Steering wheel airbag cover has split; a subaru 3yr/36k warranty item; if car were in crash, wouldn't the airbag possibly cause injury by inflating out of the torn airbag cover on the steering wheel?cannot replace just the cover; will cost $1000+/- to replace the airbag and cover.shouldn't the original driver airbag assembly be a seatbelt-like warranty item? the plastic cover splits, the airbag could injure in a way not expected, and the manufacturer does not have to provide a warranty for its defective product.

My 1998 subaru forester hesitates on acceleration in the low rpm range.once over about 3000 rpm, it runs fine.according to a technical service bulletin released by subaru in jan 1999, #11-53-98, this is caused by the engine control module incorrectly interpreting vibrations in the engine as skipping and readjusting the fuel flow rate.the fix requires installing an upgraded ecm--to the tune of well over $1000.this hesitation produces an unsafe situation because the car may at any time refuse to accelerate, or accelerate suddenly without warning.

Whenvehicle was turned on it suddenly accelerated backwards very fast, crashing into two vehicles. Consumer has contacteddealer.cause of the problem has yet to be determined. While vehicle was in park and consumer had foot on the brake and turned on ignition the vehicle accelerated very fast in reverse and caused accident, consumer is also having various electrical problems with the vehicle, such as the battery draining, security system goes off while parked, and the doors lock by themselves. *yd

Vehicle caught fire while driving. Fire started from rear of vehicle's back seat.cause of fire has not been determined.owner is very concerned for safety.

Car began smoking under the hood-no indication from dashboard that perhaps the car was overheating.when the car was ultimately turned off at the home of the owner, the engine under the hood ignited, flames engulfed under the hood.fire department andpolice department were called to extinguish fire which was ten feet from garage of home.damage to driveway as well, due to melting of rubber and plastic in the car.fire reported to insurance company.car was not driveable as per fire chief-car was towed to auto body shop.

Security system goes off when hazard lights are engaged/abs brakes squeak. In addition, while pulling out of parking spot, vehicle lunged forward unexpectedly, and engine check light comes on.

The contact owns a 1998 subaru forester. The contact stated that the service engine indicator illuminated and the engine revved up and down. The vehicle would need to accelerate in order to rev down. An independent mechanic stated that the failure may be due to the oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter. The contact called liberty auto city (1000 e park ave, libertyville, il 60048, (847) 362-2683) and was informed that there were no recalls. The manufacturer provided the contact with a case number. The failure mileage was 120,000.

1998 subaru forester. Consumer states that while driving she heard a loud noise, pulled over to inspect the vehicle it was on fire. *mc the consumer replaced the knock sensor 30 days prior. (ohio traffic crash report).

Snow and ice build up in modest snow caused the engine cooling system to fail. It was the opinon of the mechanic who repaired the car that the front grill of the was of poor design that caused the ice and snow to build. There was only 4-6 inches of snow the day before. A modest amount to cause such asever problem. The design of the front grill trapped the snow. This does not happen to other cars in this snow condition. Opini

Vehicle leaking oil at front seals and getting onto the exhaust system.

(1) noticed periodic overheating on 1998 forester with 2.5l dohc engine.(2) head gasket failed temperature spiked and coolant boiled over, large amount of white steam from hood.(3) dealer said problem was head gasket and the engine was repaired for $1800, subaru of america was notified and denied any problems with this year engine in spite of a large number of similiar head gasket.

1. Engine failure due to a manufacturer's defect -- the cylinder walls are being bored into to place the engine bolts on the subaru 2.5l engines.in this case the cylinder wall cracked through the entire section where it was substantially bored into on the number 1 cylinder causing the engine to fail completely. Each of the 4 cylinder walls on my vehicle were bored into to some degree.i have a 1998 subaru forester l. With 72,000 miles.there was never an indication of a problem prior to engine failure.at the time of failure a blown head gasket was thought to be the problem.more information and pictures can be found at:http://webdev.ce.utexas.edu/irwin2. This consequences of the defect rendered the vehicle useless and worthless.and there was absolutely nothing i could have done to prevent the failure from occurring.i followed the recommended maintanence schedule given to me by subaru at the time of purchase and have not received any ammendments to that schedule since i purchased the vehicle.we were lucky the engine failure did not happen when my family and i were on the highway or in a remote location.3. Nothing has been done to correct the problem to date.i have a case number (643095)pending with subaru as of 6/25/04, but was told the vehicle will not be reviewed for another 10 days on 6/28/04.the engine failed on 6/16/04.

Engine head gaskets failed.heads were saved, but engine had to have top-half rebuilt.

The clutch does not engage properly when the engine is cold and for extended periods in cold weather.clutch "chatters"making it difficult to start up from rest without hesitation and/or stalling.potentially dangerous in traffic. Clutch seems not strong enough to handle the torque of the engine.

Vehicle dripping oil/grease onto the catalytic coverter, causing a burning smell. Dealer notified.

Evaporator core sprung a leak, resulting inair conditioning failing.

Driving 40 mph another driver pointed out problem. Pulled over & noticed smoke from under the hood. Flames started shooting out. Fire department called & put out flames. Fire chief said fire orignated from fuel lines. Flames had engulfed vehicle in minutes. Vehicle totaled.

Bad seal on o ring of oil dip stick caused oil to overfill transmission fluid, car would stall due to lack of oil pressure. Dealer fixed after third visit.

1. Wheel bearings have consistently needed replacement starting 4 years after car purchased new. At 450.00 to 500.00 each time. This is a design issues and subaru needs to pay of each replacement. 2. Fuel line leak. This is very dangerous and again listed many many time on all subaru fix web sites. Cost to fix 1600.00 and more if fuel tank needs replacing. Again, subaru needs to deal with this. These have been happening since car purchased. Car has been well maintained since purchase.

When at the gas stations i try to put gas into my car, it isnot going into the tank properly, it keeps shutting the gas nozzle off within seconds. Very hard to put gas into my car.

Yesterday aft. My car drove itself into a store window with me at the wheel. Fortunately no one was hurt but it could have been a real disaster. I was already parked there, put the car in reverse and it took off without my touching the accelerator. In fact, my foot was on the brake the whole time (automatic transmission). My braking wouldn't stop it, so i managed to get it into a forward gear. Had i not, the car might well have driven further into the store and hurt the several shoppers. Once in a forward gear, the car thenit took off forward on a wild ride; again, i was merely the passenger. I managed to steer the car for a short distance before it decelerated, my foot on the brake all this time, while i cleared a light post and two cars on either side, as well as traffic in the road.

Clutch chatters badly and clutch does not engage until the pedal is almost fully depressed when vehicle sits overnight.problem seems more pronounced in colder weather, but occurs in all weather conditions.in addition to causing an unsafe driving situation, the condition may cause first and reverse gears to grind when selecting these gears from a stop.after driving a few miles the problem goes away and the clutch operates normally.the problem has been reported to subaru repair shops numerous times, including at 33,220; 59,451; 74,213; and 92,380 miles.the subaru repair shops can usually duplicate the chatter, but they have never been able to duplicate the clutch engaging only after being almost completely depressed.at 92,380 miles the vehicle was driven only 1.5 miles in the morning to the subaru repair shop with the poor clutch engagement still occurring, and the subaru repair shop said they still could not duplicate the problem.the entire clutch assembly was removed and repaired shortly after the 33,220 mile service complaint at subarus expense, but the problem returned within a few thousand miles.this appears to be a common problem for subaru foresters, and possibly other manual transmission subarus (for ple,://forums.vmag.com/suvsubaru0200/messages/5197.html).

My 98 forester had the right rear bearing changed 3 times by non dealer chain. Started making noise again. When i went to subaru, themechanic told me that it's common. He has been replacing them with legacy bearings and has not had any complaints.also the vent on top of rear differential blows or sweats diff fluid out onto differential. Potential for freeze up of differential once all fluid is gone. Mechanic claims he would have to open differential and "notch" some metal guard in there to prevent this. This along with bearings-$600.

Unable to fit child car seat in to back seat because of seat belt positioning/design.yh

My parents recently gave my daughter a 1998 subaru forester and she is having problems getting the baby's carseat to tighten down properly.i emailed subaru about this problem and they suggested using a rolled towel to fill the void and make it tighter.she has taken the car to serveral dealerships and they say they know of no problems.is the rolled towel safe to use?she makes sure that her carseat is properly installed, even purchasing a ratcheting system to tighten.we are very concerned about this, even to the point of selling the car.

1. Left air/heat vent non-functional. Air/heat is pushed out with almost no force, unlike right vent, which blows with significantly greater force. Brought this complaint to dealer who said he had the same problem with his car. Said it was design flaw, did nothing to address problem. 2. A spot of oil or grease-like substance appeared on rear left seat back. At first thought it was nothing, now stain has grown to cover almost a third of the entire seat back. The leak is obvious and growing, the seat back continuosly greasy and wet. Dealer notified, claimed there was nothing he could do about it.

The subaru forester cited in this complaint was purchased new at woodbridge jeep subaru in woodbridge va. On august 29, 1998.unknown to us at the time of purchase, the 4 wheel alignment was misaligned.on august 25, 2000, my wife was on an extended trip when the "check engine" light came on for no readily apparent reason.this prompted her to return home and us to try to contactwoodbridge jeep subaru which we soon learned had quit selling subarus.we then contacted the next closest subaru dealer which was reynolds cadillac subaru in orangeva., a distance of36 miles one way from my residence.onaugust 30, 2000 , we took the car to the said dealership in orange.the dealership checked the car and could not determine why the "check engine" light came on.the dealership did, however, inform us that therear tires had worn excessively towards the outside tread to the extent that it would not pass inspection because the tire had worn down to the belts on outer part of tire.the excessive wear, i was informed by the dealer representative, was due to a misalignment of the all-wheel drive system.i was told to make another appointment to get the car aligned and to getnew tires put on the car.in the interim the said dealership was to contact subaru to see what subaru would do aboutthe problem since the tires had obviously worn prematurely.onseptember 6. 2000, after driving back to the dealership, we were informed that subaru had agreed to pay for the alignment and 65% of the cost to replace the tires due to the specifications for the alignment being wrong at the factory.we inquired why there wasn't a recall on the 1998 subaru forester and were informed that there "justwasn't"that subaru had since changed the specifications for theirforesters.

My '98 subaru forester is experiencing rear wheel bearing failure again. These bearings are defective and fail often, from what i've read on the web.

Increasing grinding noise from rear of car; dealer inspected and found failing right real wheel bearing; repair found failed seal on axle; one control arm replaced along with axle and bearing.

The subaru forrester was purchased on 8/25/2000.the above tire (and 3 other tires) were brand new on the vehicle which showed 24,900 miles on the odometer.these tires have had excellent care and we have been especially careful to maintain the correct air pressure. The tire failed suddenly, that is went entirley flat in about 5 seconds at 55 mph.as far as we know, the tire was not punctured just prior to the failure.both poquet auto and the local firestone dealer promptly worked with us to replace the tire and rebalance the new unit at no cost to us. We are grateful for their quick service and cooperation. While we have had excellent service from past sets of firestone tires on previously owned automobiles, we are somewhat concerned about the road worthiness of these tires considering the recent publicity regarding firestone tires of this model in the r15 series. We do not expect any action on the part of the nhtsa, firestone, or poquetbut thought it best to report this unexpected tire failure.( dot number: unknown tire size: p225/60r16 )

On march 9, 2000 i took my car in to les schwab to have my tires rotated.the serviceman came out to my car to write up the paperwork and as he was checking my tires out he said that he wouldn't rotate my tires due to extreme wear on all tires. He apologized but he said there was no possible way that they needed to be replaced.so reluctantly i had to replace my tires as i thought it would be better to be safe rather than sorry as i was going on a road trip in a month.these tires had extremely low mileage to be replacing them at 29,860 miles as they should have lasted another 30,000 miles if not more.( dot number: ? tire size: p205/75r15 )

The 15" wilderness that came stock with this forester had to be replaced at approximately 29,800 miles.i took it in for a tire rotation and les schwab informed that they could not rotate the tires as they had to be replaced due to extreme wear.those 15" tires should have lasted at least another 30,000 miles.i think that all wilderness tires regardless of size should be recalled as they are definitely a defective tire.( dot number: )

While driving, tires wobble causing the front end to wobble, when accelerator pressure is released the wobble goes away until tires get warmed up, then the wobble does not go away, tires were replaced before due to the same reason, dealer states this is atire problem and not an alignment problem, tires are firestone tires, size p285/75r15, dot # hxlr1800.

I did not have an accident, at my 26,000 mile check up 2 different dealers told me my tires were worn out.i was highly concerned that original equipment should wear out at 26,000 miles.they refused to cover them in the 30,000 mile replacement clause.soon after firestone started having recalls, i believe my tires are defective not worn out. Security system goes off when hazard lights are engaged/abs brakes squeak. In addition, while pulling out of parking spot, vehicle lunged forward unexpectedly, and engine check light comes on.

Engine started to race while driving, transmission won't engage without grinding. Needs new clutch. Not sure why a clutch should go in 2 years of having the car.

Consumer proceeded to pull into a parking space then the vehicle surged forward unexpectedly and started to accelerate.

My 1998 subara forester went into a "sudden acceleration".luckily, no one was killed, but the car sustained significant damage.

*yd

Cruise control engaged at 66 mph and it would reduce speed to 50 mph, and momentarily lose acceleration.dealer was not notified at this time. Please provide further details.

The plastic !! speedometer cable gears (2) failed , causing speedometer failure , at oil temp light to flash , check engine light to come , erratic idle, cruise control failure, engine stall . If this is not dangerous i don't know what else is !! cost me $1300 to have it fixed and yes the parts are available !

This is the 2nd time i had a crack appear in my windshield. The first time was in late may 1998 when i was washing the car and sprayed cold water on it i heard a crack. I took it to the subaru dealer in reno and they said it was really caused by a slight pebble that hit the windsheild. Then on 23 nov 98 after driving that day i noticed the next day that another crack again in the lower left hand (from drivers position) part of the windsheild another (yet smaller than the first) crack. It appears that a pebble may have caused it. If this is all it takes to crack these windsheilds then something is wrong. I have been driving many years a lot of them overseas in europe where there are more gravel roads than in the us and never had this happen. Now twice in less than 6 months! something must be wrong with the design or the material used in the manufgacture of the windsheild.

While riding on highway pebbles hitwindshield causingit to break.

The winshield glass chips very easily from minor stone hits at highway speed. I encountered 3 chips in a period of 3 months, driving on an interstate highway at 65 miles per hour. I think the glass is too vulnerable to breakage which compromises the safety of the occupants.

After owning the forester just 3 months, the windshield had three chips in it which then spread into a crack across the driver's viewing area.after only 21,000 miles the clutch disc/plate had to be replaced and was not a warranty matter.after 42,000 miles a bearing in the rear axle has gone bad and the clutch is beginning to make the same noise for which it had to be replaced earlier.i am most disappointed in this vehicle.000 miles,000 miles the

Windshield glass easily damaged.has sandblasted appearance from road dirt. Impairs vision.windshield, rear and side windows easily scratched by ice scraper that did not damage glass on other cars.
