The contact owns a 1998 subaru legacy.while driving 45 mph, the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a guardrail.none of the air bags deployed.during the crash, the contact was forced through the windshield.the insurance company stated that they had no findings regarding the crash.there were no warning lights present.the vehicle was destroyed.a police report was filed.the current and failure mileages were 39,000.
At time of a regular service, told that the air bag switch has failed, even though this vehicle has never been in an accident of any kind.told that the air bags would not deploy in the event of an accident and told i need to purchase a new switch for $552 + tax and installation.there are 10 other events on your site showing the failure of the air bags to deploy, many resulting in injuries.i believ a recall is warranted here.
During a front end collision driver and passenger side air bags failed to deploy. Yh
While driving at approximately 75 mph driver swerved to the left to avoid hitting a vehicle when dual airbags deployed suddenly without any impact done to vehicle. Due to deployment of airbags ,driver lost control of vehicle, resulting in anaccident.
When driving at 45 mph vehicle veered to the right and lifted up, and allpower went to the front side. Consumer appliedabs brakes, and vehicle wouldn't stop, causing vehicle to skid andrun into a house.upon impact, driver's side and passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.
Cpsc#i1220374a. 1998 legacy subaru. Consumer stated the air bags failed to deploy in a frontal collision.*ln
Vehicle was in an accident traveling at 70mph.it was a frontaland side collision, andair bags did not deploy. Dealer has not been contacted.
I was involved in a front-end collision at approximately 35 mph.i received word today that the car is considered totaled by the insurance company. Neither the dirver's side nor passenger's side airbag employed in the accident.
No deployment of driver's/passenger's air bags in a crash, resulting in injuries to driver.
Vehicle involved in a frontal collision with a fire hydrant.there was substantial damage to the vehicle and the hydrant did break away as designed.air bag did not deploy.
This is an airbag cutoff switch complaint. I couldn't find any other place on your website to lodge it. We got our cutoff swtich authorization almost a year ago. The subaru switch was to be ready 12/98. Now there's no date even given. This is unfair. You force them to make the bag and us to buy it, can't you force them to make the cutoff switch? they advise we not use a generic. I sometimes have to cram 4 kids in my backseat sharing belts. Is that safe?
Sunroof drainlines were repaired twice, due to leakage, dealer believes that the windshield installer caused them to be disconnected.cv joint leaking due to freeze plug in the cv joints, replace but leaks worse.installed a battery hold down, top defroster line repaired twice, smell of burning oil.
The battery failed.
Alternator failed , causing loss of power in heavy freeway traffic, collision luckily avoided.
At the beginning of february, 2003, blown engine in a 1998 subaru legacy 2.5 gt.dealer stated that the problem was due to cold weather in the northeast, and that there were 4 other subaru's with blown engines in his lot awaiting repair.i had the engine replaced with a 1999 subaru at a trusted mechanic's (at a cost of $4000), and today the alternator on this 1999 engine died ( this had been a recall on the '98 subaru's).
Alternator died will travelling on highway at night, total loss of electrical power

I was towed 15 miles to the dealership, at a cost of $140 dollars, and paid 294.35 dollars to have it replaced. At the time i was informed that there was an open recall on both 1996 and 1997 altenators but nothing on the 1998's. Last week i got a letter from subaru informing me that some 1998's may require altenator replacements.
The alternator failed.
2nd subaru to fail, both under 3 yrs old, under 42k mile. No safety defect listed in summary.
Key didn't come out of ignition switch.shift lock control module had to be replaced.
Consumer request for reimbursement for all repairs expenses for 1998 subaru legacy.*mrduring regular maintenance the dealer determined that he vehicle's steering center differential needed to be replaced.the vehicle's check engine light illuminated.the dealer replaced the ignition coil.since the vehicle only has 38,000 miles the consumer feels subaru should reimburse him for the cost of the repairs.
Consumer noticed that the temperature gauge was registering hot on the dashboard while driving.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer.mechanic determined that the head gasket blew out and needed replacement.......it was necessary to tear down the engine and replace all the gaskets/hoses/radiator/water pump/thermostat, as well as the coolant and oil. From january 2004 to september 2004, subaru replaced 13 head gaskets on outbacks, and vintages from 1996-1998, and a mileage from 60,000 miles-90,000 miles. This represented a seriousmanufacting defect, it should be addressed by the manufacturer with a recall notice.
1 x overheated on a hot day, heading up a hill. Noticed high temp and turned on heater, waited for car to cool, added h2o. 2 months later, driving on a hot day with ac on, sudden clicking, check engine light, lost power, smoke, stopped. Towed to garage that specializes in subaru and they found hole in head gasket. Repairs to cost $3k and this is something they see 2x a week with subaru vehicles. Found a web site where dozens of people complain of the same issue over the years. Subaru apparently has a recall on 1999-2002 vehicles, but not others with the same issue. Subaru should be paying for the parts on this widespread and known issue!
It seems after 5 minutes of investigation that there is thousands of 1997 to 2002 subaru owners who are have the problem with over heating and head gasket replacement. Subaru refuses to acknowledge an issue or design flaw and is making the customer bare the cost of repairing a faulty head gasket problem. Even replacing the head gasket does not insure that the problem will be dealt withand no further trouble will be had.
Vehicle was leaking ant freeze, which was splashing all over the engine compartment.this resulted in the temperature gauge reading hot. This occurred because the head gasketblew out, and was replaced.
Hot burning smell in the cabin and outside of car, several trips to the shop.
Car overheated, took to dealership.called next day and informedthe head gasket was blown.after discussing, they said they had to replace both head gaskets.knowing about cars, this seemed strange to me that both were blown at same time - it was at this time that dealership pointed out to me that subaru is having problems with head gaskets and that this is not an ususual problem. Replacement cost was $2200.
Grease seals on drive shaft failed.yh
Dealer wrote: "noise from valve train...advised owner these are solid lifters and are noisy when cold, also characteristic of this engine is 'cam walk' which also will be noisy for a few minutes when cold then goes away." that wa at 48.5 k miles, now at 53000 miles, noise is much louder when cold, and still perceptable when warm. Bought car used form dealer--resale value is now much lower due to noise. Their explanation is nonsensical. Obviously dubaru does not want to deal with this issue--i wrote to subaru usa and they refered me back to dealer.
I am getting a loud slapping noise from the engine on cold starts it last for about ten to fifteen minutes or untill the engine warmes up,the dealer says that it is a piston slap and that is normal. I do not agree, when i first bought the car it did not have that noise ,and it is getting louder ,i do not want to wait to have this problem fixed ,my warrantee will expire soon
Coolant leaked fromthe engine head gasket. The consumer took the vehicle to dealer, and they replaced the gasket head/gas, and holes.
Asked dealership to look at knocking noise in engine 2 years ago, no problem identified.asked another automobile repair facility about the noise and they claim subaru had a history of piston slap that will eventually get worse resulting in burning oil and engine damage.
Engine noise when cold.sounds like a lifter is sticking.it disapates when the engine warms up, however, can last up to 15 minutes or longer depending oh how cold the engine was when started.when i drove this vehicle to the dealer for its 30000 service, i thought a rod was going to shoot through the engine wall..it was that noisy.it lasted at least 10 miles of driving until the noise disapated.this auto was purchased by my mother in law (now deceased), is in her estateand has two months before warranty expires.the dealer will not repair due to alleged subaru bulletin. Subaru of america says it is normal, will not cause a problem over the life of the engine, however claims they have not produced nor will produce a subaru bulletin on this issue.this is not a normal operating noise and it will no doubt damage the engine over time.i would not buy this car with this sound and would not expect anyone including any subaru dealer or subaru of america to purchase with this engine noise, let alone try to sell one in this condition.in my mind it is a manufacturing defect and a responsibility of subaru to fix.this is a problem subaru needs to step up and take the responsibility for an inferior engine design.or post a warning on every car warning potential buyers that their car may develop an engine noise due to engine design, that will effect their ability to sell the car at a later date.
Head gasket failure.
Loud engine knocking at start-up/subaru has "internal" service bulletin to replace pistons?
While driving 75 mph vehicle stalled. Consumer was not able to restartthe vehicle, andit was towedto the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the engineneeded to be replaced.
Oil leak from oil filter seam, causing fire.(qcaw)
Oil leaking from oil pump.the leaking oil comes in contact with the header and burns.
While driving 60 mph vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle. Itwas towed to a garage for inspection, andmechanic determined that the head gasket needed to be replaced due to a blow out.updated 02/24/06
Vehicle requires replacement of head gaskets, as part of the engine coolant system. Original service complaint was the " check engine light came on". After three days at dealer service, it was determined that the head gaskets needed replacement for the cost of $ 2,700.00. Because the engine has to be removed to access the gaskets. Labor will involve 3 days.the dealer has admitted that this is a design problem with the subaru and models from 1999 will be covered. I feel the cost is excessive because of a design defect. I am will to pay but not $ 2,700.00. I was expecting $ 400-$500 dollars. For a $ 20.00 dollar seal! while not a safety defect; it certainly is a design defect!
My 98 subaru legacy outback 2.5 liter, 144k miles was sporadically overheating while driving on the highway through a snow/rain storm.the temperature gauge would go up, and the cabin heater would start producing cool air.i pulled over and let it cool down, filled the radiator back up with water (it had overflowed) and drove slowly home.when i took it to the mechanic, he suggested when hearing the symptoms that it was a blown head gasket, and that this subaru engine was notorious for this.he even suggested a class action suit.after he checked it out, it was indeed a blown head gasket.after some web research on car forums, i found several other people with exactly the same problem with this particular engine.

The obd system indicates check engine.the engine looses power and the cars acceleration becomes very weak.the car is turned off and restarted and the engine will either continue to malfunction or will run normally. The dealer replaced the idle speed control ($600) but the problem continues to occur.now subaru says that they cannot find any malfunction.when the engine malfunctions without warning it is dangerous to drive the car when accelerating onto a highway or in heavy traffic. I cannot trust this car to get me safely to my destination.
Engine was died.
While driving a tapping noise is coming fromengine. Contacted dealer, anddealer cannot findcause of problem.
Engine piston noise continual, consumer has taken vehicle in to dealership on several occassions, dealership and manfacturer state that the engine noise is due to the new efficient design of the engine.
The car developed a leak at the oil filter (lee maxi filter) where it meets the engine.the leak started small and grew steadily larger (10 extra quarts of oil were needed to go the last 50 miles).this occurred toward the end of my trip, after traveling about 140 miles.i know that there had been a recall previously on the subaru brand filter (1998) for this very same problem at the end of last year, but i had this problem with a lee brand filter, which i had but on 2100 miles earlier.up until this time, no loss of oil had occurred with this filter or with previous oil changes (i had just checked the oil level a few days earlier).i believe that there may be a larger problem here, other than the subaru brand filter from the recall.you should also know that there is an auto question and answer area in the friday july 23 issue of the newspaper "newsday" (long island, nywww.newsday.com).the very first question is from an owner of a 1998 subaru legacy who had an oil leak attributed to the filter, and had to have his car towed to the dealer.he mentioned that the dealer required him to pay for the towing and repair, as the oil filter that failed was not a subaru oil filter.since this is another incident involving a non subaru filter failure.this may indicate that other brand filters are experiencing the same problem, and that there may be a problem with the car itself, and not the filter.the car is currently parked, waiting for me to get off of work to put on a new filter (fram brand).i did notice that the rubber gasket on the fram filter is much taller than the lee brand filter gasket.i don't know if this has any relationship to the problem.can you advise me if you have received any additional complaints of this type from people who either experienced this problem with a subaru filter not covered by the recall or with a lee maxi filter or other non subaru filter.thank you for your help.(i will provide you with vin number in the near future)

A tire went flat, so consumer put on spare, this resulted in damage to the rear differential and transfer case, these parts overheated and had to be quickly hosed down with water to prevent a fire, in the owners manual it states that the all wheel drive system needs to be disengaged if a spare tire is ever used, however consumer did not notice these special instructions and feels this damage would not have occurred if a warning sticker would have been on the spare tire, consumer is requesting reimbursement.

Fuel (gasoline) filler neck for the 1998 subaru legacy wagon rusts out because the tube is behind a plastic molding that accumulates dirt, salt, water, and rots the tubing causing a chronic leak of gasoline potentially over the exhaust system.recall and repair is needed.
Fuel (gasoline) filler neck for the 1998 subaru legacy sw rusts out because the tube is behind a plastic molding that accumulates dirt, salt, water, and rots the tubing causing a chronic leak of gasoline potentially over the exhaust system.recall and repair is needed.
While warming the vehicle up there is a strong fuel smell coming from the dashboard compartment, and wheneverstopping in traffic the smell is very strong.the smell is like gasoline, contacted the dealer and they don't know what the source of the promblem is.
Poorly designed gas filler neck/pipe has corroded and is leaking gasoline. This is a major safety and environmental hazard with potentially grave consequences.
Gas lines to gas tankare located underand front rear driver's side door asstepping into vehicle. Consumer puncturedthemvery easily when just trying to hook up some lights.within minutes, there was about 2 gallons of gas inbackseat.consumer felt this was very unsafe.the pouring of gas into the interior of the vehicle whengas line breaks is unsafe design.
Dt: the contact stateswhenfilling up the vehicle the fuel filler pipe leaks out half a tank of gas. Also, while drivingit will leak gas. He contacted a local dealership, and they said there was no recall on this vehicle at this time.
The fuel filler neck on this vehicle was completely rotted (rusted pipe, plus associated hoses were rotted) and required replacement.
In 2004 my hood latch failed emergency latch and hood flew up and crashed my windshield.subaru said they fixed latch but yesterday 3/3/09 for a second time my hood came up smashing my windshield violently i am injured again and traumatized and subaru northtown collision never told me of this problemand i was almost killed.this is so very dangerous and needs to be brought to people's attention.
1998 subaru legacy hood latch failed in high winds.
While driving 50 mphhood flew open, windshield was broken. Consumer was able to pull over safely, no injuries.
The contact owns a 1998 subaru legacy. While attempting to drive, the transmission began to smoke and then unexpectedly failed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 155,025. Updated 05/31/17*lj*as
The speedometer on my 1999 subaru legacy l sedan stops working at random intervals. My mechanic tells me that this is connected to the also faulty transmission and is not just a minor speed sensor problem. Subaru denies any knowledge of these problems but i have researched and found many, many 1999 subaru owners with the exact same problems. The 1999's had a new transmission that is very flawed and was changed again before the 2000 release because of so many problems. This is the second 1999 subaru legacy i have bought in the past 3 months with this very same problem (i assumed the first was a fluke and the dealer took the car back). The car has 96,000 miles and should not need a complete transmission overhaul at this point. I believe that subaru is very aware of these faults but doesn't want to face the repercussions of a campaign or recall. I implore you to look into this. These faulty transmissions and their associated failures(speedometer, etc) are a danger to all owners. It is irresponsible of subaru to release an entire model year that has so many expensive problems to fix.
Intermittent failures: car does not shift into second gear and keeps accelerating with rpm increasing.have to take foot off accelerator and pulse to get car to shift into second gear.
Transmission was defective. When driving on the highway andafter the vehicle was running for a while lower gears intransmission will not go into gear. When vehicle cooled off for a period of time the vehicle ran well.consumer took the vehicle to the dealership, and was told that after the vehicle was test driventhere was no problem. However, after consumer drove the vehicle again , while the vehicle was hot, the same problem occurred. Already, transmission was replaced 3 times, but problem recurred.
Defect within vehicle is causing the front of vehicle to shake, including steering wheel when vehicle is being driven at least 58-68 mph.also pulls to right. Dealer also changed transmission bracket and angle of driveshaft, and put in new wheels and rims. Vehicle is still shaking.
Upon starting vehicle inadvertently jumped out of gear into reverse. Dealer andmanufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
Dealership service technician indicated the rear axle was coming loose from the rear differential, recommended replacement.dealership replaced rear axle seals.dealership indicated problem was caused by vehicle being suspended by differential and resulting downward strain on axles.this has not occured while we have owned this car (approx. 3 years).the front axle seals were replaced in a recall on 7/18/03.

Bought my subaru legacy 2.5 gt last month, i brought the car in for the first servicing complaining of clutch, and transmission difficulty.when car goes over bumps, transmission twists and lurches. 5 speed manual transmission, third gear is difficult to enter, reverse grinds.
Consumer states after parking vehicle, it jump out ofgear and started moving. Nlm
Car out of alignment, car pulls to the right even when in alignment.ride is very rough like something is out of kilter; the transmission doesn't operate smoothly between 2nd and 3rd gear... Like hesitation, and acts like there could be something wrong with the gas lines or parts controlling the fuel to car; cup holder is designed so that everything wants to tip out!!it is not deep enough which could be a definite safety hazzard if something hot tips out onto passenger.i previously owned a 1993 subaru legacy wagon that also pulled to the right!! and the transmission (standard) was sooooo poorly geared in 1st and snd that it ate tires continually, would not move on snowy or inclined surfaces, and posed a major safety hazzard in wet or snowy conditions,,, this was a standard, non-awd model... And the transmission went out on this vehicle at 93,000 miles and subaru woudl not take responsibility for any of these problems!!!that vehicle was clearly defective as this one is,,, and none of the corrections they (the dealership) has made have corrected or held so far!as for the gearing .. They say it is the nature of the beast!! as is the pulling,,, i think i have another subaru lemon,,, and i do not want to have the same problems or worse that i had before!!!
Transfer case vibrates at higher speeds.
Rear anchor seat belts are too long to safely secure a number of child car seats.
Inquiring how a government initiated recall the year of a car or replacement parts works, injured in a 1998 legacy wagon. The consumer tried to recover the original head rest from the vehicle, but was told it was no longer available and it would be replaced with a much safer model.the consumer learned that the manufacturer unofficially replaced the seats and head rests of her make and model beginning with the 1999.

The contact owns a 1998 subaru legacy. While the brake pedal was depressed, the contact stated that the brake pedal felt spongy. The contact heard a rattling noise but could not determine the origin. June 26 2017 i went to have my front brake pads replaced, because they felt spongy and difficult to stop the vehicle. The mechanic told me i needed to replace the brake pads, rotors, and outer tie rods on both ends. All these parts were dangerously worn preexisting conditions before i purchased the vehicle in december 2016.the brake repair was done at:424 west henderson street, cleburne, texas 76033. 817 645 7848. Onjune 26, 2017i purchased the vehicle from brad deery honda in iowa used, as is. Since then i have had to have numerous expensive repairs. There should be laws to protect consumers from dealerships that sell vehicles that are unsafe and falling apart, and refusing to help pay repair bills. Used vehicles do not qualify for help under the lemon laws. Please let me know if there is something i can do to get help with my repair bills on my vehicle for unsafe preexisting mechanical conditions.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Occurs in winter. Consumer experienced two near collisions because brakes did not engage and stop vehicle. Both situations were at 25 mph.
Brake failed four times.
.when applying the brakespedal went to the floor and the vehicle did not stop. The owner rear ended another vehicle. Dealer has vehicle now. Consumer also noticed there is a recall listed for the same type of problem, recall 99v04000.
While driving, consumer felt a vibration in the steering wheel, after inspection, consumer found a large amount of brake dust on the right front wheel, one of the caliper pistons was frozen, the brake pad was worn down on one side, however 80 percent was left on the other side.

This internet system is not the best form for this: the manufatcurer has replaced the sun visors once, but it doesn't help. The visor design is poor. They swing with great freedom & speed any time you round a curve or turn quickly, smackiong the driver in the head at the right height to knock off glasses or knock the brim of your hat across your eyes when you maneuver briskly. This is very distracting & can dangerously interfere with visability & control of the vehicle, causing accidents. We haven't had one yet.. The company simply replaced the original visor with an identical one, which soon had the same problem.the design is very poor (one of several very poorly designed items on this car). The shafts on which they pivot so rapidly & freely are hollow, to make space for the power cord for the **lighted mirrors(!!)** this is why it can't be tightened or adjusted & a new one is no better. The design needs to be changed, & these dip-brains who wasted my money on junk like lighted (double lighted) could spend the money on something useful, like outside rearview mirrors! thanx, bk. P.s. I may try to find a workable older one from a junk yard, if i get the time.
The rollers for the power windowsare collecting dirt and leaving a vertical scratchalong the length of the window.when i contacted the service department in my area i was told this would not be covered under my warranty because the district service manager for subaru had determined the damage was caused from dirt on the windows.this seems odd to me because the subaru legacy is the only vehicle i have seen this problem on and other cars in my area are not suffering from this problem.i have had no luck with subaru or my dealer in solving this problem.i was told i could pay $50 to have my door assembly taken apart to clean the rollers and pay $200-$300 per window to replace the window.if this problem existed on other makes or models i could accept the explaination that i need to keep the dirt off of my car, but that is not the case.i feel subaru should replace the rollers and window under my warranty.

The contact owns a 1998 subaru legacy wagon. The driver-side cross member that connects the wheel assembly to the main frame had corroded. The steering wheel also makes a clanging noise when turning and sometimes does not respond. The manufacturer was notified, and he was advised thatthe warranty expired and there were no recalls on his vehicle. The vehicle was not drivable and it requires a tow truck to be taken to the dealer for repairs.all repairs will be at the owners expense.the failure mileage was 254,000.
The weld that attached the front right strut assembly to the body completely failed.the wheel collapsed into the wheel well.this happened while i beginning to make a right turn.the vehicle was not moving more than 3-4 mph.for some months before the weld failed there was vibration during braking that we could not diagnose. I ended up replacing the brake pads, rotors, brake cylinders on both front wheels to no avail. I have pictures of the collapsed wheel. I don't know how to upload the picture.i can send it to an email address if you wish.
While driving at approximately 75 mph driver swerved to the left to avoid hitting a vehicle when dual airbags deployed suddenly without any impact done to vehicle. Due to deployment of airbags ,driver lost control of vehicle, resulting in anaccident.

Tires repeatedly lose air, especially in rear. Steel belt began showing and a large sidewall bulge appeared in one rear tire at about 15,500 miles. Cruise control was engaged as i was driving on the highway.when i applied the brakes approaching the exit ramp the cruise control did not seem to disengage.while my foot was on the brake pedal, i hit the cruise control switch on the dashboard--the cruise control light went off, however the car did not slow down although i was applying the brakes as hard as possible. I lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree head on at an estimated speed of 40-50mph.neither driver nor passenger airbag deployed.the vehicle was a total loss.i contacted subaru of america, inc. After the accident and sent them all information requested on 11/24/98; i have had no response from subaru to date.
On two consecutive days, 4/15 and 4/16, while stopping from a <5 mph speed, the car surged ahead 2-4 feet, stopped, and immediately surged ahead 2-4 feet again, and stopped.the first time it almost put me out in heavy traffic on a 4 laned highway.the second time i was pulling into my daughter's driveway and was stopping when it surged ahead taking out the post supporting their front porch, stopped, then immediately surged ahead taking out the lattice work under their porch.both times the car was on an uphill incline. Damage to the vehicle included the right front fog light, popped out and put a "wrinkle" in the right front bumped and scratched the hood.the mileage is approximate because the car is still at the dealers.when i called to check on it 4/19 they had not been able to replicate it and stated they had one more test to run and then i could pick it up.that is totally unacceptable!
The contact owns a 1996 subaru legacy. While pulling into a parking space with her foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and she was unable to stop the vehicle which caused it to crash into a building. Two passengers were injured.the insurance company stated that the vehicle was destroyed. The mileage was not available.
Vehicle experiencing sudden acceleration.
While accelerating away from a stop, at low engine rpm and low throttle opening, the car hesitates.if you give it more throttle, it gives a sudden but unpredictable burst of acceleration.it is very difficult to get out of the way if someone happens to be headed toward you.it is also impossible to know when the car will start to accerlerate normally. It is a jerky type of action that does not coincide with the smooth application of the accelerator pedal.
Vehicle was in park andtook off without prior warning. Dealership was aware ofproblem.
Whenever the accelerator pedal is depressed, the vehicle would hesitate before catching or moving. Took to dealer & problem was confirmed. Mechanic did not know how to repair the problem.
