The contact owned a 2001 toyota 4runner. The driver was traveling 45 mph when she was involved in a crash with another vehicle. Both vehicles were destroyed. The air bags did not deploy. Four passengers were injured. A police report was available. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The contact was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

My fuse for my windows blew, then we found out that my wiring harness in the backseat had burned up. Further inspection revealed that the main wiring harness was also fried. Three different mechanics determined that the cause was a malfunction of the airbag wiring. There was no sign of wear and tear or outside influence. The airbags created the problem, are now compromised and are completely unsafe. I can no longer drive the car and even if repaired, the airbags are now compromised forever rendering the car useless. Toyota denies any responsibility. They claim that the car is too old to be their problem. This is a major safety issue that needs attention so that nobody else has the same experience or worse, is killed due to airbags deploying at will.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4 runner. The contact stated that she was driving 40 mph when she attempted to avoid crashing into a deer and crashed into a ditch. As a result, the vehicle went airborne approximately 40 feet and then crashed into a tree before hitting the ground, rendering the contact unconscious. During the crash, none of the airbags deployed. The contact was the only person injured and a police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed for the air bag failure. The current and failure mileages were 246,000.

The contact owned a 2001 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 45 to 50 mph, another vehicle crashed into the front center of the contact's vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The vehicle was destroyed and towed away by state farm. A police report was filed. The contact was injured and received medical attention. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While driving 35 mph she attempted to brake, but the vehicle suddenly accelerated, went air born, and landed down a ravine.the driver frontal air bag did not deploy. She did not receive any injuries.after careful examination he noticed that the accelerator pedal was trapped by the floor mat. She received police report number 097267. She received a ticket for failure to reduce speed. The vehicle was towed to the body shop. The failure andcurrent mileages were 90,000.

I was driving my truck on a city street in brooklyn, new york ( flatbush ave) when i suddenly smelled smoke followed by fire coming from the hood. I did not hit any bump and was not involved in any accident. By the time the fire department came, the entire front compartment of the truck was on fire.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated and the traction control became disabled. The dealer stated that the programming of the computer needed to be reconfigured. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Less than 20000 miles after i had a remanufactured transmission installed, by toyota, in my 2001 toyota 4runner the vehicle became unresponsive to throttle input. The engine was running but the vehicle would not move in any gear. I put the vehicle in park and let off of the brake and the vehicle began rolling backwards down the hill. I applied the foot brake to keep the car from rolling further and shut off the vehicle. After a few minutes i started the vehicle back up low and behold, the vehicle operated normally. Today, i had a surge in the transmission while driving and the check engine light came on. Contacted toyota for service. I have had numerous electrical problems with this vehicle but feel that this one posed a safety hazard worthy of reporting.

My 4 runner shakes while on freeway going passed speed limit of 50mph it feels like i can tip over if going to fast. Some of the electrical things work then not work. It is mostly the shaking back and forth. I have to hold firmly to get it under control somewhat. People notice it when driving behind me. I am scared for my children and i.

While driving the accelerator pedal gave out. Motor was stilling running. I opened the hood to rev the motor from the throttle itself and nothng happened. I turned the car off and restarted and it seemed to reset whatever was wrong . I began driving and shortly thereafter the same thng happened. I pressed the pedal all the way to the floor and was able to get some speed. The next day it did not happened. Days later in traffic it happened again. The car losses speed almost instantly. This is very dangerous. If i were not able to press the pedal all the way to the floor and get some speed the out some would not be good. I found out that the accelerator position sensor is faulty and is the reason for the instant lose of speed. In searching the internet i found that many, many people have this same issue. Toyota should recall this part...it is definitely a hazard!*ln

On the evening of 2-4-10, i was traveling on an angled, curved, on-ramp to a freeway, when the vsc (vehicle skid control) suddenly and automatically applied the vehicle brakes.the vehicle speed was approx. The recommended speed for the turn.the conditions were wet, as it had been raining off and on all day.a beeping sound was heard, and simultaneously the vehicle lost traction, and traveled in a tangent/straight direction to the curved on-ramp.i had zero control of the vehicle for ~3 long seconds, and ended up sideways on the shoulder of the road.luckily, no one was hurt nor close by. This could easily happen on a yield turn, causing a blind-sided t-bone collision, or rear-ended collision.this faulty system needs immediate fixing, and should be considered an extreme safety hazard.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician informed the contact that the knock sensors needed to be replaced. The technician advised the contact not to drive the vehicle because the frame was severely rusted. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 256,518.

On 7/7/12 i was driving for a dog rescue transport and noticed a strong fuel smell in the vehicle. I thought nothing of it at first since i had just filled up the truck and a gas can. What i did notice was my gas gauge was dropping incredibly fast so i looked for a clear area on shoulder that should the truck catch fire. (very dry in nj at the time) i found my area and shut truck off and drifted into the shoulder. Exited the vehicle and began rushing to empty the seven dog crates (just in case) on the shoulder behind guard rail. Once we were all clear, i walked over to vehicle and popped hood. There was fuel saturating everything, including still dripping from insulation material under the hood directly onto and around the exhaust area.by toyota design, there is a clip that retains/separates two hoses directly on top of the fuel line that had worn a hole into the fuel line. On 7/9/12 i went to toyota dealer to get the hose which i find out is part number 23801(p)-62071.it turns out there are only seven of this listed part in the whole united states and that it would cost me $75 and a week or more to get the part. I went home and browsed the net to find only one store that stocks this item and ordered through them to save about $20 but still the same turn around time (lost about $67 in fuel as tank is now bone dry plus a $250 flatbed tow fee. I am out almost $400). I has been a week my vehicle has been out of service due to a toyota design flaw, and they will not fess up to the design flaw or even offer a loaner car.

Since i got the car, the ignition key does not get in properly and sometimes does not start the car. The movement of the wheel helps sometimes. There have also been leaking engine covers that needed to be replaced. The structure gets rusty and there is problem with transmission.

After i my mechanic replaced the catalytic converter for $1500.00, this problem began.the vehicle began to buck (jerk violently) as i was accelerating to 45 mph.it always happens at about 20 mph as i try to accelerate to 30, 35 or 40 mph.the engine revs up to 3 of 4k before the transmissions engages forcefully.this has been going on for now 3 months.

[xxx]just driving along a loud noise was followed by excessive vibration and a connecting rod became disconnected from the crankshaft for no explainable reason, no crash occurred but easily could have as the oil pan was punctured and oil spilled out on the highway. I have discovered five out of warranty cases identical to mine in 5vz-fe engines where just driving along a loud noise was followed by excessive vibration and a connecting rod became disconnected from the crankshaft for no explainable reason and in each case no other service issue was identified:1999 4runner, failed at 78,000 miles in 20031999 4runner, failed at 98,000 miles in 20062000 4runner, failed at 78,000 miles in 20062001 4runner, failed at 103,000 miles in 20082001 tacoma, failed at 92,000 miles in 2007.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While driving approximately 25 mph, she noticed a noise and the vehicle would not accelerate. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the motor was the root of the failure; however, they didn't provide an explanation why the failure occurred. The dealer offered a $5,000 rebuilt motor at the owners expense. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were approximately 67,000.

Hvac issue causes check engine light to stay on for 2001 toyota 4 runner.took issue to be repaired but still occurs. Gas leaks due to the issue.

I initially contacted magic auto center and was dealing with [xxx] regarding a 2001 toyota land rover that i was interested in.[xxx] told me he could give me $1000 for my trade and use that for my down payment.when i called the dealership on friday the 29th, i spoke with [xxx].[xxx] informed me that the vehicle i was interested in had been sold but they had a 2001 toyota 4runner priced similarly.at that point, i submitted all of my credit information by e-mail to [xxx] address above.anthony contacted me back and said that the owner wanted $1000 cash and would give me $500 for my trade.i agreed to that, even though it would cause me a financial hardship because i needed a more reliable vehicle than what i had.i arrived at the dealership a bit before 8pm on the 29th and advised them that i was in a hurry as i needed to pick my daughter up by 9pm. When i arrived, i was then asked to provide $750 cash, $250 on 11/2/2010 and an additional $500 on 11/18/2010, plus my trade.i had specifically asked that everything be in order before my arrival since they are located far from my residence.i was given the run around until almost 8:30 pm.i did not test drive the car (my fault) because i was so rushed, but was assured that it was in excellent running condition by both [xxx] and[xxx].i signed the paperwork, provided them with a check for $500 dated 11/18/2010 and agreed that i would bring $250 on 11/2/2010.i transferred my belongings from my trade to the toyota 4runner, with my son\s help, took the 4runner, my son, and our dogs and headed for the freeway.we got on the 170 south, to the 101 south, and the gas light came on...we got off the freeway and put gas in the vehicle, it was already after 9 at this point.we got back on the freeway and inadvertently got on the 10 freeway west, at that point a loud pop came from under the hood, followed by a huge puff of steam, the engine overheated. Hvac issue causes check engine light to stay on for 2001 toyota 4 runner.took issue to be repaired but still occurs. Gas leaks due to the issue.

When driving at 70 mph, the vehicle vibrates on the highway. I have taken the vehicle constantly to the dealership for over two years complaining about this problem and they always told me that nothing was wrong. Today (5/10/14), the mechanic at the dealership put the truck on a rack and ran the car at 45 mph and there was visible vibration coming from the drive shaft and a loud noise that i could never hear from within the vehicle. All this time, i have been driving a vehicle that i was unaware could have snapped apart. The sound cannot be heard in the cabin, so i could not even report that as a problem until today. I purchased three sets of new tires, had shocks and struts replaced, and brake pads to no avail. Finally, after searching the web yesterday, i realized that this is a common problem with other vehicles of the same make and model. I'm not sure if this problem has caused injury to others, but there should be a recall. This could cause a potentially fatal accident if that shaft breaks. I read that for similar models (toyota and lexus), the manufacturer replaced the parts under warranty, but nothing for the 4runner. The dealership is charging over $700 for this repair.

1-the rear liftgate will not unlock.2-the liftgate has no manual lock control and in an emergency cannot be opened.3-the problem is not yet corrected. The toyota mechanic said it can be a real problem trying to remove the access panel with the liftgate closed.

On october 11th 2014, i was driving my 2001 4runner, on my way to work. Had just turned off a road with a speed limit of 55. As i hit 35mph, my car comes to a jolting stop with a loud bang and drag on the tires. The car still ran, but the car wouldn't move. I had to finish walking to my job, as i was cellphone-less at the time. I had to pay to have my car towed home, missing an entire day's work, which was a loss of 120$. The guy who towed me told me it was definitely something to do with my rear end. So i had a family friend who is a retired mechanic look it over to see if he could spot what the problem was. First thing noticed was my emergency break was on and frozen. They remove it, clean it, put it back on. I start the car, go to move it and theres a continuous loud bang and the car again comes to the stop. The emergency break froze again. They once again take it off, and so far it hasn't refroze. However, my car is still making the loud banging noise coming from the rear end, which they have concluded is coming from the rear differential housing unit. Which they found a decent sized hole in, which it appears someone tried to cover with a yellow glue type substance. I just bought the car, and am now carless. As i have 2 small children, and cannot afford to fix a problem that can cost up to $3,000 to fix. Luckily i was only going 35 mph when it broke, and there was no one following behind me, or i would have been re ended, and had more to fix that i already do. This is a huge problem with the model car, and toyota really needs to issue a recall on the differential unit!!! it's fairly dangerous. I loved this car before this incident. But now it's useless til i can afford this fix.

Vehicle was parked in my gravel driveway. My home contractor smelled an odor & discovered that my rear was leaking gear oil. My husband, who is somewhat handy with cars, ended up sanding off lots of rust on the pumpkin, then cleaned it & used jb weld to seal where he thought the leak was coming from. (where the parking brake cable was attached.) this actually held for several years. Well, now at approx. 125,000 miles, the leak is back with a vengeance! and coming from a different place or places. The rust is bad. No one can believe it. I have taken it to the mechanic in town twice in the past 2 weeks, where he has tried to seal it while it was up on a lift, but it keeps leaking badly. I do not drive that often but do have to make a 100 mile round trip at least once a week, & upon arriving home just now, it is a mess again. My husband just put in about 20 oz. Of gear oil & we are wondering what to do next. I have been reading on 4 runner internet forums about many others with the same problem. This is totally unacceptable. These vehicles are definitely not what you would call cheap to buy, but apparently they are cheaply made with inferior metal. I am afraid to drive my 4 runner, & also cannot afford an expensive repair. If this rusting is happening to so many other 4 runner owners, then toyota should do something about it. I took care of my vehicle, but it may not be taking care of me! please help!

Toyota 2001 4-runner,the vehicle has an excessive amount of underbody, frame, drive train rust specifically the rear differential housing unit. The problem first encountered was the rr. Differential housing rusted through and is leaking oil from it.so i called toyota executive office and spoke with an executive analyst, i explained in detail what the problem was , she arranged for the vehicle to be taken to a toyota dealer and inspected by their mechanics and the report reads as follows.inspected rear differential , inspected housing -found fluid leaking from housing at yoke through rear cover ;metal porous and thin. Recommended replacement of housing and associated hardware repair estimate $1491.28 plus tax. They also noted several other issues that i cannot be sure if it was caused by excessive rust or normal wear.then under miscellaneousa general inspection, by technician reads as follows vehicle undercarriage has heavy corrosion - - found perforation at front shackle on right rear of frame. Second problem, at the end of the inspection report under the comments section the technician, hand writtensaidframe is bad, rust perforation(sloppy writing ) i believe it said, right rear rail . So after the executive analyst read the report she called me and said there is nothing toyota can do because the vehicle is out of warranty and there are no recalls. I researched on line for excessive rust and rr. Diff. Leaking, and found many other vehicles have a lot of the same problems developing.thank you

Vsc, stability/traction control system limits power to normally accelerate from a stop while 4wd engaged. Happens 99% of time when in 4wd rarely in 2wd mode. Direction doesn't affect(can be going straight or turning either left or right) may result in rear end or side impact collision because following or oncoming vehicle not expecting my vehicle to be an obstruction. No help from dealer.

The back of the rear differential housing started leaking about one drop per second.the vehicle has 113,800 miles.we bought the car with about 20,000 miles.it has received the recommended maintenance.the source of the leak is severe corrosion that has removed much of the structural metal of the differential housing.the leak is coming through several cracks that have passed through the remaining metal.the only available repair is to replace the entire rear axle housing to the tune of between $2000 and $3000. This type of corrosion is unusual.i have not experienced this sort of malfunction in nearly 50 years of driving.

I have a toyota 2001 4runner with 77563 miles. The rear differential has rusted thru and leaks. Toyota is unwilling to help.

Rear differential has had normal wear up until recently when i noticed a section of the rear diff leaking and rotting. The way the rear axle housing is build it does not have a rear cover like most. But that is the section that has flaked and begun to leak. The fill plug is in the same area which also is rusted. Making it not possible to check the fluid level. If your in a spot were you don't have the finances take care of the problem it leaves you in a spot of drive it till the rear end detonates.being as this is a common problem for toyota and it being a one part fix. I feel toyota needs to look into covering it under warranty or at least good willing parts prices than leaving myself and others in the spot of a $3,000.00 bill due a known problem.

The rear differential on my toyota 4runner rusted so badly in 9 years of ownership that the structural steel frame that supports the differential gears (the housing) cracked and oil spilled out on the road. I discovered the rust during the yearly state inspection and consequently had the differential inspected by my toyota dealer (berlin city portland, me) a few months back and they said it was structurally sound but rusty.i am an engineer and clearly it was not structurally sound or it would not have failed in short order as it did....this failure could have caused the rear wheels to lock up resulting in a severe accident.this rust problem is common on most toyota truck frames and drive trains owned in the north east.toyota has elected to repair the trucks at no cost but not the 4runners with the same frame and differentials.this is dangerous as [xxx]...they put me and my family at grave risk....information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Since i got the car, the ignition key does not get in properly and sometimes does not start the car. The movement of the wheel helps sometimes. There have also been leaking engine covers that needed to be replaced. The structure gets rusty and there is problem with transmission.

Eccesive rust on the frame and body makes it unsafe to drive as intended

Driving down the highway in 2001 toyota 4-runner going about 60 andall of a sudden the rear end/tires locked upand got it to the side of highway barely and then it started smoking really bad.very lucky that it didn't cause a wreck or no one got hurt.can't drive it or nothing, makes a loud knocking noise in the rear end and also when you turn the key on inside the vehicle all lights are on and its making a terrible buzzing noise.so had to have it towed and that cost me also andi need the whole rear differential and that's a lot of money.i've seen other problems/complaints about the same thing that happened to mine.i really think something should be done about it, toyota should be fixing the problem and we shouldn't have to pay for it. Hopefully something gets done about this.

On the rear end differential housing, the back cover area (non replaceable) has become so porous because of heavy rust scaling and flaking that differential fluid seeps from it. The rest of the differential housing is made of thicker, heavier gauge metal and seems ok. This issue will cause the gear oil to drop below the required level causing differential failure or lock up and at highway speeds could be disastrous.when i realized i had this problem, i searched the toyota forums online and it appears to be a very common issue with these vehicles and toyota is aware but will do nothing about it. They will replace entire rusted out frames on trucks under recall, but refuse to address this issue? to add insult to injury they want $3000 to replace a known inferior/defective part.i have had to resort to makeshift repairs using brush on bed liner to stem the leaking and check the fluid to keep it full. But what about people who are not mechanically inclined or who are completely unaware?

After i my mechanic replaced the catalytic converter for $1500.00, this problem began.the vehicle began to buck (jerk violently) as i was accelerating to 45 mph.it always happens at about 20 mph as i try to accelerate to 30, 35 or 40 mph.the engine revs up to 3 of 4k before the transmissions engages forcefully.this has been going on for now 3 months.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle differential was corroded and developed a leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the rear differential assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 180,000.

Rear differential cover rusted through with only 22650 miles on vehicle. Dealer had to replace the whole rear axle assembly at a cost of $1800 because the cover is welded on and cannot be replaced separately. My concern is for the frame rusting out and subsequent safety issue as indicated by the number of other complaints listed here. I understand the tacoma's have similar problems and similar frames. The warranty for corrosion has been extended by toyota for the tacoma. When are you going to do something about this?

When on a long highway trip on the weekend of june 7, 2008, my husband noticed black spots on the rear window of our 2001 toyota 4runner (121,000 miles).he cleaned it off to see if it returned as we resumed our journey.when we next stopped several hundred miles later, the black spots were on the entire rear of the vehicle.my husband checked beneath the rear of the vehicle and saw transmission fluid dripping out of the differential.we then took the vehicle to a mechanic who reported that the rear axle housing was completely corroded to the point of failure, and that it was beyond repair, and that he hadn't ever seen this on a car of this age and mileage.he informed us that toyota has recently recalled tacoma vehicles from the same year for similar corrosion problems.we contacted toyota and they said there was nothing they could do for us.we are left with a vehicle that is beyond repair that we are unable to sell, and we have maintained it in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.please help.the consumer was informed the entire rear axle including the axle, differential, brakes, and exhaust system were corroded beyond repair. Updated 08/27/08.

The rear differential is rusting through to the point of leaking oil. I suspect the differential is corroded to the point where ismechanically unsound and could cause a catastrophic failure if hit by a rigid obstacle in the roadway.

2001 toyota 4runner rear axle housing rot/leak, no signs of abuse.

My 2001 4 runner with only 125,000miles has a rusted out rear differential. This was shocking to me because my truck is in otherwise excellent condition and has absolutely no rust on the body. I took it to toyota who said they can replace it for $2200 plus tax. I took it to my husband's mechanic to repair/patch it if possible. He said he has seen many vehicles with more miles than mine in much worse condition that have no rusted out rear differentials. He found it very unusual. He said the metal housing is very thin (from the factory that way) which is the root of the problem. The mechanic welded a patch over the hole; however this is not a good permanent fix for the problem. It also makes my 4 runner have next to nothing for trade in value for a truck that otherwise would have a nice trade in value. This makes it a double insult.after talking to many people and visiting the www.4runnerforum.com web site it seems to be a common problem in 4runners years 1999 to 2002. I would imagine more people have the problem than have reported it to the website. I would like to know if there is anything toyota can/will do to rectify the problem as it seems to be caused by a manufacturing defect. Other than this problem, my 4 runner has been a great vehicle.toyota has a history of great vehicles. I know they recalled the tacoma trucks from the late ' 90's for frame rustout and gave the owners 2 x the trade in value towards a new toyota. Because of this recall, i know toyota is willing to stand behind their vehicles. Toyota offering a replacement of the defective part or "trade in value" towards a new toyota would be a great customer service and would go a long way towards keeping loyal customers. If they do nothing, it makes me hesitant to purchase another toyota not knowing if the metal housings on the rear differentials are manufactured any better in 2010..

Rear differential housing rusted through.this caused loss of lubrication oil, required the replacement of the entire differential housing.thin metal and lack of rust prevention are the cause.

My 4runner's rear differential has pinhole leaks due to rust.the rest of the vehicle is in excellent condition and has been very well taken care of including chassis washes at least twice a week in the winter.

My vehicle has very little rust except for the rear differential. Large flakes of rust have formed. The differential recently began leaking. After searching online i see this is a common problem with 4runners.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While the contact was at an independent mechanic for a muffler replacement, he was informed that the vehicle frame was severely rusted. The mechanic stated that the muffler could not be replaced and a leak was present. The dealer (mcgee toyota of hanover, 860 washington st, hanover, ma 02339, (866) 942-1756) informed the contact that the frame and differential housing needed to be replaced. The differential housing was repaired, but the frame was not. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 170,000.

Rear differential housing rusted through.the housing cover is a thinner metal than the differntial axle and is not replaceable.oil leaks out through the rusted cover until oil is depleted and could cause drivetrain failure while operating the vehicle.dealer said they will do nothing to help.this is an item that should never fail on a vehicle.my vehicle has absolutely no body rust, yet this part fails due to rust!this is unacceptable and toyota should step up and take care of the issue.obviously there are numerous complaints on this site and many more on the internet forums.toyota loses much respect if they do not address this issue.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the differential housing corroded and caused fluid to leak. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

2001 toyota 4 runner 4wd while speed 30 to 40 mph driving in a slow right bank ( not a curve) hear low beep noise skid lite icon comes on and as if truck took over i lost steering , brakes and power .brakes were activating on their own and the truck proceded across yellow line into oncoming traffic!!!toyota pull codes nothing said i must had put truck in a skid . No i didnot put truck into skid. Happen again this time wife following me and she witness it also .she said it was as if i was steering it into oncoming traffic.

Brake pedal pulsation due to front brake rotors. Replaced pads and turned rotors and problem was gone for three to four weeks. Problem came back. Problem has occurred persistently for over 100k miles. I am the second owner, purchased at 32k in 2003.

I was driving a 2001 toyota 4runner on a 2 lane mountain highway a couple years ago. Wintertime, wet road. Going 50 mph around a wide right turn, the anti-skid brake system suddenly screeched at me, and apparently applied the brakes on the left side of the car, causing it to swerve left towards the opposing lane of traffic. I managed to correct, and avoid an accident. I went with my friend whose car it was to the dealer later and described the occurrence. The dealer claimed that one of the tires was low.i never trust anti-skid brake systems since this occurrence. This kind of response is completely unacceptable.that same car also had a firmware glitch in the 4 wheel system that would cause the 4 wheel not to be disabled until you pulled over and shut off the engine for a bit, on an unfrequented basis.

On thursday, january 21, 2010, while driving the 2001 toyota 4 runner, the steering wheel locked up causing my son to drive completely off the road crashing and flipping the suv into a creek.the vehicle is in the process of being totaled.i did a recall research on the vehicle to find a steering loss, recall dated 2005.i purchased this vehicle in 09/07, from infinity of south atlanta.apparently the recall had not been done by the dealership before selling to me.*tw

Entered highway from on ramp as picked up speed steering wheel began to shake violently and began to loose control of suv. I immediately pulled over and had it taken to shop to find excessive rust on back frame n shock causing wheel to 'basically be free floating and unattached' the vehicle is still in shop at moment and i can get pictures and a statement upon request

On three separate occasions my 2001 toyota forerunner has had an issue where the steering wheel pulls to the right and locks up for about a second.on each occasion i was on a right hand curve in the road and was accelerating through the turn after initially slowing down to begin the curve.on each occasion i was obeying the posted speed limit for the section of the road where the curve was located.as i began accelerating into the curve the steering wheel suddenly jerked to the right, a beeping noise occurred and the vehicle momentarily felt like the steering wheel locked up.a moment later the beeping stopped and steering control returned.in each situation i was able to avoid an accident.in two of the three occurrences i had a passenger in the vehicle with me.today took the vehicle to the toyota dealership and asked the service department to look into the issue.i advised them that i had seen a recall concerning the toyota avalon which seemed to be identical to the situation i had encountered.i informed them that the incidents had all been on right hand curves and that the occurrences had happened at spread out intervals over the last year.i was informed by the service department that they had been unable to replicate the problem.they did not examine the steering system but had taken the vehicle out for test drives in an attempt to experience the issue.i called the toyota corporate offices and reported the problem to them and advised that the vehicle was currently at the dealership in san diego.i've had no further contact with them and the dealership representative i spoke with was unaware if the corporate offices had contacted the dealership regarding the case.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner.while at the dealer for routine maintenance, the mechanic stated that the steering rod was failing.the dealer replaced the rod and the vehicle is currently operating normally.after the repair, the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number 05v389000 (steering:linkages:rod:relay:connecting) for an older 4runner that he previously owned, but for the same component that was just replaced.the contact believes that the failure is affecting the newer model 4runner's as well and a recall should be issued.the failure mileage was 230,000 and current mileage was 240,000.

First there were 3 recalls 1. 135468 2. 135469 and 3. 135469 dating back to 2005 that i was never notified of and i have a very bad corrugated metal bumpers and when i drive my vehicle and i hit a bump or something in the road it feels like my car is going to turn over. I had the shocks replaced and it hasn't helped

We were told today that our 2001` toyota 4-runner has frame rot that is inconsistent with the age of the vehicle and the condition of all the other parts on it. Frame rot that constitutes a danger to our safety when driving it. The repair technicians advised us to determine if it was part of toyota's frame rot recall with the tacomas and other vehicles because the frame rot rust was consistent with the pattern of damage they had seen on other recalled vehicles. When we looked up our 4-runner in the recall information, supposedly toyota hasn't included our truck in the recall. We were advised by our auto repair specialist that the recall covered damage in trucks that were the same age and overall condition, so it's not as though the rest of the truck is eaten up by rust and we just happened to complain about the frame rot. The frame rot pattern found on our 4-runner is consistent with the frame rot found on recalled toyota trucks and inconsistent with the rest of the vehicle's stability. Because this is such a dangerous situation, and because the frame rot is a known problem, it's important for other consumers to know that regardless of their care of the vehicle, the frame may rot at a rate that is inconsistent with the rest of the vehicle, and it costs lots of money to repair. 4-runner owners should have their vehicles checked for premature frame rot, and toyota should do the right thing and fix the frame rot in the 4-runners. Just thought that after we were made aware, so should other consumers and safety organizations.

Took my vehicle for oil change and was advised that the frame was badly rusted and should take vehicle to toyota immediately.toyota indicated that no recall was issued for this year model vehicle and nothing could be done.so i have a mechanically good vehicle that i can not use due to rusted frame.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact notice that the front and rear bumpers were covered with rust in march 2007. He took the vehicle to the dealership and the dealer told him that the road salt caused the bumper to rust. He called the manufacturer and filed a complaint with a representative. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 66,000. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.updated 04/12/10.

Frame rust issues. My frame has been rusting away for the entire time i've owned it, and it isn't getting any better. The passenger inside frame rail is rusted from the rear lower control arm mount to the cross member mount midway down the frame. The driver inside frame rail is rusted at the lower control arm mount as well, and slightly in front of it. When i purchased the vehicle i noticed a slight pit, and didn't think anything of it. Over the next year that pit got bigger until there was a large opening that you could fit two hands inside of.

The 4runner has developed surface rust on the frame underneath the car.the rust is also apparent on suspension components and brakes.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the dealer found the suframe corroded in the fuel tank area while the front rotors and brake pads were being replaced. The frame was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 112,080.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner.the contact stated that he noticed the muffler making a loud noise when driving at various speeds. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the rear sub frame mount area was corroded and exhibited holes. The manufacture advised the contact that the vehicle was a canadian vehicle therefore it could not be repaired in the united states. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 229,000.

Eccesive rust on the frame and body makes it unsafe to drive as intended

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while having routine maintenance performed on the vehicle, she was informed by an independent mechanic that due to the massive amount of corrosion to the frame, the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 125,000.

The body of my 2001 toyota 4runner is completely rusted out.recently, i brought the vehicle to a toyota service center who suggested that the vehicle no longer be driven due to safety concerns associated with driving the 4runner in its current condition.i was told the frame was completely rusted through, compromising the integrity of the frame.

Frame rusting out. Exterior of truck has no rust170k miles on 4runner

My frame has rusted out.i have kept it very clean and protected but still is rusting.

The frame on my 2001 rotted very quickly from the inside out. It is the same exact frame used on the tacoma (which was recalled) and on the 2002 4runner, which is currently under investigation. If i didn't get the necessary frame repairs it easily could have cracked in half when on the road. The main areas of rot are located at the rear control arm (which i had professionally repaired), and up front near the suspension and axle. My brothers 1997 4runner axle and suspension completely fell apart when he was driving on the road. He was lucky to not be on the highway. Someone definitely needs to look into this issue. I purchased the vehicle from the south four years ago (2014) with a spotless rock hard frame. Four years later the rear control arm areas mentioned above completely rotted through. This should not happen! i love my 4runner, but i can't believe how these truck frames weren't recalled along with the tacoma frames. It is the same exact frame...

Massive rust corrosion and pieces breaking away located underneath entire vehicle.the rust with breakage has intensified greatly in the last couple of years and required welding this year to pass inspection because the vehicle was unsafe.the welding consisted of welding the frame rail where the rear suspension mounts and a new bracket had to be welded on the axle housing that holds an upper rear strut rod because it rusted off.both were on the passenger side of vehicle.this vehicle only has 101,000 miles and is washed and waxed on a regular basis.

Hello, i own a 2001 4runner and the front and rear bumpers are rusting horribly with the front and rear bumpers actually having an hole all the way through. I have contacted toyota directly on 2 occasions and they have refused to do anything.i have been patching with fiberglass but the rust continues.i live in massachusetts and every 2001 4runner that i see on the road has the same problem.this is a safety issue since the rust affects the integrity of the function of the bumpers in the event of a collision.also, i cannot get an inspection sticker with holes in the bumpers.the cost to replace them is well over $1,300.from a visual inspection, large chunks will continue to rust off the inside of the bumpersduring the next 6 months.

I just purchased a 2001 toyota 4runner. All seemed fine .but when i went to get it inspected they would not pass starting it had frame rust through. I called toyota customer service who said and i also read online that thousands of toyota trucks have a frame recall but mine does not. And they are not willing to do anything.others had the frame replaced, repaired or bought back. Hopefully you can help me.

These vehicles are notorious for frame rust/rot. The tacoma of the same time period used the same frame as the 4runner and the tacoma has had a recall.

Massive rust and deterioration along inside panel of frame on passenger side revealed once exhaust system was removed for replacement.deteriorated section was about 24" long from rear axle mount to center stabilizer bar. Unknown deterioration on driver side due to location of fuel tank.

The 2001 toyota 4 runner is rusting out.my son and i both have cut our self on the rear bumper.i needed stitches for my injury.i have a scar to remind me not to purchase another toyota.the rust got so bad, i lost my bumper. When i looked under my vehicle at the frame, the entire bottom of the vehicle is riddled w/rust, including the frame. Called toyota to see if i could at least get a safety inspection of my frame, they told me that my 01 4runner was not part of any recall and any inspection would cost me money.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while having maintenance performed, the technician notified the contact that the frame was rotted due to excessive corrosion. The dealer was contacted and made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 204,507.

Brought vehicle to toyota dealer for removal of seized hardware. Technician pointed out rust spot on frame, rot has spread to wheel well on both sides of frame and has continued down to transmission crossmember. Technician pointed out rot has eaten through frame on both sides at rear control arm bracket. Spoke with other early 2000's 4runner owners who all have rot in same places. Preventative maintenance practices have been used on this vehicle since i purchased it. Frame has no drainage holes forward of rust holes in wheel wells. Concerned for other 4runner owners who are unaware of rust spots by control arm brackets. Further rust on frame in same spot on other vehicles could result in separation of bracket, control arm and rear axle from frame.

Went for inspection for 2001 toyota 4 runner. Frame is rusted and too bad. Mechanic said unsafe to be on the road. What a shame everything runs good. Now i am without a vehicle. The toyota 4 runners should have been recalled just like the tacoma's and sequoias.

The gram has rust perforation in which the left rear control arm has separated from the frame. While i was driving a heard a pop and started to lose proper control in steering vehicle.

Purchased vehicle took for mass inspection and failed due to rotted frame was told not road worthy and unsafe to drive called toyota they would not assist on repair vehicle has 145k miles on now vehicle dots on my driveway older gentleman i purchased from will not assist either spent $4k need assistance if possible please and thanks

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the entire frame of the vehicle was rusted. The vehicle was taken to northway toyota (727 new loudon rd, latham, ny 12110, (888) 885-1583) and the contact was informed that there was no recall to cover the repair. The manufacturer echoed the dealer's statement and issued case number: 1809211044. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000.

Took vehicle to local toyota dealership for safety and mechanical inspection after purchasing used; mechanic notes that frame is rusted through on passenger side, near lower trailing arm bracket and on drivers side near fuel tank skid plate. Damage appears to have originated on the inside of the frame and has eaten its way to the outside. Mechanic advised that vehicle may not be safe to drive, no recall by toyota on 4runners despite similar issues with same year tacoma.

Frame rusted through at rear near muffler. Bottom of frame section approximately 4" missing , inside of frame perforated through approximately 18". Rear support rod structural integrity compromised.vehicle was purchased new from local deal (lynch toyota, manchester ct) and is one owner garaged and maintained.contacted toyota and local dealer. Both unwilling to take any action. No recall on this vehicle.

Vehicle failed state inspection due to rusted frame. With the exception of rust on the bumpers (which is also a common problem for this generation 4runner) the rest of the vehicle is in excellent shape and mechanically very reliable. Inspection station suggested that i contact toyota since they were aware of recalls for rusted frames on other toyota trucks (tacoma, sequoia for example.) toyota stated that there are no recalls for 4runners but offered a $500 customer loyalty rebate if i were to purchase a new or certified used toyota vehicle. I believe this is a potential safety issue since the rusted frame problem would only be identified by a very thorough inspection of the underbody of the truck. It is possible that there are many other 4runners of this generation that are on the road with an undiagnosed rusted frame problem.

My 2001 toyota 4 runner was up on the lift for regular oil change. A service tech brought me to the service bay and informed me of a considerable amount of rust failure of the frame. Not surface rust, but rust that is causing the frame to separate causing visible cracks to appear. He advised me of the potential danger. He advised me that toyota has addressed this issue on tundra's, tacoma's and sequoia's but offers no relief for 4runner owners. The vehicle has 137,000 miles on it. My guess was that i had another 20-30,000 more to go as it doesn't travel many miles on a daily basis. Seems hard to reason that toyota has had replacement plans in place for other models with the same problem but not for the 4runner.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that he noticed a swaying while driving the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who stated that the sub frame was severely rusted between the sway bar and the differential. The certified mechanic referred the contact to the dealer. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the sub frame needed to be replaced. The dealer was concerned that the job was too extensive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and referred the contact to the nhtsa for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 119,000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While replacing the shocks on the vehicle, the contact noticed severe rust on the frame and a hole approximately 3 and 1/2 inches wide under the driver side. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 182,000.

The frame is rotting and the 4runner is unsafe.

Frame has rusted through the frame rails in multiple areas. Issue was not disclosed when the vehicle was purchased 01/13/2015, yet i found a repair order from 09/24/2014 that stated there were rust holes in the frame. Dealer is currently inspecting the extent of the frame damage and will recommend a resolution. I have several photos, but currently do not have them handy.

The chasis rusts and is damaged on the passenger side about 18 inches.

Frame of vehicle has severe rust damage throughout, told by state safety inspector that it is beyond repair.appears to have occurred slowly over the course of many years.

I noticed a pretty distinct wobble when driving my 2001 $runner on the highway recently.i took it to a mechanic who informaed my the frame has a 1 inch wide 18 inch long hole from rust.the mechanic says they can weld it to possibly give it some more time to live but that it is a ticking time bomb.there very well could be rust on the frame hidden behind the gas tank, but i am unable to look behind it. Toyota needs to take responsibility for their mistake when not properly coating these frames.they recalled other models for this same issue but failed to address the issue with the 4runner.

Extreme frame rust. Husband says vehicle is unsafe to drive. Even though the body looks great, the frame, where we can see it, is in terrible condition, with holes rusted through the metal. No accidents yet, but it's ominous to know in a collision this vehicle would crumple like paper. There are many other complaints of serious frame rust for other years of toyota 4runners. Please add my vehicle and safety concern to the growing list of other toyota owners facing the same frame disintegration.

The issue with my toyota is a rusted frame...rusted to the point that i was advised to park it and never drive it again without a new frame. Although it is a 2001 with 193,000 miles, it mechanically is in great condition. Exterior and interior in good condition, as well. I first noticed the vehicle had a floating sensation on the highway, at times feeling like i had no control with the steering wheel. After another 1-2 hrs of driving, i noticed that when driving over bumps or dips in the road, the truck would rock slightly side to side. It was significant enough that items in my back seat rocked, as well. After several more days and hours of drive-time thereafter, the rock advanced to the point where my entire vehicle was rocking so violently when crossing a bridge @40mph, i had no control over the vehicle. Even braking did not immediately stop the rocking. After that incident, i stopped driving the vehicle until i had it scheduled to take in to the mechanic. The problem with the rusted frame was identified almost immediately. I was told that the holes and rust were so extensive, that it was only a matter of a short amount of time before the frame would not only break apart, but break into several pieces. I was told that it was unsafe to drive and that the only solution was a frame replacement. I understand that toyota had a recall on their taucoma frames for that same year, but will not correct the identical problem with the 4runner frame. I have an otherwise wonderful vehicle sitting in my driveway that is too dangerous to drive because of toyota's known, faulty, unsafe frame.

Frame rusted through in several places.unsafe to drive.

I was at the toyota dealership having my brakeline on the front leftside repaired, after hitting a pothole; and i was told by phone, my frame is badly rusted through in multiple spots.

"takata recall" my 2001 toyota 4runner frame is rusted out and won't pass state inspection.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While performing an oil change, the technician noticed that the rear passenger side of the frame was completely corroded. The technician stated that the frame had to either be re-welded or replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 160,000.

Since i got the car, the ignition key does not get in properly and sometimes does not start the car. The movement of the wheel helps sometimes. There have also been leaking engine covers that needed to be replaced. The structure gets rusty and there is problem with transmission.

The vehicle frame has rusted through. My mechanic says this is unable to be inspected and should not be driven.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure was confirmed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, several times. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000. Updated 12/20/13the consumer stated the vehicle is on the same frame as other recalled toyota vehicles. Updated 12/26/13

The front and rear bumpers on my 2001 toyota 4runnder are completely rusted out (from the inside out).the rest of the vehicle is in excellent condition. Never been in an accident.anyone walking by the vehicle could accidentally brush by the bumpers and get cut from the jagged edges; also not sure what good they would do in case of any impact.

Dealer decline to do a transfer case repair because the vehicle frame is severely rusted to the point that the trailing arm mount is almost gone. Dealer advised me that the vehicle is unsafe and the frame will break through. I will need to buy a new vehicle

I was driving my truck on a city street in brooklyn, new york ( flatbush ave) when i suddenly smelled smoke followed by fire coming from the hood. I did not hit any bump and was not involved in any accident. By the time the fire department came, the entire front compartment of the truck was on fire.

While changing my oil, i noticed a few nice size holes in the frame, in front and besides the muffler. I wondering is it safe for me and my family to drive on a regular basis.

The frame of my 2001 toyota 4runner is rusted to the point that you can break some of it off in our hand. Recently took my vehicle in for an oil change and was told that it would not pass inspection in its current condition. This required welding to some sections in order to keep driving. The welding will only keep me on the road for now but the overall condition of the frame is very deteriorated. The vehicle has over 205,000 miles on it but has been garage kept and maintained to all other standards. The auto shop said that the vehicle should not rust this much. I called toyota national headquarters and they said that the year and model was not included in any recalls. I need this car so i had the garage repair the immediate safety concern. This was discovered by the technician conducting the oil change. The images attached were after the work as they had to grind out the rusted sections and replace with welded steel.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance, the contact was informed that the rear passenger side subframe displayed excessive corrosion. The contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe and should not be driven. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,063.

Frame rust on multiple locations.suspension shot right through rotted frame.frame has structural damage as a result of rust.car is not safe to drive! i almost killed myself driving the car when the suspension penetrated right through the rotted rusted frame.

Vehicle frame corrosion/rot.. Bad frame (just like the tacoma i had recalled due to bad frame)

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While driving 40 mph, the frame failed without warning and caused the vehicle to wobble. The vehicle was driven home where it was pieced back together. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000. Updated 11/13/17 the consumer stated the frame rusted. Updated 11/16/2017

3rd generation 2001 toyota 4runner with excessive frame and body rust. The gas tank stem is rusted, the rear differential is literally porous and leaking oil due to excessive rust. Rear bumper is rusted, spare tire mount is rusted.other areas of rust are too numerous to list.repair shop said car is not worth fixing.dana corp that made frames for toyota tacomas/tundras that were recalled also is best know for rear differentials. Why weren't the 4runners included in the recall/buyback by toyota?

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for maintenance. The mechanic noticed severe rust under the vehicle and pieces of metal falling out by chunks, including the frame. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 143,000.

The rear axel housing on our 2001 sr5 toyota 4-runner is rusted out pretty bad.the entire first layer of thin metal has completely flaked off.it has not began to leak yet, but it is a matter of time until it does.toyota indicated that there has not been a recall issued on this part, which i think there should be since it is such a common occurrence with 1999 - 2002 toyota 4 runners.the entire vehicle is in great shape, and runs great - we couldn't be happier with its performance.but the rotting rear axel not only is surprising, but has me quite concerned that we will end up with a pretty expensive repair without toyota taking responsibility for an obviously defective rear axel housing.if anyone simply does and internet search regarding this problem - you will see that are literally thousands of toyota trucks that are experiencing this problem with the rear axel housing.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner.the contact stated that during an inspection she was notified that the right side of the frame completely corroded.the vehicle was taken to a dealer.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for routine maintenance when he was advised that the subframe was severely corroded and fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for further inspection where they confirmed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive.the vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic diagnosed that the frame and subframe had severe corrosion. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Ma 10/22/2015

Extreme rust on frame and surrounding components. The 4runner only has 115k miles on it.

My 2001 4runner vehicle will not pass inspection due to corrosion, actual holes and soft spot, on the rear part of the frame in the muffler area.concerned with failure when towing 300 lbs trailer.no other issues with the vehicle, 112k miles and bought new 11 years old.only detecting the problem now.should not be needing to replace frame. Cost estimate $10k, shopping around for better pricing.cost to repair 40% of the original purchase price or twice what the vehicle books today.contacted toyota and they will not even disclose # of complaint on this issue.their only comments is there is no recall at this time.finding numerous people experiencing the same issue.

Severely rusty frame. My 4runner only has a little over 114k miles on it. It shouldn't have anywhere near the amount of rust on the frame. It's everywhere and flakes off to the touch.

Extreme rust on my 4runner's frame. Can be seen easily from in and outside of vehicle. I have many pictures to document. The recall on toyota tacoma and tundra should be expanded to include 96-02 toyota 4runner.

The vehicle was damaged beyond repair. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 128,000. Updated 02/10/12updated 03/12/12

When i took my vehicle to get a state inspection at my toyota dealership, the mechanic found a rust hole on my frame . It is located on the passengers side right beside the muffler. This vehicle is serviced regularly at this dealership since it was new. There are forums on the internet that have many people that have the same problem that i do. If these frames are this inferior they should be recalled just like the tacoma and tundra.

Vehicle has a frame that isrusted on passenger side and was told by a mechanic on 3/20/15 that it should be in a recall asap. Differential cover is a rusted bullet and is leaking. There is no changing it as cover is a solid weld no bolts to take off to change cover. Brilliant idea by toyota.

Left side frame rotted out.

On routine check and inspection, toyota arlington and toyota schaumburg called my attention regarding a premature rusting on the underbody frame and resulted in a linear hole by the rear left and right portions of the vehicle. This according to the service advisors of both toyota dealerships may make the vehicle unsafe to operate and may result to uncontrolled stability during driving.

The frame on my 4runner will not pass inspection due to rust, which i need to repair. The vehicle does not have much miles on it and should not rust like it did from the inside. The rust is from the inside, which makes it very dangerous to have on the road especially in states where an inspection is not required. It could easily go unnoticed until it is too late, and somebody could get hurt or killed when the frame fails.

The under carriage has been rusting since i noticed approx. 4 yrs after purchase. I now have been unable to pass inspection or drive vehicle since entire under carriage is completely rusted out. When attempt was made to place on lift to observe it began to crack or split . I have only 87000 miles on it and the rest of vehicle is clean and basically rust free. It is march 27 , 2015 and has been sitting in driveway for last3 yrs. The toyota dealership in wappingers falls stated that toyota is planning on repairing but is uncertain as to when. At present the back parking lot is filled with new under structures for other models.i would like to know when this ongoing terrible and dangerous problem will be repaired.

Vehicle failed inspection in may 2014 due to excessive frame rust and perforation.the frame was rusted so badly that the service advisor at new rochelle toyota advised "due to excessive frame perforation do not let customer drive vehicle."

Vehicle frame is rusting to the point of perforation. I discovered today two holes, one on each the driver and passenger side, inner frame rails just behind the rear crossmember. My concern is it may be rotting from the inside out. Is the manufacturer going to issue a recall on these frames as they have done on tacomas and tundras? this car is in excellent condition otherwise and i had planned to drive it for much longer due to its handling and safety.

My vehicle has very little rust except for the rear differential. Large flakes of rust have formed. The differential recently began leaking. After searching online i see this is a common problem with 4runners.

While driving down the highway at approximately 65mph our toyota 4runner suddenly began to shake and sway violently and was very difficult to control. I pulled over and checked but did not see anything apparent. We had the car checked at our local toyota dealer and was told the frame is corroded completely thru and the rear trailing arm was separated from the frame. The dealer advised that vehicle is no longer safe to drive and they would not be able to repair since the frame was so badly rusted. We bought the car new and have always taken very good care of the vehicle and followed recommended maintenance. There is no apparent rust on any of the body for this vehicle and is in excellent operating condition otherwise. We had planned on keeping the vehicle for several more years but now left with nothing but apparently being able to sell for salvage.

Left side frame rotted out.

The frame rusted out and is very dangerous to drive .there are many complaints involving the frame rust on the 4 runners and toyota will not help with the problem

I was going over a rail rd crossing, and there was a loud bang and knocking after. Brought it to a shop, and they said that my driver side upper, rear shock went through my shock mount.

The vehicle frame has rusted through. My mechanic says this is unable to be inspected and should not be driven.

The frame is rusting out very badly, thus leaving vehicle unable to operate it soon.

Frame rust on left rear frame at attachment point of lower control arm which locates axle to frame. Rust holes in frame around this same area.

Brought the car in for rear end repair and had 2 reputable mechanics refuse to repair the truck because they said the frame was so badly rusted that it would be a hazard to even drive the truck irregardless of any repair that they could perform

Took my vehicle for oil change and was advised that the frame was badly rusted and should take vehicle to toyota immediately.toyota indicated that no recall was issued for this year model vehicle and nothing could be done.so i have a mechanically good vehicle that i can not use due to rusted frame.

The frame has suffered serious rust through also described as "frame rot" in postings on line of toyota 4-runner problems.this rust through has made the vehicle unsafe and currently unusable.the rust was discovered when the entire rear axle was replaced at my expense. Toyota would not allow that they were responsible for faulty manufacturing of the rear axle either which was yet another safety concern.

The 4runner has developed surface rust on the frame underneath the car.the rust is also apparent on suspension components and brakes.

I purchased a used 2001 toyota 4 runner 4 wheel drive last year with approx 88 k mile. Prior to giving it to my daughter i replaced the tires ( goodyear) and took the vehicle to my local toyota dealershipon6-2-2007 requesting a full check of the vehicle to verify road worthiness prior to giving it to my 16 year old daughter. They suggested and performed 90 k maintenance package including suspension inspection and front end alignment. She returned to virginia and has been driving it daily on paved roads to high school. She has not taken it off road or used the 4 wheel drive. Last weekend she was slowly turning into her friends driveway and the right front wheel broke off the axle collapsing the wheel and ripping out the front axel. A state trooper passing by indicated athighway speeds this likely would of flipped the vehicle. Thank heavens she was going less than 10 mph. The vehicle was towed and at a local repair shop it was noted that the lower ball joint "dropped down" triggering the catastrophic front end failure.toyota recalled 210,000 axles on the prados vehicle ( not distributed in usa) which is on a similar platform as the 4 runner. Blog entries describe similar failures with the wheels snapping off. I contacted my toyota service manager and described the failure. I requested he evaluate and asked if they missed this on their inspection in june. I also request that they cover the repair costs of approx. $600.00 to includea detailed inspection and l ball joint replacement. He indicated they would not cover the repair expenses. My concern is this failure should not have occurred if the joint was assessed as road worthy june 2007 and only approx. 9 k miles have been added since then with no pothole or off road trauma noted. How can i be assured that this won't happen again maybe at highway speeds with life threatening outcomes? have similar complaints been filed?does this warrant further investigation by your agency and or toyota?

The suspension recall on my 2001 toyota 4runner was done at around 60k miles. It now has 116k miles and the problem is back,i can turn my steering wheel about 1/2" in either direction and not have the wheels move, when driving the steering wanders and occasionally grabs in what feels like a flat spot..the campaign no is 05v225000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph the traction control light illuminated on the instrument panel, and the vehicle began to pull towards the left. After a few moments, the failure corrected itself. The failure recurred approximately seven times. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or to be repaired. The manufacturer was aware of the failure and advised the contact to call a dealer. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 140,000.

Muffler fell off got parts and while changing muffler found out that my frame is rusted clear through!! what is being done about this i see a lot of other owners with this same problem this is the second toyota that i have had this happen to really starting to wonder about the buying toyotas anymore

The unfortunate & common frame rust issue that has plagued thousands of owners of this model toyota has now affected us. Safety concern quite high since the structural integrity is severely compromised due to a design flaw as noted countless times by numerous 4runner owners.this issue is identical to that with tacoma frames of the same vintage (which are identical in design & build to that of this model style 4runner), which was addressed by toyota motor corporation. Yet no recall to assist 4runner owners has been executed. It appears that toyota is allowing vehicles to become prematurely unusable & unsafe for consumers.toyota has either replaced some frames on similar vintage 4runners or has provided reimbursement to owners suffering from premature failure... But only very sporadically. I have contacted toyota motor corporation & was told their is nothing that they are going to rectify for us, yet there are others that do receive a resolution of some kind.as a paramedic i see first hand what tragedy occurs on our roadways... And this situation worries me greatly with vehicles that are supposed to protect it occupants in the event of a crash, but may now actually contribute to the unnecessary harm or possible death of it's occupants/operators.

Vehicle was in for air conditioning service and during inspection the service tech noted rust on the frame of the vehicle, deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive.vehicle has been services by the same toyota dealership since 2002 and has performed the same inspection during each visit, why was it just identified during this visit and when the vehicle is unsafe to drive?is it more profitable to not identify the rush to customers and because fix the rust issue or to sell more expensive cars.the dealership deemed that they would not fix the vehicle in a complaint filed through the bbb but would offer a credit towards the purchase of a new vehicle!!this further supports the premise that toyota intentionally overlooks some issues if they can realize a greater value.rust identified is on the driver side rear frame.service tech said about $7,500 to repair at the dealership.

Frame rusting.

The frame is rusting out very badly, thus leaving vehicle unable to operate it soon.

Excessive corrosion to frame and related chassis components. This vehicle was bought in 2001 and serviced at our local toyota dealer for routine service all these years and never mentioned frame rust, until we had it serviced at a local muffler repair shop to replace the exhaust system.we have contacted toyota and they informed us that the truck is off warranty and that there is nothing they can do for us,this is why we are contacting nhtsa ,to inform the agency of this problem which is similar to the case currently with the tacoma, sequoia and the tundra tucks manufactured by toyota

The frame rusted out and is very dangerous to drive .there are many complaints involving the frame rust on the 4 runners and toyota will not help with the problem

Suspension mount on frame in front of driver's rear wheel broke off due to unusual amount of rust.this impaired control of vehicle at speed, i almost went in ditch as rear of vehicle swayed back and forth severly (like rocking a boat) i had this repaired to continue driving. As of 8-30-15 the same part on other side is almost broken offresearch shows this to be very common, why is it not addressed?

Ignition key will not turn when trying to start the vehicle. This problem is happening on and off since about about six months ago.

The frame is rusting out and is deemed unsafe to drive

First there were 3 recalls 1. 135468 2. 135469 and 3. 135469 dating back to 2005 that i was never notified of and i have a very bad corrugated metal bumpers and when i drive my vehicle and i hit a bump or something in the road it feels like my car is going to turn over. I had the shocks replaced and it hasn't helped

This is an ongoing issue with toyota frames. The frames on the 3rd generation 4runner, and the equivalent frame on the toyota tacoma are prone to rotting. Toyota stepped up to replace the tacoma frames since they were cracking in half. Although, the 4runners are suffering from the exact same issues and toyota is doing nothing about it. I've recently had to remove a 2" x 24" section of frame on the passenger side that was completely rusted through. The frame rot is occurring from the rear lower control arm mount on the passenger side of the car forward until the cross member.

My 2001 tacoma had frame rust issues last year. I went to the local dealer and was told there was nothing they could do about it because the repair time frame had expired. They would have gladly sold me a new truck. Sorry, no can do. I took the truck to a weld shop and had the frame patched with new steel. Problem fixed. I just got back from the mechanic's after learning that he can't inspect it because of the severely rusted frame! it just rusted around the patches. Junk price is way low but what is the alternative?

Takata recall the frame is rotten inside the frame railunder the right hand front seat not able to get a inspection sticker the body is great no rust just like my 04 tundra now it has a new frame

"takata recall" my 2001 toyota 4runner frame is rusted out and won't pass state inspection.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota 4runner. While in park, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into the garage. The contact mentioned that the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to avoid the crash. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed. The contact sustained unknown injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 197,000.

With engine running and while stopped at intersection, brake pedal is released, then accelerator pedal is pressed, vehicle begins moving, all check engine lights turn on, car stalls in the middle of the intersection (with oncoming traffic). This situation has occurred 3 times and may have lead to at least one fender bender where the vehicle in question was hit from behind because following car thought that my car was accelerating through the intersection. After stalling, all 3 check engine lights may or may not stay on. After putting car in neutral and restarting engine, car accelerates on runs normally until next stalling event. Since january 2010,i have been to the toyota dealer service department 4 times. I have had 2 gas caps replaced, oxygen meter replace, break/accelerator pedal checked, charcoal canister replaced, new battery, and several oil changes. The problem still persists. This upcoming weekend they said they will change the throttle body assembly.

The sun visor/vanity mirror of my 4runner continually falls into my field of vision due to being loose.causes possible vision impairment for a couple seconds in addition to the concentration it takes to get it to stay again up near the roof.
