On 03'04/02 i was sitting at the traffic light witin on the light to change to green.the light changed to green, then i proceeded into the intersection where i was t-boned on the driver sided. At this timei hear a loud bang then thelower area by the brakes caved in on my left leg, the the doors locked ,then my car alarm sounds off.during this time i can see smoke to my leftt in the door area. So immdiately i try to get out of the vehicle buti had to unlock doors first.i recall trying to get out of the seat but iwas restraint by the seat belt during this time from the impact my vehicle is still moving. I reached over to remove my seat belt while also raising myself out of the seat when the driver air bag deployed.my arm to the full force of the pressure of the air bag deploying.i managed to get between the front seat to cross over to the passenger side to get out of the vehicle when the air bag started to deployedi reached for my purse on front floor of the passenger side and continue to get to the back seat of4 runner. I tried to get out on therear driver side door but it would not open then i went to the passenger rear door and got out but when i stood up out of the vehicle my left leg collaspe and i found my self in the middle of intersection unprotective.i laid in the intersection for about 5-7 minutes beforeother citizen camed on the scene.you could not began to image yourself trapped in this utility vehiclelike a caged mouse with no way out. The vehicle was involved in a frontal collisionbut none of the air bags deployed upon impact. *nlm

I was in an auto accident july 6, 2002. I drove a 98' toyota 4 runner. There were four persons who sustained minor injuries. The airbag seemed to perform as intended, however, to this date i have horrifying plastic material coming from the inside... And outside of my cheeks. It has caused very visible patterns to protrude from the skin, constant pain, and desperate efforts to get answers. Though i have been to many doctors, i have failed to escape the research evasive realities of my providers. Labs simply fail to identify, and doctors agree this is a real problem... Then send me to someone else who says the same.i have struggled with keeping my hope alive.i am now paying labs i found to conduct studies of the samples. I have also found some very concerning medical articles that mirror my symptoms post auto accident. However, these are from non-english speaking doctors in germany, and japan. I wrote toyota via-email some time ago... Needless to say i have seen no interest on their side. I fear this is a real problem, and someone needs to look into it very seriously! please help me.

While driving 45 mph down a city road in va. Beach a car on our right hand side entered the intersection making a left hand turn. The car entered the intersection approx. 20-25 feet ahead of us. I immediatley hit the brakes and turned the car to the left as to try and avoid a collision. We ended up t-boning the oncoming vehicle. Our 4-runner was claimed a total lose due to a bend frame. The front end damage was estimated at 4-6 thousand dollars. The full front end and passenger fender were destroyed. Neither airbag deployed. I estimate the mph of impact to be between 35-40 mph.

Our toyota 4runner caught on fire without any warning.my husband had just pulled into our driveway, taken our 2 small children out of the car, when we noticed smoke coming out from under the hood.the hood would not release.the fire department was called.it took 30-45 minutes to contain the fire.the vehicle is a total lost.

While starting the vehicle early in the morning consumer heard a noise coming from the engine. He proceeded to turn off the engine ,but the engine continued running, immediately hedisconnected the battery, still the engine was continued torun.

Engine failed while driving on the highway at normal speed.dealer couldn't find anything wrong.truck continued to fail and not start for another week until it was towed to dealer again.second dealer claims ecu is rusted caused by a leak somewhere.truck purchased 4 months ago and was a certified used veh.toyota will not pay for the fix. This truck (auto, 6 cyl, 2wd) sometimes stalls, but only when coming to a stop, always in motion, never at idle, just as if the key were turned off. Occurs very intermittently (7 times since sept 2003)... Mechanic informed me that nothing has registered on the computer. Interstate battery is 8 months old. Every other time, i've put it in park and it starts right up, but this morning it wouldn't start for almost two minutes in a busy intersection. A friend also has 1998 4runner; says it's been happening to her over two years, but less often. This is very dangerous. This can't be a coincidence, and it can't just be the two of us. I spoke with toyota today, but mine is the only complaint they have about this.

We were on vacation driving from atlanta, ga to damariscotta, me.on the morning of saturday august 7, we began our second day of travel just outside of harrisburg, pa.we were entering the interstate when we heard a loud pop and the car began to shake badly.we immediately took the car, a 1998 toyota 4runner with fewer than 60,000 miles on it, to harrisburg toyota.the dealer eventually told us we had a broken rod and need a short block replacement, for which we were charged $5500, including $3900 in parts.

I was driving on hwy. 45 about 65 mph.my sister and nephew were in the vehicle with me.all of a sudden, we heard a loud pop. I felt the power go out of the vehicle and proceeded to pull over to the shoulder of the freeway - almost hitting another vehicle.my nephew said it sounded like we got a flat tire.then we noticed smoke coming out from under the hood of the vehicle.when we go tout, we noticed oil on the ground -under the vehicle.we lifted the hood - and noticed a hole in the engine block.the vehicle had to be towed to a gas station, and then picked up the next day by the repair shop.the vehicle is under warranty with gap insurance.the repair shop is telling me the warranty does not cover it, and that it is not a manufacture malfunction.i also had just withinless than a month ago, had to have the starter replaced, prior to this happening.

Engine failed twice within two months for no reason. Both times slowing down when going to turn. No one was hurt./// lost control of 4 runner while slowing down for exit ramp at 35 mph and wet road. Speed was not excessive for conditions. Car spun hit guard rail and then hit and did a 360. 4 days later, dry freeway at 70 mph car suddenly veered to left, spun 360 then into grass median 360 , then 360 back onto freeway and came to stop, only god could have prevented this from being a disaster. Two passengers, no one was hurt. Car covered with grass.( dot number: tire size: 16 )

While consumer was driving on a mountain/coming down and exiting, vehicle completely shutdown, this has happened twice. Consumer was told by dealer that vehicle was fine. It just needs to get used to mountain drivingb (note: the vehicle has a supercharger that the dealer added when the vehicle was new, its a trd supercharger).

The frequent tail light failures on my 4runner is not only a major nuisance but also a latent safety problem.my 1998 4runners (left or right) tail light has failed twice so far and my brother's 1996 4runner has had at least 3 failures.i have seen many other 4runner's on the road with single tail lights out.i have mentioned it to my dealer but they say its just the bulb.based on my brother and my experience, it is usually the same side bulb that fails subsequent times.it also does not affect the brake lights, only the rear running lights (left or right, never both).i feel toyota should have to investigate the tail light circuit and take corrective action.i also believe this problem has been underreported by owners as they just get the bulb replaced and do not bother to look into it further.this problem could also post a difficult-to-quantify safety issue as many 4runner owners drive around missing one tail light.it is also a financial issue as owners need to replace these bulbs often (yearly or less) and can be pulled over by the police for this traffic violation (new york city has just started heavily enforcing $20 fines for this).if you are not the u.s. Agency i should contact with this problem, please let me know who i should contact. Thank you.

I have a 1998 toyota 4 runner and the tail lights continue to blow.one of the lights is continuously out, but it is usually the left side more than the right.i have noticed that several other 4runners also have blown tail lights.is this a manufacturer defect/recall?

Frequent problem with tail lights on my vehicle have burned out.the "stone montain georgia" dealership cannot locate the problem but it seems to me to be a dead short in the system.this problem has created a fire in the upper center rear brake warning light and has melted the housing that in-cases the bulb.the brake and tail lights are constantly burning out.i have ceased use of the remote door lock as the flashing of the lights seamed to only make the problem worse and blow light bulbs more often.not only is the problem a finacial issue with me but it is also a safty factor envolved and i think toyota should take a serious look at this problem on there dime!

My dauther aged 10 years, was in the rear of the car trying to grab a bag of chips that were in the luggage. When we got rear ended at the highway exit, the back door of the suv popped open even though the car doors were locked. My daughter was thrown out of the back of the suv and in front of the truck that rear ended us. Luckily she fell on some pillows that were also flung from the car, thereby reducing her injuries. Also the pickup truck that rear ended us had stopped, so she did not get run over by it. This door should not have opened when it was locked. This is a very serious safety hazard. I have voiced my concerns to toyota, but there has been no response.

Brakes become soft and parking brake has increased number of clicks to tighten-this has occurred at approx 11,000 and again at approx 18,000 miles; took to dealer at approx 11,800 initially with this complaint and they only inspected brakes (no adjustment)and said brakes look almost brand new.i had to return to dealer and have shop foreman drive the truck who then told mechanic to adjust brakes.once again i am noticing brakes are soft and parking brake takes more clicks to tighten (approx 18,000).i contacted another dealer who told me that this is expected with toyota 4 runners because they do not have self adjusting brakes.he said that i need to have the brakes checked and adjusted if necessary every 5000 miles (at an extra charge of 30.00 dollars).i explained that they go out of adjustment very quickly and not at exactly every 5000 miles, therefore the dealer would not adjust them until i have a problem again which means i am spending time and money (besides the expected 5000 mile oil change/rotate tires) with a problem i feel may not be normal for a $32,000 dollar truck and should be covered under warantee or at least described as a common necessity to customers before purchase( nowhere in the owners manual does it state that brakes will need adjustment frequently due to not self adjusting).

When cruise control is on and going up a hill, transmission downshifts.

The cruise control system malfunctioned, causing vehicle to kick into high gear, coming out of the overdrive and revs up to 3500 mph which almost caused an accident.cause unknown.

Gear shifter locks up when placed in "park" (p) position resulting in key not being able to be removed from ignition. This caused the push-button control handle to become completely detached from the gear shifter arm and servered the wire for the push-button overdrive control. The screws became stipped and the housing inside the rubber cover were cracked. I have not contacted the dealership were i purchased the vehicle due to past problems i've had when reporting defects to them.

Driving on freeway 5 at san diego, california from the surface street at 35 mph, i heard a thump and the 4 runner slowed to a stop. The traffic was held to a screetching halt as the car will not move. I manage to push it to the emergency side parking. It was towed to frank toyota of national city san diego, ca. There it was diagnosed that the rear end axle gear has been stripped. I just arrived today survive a third tour of iraq and this happened. This nearly cost me my life and possibly a lot more people.

Consumer states that rear left seat belt does not unlock. Dealer notified.

While driving the child became twisted in seat belt, it worked like a ratchet tightening around her waist, consumer drove to a nearby police station where they had to cut the seat belt to release the child. Consumer believes there is a defect in the design of the seat belt.

Seat belt retractor failed causing, seat belt to stuck.

Rear passenger seat belt made a loud noise and completely unraveled from its retraction component (mounted on the pillar) while in use. Seat belt now remains extended, and will not retract, even with assistance.

My 7 year old daughter was sitting in the rear passenger seat with the shoulder belt on.we parked and some how she got tangled up in the belt.when i pushed the seatbelt release button it locked up around her waist and would not loosen to get her out.every time i moved her to get her out it would lock up more until she was standing in the back seat with the belt so tight around her waist that it was leaving marks and i had to cut the seat belt to get her out.this concerns me as a parent that the belt locks when the car is turned off and in park.i contacted the toyota dealer and they are going to order me the seat belt we will be negotiating who is going to pay for this.

Withinyear rotors had to be replaced, under warranty. Was told by service manager at dealership was due to braking excessively during rain on long downhill run. Suggested to gear down which i now do. Situation did not repeat except that i now intermittently experience similar "pulsating" while braking. Was told by another repair service that i would eventually have to replace rotors.

My wife was driving along approximately 30 mph. All of a sudden the passenger side rear window shatters for no apparent reason.luckily our 3 year old child was on the other side.she called the police and he said it was a defect in toyota 4runners. Ts

Re: campaign number 02v021000component: suspensioni was told by jay at toyota (800 3314331 ext 5)that this recall does not apply to my 1998 toyota 4runner sr5. Please research & report. I was given this campaign number by efi auto service. Mechanic stated that his wife took her 1998 4 runner sr5 into the dealer & repairs were made.what determines which auto will be serviced by this recall.

Consumer states while driving, vehicle lost directional stability in which it experienced a rollover and was totaled, consumer later received recall 02v021.

My 1998 toyota 4-runner went to the left side of a highway that had rumble strips.the driver swerved to the right to get off the strips and the car tipped and then flipped over 3 times.it was the new york state thruway so the speed was approximately 65 mph. I read an article in usa today recently that without the anti-stability system the toyota 4-runner could acutally flip at speeds of 35 pmh.

Recall on rear suspension was done , now front end of vehicle is unstable.at 10-15 mph when turning steering wheel quickly from side to sidevehicle rocks.the rear of the vehicle rides harder and rougher over bumps, the front end feels as though it bottoms out when making fast hard stops, the body of the vehicle rocks while driving, the body of the vehicle is about 1 1/2 inches higher in the rear now prior to repair.*mj

While driving, consumer went into a dirt gore point and lost control, vehicle overturned down a dirt embankment, investigator feels this was caused by a broken left rear axle, he states there were scrape marks on the spare tire, rear left frame, left rear brake assembly backing plate, left rear wheel, and broke portions of the rear brake drum, he also stated that the vehicle continued to slide rearward until it left the roadway and overturned, mercury insurance company sent this information in, there file number for this is 990629c.

Replacement of all five tires as two were already separating,have had trouble with one loosing air since bought,unable to find reason,tires were replaced by goodyear and firestone advised can't reemburse because of already taken off,otherfirestone said tires are two years old and needed replacing anyway. Both failures were blowouts while traveling on interstate highways at approx. 75 miles per hour.the first failure in 1998 was in the early evening on interstate 45 in houston texas.the left tire blew with no warning.the tread seperated and the tire was totally destroyed.a new tire was installed.the second failure was on interstate 285 in atlanta ga.again the tire failed instantaneously and had to be replaced. The two remaining tires are in need of replacement with 49000 + miles.one of the two tires that were installed are still on the car.it is on the front.ever since they were installed the vehicle has had a vibration. One of the original tires is still on the vehicle and the spare is in use.i will have to replace the original soon.if you have any desire to see it you must respond soon. Tires have been rotated and balanced as manufacturer suggested.inside of tires have shown signifigant wear and at the time of recall we had tires checked only to find that there was steel showing on one tire and that tire was changed out with the spare.other 3 tires are showing signs of extreme wear and we were told that because the tires were not made in decatour, il there was nothing that could be done beyond purchasing new tires.there are only 40000 miles on the vehicle at this time and the tires are warrentied at 50000.our concern is that the tires are a hazard because of the wear and this vehicle is primarily used for the family.( dot number: w2hh awb25 tire size: p225/75r15 )

Upon switching my firestone tires to another brand, i noticed that one of the tires removed from my vehicle had a definite crack between the tread. It was an older tire, 2 years, 40k miles, but the deep crack between the treads concerned me, as i had not seen anything like that before.none of the other 3 tires exhibited this unusual wear characteristic. Pe00 020; vehicle was parked andfront right tire blewout. When he changedtires there was one and halfinch tear located in the inner side oftire. Pe 00 020/ tire tread separation: vehicle was inspected by goodyear center and informed that three of the tires showed sign of tread separation on a 1998 toyota, 4 runner; original equipment, p225/75r15, dot# w2hhawb048 & w2hhawbo38(two). Firstone notified and informed consumer that tires were not cover under recall. Tires were available for analysis.

The tire tread peeled off the tire.i have had blow outs before, but have never seen anything like this.firestone did not hesitate to replace it.they did so under their road hazard claim.the tread on the tire was excellent, was properly inflated and maintained.i did not hit any objects on the highway and firestone found no foreign objects inside the tire when they broke it down.i can't and won't wait for any settlements as tire safety is more important then the engine under the hood.iwill have these replaced but not withfirestone tires.can you offer me any advice as how to proceed?i have also reported this to toyota through their customer relations assistance line.thanks.( dot number: tire size: p225/75r15 )

While driving at 70mph rear passenger side tire's tread separated from tire. Tire has been replaced with same type.

The cruise control system malfunctioned, causing vehicle to kick into high gear, coming out of the overdrive and revs up to 3500 mph which almost caused an accident.cause unknown.

Cruise control refuses to re-engage after using the brakes to slow down, therefore disengageing the system.resume function not working.

My 1998 toyota surges at stop lights. It does not do it all the time. I will start to keep a record of weather conditions. And if i have the a/c on. I try to keep my foot on the brake pedal, but sometimes it happens when i take my foot off the pedal. I have been very lucky so far. Toyota does not see it as a problem. The date is a guess.
