Both fuses on the cooling system fans failed within the same drive.i checked the one marked in the 1998 legacy owners manual for the cooling fan and it was number 13 in page 11-7.i checked for the other one and it was under the hood and it was night time and i didn't have a flashlight or light.i could count where the fuse was and in the book it stated it was # 25.i pulled the fuse 25 and it checked out good and i put it back in the slot.however, i checked in the day time under the fuse cover under the hood and it indicates that fuse #22 is the correct one.i checked that and it was blown.i notified subaru a month ago and have not heard back from them about this issue.it seems though that there should be a change in the manual as it would have probably made a difference in this situation.the safety issue is that with both fan fuses blown the vehicle can stop due to an overheat at an unexpected time and cause and engine failure that can lead to an accident.the number 25 is actually a spare fuse area and does not have an electrical connection but the number 22 is a different configuration with a vehicle that has an accessory power socket in some vehicle.i am not sure you would classify this as a safety problem but i am informing you if you do. *nlm**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*768183

1998 subaru outback showed signs of overheating as temperature gauge rose up past the usual midline and cold air inside car from air conditioner suddenly got warmer.i pulled over and coolant was over flowing from overflow reservoir through the cap.i drove with the heater on full power and made it to a repair facility and remove the thermostat which had seized.replaced the thermostat and radiator cap ($30) and everything was fine until four months later (march 2004) when car showed signs of over heating again (rise in inside air conditioned air temperature from cold to warm).took car to rallysport engineering in costa mesa, ca and mechanic could not find symptoms of head gasket failure although this is what he thought it was.he added stop leak, new thermostat, and new coolant ($150 parts/labor) and the problem was resolved although the temperature gauge reading was a little higher than it was when using original equipment (prior to november).now, july 2004, car has almost overheated again.i took the car to south coast subaru in costa mesa, ca and they stated that it was a head gasket failure and that they could smell the exhaust fumes through the overflow reservoir.the estimate to fix the repair will be $1500 parts and labor. *la

Head gasket on my '98 outback failed.dealer said not uncommon.he has 3 more waiting for head gaskets.seems a number of head gasket failures on the subaru discussion group on edmunds.com townhall.fortunately, mine was discovered with no engine damage. The cost of repair was $2500.00. Quite a financial drain for me.some talk on discussion group wondering if a design problem with the 2.5 liter engine.subaru emailed me that there is no problem with head gaskets and that all mechanical things fail with time, some sooner and some later.on the subaru discussion group, a number of the head gaskets were at low mileage.mine was at 94,000 miles

Complaint is for subaru of america. I own a 98 subaru legacy outback and the cooling system malfunctioned and the head gaskets blew. I looked online and there are hundreds of owners on a multitude of sites who are experiencing or have experienced this exact problem. Clearly the problem is with the vehicle and not any owner's operation of the vehicle, and therefore the corporation who has caused its customers expense should bear the burden financially for fixing this problem.

While driving vehicle overheated. Thishappened three times. When taken to get serviced the third time it was determined that it was due to the head gasket. *tc

The headgasket burned through. Replaced headgasket, had heads milled. Now exactly 1 1/2 years later in april 2003 the car is overheating, everyone says the car should not be doing that, but it is.it is alot of money for a car that is only 5 yrs. Old and having major engine problems.

While drivingat 70 mph, and with no warningvehicle stalled, causingthe driver to lose control. Owner had contacteddealership on four separate occasions, butproblem still occurring.

Engine overheating every half mile with engine reservoir overflowing.after $1300 of replacing thermostat, timing belt, belt tensioner, water pump, flushing the cooling system, and compression tests, i was told i had a blown head gasket.i was told the replacement would cost an additional $2,200 at least.

Overheating, water leaking, head gasket problem.

Late on the night of 09/01/05 my wife, her son, daughter and two (2) grand children were traveling to omaha, ne for the long labor day weekend in a 1998 subaru legacy outback wagon with 123,000 miles.they got as far as the outskirts of kearney, ne when they noticed a loss of power and saw heavy smoke/steam coming from the tail pipe of the car.they immediately pulled over and were assisted by a ne state trooper.$600 later the car, which apparently suffered from head gasket failure, was finally towed to the duteau subaru dealership in lincoln, ne.they verified the head gasket failure and that the engine seized.subaru usa was notified and asked if they would cover any of the damage, which as it turns out includes a new/rebuilt engine.the response was it's not under warranty, you didn't purchase an extended warranty and"we are sorry for any inconvenience that this has caused your family."i contacted the dealership from which the car was purchased, namely burt subaru.i was told that head gasket failure was a frequent problem with 1998, 1999 and 2000 subaru legacy outback wagons.if this was such a problem, why did subaru fail to issue a recall to fix the defective gasket?my wife an i are now faced with having to sell the car to duteau subaru for $500 to $1,000, rent a car to return to denver, then rush to try to find a used vehicle so she can get to and from work.i responded to subaru usa's condolences but your space limitation prohibits me from including such response here.

Multiple problems with engine1.seal leak at approximately 48,000 miles, burning oil smell, corrected at replacement of timing belt at scheduled 105k--not detected by dealer while under warranty (60k warranty).2.failure of head gasket at 110k3. Failure of 2 cam seals at 158k4. Failure of additional (remaining) 2 cam seals at 165k (mechanic initially indicated this was rare and unfortunately, dure to cost, did not recommend replacing all 4 cam seals--bad choice--$600 parts and labor each occurrence #3 and #4.

Complaint received via e-mail.the temperature gauge was in the hot range while driving.the cooling system checked out okay, but was told that the car was low on coolant.the consumer refilled coolant, went out of country, and 2 weeks later encountered the same problem.a month later, while driving, coolantleaked out again, and the head gasket was bad.this was a common problem with these vehicles.*sc

Engine began to overheat only when being driven, does not overheat when idling. I have replaced the thermostat, water pump, and timing belt but it still overheats. While doing research on the internet, i found the carsurvey.org site with many references to this being a known issue, a head gasket problem. Based on the number of similar complaints, subaru has a design problem that should have been recalled or at least a warning of some type send out. What can be done about this issue?

1998 subaru outback 2.5l motor head gasket failure.

Engine overheats. Two subaru dealer service centers said they could not find the problem, and started an seemingly endless replacement of thermostats, and even the radiator. The problem continues, and now that i am over 60k miles, with my warranty expired, they suddenly say it is a problem with the head gasket, which will probably cost over $2,000 to replace. I now find out that there are numerous problems with the head gaskets of 1994-1998 subarus, but there has never been a recall. Why?

My car overheated and died on the highway. It was determined that the head gasket had failed -- it was replaced, and the engine was tuned in associated ways. One month later, the car overheated again, with coolant leaking out of the engine. Once again the head gasket was replaced, as well as the water pump, which the dealer said may have been the original problem. I have had the car back for one week now, and it's working fine. Each time the car overheated, it was soon after i turned on the a/c (and the a/c didn't work well either time -- i.e., warm air came out of the vents). My a/c is working okay, now.

Overheating, water leaking, head gasket problem.

Appears i have a blown head gasket on my 1998 2.5loutback.coolant contains oil , coolant reservoir fills up rapidly with coolant when driven on the highway.coolant never returns to the radiator after cooling down.*la

We bought a 1998 subaru outback in 2004. At approximately 110,000 miles, we experienced a catastrophic overheating of the engine due to a faulty head gasket. The overheating caused approximately $3,000 worth of damage to the car. The head gasket, radiator, thermostat, water pump, oxygen sensors and (2) catalytic converters all had to be replaced. We have since learned that this is a common problem for subarus of this vintage. There are hundreds of anecdotal reports of people having this exact problem on the internet, and our mechanic tells us he fixes at least one of these problems per week at his shop. Clearly, this is a defective product.

Head gasket failure in subaru legacy outback 1998. Engine overheated which lead tolead to smoke coming out under the hood and subsequent warping of engine heads. I hard to replace gasket heads but i am told there is no guarantee this would not happen again since there is an apparent design flaw in the 2.5l engines.

Cylinder #4 exhaust vale failure in july of 2004. Subarudealer prestige imports pulled head and replaced valve. They insisted the cause was "bad gasoline."april 2005 car is found to have high level of co2 in cooling system. Subaru dealer prestige imports refuses to do a leak down test to determine which head gasket has failed. Pulls both heads at a cost of close to $3,000. Refused to acknowledge that they removed the head in july 2004 to replace the valve and refuse to acknowledge that this may have been the cause of the july 2005 failure. Told me "we've seen this before." refused to call subaru usa because "they would just laugh at us." in a meeting withprestige imports gm jim borreli he indicated that this is a common problem and promised to contact subaru usa he never did and would not return my phone calls. Subaru usa has been extremely unhelpful and claims that they have nothing to do with authorized dealer repairs or issues with head gaskets on 2.5 l type 1 engines. This is an very common problem apparently. Almost every auto mechanic in america is familiar with it. On the nhtsa complain site i counted at least 18 head gasket related complaints. A search of the web brings up hundreds if not thousands more., why has the nhtsa ignored these problems and not acted in the best interest of costumers?

The head gasket blew, which resulted in coolant leaking into the cylinder walls. While parked and turned off. The engine, which is a 2.5 liter, must be replaced. The 2.5 liter engine has a history of enigine failure. Has anyone made a claim? has there been research or a recall of any kind?

Blown head gasket at 105,000 miles. My research indicates that this is a very common failure for this engine/model year. It cost me $3400 for a new short block/labor to effect repairs.

Driving a 1998 subaru awd legacy outback.on june 6, 2006 while on a short trip in vehicle, returned home to see smoke (not steam) coming from engine block.the vehicle had overheated, and had been suffering occasional loss of power while driving prior to this time (approx 1 week).drove approx .5 mi to dealer next day to get checked out along with 90,000 mile service (mileage on vehicle was 91,058).dealer called to inform that he had found leaking head gaskets with leaks at the valve covers and hydrocarbons in the cooling system.informed that head gasket would need to be replaced and the head resurfaced (potential replacement of block but this was not needed nor was a valve job) and that we should also replace water pump, timing belt, and engine shield as long as the engine is out.my research on the web indicates that this problem is epidemic, local mechanics i've spoken with say that this is a very common issue and that subaru america will not step up to the plate.i called subaru, with my complaint and while admitting no responsibility offered $500 credit toward repairs which eventually came to more than $3000. Replaced parts include head gasket, head resurfacing, seals, water pump, hoses, thermostat, timing belt and tensioner, separator plate. When i called again to ask them to step up on this issue they failed to offer additional help.as i understand it a blown head gasket can lead to a cracked engine block which could indeed lead to a very serious problem.a simple web search on this issue found dozens of similar complaints of this very serious and expensive problem.

Consumer states that while driving and with no warningvehicle will stall ,and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer notified.

Took my subaru to dealer for 60,000 mile check.he advised me that my head gasket was about to fail and needed replacement.he also informed me that failure of the head gasket in 1998 outbacks was common.this repair is very costly (about $1500), and failing to make it could cause catastrophic damage to the engine.

Legacy outback with 2.5 l engine began to overheat with coolant boiling over into resevoir. The car was taken to repair shop. They replaced thermostat, tested for hydrocarbons in system, pressured tested cap and system and flushed radiator. Car still overheated and was returned to repair shop and tested for hydrocarbons in the antifreeze with negative results. No problem was identified. Engine continued to overheat and was taken into repair shop while the pointer was off the top of the temperature gauge. This time hydrocarbons were identified in the coolant and problem was identified as a blown gasket. Manager reported that the week before another subaru owner had the same problem with same difficulty in identifying the cause. Repairs cost $1,400. Had a similiar report for another subaru owner but work was done with pressure on dealer after initial refusal.

Blown head gasket on 1998 subaru legacy outback at ~70k, just out of warranty,.this problem occurred in 2003, but given the continuation of complaints from current subaru owners experiencing this problem, it seems highly negligent of subaru to deny responsibility for addressing this problem.this is a major problem on subaru's dating from 1997 forward.repair cost in excess of $2,500.this problem continues to arise on subaru engines, yet the company has done nothing to reimburse owners for cost.

Timing belt failed.

The engine over heated, and the dealer replaced the thermostat and water pump, however the problem continued, and the entire engine had to be replaced. Also the brake light and marker lights were replaced.

1998 subaru outback - blown head gasket, resulted in over heating.my mechanic estimates $2500 (assuming there is no other damage to the engine).we are also checking prices for used engines to possibly replace the existing engine.mileage was approximately 129000 miles.

Catastrophic failure of a major engine component which is considerably outside the expected statistical failure rate(based on my research of complaints by other purchasers of this model subaru automobile), resulting in significant costs to repair. At approximately 56000 miles the head gaskets on my 1998 subaru outback with the 2.5l engine failed.the cost to repair was $ 1880.00. I contacted subaru in an effort to get them to absorb at least part of the cost since the car was well within the mileage warranty period, but was slightly outside the time warranty.their response was sorry tough luck. I indicated to subaru that a component of this nature with such a high failure rate, was obviously due to a significant design or manufacturing defect.their response was, again, they were not goint to do anything about it. Someone needs to put pressure on subaru to make this a recall item.

Car overheated.towed to garage.they replaced thermostat and tested.ran ok for about 20 miles.overheated again.towed to garage.now the diagnosis is that i need a new head gasket.this car has less than 90,000 miles and has been maintained flawlessly.*la

Blown head gasket.seems to be a manufacturing problem, considering the number of blown head gaskets on subaru 2.5l engines.contact subaru mechanics to obtain unusual high numbers.

Oil was leaking from the top of the engine on the right side near the rear oil galley plug, the oil leaked down onto the exhaust causing and odor to come through the vents.nlm

On 1/15/01 beard subaru diagnosed and repaired my engine for an oil leak.i paid $654.50 for them to remove the transmission and reseal baffle plate as well as reseal oil pump, questionable cam seals (referring to paperwork from dealer).on 3/23/01 while driving on the highway, check engine light went on and simultaneously car completely died.beard subaru diagnosed engine seized due to drop in pressure w/in engine.upon several contacts w/ subaru of america, they have offered to pay 50% to rebuild engine, which has been verbally estimated at $2,500.beard subaru unable to explain cause of engine seize, but denies it is related to recent repair of engine leak.subaru of america requires me to accept or deny offer to of "courtesy for my patronage" 50% by wed. 4/4/01.i bought my vehicle brand new at beard subaru and have maintained it faithfully.i question a defect within my vehicle, or a direct correlation to the recent work conducted by beard subaru.i requested written documentation.they diagnosed my vehicle on 3/27/01.on 3/30/01 i received a message from beard subaru they would have to get back to me "next week".they are aware i begin a new job on 4/2/01 requiring me to rent a vehicle until my situation is resolved.subaru of america has offered to pay 50% car rental fee for 5 days.is there a way to have a second opinion before i am required to respond to subaru of america's deadline by 4/4/01?i am weary to accept an agreement that no one has provided a second opinion, they have failed to provide a written estimate of what i will be required to pay "after just paying $654.50 for an engine leak"and i am being told i must respond to the offer by 4/4/01 or i will not be assisted.

Check engine light blinking and engine runs rough.

I own a 1998 subaru outback.: vin #[xxx]. On the date below, the timing belt on my car, which had 53 thousand miles on it at the time, broke and resulted in a catastrophic engine failure. This forced me to buy a used engine. Fortunately, i was only driving at 20 mph and was able to safely pull over. Had this happened at interstate highway speed the result might have been very different. Subaru's own maintenance schedule says that the timing belt should be inspected at 60 thousand miles. I've been in touch with the company but they don't seem to be very responsive or forthcoming. Thank you for your attention to this matter.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Exhaust system leaks fumes into the ventillation system.

Engine overheating started 10 months ago on long trips only.overheating was common when engine was under heavier than normal loads for long periods of time(climbing hilss, etc.).fluid in radiator was eventually deplented leading to sharp rise in engine temperature.lately this has been worse as only 30 miles of normal driving will cause the same symptoms.the fault turned out to be a head gasket failure on subaru r2.5l type 1 engines.the coolant was being forced out of the radiator by the slow leak of exhaust gases in the coolant around the radiator.this vechicle has been serviced since new by only the local subaru dealer.a search on the internet for subaru 2.5l engines 1996-1999 (legacy) turned up multiple hits for owners with this same problem.failure is as low as 40k miles to over 100k for the same problem.this multi-layer gasket for thetype 1 engine has be redesigned 6 times, leading one to surmise that the head gaskets are defective.the type2 engine also has this failure but this has been intercepted by subaru of america by adding a "lubricant" to the coolant, ie: block sealer.this engine should have been recalled to replace the multiple defects which subaru will only do on type 2 engines and only if the owner knows to ask for the "secret waranty". Given that there is no other choice, i plan to pull the engine myself and fix the problem.the dealer wants over $2k to do the same work.

The consumer has been experiencing problems with exhaust pumps.whe vehicle is parked or when vehicle is started up, consumert can smella sulphur smell.the manufacturer has yet to be contacted.

Safety issue: seal failure causes oil to leak onto hot exhaust (fire hazard). Mr

My subaru outback has dripped a little oil from the front ever since i bought the car new and had a burning smell.i took it back 2 times in the first year but they didn't do anything except tell me it was transit paint burning off.i took it back when i was 1000 miles out of my warranty because it was worse and smelled burning more.they told me it was the oil pump seal but wouldn't cover it under warranty.they said if i had been having regular work done through the dealer they might have been able to work something out.since then it is worse and the burning smell is very bad.i know of 2 other subaru legacy's with the same problem and a $500 to $700 fix.i was also told by a mechanic that there have been some fires in subarus due to this problem and dripping on the catalytic convertor.

The contact owns a 1998 subaru outback.since october of 2007, the contact smelled fuel inside the passenger compartment.he took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnosis and they stated that the failure was due to the fuel metal nose.the nose corroded and caused fuel to leak.the dealer will replace the nose metal at the cost of $278.the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty; therefore, they would not assist with the repair.the failure mileage was 122,000 and current mileage was 124,000.

As my wife and i were filling up our 98 subaru legacy outback we noticed a smell of gas fumes on the way home as i backed the car into the driveway i noticed the smell of fuel even stonger. I went to the back and looked under the right rear and to my surprise the fuel filler neck was leaking fuel!! i placed a oil change pan underneath and to this day i still haven't fixed it. Don't know were to begin with it and i'm thinking it's a design flaw seems like there is heavy corrosion on the very low part of the filler pipe and that's were it's leaking from. I'm going to try and have it repaired but at what cost. I think that this should be addressed to and by subaru of north america as a potentially dangerous design flaw and legal liabilty.

The gas fill pipe leaks gasoline.there is a plastic shield next to it that catches dirt, sand, etc and then keeps the outside of the pipe wet for weeks after any rainy drive.this led to the pipe rusting out and leaking gasoline on the road, driveway and garage.

Fuel (gasoline) filler neck for the 1998 subaru legacywagon rusts out.mechanic indicated very common problem with this year make and model.very poor design because the tube is behind a plastic molding that accumulates dirt, salt, water, and rots the tubing causing a chronic leak of gasoline potentially over the exhaust system. Recall and repair is needed.

I was driving on interstate 90 in idaho at 62 mph when the hood latch failed. The hood was secured down all the way before the incident and had not been opened in two weeks. There had been over 100 miles of highway driving over 60 mph since the hood was last opened. The hood flew up with no safety catch or hesitation and slammed into the windshield. The windshield was shattered, the hood bent and the roof dented. The rear view mirror flew off inside. I was able to get to the side of the road and the person following me on the interstate pulled over and helped me tie it down to be able to leave the scene. We both determined it was latch failure. It had the potential to cause a serious accident as my front vision was completely blocked.

Driving on highway ~60 mph. Hood latch released spontaneously. Hood flew back, shattering windshield. I started to lose control, as i couldn't see, but recovered and, peering through small area under hood was able to get off onto the shoulder before we got killed because of this unexpected defect.

Parking brake would not hold unless it was pulled up to the very top notch, brake failed causing vehicle to roll into a tree resulting in damage to the vehicle.

On october 6, 2004, i was coasting into a parking space in my 1998 subaru legacy outback.my headlights were facing a curb, sidewalk, and cement brick building, and i touched the brakes to prevent bumping the curb.as soon as my foot hit the brake, the car vroomed as if the throttle had been fully opened, and the car continued moving forward.i pressed the brake harder, but the car seemed to take off on it's own and was totally out of my control.the all-wheel drive vehicle easily bumped up the curb, and the car flew into the air and crashed into the side of the building.the car was totaled by the insurance company.fortunately, i was wearing my seat belt (the air bags did not deploy).the entire incident happened very fast and was totally unexpected.although i am thankful that there was no pedestrian walking on the sidewalk when it happened and that i am alive to be writing this, i am convinced that this was a car malfunction that should be corrected in this vehicle.

1998 subaru outback - steering becomes jerky when backing or going forward at slow speeds and while making tight turning radiuses.local repair shop called a local subaru dealer and they said that they have seen some incidents of this problem but know of no fix.it was said that the vehicle is safe to drive.the suspected problem is thought due to uneven regulation of the wheel speed in the all wheel drive regulator as one turns sharply.in a sharp turn the wheels on the inner curve of the travel of path need to travel at a slower rpm than the wheels of that are on the outer curve of the path of the vehicle.this jerky motion even if not unsafe devalues the car for any possible resale value thus compromising my investment in it.the jerky motion of the wheels when turning as in parking or backing out of the parking stall is noticeable and somewhat disconcerting to the point of my thinking that it may be less safe than i a currently led to believe by the car repair shop and the local subaru dealer that advised.i think this problem warrants further investigation to see if others are being effected and if there is any evidence of damage or failure due to the problem.thanks.sincerely,[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The automatic transmission failed with just 61,000 easy miles. The failure was in the clutch assembly (it would not decelerate when taking pressure off the gas pedal). I took it to the dealer and the manager told me that the drive train was technically out of warranty and that i would be responsible for a new transmission. (before 60,000 i had the dealer check out the whole car and they could find nothing. When the transmission failed i took it in again and the mechanic told me "nothing is wrong"...i am not kidding; they were not competent enough to know that the transmission was not performing properly!!).after that experience there was no way i was going to replace the transmission with another subaru product.i took it to aamco for a rebuild. The mechanic there told me that the factory settings for the clutch assembly were set at 50 thousandths and should have been set at 15 thousandths or less. In other words, the factory built the transmission to self-destruct.when i approached takao saito, president of subaru about this problem, he had linda fouch contact me by telephone. She promised to help out with the repair bill because the failure was so close to the warranty. When she discovered that i was not interested in litigaton, she promptly forgot her promise and failed to respond to any further correspondence!if subaru is to keep its loyal customer base, it needs to aggressively address the problem of quality control and mend the bad experiences of its patronage.

I was parking my car to go to the video store with my son.it appeared to lurch forward, speeding up, and did not come to a stop until it hit four other cars, and finally plowed into a large 4x4 broadside, with enough speed to push it into another car.my airbags deployed, and my disabled child fell out of the passenger side onto the pavement.paramedics where called and he was determined to have minor injuries.i had previous problems with the key sticking, and sometimes unexplained minor speedups int he transmission, but didn't realize how severe it was.now i understand this is a possible, serious problem with my vehicle.the car is considered totalled, but hasn't been disposed of as yet.police took pictures at the scene.please help me figure this out.

Transmission/ driveshaft failure.

1998 subaru legacy outback wagon automatic transmission 86,000 miles. Purchased used many years ago with about 10,000 miles. My sister's car, she was driving alone. Experienced driver.about two months ago she came around a corner on a 30 mph road near her home. Light snow on the ground (amherst, massachusetts) she could not control the car, and it slid around. She phoned me and was very upset at losing control. Commented that the car had not felt quite right. I suggested loose lug nuts, badly inflated (almost new) tires, bent rim, defective tire, alignment.all checked out fine. Then i mentioned suspension. She took it to her mechanic who replaced both rear struts.car still unpredictable. Returned to mechanic who then test drove car and decided that it was a problem similar to that of his parents' similar car: power was not being proportioned properly to the four wheels. He replaced existing transmission / transaxle / differential lubricant with some more specialized lubricant. (amalieama 1607881297 dextron lll atf)at this time my sister is trying this out to see if it does the trick.since this defect affects the safety of the vehicle i thought that you should know. I drove older 4wd audis, owned military 4wd trucks, and cars with limited slip differentials. I was always aware of the need for specific lubricants. I do not think thatthe average car owner should be. Was there a secret advisory or recall?

Intermittently, automatic transmission will not shift into second gear. It goes into neutral and will continue to rev up to anywhere between 5500 rpm and redline before it shifts. This has been an ongoing problem for the past year. It usually happens at least once each time it is driven. We have taken it to subaru of santa cruz in the past and they could not identify a problem. When the 'check engine' and 'at oil temp' lights came on, we took it to subaru of santa cruz. The diagnostic computer indicated that the speed sensor needed to be replaced. Once replaced, the problem did not occur for about 5 days, but then began occurring again.

Consumer had some play in steering wheel. Later, consumer was on highway doing about 65mph, slowing downand steering started to shake. There was a knocking noise, and it was very hard to control. Vehicle was towed todealer, and they found a broken axle.both boots onside of the axle were not damaged so the reason ofaxle breaking was unknown.

Oil leak from band axle resulted in fire.(qcaw)

The inner axle boot is leaking and needs a different grease which the service bulletin says to replace it with but the grease is on back order, the rear pinion bearing is noisy and can be heard while driving 35-45 mph.nlm

I have had continuos problems with the clutch on my 1998 suabru outback.since the car has been purchased i have had the cluch replaced 3 times, and it is now due to go in again.a common problem is "bucking" under load (1st & second).there are countless similar storied available on the internet.subaru needs to be held accountable for this issue as it affects the majority of subaru owners.

Clutch chatter on my 98 subaru outback wagon.problems from day one.subaru 'fixed' the problem a few time under warranty, but to this day, there is severe chatter in the clutch.

Subaru outback (1998) clutch failure.notorious problem!replaced entire clutch assembly, fly wheel, master cylinder and slave cylinder at my cost!!!dealer would not cover.the clutches on outbacks are lemons!class action suit from all owners is a real possibility because subaru has not taken advantage of a "recall".this is a terrible thing (money and time and worry) to see over and over on the internet forums, and experience personally.*la

Have a 1998 subaru outback. Bought it new in 1998. Has roughly 90000 miles. In the first year after purchase clutch went. Dealer replaced clutch free of charge (didn't want to, though). Read on the internet that there was a known clutch problem with the outback and a lot of people had similar problems. Clutch was never, and has never been "right". The clutch has been looked at on several different occasions by different mechanics. None have been able to determine what the problem was. The clutch pedal will fade and drop to the floor (requies bare foot to grab the pedal w/toes to pull back up) sometimes eventuallyfailing completely, other times, miraculously, returning to working order.we are out of warranty range, so we don't expect much from subaru, however we would like to register a complaint.we would never buy another one.i am putting down the date of the most recent failure event, which was yesterday.

In hot weather, especially in slow-moving traffic, the clutch pedal will not return after being depressed.the first incident happened in may 2001, but the dealer could find nothing wrong.after the second incident a month later, they replaced the clutch master cylinder.the clutch recently started to feel "sticky" again, and failed on june 30 while in a traffic jam.after letting it cool for about an hour, the car was driveable again.the clutch fluid was replaced, but the problem returned about 30 minutes after i left the dealer.i returned to the dealer, where they informed me that the latest theory from subaru of america is that there is a pocket in the casting of the master cylinder that traps air which can't be released by pressure bleeding the system and it must be "gravity bled".they did this and the problem has gone away (at least for now).no reason was given for the return of the failure after a year.

On march 19, 2013, i was returning to my place of employment after picking up my outback from bloomington acura subaru, bloomington, mn after a clutch replacement when the hydraulic brake system had a total failure resulting in a near catastrophic collision with several vehicles.this vehicle was taken back to the dealer for evaluation. Dealer inspection confirmed that the right rear brake line by the fuel tank protector had excessive corrosion resulting in severe fluid release thus not allowing the hydraulic system to properly pressurize resulting in a complete failure of the brake hydraulic system.the brake lines replaced were part number 26522aa010 and 26522aa020 (right and left).on march 27, 2013, the nhtsa issued campaign number 13v110000 for subaru legacy outbacks regarding "brake lines may fail due to corrosion".this recall pertains to model year 2005 to 2009.this citizen requests, nay, insists that this recall notice be extended to include later model years.

While driving in the city streets, i came to a stop and realized the car would not stop. When i took my vehicle to the mechanic he said 3 brake lines on my subaru outback 1998 had broken. I live in pennsylvania. This incident cost me $500 in repairs. I realize there is a recall for newer models, but my older subaru outback is having the same issue.

While driving the vehicle at any speed and applied the brakes, the vehicle can experience extended stopping distance, vehicle suffered sudden acceleration. Dealer has inspected the vehicle and could not duplicate or correct the problem. Please provide further information.

I was approaching a stop sign in second gear and preparing to stop when the abs apparently took control of my car.i was unable to stop before the intersection and nearly hit another car.i did not feel that the road conditions warrented the abs response (the road was slightly wet) and i did feel that i was in control of my car before the abs took over.i was traveling under 10 miles per hour.i have driven my car in considerably worse weather and was always able to anticipate my stopping distance.the abs light has never come on and when i took my car to the dealer, they could find nothing wrong.info that may be relevent...i was recently involved in a minor car accident but i do not think it should've affected the brakes.i also had my car realigned today and i do not know if this could have any affect on the abs.

Car attempts to accelerate when applying brakes to come to a stop. Engine roars and it is difficult to stop car. Problem happens intermittently and usually when the car is going 5 miles per hour or less. Brake pedal goes all the way down when attempting to stop car. The same problem is happening with our 2001 suburu outback (see odi#764455).

When applying the brakes the vehicle does not stop. The emergency brake has to be applied in order to stop. Dealer can't find the problem.

Consumer was traveling about 60mph onhighway, vehicle in front slowed down, consumer appliedbrakes, and vehicle took off on its on. Abs braking system was activated, and the pedal went to the floor, causingextended stopping distance which almost resulted in an accident.then, while driving the brakes did not work at all for some seconds.dealer is alsoreplacing the master cylinder, and statedthat it was a known problem.please provide further information.

When applying brakes the pedal goes to the floor, andvehicle takes an excessive amount of time to stop. Owner has veered into intersections several times. Dealer can't find solution because problem can't be duplicated.

Sounded like there was a pop in my front corner.still drove ok under 20-25 mph.faster than that the wheel shook violently.backing up there was a loud grinding noise.took to friends hose who works on cars.he said it was my front lower control arm on the driver's side.the connection between the control arm and the front (he called it handling bushing) was rusted completely in two.he found a used control arm at a junk yard and replaced it for me.we took pictures of the part that i can provide if needed.i no longer have the old part.

We purchased a brand new subaru outback s/w in 1999 and recently had a flat tire.upon placing the "mini" spare provided with the car and driving (under 50 mph) only 19 miles to a tire dealer to have the flat repaired, the rear end was damaged.it cost $800 to have the rear end gears replaced.it turns out that the "mini" spare provided with the car cannot be used without disabling the all wheel drive, by finding and replacing a fuse under the hood (listed in the instructions for spare removal last on page 2 of the owners manual). Oh yeah, the spare can only be used on the rear wheels.this information is all "hidden" in the owners manual.since we have auto insurance that includes towing, we would have been much better off towing the car to the tire dealer to have the flat repaired (for free) than using the spare provided and paying $800 to have the rear end rebuilt. (towing needs to be done on a flat bed truck with all whells off the ground.)please warn other drivers of this improperly labled "spare tire". Any assistance you can provide from subaru will be greatly appreciated.

Dt: the contact states one of the tires has been losing air.the service mechanic states that he has never seen this problem. The wheel itself looks like it has a cracked.it is right in the middle of the wheel on the inner rim. It has not damaged the tires. The tire is located on the passenger'sside front. The metal alloy wheel is what has the crack. The tires on the wheel were almost new and there was no problem with them.

When using the factory provided spare tire, the rear differential caught on fire.owner did not drive vehicle over 50 miles as stated in owner's manual. Owner was able to put out fire.the repairs weremade by the dealer under warranty. Fire was due to the diffenrence in the tire size.

While driving 45 mph rear passenger side tire tread separated.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Driver veered off of the road and flipped over.

The car accelerated when backing from a parking space, hit a pole, i then put it on drive and it accelerated at a very high speed, i went to brake, it had already hit a parked dodge caravan in the parking spot directly in front of me. I was on brake, car still continued to move. I managed to put it on neutral and it stopped. I turned off the engine. My car had pushed the parked dodge 1.5 car lengths. Van tire skid marks measured by highway patrol. No injuries except to myself, hit my knee and my head. Indicent reported to ca hwy patrol, geico insurance company, and 49r subaru dealership. Currently car is at the dearlership being evaluated for a mechanical malfunction.i had taken it to the dealership at 60k miles for possible transmisision problem, it seemed to downshift at lowspeeds inappropiately. No problem found. I took it in 90k because of burning oil smell and engine light went on. Oilwas leaking from several seals, all had to be replaced, including the timing belt. I discovered the timing belt and oil seals were replaced by previous owner prior to 50k miles. I've had the tires balanced and aligned twice because of severe tire wear and shaking at speeds above 50 mph. Car currently has 101k miles.

There have been three episodes in which the engine suddenly and dramatically revved and car surged, once while stopped at a stop light, twice when taking foot off accelerator approaching a curve.i had to turn car off, and in several instances, when it was restarted the rpm went up to over 7000.

When the brakes are applied vehicle would lurch forward. The rpms would be revving. Would put vehicle in neutral. Only used vehicle in ny.

Driving along between 40 and 50 mph the car suddenly accelerated. I applied the brakes which slowed the car down but the engine continued to race mild panic set in. I attempted to put the car into neutral and instead accidently put the car into reverse. This did stop the car, but as you would expect. I have incurred an unknown amount of damage to the transmission. Although i don't expect any sympathy because of my awkward handeling of the shifter. I would like to know what if anything subaru intends to about this very dangerous unexpected acceleration problem. Your complaint site has similar such complaints on record. Mine will be the ninth. When you consider that many people have probably experienced. The same problem but have not bothered to formally complain, it would seem that a real problem does exist. Thank you.dt

When driving at low speeds, the vehicle surged forward.this caused the consumer to lose control of the vehicle and hit a light pole head on.upon impact, both frontal air bags did not deploy.the consumer had the vehicle towed to the insurance company's designated repair facility.this was quickly followed by 2-3 more accelerations in which the vehicle gained speed each time.the vehicle felt as if it were being shifted into the next gear. *sc

Failure and its consequences:i own a 1993 subaru impreza l, and i own a 1998 impreza outback sport.both these cars have a potentially serious safety issue.there are two tsb's on hesitation issues for all subaru's concerning this.this is a hazard because of the sudden need for acceleraion in the case of an emergency.my personal experiences are:1.ambulance coming to intersection behind me with no room for me to pull over due to parked cars, and i attempted to moveout of his way pushing down on the throttle, and the car completely sputtering and barely moving.the ambulance is stuck behind me while i am attempting tomove out of it's way.2.the light turns green at an intersection, but someone fails to stop to their red light, and nearly get t-boned, thanks to cadillac's strong braking power, because my car sputters, and moves like a turtle when i need to safely move out of the way for safety. I have a family, and this needs to be addresses with a professional manner.with the engineering going into cars these days, and all off these high-paid engineers, and all professional positions, this is not an acceptable problem to be put aside.if there is anything that can be done, please do so.and in the future if it is done, my personal regards and thanks to all the initiative, and courage for those that stood to fix this problem.max .
