Very strong fuel/gas odor in 2002 subaru impreza wrx. Gets worse in colder weather. Dealer is repairing under warranty, even though the car is well past the 3/36 warranty period. Handled completely to my satisfaction.

The vehicle slid on some snow and ice, which caused the consumer to lose control of the vehicle and hit a pole, and the air bags did not deploy.*ph

While driving at 55-60 mph consumer attempted to turn a corner too fast and vehicle collided with a brick wall. Consumer was thrown against the windshield and broke his nose.the seat belts were not worn , andfrontal air bags did not deploy.consumer was cited by the police for destruction of property.

While driving at 35 mph consumer lost control of the vehicle andhit a tree head on. Upon impact,both frontal air bags did not deploy.driver sustained injuries.

Traveling on a damp, bumpy asphalt road in seattle (tempurature was in the mid-40's).light ahead turns red - i apply the brakes as usual, but the peddle suddenly sinks about an inch and i feel abs come on.it feels as if the brakes have no stopping power and are only working at about 10%.i let up on the brakes and tried again, and was able to stop before hitting the car in front of me.this has also happened once before, on some metal drawbridge grating.it seems as if the abs comes on in times when it should not, which causes the brakes to practically not work.if a car had been closer in front of me, i would have hit it.

I own a 02 wrx i live in armidale australia.i just spent a lot of money fixing this problem.please be careful when the car heats up it can burn out the exhaust sensorand cause major problems with the turbo.i notice once there was nosensor left it gave my car computer nothing to go off .in result costing me 3000 dollars to fix .wrx drivers take care and please get your sensors checked to see if they are in anyway faulty.

Noticed a strong gasoline odor coming from ventilation system.outside ambient temperature was -8f.opened hood and noticed a visible vapor cloud of gasoline.immediately took to dealer's service department, as i felt that the car was no longer safe to drive. Was told that parts were on "national backorder".(this indicates to me that this must be a widespread problem.)car was repaired (after a wait of one week) at a cost of $534.55 (car is out of warranty).repairs included "r&r intake manifold replaced fuel delivery pipe", using parts "pipe cp fuel return", "hose", "gasket intake manifold".website investigating leads me to believe this is indeed a very widespread problem. I believe this could have resulted in an underhood fire.

Fuel rail on 2002 wrx is leaking heavily on the engine. This is a high fire hazard as well as noxious for passengers in the car as it smells heavily of fuel. Since i live in washington state subaru of america has not honored the recall they've put in other states for this exact issue. Subaru has denied warranty repair due to the extended warranty expiring for this issue in 2013. I was never notified of this issue. I am the original owner of this car and have taken it in for every other recall issue that i've been notified of. This is reckless and dangerous. The local repair shop has said they don't think it is correct to charge me for labor and parts that should be covered under warranty by subaru and have directed me to the dealership. The dealership asked me to get authorization from subaru, which was denied. This is a safety issue that should be covered under warranty for the life of the car. It is a bone stock car with no aftermarkets parts or enhancements.

Working night shifts, started my car to let warm up, temperature was 43 degrees fahrenheit at the time. After start up i could smell raw fuel out side the car as well as inside the car through the vents. Also gas mileage has gone down by drastically, normally get 300-330 miles a tank and currently getting barley 200. Noticed car starting to smoke a little as well from under the hood, no fire but not going to keep driving the car.

When i returned about five minutes later, i detected a strong odor of gasoline before getting in. The fumes inside were unbearable and i had to air out the car before driving, but the order persisted for about an hour. I left for houston that evening and thought the fumes were just a one time occurrence.last night i visited a friend for about 2 hours. It rarely gets very cold in houston, but at 9 p.m. Last night when i left the temperature was probably just a little above freezing. When i started the car all appeared normal, but when iturned on the heater, the smell of gas was overwhelming. I aired out the car while driving, but the got the same result every time i tried to use the heater. The car reeked of raw gasoline when i parked it after the 1.5 mile drive home.i got on-line after i got home and found out this was a very common complaint and that tsb had been issued. Odor of gasoline in passenger cabin caused by leaking fuel line.fumes causing driver dizziness and headaches.subaru repaired the leak by tightening a fuel line connection.the problem returned and subaru can not locate source of fuel odor.

I drive a 2002 subaru impreza wrx. A week and a half ago we had temps below zero. While driving i noticed very strong gas smells coming through the vents while using the defrost. After some online investigation i have found that this is a fairly common problem with these vehicles for anyone living in a colder climate. I belive the problem has to do with the fittings that attatch the metal fuel lines to the flexible hoses in the engine compartment. In cold weather these fail, spilling gasoline onto the engine block. Now the problem is more common, even on cool, but not cold days. I understand that subaru is aware of the problem and has even issued a service bulletin to dealerships advising them of the fix for this (which is very expensive). However, it should not be the consumers responsiblity to pay for a potentially dangerous fix that is common on these cars. Strong gas fumes in the passanger compartment and gasoline spilling onto the engine block should constitute enough of a safety hazard to justify a recall of these vehicles. There is a smell of gas on my 2002 wrx for a period of time after i start the car.i've read on some internet forums that there may be an incompatibility between one of the gas hoses and the gas rails.the smell seems worst when it is cold out.it is very noticable when i have outside air venting enabled.it seems odd that i would ever smell gasoline and fear this may be dangerous.

There is a significant leaking of raw gasoline, from under the intake manifold.this problem exhibits itself when the temperatures fall below freezing.it is very evident in the cabin of the vehicle as you can smell the gasoline.the gasoline is visibly paddling on top of the engine block, where two fuel line run below the turbo inlet pipe. My 2002 subaru wrx ha sa raw fuel smell when its cold. The dealer say parts are on order. This was a month ago. I'm worried it might catch fire. There is a tsb, but i'm not getting any closer to having the problem checked/fixed.

Strong odor of fuel and/or burnt oil inside the vehicle repeatedly.i contacted subaru long ago about this problem when i got a recall notice from subaru national saying my car "may" be part of this recall.i took the car to a subaru dealer. Usually in the morning when i turn on the car, as soon as i would drive off to work i would catch a the smell of raw gas inside my car! at first i thought it was just from the outside that made its way through my cabin but it kept happening for days. Constant gasoline leakage during cold weather (below twenty degrees fahrenheit). After driving with the windows open for forty five minutes, the car still reeked of gasoline. I pulled into the subaru dealerships service area causing the car next to me to move because of the smell - but the service advisor said there is no recall but they were aware of the problem and that it would cost about $800 to fix, but they were busy right now. . .this does not seem right, this could cause a fire, and gasoline is not healthy to breath especially for long periods of time!

Any time the temperature goes below freezing you can smell raw gasoline in the cabin of the car.

Nevada is not a state listed in the wvk-21 subaru recall of dec, 2009, but this vehicle is leaking fuel from the same problem on cold mornings in northern nevada.

I also found subaru service bulletin 09-36-03 dated 04/01/03.subaru service bulletin 09-36-03this bulletin states:some 2002 model impreza wrx (2.0l turbo) may experience a fuel smell incold weather (temperature <14 degrees f) from the rubber hose connector, located under the intake manifold, between two direct fuel-feed metal lines to the injectors. The changing of the pipe and hose size was adopted, starting with engine number 673467 to better align the two fuel lines. This was accomplished by shortening the fuel pipe and lengthening the hose both by 30mm. To complete this service procedure, you must replace the fuel pipe assembly and hose as a set.reading this it is evident of the following conclusions:there is a design flaw in some 2002 model impreza wrxsthis design flaw is evident in the fact that it was apparently changed for future models after the problem was realized.using the subaru service bulletin and the online forums, i was able to locate a fuel leak in the engine compartment at the location determined. This fuel leak was further confirmed by a subaru dealer after asked by subaru of america to get it looked at by one of their dealers for them to take action on this issue while i was still working with them to get this issue resolved. This fuel leak poses at least 2 threats: 1 for a fire, and 2 for exposing passengers to hazardous fumes.

In cool or cold weather, there is a very strong odor of raw fuel inside the passenger compartment. Anyone inside or near the car is exposed to harmful gasoline fumes, these vapors are toxic when concentrated and may cause dizziness and hallucinations in smaller amounts. There is also concern of potential fire danger. Fuel odor has been present year-round on my car, and also on many other 2002 and 2003 subaru imprezas. This is a common issue that subaru needs to address, but their position seems to be that it is the customer's fault and responsibility. Our 2002 subaru wrx 2.0l turbo has developed a fuel line leak (high pressure side) below the intake. A simple google search revealed a subaru service bulletin 09-36-03 "fuel smell in cold weather" warning of this issue with the 2002 2.0l engine. The problem is clearly much more than a fuel smell. It is very dangerous leak that will eventually cause someone to be killed in a fuel fire. This is a fundamental design flaw and a very dangerous one at that. A recall should have been issued. I'd be surprised there isn't pending litigation.

My car matches the description of issue pe04002. I am filing this since i believe the manufacturer should issue a recall and address this. I have had this issue for the past two winters, but only now became of aware of the tsb through the internet. It concerns me customers have not be proactively contacted nor has there been uniform dealer treatment of this issue. I would like the nhtsa to investigate the safety impacts of this likely fuel leak.

On a cold morning, i started the car and noticed a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin when the heater was turned on.when looking under the hood, i could not find the source of this leak.i called the local dealer, who told me there is a technical service bulletin out for this problem, but that they cannot fix it for free since my car is out of warranty.in fact, they quoted me $250 for the work!now to me, leaking gasoline for any reason seems to be a serious safety concern, and i have talked to several other early 2002 model year wrx owners who have had the same problem.i would hope that subaru of america would go out of their way to fix this problem for free since all it would take is a stray spark to have a fire and serious legal action brought against them.if they know this is a problem, i would hope they would fix it for free to ensure the safety of their cars.

Fuel leak in engine compartment at very low ambient air temperatures i located the leak and took the vehicle to the dealership service dept. The day i took the car there air temps were 20 degrees warmer and i did not experiencea leak. The dealership service dept. Stated that they could not find a leak i told them the leak occurs at very low temperatures only and told them the location of the leak also i gave them a copy of a technical service bulletin pertaining to this very problem. They sent me on my way saying it seems to be fine even with my explanation. That night temperatures dropped and the fuel leak returned it seems that the dealership will not fix this problem until they actually experience it themselves. I have not been able to use the car for fear of a fire it leaks large amounts of fuel down onto the engine and exhaust. I do not understand why the dealership will not take my word for this since it is already a documented problem by the manufacturer and such a dangerous one at that.

This is in reference to subaru issued tsb 09-36-03 titled: "fuel smell in cold weather.". This problem is going to kill somebody unless you mandate a recall. I reported the issue a few years ago and your investigation concluded it was not a serious problem. Since then i've dealt with the fuel odor on cold days. The odor now occurs when the temperature is below 35 f. A couple of days ago, the temps were in the teens f and the odor got really bad. After driving for about 10 minutes, white fumes started pouring out of the right side of the hood and from the scoop. There is so much fuel leaking now that it's being vaporized into a white smoke and spews out of the engine for about 1 or 2 minutes. I opened the hood to confirm there is no fire, which there was not. But there was an impressive amount of white fumes which resembled smoke but again, no fire.a friend who was driving in another car, 3 cars behind me, reported that the gas smell from my car was so bad they had to pull back.after doing some research, vaporized fuel will ignite at 536 degrees f. It is very possible for the turbo charger on this car to get that hot after some driving. With the engine compartment full of white gas fumes and the cabin fill of a powerful raw gas smell, it only stands to reason that this could catch file in the engine compartment and the passenger cabin. After doing a simple search on this (odi) website for both subaru wrx, and subaru impreza, looking at several different categories (fuel system, fuel delivery, fuel rails, ect) i found 286 complaints of the same problem. On the nasioc site, there are 97 pages of people listing the same problem which is ~1800 posts (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131755&page=97).the tsb mentioned above minimizes the issue by stating fuel leaks with temps under 14 f. In my car it happens under 35 f for the length of my drive. This issues is going to kill somebody and there needs to be a recall.

I own a 2002 subaru impreza wrx.i have been experiencing a gas smell in the cabin and engine compartment.i thought that maybe my car was acting up but i know realize that this is a widely recognized problem. The contact owns a 2002 subaru wrx.the contact received nhtsa campaign id number:09v468000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) and took the vehicle to a local dealer.the dealer stated to the contact part that the part was not available and would be available within three days.the contact stated that was a year ago.the contact called the manufacturer and they stated that the dealer should have the part.the contact continued to search for parts for the vehicle but the dealer still did not have the part.the contact performed some repairs to the vehicle because the check engine light was illuminated and the vehicle smelled like gasoline.after the repairs, the dealer stated they could not repair the vehicle because the contact took the vehicle to another location for repairs. The contact stated the vehicle was becoming unsafe safe to drive due to the smell of gasoline inside the vehicle.the contact stated the vehicle could cause a fire.the failure mileage was 96,599.

Since the weather has gotten cold here in michigan (below freezing) there has been a strong smell of raw fuel in the passenger compartment of my 2002 subaru wrx.it is most apparent upon start up.the smell at times will be so strong that it will bring you to the point of vomiting or passing out if you do not open the windows down.

I drive a 2002 subaru wrx impreza, and it has a gas leak that i can smell inside the cabin when its cold outside. After doing research i found that a lot of the same model cars have the same problem. When it gets cold outside the hardlines on the engine shrink allowing the softlines to squirt gas onto the engine block. Subaru acknowledges the problem but claims its not a safety issue and won't fix it. I feel its a major safety issue due to the fact i'm breathing in gas, and cause any type of spark under the hood of my car could lead to an explosion when im driving.

On very cold days i have a very strong smell of gas in the car with the heat on. It is so strong i get dizzy and nauseous and have to drive with the windows down and shut the heat off.i have a 6 week old baby in the car who's daycare provider complains about her clothes and car seat smelling like gas.i have tracked down the problem and attributed it to a known technical service bulletin number 09-36-03. I would like to know why this isn't a recall? raw fuel vapor is explosive and a carcinogen.as it is now, i cannot drive my car on cold days due to this problem.

In feb of 2006 i began smelling a slight fuel odor in my 2002 subaru wrx. A few days after i noticed this i came home and was going to try and find the source of the smell, it had slightly worsened over those days. I pulled in my driveway, opened the hood and looked around the engine for a minute, i then went into my garage to get some tools and a light. While in the garage i heard a "whoosh" and went outside to see what made the noise. When i went outside my car was on fire in the engine compartment. I then called 911. When they fire dept arrived i informed them that i had ammunition in the car, and they said they would have to wait to put it out until the ammo burned off. After a few minutes the fire had reached the rear of the car and the ammo exploded, the fire dept then put the fire out.

1. When ambient temperature is roughly below 45 degrees f, and the car is "cold".2. Gasoline leaks from fuel line under intake manifold. It occurs when the rubber hose and the metal fuel pipe contract in cold conditions and break the seal causing gasoline to leak. The leak drips fuel onto the engine and causes a strong odor to permeate the cabin through the ventilation system. 3. Nothing has been done yet to correct the problem. The subaru dealer has quoted $150 in parts plus labor to fix the problem under subaru technical service bulletin # 09-36-03. Parts required are new hose and pipe plus gaskets for intake manifold and coolant. Parts would have to be ordered by dealer.

I noticed a raw fuel smell when starting the car in the morning.this was originally just an issue in cold weather, but the smell has persisted and now occurs even after normal overnight low temperatures here in seattle (40-50 degrees).i believe this is a safety issue for three reasons:first, the fuel is leaking onto the engine block of the car posing a fire hazard.second, the fuel smell is a health hazard to occupants of the vehicle.third, due to the fuel smell, i have been using my heating system on the recirc setting, which is not as effective at clearing condensation from the inside of the windshield and lessens the effectiveness of the defroster, reducing my ability to see out of the vehicle. I have not had the problem repaired yet as i wanted to file this complaint first.

Since owning my 2002 subaru impreza wrx, on occasions when the weather is cold and vehicle heating is activated, overpowering fuel odors are consistently present in the cabin area.the odor is pronounced and persistent and does not "burn off" eventually.under these conditions, it is not tolerable to drive the vehicle without opening the car's windows to help diffuse them.not doing so will give occupants symptoms common to exposure to heavy doses of fuels vaports in an enclosed area: namely headaches and nausea.the issue appears to be well known within the wrx community, particularly with the 2002 model owners and nhtsa is aware of subaru of america's (soa) tsb concerning the problem.as i live in an area where extremely cold weather, which seems to be associated with the issue, does not usually occur for extensive periods of time, i had not pursued the issue for resolution by till last year when the problem was noticed to be predictably chronic in the winter season.i contacted soa via email at that time asking them for advice to resolve the problem and was advised to have a dealership investigate it.as they did not indicate this would be paid for by them and i did not have financial resources to pursue this independently, i did not take the issue further. However, the issue is recurring daily now in this particularly cold winter so i have contacted them again to further pursue this with them.my internet research, the tsb and the many complaints on nhtsas site concerning the issue seem to support the wrx owner community's perspective that this is a design flaw and should be remediated by soa, free of owner charges, as a recall.would you please advise if nhtsa will be pursuing this with soa as a recall issue?also, i was interested in reading the detailed tsbs available on this site but cannot retrieve them.soa charges a fee to download them.is this standard industry practice and is there a way i can get them from nhtsa without fees?

When weather has dropped to 30f or below, i smelled very strong gasoline fumes in and around vehicle.searched nasioc and found others had problem.all four clamps holding fuel lines on under intake manifold were loose to the point that they could be spun around.

During normal driving on days where ambient temperatures exceed 90 degrees, an overwhelming smell of gasoline enters the cabin after about 30 minutes of driving. The gasoline fumes often remain in the cabin for several hours after the vehicle has been parked.

Recently the outside air temperatures have hovered near or below zero degrees f. On those mornings when it is that cold and i start my car, i smell a strong raw fuel odor for several minutes or until i have driven several miles. I investigated and found the main fuel line to be leaking raw fuel onto the engine when it is started in weather this cold. There is a vol recall by subaru of america covering this (subaru recall campaign wvk-21) on this model but it does not cover the state of missouri where i reside and have my car registered. This same issue could easily cause an engine fire should the leaking raw fuel come into contact with an ignition source or with the nearby hot turbocharger or exhaust. There is no reason what so ever that this recall should be limited to the few states that it is since it is just as dangerous in my state as in any of the states listed on the recall. Btw, my car was originally purchased and registered in one of the covered states...minnesota.thank you.

There is a very strong fuel smell that comes through the vents whenever i start the car in cold temperatures (10 degrees fahrenheit or below). The smell will linger until the car has been moving for fifteen minutes or so. Working night shifts, started my car to let warm up, temperature was 43 degrees fahrenheit at the time. Also gas mileage has gone down by drastically, normally get 300-330 miles a tank and currently getting barley 200. Inhaling gas fumes and the possibility of a car fire seems more of a severe safety issue, more than just a quick fix item.

Several times in the winters of 2008 & 2009 (so far) when first starting my car in very cold weather (although the last time in dec. 2009 the temp was cool but above freezing) i would get a strong smell of gas inside the car and had to open the windows until the engine warmed up.checking your website i found a recall dated dec. 1, 2009 (nhtsa action number ea09011) that seems to describe what happens.i called subaru and was told my car was not part of the recall and that i must take it to an authorized dealer and have them inspect and repair it at my expense.they would send the results to subaru which would determine if they would reimburse any part of my expenses.i do not believe this is a satisfactory resolution to what i deem a safety and health issue.

Gasoline smell when starting car in cold weather (<20f). This has been a recurring problem on my 02 subaru wrx. The first event was at approx 15000 miles and the fuel line clamps were tightened. A second time at 45000 miles and the dealer could not duplicate (because the car was warm in the dealership.) now at 73,000 miles in 20f weather, the smell has returned when starting the car with the engine cold. I can see the gasoline puddling below the problem hose clamps. Subaru has known about this for years now and issued a tsb, but the dnagerous fuel leak problem persists! of course, the repair they did on my car (tightening the clamps) while it was in warranty was not a permanent fix, and i face potential repairs at my cost for a problem subaru should have fixed by now. Not only is this a safety defect (fuel pubbling on the engine), it is also likely an emissions defect (raw gasoline vapors to the atmosphere) and a passenger health risk from breathing gasoline vapors. I don't understand why there has not been a recall on this long-known problem!

However, once the car warms up....the fuel smell goes away until the cars cools off again and the whole thing starts again. I have read the tsb and haven't had time in goto subaru because i have some concerns as to whether it will be taken care of since i am beyond my 3/36 warranty. I took it to them once about a year a ago for the same problem and they smelled it but couldn't find a "leak" so they just tightened all the clamps down. When the outside temperature drops below 20f a very strong gasoline smell happens inside and outside the car. Subaru is aware of this and have tsb 09-36-03 to cover cars under warranty and expect the out of warranty owner to have the manufacturing defect repaired. This affects 2002 wrx cars and the design was changed per the tsb. The smell is severe and can also fill the garage where the car is parked. Subaru are aware of this and should recall the affected 2002 models. Gasoline leaking onto the area of the intake manifold has to be a safety concern.

Started the car first thing in the morning to drive approximately 1.5 miles to the store. Outside temperature was about 48 degrees f. After returning directly from the store (the same 1.5 miles) there was a very strong smell of gasoline as i stepped out of the car.i smelled at the gap between the hood and driver's fender and determined the engine bay to be the source of the gasoline smell.i used a flashlight to search for any visible leaks, but i could not see the gasoline.the smell was incredibly strong though.it seemed to be the strongest right above the manifold between the intercooler, manifold, and turbo.i'm very worried of an engine fire due to the leaking.i'm taking the car to the dealer for examination of this problem.

My 2002 subaru impreza wrx exhibits a very strong raw gasoline smell after running in cold weather.i find the problem most pronounced after a temperature change.i am concerned that my car will catch on fire.

During cold starts (<35f), there is a very strong raw fuel smell leaking into the cabin.this is resolved by switching to recirc.the smell is even stronger outside towards the front of the car.the fuel smell goes away about 10-15 minutes of driving. This has happened during the last two winters in seattle.

An extremely strong odor of unburnt fuel engulfed the cabin of the vehicle, giving my passenger and i a headache.the odor has returned every day since then.

I purchased my 2002 subaru in october of 2001. The following winter during a particularly cold trip to the mountains i noticed a strong fuel smell outside the vehicle. I was unable to replicate it once i got home. When i asked the dealership gresham nissan subaru in gresham oregon about it at my next oil change they said they didn?t find anything. I did not take the car into cold weather again until the vehicle was well out of warranty. When i did i noticed an even stronger smell of gas. I decided to pay out of pocket to have the leaking fuel injection system corrected before i made a move from portland oregon to the significantly colder climate in madison wisconsin. It was very disappointing to pay almost one thousand dollars to correct a defect that was inherent in the vehicle from the time it was new. Especially when this defect may cause an explosion.

I am a disabled/handicapped person and this subaru is my only means of transportation. I won't sacrifice my two children and put them at danger inside this car when it's leaking gasoline and potentially create a deadly accident/fire. I can't even park the car inside the garage because i'm concerned that the fumes could reach the house water furnace and trigger a fire when it encounters the pilot light. Fuel odor in cabin during cold weather.i have searched the defects/recall pages for this issues and foudn that it has been closed due to the occurance only lasting for a few moments.this is not true!the fuell leakage continues during any cold weather use, not just at startup.i find this a huge safety issue as i had become extremely dizzy on a normal daily commute (15-20 minutes).the odor is continuous as long as the vehicle in not in motion (i.e. Stop and go traffic).i consider this fuel leak a major issue with driver safety, and for those on the road at the same time as anyone else with a 2002 wrx in cold weather.i am a mechanical engineer and a member of sae (society of automotive engineers), and consider any overlook of this problem by soa (subaru of america) to be an enormous reliability issue.i hope that the proper authorities can straighten this out and fix those vehicle manufactured with this very dangerous defect.

In cold weather, with the heater on there is a strong fuel smell in passenger cabin. Identified by tsb 03-0906: fuel rail leak.subaru of america will not cover this fix as my mileage is around 45,000 and thus outside the waranty period.my feeling is that this is a safety issue (gasoline leak and noxious fumes in the passenger cabin) or at least an emissions issue and should be fixed for free. Instead the dealer estimates this is a $600 fix.

There is a known internal tsb being circulated by subaru of america about this very problem. Pricing has ranged from $650.00 and up. This is a hazard and a severe safety issue. Started the car first thing in the morning to drive approximately 1.5 miles to the store. Outside temperature was about 48 degrees f. After returning directly from the store (the same 1.5 miles) there was a very strong smell of gasoline as i stepped out of the car.i smelled at the gap between the hood and driver's fender and determined the engine bay to be the source of the gasoline smell.i used a flashlight to search for any visible leaks, but i could not see the gasoline.the smell was incredibly strong though.it seemed to be the strongest right above the manifold between the intercooler, manifold, and turbo.i'm very worried of an engine fire due to the leaking.i'm taking the car to the dealer for examination of this problem.

During the cold period last week, my2002 subaru impreza wrx had a very strong smell of raw gas. Subaru has issued a tsb # 09-36-03 dated 4/01/03 acknowledging the problem and has a repair kit specifically designed to fix the problem. This problem should result in a recall by subaru and be repaired at subaru's expense. It is a potential explosive/fire event and is a fault in the original design. The dealers will not fix this problem without charging the customers. The repair kit is about $60 but labor is $700-800. Its a safety issueand i'm afraid to drive it like it is.

Vehicle is over mileage for warranty work , so subaru want's to charge me $400 dollars to fix it. Now it starts leaking below 50 degrees.

I own a 2002 subaru wrx. Starting in the winter of 2005 (and recurring in the winter of 2006), a strong gas smell inside the cabin and around the car is present. This only happens with the ambient outside temperature is cold; usually below 35 degrees. During the winter of 2005, i believed the smell was nothing major but when it recurred in 2006, i decided to do something about it. I did research on the nhtsa website, along with subaru web forums (www.i-club.com; www.nasioc) and come to find out that this is a common occurrence with this model.i took my car to my local subaru on 11/13/06. It sits overnight so they can check the car on the morning of the 14th when the temperature is cold enough for the problem to arise. They do find a gas leak concurrent with the manufacturer's technical service bulletin (# 09-36-03 dated 04-01-03). The tsb replaces the fuel pipe assembly and hose as a set. The leak comes from the rubber hose connector, located under the intake manifold, between the two direct fuel-feed metal lines to the injectors. When the temperature is cold, the metal fuel line contracts more than the rubber fuel line, thus creating a "hole" for the gas to leak out of. The repair was quoted at $380.38.i am outraged over this repair for two reasons: i am not happy with having to spend money on a repair that is essential a design flaw. Though i am past the warranty period, i feel that this repair should be covered by subaru as it is not a "repair;" it is a fix for their mistake. I am most upset, however, over the fact that subaru and the nhtsa have not created a recall campaign for this fix. This is a very dangerous problem as leaking fuel in a hot engine compartment is dangerous. It's a problem that could prove to be fatal for some owners. I however am fortunate to fix this problem before anything happened to me.i ask that both subaru of america and the nhtsa take a serious look at this problem and initiate a recall before any deaths or injuries occur.

In cold weather when my engine has only been running for a few minutes, i smell a very strong fuel odor.my husband says that it is strongest on the right hand (passenger) side of the engine but he says that the smell seems to dissipate once the engine is up to operating temperature.i have recently exceeded the 36000 mile warranty and have not had a repair done yet under my extended warranty but i think that this shouldn't be a problem that happens to a car with only 36000 miles on it.

Consumer is experiencing problems with the fuel line. The fuel line tends to leaks on cold days. The consumer took the vehicle to beserviced and it was determined that the fuel line shrinks at certain temperatures. They could not fix the problem.

Only i happened to be parked at marin general hospital, where my wife delivered our first born child!this night was a particularly cold evening for northern california, around 32f. I have just purchased a 2002 subaru impreza wrx, upon driving home i was extremely light headed and very sleepy i also noticed the pungent smell of raw fuel, after driving home with the windows open in 30 degree weather i did some research which lead me to find there was a significant fuel leak in one of the fuel pipe / hose connections,(on the passenger side in the engine compartment) which has resulted in the fuel dripping on to the engine... This is extremely unsafe and i am fearful of driving the car.this is now a tsb w/ subaru, but for the safety of owners and other drivers this needs to be a recall placed in the highest regard!! i will be contacting subaru of america to seek assistance!!the parts and the repair labor are stated in the bulletin... However this is no simple fix.. Pricing and technical know how are of an elevated degree..

During some cold weather of about 20 farenheit i recently i smelled a strong gasoline smell in the cabin of the vehicle. At first i thought it was the vehicle cold start emissions, but it continued after a long drive (60 minutes) and was most noticeable when the vehicle was not moving. I popped the hood and there was a strong gasoline smell so it appeared the smell was originating from under the hood.i continued to drive in cold weather, and my gas mileage dropped to about 16 mpg highway. This is compared to about 28 mpg i normally get on the highway.after the weather warmed up, the gas smell mostly subsided and gas mileage returned to normalupon searching online i did find that subaru has issued a technical service bulletin for this issue that explains these symptoms as a defect in the length of the fuel hose and rail which causes fuel to leak. But upon talking to the dealer, they wanted me to pay for a technician to attempt to verify the issue, which is impossible now that the weather is warm. They also will not commit that subaru will pay for the repair in any case. The repair if i pay for it will be more than $500, but i feel it is a health and safety issue. It's a health issue because gasoline fumes are a recognized carcinogen, and a safety issue because having 40% of the gasoline disperse in the engine bay could cause a fire or explosion. Also, waiting for the symptom to appear is too late, and does not reliably identify which vehicles may be affected. A vehicle may mostly be in a moderate climate, and then is driven in cold weather, and suddenly has a pressurized gas leak.

This complaint is consistent with the fuel smell reported in the subaru technical service bulletin 09-36-03. I have experienced this problem every day this winter (dec 2003-present) that the temperature has been 20 f or below. After at least two prior attempts to get the dealer (goldstein subaru of central ave, albany, ny) to duplicate the problem, they acknowledged it last week and attempted to remedy the problem by tightening the hose clamps. This did not solve the problem as the fuel smell returned the day after their attempted repair. Each time this car is started and run in cold weather (20f and below) a fuel smell develops under the hood and in the cabin, indicating the presence of a fuel leak. The dealer has not accomodated my request to correct this problem per the service procedure stated in the tsb 09-36-03 and as an item covered under my warranty. I am concerned that this problem poses a significant health and safety risk to my family and all those that share the road with me. I am troubled that subaru of america is not treating this as a design flaw which would facilitate a recall. My vehicle is equipped with a turbocharger which can reach high service temperatures along with the exhaust system, creating a potential ignition source. Believe tsb 09-36-03 should be reissued as a recall.

Strong unburned fuel odor in cabin of 2002 subaru wrx allegedly caused by loose/missized fuel lines under intake manifold.

The temperature was in the 40's today. Noticed a strong smell of raw fuel coming from under the hood. I have experienced this problem on multiple occasions. Was able to locate and verify a leak from one of the fuel hoses on the passenger side under the intake manifold (i have video to prove that there is a leak). Have obtained and installed new fuel line on the entire fuel delivery rail. Now, after performing more research i have learned that the problem is with the actual fuel rail and not the hoses. I also know that subaru knows of a manufacturer defect in the original fuel rail. Aside from being a dangerous fire hazard, this defect is allowing possibly thousands of cars to release copious amounts of hydrocarbons into the air. This safety hazard and environmental hazard needs to be highly considered as the basis of a recall!

When the weather began to turn colder, i smelled fuel coming from somewhere under the hood.the smell would persist the whole time i drove the car and would be especially evident when the car was idling and the vent was on.i called the local dealer who told me that there was a service bulletin out on this problem (tsb# 09-36-03) and that it was not covered as a free repair because my car had over 60,000 miles and thus was not under warranty.i believe that a problem like this is not trivial and should not simply be a service bulletin but instead a recall.subaru should replace the offending parts for free; having fuel vapor circulating in the engine compartment certainly seems to me to be cause for grave concern.thank you for considering my complaint.

I own a 2002 subaru wrx impreza wagon.i, like many, many of fellow owners of this car experience fuel leaks around the cars engine when the ambient temperature falls below ~40 degrees f.i have contacted subaru about this problem many times, and each time i take the car into the dealership for diagnostics they state "they can not reproduce the problem."this is patently false since the car reeks of gasoline fumes before and after i leave the dealership.apparently the clamps that hold the fuel line assembly together fail when the outside temperatures are cold.subaru will not repair/replace these clamps (even when the car is under warranty) and repairs total approximately $350-400.this problem is very similar to that issue that resulted in the challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986, cold temperatures leading to fuel leaks, which could lead to fire and explosions.a brief look at an online complaint website revealed about 150 other people with this problem, and that's just the number that took the time to send in a message.it is only a matter of time before one of the vehicles catches on fire and kills someone.subaru is aware of this problem and tacitly acknowledge the faulty manufacture of this car part, but will do nothing to help the owners of these cars.please investigate this matter, i do not want anyone to die because subaru is too cheap to replace a 50 cent o-ring.thank you.

With regards to the investigation listed below, i would like to attest that this problem has not been addressed.as regards the leaking of fuel into the engine compartment, it is a more serious hazard than indicated in your impoverished data.in many cases, the fuel does not cease to leak when the car has warmed up, and will continue to leak fuel steadily.this produces puddles on the hot intake manifold, and toxic conditions for passengers and bystanders. I own a 2002 subaru wrx. If it is cold outside, below 32, i have a bad gas smell. Smell is sometime overwhelming and can give me headaches at times. I have a 4 month old son who i'm afraid may become overcome by these hazardous fumes. The dealers are charging 350 dollars to repair this problem which seems to me to be ridiculous. This problem seems to be a defect in fuel lines that should be taken care of by subaru not the customer who has purchased faulty and dangerous equipment. In cool or cold weather, there is a very strong odor of raw fuel inside the passenger compartment. After some online investigation i have found that this is a fairly common problem with these vehicles for anyone living in a colder climate. I belive the problem has to do with the fittings that attatch the metal fuel lines to the flexible hoses in the engine compartment. Fuel leak in subaru wrx in cold weather. This is related to the other complaints of "fuel smell". I actually witnessed fuel leaking last year and brought it to a dealer to be fixed. They tightened the fittings on my fuel lines and the problem went away. A year later, with the extreme cold weather we are having, the problem is back. The smell in the cabin during morning warm ups is unbearable, i cannot turn my heat on until the car is in motion. I am bringing my car to be fixed under the april service bulletin on tuesday, but wish to file a complaint so that subaru might issue a recall to protect the safety of its customers.

We just had an extended period of snow & cold weather here where i live in oregon.my wrx suddenly developed an extremely strong, toxic, raw fuel smell inside the car when it was first started in the morning.i called my dealer and was told they knew what it was, and that there is a tsb to fix the fuel line leak.was also told that subaru did not think it was a safety issue so would not cover it outside of warranty and wanted $600 to fix!this is most definitely a safety issue! i have to open the windows to get fresh air to be able to breathe and am concerned that the car might catch fire!

Early model year 2002 subaru imprezza wrx - exhibits a very strong raw gasoline odor when the ambient temperature is 60f or below and the engine is cold. On cold days i get a strong fuel smell in the cabin. If you look at the lower part of the intake manifold you can see yellow stains from where fuel has leaked as well as displacement of grim from areas below the fuel hose. I have researched this issue and it is common with my year vehicle yet subaru has not issued a recall despite issuing a service bulletin (#09-36-03). In this bulletin it states that the replacement of a fuel line and hose is needed to correct the problem and partial disassembly of the engine is required to make the fix. It also states that this fix is required to achieve better alignment of the fuel lines.

At first this effect was only apparent when the weather was cold, but now it happens every time i start the car even in bay area weather of 55 f as long as the engine is cold. Subaru dealership will fix it for a 85 dollar part and two hours of service time, which is around 230 dollars, at my expense when it is a factory defect, that is wrong to do in my opinion. In my opinion subaru should fix it for free.

We had a colder than normal spell below freezing for a day.upon driving the subaru wrx 2002 model, i noticed a strong fuel smell coming into the cabin.once returning home examined the engine and noticed fuel puddling under the passenger side intake manifold.i suspect that it is the high pressure fuel line interface/clamp and the rubber hose connected to it under the manifold leaking/ seeping.it's location and fumes pose a fire safety hazard and occupant safety hazard.

There is a fuel leak that i can see underneath the intake manifold. The temperature outside was well below 15 degrees (f). This is an issue experienced by nearly all 2002 subaru impreza wrx owners who live in cold weather. It is addressed in tsb 09-36-03. The problem with the tsb is that it does not fix another smaller leak. I am not sure where that second one is, but i can definitely smell the fuel after getting the car fixed.i do not understand how leaking fuel is not dangerous, but i hope this issue will be resolved. Subaru of america should be required to fix this issue at their expense, instead of the wrx owners getting it fixed for sometimes upwards of $500. During the cold period last week, my2002 subaru impreza wrx had a very strong smell of raw gas. Subaru has issued a tsb # 09-36-03 dated 4/01/03 acknowledging the problem and has a repair kit specifically designed to fix the problem. This problem should result in a recall by subaru and be repaired at subaru's expense. It is a potential explosive/fire event and is a fault in the original design. The dealers will not fix this problem without charging the customers. The repair kit is about $60 but labor is $700-800. Its a safety issueand i'm afraid to drive it like it is.

Started the car first thing in the morning to drive approximately 1.5 miles to the store. Outside temperature was about 48 degrees f. My 2002 subaru wrx suffered the cold start fuel leak problem described in the tsb (fuel rails). Vehicle was purchased used from dealership, but dealer did not address the problem while vehicle was still under warranty.

(1) events leading to problem: while traveling from seattle wa to sun peaks bc, temperature on bc5 hwy reached -27f. (2) failure and consequences: under these circumstances one of the joints connecting a fuel line to an injector started leaking fuel into the engine block. I only noticed this condition based on a very strong smell of fuel each time i stopped the car and by close visual inspection of the injector fuel lines -- i noticed fuel was dripping -- in order to avoid the risk of fire, i had the vehicle towed to select auto of kamloops (subaru dealership). I could detect the condition myself and put a post-it for the subaru dealer. The condition did not repro at normal temperature (above 0f), so the mechanic had to spray freon on the injector lines to repro the failure. I think that the problem is a major one as it (a) entails the risk of getting a fire on the vehicle. (b) is difficult to repro. (3) fixes done to the car:replaced rubber line and clamps.

There is a rubber fuel line linking the injector fuel rail to the hard steel fuel line leading from the fuel tank, that contracts at a different rate than the fuel rail nipple. This causes a fuel leak on the turbo side of the engine. This is a problem that subaru and it's dealers are well aware of as it happens on the 2002-3 subaru wrxs in cold climates. The most alarming aspect of this is not just a leak, but the leak is on the turbo charger side of the engine. The amount of heat in the turbo would ignite vaporized/liquid fuel rather quickly. To me it is really amazing that these things are not bursting into flames all over. The company is also charging their customers for the fix, which is expensive, to a problem that is clearly their fault. Not to mention that leaking raw fuel is an environmental problem.

Vehicle is leaking fuel into the engine bay. The passenger side fuel rail is leaking. Subaru of america is not willing to fix the issue it is happening to a lot of people. The vehicle has gasoline fumes coming in through the vents. The condition is worsened in winter.

Scheduled for repair 12-15-03 i should have been notified and given the option to repair it due to living in a cold climate.

The car seems to have a temperature related fuel leak that always occurs in cool or cold weather and makes no difference if the engine is cold or warm. There is an extremely strong fuel odor in the passenger cabin, so much so that windows must be rolled down in cold weather. The car is off warranty and i've had it in to my mechanic who can't locate a problem. He suggested tightening the fuel cap very snugly after refueling but this has made no difference. The smell occurs almost daily in weather below 35-40 degrees. The car is in good condition and was inspected for pin holes, loose connections in the emissions/fuel system but nothing was found. I occasionally see one or two spots of what smells like gas on the garage floor. I am surprised at the number of similar complaints and that subaru has not taken this seriously.

Today i started my car, it was about 35 degrees outside. As i released the emergency brake and turned up the heat, i smelled gasoline. Thought it was just becuase it was so cold that the fuel did not burn all the way. At lunch i drove to burger king and still smelled the horrible fumes. On my way home it was still there and i had to have the heat on because it was so cold out and i was stuck in traffic. So needless to say i have a splitting head ache and am very frustrated at the information i found on the web. With the millions and millions of dollars car companies make you would think that when there is a problem of this magnatude they would be more than willing to fix the problem.what if the fumes from the gasoline had knocked me out while i was driving home and ran into someone and killed them would'nt it be cheaper to be proactive than reactive?

There is a constant raw fuel smell when driving, to the point of making me feel sick, cant even drive my car without all the windows down, ive reasurched this issue with other models using the same engine & componints that are on the recall list, but i can not get any help from anyone at subaru, even with explaining its the exact same problem as ither the forester or outback... Of a raw fuel smell from a fulty gas line under the manifold,,, not cool that they are willing to compromise my safety to avoid doing the fix, or addmiting the defect affects the 2002 wrx

Fuel rail on 2002 wrx is leaking heavily on the engine. This is a high fire hazard as well as noxious for passengers in the car as it smells heavily of fuel. Since i live in washington state subaru of america has not honored the recall they've put in other states for this exact issue. Subaru has denied warranty repair due to the extended warranty expiring for this issue in 2013. I was never notified of this issue. I am the original owner of this car and have taken it in for every other recall issue that i've been notified of. This is reckless and dangerous. The local repair shop has said they don't think it is correct to charge me for labor and parts that should be covered under warranty by subaru and have directed me to the dealership. The dealership asked me to get authorization from subaru, which was denied. This is a safety issue that should be covered under warranty for the life of the car. It is a bone stock car with no aftermarkets parts or enhancements.

A fuel line under the intake manifold located on the passenger side is leaking gas on cold starts. This is my second time dealing with this issue. As of now, it is only leaking gas when the engine is cold, but the leaking is starting to get worse and faster than before. The first time i had this issue it was leaking gas regardless of engine temperature. It is only a matter of time before it starts to leak at any given moment with a possibility to cause a fire putting my life and others at risk. I live in the state of california and this recall has only been announced for "cold weather" states. It is evident that this fuel line problem has nothing to do with the weather since i live in a warm climate. This probiem is unfixable and time consuming. I had already tried to solve this issue at my local repair shop and it ended up being a waste of time and money. This is clearly a manufacturer's problem. Subaru needs to issue a national recall for this vehicle.

Few days later gear stuck in reverse & car wouldn't budge while in the middle of street. Subaru towed car to metric, couldn't verify complaint as gear became unstuck. New years day, with dropped clutch pedal couldn't get into gear so subaru towed car back to metric. Upon calling soa received # 1072552 from les handley and after signing $500. Auth tear down chg was then told trans/man clutch assembly blown out/ gears stripped/chipped. Soa refuses to authorize dealer to fix the car asserting abused car and driven aggressively. Metric explained manual trans a problem and we see researching website, numerous complaints nearly same identical story of trans & man clutch assemblyblown out/gears stripped/chipped with soa denying repairs asserting abuse. Last week as i was driving to work, the clutch pedal started feeling a bit loose (ie soft until it was depressed half-way) and was sticking to the floor when depressed fully.it became incredibly difficult to shift at all and i was quite fortunate to have not caused any accidents as i was not on the highway.had i been at higher speed and been for example attempting to pass someone and the pedal would have failed in the same way, much more serious consequences would have occurred.it then became impossible to shift into 1st gear on a cold morning until i had pumped the clutch for awhile and let the car warm up. My husband was driving my 2002 subaru wrx in a normal manner when he stopped at a light at an intersection. He went to pull out and could not get intogear. He gave a little gas and attempted to get car to go in first gear, then the lutch went to floor and he could not get car to move, except by drifting. When it was taken to garage, they stated that the clutch springs blew out, the clutch, 2nd gear was stripped of its teeth. Subaru of america is claiming abuse and will not cover under warranty. This car has 35750 miles on it. This car is engineered incorrectly, and is a safety hazard. You can not get car to move when this happens. This is not only a safety issue but a warrranty issue. Someone needs to stop this, before more companies start negating warranties also.

On sunday september 12th, 2004 i was travelling with my mother southbound on the 5 freeway. The traffic was stop and go. I was stopped ,and had put the car into first gear and released the clutch and there was a loud pop. First gear was gone. I drove it home. The following day took it to bob baker subaru in carlsbad, ca. An hour later they called me and told me the failure was a result of driver abuse and/or racing. They denied my claim! i wrote letters to subaru and attempted to make phone calls (most were never returned). On oct. 27th i finally went to pick up the vehicle and paid $700 for them looking at the transmission and $205 for storing the car. It now only has second gear.

On 8/25 my 2002 wrx wagon would not go into any gear,with engine on or off.i called the dealer and was told to have the car towed in,when it was dropped off i was there,the service person tried to shift it and got it to go into gear.when they tried to engage reverse,it ground the gears 4 times,they said the car was not stopped when they tried,i was standing right there,it was not moving!.this car has had transmission concerns before and has been to the dealer on three other visits where they could not duplicate the problem with grinding gears while driving,this could cause in my opinion a saftey issue ,distraction while driving.do we have to experience a transmission locking up causing injury or death before it is delt with?. Was driving the subaru wrx in a normal fashion when the transmission locked up. After having it towed to classic subaru, they opened it up and 2nd gear was stripped of all the teeth. They will not fix it under warranty claiming it was abused. This is not true. There are a large number of these transmissions that are stripping out obviously because they are engineered incorrectly. Driver's seatbelt often fails to retract at top, leaving slack, which sometimes wraps itself around the seat adjustment lever. When pulling to adjust belt, lever can abruptly let go, causing loss of control due to driver suddenly losing support of seat. It's happened to me a few times now, always without incident, as i tend to get my seatbelt sorted out before i start driving.

I work as a valet attendant. I have parked a large number of vehicles. I hadto park this vehicle in a parking spot. To park in this spot i had to make a right to line up for the spot. The car accelerated suddenly. I had all my weight on the brakes to avoid slamming into a wall,i turned hard right and crashed the car against the corner of a concrete column. The airbag deployed during the accident, then i heard a purge and multiple clicking noises. The brakes did not stop the car at all. The breaks felt rock hard before the accident. Again"the brakes did not stop this car from crashing" i suffered a severely fractured hip socket injury. This accident leaves me with the likely hood of needing hip replacement due to hip arthritis. If it wasn't for the airbag i would have suffered severe head and chest injury. I also no longer work as a parking attendant, and having a hard time finding a job. I am not a teenager joyriding . I am an adult, parking cars for a living. I have driven high end vehicles with way more power, but have never experienced any thing like this. Abs kicks in and does not return to normal braking even after regaining contact with the road.attempted to replicate the problem on my own but could never do so consistently.seems to happen over bumpy roads, the abs kicks in, wheel(s) appear to lose traction, but when traction should be regained, the brake pedal practically goes to the floor, the car does not slow down at an acceptable rate, and only after "pumping" the brake pedal does the car then go back to normal (hard) abs braking.while it has never caused an accident, i am concerned about this behavior were it to ever happen in a panic situaiton.

My model year 2002 subaru impreza wrx wagon has had a slight reoccuring problem with what seems to be a faulty abs braking sensor. The car suffers from a drop in pressure of brake pedal feel and brake performance over uneven or bumpy roads. When braking under normal driving conditions if a bumpy or uneven surface is encountered while braking the abs kicks in and there is a loss in control via the brake pedal of the braking force.this condition happens every time the conditions are present as described, and can be quite disconcerting. It is obvious that under panic situations, coupled with less than ideal road surfaces, this condition could prove very dangerous, as the braking distance of the car increases dramatically during this action.

Over rough surfaces (potholes in pavement, rough pavement, railroad crossings, uneven pavement) the abs will kick on at a low speed and it seems, if only for a few moments, that the car is not braking.this happens regularly and i need to drive the vehicle in such a way as to avoid braking on these types of roads by braking early and rolling through the rough areas without the brake pedal depressed.

On multiple occasions i have had the problem where the abs system on my 2002 subaru wrx acts in an unpredicatable manner. The problem occurs when braking on a uneven surface. When this car hits a bump under braking on dry pavement. The abs system can kick in on what feels like all 4 tires. I am sure than in any other car i've had, i wouldn't have had any trouble slowing down.i avoided rear-ending the truck by slowing the car with aggressive engine braking. I also steered towards the other side of the road, where there was no traffic at that moment and the pavement was cleaner, so i could slow down.another time i rear-ended a vehicle that stopped in front of a pothole, although damage was minor. I've also had a large number of scary near - misses with rear-ending other vehicles, and on a few occasions slid out into intersections with frost heaves leading up to a stop sign or stop light, because my braking space estimate was far less than i actually needed.i recently replaced all brake pads and discs. The rear pads fit in the calipers so tightly i had to pound them out with a hammer and punch. Both pads and rotors were worn very unevenly. Replacement rear pads fit in the same way. Then i realized something was wrong with the fit, so i ground down the tabs to get a good snug fit rather than an interference fit and jamming, so they slipped into place normally.after making this change to my brakes, they work very well.i nearly sold the car due to this issue, but instead drove it for a while with the abs system disabled. My local subaru dealer told me this is how abs systems are supposed to work, even though there is clearly a big problem.

While driving on a residential street, well within acceptable speeds, approaching a right hand turn with no traffic i slightly moved left on the road (over the bump strip, but not into the other lane) to get a smoother angle into the turn.upon braking, the drivers front tire squealed/slid, no abs pulse and brake pedal was far closer to the floor than normal.i let off and downsifted to no avail.i hit the curb (only, thankfully) but did extensive damage to my car rendering it undrivable.i now have no faith in my once cherished car and once it is repaired am contemplating replacing it.why havent they fixed this???????!?!?!?

Several times (about once a year on average) since i purchased my subaru wrx in 2001 the brakes briefly fail.the description seems identical to that of the 2010 prius in that there is no braking for a brief time when going over bumps, railroad tracks or simply going downhill on a wet road.the most recent incident i would guess happened in the fall of 2009 when going down a hill with sudden braking required on a wet surface.within the first year of ownership i alerted our subaru dealer of the problem and they did "a firmware update".i don't think this made a difference but since it is a rare but scary occurrence i really could not tell.

Abs brake performance - the abs over reacts to uneven or slick surfaces and fully engages reducing braking effectiveness. This can be caused by rippled or uneven pavement or a manhole cover and can happen under any braking condition from moderate to heavy braking. The only way to regain braking is to let off and then reapply the brakes, the exact opposite of what i've been taught about abs. This condition eventually resulted in a crash and $7000 damage to my vehicle in a braking situation where i don't feel abs action was warranted.

Driving during very light rain in left lane about 30 mph, car in front (about 2-3 car-lengths ahead) starts braking. I pressed the brakes and abs came on without any reason, the car did not slow down almost at all, forcing me to switch the lane quickly to the right. While switching lanes, car started skidding and diving the nose to the right/tail to the left, i tried to correct the nose to the left, but that caused a more dangerous skid to the left, toward oncoming traffic. I turned the wheel right again, trying to regain control, but the car spun out and hit a tree on right side of road with the driver's door. I was taken to a hospital and stayed there overnight for observation, released next day. Nobody was injured, the tree had a few very small scratches.i am still waiting to find out if the car will be repairable or totaled.

Abs failure on multiple occasions. While driving down a steep hill in 6 inches of snow at less than 5 mph the abs kicked in and i could not stop the car. I had no brakes. The car was in deep snow and was not sliding. As i was approaching a multi car accident at 5 mph i had to stop. I turned off the ignition on the car and it stopped instantly. I have found that in deep show going down hill i have zero brakes. I'm forced to use the emergency brakes or to turn off the car. This is at sub 5 mph speeds. This is an all wheel drive car designed for travel on snowy roads.in another incident i was traveling at 55 mph on a windy road when the car in front of me stopped quickly for a right turn. I hit my brakes and had nothing. The abs activated and i was forced to turn into oncoming traffic to avoid a rear end collision. This was on dry pavement. I was following with plenty of room to stop. The dealer refused to look at the car and told me i needed to learn to drive.*la

Abs activates in unnecessary situations.when approaching a stop sign on my street, on clean dry asphalt, the abs activated when going over a small pothole.the brake pedal went to the floor and there was no braking power until i released and reapplied the brake.this exact situation has occurred at least 10-15 times at the same location.i have also experienced the unnecessary abs activation and brake failure in other locations where i have driven over bumps or pavement irregularities.the result is usually the activation of abs, then the loss of braking power, and the requirement that the brakes be released and reapplied.to the best of my knowledge, this is not the porper operation of an anti-lock braking system.this behavior has not yet caused an accident or any damage, but it is easy to see that if i were in closer proximity to other vehicles or objects, the result could be catastrophic.

Traveling on a damp, bumpy asphalt road in seattle (tempurature was in the mid-40's).light ahead turns red - i apply the brakes as usual, but the peddle suddenly sinks about an inch and i feel abs come on.it feels as if the brakes have no stopping power and are only working at about 10%.i let up on the brakes and tried again, and was able to stop before hitting the car in front of me.this has also happened once before, on some metal drawbridge grating.it seems as if the abs comes on in times when it should not, which causes the brakes to practically not work.if a car had been closer in front of me, i would have hit it.

Complete failure of the braking system.during snowy conditions at approximately 15mph, i pressed the brake pedal very softly.the pedal was very stiff and didn't depress at all (no travel at all).the abs didn't activate and no braking occured,i pressed harder and still nothing.the car didn't slide at all, didn't slow and no braking occured at all. I let all pressure off the pedal and again gently pressed the pedal again.the car slowed to a stop like normal.it was -5 deg f. Outside at the time of the incident.it has never happened before or since this incident but in 17 years of driving i've never had a car do this. I would have gone right into the intersection if i hadn't been breaking very early due to the conditions.i stress that the initial application of the brake pedal was very gentle and no matter how hard i subsequently pushed the pedal didn't depress at all at any time untill i let up pressure and tried again.

I was pulling in to a gas stations parking lot at about 15 mph and hit a pot hole with my passanger side front tire at the same time i applyed the brake heavly to slow down for the late seen hole when the brakes go completely hard.it felt as if i wasn't applying the brakes at all, it took a good 10 to 15 ft to come to a complete stop luckly i had enough room to stop. This isn't the first time i have had this happen i also try to slow down to fast once and ran over a parking cirb.the anti lock brakes don't feel like all other cars i have drove (pontiac saturn ford), they never pulse on like the other cars they are just hard.

The vehicle failed to slow down and subsequent hard braking led to loss of control. The rear end swayed to the right and hit the right barrier, then turned around, front right hit the left barrier. The vehicle had history of not being able to stop on surfaces with the slightest bumps, as found on exit ramps and intersections. The vehicle was checked prior to the accident for the brakes by the dealer and had found no problem. Subaru declined to look at the vehicle after the accident for possible manufacturing defect regarding the abs. It is still in my garage for possible inspection.

This has happened several times over the last two years (date is the first incident i recall). On surfaces that are wet, snowy or icy, i cannot brake into a turn. The car does not turn or stop, but merely slides in a straight line and eventually stops after it goes 3 feet or more, depending on my speed when i attempted to take the turn. This happens at all speeds, even when i am going very slowly (less than 5 mph, for example, as to make a 90-degree turn into a parking lot). In order to take two turns on my daily commute, i must come to a complete stop, turn the wheel, and then accelerate into the turn. Amazingly, i have not had an accident due to this problem, though i have had some very close calls. One thing ive found that helps is turning the steering wheel sharply so the front tires are perpendicular to the cars path. I couldnt think of anything else to try, and this seems to make the car stop more quickly while in a slide.the mechanics at my local dealership ran diagnostics and pronounced my brakes fine. I tried to suggest something else to check during a 20-minute phone call with the mechanic, but his only suggestion was that it could be my tires (which are standard and just 2 years old). I have driven other makes of cars with anti-lock brakes and have not had this problem, even on icy, snowy, rain-drenched roads.

I was recently riding with what suburban subaru in vernon/manchester, ct say was 50% life left on my break pads in my 2002 wrx sedan.when stopping for a fast yellow to red light change from about 50 miles an hour their was no response on the break pedal.i quickly took my foot off and pressed again, even harder this time, which engaged the abs and left me coming to a banging abs stop in the middle of the intersection of route 5.luckily all the cars at the intersection noticed what had happened and there was no accident.i just want to make sure this problem with the brakes not responding at all gets recognized and looked into further.however, i can plainly say that after that incident, i do not trust the breaks on my 02 wrx.i plan on keeping this car, but i demand reliable braking like all other drivers.

Antilock brake failure caused accident.a vechicle in front of me stopped quickly so i applied the brakes with moderate to heavy pressure.although i was going only 30-35 mph and had several car lengths to stop, the brakes locked and the pedal went soft and i was unable to control the car causing me to rear-end the vechicle in front of me.i have had similar incidents in the past with the wrx where the abs would trigger when going over a bump with moderate brake pressure and the pedal would go soft (rather than the kickback i expect with abs), but it was never in a situation that would cause an accident.the accident occured on dry pavement, at the posted speed limit, and i do not recall whether i hit a bump during the incident triggering the brake problem.given the distance and the speed, i should have been able to stop well before hitting the car in front of me.in my past experience with abs brakes on other cars, there is strong feedback to the driver during abs operation, not the soft, ineffective pedal that occurs on the wrx.

Today i sent the following email to subaru of america concerning the investigation of abs defect in wrx vehicles. I have experienced the problem on numerous occasions, and on no occasion was i driving in an "aggressive" manner or "hard' braking. Nor was my previous complaint to nhtsa a "parroting" of someone else's problem from the impreza website, as subaru has accused. The abs is overly sensitive to bumpy surfaces and is a safety risk, period.my email to subaru of america:i have just reviewed soa's letter dated 9/10/04 to nhtsa re your investigation of alleged abs problems in wrx's. I am dismayed by soa's inability to document, and refusal to acknowledge, the abs problem. I am insulted that subaru blames the problem on "aggressive driving patterns." the problem regularly occurs at one point in my daily urban commute when i brake for a traffic light over a bumpy surface. I am using only 15% of the braking capability at 20 mph when the abs fault occurs-- hardly "aggressive" or "hard" braking, and hardly a situation that only aggressive performance drivers would encounter. When it occurs, there is a sudden, dramatic reduction in deceleration whichis no longer proportional to pedal pressure, and increased pressure is ineffective while the abs is "confused" by the bumpy surface. Several times i have had scary moments when the drop in deceleration has resulted in nearly rear-ending the vehicle in front of me. I am very puzzled why an event, that for me is so predictable and repeatable, has escaped your analysis.i further take offense to the claim in your letter that many of the complaints to the nhtsa were dishonest repetitions of problems a few had described on an ownerswebsite. Nice try, but i can attest to the validity of the problem in my car, having experienced it dozens of times. Tires were firestone sz-50ep's.brakes stock.after the second incident i installed new front brake pads, hawk hp-plus.not that i thought they would help with the abs problem, i just wasn't happy with the performance of the stock pads.during the installation i bled the brakes and found a lot of _air_ in the system.by a lot, i don't mean little bubbles, i mean a 2-3 inches of air in the clear bleeder tube.since that time i have had no further problems.the abs does continue to be very sensitive, activating even on slightly rippled pavement when braking moderately from 25-30 mph.at least when it activates, the pedal stays firm and the braking force only declines slightly. *nlm

I was traveling on a street with some construction activities approaching an intersection.there was a small road irregularityon the road. This road irregularity spans across both of the front wheels.when i applied the brake (before i can feel the road irregularity), the car continued to leap forward for a moment and the braking distance was much greater then i anticipated and not the normal behavior of the car.have there been a car istrongly believe that my car's abs braking system has a problem.

I was forced to take evasive action and go into the ditch to avoid an accident. After that, i took the car to a dealer. I was able to reproduce the behavior once with a technician in the car. We were driving approximately 15-20 mph and i applied the brakes on a rough section of pavement. The abs pulsed several times, then it stopped pulsing for 2-3 seconds, and then it started pulsing again. During the period when it stopped pulsing, the brake pedal was soft and dropped 1-2 inches. The technician tried to replicate it without success. The technician inspected the system, including checking for diagnostic codes, but could not find a problem.

I own a 2002 subaru impreza wrx wagon, which comes standard with abs brakes. I'd heard through a variety of channels that there was an abs issue with the car, in that under specific circumstances the driver could momentarily lose all braking ability. I had my doubts, having owned the car for 2 years before my incident occurred, but it did finally happen to me. I was coming to a stop at a light that had turned red. There were no cars in front of me. I was traveling about 35-40 mph and began braking with a light-moderate pedal pressure. About 200 feet before the intersection, there is a seam in the pavement and the latter piece of roadway is about 1-2 inches below the part before it. In other words, it's a very small drop off. Upon hitting this drop off and maintaining pedal pressure, the abs briefly cycled (felt as a vibration in the brake pedal) and then the car stopped decelerating for about 2 seconds. It was as if i'd lifted completely off the brake pedal, yet i had not. Once i realized i wasn't going to stop, i released the pedal and reapplied it very quickly. Braking force was returned, as if there were no problem. This is the only time i've experienced the incident. I've driven many abs-equipped cars in the past, and am very familiar with what abs braking feels like. I'm ase certified in braking systems, and have raced both abs and non-abs equipped cars at an amateur level. What i felt was not normal abs operation, and had there been a car stopped at the intersection ahead of me i may well have run into it. I enjoy my car quite thoroughly, and like everything else about it. I'm not 'out to get' subaru. But there is decidedly a flaw in the abs system that many others and now myself have experienced. I just don't want to be caught off guard again.

I would like to add to your review of the abs issues with these cars.it is a known problem among all wrx owners that the abs system is faulty.i have been in several instances where i was trying to stop and would hit a pothole and the abs became overactive and i actually went partly through the light.it only takes a small bump to drastically hamper the braking performance. The most recent occurance was just last month.

Many incidents.i was driving at a low rate of speed, around 25, coming up to a stop sign and there was a car ahead of me. A second or so after i applied the brakes i went over some small bumps on dry pavement and it felt like abs was coming on, the pedal dropped, but then it went way down and it wasn't pulsing. Basically the car felt like it lost the majority of its braking power and did not return until i lifted up and pushed down again briefly. I've had this happen many times where a small amount of bumps in the road will cause the abs "overreact" for lack of a better term.

My 2002 subaru wrx has a defective abs system. When braking moderate to hard and the car hits a bump, the abs "kicks in" and reduces brake pressure, but after the road has settled the brake pressure doesn't return. You can press the brake pedal to the floor but brake pressure doesn't increase. Only if you lift your foot completely off the brake pedal and then reapply, does braking power return. This is dangerous and could cause an accident if you have to panic stop and there is an imperfection in the road. My car has done this since i took delivery march 13th, 2001

When trying to slowdown and driving over small bumpsbrake system will not catch, andvehicle will not slow down. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.

The body is deteriorating so fast.i laugh at the subaru commercial where the parents give their kids the old car.i would not trust the old subaru to keep my children safe.i've had to replace the frame, and am letting the body rust.the sickening smell of fumes like gas in the winter are horrible.when i keep the subaru in the garage, it makes my whole house toxic with fumes.subaru will not honor the recall on it, because i am in ohio, and ohio is not a "cold-weather" state, but do they realize we have tons of snow and frigid temperatures in the winter.i can't stand by subaru no longer, but cannot afford a new car. When i do, it will not be a subaru.

I'm filing my complaint with all the others about the strong fuel smell during the cold months.i cannot believe ohio is not included in the recall.i've taken my car to the dealer numerous times to be told that the car is okay.frankly, this past cold winter has been awful.the smell makes it's way into the house.it is awful.i cannot believe subaru does not believe ohio is cold and will not stand by its autos.also, when i brought the auto in for a recall on the front control arms, they only rustproofed them and never told me the frame was rusted out.this was at 125,000 miles.this auto has been meticulously cared for.if this car is meant to be in all kinds of weather, why can't it stand up past 125,000 miles.ridiculous!i have three other vehicles from other brands with many more miles, one car of which is stored outside in the winter, and all the other autos have great lasting frames.considering i had only 125,000 miles, i saved the money and made this expensive repair.com'on subaru make a car that lasts!!!!!

Subframe near passenger/right front control arm is rusted through and has holes. Subaru of cherry hill, nj stated that it should be replaced and was at significant risk of breaking when removed for control arm recall (wvx34).dealership said the case with pictures was reported to subaru headquarters and dealership stated it was the first time they have seen it. I discovered many other cases reported dating back as far as may 2009. Documented with pictures of my own.

Driving southbound on i-55 for morning commute in the leftmost lane when with no discernible cause the car began to drift back and forth across the center lane and left lane. The car minimally responded to any steering inputs. I had to crank the wheel almost a turn and a half to get my car over to the shoulder. Fortunately, there were no cars near me when this happened so i did not strike any vehicles. I got the car towed to a local shop and the service person quickly glanced around underneath it and immediately noticed that the control arm had rusted through on the passenger side. I came back later that day and they showed me the car on the lift where both control arms were thoroughly rusted as well as the subframe. I paid to get the one repaired but still don't drive the car as i don't feel safe until the other is taken care of as well.

I owned the car for 5k miles and the front wheel bearings are bad. This is an expensive repair for a 2 year old car. I searched the internet and found this to be a common problem for subarus. The drivetrain is noisy, so it is hard to detect during normal driving and can really damage the car if not found.

Reference: recall no. 11v-464, nhtsa campaign no. 11v464000the corrosion discovered in my subaru 2002 wrx is far more extensive than that covered by the recall resulting in cityside subaru dealership (1-761-641-1900) identifying the vehicle not safe to drive.their assessment of the dangerous rusting, rotting and necessary repairs is quoted here (i can provide a facsimile of their assessment upon your request). There is extensive rusting and rotting as well as parts that have already broken. Lower control arm for my 2002 subrau wrx rusted completely and broke, which also caused the sway bar to be ripped off. Thankfully it only happened pulling out of the driveway and not on the highway.

The passenger side lower control arm on our 2002 subaru wrx wagon snapped rendering the car inoperable. The car has been towed to a mechanic.when i looked under the car you could see the arm was rusted through. Once the car was loaded on the rollback there was a visible pile of rust on the pavement.

Traveling on a damp, bumpy asphalt road in seattle (tempurature was in the mid-40's).light ahead turns red - i apply the brakes as usual, but the peddle suddenly sinks about an inch and i feel abs come on.it feels as if the brakes have no stopping power and are only working at about 10%.i let up on the brakes and tried again, and was able to stop before hitting the car in front of me.this has also happened once before, on some metal drawbridge grating.it seems as if the abs comes on in times when it should not, which causes the brakes to practically not work.if a car had been closer in front of me, i would have hit it.

I work as a valet attendant. I have parked a large number of vehicles. I hadto park this vehicle in a parking spot. To park in this spot i had to make a right to line up for the spot. The car accelerated suddenly. I had all my weight on the brakes to avoid slamming into a wall,i turned hard right and crashed the car against the corner of a concrete column. The airbag deployed during the accident, then i heard a purge and multiple clicking noises. The brakes did not stop the car at all. The breaks felt rock hard before the accident. Again"the brakes did not stop this car from crashing" i suffered a severely fractured hip socket injury. This accident leaves me with the likely hood of needing hip replacement due to hip arthritis. If it wasn't for the airbag i would have suffered severe head and chest injury. I also no longer work as a parking attendant, and having a hard time finding a job. I am not a teenager joyriding . I am an adult, parking cars for a living. I have driven high end vehicles with way more power, but have never experienced any thing like this. Now i have difficulty driving, and i afraid to get behind the wheel. I am a male driver with 20+ years of driving experience, but i am looked at as a reckless driver for wrecking this car.

Cruise control did not release when applying brakes twice. Vehicle continued going at 67 mph. Fortunately i downshifted and stopped vehicle without hitting the 6 other vehicles at the stop light.

2002 subaru wrx wagon. No warning, drivers side window (electric) snaps out of sheet metal bending the living crap out of it, snapping numerous clips and bending the window track. Found bolts on the inside of door were sheared off. Car has only 33,000 miles. Unacceptable!*la

No apparent or known events or causes leading to failure.no rock chips or dings at origin site at upper edge of windshield where failure began.my windshield was in good condition when last driven with no visible breaks.the next time i drove it, the windshield had begun to crack from top edge in fromt of the driver's seat and had extended approximately 8 inchess.after parking the car, i marked the spot at the end of the crack.the next day the crack had extended another 3 inches with no driving or movement involved. The crack is now approximately 2 feet in total length.i have not had time to have it fixed due to no local dealers or glass repair shops.however, i am currently planning a trip to lubbock (100 miles one way) to have it replaced as well as answer a vehicle recall i recently received.if the windshield needs to be kept available, i will need to know soon so i can notify my dealer.

I now have an eight inch crack running from the base of the windshield towards the upper right corner.there were no visible chips or cracks the day before and the car was garaged.there are numerous threads at clubwrx.net and i-club.com pertaining to this very problem with subaru's wrx windshields.dt

Windshield is too weak. A small pebble caused a large damage area and crack that extended across whole windshield.

I've had several windshields cracked already, and had to be replaced.with the other 10 cars i've owned, never a windshield replacement, now two with this one in two years.other impreza owners have advised me of similar problems.

Windshieldhas numerous pits and one large crack that has grown 2 inches in the past day. Windshield is too brittle, everything that hits this windshield damages it. Car only has 4,000 miles.*nlm

Unexplained cracked windshield

The windsheild cracked on its own without any impacts onto it, while parked in the garage over night.the crack starts at the top of the windshield on the driver's side goes down and turns towards the passanger side.this same exact crack appeared to many other wrx owners whom i have contacted over the internet.please windshield cracked while vehicle was parked.
