Info copy ltr fwd to toyota regarding front suspension lower ball joint recall, customer dissatisfied w/quality of current toyota vehicles.**reference 10140998*** on 2 occasions, the starter would only click. The vsc, trac, vsc off and abs lights illuminated and stayed on for a couple of days and finally went off on their own.two weeks later the lights illuminated again, the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and upon inspection, they determined a sensor inside the right wheel area had been damaged.the dealer claimed the consumer ran over something.the consumer refused to pay for the repairs. The dealer did inform the consumer if the repairs were not made the anti-lock brake system would not work.
Dashboard gauges, escpecially speedometer and fuel gauge, are difficult or impossible to read in daytime. Situation is made worse when wearing sunglasses. Problem is that gauges are recessed too deep and letters are not contrasted enough with dash plate (ie light gray on dark gray). Toyota acknowledges problem as they have issued a tsb which essentially keeps dash lights on all the time. Turning on dashboard lights does not solve problem as lighting is an amber color. Solution is two stage lighting. Bright white in daytime and amber or blue in night.

2003 toyota 4-runner v6 sr5 generates this unusual (tick, tick, tick) engine noise especially when accelerating. It sounds like a loose part in the engine block. This noise is especially noticeable when the 4-runner, driven by my wife, accelerates by me or when i drive with the window open next to a wall.it also sounds like there might be an exhaust leak somewhere in the exhaust system.*nlm
My new forerunner has 60000 km(lots of highway driving) on it and is experiencing the same problems documented by so many others. I usually have a friend of mine do the oil changes and therefore do not have documentation of the details. This initial problem arose on a weekend. I contacted my dealer and they couldn't get me in for a week. They told me to get the engine flushed immediately at a jiffy lube(or the like). I did so and that is when i started seeing smoke and having the engine either jerk or not respond at all. When the dealer finally had a look at it he told me i had neglected the engine and he would not go any further until i agreed to pay (no price offered as of yet, although he did say that it would probably be at least a piston ring job, possibly an engine). He also accused me of putting in a new oil filter to hide a problem. You can only imagine how useless and pathetic that made me feel.i previously owned a '99 forerunner(purchased new as well) and had not experienced any problems at all. I liked it so much i convinced both my sister and parents to purchase toyota's!i suppose my first question is whether or not you have seen any issues regarding this models engine. I have seen notes documenting the 2002 forerunner 2.2(4 cylinder), 3.0 and 3.6 litre v6, but not the 3.4 litre(which is what i believe mine to be).at this point in time toyota has not called back to let me know what they will do and for how much, but have suggested it will not be covered under warranty.
I bought a new toyato 4 runner and the vehicle smell constantly. I spoke with toyota and they ask me to change my gas type to a more expensive one. This is ridiculous that i have to be driving my family around in a smelly truck.help
2003 4 runner v6 has loud ticking noise coming from engine conmpartment.i ran it by the dealership 1 week after purchase too see what the problem was.service manager said it was normal.approximatly 2months later rear seat was squeaking.made appointment with dealer had them fix the seat and diagnose the noise coming from engine compartment again.they fixed the seat and was told it was the injectors making the noise.i told the sevice manager that i was not happy with the quality.the 2002 4 runner is very quiet.i am planning a return trip to the dealer when i find enough information on the problem.
Engine makes a tick, tick, tick noise while running. Sounds like something knocking internally in the engine or an exhaust leak. Dealers repair shop says its normal. I don't believe them. I suspect a future problem or failure of a component.
When accelerating the engine makes an odd noise that sounds like there is an exhaust leak.i also intermittently have the "rotten egg" smell inside the vehicle.i took it to the dealer to have it examined and after the service manager drove the vehicle for 1.6 miles, he told me "they all sound like that."it seems odd to me that a vehicle designed to be so quiet would make such an alarming sound when accelerating.i also find it odd that, if there were no exhaust leak, with all the windows closed, the rotten egg smell of exhaust is still able to seep inside the passenger compartment.i have read other complaints stating customers should use a "better quality" of fuel.i have only used hess and mobil 93 octane in the 3 weeks that i've owned the vehicle.i assume this is a good quality gasoline, but if toyota feels there is a better quality gasoline which will make resolve these problems, i will be happy to use specifically the brand they recommend.
2003 toyota 4-runner v6 limited generates this unusual (tick, tick, tick) engine noise especially when accelerating. It sounds like a loose part in the engine block. This noise is especially noticeable when the 4-runner, driven by my wife, accelerates by me or when i drive with the window open next to a wall. Will this noise affect engine performance and shorten engine life? very concerned customer.
When engine is cold the belts make a loud screeching noise until the car warms, then the car make a ticking sound.truck is a v6 model and has been in for this repair 4 times, dealer says toyota is aware of the problem and does not have the proper solution yet, they say it has to do with the belts and tensioner set up.unacceptable response from toyota. *nlm
Consumer states that vehicle smells like gas from inside of vehicle. Dealer notified.
My 2003 4runner v6 limited generates this unusual engine noise especially when accelerating. My observations include a possible loss in power and affects engine performance, and possibly the longevity of the engine. I took it to a second toyota dealer where it was immediately recognized but a solution is yet to be determined since the v6 4.0 is a new engine. Currently, i wait for a toyota technician from the factory to examine the engine. Meanwhile, i continue to drive the vehicle and i am afraid that i am doing more harm to it's life expectancy. What steps can i take to accelerate the process since i feel that i am being given the runaround. I have been a faithful toyota customer as this is my 3rd 4runner, and have never experience anything like this. Many thanks. *nlm
Engine belt squeaks.has been replaced once and adjusted another time.squeak returned for third time with under 2000 miles on vehicle. *nlm
We purchased a 2003 toyota 4runner in march 2003 of this year from power toyota cerritos.from the first week of driving to the current date, the exhaust emits a sulfur odor during regular as well as hard acceleration.the odor is especially noticeable when the rear window is rolled down.currently we have over 5,000 miles on the vehicle and have confronted the tustin toyota dealership where we have had it serviced a couple of times.we receive the same response everytime that it is normal and due to the gasoline or the catalytic converter needs to "burn in".since ca has the strictest emission laws, i'm sure the gas is the least of our worries.i read on alldata.com that there is a tsb (eg003-03) for a sulfur smell, however there is no specific data on it.i have read hundreds of complaints on this issue on sites like edmunds.com, http://www.4x4review.com/discussions/toyota/default. Asp, and other countless sites.dealerships seem to deny the problem exist.although it currently is not a safety risk, why wait to find out?my wife and i enjoy everything else about the vehicle, but this nuisance is beginning to overshadow our view of toyota's quality.
I have become rather fed up with the sulfur smell problem on my 03' v8 4runner. I have read numerous complaints here, edmunds, and other websites on this topic and see anecdotal evidence of some people pursuing legal recourse. Other than one specific case in florida, i cannot find any other evidence of successfully making a lemon law case with the sulfur smell problem.i am in kansas and have been instructed by toyota that i have to go to arbitration.....and if i am not mistaken, this is also required prior to attempting a lemon lawsuit.i have three kids, one of which has a sulfur allergy in addition to my wife having a documented allergy. Frankly, i have been nauseated by this smell on a number of instances. Now at 10 mos. Of ownership, 7500 miles, trying every grade and brand of gas reasonably available, 2 dealer complaints, and 2 toyota corporate complaints....i am not only disappointed at toyota's shifting of blame....but now i am at a loss on what can be done to have toyota recognize an obvious design flaw in the current 4runner model. Toyota blames the problem on bad gas....don't think so...i have tried every grade from every station near my house. It has been happening since day 1 of ownership. Have i researched this to figure out why it happens....absolutely. When toyota says it is not their fault.....i guess i wonder why they designed the vehicle to have rear vents that pull exhaust gas into the cabin. This is exactly why it happens.here is my point....sulfur smell from the exhaust...ok, i'm good with that. This is the case with the higher sulfur content mixes that are currently available. But should it be reasonable that i have to inhale it inside the cabin? now how is that the fault of the gasoline industry.....does that have anything to do with the sulfur content of the locally available gasoline? furthermore, if i am smelling sulfur.....i am also inhaling carbon monoxide....gee, that seems real healthy. Please help.
Strong rotten odor/sulfur smell from vehicle when accelerating regardless if windows are up or down.
Consumer states while drivingat any speed, there was a strong smell of chemical fumes in the passenger compartment. Thedealer had inspectedvehicle, and was unable to duplicate or correct the problem.the dealer duplicated the problem and said that it was not acceptable.the right front wheel center had faded. *scc
Foul fumes enter cabin upon acceleration.this occurs with high octane gas or without high octane gas.only use 93 octane, but due to several other complaints tried lower octane and strong odor continued.these fumes enter cabin with all windows closed, air ventilation on recirculation and with air conditiong/heat off.makes breathing very difficult and become light headed or headache.this is not just a "smell" but literal gagging fumes.
I bought a 2003 4-ruuner sport edition withthe v-8 in august, 2003. Ever since i bought the 4-runner, there has been a strong rotten egg smell coming from the exhaust. It happens during acceleration or highway driving. The dealership inspected my 4-runner and said there was no problem. I then had the service writer ride with me to prove the rotten egg smell. I am afraid the exhaust gases getting into the car could create medical problems. I also wonder if my 4-runner will pass emissions inspections and i will be told to have it fixed before i can get a new sticker to drive. All indications is that toyota has known of this problem and has decided to pretend it does not exist.
After a few weeks of ownership the consumer noticed that the cabin would fill up with sulfur dioxide fumes.*phthese fumes have caused respiratory issues for the children that ride in the vehicle.
We have owned the '03 4-runner for a couple of months and we have consistently experienced a "rotten egg, sulfur / ammonia type smell that has yet to subside.we have tried using exxon, sunoco, and shell 89-93 octane and the smell still persists.it is more apparent with the rear window down, but definitely exists with all windows up.the smell is choking and causes great difficulty to breath.it seems to be caused by moderate acceleration.*ph
The consumer smelled strong chemical fumes in the passenger compartment, which seemed to be coming from the exhaust.
Terrible sulfur smell on acceleration of 2003 4runner 6 cylinder sport.most noticeable when the rear window is down.complained to dealer twice.told it was the gas i was using twice.tried numerous different brands of gas with no improvement.i don't believe any of this.there must be something wrong with the catalytic converter or another exhaust component.wondering if the exhaust smell could contain carbon monoxide! *nlm
Ltr fm christine idland (nj) re a problem with her 2003 toyota 4-runner, it emits a pungent odor when she presses the accelerator; reply attn derek decosmo/haddon heights office.the nj oep ran test on the vehicle which determined that when the consumer accelerated the carbon monoxide levels inside the vehicle became elevated.this occurred whether the windows were opened or closed.
2003 v8 4 runner emits rotten egg smell, primarily during quick acceleration. Was told by dealer to use higher grade of gasoline. Have tried higher grades of gas in the past and this does not always help. Toyota does not see this as a vehicle problem.*la
I have a 2003 toyota 4runner and have had a strong sulfur smell inside the vehicle when accelerating to higher speeds.this smell is extremely irritating and this problem appears to be happening more frequently.toyota reps say its the gas, but my 2001 toyota sienna has never done this, even though the same gas is purchased from the same source.judging by all the similar complaints i've read toyota has a problem that is either being mis-identified, or ignored.one toyota service man informed me that the 2003 4runner has a new catalytic converter.seems logical to look into that area first.
Dear auto safety,i purchased a 2003 toyota 4 runner in november 2002. This vehicle omits a sulfur smell that is easily detectable and horrible to have to smell when driven. It plain stinks. It stinks with all windows up. It stinks worse with the side windows or sunroof open. I complained to the dealer the day after purchasing the vehicle. I have brought the 2003 4runner to the dealer numerous times and emailed complaints about the sulfur smell to toyota usa to address the fact emmssons were entering the cabin. I even met with a regional tech from toyota usa on two occasions. Each time toyota failed to remedy the problem of emissions entering the cabin of the 2003 4runner. The sulfur smell being omitted into the the cabin is aweful to breath for not only myself, but anyone else traveling with me. I have no idea what health hazard the sulfur smell poses or what other emissions must be entering the cabin. I have been complaining to toyota for almost one year about this problem, and recently i learned the issue of emissions entering the cabins of other the 2003 4runner is being widely reported by other 2003 toyota 4runner owners. Toyota has failed to remedy this design defect with me, or address the health/safety issue of emmissions entering the cabin with me. The 2003 toyota 4runner is defective and should be recalled to effectively correct the fact that emissions are entering the cabin of the vehicle. In addition, toyota has been firm in their position that the vehicle is operating correctly, they are covering up a known defect and need to be held accountable. I would appreciate the help of auto safety in bringing this to the attention of toyota and to any other agency that should be involved in order for toyota to acknowledge and accept the responsibilty to correct the known defect of emissions entering the cabin of the 2003 toyota 4runner. Thank you and best regards, bill valentine.
Exhaust entering passenger cabin whether windows are closed or not. Sustained, overpowering sulfur odor when this occurs.*ph
While driving exhaust fumes entered the passenger cabin of the vehicle. Dealer could not duplicate or determine the cause of the problem.
There is a strong sulfur smell inside our 2003 toyota 4 runner sport edition when we drive.it is hard to breathe at times.our concern is that it is dangerous to our health.are we also getting carbon monoxide? toyota dealer told us there is no fix other than to try different gasoline.we have two other vehicles on the same gas with absolutely no smell. We are at a loss as to what to do.suggestions?toyota gave us a copy of a technical service bulletin dated 2/24/03 on sulfur odor from exhaust.obviously, they are aware of this and are doing nothing.
Rotten-egg like smell coming from the exhaust.told by my dealership to try different gas because of sulfate content in the gas currently using is too high.i have been to 4 different gas stations, it is starting to get a little ridiculous.
Sulfer exaust fumes entering cabin.occurs at various times.spoke to dealer and manufacturer; both blame gas.my concern is that the fumes are getting into the cabin area.
We bought a new 4runner in may 2003 and we noticed a rotten egg sulfur smell.at first i brushed it off thinking it was the outdoors, however the smell is still present. *nlm
Consumer noticed strong chemical gas coming from the exhaust tail and absorb by the rear window gate. Dealer stated well don't open that window.
Rotten egg smell from exhaust when hatch back window down for interior air circulation. Believe the cause is length and positioning of exhaust pipe.
Rotten egg/sulfur smell/exhaust entering cabin of vehicle even if windows are up.have had problem since purchase of vehicle in aug,2003.
My husband purchase a 2003 4 runner for me and while driving i have had a strong smell of rotten eggs in the car which has cause headaches;stomachaches as well as blur of vision. It not only comes through the windows while down but also through the ventsand more so while my air conditioner is on .
I am experiencing a repeated chemical sulfur odor in my vehicle cabin on even moderate acceleration.the smell is simply overwhelming.the windows are up, the sunroof is closed, and the air conditioner is set to recirculate.i understand from thousands of other posts on the internet that toyota claims this is a gasoline issue, but i have recently traveled across the country from miami to seattle, and have experienced this problem throughout the trip.i personally would not care about the exhaust smell if it was outside the vehicle, but with all the windows up, with the sunroof closed, and with the air conditioning on recirculate, it scares me that substantial amount of exhaust fumes are entering the cabin of my vehicle on a regular basis.only the sulfur smell on moderate acceleration is clue to a larger problem.i fear that something is very, very wrong with this toyota product.i request that the nhtsa begin investigating this immediately before someone dies inside their toyota 4runner.*la
2003 4runner se v8: during accleration, i have exhaust gases entering the passenger compartment.toyota confirmed that the v8 is mostly affected due to the larger displacement engine. Also, per toyota, the exhasut gases are entering from a vent located on the left rear of the vehicle.however, toyota insists that this problem is due to the fuel.i have taken this to arbitration and was denied, even thought toyota freely admits to the problem.based on the outcome, i have asked toyota to state that this is a safe condition and was also denied.
The vehicle was distributing excessive amounts of sulfur dioxide gas from the exhaust pipe .the gas was coming through the air vents and making the occupants sick.*nlm
Exhaust fumes seeped into the passenger cabin while driving.
Toxic sulfur/rotten egg smell in cabin of automobile
This is a continual problem. Whenever we have the rear window down, there is a terrible odor that permeates the automobile.it makes me nausea and gives me terrible headaches.the dealer said we should open one of the side windows.i put a date, because the site would not accept this unless i did.*la
This vehicle fills the cabin constantly with a "sulfur" or rotten egg smell.i have changed gas brands multiple times.*la
2003 toyota 4runner v6 limited - large amounts of exhaust fumes in the cabin.exhaust fumes are experienced regardless of adjustments to environmental controls, including when the air conditioner is running and recirculation on.exhaust fumes appear to be from the 4runner.all occupants become nauseous and experience significant eye irritation.i have significant concerns for the safety and health of my family, short and long term.i have discussed this issue with two local toyota dealers.they are unable to fix the problem and appear to be avoiding the specific issue of exhaust fumes in the cabin.they try to redirect the issue to the sulfur smell that the vehicle emits.i don't care about the sulfur smell, but i have real concerns about the exhaust fumes in the cabin. *la
My problem dates back to 8-9 months ago. I bought my 4runner in nov.2002, brand new. After a couple of months my car started to make this sulfer/ammonia smell, every day, every time i accelerate or go up a hill. I have brought in the car 4-5 times to various dealers, everyone said theres nothing wrong, finally toyota escondido smelled the smell and informed me that toyota is well aware of the situation but theres nothing they are going to do about it. I have not had to spend any $ yet, but the smell is enough to drive you crazy. I am shocked that toyota is taking that approach. I pay way too much for my 4 runner to be so unhappy!!!!!please help!!!!!!
I occasionally have sulfur smelling fumes from the exhaust in the vehicle even when the windows are closed.the dealership told me to switch brands of gasoline.i am less concerned about the smell than the idea that exhaust fumes are entering the car with the windows closed.*nlm
Strong chemical fumes in passenger compartment with or without the windows being closed. *mr the consumer was concerned if the fumes could cause any health problems and what was being done to rectify the problem. *scc
After a very frustrating and disappointing experience with a gmc suv we bought a 2003 toyota sr5 4runner.up to this point we have been pleased with it.however, an ammonia/sulfur odor has been noted inside the cabin when driving and causes extreme irritation and a burning feeling in the throat and lungs of anyone in the vehicle. They all immediately complain.we have never experienced anything quite like this.we checked this site to see if others have had the same complaint....they have.we talked with our dealer about it and were told it was the nature of the fumes given off from the fuel.we believe a wind deflector/rear spoiler may help this problem but also learned from our dealer that one is not made (yet) for this model 4runner.this physical irritation and burning felt while driving is totally unacceptable and we hope more complaints filed will cause enough concern to get something done.either with the fuel or a product to eliminate these odors from entering the cabin.*nlm
Exhaust odors enter cabin under middle, heavy acceleration, even with windows closed. Strong choking hydrogen sulfide, rotten egg smell, lingers in the cabin for a minute or more each time. Exhaust makes mechanical valve train noise, sounds like pinging or sticking hydraulic lifters on moderate acceleration.
I have experienced a strong sulfur odor in my new 2003 toyota 4 runner since i purchased the vehicle. This smell has not gone away, and in fact has gotten even worse. I use the vehicle for towing purposes also and the smell is unbearable when towing something. I have retunred the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions and have been advised that there is nothing hat can be done. The dealer keeps trying to advise that it the fule choice that i make, this cannot be true since i travel within three states and rarely fule at the same sights, and utilize a variety of different brands also, and since this problem appears to be nationwide how can the dealer insist that it is the fuel? i have gotten to the point that i do not want this new vehicle, its a great vehicle toher than this problem, but when you cannot ride in the vehicle due to the smell, headaches, and when cleints get in ...its down right embarrasssing !

The sulpher smell/carbon monoxide that comes into the cab of my '03 4runner v8, is extremely unacceptable. This is my 4th toyota in the past 6 years and i have never been more dissapointed with my vehicle. Took it to 4 dealers to all say to me that it's a gas grade issue. I'm tired of toyota not standing behind their product and helping loyal customers out with annoying issues.at the very least, offer an altenative system.
Rotten egg sulfur smell in my 2003 toyota 4 runner.very bad when any window is down, just bad when all windows are up.dealer suggested different gas(didn't work), and replaced catalytic converter (didn't work).this problem is giving me and my family headaches while riding in the vehicle.

Exhaust system emits a sulphur smell that comes into the seating area
Strong sulfur smell will driving the car, the smell is strong and times can be hard to breath.the smell does definitely orginate from my 2003 fourrunner.
I own a 2003 toyota 4runner and have been experiencing the sulfur/rotten egg smell for several months.it is intermittent and seems to occur most frequently upon acceleration.the smell can get quite bad at times, and has caused my eyes to burn and other passengers to feel nauseous.my 3 year old son has complained several times that it makes his tummy hurt.taking it in to toyota has not helped - they state that toyota is aware of the problem and is taking a look at it.hopefully they will look quicker and find a solution.i have owned several toyotas (this is my second 4runner in a row) and have always found the cars and service to be exceptional.however, this has soured me on my wonderful 4runner and i will most definitely look at other suvs - perhaps sooner rather than later now.
Exhaust fumes apparently entering cabin of vehicle.smell of sulfur very strong even when all windows are up.
Consumer complained about asulfur smell throughout the interior of the vehicle. Consumer took vehicle back to dealership, butdealer was unable toresolve theproblem.
After suffering through months of illness caused by a noxious smell, we have researched and found that our v8 toyota 4 runner's catalytic converter emits oxides of sulfur (so2, hs2, etc.) on the matter of sulfur dioxide alone, we found that according to the epa, so2 contributes to respiratory illness, particularly in children and the elderly, and aggravates existing heart and lung diseases. People with asthma are particularly affected by peak levels of so2. As i am pregnant, have asthma, and use this vehicle to transport my 4-year-old on a daily basis, i am deeply concerned by gresham toyota's refusal to address this potentially hazardous health situation.*la
At certain times i have a sulfur/exhaust smell that enters the vehicle. It is intermittent, i thought maybe it was exhaust from vehicles in front of me emitting bad fumes, but it has also happened when no other vehicles are around me. It hasn't lasted long 30 seconds to a minute and it's gone. But when the smell comes it's very overpowering, making me want to gag at times.
Car emits a sulfur type smell, whether ventalation system is on or not, and whether windows are up or down.smell is noxious and makes me feel ill.has happened at least 10-15 times over the course of 5 months with this vehicle.
I own a 2003 toyota 4 runner purchased in october of 2002.it emits a horrible rotten egg/sulphur smell into the cabin, windows up or down.has given my passengers headaches and nausea.tried the recommended gas upgrades, nothing works.this is a defect. Toyota should be made accountable.
I have a 2003 toyota 4 runner.i purchased the vehicle 1 1/2 months ago and currently have 3000 miles on the vehicle.when i have the rear window down i smell a strong odor.the odor has an acid ammonia like smell.the odor is so strong at times that it takes my breath away.at times, the odor also enters my vehicle when my windows are rolled up.the stench is so strong that passengers in my car have noticed it (windows rolled up).due to the above i am very concerned for my health.i have brought the problem to the attention of my dealership (service and the operations director).service checked the car and both service and the operations director are telling me that it is the gas i am using.they are telling me that i need to use sunoco gas (or a premium gas company, but recommend sunoco) and that i need to use an octane above 90.i am on my 4th tank of sunoco 93 octane gas and the problem still continues!!i have been in contact with the nj state department of environmental protection, bureau of motor vehicle inspection and maintenance.my car has tested high for carbon monoxide with the window open and closed and with my circulation vent on.i am currently waiting for the report from dmv.this situation is absolutely unacceptable on any car especially this $40,000 car. This problem has been ongoing and there does not appear to be an end in sight!toyota has a wonderful reputation but in this situation it is quite clear they are hiding behind gas companies.what can i do to get toyota to correct this problem????please help!!!
Passenger compartment fills with exhaust fumes (rotten egg smell) mainly when in motion with the back window down.
Emission system problem, the catalytic converteris producing a gastric smell which is unbearable.also, causes the driver to get sick while driving.
The exhaust smell from the truck has a horrific and sickening smell.i have not been driving the vehicle due to this issue.it has made me sick to my stomach at times and my wife and kids can not stand the continuous smell either.i am very upset with this and would like a refund of my purchase price.toyota sent out a tsb regarding the smell saying it was the gasoline (poor) that people use.wrong!i use amoco and texaco only.

In december of 2002, we purchased a 2003 toyota 4runner sport. Almost immediately we noticed a strong sulphur smell leaking into the cabin when the vehicle was in motion. We took it to back to peformance toyota where we purchased it and had it checked out. The maintenance manager said that the vehicle checked out fine, handed us a copy of a service bulletin #eg003-03 and suggested we change gas. We tried every gas at every gas station we could find and it only got worse. My wife had been using the vehicle to car pool our two daughters, along with other children, home from school. One of the children got physically ill (we later found out that he suffers from migrains, and the odor was triggering his attacts), so we had to pull our daughters out of the car pool. In order to limit my daughters' exposure to sulphur dioxide, i agreed to use the toyota and let my wife use my dakota to take the girls to/from school (it doesn't stink). After driving the toyota to work for close to a year now, i have experienced health problems and have recently been diagnosed with asthma by my physician (which i've never had before). My asthma medication costs me $158 per month and i have researched causes of asthma, and have found that this sulphur smell is a possible trigger for it.i have since purchased a used vehicle to drive back and forth to work, and the $37,000 toyota sits in the garage because no one can stand to drive it.help!!!!!
Terrible sulphur smell in the cabin.windows are always up due to 3 of 4 members having asthma.makes all passengers sick to stomachs and headaches.want full purchase price back for this vehicle.cannot drive anylonger.very upsetting from a toyota product.have been to dealer 3 times.
Rotten egg (sulfur) smell with carbon monoxide (co) in the cabin is making passengers sick! (poisoned) i just did a little research on this problem and have learned that 60 complaints have been submitted to the nhtsa for this sulfur smell. However what everyone is focusing on is the smell of rotten egg. This is disgusting and potentially dangerous but that is it is not what will kill you. The carbon monoxide(co)is the real danger because it is without odor and deadly it is also getting into the car by the same means as the obvious egg smell. I was so concerned that i contacted a enviromental company who came for a ride along in my 2003 sr5 4runner. This ride proved to me that(co)is indeed entering the cabin and alarmed the tech who came along with a (co)tester. At one point he yelled "close the f@#%@%& rear window". I saw the readings go off the charts depending on the configuration of the windows.i did not pay for this test as they were being kind enough to just see if i had any (co)entering the cabin. This was enough for me! i have since contacted toyota customer service and i am waiting to hear from the regional rep from fl. Another option for people to find out on their own is to go to the home depot and buy a (co) tester. This can be plugged into the 110 outlet in the glove box. I did and i do not drive with the rear window down at all any longer and have postponed trips of longer than 50 miles to reduce exposer to this harmful chemical. This is a serious problem that may be corrected by changing the location of the tail pipe to vent to the side of the vehicle. I hope this will get the people (nhtsa) who are supposed to be professionals that protect us "to wake up." if someone else could do a similar test in their state we could have more ammunition to fight toyota. I have found out that the epa company would do a complete test with report and all for around $340.00. I am going to see if the service rep would do this but i doubt it.
My 2003 toyota 4 runner has an extremely strong smell of sulphur in the cabin when i drive with the windows open.i have reported this 3 times to my dealer, and on the third time, they acknowledged that the smell was from the fuel.i have owned many cars, and never experiencedsuch a smell, and i have compared to other 4runner owners, all of whom have the same situation.the smell is immediately noticeable.
Rear window is open and exhaust smoke fumes will come inside of window while traveling.

2003 toyota 4runner: jack and equipment are not safe and suitable for this type of truck.i have had to use the jack equipment 2 times to change flats, the first time the equipment does not raise the front of the car high enough to change the tire and the wand used to jack it up bent in half.the second time the wand bent again and the screws to connect the wand were stripped causing an unsafe place to change the tire.the equipment is not suitable for this size truck.
I purchased a brand new sports edition 2003 4 runner in july of 2003. There is a sulfur smell emanating from the vehicle at all times. When i complained to toyota i was told the odor was caused by the gas i use. I have never had this problem before and toyota just washes their hands of it. I was given a paper which purports to be a technical service bulletin. It states: feb 24 2003 - some owners of toyota vehicles may experience a sulfur like or rotten egg odor from the exhaust system. Sulfur is a natural component of crude oil from which gasoline is refined and the amount of sulfur can be decreased through the refining process. The amount of sulfur in fuel sold in california is regulated; however, gasoline sold in other states can have a higher sulfur content. Sulfur content also varies considerably between gasoline brands and locations. Applicable vehicles all models repair procedure: a sulfur odor emitted from the vehicles tailpipe does not necessarily indicate there is an issue with the vehicles running condition but is most likely directly related to the fuel. If vehicles is exhibiting an excessive sulfur odor the following checks should be performed if the mil light is on check for dtc's and repair as necessary information trouble is found after performing the above check recommend the customer try a different source of fuel. Replacement of oxygen sensors, air/fuel ratio sensors or catalytic converters will not reduce the odor and therefore not be considered for warranty(sounds like a cop-out to me)toyota should look for a solution.*la
Consumer receivedrecall 03v146000.called the dealer to arrange an appointment for repairs.dealer stated we didn't have that part yet and we didn't know anything about that recall.
2003 4 runner..... 12,000 miles, running on amaco sliver gas, still smells as rotten asever...been through hell with the scott clark toyota in charlotte and gaston (north carolina).....they are all liars!!!! saying it's the first they ever heard of such a thing.....filed reports and contacted owners..called everyone...even those jerks couldn't mail me lemon law papers etc. I will never own another toyota automobile...something should be done, a class lawsuit with enough people may get something accomplished or at least my $39,000 back. The smell of sulpher stinks so bad that it's to hard to even sale the piece of junk.
The consumer contacted the dealer to make an appointment for a recall # 03v146000 repairsconcerningfuel pulsation damper. Consumer went for the appointment on may 27,2003 and the parts were not available.dealer wassuppose to call when the parts became available.as of today the parts were not available.
Vibration in steering.dealer cannot fix. Went to arbitration and lost due to biased investigator and policy that would not allow arbitrator to drive the vehicle.two other dealers acknowledge the vibration but say it is designed that way!--also mileage computerinaccurate and excessive wind noise.
I purchased my 2003 4 runner last july and almost immediately noticing a sulfur smell.i was told by the dealer that it was the fuel.i continued to complain and was finally admitted to by toyota that this is a problem with their "metal components" and the blending of the fuel.the odor is so strong in my car that clients are complaining and asking about septic issues.
Previously submitted as :10060723 ,ammending dealer, purchase date and incident date:dashboard gauges, escpecially speedometer and fuel gauge, are difficult or impossible to read in daytime.

All four of my door locks have stopped working with the automatic system.each required a new lock actuator to be installed on each door.the failures occurred at 26,598 (7/16/04) - front driver, 50,327 (6/10/05) - rear right, 67,878 (12/30/05) - front right, 81,435 (05/2006) - rear driver.if a user does not notice the failure, the potential exists for children in the backseat to open the door - as the driver believes that the door is locked, but it is not.
My wife was driving her 2003 toyota 4runner limited,v8 when the transmissionpopped out of gear.she had it in 4d gear for normal driving.she pulled over andput it in 4d gear again and it popped out a second time.the check engine light alsoappeared. She pulled over again and turned off the air conditioner and she proceeded to drive to her destination without the gear popping out.she calledour son to pick up the car to take it to the dealer for service.they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. They said it had to happen while they were testing the car to fix the problem but they couldn't repeat the same thing that happened when my wife was driving it. This situation could be potentially dangerous.where do we go from here, who do we contact? my wife's work number is 412-875-1481
When coming to a stop and/or accelerating from a stop the car will jerk forward with a thud.sometimes two or three thuds are felt and heard.the dealer witnessed this problem and ourisman toyota in chantilly, va replaced the transmission at 14,500 miles.the problem seemed to go away for a while.i returned to the same dealer with the same complaint at 32,000 miles and they replaced the drive shaft.i returned again on 11/30/04 and the service manager witnessed the same problem within 200 feet of driving.the service manager indicated he believes this is normal (even though this was not a problem till about 12,000 miles).he is going to discuss this with the toyota rep who is in town this week.i
Gated shifter, on 2003 toyota 4 runner, allows you to shift the vehicle past neutral (into reverse or even park) while driving, with out depressing the brake pedal. If you push straight up on the shifter it locks it out (against the staggered plastic of the gated shifter). But if you accidentally hit the shifter on an angle, it can slide past neutral and into reverse or even park!
This condition could be related to item 2.this condition started last winter and is getting worse.)after being at a stop and releasing the brakes, i get a hard shake/thud from the driveline/brakes.this occurs in 90% of stops/starts.(e.g., if it was normal, it would do it all the time to some degree.)there is no metal on metal noise, just the shake/thud like the brakes are releasing too hard or the driveline has too much lash in it.(condition is worse if you come to a hard stop, before starting again.)2)sometimes (about 20% of the time) after coming to a complete stop at a stop sign or red light, the transmission goes into first gear hard and/or the converter/torsen differentialis unlocking/locking incorrectly.it will actually rock the vehicle forward.sometimes it gives the same sensation as in item 3.(actually, on a few occasions i get item 2 problem followed by an item 1 problem.
The gear shifter was able to go from neutral to reverse.phwhile driving from 0-45 mph, the shifter was in the fourth gear, and had shifted to drive.the consumer accident's pushed the shifter to park while the vehicle was in motion.the consumer felt that most vehicle's have a shift lock between neutral and reverse when the vehicle is motion.scc
While driving can shift into reverse without applying pressure to the brake pedal.vehicle was taken to the dealer. Dealer stated tha vehicle has a gated shifter, and itwas normal for that to happen. Consumer concerned that there was no locking feature on the shifter.
Vibration in drivetrain of 2003 4runner (awd-v8). I do not see my original complaint listed in the nhtsa complaints, submitted october 2003. I am writing to let allconsumers know that toyota usa was forced to buy back my 4runner on nov 4th 2003 thru the new vehicle lemon law in florida,(due to this drivetrian vibration).
When coming to a stop or even when stopped, a loud thud is heard and felt as if torque converter is still down shifting. When brakes released, thud is heard and felt again as car accelerates. Dealer says brakes are fine! i'm concerned as this is not a normal sound and recently car actually felt like it wanted to move forward as thud was felt and heard. (this is unrelated to the car wanted to lurch forward at stop when a/c is on!)
Vibration in steering wheel ,floorboards, driveline and droning noise. This is an update to id# 10060725. Lexus of toyota has announced a tsb for the gx 470 which has the same mechanicals as the toyota 4runner. Thistsb addresses the indicated problem that is in both vehicles. It is :"steering st004-04" "steering vibration and driveline vibration/drone". Unfortunately the fix can only be applied to the lexus vehicles per dealer.
2003 toyota 4runner v8/awdw/ under 5,000 milesat highway speeds there is a vibration and low frequency "roaring" noise that appears to come from the from axle/differential. Sound ceases when coasting.noise and vibration was noticed within first 500 miles of ownership and is increasingly getting worst. Thought to be tires which were rotated and did not solve problem.dealer analyzed and stated this is a normal working noise from the differential which has aluminum parts.noise is getting louder. Concern there is a defect and safety issue.
Have had the vehicle for a month now.i went back to the dealer after the first week with noticeable vibration in the steering wheel and the vehicle in general from approx. 45 mph and above.dealer balanced wheels.returned again another week later with same symptoms.dealer again attemped to balance tires and analyzed rims, speed balance, etc. And determined it was the tires.after the song and dance about the dealer being unable to replace the tires without a long drawn out process, i was directed to the local bridgestone dealer for tire replacement.had tires replaced the following tuesday.same symptoms re-occurred after a few days.back to the dealer a third time this past friday.re-balanced the new tires again, service manager drove it afterwords and said everything was fine.left that afternoon on a trip, and the symptoms re-occured again.have had enough !i am filing a lemon law notice to toyota this week with one last chance to repair.if unsuccesful, will be filing for arbitrationto receive a refund.

Drivetrain vibration felt in steering column and floorboards at approx 1200rpm to 2000rpm. This is not to be confused with wheel shimmey due to tire or wheel imbalance. Service dealer indicates this is normal and will resolve itself with more mileage.
Vibration in steering, most prevalent around 70 mph.started at 15,000 miles.rebalanced tires 3 times and dealer determined that oem tires were bad. Tried new tires and the problem persists.believed to be same as lexus gx 470 problem with tsb fix st004-04.no toyota tsb yet.
There is a whining noise comming from the front differential at all speeds, but noticeable mostly at 80 mph and hiogher.toyota aknowledged, but refuses to repair.also drivers seat is loose and comes out of place during emergency stopping.again toyota is aware, but refuses to correct.
2003 toyota limited 4-runner v8- awdfront-end vibration problemfirst presented the vibration problem at 5048 miles to my dealer the last week of august!it is mostly felt through the steering wheel and the accelerator and occurs at various speeds. There is also a droning noise associated with the vibration and is most notable under load. They tried balancing the wheels with no improvement. They agreed the problem was there and notified corporate. Their technical staff had them remove the front axels and retest. The vibration, which started at 22 mph, went to 32mph 42, 55, and 62mph now disappeared! the dealer was advised that there was an angle problem with the front drive shaft. A week later a technical representative met with me and mentioned that several similar vehicles in phoenix had the same problem. He suggested it probably would take about two months to get a fix.he felt that toyota would probably just replace the whole unit rather than putting in different parts.two months later i talked to the tech. Rep. Again and he mentioned that the engineering group had determined the problem to be interferences in the spider gear assembly in the front differential, they were trying to correct the condition with thrust washer shims and other things. They claimed that the problem was not a safety factor; i wonder though what would happen if the front end were to freeze-up since its in 4wd all the time!i have presented my claim to the toyota customer support group. I have called them regularly once a month and have had no success at finding what their schedule is for the fix, --only to say we are working on it and your dealer will notify you. ive since heard from my dealer staff that they have a number of lexus gx470's as well as 2004s 4-runners involved. Im beginning to feel that they have so many vehicles involved it might be a long time before we see a fix! i haul a pop-up trailer and does it magnify the problem!
2003 4 runner. Bought 8/1/03 with 63 actual miles. 1st owner.vehicle vibrates at 75 mph and becomes severe rumble at 80 to 83 mph.dealership explained the problem as the tires. Tires remounted. Rumble still exists.tires then replaced. Rumble still exists. I called toyota customer service hot line, received claim # 2003-1212 0940, which happens to be the actual date and time of call also.i am still in wait for a solution to this problem that toyota acknowledged has been happening with several 4 runners.please help.wayde
I presently have my 2003 4 runner v8 limited in for the second time in less then a year for air suspension problems. In both cases the air suspension stays in the fully inflated position. They replaced the compressor the first time in (21 days to get parts), and this time they tell me it?s the air release portion of the compressor. Which means their replacing the compressor again (7 days and counting waiting for parts).i also had the vehicle in for a wobbling sound, the problem was a driveshaft that was installed backwards on the assembly line. Toyota indicated that this occurs once in a while during assembly.
From the date of purchase thered has been a loud "thud" noise when releasing the brake pedal.this does not occur on a continual or predictable basis.the toyota dealership examined the 4runner and didn't find the brakes to be faulty; however the sound and a surge are still presentit reminds me of the "thud" sound that was inherent in the t-100 pick-up truck when it was started in reverse.i have an automatic transmission in my vehicle and wonder if failure is imminent there or in the drive shaft.in either case this is an obvious flaw and must be addressed by toyota.my daughter owned a 2002 toyota pick-up truck and said it made the same sound for as long as she owned it.
Rear center seat belt crosses over both right and left rear passenger seat belts when all belts are buckled.this makes buckling left and right seat belts extremely difficult when center belt is buckled, especially when child seat is installed.
03 4 runner driver's seat rattles in base of seat. This is a manual adjustment seat.*la
Lumbar support in driver seat "pop" and adjust by itself from selected lumbar position.occurs when driving and when parked.dealer states "plastic clips" that hold the s shaped spring secure are faulty.
Driver's seat keeps slipping when increasing/decreasing/stopping. It is a manual seat and dealer informed me that this was nothing to be concerned about and that there had been other complaints. It is a noticable shift in seat position. Dealer suggested that this is a typical "manual" seat reation. I find this difficult to be comfortable with as i have never had this situation with other vehicles with manual seats. Please notify me via email your findings. Thanksbarbara christian.
The front driver seat on my 4 runner does not properly lock into place.the seat moves forward and backward on the track in certain positions under braking and/or acceleration.at first the dealer said they would replace the track, but since then they have decided to deny that there is even a problem.the regional manager dropped the case off of their records without even trying to solve the problem.they said it made their averages look bad.
I have noticed movement in my seat when braking and accelerating.movement does not happen all the time, but does happen often. I have informed my dealership, but hey have not found the problem while the car was parked.i still have the movement problem and i intend to document the problem on my work order when i go in for my next servicing, in case i need the documentation for lemon law.hopefully it will not come to that.

While driving the consumer noticed that the seats height was not adjusted properly.the consumer contacted the dealer who attempted to repair the problem several times but was unable to permanently correct .
The driver's seat for my 2003 toyota 4 runner sport v8, which has a manual adjustment for the seat base fore-to-aft position, has too much play when locked into position. My concern is that the movement, or play, will over time compromise the locked position of the seat base. Previous owned cars like a 2001 volkswagen jetta and 1996 toyota rav4, which both had manual seat base adjustments, did not have this issue. I believe all >= 2003 toyota 4runners with manual seat base adjustments have this issue - a local dealer showed me 2 4runners on the lot which also had the seat base movement when locked, and declared this issue "normal". I believe many other 4runner owners are experiencing this: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=676.
Front section of seat under legs has come loose.*nlm
The back lumbar of the drivers seat rattles and it moves when i accelerating or braking.
Manual seat of 2003 4 runner sport model continually retracts from elevated position. This makes it difficult to use the rear view mirror when driving. Since the seat lowers within 15-30 minutes depending on road surface the seat must be continously raised, creating another unsafe dirving situation. Service dealer indicates there is no solution to problem and it is "something i will have to live with"!!
Driver's seat backrest, moves or has a play making it unsafe to drive.
Driver's seat rocks back and forth while driving.it been to the dealership twice but they refuse to repair it.
Front drivers side seat rattles or moves about 1/2 inch when slowing down, going fast & going over bumps.
Driver seat was too loose and moved back and forthwhile driving, causing a distraction to the consumer. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Driver's seat moves back and forth while driving.dealership was informed but did not resolve the problem.*mr
The rear seat back rest on passenger side squeaks and makes a rattling noise.if the back rest is folded down the noise goes away. It seems to be the locking mechanism. Based on research on the internet, this seems to be a common problem.dealer offered to look at it.
Consumer statedrear seats did not lock in place. As a result, when applying brakes suddenly the seats came up.
Consumer states that while driving vehicle no warning they can smell strong wire fumes through out the vehicle. Sun-roof electronic jacket burned. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information. Ts
The brakes are inoperative. As a result, vehicle is hard to stop.
Brakesfailed at 10000 miles. Dealer stated that this was normal.
I purchased a new 2003 4 runnerfrom toms river toyota.all service of the vehicle performed there. Over a year ago we complained low a low brake pedal.dealer said nothing was defective.recently dealer recommended rear brake service.problem still not resolved.on last service visit the dealer advised me that toyota issued a service bulletin requiring a pad spacer being installed.but now due the mileage being over the 50000 mile warranty, dealer requires >$ 250.be paid by owner to repair this issue.no such service bulletins were found on this website search.
When braking at any speed the brake pedal goes to the floor, causing extended stopping distance.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Brake pedal goes al the way to the floor when sitting at a stop .the 4 runner has 3 masters and one complete power brake unit installed by toyota and i still have the problem, toyota stated it is normal.
I purchase a new toyota 4 runner from toyota world lakewood n j on 9/25/03 when i drove the truck home i notice something wrong with the brakes i went back to the dealer on 10/17/03 they took the truck for a test drive when he came back he said i need new rotor disc that they were warp.*la

Shimmy in steering wheel between 60 and 65 mph. Auto door down & up will not work. Noticed problems after purchased (4 miles on vehicle) dealer balanced tires and still had vibration. Will replace tires to see if this fixes problem. Replace window motor.*ph

Aafter the overnight temporature dropped befow freezing, both of my 2003 toyota 4 runner rear doors froze to their wheel wells due toa minor accumulation of mud in the wheel wells (less than 1/4 inch thick) where the door bottom extends. Although the doorlatches functioned properly, and the doors could be 'sprung' away from the frame at the top, the bottom remained frozen to the wheel well prohibitingopening. Emergency egrees would have been impossible.
I purchased my 2003 toyota 4 runner vehicle on july 31, 2003. Approximately 30 days after purchase, i began having trouble with a rattle or noise coming from the headliner / sunroof area of the vehicle. I took my vehicle back to the dealer on 08/29/2003, 10/14/2003, 11/25/2003 and 12/22/2003 to have this problem corrected but to date, the dealer has been unable to do so. Thus far, my vehicle has been out of service for a total of four days and the dealer has attempted to repair this problem four separate times and now they are asking me to bring the vehicle in for the fifth time to repair this problem.

Suspension is rough while driving at 65 mph or greater, causing the passengers to become nauseated by the motion of the vehicle. Dealer says there is noremedy for this problem.
After reaching 55 mph vehicle vibrated violently.
The driver was traveling 35mph,the vehicle started swaying from left to right. The rear shocksblew the seals. The vehiclewas unable to be moved and was towed to the residence.nitrousentertrises after market product.
Problem: steering whell vibration at speeds of 60mph and up. Purchased on 8/2/03. Returned to the delaer on 8/12/03 to have all tires balanced and a full alignment; problem still exists. Returned to dealer on 8/14/03 to have the tires speed matched to the rims. When i picked up my 4runner i was told the vibration was still present and that i should upgrade my tires from dunlop grandtrek at20 265/65/17 to michelin cross terain tires. The dealer offered to buy two tires and i would buy the remainig three (including spare) at $199.95 each with no guarantee that the michelins would solve the vibration problem. Left my 4runner and asked the dealer to contact the toyota representative for assiatnce to repair the vehicle. Toyota offered to buy another tire. I told the dealer that they and toyota should replace the tires at no cost.was told by the dealer customer relations manager that they ordered the dunlops instead of the michelns that are avaiable from the factory as original equipment. Cr manager checked with the dealers general manger who offered no further assiatance.now sitting in my garage with 456 miles on the odometer. Next step lemon law suit as car is not safe to drive at highway speeds.i was told by the dealer service representative and customer relations manager that they have had other 2003 4runner customers with the same complaint concerning the steering wheel vibration at highway speeds.
2003 toyota 4 runner trailer hitch came apart. When the trailer came apart it struck the vehicle in the rear.the trailer remained attached to the vehicle by the safety chains .the receiver ball slid out of the receiver of the hitch due to the clip coming off pin and pin falling out.
Problems concerning the manual on how to access the spare tire equipment on the 2003 toyota 4 runner.***no answer required***. *mrthe manual's direction and graphics were very different from how the consumer had to access the spare on his vehicle.the arm to the jack used to jack up the car required it to be screwed together and was not heavy enough gauge to jack up the consumer's suv.the jack did not rise high enough to remove the tire.the consumer believes the jack and tools provided to change the tire were inferior and ineffective.
I bought a new 2003 toyota 4 runner on 8-23-03. The vehicle was delivered to me with the "vsc track" warning light on. During the test drive, i inquired about the light and was told by the salesman that is was part of the traciton control system. I was led to believe that the light being on was a normal condition. The vehicle had 25 miles on the odometer when i took delivery. When i got the vehicle home and read the owners manual, i found that the light was not supposed to be on and that it was an indicator of a potential problem with the vsc system. The vsc system is a skid control system that monitors the vehicle and under certain conditions, modifies the vehicle performance by controling the throttle or brakes in an attempt to prevent skid, or loss of control of the vehicle. The vehicle has less than 1000 miles on it, and 3 repairs have been attempted by the dealer, none of which have fixed the problem. So far they have replaced the ecm, the steering wheel position sensor, and a disc which the steering wheel position sensor "reads" to determine the steering wheel position. The problem still exists and i am about to return the vehicle for a fourth attempt at repair.
The 4 runner has a loud squeal as start up. Once the car warms up the squealis a low, but still a wrong sound.
High levels of carbon dioxide is coming into the cabin of the vehicle. The manufacturer is aware of the problem but don't' have .fix.
The consumer experienced sudden acceleration on 3 separate occasions.......
Regarding my 2003 toyota 4-runner, limited, 4-wheel drive with a v-8 engine and 5 speed automatic transmission.since i've owned the vehicle (september 28, 2003) the engine has periodically accelerated suddenly by itself, while at a stop, such as at a stop light, with the ac on and the transmission in drive.sometimes this results in an abrupt acceleration similar to being hit by another car in the rear.if i didn't have my foot firmly on the brake in these instances, i would have shot into the intersection.this problem is not only a serious safety problem, but has to be doing damage to the transmission.i took it in for repair and as predictable the dealer said they found no problem.all they did was confirm its idle, they did not drive it in traffic.this is a serious problem and could result in a serious incident.i've noted other complaints have been made to nhtsa on the same problem.i believe this problem should be investigated before serious injuries are incurred by someone.
I was on an interstate highway going about 65 miles an hour when the car( 2003 toyota 4 runner) started to lose power and come to a complete stop without any warning within a minute. Since i was in the center lane and it was rush hour, it was impossible to get off the road, plus i had no power. Finally a police car pulled up behind me and had me turn off the car and then restart.i was able then to pull over with the officer's help to the shoulder of the road.the car was towed to a dealership and i was toldthe "transmission input speed sensor(p0717)" had to be replaced.this seems to be a large safety issue that a car would just shut down without any warning (especailly on an interstate highway).i would far rather to have damage to a transmission than to be hit in the rear at a high speed while i have no power.
While traveling on the highway without prior warning.the vehicle will suddenly accelerated.please fill in additional information dealer is aware of the problem.
The design flawof the gas pedal caused injury to the consumers right knee and lower back.*tc
When vehicle idled at a stop and the heater/ air conditioner was on the vehicle lurched forward without warning.the brake must be held down hard.*sc
The vehicle had been to the dealership on 3 occasions for an inoperative defroster system, the dealer was unable to rectify the problem.
Hvac blower fan failed after two years of ownership. Unfortunately vehicle mileage exceeds warranty period.dealer said that failure was due to not clearing snow from hood, thereby blocking air to fan.however, vehicle is garaged and not subject to elements.mechanic indicated that he had seen other similar failures and that they were due to seepage of water into blower housing and subsequent freezing.
No heat.4-runner was brought into dealer for service 3 times because blower not working, and dealer is now saying they are not sure how to fix.they are waiting to hear from corporate office on how to repair.we are told this is not an isolated problem and they are getting more of this in other 4-runners.they say moisture is getting into blower and in cold weather it freezes causing it not to work. So we are still waiting to see how they will fix this problem.
The driver side window blew out while the consumer was driving.the glass made scratches on the door. The manufacturer stated there were no complaints and the vehicle was out of warranty.
Rear window is open and exhaust smoke fumes will come inside of window while traveling.
Shimmy in steering wheel between 60 and 65 mph. Auto door down & up will not work. Noticed problems after purchased (4 miles on vehicle) dealer balanced tires and still had vibration. Will replace tires to see if this fixes problem. Replace window motor.*ph
The side view mirrors obstruct the driver's vision when making turns.it is especially noticed when the driver is making left hand turns.objects in the road cannot be seen which can potentially cause a collision.the view was "severely restricted" in the outside mirrors when making left hand turns.when in the left hand lane, it was almost impossible to see the objects at the end of the median. *scc
Moonroof makes loud grinding noise on driver side when being closed.outside seal of moonroof glass is bubbled up, not sealed/installed correctly
Power sun roof leaks.
Sunroof/moonroof leaks around glass rubber seal--severe corrosion, metal deformed, effects operation.
Windshield cracked at the very passenger edge midway after having the vehicle for 9 mos new.the crack propogated inward.under warranty and replaced.two months later, same exact thing happened, still under warranty, replaced.year and a half later, same exact thing, same exact place, not under warranty, now all of a sudden it was a stone chip and i have to pay for the new windshield.i beg to differ.
Windshield whistles .dealer tells me they cant do anything .they say it is a design problem.well if it is there will be alot of trade ins.when driving into a head wind it whistles put some pressure on the rear view mirror noise will decrease.
Consumer complained that two front windshields had to be replaced due to poor visibility while driving at night. Consumer stated, the problem was severe glare. Dealer was aware of the problem.
The front left wheel center cap came off, which caused the consumer to pull over. Consumer was unable to retrieve the second wheel cap.
I was sold pre-owned toyota 4runner without its being inspected and then i felt ill treated to be recalled to sign a new purchase agreement with an increased interest percentage, just because i am black!
*scc
Toyota 4- runner, 2003. Wheel lug bolts are breaking off causing wheel to become lose.toyota says the tire rotation service people overtightened the lug nuts.this service was 9 months prior to the lug bolt breaking.i contend that the problem is due to: a.the lug bolts are too small for the weight and hp of this vehicle.or b. The metallurgical compond of the bolts and/or nuts is not correct.or c. The thread tolerances of the bolts an nuts is not correct....toyota refuses to test the damaged bolts and nut that i saved to see if this could be an isolated problem from their supplier.
