The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the suspension warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was serviced per an unknown recall. The vehicle was serviced at michael's toyota of bellevue (3080 148th ave se, bellevue, wa 98007, (425) 455-9500), but the air bag warning indicator remained illuminated after the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 95,000.
Passenger seat sensor is too sensitive. Placing a weight such as a mobile phone activates the passenger airbags. In the case of an accident this could be dangerous to a passenger or cause additional unnecessary repairs. The vehicle is factory including the seats, electronics, and airbags. This issue has been around since vehicle was purchased. If the engineer is in, this issue is present. Accidentally deployed airbags may cause injury it death.
The contact owned a 2013 scion fr-s. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact's vehicle crashed into the rear of a second vehicle. During the crash, the vehicle sustained severe damage to the front end; however, the air bag deflated with a four inch hole after deploying. The driver sustained facial and chest injuries, a fractured sternum, and a lumbar spine. Medical attention was received. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed. The manufacturer was notified, but the local dealer was not. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 33,000.
Valve spring recall was done less than 2k miles ago on this vehicle. It currently has a little over 49,000 miles on it. It is now experiencing severe power loss. When taken into the dealership for evaluation they said it was caused due to sudden timing chain failure, including all the gears and coils related to timing chains, all the way down to a bad ecu. Toyota is refusing to take any responsibility.
Ignition coil cel came on rarely at high 5-7k rpm gear shifts and first appeared around 25k, now at 37k miles it comes on consistently at high 5-7k rpm shifts.transmission had to be replaced at 15k miles due to gears grinding with the clutch fully depressed when driving in any speeds.coolant tank was improperly sealed permitting water to evaporate, i used electric tape to make a seal.engine did not have a high pitch cricket-like noise upon purchase and within 100 miles and since it has a high pitched noise when idle.passenger's window switch does not auto scroll upon pressing the 2nd notch about 10% of the time in any condition.both driver and passenger windows have very distinct 3 inch wide streak marks from scrolling up and down.the center of the interior dashboard has been slightly warped since 15k miles.
While driving, the steering wheel is loose and easily turns left, almost on its own. Where as turning it to the right is tight and more difficult. This makes driving very difficult and dangerous, especially on windy days. I've read about it here and there online while trying to figure out whats happening and i am not the only person who has had this issue. One person stated that the steering sensor needed alignment.
Received vavle spring recall notice in november and read up on the recall, realized in january there were tons of failures after recall. Held off until march 1 when i saw new training had been done. Took car in for recall service to northridge toyota at 100,1xx miles. March 12th got the car back. Drove it until april 18th noticed light knocking noise, april 19th car started shaking violently at a stop light. Upon accelerating car started horrendously knocking and screeching. Had car towed back to dealer with 101,0xx miles (less than the mandatory 1200 mile warranty on services toyota has). Toyota states not related to recall, and requests $2700 to just take the engine out and look at it. Rep stated might be oil related and sent photo of oil pan with golden oil in it (from recall) and about a pound of metal flakes. Contacted corporate filed a claim and am awaiting response. Absolutely absurd they still have the nerve to say this isnt related when so many people are having the same issue.
On march 19th 2019 i had the j02 valve spring recall performed on my 2013 scion frs with 74,502 miles on the odometer. Work was done by wyatt johnson toyota of clarksville tn. I chose this dealer because the also own a subaru dealership. They assured me that this was the 12th frs that they had performed the recall on with no history of problems. I picked up my car 3 days later with 74,505 miles. I drove the 100 miles to my home via interstate 24, running at 70-80 mph. I noticed a ticking noise after an hour of driving. By destinations end i had severe rattling noise from drivers side of engine and rough idle. Now with 294 miles total since repair after the engine is running rougher and emitting squealing and rattling, rough idle and trying to die. It was suggested by wyatt johnson toyota that i not drive the car to them for inspection rather take it to my local dealer. I delivered the car to coad toyota of paducah ky today, april 2nd 2019 with 74,801 miles. I await thier inspection. This was a great running engine. Now i suspect it is on the verge of failure. I have suggested draining and inspecting the oil for evidence of unusual wear.
I drive a frs, automiatic. Bought it used with 80,000 miles. I started having problems two months into owning it. Had a feeling like it was trying to stall. Engine light came on with the traction light. Code read p0019. Car would shake viciously when i when stop at a red light. Shook when i reversed sometimes. Started idling really low. Took it to the dealer they said it wasn't under warranty. They said the whole transmission needed to be replaced, $6,450. Read a lot of similar problems from other frs owners. Call corporate, they build a case for me. Completely blew me off, because the car wasn't serviced with them throughout 30,000 miles by owner before. They said they wouldn't help a used car. My household holds 6 toyota cars and they didn't do one thing to help, but offered $1,000 if i bought a new car off them. I'm in school and have to pay other things and i trusted them and their vehicles and was just blown off like nothing. It sucks to finally buy your dream car and only to find out there's so many problems with it. Toyota failed me.odometer reads 87,000
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact received notification of an unknown recall. The vehicle was then taken to a local dealer and the engine was replaced. The contact then stated while driving the vehicle two months later, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was then taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the oil valve needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred two years later. The vehicle was then towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the engine needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist due to the warranty coverage being expired. The failure mileage was approximately 82,900.
I'll be driving and rpm will dip so fast sometime cars dies but happens every now and then. Sometimes in start up and or just just a stop light
I have experienced major problems following the valve spring recall on the scion fr-s. Approximately 1 month following the recall which was completed in march, my vehicle began experiencing a vibration, a loud rattling sound, and an engine knock. I took the vehicle to the dealership that completed the recall to have them inspect it. The dealership tried to give me the run around, ron hubbard toyota in gallatin tn, eventually i fought with them and got them to inspect it. After over a month of calling and fighting with them and going to the dealership they told me it was a cracked flex plate causing the problems and tried to charge me 1500$. After much fighting and contacting toyota headquarters and the dealership, i was persistent enough that they covered it. By now i had been without a vehicle for a month and half. I finally got the car back about two weeks ago and drove it one time almost 200 miles to run some errands. Well the vehicle experience the same engine rattle and knock but much worse. I limped the vehicle back home. When i started it up friday to take it back to the dealership, it was much worse to the point that it sounded like the engine was going to fall apart and a very strong burning odor began to emit from the car. I was worried following reading about other problems so i immediately turned the vehicle off and contacts my insurance company who towed the vehicle to the dealership. This has been the worst experience i've ever dealt with.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in an unknown recall where the spring valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle received the recall remedy. While driving approximately 70 mph, the contact heard a rumbling sound around the engine as if metal were loose. The contact took the vehicle to deluca toyota (located at 1719 sw college rd, ocala, fl 34471, 352-732-0770) where it was diagnosed that the short block failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that there was also a rattling sound coming from the steering column; however, the vehicle had not been officially diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 41,900.
On june 28th i was driving to work on a rainy day. While taking a curve the car lost traction cause the traction light to come on as well as the abs light. A few minutes down the road the car started braking without me even pressing down on the break.
Took our 2013 scion fr-s to temecula valley toyota for j02 valve spring replacement recall.after about 6,000 miles of easy driving, fr-s began to run rough.this rough running was only intermittent and eventually subsided.rough running engine returned along with what i considered a "rod knock".we immediately parked the vehicle and did not use it after first noticing the knock.vehicle towed back to dealership who performed recall.dealership informs us that the engine is "destroyed" (their words).dealership claims rod bearing or bearings damaged due to "oil starvation".dealership quotes us $17,000 to repair vehicle, including a replacement short block.we refuse dealership's offer and ask that they leave engine out of the vehicle.dealership places engine back into our vehicle and sets the driver's side heads in the trunk with other various parts placed on the back seat (nice touch).we have vehicle towed back to our home.we located a subaru mechanic in our town, remove engine from vehicle, take engine to said mechanic who is going to inspect for damage, balance, rebuild, and install the engine back into our vehicle.mechanic's cost = $6,400.upon our partial teardown of engine i found, what i consider, an excessive amount of rubbery compound on the front case of the engine.i also found this same type of rubbery compound covering a substantial portion of the oil pick up tube screen.i do not know the condition of the oiling passages within the block.we found very little metallic material in the oil pan.i am suspicious that this rubbery compound made its way into the oil and clogged oiling passages.dealership is denying all.my complaint?:dealership was over aggressive in their use of sealant, clogging oil passages and causing oil starvation to the bearings.then, denying responsibility and quoting a high dollar amount to repair
Experience sudden loss of power and engine failure 37 miles after the j02 recall was performed. I was driving for about 10 minutes when suddenly felt the engine had lost power, turned the engine off and coasted to get out of the way of traffic. Noticed a lot of smoke coming out of the hood and a oil leaking from under the engine.-dropped off the car for the j02 recall to be done on 11 march 2019 with 42,581 miles.-recall done, car picked up on 16 march 2019.-engine failed on 18 march 2019, millage 42,618.the dealer technician explained that a right side intake rocker had come loose and subsequently was pinched by the exhaust cam, ejecting it through the valve cover. The rocker blew a whole through the valve cover causing a large amount of oil to pour on to the hot exhaust manifold.since then, the dealership assumed the cost of the repairs but do not accept responsibility for the failure.
J02 recall done in december of last year for registration, did an oil change and found metal shaving and then the engine gave out in april. Corporate wasn't any help, even after finding fipg in oil pick up. Paid for rebuilt, and the car has a rough idle on cold start. I have taken it back 3 times. Took it to another dealer and they diagnosed it and said fipg was found in oil pick. And tested everything. Rebuilt wasn't done right from first dealer. First dealer also damaged the hood during the rebuilt. The hood hasn't been properly fixed. Please help in any way possible or point me in the right direction.
Took the car in to toyota dealer for a safety recall on the engine. Now it runs rough and the engine knocksall the time.the check engine light is on. The dealer says it is normal after the recall.it sounds like a diesel now and i am afraid to drive it.
On highway, vehicle @ 3400-4000 rpm, 70-75 mph, a heavy knocking noise started from the engine, moments later same knocking can be heard at 2000 rpm, had to pull over on highway. As soon as the car fully stopped (while still in drive) the engine stalled out and could not turn back on. Had the vehicle towed back to the dealership that performed the recall work for the spring valves replacement.they tore down the motor and advised me the issue was a spun rod.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated while coming to a complete stop, the vehicle would stall without warning. The contact stated no warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 21,003.
Toyota of el cajon performed the j02 recall for engine valve springs on august 13, 2020 at 98, 448 mileage.toyota of el cajon performed service oil/filter change, coolant change, and multipoint inspection june 2021 (work order 356309). The engine of my 2013 scion fr-s malfunctioned with a rod knock on july 13, 2021 at 105k mileage, eleven months after j02 recall performed. There were no warnings lamps, oil lights, or any messages prior to failure. The only symptom was the engine rod knock when the car starts. Toyota of el cajon technician and shop floorman do not know the cause, yet they attempt to deny that this issue relates to the j02 recall. They said it would cost a "couple thousand" to take apart the engine to investigate the cause. They said it would be $9k out of my pocket to replace the short block and would be "terribly expensive". I towed my unfixed vehicle home through my insurance. Vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance or others. I am contacting toyota corporate to create claim #. Engine failure after j02 recall is a well-known issue. There are several other cases of this happening and a class action lawsuit due to workmanship error and sealant. This issue should be fixed by the dealership/manufacturer without cost to consumer. The safety, reliability and reputation of the vehicle depends on it. Do the right thing!
My car is roughly 85k miles right now. At 20k miles a cel light came on indicating that something was wrong with my camshaft and timing chain. Under warranty, the cost of that was $2500. At 60k my car starts misfiring, rough idling and even stalling sometimes. I get it serviced again. At 82k my car received another cel stating that the right side of my cam system needed to be replaced (according to the dealer). Only this time it cost me out of pocket - $2500. My car is now at 86k. Another cel popped up. Rough idling. Weird knock noise. Stalled on the highway while moving 3 times!!!!! very dangerous! spark plugs and oil changes were done before this. I've had the same problem with this car and it has not even reached 100,000 miles yet. I've researched and almost every 2013 model has the same problem. I've researched about valve springs and how it correlates to the camshaft and pistonsas well how it operates. Broken valves will cause misfire and will cause engine problems- misfire, rough idle, stalling. Every symptom my car has had indicated that there's something wrong internally and my 100% correct guess is towards the valve springs. I've read thatthere is a recall about this problem yet my vin doesn't indicate that there is. Even though the production of my vehicle falls in the threshold of the recall. This is dangerous and needs immediate attention. Almost had two car accidents because of the engine stalling on me. It's unfair how costly this is when this isn't the only complaint about this situation. Are you guys waiting for a horrible car accident to accur before taking action? thank you for your time.
After several weeks of smelling burnt oil in the cabin, i discovered a serious oil leak on the engine.the engine has a block off plate on the right rear camshaft area.it is a stamped steel plate held on with three bolts and sealed with rtv.the oil was leaking around the bottom bolt and dripping onto the exhaust pipe.scion dealer was contacted and they told me that all they could do was re-apply the sealant and hope for the best.they also commented that it would fail again in the same place because of the design.i ordered an aftermarket cover plate that incorporates an o ring into the seal.this plate is guaranteed not to leak if installed according to the instructions.web forums indicate that this is a very common problem with manual transmission equipped fr-s.the automatic transmission version has a pump in place of the block off plate.this is a potential fire hazard and owners should not have to buy aftermarket parts to correct the problem.scion/toyota (subaru) should design a plate that does not leak onto the hot exhaust pipe.
Scion frs engine valve cover oil leak onto hot exhaust. While operating vehicle under normal conditions the vehicle started to fill the cabin with the smell of burning oil. After a few more minutes; smoke started to come out of the hood. Then after a short drive to find a place to park; the vehicle was producing substantially more white smoke out from under the hood while parked. Upon further inspection the driver side valve cover was leaking oil onto the top of the headers.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the engine stalled on the highway while driving 50 mph. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per an unknown recall regarding the valve springs that were fracturing. The contact believed the recall repair caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was taken to wolfchase toyota (2201 n germantown pkwy, cordova, tn 38016, (901) 377-8000) for the initial recall repair and engine stalling. The manufacturer admitted there was a failure and could possibly assist with providing a rental vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 67,000.
Saturday, 2nd february, i drop off the car at toyota of santa cruz for the valve spring recall. The car is finished about a week later, i pick it up and drive it for another week with no issues. I mainly use the car to commute to milpitas. Today, 21st february, on my way to work on hwy17, just past the last scotts valley exit, the car starts knocking and losing a bit of power. There was no "check engine" or warning lights at all. I downshift from 6th to 5th and the car dies. I coast off the highway, onto vine hill rd. And call aaa, my boss, and then call toyota of santa cruz to give them a heads-up that i'm bringing the car in. When i arrive with the car on a flatbed, about five or six techs pop their heads out from the service garage and start looking at each other. I look at them, they look at me point to my car and shake my head. They disappear. The shop foreman and the service manager say that they will fix the car for free if they can prove it was their fault, even though the car has approx. 1k miles on it since the service. I told them i have hours of mind-numbing dashcam video of my commute to prove i didn't abuse the car. 2/22/2019 update:toyota called today and stated they believe the problem is internal, and the engine is coming out and will be taken apart to find the issue.2/25/2019 update: service called and said they pulled the oil pan and found the #4 cylinder rod bearing spun.update: 03/04/2019they looked into it and found that it should meet certain criteria with what they have at toyota and in their database and say that there must have been something going on before the car broke. For example: running a custom tune then re-flashing the stock tune back before my handing the car over to them.update: i took the car to an independent shop which found gasket material in the oil pickup tube ~25% blocked.
I took my car in for a recall repair regarding replacement of the engine valve springs on 1/8/19. The car was ready for pickup two and a half weeks later on 1/25/19. After exactly two months, on march 8th my car began shaking and wobbling while i was driving on the freeway. When the check engine light turned on and i noticed my car began slowing down, i immediately pulled over to the side right side of the highway as the car shut off. After i tried turning it back on, the car would turn off after a couple seconds. I got the car towed back home and contacted toyota. They did not provide a tow truck so i had to tow it in for them to inspect it. In the first update, they told me it had something to do with the lubrication on the sides of the engine. During the second and final update they had a second tech come in for inspection and concluded it was an internal engine failure. I am now in worse situation than before and i feel like i am being charged to fix something that was not broken in the first place. Not to mention the estimate to fix and install a brand new engine will cost up to $11,000. I am currently awaiting for a responses from corporate.
I was driving on the road near my house and the car started making a knocking noise so i pulled over and checked the oil and it was fine so i kept driving and it started getting worse so i had to tow the car home
After seeing numerous toyota j02 (2018) valve train recall catastrophes, i declined the service. When the ca dmv required it for registration renewal, i waited until the deadline so the toyota mechanics would get more practice on other cars before servicing mine in january 2020 with 98k miles odometer. I thought the strategy worked, until november 2020 at 111k miles odometer. On my daily freeway commute, with a clatter and then a bang, a hole was blown in the side of the engine, out of which oil sprayed onto the cat producing billowing smoke, cel's, and then a low oil alert. By the time i got off the freeway, the engine still ran but was knocking. Puente hills toyota recovered a rocker arm that had somehow detached itself from its swivel, thrashed around inside the valve case, and then got ejected out through the valve cover. They insisted the failure was not covered under their service warranty, which was 12-months unlimited miles in print, for depraved reasons they additionally refused to put in writing. They, and other local shops, attempted to quote me to swap in a used engine, but now there's coincidentally a nationwide shortage of these engines, turning my car, which had run 98k miles flawlessly, into a total loss. The nhtsa failed the public for forcing and then not rescinding a reckless recall decision, where the hazards of a specialized engine service performed by unspecialized dealership mechanics dwarfed the hazards of taking no action. In trying to prevent dozens of potential engine stalls, they caused hundreds of total loss engine failures. A level of systemic incompetence and corruption has also been exposed in the toyota dealerships of north america. I only hope the nhtsa, toyota, class action lawyers, or someone can step up.
*regarding my 2013 scion fr-s valve spring recall. What do i do with a car that, if i drive it, the engine may suffer a catastrophic failure; if i take it to the dealership for "repair", the engine may suffer a catastrophic failure? normally when you purchase a product with a major defect, you exchange it for a new one. (throws up hands) this is idiocracy.
So i took my fr-s to get a recall back in december and following that my car had rattling noises and an oil leakage that the dealership covered. After a month they gave me my car back and it sounded fine. However, i continued hearing that rattle noise just softer, but two months later the following occurred to me. While driving my car on the highway an engine light turned on. After i got off the highway i pulled over and plenty more lights in the headgear turned on and i turned off my car and afterwards it would not turn on completely and made a rattling noise. I had to tow my car back home.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). After the repair, while driving approximately 40 mph, a clinking noise was heard and the vehicle shook and shut down. Also, the engine oil warning indicator illuminated briefly and then dimmed. The vehicle was towed back to john elway's crown toyota (909-212-0546, located at 1201 kettering dr, ontario, ca 91761) where the recall was repaired. The technician stated that the engine needed to be taken apart to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was taken apart and the technician stated that the number two rod bearing was not found and the number three rod bearing was worn. The technician stated that the failures were not part of the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and agreed with the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 56,678.
Catastrophic engine failure, on the road, after performing the repair for the j02 recall on the valve springs. Dealer who performed repair was reluctant to help me tow my vehicle to their shop. After reaching out to corporate hq, they sent a tow truck for my car. The dealer very clearly did not appreciate me going over them and straight to toyota, because they treated me very poorly once i arrived at their shop. I have not received any information on the status of my vehicle since dropping it off. My engine has less than 60k miles on it, and ran beautifully before taking it in for the recall.
I'm a owner of a 2013 scion frs and had an issue with the engine after the recall was made on april of 2019. On july 6 i was going the speed limit from las cruses to el paso tx i was going 70 and started hearing a knocking sound coming from the engine i pulled up immediately and car didn't want to start. I immediately towed it to my house and took it to the dealership on july 11 i had to rent a u-haul to get it towed.i'm experiencing the same issue that everybody is facing after the recall was made. Engine has only 138k miles and its a shame that this happened so quickly. I hope they come to their senses and help all of us that have the same issue after the recall was made. I took my car to the dealershipbut haven't had a call or message from them. Still waiting for a response.
Took the car in to toyota dealer for a safety recall on the engine. Now it runs rough and the engine knocksall the time.the dealer says it is normal after the recall.it sounds like a diesel now and i am afraid to drive it. I own two of these and they both have the same problem.
Safety recall j02 valve springs replacement
2013 scion fr-s had a valve spring recall. While driving, as soon as i approached a stop sign the engine stalled. Soon as i re-ignited the engine i heard a loud knocking sound. My vehicle was only going 10-15 mph with the sound of the engine getting louder. This event occurreda year/8000miles after the recall service. I believe this incident was contributed by the the recall service.
Subaru valve spring recall.toyota did the recall for valve springs on my 13 scion frs. Too much sealant was used and it caused the engine to spin a bearing. My warranty is expired and it will be 6000$ to replace the engine. Toyota has not gotten back with me on admitting the recall caused the blown engine. However there are alot of frs that have had this issue due to the recall and too much sealant.i was driving down the highway and the car died and would not start again. Had to have it towed to toyota.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the engine began to make an abnormal tapping noise as the vehicle began to stall. The contact pulled over before the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to john elway's crown toyota (1201 kettering dr, ontario, ca 91761). The contact was informed that engine debris from the crankshaft was found in the oil pan. The contact stated that months prior to failure, he took his vehicle into the same dealer to have the vehicle repaired under a manufacturer's recall for the engine spring valves. The contact was informed by the dealer that if it was discovered that the failure was linked to the recall, the cost of a new engine would be covered however, if the failure was not related to the recall, the vehicle would be repaired out of pocket. The diagnostic test showed that the failure was not related to the recall. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The was not repaired. The failure mileage was 58,150.*dt
I brought my 2013 scion fr-s to get the valve spring recall done back in january. The vehicle was stationary expect for saturday and sunday. For both those a day the vehicle traveled about 25 miles in total. Since i was commuting to college. Fast forward to june when my sim eater was done. I drove the car for about a week when i started to hear some knocking noises in my engine bay. I thought something was just lose so i took it to my local mechanic so see what he can do. He wanted to see if something was lose under the car so he left es the car on a lift and started to remove the underbelly metal protector when a price of metal fell. No one has touched the car since the recall. So we decided to stop and take it back to the dealer service which was the dch toyota city service center in mamaroneck new york. After they inspected the car they said they checked the top of the engine were the recall was done. But the car has a subaru boxer engine we're the valve springs are located on the side of the engine. They later said they don't know why it happening when it's a 6 year old engine with about 30,000 miles. (in my opinion they just don't want to deal with the issues that they might have caused.) i later checked online and other car dealers are having similar issues
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. After the vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine), it immediately experienced loss of power and sputtering. The vehicle was taken back to hamer toyota (11041 sepulveda blvd, mission hills, ca) where it was diagnosed that the engine gasket and camshaft were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred approximately two months later. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine rod bearing was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the failures were not present prior to the recall repair. The failure mileage was 92,400.
The valve springs located inside the engine of the affected vehicles may fracture, which may cause an abnormal noise or engine malfunction. In the worst case, this may result in the engine stalling during driving and the inability to restart the vehicle.
The vehicle (2013 scion fr-s, 69000 miles) was in a factory authorized service center [xxx] to have recall j02 (nhtsa recall campaign 18v772000) performed. We were notified that the car suffered a major engine problem following the recall service, but before the car was returned to us. The description of the circumstances involved indicated that the car was on a test drive following the completion of the recall service and required towing back to the service center. We were informed of this two days after its occurrence. A visual observation of the partially disassembled engine indicates likely oil starvation as the cause of the problem. At this point in time, the service center has retained the vehicle and parts pending a determination by toyota.at this point in time, the service center is of the opinion that a non-factory oil filter caused oil starvation. The oil filter had been installed on the car and functioning appropriately for approximately 3500 miles prior to the service. The oil filter was not replaced during the engine out service which required replacement of internal engine components. We were not notified during the 9 days that the service centered had possession of the car prior to the problem that there were any concerns related to the oil filter - the make and model of the oil filter has only become a point of discussion after oil starvation occurred.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I took my car in for the safety recall j02 valve springs replacement. About 5000 miles or so later my vehicle shut off unexpectedly while i was on the interstate. Luckily i was able to cross traffic and exit without causing injury. My vehicle was towed to the dealership. They said they found metal shavings in the oil pan so they looked further and determined a rod bearing had seized. There has not been any issues with my engine prior to the recall and i have kept up with vehicle maintenance. My car no longer has a warranty and the dealership said i would have to pay out of pocket for an engine replacement. There are numerous complaints and articles online stating rod bearings have been destroyed post recall. This is a result of too much sealant applied during the recall, causing excess to block oil channels.
The vehicle was on the highway for a road trip. During the trip the vehicle started smoking excessively. Upon pulling the vehicle to the side we inspected the engine to see a large hole in the engine block. The vehicle was rendered inoperable upon further inspection.
Car was recalled for replacement of valve springs and this service caused engine failure(bearing) probably sealant seeped into oil causing blockage of oil flow
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the vehicle made an abnormal sound and stalled. The vehicle would not restart and was towed back to the residence. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnosis nor repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the failure occurred. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
I took the fr-s in for the valve spring recall. Within 200 miles of driving there was a noticeable clicking sound coming from the engine. It was idling rough to the point of stalling. I was luckily right down the road from the dealer. I took the vehicle back in to the dealership. They said it was not from the recall repair. Toyota would cover the parts but i would have to cover labor. After this i started reading about all the other fr-s/brz owners having similar issues.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. While driving 5 mph, the engine stalled. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be repaired where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 42,000.
After engine worms up, let the engine idle and stays at 600 rpm for a few seconds, jump to 1100 rpm then down to 600 and 400, engine shakes up like is going to stall and check engine light and vsc light come on. Dealer told me is a camshaft gear defect that will not change the angle for the variable valve timing(vvt).other parts needed to be change are oil control valve and camshaft vvt sensor.toyota must issue a recall for these, more than 250 cases were reports on ft86club.com.same exact problem is shown on the subaru brz because is the exact same car.
My 2013 10 series scion frs has started knocking at 81,*** miles. There are known manufacturing mechanical defects that attribute to this catastrophic failure and have been occurring in a pattern amongst us frs,86, and brz. I was denied my claim due to "oil and coolant level being low" but i know [xxx] well that i took care of that car as if it was my child. Toyota and subaru needs to fix their issues and cover our warranties which they choose to deny to get out of work. Toyota and subaru will lose business if this is not addressed. Too many of these accounts are arising. Something needs to be done.parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I got a recall notice from toyota, and took it in february 2, 2019 for the valve spring replacement. I got my car back february 12th 2019 & after leave the dealer that day it started bogging, so i returned it to eliminate the sound that very night. After returning it, i got my car back february 13th 2019 everything appeared to be fine until this past weekend, april 6th i heard a pop in the engine. I began to hear knocking coming from the motor and lost power immediately while on the freeway, i tried turning it on but the motor was dead all lights on the dash were on. I went in, in attempt to "fix" my car due to the recall notice, which has lead me to have a completely inoperable car.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact was informed by advantage toyota of river oaks (1970 river oaks dr, calumet city, il 60409, 708-862-0700) that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). The dealer kept the vehicle for over a month due to the recall. When the vehicle was returned to the contact, it shook uncontrollably without warning. After taking the vehicle back to the dealer on several occasions for the same failure, the contact was informed that she would be charged for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed. While driving, the vehicle shook uncontrollably again, made a loud sound, and shut off without warning. The contact had the vehicle towed back to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and notified the contact that they would have to perform a diagnostic test to determine the cause of the failure. The contact refused to pay for the diagnostic. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000.
Takata recall, i was driving my vehicle and i heard a noise and then it stalled out completely on interstate 20. I barely made it off the busy interstate with just using the speed i had built up. I had it towed. I told toyota stonecrest about it and they refused to do the recall because they didn't want to do it. Now my car has been sitting in my garage for months. They also had my car for a week before telling me they wasn't going to do it. I lost money and time and they could careless. As you will see in the documents nothing was wrong on 1st document and the other i have problems. They didn't want to fix my engine.
I had recall for the valve spring done on my car about 4-6 k miles and the engine while driving home on a highway at 60 mph and the engine started making a knocking noise. I drove to dealer ship 6/13/19 as i writing this and the noise has gotten louder sense i have arrived.
On february13, 2019, i took my car to the toyota dealership to address a recent recall to fix a valve spring. March 5, my car lost power and made a knocking noise. My check engine and traction control light went on. I took my car back to the dealership on march 5, they reset the code and told me nothing was wrong. On the way home, it broke again. On march 6, they changed the exhaust vvt oil control. One week later, it broke again. Today, may 31st, the engine stalled, i've lost power and the check engine and traction control light came on again. I am the original owner, service the car regularly and have never had problems until toyota performed this recall. Doing research online has shown me i am not alone in this complaint. Attached is a link with 72 other owners all reporting the same problems. Https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sel4x84cy_ynrkcws9gnoiyntwljdotgqzu1j4rlzow/edit#gid=0
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was not able to restart. The vehicle was towed to daytona toyota (1700, 451 n nova rd, daytona beach, fl 32114) where it was diagnosed that the spun rod bearings and the oil pick up screen were blocked by the sealant and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
I brought my 2013 scion frs in for a j02 valve spring replace and not even 1,100 miles later i had engine problems that led to the damage to my "rocker arm , camshaft " two weeks later the dealership says they will not repair the damage 100% due to the damage wasnt caused from the initial recall. And my warranty is voided because they did the recall. My vehicle has been at the hendrick toyota for a month now and i dont know how i'm going to get it back.
3 months after purchase, car blew a tie rod and had the engine replaced.it had about 38000 miles on it.one month after that repair, a push rod went through a valve cover.both times the car had no oil, and no warning to replace the oil. Dealership is refusing to honor warranty on the second problem.
After the j02 recall was done on my car, it felt slow and would feel like it would stall out within a span of 6 months from the recall was done on my car. I mainly use my car just for work, and one day i decided to take a small trip on my local mountain highway for a day of sight seeing. Well on the way back my car felt very unresponsive so i had decided to pull over and see what was wrong with my car when out of no where my car had died on me right as i made turn, leaving me stranded after a blind corner, leaving me exposed for a car to almost hitting me from behind. Luckily some good folks helped me out by stopping traffic before the corner and pushing my car out of the way. I thought my car had over heated so i let my car rest for a hour, and i turned on my car and just heard a loud knocking so i immediately turned off my car. When i got my car home through a tow truck, i drained my oil and found metal pieces in my oil.
Following the j02 recall work my 2013 frs was picked up and brought to me 4.1 miles away when i got off work and started my vehicle i noticed a ticking sound coming from the back passenger side of the engine. Upon acceleration there is a distinct knocking coming from the engine, since then i have driven 12.7 miles including the distance back to the dealer where the vehicle is once again. There also appears to be way too much sealant applied to the engine when they put it back together.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling) by autonation toyota las vegas (6300 w sahara ave, las vegas, nv 89146, (702) 605-5801); however, the check engine warning indicator remained illuminated after the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 69,449.
On february 19, i take my fr-s to the dealer for the j02 valve spring recall.the car runs as normal until march 27, after i drove it across town at highway speed for the first time.as i make the same highway drive the next morning, my engine starts to chatter and shake until it cuts off while driving at speed on the highway.i exited in neutral, coasted to a gas station, hired an uber to get me to work, and later had my car towed to the dealer that did the recall.over the weeks it sat, when i called the dealer told me their mechanics were looking into the nature of the engine failure and were waiting on a ruling by a toyota engineer.after two months, i was told by a third party to call toyota's national office to have a case number assigned.after a few weeks waiting, the dealer requested my service records for the car as i did not take it to the dealer for maintenance, rather did it myself: 5000 mile oil / filter changes, changed air and cabin filters at 30000 mi.the engine only has about 54000 miles.yesterday the service manager finally calls me and tells me the engine replacement has officially been declined because my car wasn't regularly serviced at the dealership.any replacement engine would have to be out of pocket, for what i know was warranty work on a recall that fouled my engine with sealant, something totally unrelated to the frequency or location of my oil changes.the car has sat for over three months.the dealer would not provide me with alternate transportation in the meantime, neither would my insurance as it wasn't a collision, break-in, or act of nature.i paid $1500 for rentals and uber rides for two months, then finally realized i needed to buy another vehicle.i will be seeking litigation in this matter.it is not the role of an absentee engineer to decide whether or not to fix their company's mistakes.
I was driving down the road and felt the car lose power.shortly, after the traction control and check engine light came on.i pulled over and a i slowed the engine died on me.it took several tries and it finally started and i made it home going about 45. The next day i went to town and as i pulled into a parking lot the engine completely died again.i went to the parts store right next door and the code read can shaft sensor fault.i then slowly drove to a family members house andwhere we replaced those sensors.this didn't fix anything.i then took it too my mechanic who proceeded to tell me i needed a new engine.there were multiple codes showing with his code reader.i only remember low oil pressure but the oil was full.tried to drive it back to family members (less than 2 miles)but it didn't make it and i had to have it towed home.i had the valve spring recall repaired in the summer of 2020. My car has 103,000 miles and has had every oil change and had a tune up when i took it to the dealership for the recall.
In 3/20/20 i took my 2013 scion fr-s to get the recall that toyota was offering. I had to do the safety recall because without it i could not get my registration renewed. After about three weeks or so i took a trip that required about four hours of driving too and back. After driving almost four hours my car stopped and never turned back on. After towing my car to a repair shop they told me that my engine had knocked and basically my engine broke and that i needed a new one. Nothing was wrong with my car before the recall but the high pressure fuel system which an employee actually told me not to worry about it because it could be a problem in a couple years but that could not have caused my engine to stall out and break. I just wanted to know if the safety recall for the valve springs in a scion fr-s was the cause and if so i could get a recall for my engine.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. While driving 50 mph, the contact heard the vehicle's rod bearings spinning, which ultimately led toengine failure. In addition, the check engine and oil pressure indicators illuminated along with other unknown warning indicators. The vehicle was taken to vancouver toyota (10455 ne 53rd st, vancouver, wa 98662, (360) 944-3001) where it was diagnosed that the rod bearings failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 66,000. The consumer stated recall performed in jan/feb of 2019.
Takata recall 2,000 miles past warranty, the check engine and traction control lights came on and lost power. Not sure if it happened while i was stopped or intransient. It was early in the morning on my way to work and i had just stopped at a gas station to get a cup of coffee. Toyota changed out the computer free of charge but the problem is still existing.which means it's an internal engine/ transmissionissue. The right rear tail light collectscondensation too. Although it is not presentcurrently in the photo. It is present after every wash or heavy rain. The left window seal rolling up and not sealingproperly. I know their are many more people with these exact same issues, as i have read online but there are no recalls or support from toyota to resolve these issues at this moment.
Toyota scion fr-s j02 valve string recall:after i got recall service on feb, 2019, i drove only 2600 miles, and engine got damaged from inside. (might be rod bearing damage)i was driving around 70 m/h and started to make knocking noise, and i immediately stopped the car, and tow the car to the dealership on 6/2/19 sundaythere are several different cases that the owners got the damages after recall services. I requested toyota several times to investigate my case.toyota refused it, and they mentioned they do not have any program that can support post-j02 recall failurethis is the current history that forum gathering each situations from the frs owners, who fails their engine after j02 recall job done.https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133095&fbclid=iwar0q5vhrhbq4vckd3zo4alg-8dzaztk8qblvg4hyqce3h1trrmwxi9tebgehttps://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133573
The engine is making a rattling noise whenever i try starting the car and it dies after 30 seconds. The rattling noise started happening only after 2 months of buying the car. The noise specifically started happening after i was driving it from work and after taking a u-turn, a rattling noise just started growing louder and louder up until it just slowly died and i had to pull over to the side of the street.
I had the j02 valve spring recall done and 2 weeks and roughly 80 miles later my engune developed a knocking noise and started losing power the dealership that performed the recall denied responsibility even after finding fipg sealent in my oil pickup
Valve spring recall: after toyota performed the repairs outlined in the recall, the vehicle shut off and would not start. This occurred while driving with the loss of all systems to include but not limited to power steering, lights, gauge cluster, radio, etc. The only system operable was the switches in the door to open and close the window. Vehicle appears to have power however no systems operable. This occurred while driving and occurred without warning.
Rod knock happened for two miles headed home and the engine completely shut down. Checked oil levels and they were perfect level.
My new car has been in and out of the shop for the past month (4 times). The check engine light keeps coming on and the dealer does not know how to fix it. The car does not also seem to be able to hold an idle speed. When my foot has the clutch completely depressed and my other foot on the brake, the engine idle just goes from 500 to 1000 and back down to 500 and the car shudders and almost stalls. There seems to be other scion owners of this new car that are having the exact same issue (there are internet post on web forums dating back to june 2012) and toyota/scion does not act like they are aware of this issue at all. I am concerned that the car is going to stall or the engine surge when i am driving it. The car is at a scion dealer for the 4 time and i was given no eta on when the car might be repaired.
Factory safety recall j02 was performed on this frs mar 19, 2018. Mileage was 90283. Engine valve spring replacement. At simi valley toyota. An authorized dealership. On april 2 2020 while driving on a highway loud metal knocking started, then vehicle stalled on road way. An automotive repair specialist listened to the engine and said it sounds like a broken valve knock. Currently the car has been towed to a shop for removal of engine to start repair work. Milage is 105092.less than 15,000 miles for a repair flaw to appear. 24 months since repair work was done to satisfy factory recall of defective valve springs.
Complaint about total engine failure after bringing my 2013 scion frs in for valve spring recall.the vehicle has only 17,000 miles.valve spring recall was done at a toyota dealership.several hundreds miles later, while driving, the engine light comes on and making knocking noise.brought to toyota and they said it was engine failure.this dealer did not even open the engine to verify.
My vehicle had the j02 recall performed on 1-22-2019. Six months later (only 2,000 miles later on the car) the vehicle's engine began to have problems. Various check engine light codes coming on, knocking sounds from engine, rough idle, car is stalling. The toyota service techs have no real answer for the problem. Fast forward another few months and their is metal fragments in the oil!!! the dealership then states that the car needs a new engine!!! this is all happening within only 5,000 miles of having the recall done. The car was perfectly fine before the recall. My car has less than 40,000 miles at the moment. Clearly the recall has led to numerous issues with the growing number of complaints. Us owners should not have to purchase new engines for our vehicles because of this. Please help us!!!! my vehicle no longer feels safe to own or drive!!!!!!!
Took the car in for the valve recall and within a few thousand miles it started to have a very bad knock we were driving when the knock started around 50.. Took it back to the dealer. They pulled the oil pan and was told that it had a bad rod bearing. We are always up on the oil service. Only 1500 miles out of warranty with no help from toyota. I can't believe they won't help out. Toyota is just ditching this problem. To many of the same issues with the same recall and problems.
I took it in for the valve spring recall. I drove it for 8000 miles/9 months later. Car started knocking and stalled. Engine had a oil galley that got clogged, which cause oil starvation. Car ended up needing a new engine, dealership refused to cover the cost of the replacement. The car was being driven home on a residential street.
There is a knocking sound coming from the engine. Car will show all lights on dash board and stop receiving rpms, when you press the gas the car does not move. Car stalled out in middle of highway twice in one day.
I was notified by mail that they're was a safety recall for my 2013 aciom frs which was to replace my engine spring valve at no cost. I took in my car january 18 to have the work done it took around 2 weeks to get a respond back that my car was ready for pick up. I took it out and drove it for about 5 mile to get gas and when i turned on my car it was struggling to turn on and once it turned on it was it was shakingviolently , 3 engine codes came up p0017 p0300p219a. I took it immediately to toyota and all they did was clear my engine codes drove my car for about 30 miles and handed it back to me saying it was safe to drive. I had my car for about 2,000 miles i was driving back home at night and i heard a loud pop inside my engine so i parked the car. The next day i was going to my friend house to change my brakes and while i was on the freeway i head a soft engine knocking and it became louder and louder until the engine completly died on me and i was stranded. Toyota send a tow truck to pick up my car and when they inspected the engine they said i had a cylinder that was destroyed and a rod bearing destroyed and they said it was due to 'oil startvation'.i've owned that car for a year and i have never had a single issue with it, until now that they worked on my engine. They are telling me i gotta pay $8,600 out of pocket for a whole new short block and they don't want to take responsibility for the damages occur after their work.
+1000 miles post engine-spring recall. Returning home on a 134 mile trip. Primarily highway/expressway. Vehicle in motion: after refueling, a quiet, rhythmic knocking sound appeared during acceleration. Within 5 miles, the sound became increasingly louder. Definitely a 'metal-on-metal' type of noise. Minutes later, oil light began to flicker, followed by check-engine light and loss of traction indicator. No change in temperature or fuel quantity. No change in performance, handling or driving condition. Decreased speed (downshifting), to pull of to side of road and the engine stalled. Parked and checked under hood; no smoke, smell or anything out of the ordinary. Was able to restart after multiple attempts to exit the highway and pull to a safer location to call toyota roadside assistance. Was picked up on a flatbed and delivered to toyota of naperville where the recall work had been performed months earlier. I was informed that there is metal in the oil/oil-pan, extremely muddy oil and that a senior tech will be visiting to further assess. There is a possibility of engine-replacement. Awaiting further information.note: all recommended, scheduled maintenance have been performed during ownership.
412.8 miles after having j02 valve spring recall work performed, while driving, the vehicle began making a ticking noise.within 2 minutes of driving, this escalated to loud metallic knocking.i pulled over immediately and had my vehicle towed to the dealership that performed the recall work.that was on february 18th, at 9 am in 2019.my vehicle has 53,610 miles.it is now march 8th, 2019.the dealership still has taken no action after determining that rod bearing #4 was spun.i have been offered no rental, i have to call multiple times to speak with somebody.toyota customer care says that this is not a recall issue, but a workmanship failure, and to work with the dealership.the dealership says to work with customer care.at the dealership, my parts are all thrown on the floor, including a brand new clutch they had just installed.there is now dirt and saltwater being kicked onto my parts that would be reused, and it's infuriating to see my stuff being treated this way.my wife and i have been having to share our only other vehicle and are so terribly inconvenienced that i am losing sleep and not eating well.all i want is for toyota to replace the entire engine, or compensate me to pay another facility to do the work.i have an estimate ready and a shop willing to do the work immediately.please help.
On jan 26, 2019, i send my 2013 frs to do the valve spring recall by toyota, which lasts about two weeks. After about 200 miles added, i heard a couple of times of abnormal noise from the engine, it was like rhythmic knocking. They happened right after i started the engine and can be clearly noticed. The noise became weak in about 1 minute. In addition, i drove it for another 200 miles and the average mpg decreased from 34 to 30.
The contact owns 2013 toyota scion fr-s. The contact stated while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle loss motive power with an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact was concerned that the engine was blown. The contact pulled into a parking lot and had the vehicle towed to joe myers toyota located at (19010 northwest fwy, houston, tx 77065) where a diagnostic test was still pending. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
I brought my 2013 scion fr-s in for the engine spring recall to autonation toyota pinellas, fl with 37,800 miles on it..the car had been running perfectly prior to this.about 900 miles later, i heard a knocking and, at first, thought it had something to do with the serpentine belt.i then brought it to my local mechanic (since i live over an hour away from where the recall was performed) and he said my engine was blown due to rod bearing, connecting rods and main bearings. He said it looked like metal or something was carried through the engine via the oil.i then took it to my local subaru dealer (since it has a subaru boxer engine) and they said the exact, same thing.i have been without a car for three months, spent a fortune on rentals until i ran out of money and lost my $50,000/year job over it as a property manager because i needed a car to function. I no longer have the option of buying another car because i've lost my job and it's pretty hard to get another one without a vehicle.if toyota does not step up to the plate, offer me a loaner vehicle, and fix this car, i will be seeking litigation on this issue. I have already hired a lawyer but, i was hoping toyota would do the right thing.
Received safety recall notice from toyota, to bring my car to any toyota dealership service center.the recall is for engine valve spring replacement.nhtsa recall no. 18v-772dealership performs work.vehicle dies while commuting to work about 1,000 miles after recall work performed. Vehicle towed back to toyota of santa cruz.juan and mike relate to me that they will troubleshoot and, if they deem that the problem is from the recall work, they will fix the car for free.several days later, they said the engine has a spun bearing on the #4 rod.they state that the failure is not due to the recall work they performed and offer me a used, low-mileage engine for $7.5k, or a new short-block for $8.5k.i told them that i do not feel that i should pay because my vehicle was in perfect running order before the service, and that my being broke down on a busy highway put my life in jeopardy.problem was escalated to toyota corporate, where i talked to beth (case nr. [xxx]).she later told me that toyota has determined that the problem was not due to the recall procedure.as of 02/28/2019 - there are 12 cases of customers, nation-wide, who have brought their 2012-2013 scion fr-s in for the recall service and have experienced the same catastrophic engine failure as i did.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I took my car in for j02 engine valve spring safety recall on jan 29th, 2019 at a toyota dealership.took them a couple days, but when they finished, they said the car was good as new and i could drive it normally.2 weeks of daily commute to work with no issues, then on feb 17, 2019, i was driving up highway 1 for a couple hours, as i came around a turn, i was going about 25mph, i tapped the brake to slow down as the road was sloping downhill with two hair pin turns up ahead.as soon as i hit the brake, i felt the rear wheels give way a little and the traction control light blink (i was going 25mph, no reason for traction control to engage). Thought it was a little weird, so i let off the brake, coasted downhill a little and then tried tapping the brakes again, the same thing happened. Thinking my brakes are having issues, i tried to slow down by shifting from 3rd to 2nd gear (manual transmission).when i engaged 2nd gear, i heard a pop and saw the hood of my car jump up as if something inside hit it and saw a little bit of smoke.since i just passed the first hairpin turn, i was looking ahead to safely park my vehicle to the side, but i felt my feet and legs were burning hot.when i looked down, i saw flames coming from the driver side tirewell through the window, it was at this point, i remembered i just filled up a full tank 20 miles back, so i used the brakes to completely stop the car in the middle of the highway - disregarding any warning lights and exited the car.the fire eventually spread and burned the entire car down.i had no cell reception where i was at, so i waited by the car untill the police and fire showed up.
Took our 2013 frs in for the j02 recall jan 2019. It took them several weeks to complete. Then soon after that, there was a strong burnt rubber smell from the front. Took it back in to have them locate the source. They couldn't identify where it's coming from and told me that it's likely some residual that will eventually burned out and they re-assured us not to worry. My son was in college so didn't drive the car much. The smell was diminishing so thought it's as they told me. Then son got a job but wasn't driving more than 20 miles one-way daily. Smell still lingered. Then this past memorial day weekend, he drove ~200 miles non-stop when the engine stalled in the middle of the interstate hwy. Thank goodness he was able to pull over to the shoulderhad it towed to closest toyota dealership.. Was told engine seized up and it will cost $14k to replace it!. Car only had about 36k miles. Called dealership that did the recall repairs, they told me i needed to have a full diagnostics done - $2k - they think it's due to lack of maintenance on our part even though we really took care of the car - changing oil regularly (~6k miles)called toyota hq - they requested the dealership crm to call me. No one called me for 2 weeks. Went into the dealership - instead of the crm, they had me talked to the service mgr - who told me i had to have engine diagnosed again. Told them it's obvious that either the recall didn't fixed the problem or their repair caused the problem. Don't have $2k just for diagnosticsi am quite disappointed that the dealership crm didn't want to talk to me about a problem that could have caused my son his life
Less than 1000 miles after bringing my car to toyota to have mandatory recall work perfomed invokving valve springs, my engine died. The engine has a spun bearing, likely due to oil starvation. I was driving along the highway, and when i stopped for fuel, i noticed a tick that soon became a knock. The car was bogging down on idle and almost stalled numerous times. I drove it to a toyota service center that happened to be less than 2 miles away.
After receiving my car after the recall was performed, 15 miles into driving it home my engine began to knock and slow down on the freeway. This safety recall put me at risk. The dealership stated that they will not compensate for the price of a new engine and tried to blame it on me, completely disregarding all of the other vehicles just like me after this recall. I purchased an engine on my own expense after that occurred, and that engine is bad. I cannot believe this toyota dealership isn't compensating like others did.
7,500 miles after completion of safety recall j02 the vehicle began making a loud knocking noise and shut off unexpectedly while in the fast lane on 285w in atlanta.no check engine light or warning was given prior to shut off.the dealership has investigated and determined that the #4 rod bearing is destroyed.i have kept up with all recommended maintenance and had no issues with the car prior to the recall.the car has roughly 90,000 miles and was running well before the recall and had been well taken care of.this recall has caused issues in numerous other fr-s and brzs, most of which have resulted in a destroyed rod bearing due to rtv sealant blocking oil channels.dealership is denying responsibility but has not identified the cause of the failure.
Replace engine valve springs recall post safety/engine failure. Engine fails after being taken into the dealership for recall.on 02/18/2019 i took my safe, engine adequatley functioning 2013 scion frs into john elway's toyota for a recall.it was for the replacement of valve springs.two days later my car starts makinga loud knocking noise. The check engine light turns on and my car is shacking while i am sitting in heavy traffic on the 91 feeway.. During the few times i did drive my vehicle i heard the same tapping/knocking noise so approximately on 03/14/2019 i took the car back to john elway toyota for further evaluation of my car.they ask to keep my car overnight since i could not point out the noise when i drove the mechanic around the block..finally on 04/10/2019 i took my car back to john elway;s toyota because the tapping/knocking noise had become a constant, consistent noise, very similar to the knocking noise that became louder when my vehicle was towed, also, the check engine light had come on.it was about two weeks before they told me they had could not find "anything wrong with the vechile but the tapping continues, so we called a guy from our torrance toyota headquarters to come take a look".i would like to inform you that this toyota specialists removed the engine for the third time to determine what was occurring with my vehicle. I called my toyota adviser for updates and he basically told me to start looking for a new car unless i "absolutely loved" my car because it looks like i needed a new engine.for two weeks i could not get an answer to what had actually occurred with my vehicle and my calls were no longer being taken by my toyota advisor jeff wade. Instead they were being directed to josh reese, service manager.
A toyota dealership performed the valve spring recall on my 2013 fr-s. They did not do the work properly and now the engine is knocking loud enough to be heard inside and outside of the car. As of the date i am filing this complaint, the dealer has had my car for a total of 100 days for this issue. I have not been provided an estimated return date by the dealer.they have tried to give me the car back on 4 separate occasions, stating that the work is finally performed properly, only for me to find out that the engine is still knocking, and unsafe for the road. So far, the dealer claims that the mechanic has replaced all the valve springs, installed many valve shims, replaced one exhaust valve, and replaced the short block, along with other components. Each time they have done each of these operations, they have removed and reinstalled the engine. Each time the engine is removed and reinstalled, is another opportunity for the mechanic to make a mistake and damage something else.on all 4 return attempts, they tried to convince me the knocking sounds were normal. I know this is not true, as i am an engineer, a mechanic, and i have become familiar with the sounds the car makes during the 75,000 miles i had driven the car. They also refuse to acknowledge that this is a known issue that many other dealerships are causing. I feel i have been very patient with the dealer, who has proven to be dishonest andincompetent, when it comes to this type of work. I have tried to get support from toyota corporate customer service, who tells me this is an issue between the dealer and me, not toyota corporate. They refuse to assist to resolve this issue with the dealer, nor will they acknowledge that this is a known issue that many other dealerships are causing. Anyone less assertive with the dealer than me, would surely be driving this unsafe vehicle on the road.
Rod bearing failure causing sudden slowdown. Failure was due to factory defect of having too much sealant in between internal engine parts, causing oil starvation.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was taken to valley hi toyota (14612 valley center dr, victorville, ca 92395, (760) 241-6484) and was repaired per the recall. While driving 35 mph, a knocking noise was heard underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the number three piston failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was taken to town and country toyota (9101 south blvd, charlotte, nc 28273, (704) 557-0586) where the valve springs were replaced. After the repairs, the vehicle jerked, lunged forward, and lost power. Also, there was an abnormal knocking noise coming from the engine and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case number was provided. The manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. While driving, a knocking noise was heard from the engine compartment. The vehicle stalled without warning. The contact coasted the vehicle over to the side of the road and powered off the engine. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to reinhardt toyota (located at 911 eastern blvd, montgomery, al 36117, (334) 272-7147) where it was diagnosed that metal shavings were inside the oil pan. The contact stated that the vehicle remained at the dealer for sixteen days and was not repaired. The contact also stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 16,000.
Driving to work, had a knock ataround 3500 rpms. Knock progressively worsened.i pushed in the clutch to coast off the freeway and the car died. Engine oil psi light momentarily illuminated. This happend within just a few thousand miles of having the valve spring recall performed. I will be towing the car to a toyota dealership after work
We have a 2013 scion and in feb had the valve spring recall repair, in june the car lost power driving down the hwy, started knocking.had it towed to toyota dealership. Looking on the internet and discovering this happening to many 2013 scion owners after the recall repair. At this time toyota will not acknowledge responsibility to help me, the reason they gave is: i have high miles, 100,072, so it is out of warranty, which has nothing to do with what is happening after the recall repair and i didn't have my maintenance through them so they say they are unaware of service on it.there needs to be a recall on the recall.this is not a coincidence.too many people having the same issue!!!they should have to cover the repair on these engine failures.
Brought in 2013 scion fr-s (automatic transmission) to toyota dealership for the j02 valve spring recall on may 07, 2019.i noticed my engine was running a little rougher than usual after the recall repair but chalked it up to my engine getting used to the new valves.last night (july 14, 2019) my engine begins to knock hard and sounds as if one of my rods have spun, before i know it, my engine stalls out in the middle of the highway at night and i almost collide into an exit median going over 50 mph.i have read the other horror stories with this exact same issue, please lets get this fixed before someone loses their life!*dt
Read that this scion frs 2013 has recall for enginevalve springs but not listed?this scion was reidentified as a toyota 86 for 2018 and it is listed.both of these vehicles are mfd. By subaru and are essentially identical!why is the scion frs not listed.it shouldn't be unlisted as a 'small mfr' please contact me asap.i'm original owner, so my id and contact info is a available to you.tia
I received a recall notice from toyota for 2013 scion fr-s. Bring the car to toyota of bowie.dealership conducted repair.subsequent complete engine failure.dealership replaced the motor with used crate motor from japan (70k miles).dealership conducts recall repair on the crate motor and installed delivers it to me.150 miles later engine breaks down.strong gasoline smell in car.fear for conflagration i pull over.dealership tows car to do the additional repair.how many times does the dealership get to fail to conduct the same repair?i am at my witts end and want my car returned to me repaired or to be made whole.what do i do?
I started my car and immediately hears a knocking noise and i as drive or stay idled and rev my engine a bit i can hear the knocking noise as well.
I drove my auto to a normal errand trip, there were no issues, warning lights, noises, nothing, next morning i get in start up and it's making a clicking noise within the motor, still no warning lights, all gages are reading normal, i set up an appointment with toyota service and they tell me my car needs a new engine, possibly bearings in crank shaft housing, this is something that doesn't happen , if it were it's with wear out of excess of 300,000 plus miles. My car has 84,000 miles i am the 1 and only owner, i have done all maintenance ( oil changes, tire rotation, etc) and recall thru toyota, i use only best gasoline, oil. The only recall was engine valve springs replacement. When taken in to toyota for estimate of this problem, they stated that to the engine- computer threw no codes, there were no warning emblems, or warning signs. Which in itself is faulty. I plan to repair my auto but strongly feel this was caused by a defect which should be considered a recall and should be at manufactures cost . As i am in replacement process i have no documents except for estimate. Thank you. Please help me.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. While driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and then to balise toyota of warwick (1400 post rd, warwick, ri 02888, (401) 352-5911) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was recently repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). The contact was concerned that the failure was due in part to the recall repair.the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000.
Engine started to rod knock when service to this car is always on time. Looking on the internet their is a ton of other owner with the same problem with very low miles in there cars.
My 2013 frs toyota scion engine failed during a trip in the highway after a toyota dealer performed a j02 recall. Engine start to failed with an engine noise; then engine stop at the highway.after 2,000 miles after recall performed. Engine broke two ties the engine steering wheel. The car never feel like before , sometime happened during the repair that the car start failing. The history of car was clean never failed with 40,000 mmiles without any failures. After that something happen with the recall. The vehiclu was running at 65 mh when the fail ocurred.it is a local car use enow with 44,000 miles. Without any failures before.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000(engine and engine cooling). The vehicle's previous owner took the vehicle to baxter toyota lincoln (8600 s 33rd st, lincoln, ne 68516, 531-739-5213) where the recall repair was serviced. After approximately 2,000 miles, while accelerating, the contact heard a loud knocking noise coming from the engine without warning. The contact drove the vehicle home. Due to the knocking noise, the contact had the vehicle towed back to the same dealer where he was given the option to replace a small block of the engine. The vehicle was repaired. The contact did not directly notify the manufacturer of the defect; however, a service manager at the dealer informed him that the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 106,190.
Toyota advised based on a freeze frame of data on the computer they were denying my warranty for an "over rev". The rev they are citing is 7300 rpm at 35 mph, which is under the factory set rev limiter and is also the correct rev for that speed in 1st gear on my 6 speed manual transmission. Further more i have evidence based on their freeze frame data that the data was not collected at the time of failure but at another point due to temperatures of the vehicle at the time of failure compared to the freeze frame data, as well as the run time stated on the freeze frame compared to how long i had driven the car that morning. Toyota has told me 4 times that the district parts and service manager has been the last one to deny the claim and has told me that to speak to him, i need to talk to dealer. The dealership has advised me that they cannot give his information out as he is a toyota representative and not a dealership one. Toyota cannot prove that the information used is actually related to my claim and is stone walling any attempt of me to review this information with the representative that denied the claim. Outside of toyota, the dealership cited exhaust modifications as a reason my warranty would no longer apply even though toyota did not cite that in their denial, nor can they prove an exhaust caused internal engine failure. Toyota has also refused to send me a written official denial letter. The vehicle was stationary at a red light at the time of failure.
Took my vehicle in for repairs and had the valve spring recall work done at the request of the service rep at the dealership ( rick hendrick toyota of fayetteville ). Came back the next day and drove my frs home without a problem. In the following days i noticed it was taking longer for the car to start, and was throwing the cel on a particularly hot day as well. I disregarded it and continued driving my car lightly around post. A few days later the difficulty starting was still there and eventually the car started emitting a loud knocking noise from the motor, i feared it was a dreaded rod knock which i knew could be disastrous for the motor internally. So i limped it home and had the vehicle towed to the dealership the next day on my dime to figure out what happened. This all happened over the course of 7-9 days after driving home from the recall work. That was over 5 weeks ago and i still haven't gotten a decisive answer as to what happened to my car and what might be the solution to said problem. The warranty company i used when i bought my car back in february ( vehicle was still under the 3000 mi, 3 month warranty mind you ) has been jerking both me and the dealer back and forth, and has stated they will only pay 2k for a new motor, which will surely be more than that, which makes me stuck with the rest of however much that repair may cost. Its unfortunate that its come to this, but over 70 other people have ran into similar problems after having recall work done, we deserve answers as to what happened to our cars.
One year after required j02 recall, i spun a rod bearing on cylinder 4. Car is well maintained and the oil level was full at time of failure. I was traveling at 70 miles per hour on the highway and the engine began to knock and died shortly after. Car stalled and would not restart, i had to coast to the shoulder and get towed. Toyota dealership that performed the recall is denying it had anything to do with the warranty and is requiring that i use an aftermarket warranty to get a used engine form another car.
My car was brought in for the recall for the faulty valve springs. After about a month and a half the engine began knocking. I took it back to the dealer and after looking at the engine they wanted records of regular vehicle maintenance. They wanted this to make sure maintenance was done because toyota corporate suggested to replace the whole engine . I change my own oil but keep track of the mileage and date i changed it and gave that to the dealership to send to toyota corporate. They denied the engine with no reasoning.
So i'll just to get straight to the point. I have a 2013 scion fr-s that literally this past monday i took in for the recall because it was required for me to get my registration. The day i took it in was july 26 2020 with 99630 miles. I received it yesterday at 5pm from the dealership as they told me that the vehicle was done and ready and that it was healthy. I drove it straight to my parents which wasn't too far and then later on around 8:30 i went home. Soon after i was planning on meeting a friend and after picking them up i heard a weird noise and my vehicle turned off and i tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't turn on. My vehicle only lasted exactly 50 miles on the odometer from when i picked it up. My odometer now reads 99680 on the dot. There is no way that i'm at fault because my vehicle was running perfect with no issues and then i leave it with toyota for 3 days and get it and immediately afterwards it turns off within only 5 1/2 hours of receiving my vehicle. I will update later when i receive word from toyota on the issue. Also to mention i have a code reader and had 17 codes that read everything involving from the knock sensor to the cam position sensors and the angle position sensors. All brand new codes due after my vehicle shut off. Also turns out there's history on the computer that i never had when i first had my scan tool.
Toyota dealership is not following recall procedure from toyota corp. And they refuse to disclose the technician's qualification/certifications.my car was dropped off at dealer for j02 recall, engine valve replacement. After the recall service, i received the car with multiple problems, exhaust leak, oil leak, engine knock. However, dealership is unable to diagnose the problems.sealant was applied to wrong spots on the engine, causing oil leaks or blockage which could result in rod knock. Exhaust gaskets and other gaskets were not replaced, although, the repair manual says to replace them. The recall service quality is not being double checked by another technician, however, service manual clearly states " at least one associate (someone other than the individual who performed the repair) to verify the repair quality of every vehicle prior to customer delivery".
Valve spring recall performed on this vehicle may 2019. Car ran good for around 5000 miles but february 2020 i started hearing a small knock while driving around 55 mph. Within 10miles the knock was very loud. Car was towed to dealership who diagnosed knock and a destroyed bearing either in crank or the piston rods. Oil pan was dropped and found metal shavings and chunks in the oil pan as well as silicone pieces. Silicone is used as gasket material during the recall process. I still had used oil from last first oil change after the recall at home, and filtered that out with a fine mesh filter. Significantly more silicone was found in that oil. Even with all the silicone in the oil, the dealerships are claiming zero fault of the engine failure. This silicone is causing hundreds of engines to fail, and toyota will only take responsibility if the customer calls and complains for months. The denver field tech specialist inspected my car and said the recall was done properly and again there was no fault of toyota. People with failed engines due to the recall do not give up. Make toyota take responsibility.if even one piece of this silicone makes it past the oil screen and filter, it has potential to catastrophically fail your engine as it did with mine. Before you even take your car to a dealership, be sure to call toyota corporate and open up a case. Corporate will likely be the only ones willing to work with you for engine replacement.
Had the recall j02 done on my 2013 scion frs at 37,739 miles on the car and 1,000 miles later the car has a motor that has a bad rod due to oil not getting through. I have never had problems with this car until after the motor was worked on by the toyota dealership. Now they wont fix it. Driving the vehicle and the car just shut off. It was making a knocking sound right before that happened.
About 6 months after the j02 recall work was done the engine died commuting in traffic while on the hwy traveling at 65 mph. Towed to dealership where they report a spun bearing due to oil starvation, yet the crankcase is full with oil (per their own inspection)with about 25% life before having to change oil. I suspect excess rtv from the recall work has clogged the pickup screen or an oil galley. Dealership denies that either of those 2 things are the case and won't fix vehicle, yet they cannot explain the "oil starvation"if the crankcase is full of oil and you quote oil starvation, then something somewhere is clogged. Yet they wont accept responsibvility despite this being a known issue at toyota. Please help!
Brought my car in for the j02 recall as mandated by california dmv. I expressed concerns over the recall repairs before work was done, due to the alarming number of dealership issues and this recall. The service agent assured me they understood the complexity of the repair and that the technicians were adequately trained. Pick up my car a week later, and have engine problems within 30 miles. Brought it back in and told them what they would find in the oil sumpbefore they opened it (metal shavings and silicone). I knew this because of all the other frs owner issues. Sure enough they find exactly that in the oil sump/pickup screen. Dealer claimed that was their previously and not from their work, but assured me the engine was running find with good oil pressure. I even asked what would happen if i had those problems again, i was told we will cross that bridge when we get there. So i drove it to work, and had engine failure before i even got into the parking lot. Had to pay for a tow truck to get it back to the dealership. They charged me a 1200 dollar deposit to even diagnose the problem only to later tell me that corporate toyota nor the dealership will be taking any responsibility. I was told i either can trade it in (minus the 3600 dollars for engine disassembly which i was forced into, did not sign anything). I wanted to take the car back and get it repaired else ware but was told i cannot have the vehicle back either. I am out thousands of dollars and my transportation to and from work with nothing i can do about it.
After taking care of engine valve spring recall. Drove my car for a while everything seemed normal and at random my check engine light came on, with sudden loss of power to vehicle. Got it running, as it shook and was making a weird knocking i took my car to dealership immediately to figure out this problem and they claimed my scion frs 2013 needs a new motor at a cost of $10,630.59 because my warranty is now expired and i had nothing to show to them that it had anything to do with the recall. When this was the only thing that could cause this to happen.
Its a takata recall. The car was making a screeching noise when i first bought it. At first i thought i had to do something with the brakes but then when i was driving it stalled on me and didn't want to work. The engine turned off on me many times when i would turn it on
Vehicle was in dealership (toyota of redlands, redlands ca) for the f02 valve spring recall. Upon recieving the vehicle back from the dealership the engine was ticking more than usual. 700 miles later it spun a bearing resulting in total engine failure. Car was towed back to dealership for inspection, they deemed it not their fault and wanted to stick a 8k-12k bill on me to move on with repairs.small amounts of sealant were found on pickup screen. Car ran flawlessly for 97k prior to recall work.
I received a recall notice from toyota for valve springs. I had the recall work done at my local toyota dealership (toyota of marin, california). Several weeks later, on my way to my regular mechanic to have the repair inspected (driving on a paved road on private property at sonoma raceway in sonoma, ca), i experienced a bang and knock in the engine. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw smoke. I looked forward and saw smoke and flames coming out of the hood. I pulled over and a fire crew helped put out the fire but not before the entire engine compartment was destroyed.i have been working with toyota. They inspected the car in april and i am awaiting their response. This was a life threatening experience. I was lucky to have it happen near a fire crew who could provide immediate help. I followed the recall directions and lost my vehicle. I would like help in dealing with toyota to resolve this issue. I have attached my letter to toyota and a picture. Thank you. -[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Before i took my car in for recall i made sure it was in tip top shape no leaks or noises of any kind, no issues whatsoever! post j02 valve spring recall car was returned with a 1/2' hole in exhaust manifold dealer says it was my fault although it happened while in their possession it was at that time the shop foreman decided not to address the engine squalling around 5k rpm and instructed me to fix the exhaust and drive it. 3k miles later i'm driving down the road 55mph normally the cars starts bogging down and less than a mile later starts knocking violently as i turn at an intersection the vehicle just dies leaving me quickly exiting the vehicle trying to push it out of the road with the help of passing motorist i finally succeeded after my car half in the intersection sat for 15 min blocking traffic and potentially causing accidents. Dealer wanted me to pay for investigation if they determined i was at fault. I decided not to let them continue and choose to have a private repair facility investigate what caused the failure. They determined that sealant had been sucked into the oil pickup tube clogging the screen essentially starving my engine of oil leading to catastrophic failure. This recall is the first and only time my vehicles engine has been worked on leading the private repair facility to determine the dealer at fault with a probable cause being carelessness removing old sealant from engine and timing cover. Currently being treated as a liar by dealer while providing the findings from private repair facility trying to get them to fix my car.
Valve springs recall: was getting off the freeway, and went to turn and realized my car shut off (all lights on), and wouldn't turn back on (lights disappeared) , but got it to start again after a couple of minutes, and died again, and happened 3 or 4 times and it was sputtering / shaking as if it was out of gas but my gage was a little above a quarter and pulled into a gas station 50 ft in front of me filled up and turned the car on, and above 2000 rpm's starts making a horrible noise. I had the recall done on it last month (valve springs) , while my car was there my vacuum pump went out and the technician only realized after putting the engine back in, and ended up taking the whole engine apart again and put back together and realized it was the vacuum pump, tried to send me on my way but ended up talking to a manager who ate the cost and off i went 3 or 4 days later due to getting the part, no issues since then until now. Went and did some research and come to find out over 40 other have had the same issue as i have after the recall and it turned out that toyota had used the wrong sealant of some sort and now my engine has thrown a rod, and they're making me pay for it! $5000-$7500 for their mistake!!! the dealership told me i have to replace the whole short block, or rebuild my entire engine. They sent out one of their gm's and he said they did everything right obviously not! i have a spreadsheet of 40 others that this has happened to as well as 4 different news articles regarding the same issues. I have spent over 8 hours on the phone with either toyota or the dealership itself. No help.https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133521https://www.thedrive.com/news/26848/scion-fr-s-subaru-brz-owners-say-valve-spring-recall-fix-is-destroying-their-engineshttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sel4x84cy_ynrkcws9gnoiyntwljdotgqzu1j4rlzow/edit#gid=0
Took my car to the john elway crown toyota for the j02 recall. The dealership had examine the engined and stated that it was in good shape and able to go ahead with the recall. After the recall was done it went great; however less then two months my car stalled in the middle of the street at night time. I was almost hit because of this. I immediately took it to the dealership and they found metal shavings. This was informed to me yesterday. Now, the director josh does not take any responsibility into this and says it could have been "wear and tear." prior to doing my recall my advisor alexis gave me a call to let me know my engine was in great condition (just want to make that clear.) metal shavings should have been detected when draining the oil for the repair, if the problem was there before the recall like they try to explain to me. This is not the first case and many more scion frs owners face this exact same problem i am facing because of the recall and dealerships do not want to own up to it.
I had the j02 recall work completed at walser toyota in bloomington, mn in early february 2019.800 miles later, i note a ticking noise while exiting the freeway.the car stalled repeatedly as i limped the car to safety and had the car towed to the dealership.similar to dozens of other owners reporting issue with engine failure after the j02 recall on the ft86club.com message boards, my engine spun a bearing due to oil starvation.it is unknown if the engine failure is poor workmanship or a failure with the recall procedure/parts.
Engine seized while driving on a city street. Was driving to work, idling in the left turn lane waiting on aturn arrow, the engine coughed, and locked up.no warning lights, dashboard indicators, or (as found out later) no trouble codes.mechanic stated: engine has failed internally and locked up.oil was clean, coolant was low but sufficient. Further inspection: the spark plug (the sparking end, was crushed).the final determination was, initially, a valve spring failed and broke into 3 pieces, causing the catastrophic failure.we checked on the recall #d0u (this number was provided by toyota customer service, but i don't know if it is correct), but this vin number was not included into the recall.i believe that you may want to review this against this recall, as the motor was produced in the same place and time as the recall, and has the same failure.please see attached christian brothers automotive (cba) courtesy inspection and invoice. The engine is still at the mechanics shop at this point, if further inspection is requested, or required.note: i was unsure about uploaded docs, so have redacted some of the private information.thank you.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000(engine). Moments after retrieving the vehicle, the check engine indicator illuminated, a knocking noise was heard, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed back to the local dealer (sterling mccall fort bend toyota, 20465 sw freeway, richmond, tx) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to the replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 92,000. The consumer stated after having the vehicle repaired the vehicle continued to experience the failure immediately after leaving the dealer. The failure resulted in the engine coming totally apart under the hood. The dealersent a technician to inspect the vehicle and advised that the failure was a consequence of the having the recall completed. The dealer refused to assume responsibility for the failure and would not assist with the cost of repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance.
12/2019 i received a recall for the valve spring replacement on my 2013 frs. I took it to the dealership for the recall repairs (12/20/2019 - 1/10/2020) upon picking it up from dealership after recall repairs it was making squealing noise i then immediately returned to the dealership who aggressively denied all responsibility. Engine stalled while driving on the hwy. And now it will not start. Note: all of the electrical is still working, battery and alternator are good.
I had the j02 recall performed on from february 8th-13th.1200 miles after j02 recall car runs sluggish going up canyon. Stop car and engine is misfiring. Turn around and coast downhill in neutral until check engine light turns on then stop and park car for several hours. Called dealer and asked what i should do. Coast out of the canyon with the engine off. Turn engine on after several miles and no more problems. Drive home carefully. Next day throws several codes and running sluggish. Several days later codes are gone right before it goes to dealer. They can't diagnose if car has no active codes or symptoms. About a week later turn car on and car is making a knocking sound and has several pending codes. Carefully drive home. Codes didn't save. Finally able to take to dealer around june 25th while car is making the knocking noise but no codes and they think it's a lifter but not sure. I left the car and they say they can't replicate the issue. Literally the same day i pick the car up it is knocking and consistently does so for the next week as soon as the engine warms up.july 5engine sounds like it's being hit by a hammer and throws p0011 cam timing advanced. Oil pressure is 5psi at idle and 40psi at 5000rpm. Have car towed to dealer because it probably wouldn't make the drive and they say it is piston slap without even opening the engine they determine it is not caused by the recall. At this point the engine is sitting in my garage with the timing cover, oil pan and one valve cover off and i don't know what to do with it. I can't afford to pay them to fix something that is happening to dozens of people after the recall. Codes thrown so far are p0011 p219a p0301 p000a p0420 knocking seems to be when oil warms up and oil pressure drops to about 30psi and below.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine and traction control warning indicators illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over and had it towed to kendall toyota of eugene (373 goodpasture island rd, eugene, or 97401, (541) 228-9004) where it was diagnosed that metal fragments were inside the oil pan. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 57,000.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v772000 (engine and engine cooling). The vehicle was taken to toyota of redlands (921 new york st, redlands, ca 92374, (866) 611-5911) to be repaired. After driving the vehicle for 80 miles the engine ceased without warning. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact was informed to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 169,000.
This is a complaint on a 2013 frs that was bought in november of 2013 which now has 8500 miles on it now. Check engine light came on in the morning when i started the engine up to go to work. I use my check engine scanner and it gave me a p2404 code.drove it for two days to see if it would shut off. Now for some reason my gas is getting burned up really fast. My gas meter drop 1/4tank on a two day 15 mile drive. Cruise control also stop working too. So much for a new car.
I am filing a complaint before problems persist and make things worse. My brand new scion frs, what i was reassured by my dealer was reliable dependable make and model. Given the trust he had gained prior to the sale i believed every word he said down to his over market asking price pitch. I bought it all and the car. A few weeks later i notice a chirpping that i thought to be the belt. It had been raining constantly so i assumed the belt was moist and at times with condensation. In dry conditions the problem persisted and i became concerned, so i took it to the service center i purchased the vehicle. The tech said it was a miss sized fuel hose, causing the fuel pump to chirp. But what was weird and drew a red flag was all the parts that had to be replaced: fuel pump, pipe fuel delivery no2, gasket, gasket intake manifold, gasket throttled. Tsed suspicion so i researched my problem. A lot of the reportsfind the same issuse, along with others things i have noticed with my car. The fuel has been reported to leak, causing fires or enginge damage and acceleration issues leading to such. I have to noticed the need for accessive force on the pedal has been more and more necessary. Also stalling and rough idling is a big concern. I have only had the car for a month now and i do no wish to leave anything to chance especially if it may result in death. I don't want my girl friend and her two children and i to burn to death or stall out and crushed by a truck.
Multiple reports of fueling issues among frs and subaru brz owners . Filling station pump haults when fueling due to filler hose crimp; presents increased probability of hazardous condition due to requirement of manual pump override. Vehicle is overfilled, and gasoline may spray on to operator. Such has occurred in my instance
Gasoline overflows when fueling
High pressure fuel pump started making significant amounts of noise, was deemed defective by toyota and replaced. 3000 miles later, the same noise is back, and now toyota is refusing to repair / replace the part, even though car has less than 12000 miles on it, even now.this high pressure fuel pump is of concern because it's the system that compresses the fuel to over 3000 psi. This system never depressurizes, even while the vehicle is shut off. A defective high pressure fuel pump, one that makes significant amounts of noise, have the possibility for failure, and could cause either hesitation while driving, complete loss of power while under acceleration, or potentially a fire.toyota is aware of this problem, released a technical service bulletin with regards to an initial fix, and then completely refuses to fix the problem or even acknowledge it after the first fix attempt.
This is basically why i am concerned: i found that if you go to lock/unlock your car with a toyota/scion smart key while someone within range of your car holds the lock/unlock button on their toyota/scion smart key, your car will not respond to your own key. Their signal basically just interferes with your signal causing the car to do nothing. If you walk away w/o noticing, your car will be completely defenseless. No lock. No alarm. In my test, i held my key button about 60 feet away from my dads car and it interfered with his key causing his car not to lock. This also worked vice-versa. This means thieves have the ability to stake out a parking lot, for example, and, just by holding a button on their key, will be able to gain access to the cars of unsuspecting civilians. This is a flaw that should be addressed.
This is intended to report a problem, not a one-time incident. The shift knob of my fr-s is loose enough to rotate while shifting gears. I have read several other reports of this issue on online forums dedicated to this vehicle. I am concerned that it could potentially cause an accident due to partial misallocation of force from the operator's intended shifting direction into unwanted rotation of the gear knob. Missing a gear, or delaying or confusing the action mechanically can be a hazard. For example, it can be critical to make a fast and correct gear shift while merging into a traffic stream or while making a left turn against opposing traffic. The looseness of the shift knob, which in this case can rotate 5-15 degrees during a shift adds an unwanted and entirely unnecessary variable during operation of the vehicle.scion/toyota's response is that the rotational movement is "normal".a point with which i think no self-respecting automotive engineer would concur. Note: proper shifting technique does not require significant rotating force to be applied to the shift knob. Nevertheless it is inevitable that some differential force be applied to one side of the knob while shifting through the gear pattern.therefore the knob should be designed to resist those forces in order to direct the thrust in the direction intended by the operator.it should also be noted that the design of the fr-s shift knob and integrated cap discourages tightening of the shift knob on its threads as that will cause the cap to lift out of the body of the shift knob.
On february 6, 2019 i was pulling up to a traffic light on a city street at approximately 40 mph in heavy traffic and my clutch pedal stuck to the floor.the engine stalled and would restart, but i could not move the car either in forward or reverse.the vehicle has approximately 72,000 miles of mostly highway driving. I had the vehicle towed to my house and contacted a local toyota dealer's service department and they confirmed an open safety recall existed (18v-772) that could cause the engine to stall.they called back after receiving the vehicle in their service department and and indicated that they could do the recall repair, but that my clutch release bearing had failed causing the engine to stall and since the vehicle's warranty has expired, i would have to pay for the replacement of the clutch and associated parts as well as towing and the rental car.they also indicated that the transmission might need replacement due to potential damage that the clutch failure caused.subsequently, i found a tsb (s-sb-0012-17 dated 4/10/17) indicating that toyota knew that the clutch release bearing design was bad and instructing dealers to replace it with an updated version.no recall of this defect was noted.toyota knew a safety defect existed which would cause the engine to stall and the car to be undriveable, but chose to hide the problem from a recall.
My direct injector collar ended up damaged/missing completely, originally resulting in a violent "firecracker" popping sound under moderate throttle acceleration, due to the ecu with faulty programming. This is the 2nd time within a month of this happening to both direct injectors. This issue is causing fuel to leak/misfire from the injector causing the vehicle to run extremely lean, which can lead to accelerated engine ware and (worst case scenario) engine detonation and has happened to another person already.
The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle loss motive power and stalled without warning. The contact coasted the vehicle off the highway and drove home at a very slow speed. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to expressway toyota (700 morrissey blvd, boston, ma 02122) where an estimate for the diagnostic test was provided. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 50,720.

I had the j02 valve spring recall done and 2 weeks and roughly 80 miles later my engune developed a knocking noise and started losing power the dealership that performed the recall denied responsibility even after finding fipg sealent in my oil pickup
I had recall for the valve spring done on my car about 4-6 k miles and the engine while driving home on a highway at 60 mph and the engine started making a knocking noise. I drove to dealer ship 6/13/19 as i writing this and the noise has gotten louder sense i have arrived.
Clutch broke in half.
Electronic power steering makes a rattling noise which with time i believe it's going to lock up while driving

I noticed my clutch would not shift into gear smoothly anymore and i baby my clutch all the time. One day when i was driving home i smelled something burning and then my car would not go even though it was in gear. I managed to get my car to drive again and it was fine. The next day i went to leave my house and i got around the corner and my car would not come out of first gear and would not go over 5 mph. I towed it to the dealership and theanual transmission bearing screw broke and made my transmission seize up with less than 50,000 miles.for them to do the work it costed 1500. I have taken my car in for the clutch not shifting right before and they said nothing was wrong. I know a couple people with the same car and they have had the same problem so i looked into 2013 scion fr-s manual transmission problems and i have found that the transmission has this problem with a lot of the vehicle. My car was in motion when it finally gave out on me i was driving down the city street and then my car just stopped moving and i had to pushit back to my house. I was in the middle of the street when it happened i was pulling up to a red light so o was slowing down and then i couldn't move again. I asked if they have a recall on it and they said no so i asked the dealership if there is a way for them to replace the theowout bearing since it was a screw that broke and caused it to seize the transmission and they said not even though they knew that the car has the problem with it.

The contact owns a 2013 scion fr-s. The contact stated the front drivers side seat belt cannot be adjusted and it was rubbing across his neck. The manufacturer stated that was how the vehicle was designed. The contact stated he was six feet tall and that affected anyone six feet or taller vs. Someone who was shorter than him. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 40 and the current mileage was 215.
After leaving a residence, getting onto the freeway with no issues for about 1/4 mile, suddenly upon getting about to 50 mph, i felt a shimmy. I thought i had a flat tire. But i was smelling a burning smell pretty quickly. I thought it was from a polluted semi truck. But it got stronger.so, i decided to take the first exit another 1/4 mile up. I turned on hazards and slowed to 40 and exited. Upon stopping i turned off the car and inspected first the engine, seeing no smoke around it. I then inspected the tires. All good. So i opted for a touch test for overheated tire, to see if they were hot. Which given i only drove maybe 1.5 miles total, or 2, this seemed unlikely.when leaning to touch the left rear tire, i saw a flame come out from behind it, and immediately got away from the car and called 911 for fire department. They arrived and determined that luckily the fire had extinguished itself.upon mechanical inspection, i learned the caliper froze so the brake pad had ignited.while i was driving. A live flame under my car, i am lucky nothing happened.i am terrified of this happening again and what if its in the front tire near the engine?
On june 28th i was driving to work on a rainy day. While taking a curve the car lost traction cause the traction light to come on as well as the abs light. A few minutes down the road the car started braking without me even pressing down on the break.
My 2013 scion frs currently have 18k miles and randomly losing power to steering wheel when driving. This has happened four times already and two to those was almost an accident.it happened twice when i was turning, once when i was driving straight, and once when i was idling.power steering indicator lights will come on and 1-2 seconds after that, you would lose power.shutting the vehicle off and on will make it temporary go away.checked many forums and it seems to be a common problem but has no recall in the us.but there is one in australia in 2016.
During normal driving of the vehicle, there has been random loss of power steering on the car. A light appears on the dash and a short warning signal sounds. Manual steering takes over on the car. Loss of power steering occurred during normal driving at random times and has occurred with increasing frequency, as much as 5 times an hour, making the car unsafe to operate. The cut out appears to be completely random as it happened on both side streets main roads, after the engine was warmed up, and both in motion and stationary. It has occurred approximately 12-15 times over the past five months with increasing frequency. The manual steering remains engaged until the car is turned off and on again, although when the power steering cuts out again after restarting is random, it happened both immediately, several minutes after, 30 minutes after, and not at all.
Power steering randomly shuts off while driving, has happened while stationary, while driving at low speeds, while turning, has happened on 3 separate occasions under normal driving. Shutting off and restarting the car has resolved the issue on 2 previous occasions but today the same issue continues to occur even after the car has been restarted. This is a hazard which should be looked into and recalled. Various forums present many other owners of this vehicle have experienced this issue .
This is intended to report a problem, not a one-time incident. The shift knob of my fr-s is loose enough to rotate while shifting gears. The first time my tire and rim was destroyed it wassome time in february2013,while driving on the intestate .i was not driving fast as a matter of fact i was going below the speed limit, because if i was going fast my car would flip and who knows how would it ends. Anyway i heard a thud in my from tire and it immediately stated to wobble before i could stop. I eventually stop and was surprise to see the rim split in the seam and the tire total. The second time i havethe same problemwas june 21,2014,i was on the interstate again and fell my car wobbling again ,this time it was my rear tire ,and was surprise again to see theright rear tire split all around in the seam again . My conclusion is that these tires are defective and toyota should replace all four. For now my scion is park, because i do not know how to handle this problem. I will have to replace all four tires with a different brand. The types of tires come with my scion is michelin primacy hp tires and i can attest that they are not safe to used on a car. I can provide pictures of the tires.
I'll be driving and rpm will dip so fast sometime cars dies but happens every now and then. Sometimes in start up and or just just a stop light
Electronic power steering makes a rattling noise which with time i believe it's going to lock up while driving
Its a takata recall. The car was making a screeching noise when i first bought it. At first i thought i had to do something with the brakes but then when i was driving it stalled on me and didn't want to work. The engine turned off on me many times when i would turn it on
I started my car and immediately hears a knocking noise and i as drive or stay idled and rev my engine a bit i can hear the knocking noise as well.
When attempting to pump gas, the intake line backs up and triggers the security switch on the gas pump. I was told this is an issue with the charcoal canister. Upon review of some forum posts, it seems like this is a very common issue on the early 2013 fr-s's. Toyota needs to accept accountability for this. The dealership is trying to charge me over $1,700 to fix the issue.
Cpsc: i13b0068a. 2013 scion. Consumer stated while driving in cruise control it failed causing him to use his emergency brakes. *lnthe consumer stated when he hit the brake, to deactivate the cruise control, it did not release.
Every time the tires need to be fix, one or more of thethe lug nuts and the studs break while trying to take them out. This problem has happened 3 times, having to replace 7 lugs and studs in all 4 tires. It is dangerous to drive a vehicle with fewer lugs than the ones recommended by nhtsa.
The bolts and studs have continually gone bad on my car.i've already had to replace all the bolts and almost 10 of the studs. The car has never been in a major accident nor had any damage to the wheels before.no one can figure out why this keeps happening, but i can't even change my tires without a bolt breaking.very dangerous!
