the contact rear ended another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact sustained upper and lower back injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for body repair, but the air bag failure was not diagnosed. The local toyota dealer was not contacted for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Airbag did not deploy in total loss accident.sensor was damaged, yet did not deploy the airbagtoyota company would not give the make and name of the airbag
2002 toyota 4runner air bags did not deploy in a frontal collision that bent the frame & totaled the vehicle.
I own a 2002 toyota 4runner with approximately 94,000 miles.the vehicle primary use is driving less than 10 miles a day off highway.the following alarm lights came on:brake light, check engine light, vsc light, trac light, abs light, and the speedometer quit working.the vehicle was taken to mike calvert toyota in houston, tx to diagnose the problem.their scanner was unable to identify a code for the problem.the conclusion was that the ads control module (skid control sensor) was at fault and thus had to be replaced.the assistant service manager, grant miles advised me not to drive the vehicle until the ads control module was replaced.the cost for the parts and labor was quoted as $2377.01.it would take 3 to 5 business days for the part to be ordered and replaced.i had to rent a car from the dealership because of the vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive and because of the lengthy repair time.the cost of the rental car is approximately $289.00.because of the possible safety issues with the ads control module (skid control sensor-part # 8954035270), i am registering this notification with the nhtsa.
Complete loss of power on acceleration if tires spin...more than one close call!happening since vehicle was new.
Vsc comes on randlomly, at intersections when starting out i lose all power and sometimes sit in traffic, especially when turning left.
Complete loss of power on acceleration if tires spin...more than one close call!happening since vehicle was new.
4 wheel drive would not work.vcs lites and check engine lites on.car engine filled with black smoke and was towed to repair shop.details:drove on freeway and lost traction and than on shoulder with above problem.differential repaired.two days later lites on again and oil leak.
I was trying to pass a car doinga little over 55 mph and heard a loud bang noise.i pulled over and stop the as as quickly as possible. The oil light came on and there was oil was pouring out from underneath the motor.the oil service was kept up to date and was just changed.the car was towed and the engine had thrown a rod.motor needed to be replace. (after doing some research this seems to be a problem with 4 runner engines when they reach 75000 mles or more. I am not alone in this problem.)i was lucky that i didn't get into an accident and that i wasn't on the expressway in chicago. I have emailed toyota.
My 2002 toyota 4runner has a faulty throttle position sensor (part # 89452-35030) that causes loss of power while driving (at all speeds).this loss of power is very dangerous as the car will be driving along at a stable speed and then suddenly just start slowing down even though my foot stays on the gas pedal. This loss of speed puts me at serious risk to be rear-ended by a car behind me or potentially get hit from the side as i am crossing an intersection.my mechanics and i have diagnosed the tps as the issue. This is a very common problem (there are multiple forums on the web about this). Here are some of them below:http://www.yotatech.com/f2/throttle-body-sensor-89452-35030-a-239929/http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16753http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13283http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/118506-throttle-position-sensor.htmlplease get toyota to issue a recall for this part. It is something that needs to get dealt with before there are more serious incidents.thanks.
First, the motor blew for no reason at 152,000 miles.i rebuilt the car and had a new motor put in.i was not aware of the rusting frame issue, however, after driving the vehicle with a lovely new rebuilt motor for about one year, the frame rotted beyond repair causing the power steering to go out.i don't drive much, so there was no excessive exposure to salt.the car was parked in my driveway.it was an exceptionally cold day.i started the vehicle and found the power steering fluid had frozen and lost all the fluid as a result of the steering rack being rusted and weakened.the repair shop told me that the frame and rocker panels are severely compromised too badly to bother fixing the steering rack.the car is not safe to drive.
I filed a nhtsa complaint (odi number 10569206 was assigned)on 13 march 2014 about this vehicle. On 14 march 2014, i took my 4runner to my local toyota dealership after contacting toyota customer service and logging a complaint ( case number [xxx] ) with them on the 14th of march 2014 at their office in california and the customer service rep telling me documentation of the issue at my dealership would help me. This vehicle was bought in nyand remained up north for 10 years and according to emerson toyota auburn, me records at 85,199 miles on 07/11/2012. Service adviser, [xxx] condition1 at 85,199 miles . Used car prep. Vehicle being wholesaled per rich. Check and advise.their findings at 12:55pm on 14 march 2014...case number [xxx], found severe frame rust, holes in frame on right side, holes rusted through frame by gas tank on left side.holes rusted through gas tank and leaking fuel. Upper rear track bar bracket rusted off of rear end housing, rear shocks rusted off. Front brake rotor backing plates rusted through.the vehicle is unsafe to drive due to fuel leak and extreme rust through of frame.i want this vehicle frame and axle fixed or bought back by toyota. A toyota dealership in auburn, me knew of this problem almost 2 years ago and sent it out the door. Totally unsatisfactory. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. While drivingapproximately 55 mph she heard a loud popping noise on the drivers side of the vehicle.she pulled over and she observed smoke and oil coming from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where she was informed that one of the pistons pierced and engine block near the oil filter. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileages were 76,000.the vin was unavailable.
Engine at idle, loud noise, won't start. After taken apart found 4 connecting rods at the bottom of oil pan.
Burning too much oil.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle abnormally began to lose power with the illumination of the check engine light. The contact stated that the aluminum radiator and the bolt that connected the coolant and transmission fluid transfer was faulty. The contact stated that the failure would cause the two liquids to combine abnormally. The contact spoke with several mechanics that confirmed the failure. The failure would cause the vehicle to operate with extremely limited power. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner.while driving 60 mph, the contact heard the piston connecting rod pop when he switched lanes.as a result, oil leaked out of the engine manifold and caused a fire.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that there was catastrophic failure to the engine.the dealer notified the manufacturer to repair the engine.the current and failure mileages were 127,000.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4 runner. While driving approximately 50 mph with the brakes engaged, the power steering failed. The vehicle spun around and crashed into a guard rail. No one was injured. The police were not notified. The rear and front bumper were damaged. The estimated repair cost was $3000. The vehicle was driven to the dealer who stated that the vehicle needed a catalytic converter. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred them back to the dealer for repairs. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 100,000.
My 2002 4runner was purchased brand new from toyota in november of 2001. I live in new york so it does snow 2 or 3 months out of the year. It has been used as a second vehicle to pick up supplies and the like, otherwise it is rarely used. At this time it has approx. 139000 miles. The truck would not start and i took it to a mechanic. I was told there is an extreme amount of rust under the vehicle, the undercarriage, the frame, the gas tank, etc. The problem is the fuel pump but because of so much rust, removing the gas tank to change the fuel pump may cause damage to the components connecting the tank to the frame of the vehicle. It is a shame that toyota sells a vehicle that may need to be junked due to the amount of rust it has. I understand that many other owners have the same problem with the 4runner and something should be done. I bought a 1999 camry brand new prior to the 4runner and i had it for 12 years before giving it to a friend who still drives it to this day and it has no rust. The 4runner runs great all of the years i have owned it but i am being told by my mechanic that it is possible the body of my truck could fall from the frame. At 139000 miles this should not be happening. Toyota should offer some kind of repair to these issues. My truck looks almost brand new except for some rust on the front and rear bumpers and now i may have to junk it.
My frame is rotting out. I just had to replace my rear axle because it had almost rotted through. It was actually weaping gear oil out of small holes through the rot. Some of the frame had to be welded to pass inspection.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that fluid was leaking under the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the rear differential housing was rusted, leaked fluid intermittently and there were multiple holes to the point that the component may fracture. The rear differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available.
Rear differential rust through.
The differential housing is rusting out and is seeping fluid.in addition, the frame is dangerously rusted, especially from the rear axle back.i have been told by a very reputable body shop in the area, that the frame needs to be replaced, but due to the severity of the rust, this is not practical. Toyota is replacing frames on their tundra pickups due to rust, but refuses to cover 4runners, though they share the same frame.if i did not have the vehicle serviced by the dealer regularly, i would be unaware of the dangerous condition of the frame.
(there was no category offered for frame).during a recent automotive service for brakes on 9-26-13 for my 2002 toyota 4runner, i was notified of a rust perforation in the frame body near a rear support mount for the axle making it unsafe for operation.this is a situation where rust forms in the interior of the frame and works its way out destroying the structural integrity of the vehicle. It seems the service technician used to work at a toyota dealership and knew exactly where to look from his prior experience with other 4runner failures.the toyota dealerinformed that this would not be covered.my ?02 4runner is from the same generation (3rd) and of similar design to the tacoma that was recalled for thisthe dealer instructed me to contact the torrance, ca toyota customer service as his dealership would be unable to assist in anyway.it was clear they had encountered this before.through discussion with toyotaca they have no intention of providing any means of relief for a known and well documented safety problem.one rep did comment that the tundra and sequoia had been recently added to the recall but the 4runner was ?not yet? on the recall list. It seems toyota views the products to be different due to the body style differences or us vs japanese built products.they also clearly have no intention to escalate internally.i was instructed to file a complaint with nhtsa and ntsb.research on line shows that there is a very widespread issue that toyota is clearly choosing to ignore.web information suggests that cold climate and the axle bracket in close proximity to the exhaust, are primary factors.how can you recall one model for a rusted frame due to safety but not another?personal photos available.huge numbers of photos and reports available online - search " rusted frame 4runner" or similar.
Recently purchased this vehicle and started cleaning it, after i drove it home and pressure washed undercarriage, pieces of the rear differential started flying off and gear oil started running out of holes. I have a 1971 dodge challenger with original rear end that has never been in garage and have never seen a rearend rust like this. I'm really worried about how strong the axle housing structure is and if it could possible break in half while driving vehicle.
My 4runner has 72000 miles on it, and i just realized therear differential housing has rusted through. The metal is so thin that the fluid is leaking out through the pours of the metal. I took it to the dealer and they said it would cost 3000$+ to replace the entire rear end. There is no other rust under the vehicle except for the pumpkin housing. After looking around on the internet i found this is a common problem, of the housing not only being too thin of metal for the application, but low quality steel that's prone to corrosion.
Rear differential covered rusting through.
I am the original owner of a 2002 toyota 4runner-sr5, sport edition with 74,600k miles.in november 2009, i experienced the same problem that's being reported by other toyota owners whose vehicles are being recalled. The accelerator pedal stuck in a partially depressed position on its own and quite suddenly.this occurrence only happened once.the engine was racing at a very high rpm and my rear tires were squealing loud enough to draw attention from passersby. Luckily for me i was slowly pulling into a parking slot.my reaction to this situation was to put the gear in neutral and applied the brakes. My main concern is if the ongoing investigation by the nhtsa and toyota will include a look-back at earlier models for these known problems?and, if so, what is the manufacturer's recommendation to owners' with earlier models?
Rear differential rusted through
I purchased the 2002 4runner in 2014. At that time, the 4runner only had 79,000 miles and had been cared for meticulously. I have taken the car in for routine service over the past 5 years. Upon taking the 4runner in due to a vibration and check of the differential, the mechanic called me in to look at the frame while it was up on the lift. Below in the attached photos, there is extensive rusting of the rear differential, axle and frame. The vehicle was stationary and the issue was found during routine maintenance. The rusted frame and differential have rendered this vehicle practically valueless and unsafe.
Vehicle frame, front & rear bumpers and undercarriage have excessive / unsafe rust corrosion.
The frame is rusting almost in two. Looks like it could break any time. Rear axel is also very rusted with pieces falling off.
2002 4runner sr5 4wd, 141k miles, completely rusted through rear differential, both rear axle seals busted out, differential housing has several pin hole leaks and is thinned out, the only fix is a completely new rear end, which is very costly, i am the 2nd owner, i've owned a 99 4runner that had these same rear differential rust issues, the rust is ridiculous and has deteriorated the whole undercarriage and my 4runner is garage kept and i wash it all the time. I can't believe toyota has not been held accountable for the rusting out of rear differentials and rear axle issues.
Rear differential has rusted through, the whole thing has to be replaced because there is no separate coverthe repair cost may be high.
I took my vehicle in for a routine oil change recently and the technician said that i have some major rust issues on my rear axle and drivetrain. He should me when it was on the lift. He explained to me that the bolt and clip than holds the brake line down on the rear differential had rusted and broken off of the differential cover. The rear differential is now leaking gear oil. The technician advised me that it is too risky to attempt to repair as it may cause the entire differential to be damaged and the whole rear axle would need to be replaced. The technician also said that it is a risk to drive the vehicle and is possibly unsafe to keep driving. He stated that it is unknown how much longer i would be able to drive it until the rear axle ceases.
2002 toyota 4 runner.consumer writes in regards to vehicle gas pedal malfunction.the consumer stated after stopping at a stop sign, he attempted to move forward, but the vehicle would not move.after several trips to the dealer, the problem was fixed. However, the consumer did state what the problem was.
4 wheel drive would not work.vcs lites and check engine lites on.car engine filled with black smoke and was towed to repair shop.details:drove on freeway and lost traction and than on shoulder with above problem.differential repaired.two days later lites on again and oil leak.
Frame and rear differential rusting out.
After noticing a strong gear oil odor and seeing the actual gear oil on the back the of the vehicle i was alarmed to find out that the rear axle housing had rust perforating the rear of the housing.once the housing was checked by a certified mechanic and turned away due to fear of destroying the housing, i removed the vehicle from the road.
"takata recall"frame rusted out from the inside out. Looking at on frame it was at least 1.5 inches of dirt and small rock from maine roads and than when rained it was just mud the bad spot is on the passenger side d by torsion bar no way to drain. Also rear end differential gear cover rusted out on other vehicles you replaced just the cover on the 4runner i was told to replace the rear end price just for the rear end was $2500 than labor.

Rear axle assembly rot!now leaking on rear non replaceable yoke cover. 1800-2000 dollar fix. To make things worse axle assembly has no tags!!!!told by dealer door tags are often wrong so ordering recycled (if you can find one in better shape) is a gamble!!!!has been a dependable truck other wise but now itseems as though they are profiting from there design flaws.
When the check engine light is illuminated, the traction control and anti lock brake features are automatically disabled.
Check engine light came in, it was diagnosed as a 770 shift solenoid-e and i was told by two different experts that my transmission would need to be replaced.the toyota 4-runner was purchased in january 2008 from folsom lake toyota with 89,000 miles and currently has 95,500 miles on it.the estimate for repair was $2,300.00.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle began to lose power abnormally accompanied by the illumination of the check engine warning light. The contact later discovered that the aluminum radiator and the bolt that connected the coolant and transmission fluid transfer was faulty causing the two fluids to combine abnormally. The contact stated spoke with several mechanics that advised him of that the two fluids were combining. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage was unavailable.
2002 toyota 4 runner rusted out rear axle housing.rear axle housing leaks oil due to rust erosion on the rear axle cover.
The rear differential housing has rusted through causing its oil to leak out.
I have a 2002 toyota 4 runner with rust out of the rear differential housing. I took the vehicle in for repairs only to discover that metal was quite rusted at the rear housing and instead of a simple part replacement, the whole assembly has to be replaced, a costly repair. I found other owners with similar stories online. Is this a defective part? i had temporary repair with grinding, welding and epoxy which for the time being has corrected the leak but eventually it will reappear.
I was at a full stop, behind a line of cars, at a red light, on a city street. A jeep liberty suv rear-ended me at approximately 30 mph, pushing me into the car in front of me, and totaling my vehicle. My shoulder belt did not lock in place, causing me to hit, and crack, the windshield, with the left frontal aspect of my skull, resulting in a concussion. The driver of the vehicle that ran into me, was taken by ambulance to the hospital. While my car was at the collision repair center, before it was taken to salvage, i went to gather my belongings that were inside my 4runner. At the recommendation of my local toyota dealer service manager, i repeatedly tested both the driver, and front passenger shoulder belts, by abruptly and rapidly pulling on them. The driver side belt only locked in place once, during approximately 10 trials. The passenger shoulder belt locked in place every time.
Driver's seat left front mounting bolt attachment has failed.problem was first noticed on 15 march 2016.vehicle was stationary.as i was shifting around to get seated i noticed a grinding sound coming from beneath the driver's seat.eventually i observed the left front mount lifting slightly off the floor.later, investigating further (removing the plastic covering) i was able to remove the mounting bolt'there is nothing for the bolt to attach to that i can see.whatever held the bolt originally has broken off and is no longer visible or serviceable.this is a critical safety concern for me; all the more so because i was recently diagnosed with three bulging discs in my neck at the san francisco va medical center on 8 march 2016.should i be in a collision and the seat not perform as intended, i could potentially be paralyzed.this is a safety concern.toyota should be required to perform a safety recall for this problem.
Vehicle frame, front & rear bumpers and undercarriage have excessive / unsafe rust corrosion.
When i had my state inspection in january of 2020, the machanic told me the frame of the vehicle will not pass inspection again. It is severely rusted through and in his opinion is unsafe to drive. A few weeks later, i was travelling to my father's residence and the brakes gave out. The technician that repaired my brake line also told me and documented on the bill that the truck is really not safe to drive. I have owned this vehicle for 18 years, and only driven it five winters. I wash the truck numerous times during the winter to remove salt. It is my only vehicle, and i cannot afford a new one. Why wasn't this included in the frame recall from toyota?!? now i'm nervous about my safety and those on the roadways.
Skidding when pumping brakes lightly on gravel (only going 15 mph)
I have a 2002 toyota 4runner with a severely rusted frame. My vehicle has less than 70k original miles on it, no body rust, but an extremely rusted undercarriage and frame. I feel it is unsafe to continually drive with this problem, as it will only get worse and could affect other components such as steering, suspension, brakes, etc.seeing as how toyota has already had a class action lawsuit against their trucks of the same year for unsafe rusted frames, i feel my 4runner should be included in the frame replacement recall.
When the check engine light is illuminated, the traction control and anti lock brake features are automatically disabled.
Traction control system malfunctions intermittently while driving around curves.several times while driving approximately 30-40 miles per hour on a mountain road, the anti skid light illuminates without warning on a dry paved road with a subsequent sudden pull to the right and "grinding" noise.this has happened multiple times without warning.the toyota dealer can not help, since he can not replicate the problem.the latest occurrence pulled the vehicle across the center line into the oncoming traffic lane. (had there been oncoming traffic this would have been a serious accident)
Vsc, trac off, abs and brake lights came on while driving. High pitched buzzer/alarm started and remained constant. Brakes became very hard to depress and i lost most braking power.
The frame of this 4runner has been experiencing excessive rust since the time i got it used from a dealer.once their undercoating wore off, my mechanic replaced rusted up brake lines back about 9 years ago.he said it was because the frame was very rusty and they did a new rust treatment.for the past few years i have been battling issues related to the frame.a plate was put in to strengthen an area.it only has 164k on it, i rebuilt the transmission at 125k, and the body is in good shape.just that the rust is spreading everywhere underneath.we tried to get it addressed in the previous toyota frame recall but it was not for this age for whatever reason. Every repair has been more difficult due to rusting bolts, mufflers rusting early, brake lines busting due to rust, the tow hitch rusted through.now there is a gaping hole in the rear side of the frame supporting the cab.after being under the car trying to scrape rust off, and to put some rust restore/protection, i saw the new hole and got fed up.so i see you are now investigating this year 4runner to add to their recall.please...do!something serious could happen while driving it and it will just stay mostly parked until this is resolved.brake failure when my son was driving was already scary enough. Thank you.
Takata recall: i was driving on. Freeeway (5) freeway and ball joints busted off and lost wheel and slid about 60 feet before stoping. Busted break line and bent control joint.
Vibration from braking causing very decreased vehicle control posing very increased accident risk. Toyota four runner 02 limited, recurrence of pulsing brake pedal and very high vehicle vibration when braking. This occurs after short or long mountain descents at normal / posted highway speeds under normal passenger loads (not hauling), clear dry conditions. This is the second time this low mileage vehicle has experience this issue. First time, the front rotors were replaced at the dealer by the previous owners expense under 60k miles. The vehicle is driven at most 7k miles a year. The problem has returned over and over and poses a serious hazard to occupants and other highway travelers. Searching the web, there are numerous complaints of warped rotors which toyota dealers are saying is driver error / normal use. I have not driven this vehicle much and not hard. My use would qualify as normal highway travel. The vehicle was purchased by me in 2008 and i have replaced rotors every year. I have purchased the slotted rotors with ceramic as well as semi metallic with no benefit . Certainly the expense of again replacing rotors is concerning, but really, the amount of vibration and decreased control causes me to be very concerned for my, and others, safety. Even if the rotors are replaced, it seems very likely that the vibration and loss of control will return in a few thousand miles of normal use. I would like toyota to admit their vehicles have faulty assembly which causes excessive wear on pads and rotors. I now just took it in again, and this will be the 4th set of rotors, pads and rear drums!

The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 60 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and all the service lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had to apply more pressure to stop the vehicle. The contact pulled over and turned the vehicle off. The failure continued after the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the abs needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 258,000.
Reading about the problem with the braking systems of the toyota prius, i learned that the braking system might not work when the vehicle hits a pothole, uneven pavement, or bump. I've had the same problem in my '02 4runner. If the brakes are applied and the vehicle hits a bump, the brakes feel as if they are not working, (brake pedal goes straight to the floor w/no pressure). This issue goes away if you release the brake pedal and reapply pressure to the brake, (pump). I always thought this was "normal" until i read about the prius issues with it's braking system. The issues with the prius sound too similar to dismiss the issue as just a problem with the car's electric engine.
Without any warning the vehicle lost all braking power. The brake pedal would not go down and at that moment the warning lights came on but that was after the vehicle had already lost it's brakes. The car was towed to headquater toyota and they determined that the "hydraulic brakes power booster assembly" had failed. It was replaced at a cost of $3127.00.
When turning to either side the vsc light comes on and the abs system activates. Tis is in dry road on the highway.
2002 toyota 4 runner.brake rotors are wearing unevenly, causing shaking when slowing down.dealer said the brake pads haven't even been used 50%.
Less than 70,000 miles on my vehicle, but recently took my car in for an alignment because my vehicle slowly drifts to the right, and sometimes the steering wheel shakes when driving between 50-60 miles. I was told by 2 different body shops (1 of which was toyota) that my entire power steering would need to be replaced and is currently leaking. I was advised this could be potentially dangerous if my power steering were to stop working while i was driving at fast speeds on the freeway. I received a full-point inspection when my mileage was at the 50,000 marker but this was not an issue at that time.
I was doing an oil change and noticed that the frame was rusted very badly . I think that there should be a recall on this model 3rd gen 4runner (1999-2002)this is the same frame as the truck that was recalled ,so this should be included .if this frame breaks it will hurt or kill some one .
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the entire rear end of the frame completely rusted. In addition, the rack and pinion was faulty and replaced by an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failrue mileage was 120,000.
Vehicle bucked and swayed as rear frame separated at the joint on driver side was unaware of issue before this tried to find sway bar issue it was spotted at a distance by coworker.

Frame and rear differential rusting out.
I was having service work done at toyota on my 2002 toyota 4runner and the service manager brought to my attention the vehicle's frame was rusting through, near the muffler and the frame would eventually fail. He said was a known defect but no recall had been issued. He also stated that the toyota tacoma had the same problem and a recall had been issued for the tacoma. The rust holes in the frame pose a serious safety issue. The service manager said he had seen other 4runners with the same issue and even suggested to those owners that their vehicle was not safe to drive.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while receiving routine maintenance repair on the vehicle, the independent mechanic informed the contact that the subframe was rusted. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 136,000.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact noticed that the main frame was rusting on the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted about the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 209,000.
Frame rusted under 4 runner and on bumper told by person working on sway bar links. Stated excessive rust on frame and rear axle.
The frame on my 4runner is completely rusting.had to get it spot welded to pass inspection.this is a common problem on 3rd generation 4runners.please help.
Frame is rusted through on right side from middle of the frame to just over the rear axel. There are large holes and rusted slots that are over 10 inches long damage starts before the rear suspenshion support and continues to the other side and the side where the rust has caused holes and long slots the whole frame can be squeezed easily with your hand.
Excessive rust on frame.rusting from the inside out, on passenger side near muffler, by rear suspension mounts.rusted all the way through on the inside of the frame.likely rusted in other parts that are not visible.
Excessive rust on frame since 2008. Toyota refused to address after filing formal complaint. I believe like trucks of same year that had frames replaced, 4 runners should be included
There is excessive rust on the frame rails which support the body of the vehicle thus weakening the critical supportive components.this creates a possible dangerous situation which may go unnoticed until failure occurs.this has been a common problem with other toyota vehicles and should be addressed for the 4runners.
I have owned my 2002 4runner since i bought it new in 2002. Around 8,500 miles a year, and somehow my frame is completely rusted out. This is not normal, and now it won't pass inspection and is unsafe to drive. Toyota bought the frames from a third party in japan which did not coat these frames properly. We undercoated the car for 5 years after buying it, and yet rust started showing up around 2009. We have taken care of the car, everything except the frame is perfect and clean. Toyota is knowingly letting 3rd generation 4runners drivers drive their cars even when they're unsafe. They need to institute a buyback or frame replacement program. We don't know what to do now, because we can't drive or sell the vehicle, yet everything runs perfectly.
I have a 2002 toyota 4runner.it's under my wife's name but i am the one that's in charge of automotive issues.the bumpers have been hanging down on the front and rear.as i drive around the city, i've started to notice majority of the 4runners in the same model having the same issue.this makes me think that there is a defect.i believe it's a safety defect especially since bumpers are not just for cosmetic reasons, its highly effective in a crash situation.it's a safety issue because it is also linked to the airbag sensors and i am afraid that it may go off at any time.i've gone on forums and found that others talk about this also.they also talk about rusting around the bumper area which is something i have on my 4runner also.i hope your department looks into this matter thoroughly and get back to me about it.
Takata recall. I have a rusty frame that needs to be addressed for safety reasons i was driving on the highway at 55 mph frame cracked and i almost died because of it toyotas have poor frame that should be recalled
Rust/rot damage to passenger side frame. Extends from middle cross member to rear cross member. Also significant rust damage to rear shock mounts. Failed inspection as a result. The rest of the car is in excellent condition and well maintained. Safety issue for my family.
Frame deterioration.
My 2002 toyota 4 runner failed mass state inspection due to emergency brake not engaging. I immediately brought the vehicle to a local auto shop for repair. I was then notified by the shop that the entire frame was completely rotted & unsafe to drive. They refused to do any repair to the e-brake until the frame was repaired. I'm devastated that my well cared for vehicle , with only 130,000 miles is now unsafe to drive due to frame rot.
Frame cracked/rusteddealership reported that the frame (right rear) was cracked.... Car is unsafe to drive.
Vehicle was stationary. While replacing exhaust system components. Found what appeared to be minor rust on the passenger (right) side rear suspension mount. Further investigation uncovered a larger area of rust along the 3 welds on the inner frame rail. Cut / ground the metal back to good metal and am in the process of patching for my yearly maine vehicle inspection. Either toyota hasbuilt an inferior frame or the newer chemicals being used to keep the roads clear in the winter to be the cause of this rust which could cause the rear suspension to fail at this point in the frame and cause a accident.
My frame is suffering from premature and excessive rusting, as is commonly reported among other early to mid 2000's 4runner owners.the most severe area is the radiator supports.i am filing this complaint so it is registered among the many complaints received about this issue.i'd be happy to provide documentation if needed, but i'm pretty sure there have already been a lot of reports of this since there's now an investigation into the issue.
Frame rusted through. There is a hole in frame because of rust.
Vehicle frame, front & rear bumpers and undercarriage have excessive / unsafe rust corrosion.
My 2002 4runner's frame is rusted through in many places. This is very unsafe and toyota should fix this problem. They have yet to recall the 4runners but, have recalled the tacoma and sequoia. I do not have the money to do this repair. I am buried in debt from a heart transplant and this is just unacceptable. I think people will die from this problem. Please respond so i have some information please. Thanks, [xxx] columbus, ohioinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Rusted through frame on the rear passenger side where axle support connects to frame. Measures approx 2.5 feet. Rear end feels loose when navigating turns.
My 2002 toyota 4runner has a couple quarter sized rust hole on the rear right side of the frame. Located on the inside next to the exhaust muffler. The entire rest of the frame is in very good condition, it's weird to me that just this particular spot is completely rusted through, this is a huge safety hazard and i know toyota should step up and do something about this.i read online most people have this same problem in the same exact spot. Seems like a defect in the frame. I'm hoping to have toyota cover this incident. Thanks for reading. Brandon
Excessive rust on the frame. Have heard of other toyotas from the same time that were recalled but not the 4runner even though it suffers the same issues.
When taken to the local automotive shop they found the frame has rotted out in many parts of the frame. Cab frame mounts are also rotted. It will not pass inspection. The frame is ready to snap offf. Thank the lord the shop found this being three of my four kids ride in it everyday to school.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact became aware that the subframe underneath the vehicle was severely rusted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. The repair was still pending. Toyota of lincoln park (1561 n fremont st, chicago, il 60642) was contacted by phone and informed of the failure. The contact was informed that the dealer was unable to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The vin was not available.
Frame is perforated by rust where the rear control arm mount meets the frame rail.
Vehicle has 188,400 miles, runs flawlessly.bought 2005, 45k miles, toyota dealer certified used suv. Rotted thru rear transfer case 3 yrs ago, replaced from a wreck. Severe progressive entire frame rust/rot noted in yearly pa inspections, now cant pass inspection & pillars almost rotted thru..unsafe to drive. Extremely disappointed cant pull trailer sailboat & m'cycles, now sits in driveway useless.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. While the vehicle was being serviced, the technician found severe corrosion on the passenger side. The contact stated that the frame would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
I have already filed a safety complaint regarding my sudden acceleration accident approximately 4 years ago.i noticed that toyota has issued a recall for this problem for toyota 4runners going back to 2003.my vehicle is a 2002.basically, i'm writing to urge nhtsa to asktoyota what is different about the gas pedal assembly from 2003 to 2002 because there is no doubt there was a major malfunction with my car and if the assemble & parts manufactures is the same from 03 to 02 then the recall should be extended.also, the other main reason i'm writing you is so that there is a record of me requesting my vehicle be included in the recall so that way if something happens to me again we will have a record of it.
I visited a toyota dealership for routine maintenance (oil change) and inspection of 4 wheel drive system.after the vehicle was raised on the lift, the service advisor asked me to join him and the shop mechanic in the service bay where i was shown that the frame / chassis of the vehicle has rusted the point where in their opinion it was no longer safe to operate.after close inspection, i had agreed with their assessment.an online search for a recall notice was performed, but none was found.otherwise, this vehicle is in meticulous condition with no body damage or rust or any mechanical problems.
Right frame rail is very rusted to the point of non repair.unable to repair suspension due to unable to remove bolts that hold suspension to frame.
I have seen classi. Cars from the 60s with frames in better shape than my 4runner. The rear control arms brackets are close to detaching from the frame.rust is eating the back half of my frame. The frame rails are completely rusted through and will soon need replacing.there are numerous bolts and hardware that can no longer be used due to rust.the fill plug on the rear differential has rusted away as well.the quality of this steel is absolutely horrible.toyota should be ashamed of a vehicle that has problems like this.i have never seen rust this bad on a frame before.
2002 toyota 4 runner sr5, 98,000 miles. Always dealer serviced.this will be my last state nys inspection as i will be unable to have the truck inspected in 2015 due to body frame rot, need to incur costs to replace body frame. Truck is in excellent condition with the exception of frame rot. Have also replaced the bumper, the gas tank shield and have been told front oil pan shield needs replacing as dealer can not perform oil change, due to this problem.i have contacted toyota waiting for a reply.
I have a 2002 toyota sr5 4runner with extreme frame rot frame the inside out. Expertsagree that i have only a year or two left with this frame. I have had repairs to pass inspection but this is only a band aid. I understand that i live in a state where road salt is used, but to have the frame rot from the inside out shows a design flaw or inferior steel used fro the frame, possibly inadequate corrosion protection. Just a bad scenario not which way you put it. Rot from the inside out is just unacceptable.
Frame rust.the dealership determined the "frame is rotted-safety issue-will not pass inspection".this 4runner has only been exposed to areas of mild south east pennsylvania winters and the undercarriage was washed regularly after every snow and road-salting event.4runner is trash afteronly 12 winters.4runner was in storage for 04/05 winter and there was no snow in 15/16.
2002 toyota 4runner, original owner with only 110,900 original miles on it!vehicle has severe rust/rot damage to passenger and driver side frame. Extends from middle cross member to rear cross member. The rest of the car is in excellent condition and well maintained. Safety issue for my family.repair will be necessary soon, as i'm starting to not feel safe driving long distances or at highway speeds (70+ mph). Thank you!
Frame rusted out, similar to tacoma pick up trucks recall. Additionally climate control heating, cooling, fan defective, power antenna in-operable.
Large amount of rust on the underbody, gas tank shield and front brakes. Just purchased this vehicle used with 39k miles and have been finding lost of corrosion. Tried to use rust remover and neutralizer and wire brush. Hope i can get it under control before the entire thing falls apart.
Frame is badly rusted out. Vehicle only has 80,000 miles
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frameand undercarriage was severely corroded. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 110,500.
Frame is completly rusted out.
Check engine light comes on so i take my 2002 4 runner toget it checked. I noticed it sounds like it might be a exhaust problem. Then i get the bad news . The frame experience excessive corrosion. My understanding is that there was some kind of recall on this matter a few years ago but i never received a notice .i purchased it used in 2003 so maybe the notice went to the first owner. I have been living at the same address since i owned it.
We purchased a 4runner for our 18 year old daughter to drive thinking it would be safe, esp in mn.she was driving home from college (130 miles) and noticed it had a bad vibration, especially over 40 mph.it was very difficult to drive.we were out of town and when we got back, brought it to the shop, only to be told the frame was responded beyond repair (see photos).not only does that scare me for my daughter, but she has been driving it a few years and had friends and other family members in the vehicle.the vehicle has relatively low miles for it's age and based on toyotas reputation of longevity, we never expected this sort of issue.we're thankful she wasn't hurt, but are concerned about others driving a vehicle and not knowing it could literally break in half while driving down the road!
Thank you.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. While the vehicle was undergoing routine service at an independent mechanic shop, the technician noticed that the frame was corroded through and caused the tailpipe to detach. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 168,000. ..
This is yet another costumer of the 4runner 3rd generation complaining about the frame rusting out. There needs to be responsability for the bad frames on this year 4runner. My frame has holes in the rear control arm attachment area and more rust all throughout entire frame. I'm doing all i can to keep my frame from getting any more rust on it and keeping it safe to be on the road. I strongly believe toyota should also have a frame recall for the 4runner like it did for the tundra tacoma and sequoia frames.
I recently had my vehicle in for service and to get new tires.while on the lift, the mechanic pointed out to me that the frame on the passenger's side is beginning to rust through.this is an obvious potential safety issue and as i have researched possible repairs, it appears that this is a very common problem for this year and model.this should be recalled.
At a stop light, went to drive heard load pop clank. Vehicle started shaking and driving funny. Looked under car and my control arm ( that stabilizes my axel ) mount rusted off. My entire under carriage is rusted out. The control arm shifted
Extensive rust thru on drivers side of frame, rear suspension link rusted to the point where complete failure in coming soon. Last two feet of frame completely gone. Doubt it will pass another safety inspection without significant repair.rear differential rusted to the point gear oil leaks.this is common on all 4 runners and should be recalled just like the tacomas.
My 2002 toyota 4runner has excessive rust on the frame to the point that it has been deemed by my local toyota dealership as "unsafe to drive." it only has 180,000 miles on it, the rust should not be this extensive.
Frame rust on the inside portion for the frame. 33" hole rusted through completely on passenger side. Rust continues about 80% of the way through the rear lower control arm mount. Driver's side has a similar amount of severe rust that has weakened the structural integrity of the frame to the point where it is no longer safe to drive. Should the co troll arm mount finish rusting through, the axle will no longer be attached to the frame on that side. There is noticble flex and sound associated with the frame rot. It is only a matter of time before the control arm mount disconnects completely, or the frame buckles.
Fame deteriorating prematurely, skid plate that protects fuel tank showed signs of rust. After inspecting found rotting frominside out.when replacing in may of 2014,found that strap that holds fuel tank rusted completely away, two bolts from the rusted skid plate only thing holding fuel tank in place.same conditions exist over entire frame, rust falls off in sheets when frame is tapped on with hammer.broughtmy concerns to dealership in jan.of 2015 of rust issue, they informed me nothing would be done.
Rear axel is rusted off the frame, and rotting, mechanic says it's unsafe to drive
Frame has excessive rust and has holes in parts of it.the rest of the body and interior are in great condition. Engine runs well and there are otherwise no major mechanical issues. Upon having a minor repair done, inspection showed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive with the frame in that condition as it is about to crack in half. This seems to be prematurely failing compared to the rest of the vehicle.
I have a 2002 4 runner and put almost $2,800.00 in it last year for a new rear end, new tires, because i felt it still had a tremendous amount of life left in it, only to find out that the frame has 2 holes in it from excessive rust. The dealership i took it to informed me that they were currently in the process of replacing frames for 2003 - 2009 models.when i asked about the 2002 models, they stated that toyota does not assume responsibility for the 4 runners.my question is "how do i find out if the 2002 frames were manufactured with the same materials that the 2003 models were made of?" i really wanted to hand this car down to my daughter. She needs a car and with the current situation of the frame, there is no way i can let her drive this in its current condition.please help!!!
Frame is showing excessive rust all over,a known problems with 4runners and toyota trucks. Auto repair shop says vehicle probably has only 1 year of life left before unsafe and undrivable. Car has only 100000 miles on it, 1998 4runner we had made it to 250000 miles- unacceptable.
Leaving work friday of labor day weekend 2018 i noticed the smell of gas.my co-worker also looked, and observed a puddle of gasoline under the car. Since the dealer was close, i took the risk to drive it the dealer. The dealer is heritage toyota in baltimore maryland. The car has only 91000 miles on it.the entire bottom of the car is rusted out. This is what caused the fuel leak. The frame is also rusted out to the point of not being safe anymore. My complaints are these:1. The underside of the car completely rusted out. 2. Other toyota trucks of the same year are having their frames replaced by toyota.3. My toyota was serviced with me letting the dealer do "anything it needs". I estimate spending about $15,000 at this dealer. Never once was i told there was a rust problem. With mounting repaired costs, i took it to another mechanic who immediately recommended that i take the car to the dealer for assessment. Never did the toyota dealer warn me about the rust.4. Toyota was completely uninterested in helping. I did file a complaint #1808271490
The frame is rusted out and is making the vehicle unsafe to be on the road. This is a known problem with this frame, it's already been recalled on the toyota tacoma and it's the same identical frame. It should have been recalled years ago. Just making a normal turn on a bend in the road makes it difficult to keep the vehicle under control.
The frame of the vehicle is rotting out with rust. The 4runner has never been in snow and has been taken well care of and the frame is still eroding away with rust at an unnatural rate. This issue must be addressed for the sake of so many unaware owners!
Vehicle frame has corroded, fractured especially on passenger rear of vehicle. Many holes along frame. Was hearing loud thunking in rear of vehicle took it in for a visual inspection and found the issue.
Very excessive rusting and corrosion on the frame near where the leading arm attaches on the passenger side. Hole has developed very quickly, only in the span of a couple years. When going around left corner >15mph, a clunking noise can be heard from the problem area. Very occasionally a similar noise can be heard when going through right turns. Vehicle has spent most of its life in southern minnesota, although some time has been spent in south florida. Repair will be necessary soon, as i'm starting to not feel safe driving long distances or at highway speeds (70+ mph). Thank you, have a nice day.
Hello. I purchased a 2002 toyota 4runner limited edition last fall in pennsylvania. The car had passed the pennsylvania state inspection withpassed validated inspection tags in the front window.i took the car to my mechanic, welder and beechmont toyota (cincinnati oh) and the consensus is the car needs the car frame replaced. The car frame has rust holes and is rusted along with a rusted undercarriage.the integrity of the car is compromised, because the car frame has rusted holes in it, criteria that should not have passed pa state inspection. It does not have a safe car frame. I was sold a vehicle that passed pa state inspection and the car had holes in the rusted car frame.the sales guy who sold me the car, said that the car had passed state inspection in which the sticker in the windshield shows. I researched the state inspection criteria and i think it is 5a and 5iii that reference checking the car frame. Pendot did not take any responsibility for their failure of approving the state inspection. I asked for my money back ($6,200) from the car salesman plus i had to pay about $500 ohio tax and was told that it had passed pennsylvania state inspection and they would not refund my money.this car has a rusted damaged frame with holes and needs to be off the road as it's dangerous. I am asking for my money back, and i'll return the vehicle as it should not have passed pennsylvania state inspection.thank you.
After having my 4 runner in for routine maintenance, my mechanic informed me that my frame was in bad condition and rusting through. Doubtful it has a year left and he advised me to junk it as fast as i can. 180;000 miles - so much for toyotaā€™s lasting a long time.
I was doing an oil change and noticed that the frame was rusted very badly . I think that there should be a recall on this model 3rd gen 4runner (1999-2002)this is the same frame as the truck that was recalled ,so this should be included .if this frame breaks it will hurt or kill some one .

The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4 runner. While driving approximately 45 mph, the contact lost control of the vehicle. The contact had to apply force to the brake pedal in order for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the trailing arm was corroded and that the entire frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 119,000. The vin was unavailable.
My 2002 toyota 4 runner that is in excellent body and running condition was in for a routine service and the dealer told us the frame had a hole in it and it was unsafe to drive, it was inspected by two representatives of toyota who said that it is not a warranty issue and there are no "programs' and they would do nothing about it even thou there is a history of frame failures with toyota's.
The frame is rusting almost in two. Looks like it could break any time. Rear axel is also very rusted with pieces falling off.
My vehicle is a 2002 toyota 4runner se5 with 112,080 miles. I have severe frame rust on this vehicle. Holes though frame on right side and frame to rear axle is completely broken to right side of attachment atdifferential axle.toyota has recalled the u.s version of the tacoma truck which is the same frame, etc. As the 4runner but not the 4runner which is made in japan with the same issues. This vehicle is completely unsafe and truth be known undriveable and needs to be addressed immediately. Toyota 4runner forum is full of these 3rd generation 4runners with the same issue. Toyota needs to step up and add the 3rd generation 4 runner to be included in the recall on the tacoma, tundra and sequoia vehicles.
Frame rusted through at lower control arm area.toyota has had recalls for other models for rusted frames but not acknowledging 4runner frame issues that are dangerous.
Rear axel is rusted off the frame, and rotting, mechanic says it's unsafe to drive
The rear body mount bushings are completely rusted away and do not hold the frame to the body due to excessive frame body rust thru out the vehicle'sframe. Makes noise when turning or going over bumps
After buying this vehicle i was underneath vehicle to repair a axle seal leaking and found extensive frame rust on passenger rear of frame.by extensive i mean the frame was rusted completely through!i have lived in ohio all of my life and have never seen a vehicle with this mileage and of this year have such severe frame rust!after further inspection i noticed rear end housing was also severely rusted. The rust on the frame is severely perforated at point where trailing arm for the rear end attaches to the frame! i was not aware of this issue before buying vehicle but after some research have found that this is definitely a manufacturer defect of some sort!these vehicles are not safe to drive with these frames in this condition and toyota is aware of this!
Right frame rail is very rusted to the point of non repair.unable to repair suspension due to unable to remove bolts that hold suspension to frame.
I found frame rust with perforation on my 02 toyota 4runner
This is yet another costumer of the 4runner 3rd generation complaining about the frame rusting out. There needs to be responsability for the bad frames on this year 4runner. My frame has holes in the rear control arm attachment area and more rust all throughout entire frame. I'm doing all i can to keep my frame from getting any more rust on it and keeping it safe to be on the road. I strongly believe toyota should also have a frame recall for the 4runner like it did for the tundra tacoma and sequoia frames.
Frame and some suspension parts are very rusted, frame has holes and is becoming unsafe to drive.vehicle is only 13 years old, only 100100 miles.passenger side front suspension pop's when stressed in cornering.when at idle, you can hear the vibration from rust chunks in the frame.all heat shields rusted.skid plates on front and fuel tank so rusted must remove.now nothing is protecting the fuel tank.
Rust perforation in right side rear frame rail across from fuel tank inboard side.i understand toyota has already recalled the tacoma (same year) for the same issues however has not recalled the 4runner.car will not pass inspection nor can dealer repair.
Rear swaybar rusted from frame causing 4runner to wobble excessivly almost causing me to wreck. That side of frame is completely rusted away.
Frame is rusted. Deemed unsafe to drive
I have a 2002 toyota 4 runner that was taken in for yearly state inspection and the technician informed that the frame is rotted through.he stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and a rejection sticker has been placed on the vehicle.not sure what to do now.the vehicle still looks and runs very well, but unable to drive.
On my 2002 toyota 4 runner the bracket welded to the frame for rear trailing arm on drivers side rusted off causing the vehicle to sway and act very strange.lots of other places rusted bad on frame also!
Takata recall: i was driving on. Freeeway (5) freeway and ball joints busted off and lost wheel and slid about 60 feet before stoping. Busted break line and bent control joint.
Frame is rusting out
Vehicle was stationary.
Vehicle bucked and swayed as rear frame separated at the joint on driver side was unaware of issue before this tried to find sway bar issue it was spotted at a distance by coworker.
The frame on the 2002 4-runner has completely corroded and caused the toyota dealership to deem thevehicle unsafe for driving. Even though this a recognized design failure, toyota refuses to cover the cost of replacement. Toyota has recalled tundra models for this defect, but refuses to acknowledge the 4-runner design flaw since it was manufactured completely at their hino japan plant.
The vehicle is in impeccable condition. The frame is rusted through in the area of the passenger side above the trailing arms and the middle section of the rail. I bought the vehicle in 2006 and have babied the vehicle.
Frame rusted out, similar to tacoma pick up trucks recall. Additionally climate control heating, cooling, fan defective, power antenna in-operable.
The frame is rusting almost in two. Looks like it could break any time. Rear axel is also very rusted with pieces falling off.

Takata recall. I have a rusty frame that needs to be addressed for safety reasons i was driving on the highway at 55 mph frame cracked and i almost died because of it toyotas have poor frame that should be recalled

2002 4runner was unstable after purchase, consumer had tires replaced and an alignment. Front and rear tires blew out. Consumer received letter of front suspension ball joints after accident occurred.
I received a safety recall notice from toyota concerning a defect with the front suspension lower ball joint in 2002 toyota 4runners (ref nhtsa campaign id number : 05v225000).i contacted toyota on 9 may 2006 to begin the process to replace the defective parts. My situation is unique.i'm in the military and currently stationed in seoul, south korea.there are no toyota dealerships in south korea, however, lexus (owned by the same parent company) is located in seoul.it took the toyota customer service folks til aug to notify me that my issue had been forwarded to toyota hq in japan for resolution.in september i followed up since no one had contacted me about the situation.i was told by toyota that toyota hq had up to 4 months to work the issue.toyota would also not provide the contact information for the office in japan handling the issue and also would not provide the contact information for the vendor that would accomplish the recall work.this is unacceptable as i'm driving my wife and one year old child in this vehicle with an identified defect in the front suspension.any assistance you can provide to have toyota quickly resolve this matter would be greatly appreciated.
On april 17th at 5:45 am while driving on i-465, i felt a loss of steering in the wheel. I did nothing to the wheel, as one would normally do when driving on ice. I was driving in the middle lane, the vehicle crashed into the highway divider and then careened off the road. A carmel police officer came to the scene and an accident report was entered.front ball joint(s) failed and front wheel folded under vehicle; this resulted in the loss of steering and crash on interstate highway. The vehicle hit the concrete highway divider and then bounced across the interstate and off the road.when the vehicle was examined at the repair facility it was suggested that the cause of the accident was the failure of the ball joint. It appears that the lower ball joint(s) were not replaced.the old assembly(s) do not appear to have been touched. There is a consistent pattern of rust on the assembly(s) and nuts that have not been disturbed. I spoke with a toyota representative and was told that my vehicle id was a part of the recall ssc 50j or nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000.i was also told that the work had been completed at obrien toyota on september 9th 2005.the ssc 50j completion label was not applied to the vehicle.i called the dealership the first part of may and spoke with the service manager, dan johnson, who assured me that the part had been replaced on both front suspensions. He stated that this service was performed by joe, who was one of his best mechanics.my complaint is either that the recalled part was not replaced or that the replacement part does not work.
2002 toyota 4runner recall- lower ball joint customer wants to know if techs are required to be certified mechanics and have certification from toyota on the diagnosis and repair of toyota vehicles**cc
Vehicle is not handling right; body feels very loose and unstable going over bumps in the road.took it to a toyota repair shop who indicated that front, right lower ball joint was loose, worn and needed to be replaced.that ball joint was already replaced by the dealer when purchased in 8/05 as part of the manufacturer's recall. Took vehicle back to the dealer where the work was originally done and after 3 hours they confirmed that the ball joint did need replacing. However there is only a 1 year warranty on the replacement and they wanted over $400 to replace it.so you're telling me that i get over 4 years on an allegedly defective ball joint but only 2 years on the supposedly good one?updated 09/28/07.
Dt*:the contact stated the recall work for nhtsa recall # 05v225000, pertaining to the lower ball joint, was unable to be performed on the vehicle within the noted 24 hours.the vehicle was taken to the service dealer who determined the repair would take 2 days.the contact stated that the dealer refused to provide a loaner vehicle during that time.the service manager was consulted, who was unable to address the issue.the manufacturer was consulted, who offered to send out paperwork for an investigation.

Brent brown toyota in oreum utah performed a 60,000 mile check up on our 2002 4-runner, the staff were great and the work accomplished correctly. After driving home over five hours from the dealership to our home, i thought that the4-runner seemed to be riding rough. Upon checking the tirepressure,i found each tire to be over inflated at 70 pounds per tire. I had a local tire shop, "canyon lands tire" confirm the over inflated tires at more than 70 pounds in each tire. Canyon lands tiredid verify that indeed the tire pressure was at 70 pounds and more. This oversight endangered my wife and i. The tires could have run off the rims resulting in injury or loss of life. I have contacted the toyota dealershipwho said they will be calling back.
1) stopped at stop sign with snow on the ground.then accelerate turning onto another road.2) vehicle can accelerate and move a few feet before the trac (traction control) system activates.the power to the engine is then cut off.at this point you are unable to move, stuck in the middle of an intersection.there is a few second delay before you can get any power back to the engine.ultimately, you are left in the middle of the intersection with no power to the wheels waiting to see if another vehicle is going to t-bone you.i have had multiple, very close calls.failure occurs every single time you try to accelerate from a stop and the system senses even a tiny loss of traction.the complete loss of accelerator function and delay until the return of power is very dangerous.3)there is no fix.i was told there is no way to disable the trac system that is supposed to be a safety feature when in reality it is an extremely dangerous system.toyota must think a little wheel spin is more dangerous than completely taking away the driver's ability to control their own vehiclei have driven vehicles that have trac and it does not function like it does on this particular vehicle.the system is severely overly sensitive and overly controlling.
Had the 4runner wv state inspected. Needed to replace the muffler. Noticed the frame cracked on frame rail near muffler location.
Frame is perforated by rust where the rear control arm mount meets the frame rail.
Frame has rusted through to the point of being a danger to drive my vehicle. Frame did not easily appear rusted when i purchased my vehicle 4 years ago. It appears that the frame rusted from the inside out and the coating concealed the damage until it was too late to repair. My vehicle drives perfectly but is not safe due to the frame damage.
Frame was rusted through and truck was not safe to drive
Rust through on the frame.
Frame rust through! with 150.000 miles on it. Structural integrity compromised. Body and drive train still operable.
My 2002 toyota 4runner frame is rotted in front of the rear passanger wheel well measuring about 31' inside next to the muffler and driver side rear body mount it's starting to rust through now the rest is in great shape body wise
The frame has rusted at the passenger side rear control arm mount to the point of not passing inspection.

Right frame rail is very rusted to the point of non repair.unable to repair suspension due to unable to remove bolts that hold suspension to frame.
Excessive rust on the frame. Have heard of other toyotas from the same time that were recalled but not the 4runner even though it suffers the same issues.
The frame is rotting from the inside out
The frame of my 2002 toyota 4runner is complete rusted and is dangerous to be driving.the rust has recently accelerated.i would like to know if toyota will replace the frame and stand by there vehicle.it has been meticulously maintained including the under carriage.photo's can be submitted at your request.
Frame rusted outin therear suspension
The frame on my 4 runner has rusted and broke in half they recalled my 2005 and 1996 tacoma and put a new frame under it and it was not as bad as my 4 runner dont understand
Took vehicle for inspection, was told it needed to be welded.took it took a welding shop, that does this type of work. We were then told by the gentlemen doing the work that it was the frame under the vehicle and didn't feel comfortable.because he has heard of issues with 4runner rusting issues and said it would cost thousands of dollars to fix it. He knew we didn't have the funds to spend that kind of money. We have someone else who saw a photo of it and stated just from the pictures it would be over $2,000 to fix it.we feel that toyota should recall this. Just because it wasn't manufactured in the united states then in japan.not a happycustomer.
Frame rust. Only has 63,000 miles on it and my mechanic recently noticed heavy scaling and rust, also a few holes/rotted sections. Toyota needs a service campaign, or recall these frames, as they did with the tacoma. I called toyota and they said it's our problem when this is a clear common issue. The other common issue on these frames, is at the back shackle, that attaches the control arm to the rear end, rots right off. I fear for my safety that something will fail and cause an accident. It is very disconcerting that with only 63,000 miles my frame is disintegrating quickly.
Frame rusted out, similar to tacoma pick up trucks recall. Additionally climate control heating, cooling, fan defective, power antenna in-operable.
I found frame rust with perforation on my 02 toyota 4runner
Frame has excessive rust and has holes in parts of it.the rest of the body and interior are in great condition. Engine runs well and there are otherwise no major mechanical issues. Upon having a minor repair done, inspection showed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive with the frame in that condition as it is about to crack in half. This seems to be prematurely failing compared to the rest of the vehicle.
The entire frame and other parts of the underbody are rusted. The brakes both front and back were also rusted. I pulled off from the highway and stopped to pickup my dogs. When i tried to leave my brakes were gone. When the car was towed to my mechanic he said both front and rear brake lines were rusted through and had to be replaced. I could have been killed. He also said that the frame is rusted and is dangerous to drive. I am afraid to drive this car.
The contact owns a 2002 toyota 4runner. While traveling at a speed of 5 mph attempting to park, the vehiclesuddenly accelerated, causing thecontact to crash into a nearby vehicle and then into a building.a police report was filed for the incident. The vehicle was towed to a localmechanic where it was repaired for the failure. The manufacturer had not been contacted, the failure mileage was at 160000, the current mileage was 185000.updated 05/07/2010. *ljthe driver of the other vehicle was injured. Updated 09/13/10
Vsc, trac off, abs and brake lights came on while driving. High pitched buzzer/alarm started and remained constant. Brakes became very hard to depress and i lost most braking power.
I own a toyota 4 runner. While driving across country last fall i noticed that the truck would accelerate rapidly when i had cruise control on. The cruise control would kick in as it should have but it would accelerate very rapidly and felt out of control. Once it began the acceleration, it would never stop and level out to the appropriate speed as it should have. It would continue to accelerate. Braking worked in slowing the vehicle down, but it frightened me while i was driving. I do not use the cruise control now as a result of this. I was driving r/t from ca to denver, co and it happened several times during this trip.
-the contactownsa 2002 toyota four runner andthe seal around all four windows peeled off. Took vehiclec to the car dealership, and theyreplaced and reglued the seals back together more than once, but the problem recurred. Thewindows have been repaired on five occasions. This have been going on for the last five years. The dealer informed the contact that there was nothing else they could do, and the windowswere still coming unglued. Each time the vehicle was taken for maintenance to the dealer the contact would ask them to reglue the windows. The failure and current mileage were 72000.
While traveling on a highway at approximately 60 mph, the right rear tire (firestone destination le2 265/70r16; manufactured april 2015; approx. 19,500 miles on the tire) abruptly underwent complete tread separation. (see photo). All four tires were properly inflated per toyota's specifications. Fortunately, the stability control kept the vehicle from crashing. Even though the tire was clearly defective, firestone declined to accept any responsibility and i was forced to pay full price for another tire. I certainly wonder about the other three tires and whether they're similarly defective.
