Tractor trailer veers left on highway.1994 nissan strikes left side of 2001 strick trailer, underrides the trailer, severely compromising the occupant capsule.side underride injures at least 1900 people per year, killing at least 77 per year, likely much higher.a simple guard along the sides of trailers would prevent compromise of the occupant capsule in impacts at speeds otherwise survivable.the guard can be covered in such a manner that it improves the fuel efficiency, more than offsetting any loss of fuel efficiency due to extra weight, and saves more money than the cost of the guard itself.
