While drivingat highway speed, consumer lost control and couldn't steer the vehicle.passenger'sir bag deployed.dealer and manufacturer notified.

My car has a lot of problems. The steering system has been replaced 2 times. The climate blower motor has been replaced 2 times. It has broken down 2 times. This car is a lemon and gm will do nothing to help with any problems i have.. They just give me the run around. And my windshield wiper system has been replaced 1 time.. Which still never corrected the problem.. The speed of the wipers when on high are slower then most cars resulting in poor vision. The air bags never went off when i got in to a head on collision at 45 mph.. This has to be the worst car out there.

Driving on highway rt. 80, when a car swerved into right lane in front of me from entrance ramp. I was traveling at approx. 45 miles an hour.airbags failed to deploy in a front end collision, causing life altering injury. Left temporal brain damage, post concussion syndrome and epilepsy, also other injuries to neck, shoulder and to lower back.

We have a saturn sl1that has the exact same problem that the cars on the ignition recall list have.the key comes out in any position - the wheel locks up and we can't get it to unlock - we live in a rural area and our roads are very rough.we feel that the key may move from the run position while we are driving the car and the engine will turn off and we will be in great danger.we have contacted gm and they said that since the car is not on the recall list - there is nothing they can do....we would appreciate it if you could investigate this situation.our car has been sitting in our driveway for 3 months, because we are afraid to drive it.thank you for your time -- awaiting your earliest response. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Vehicle was in a high speed frontal collision but none of the air bags deployed upon impact.

Vehicle was involved in a six car rear end collision and neither air bag deployed. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

After a crash in a saturn and the air bags exploded.the passenger side of the dashboard area started smoldering. The fire department arrived and put the fire out before it did a lot of damage.

The contact owns a 2002 saturn sl. The contact stated that the key was unable to be removed from the ignition. The contact also stated that the key was able to be removed while the vehicle was being operated. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 72,000. Updated 5/27/14updated 06/02/2014

I own a 2002 saturn sl vehicle purchased in 7/2016. I'm having problems starting my vehicle. Both starter and battery have both been checked out ok. All spark plugs were replaced on 10/31/18. After these repairs, when started it still made very noisy sounds coming from the engine. Now i can't get it to start at all. I tried to get help about a recall relating to my vehicle's starting problems. I contacted saturn company 1(800)533-6000 and gm recall center 1(866)694-6546. Neither were willing to help. I found info on the kelley blue book website. I entered my vin number and following was displayed: nhtsa campaign id: 03v231; report date: info unavailable; vehicles affected: 239,993; consequence: info unavailable; what you should do: dealers will (1) replace the ignition control module, (2) replace the ignition control module and spark plugs, or (3) replace the ignition control module, spark plugs, and update the powertrain control module. When parts become available, owners will be advised to contact their dealers for appointments to have their vehicle repaired. Parts should be available during september 2003. Summary: on certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.2l l4 (l61) engines, a failure of the ignition control module may cause deterioration in idle quality, reduction in overall engine power, and the vehicle may be hard to start. Continued operation of the vehicle after such an ignition module failure will result in the "service engine soon" light flashing, and may lead to secondary failures of the catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, and exhaust resonator. Failure of the resonator will cause increased exhaust noise. Prolonged operation of the vehicle following a resonator failure may lead to a fire. **can you please help me with finding out if this recall effected my vehicle?

The gm ignition problems prompting the current recall also affected the car above.i bought the 2002 saturn new in march of 2003, and owned it for over 10 years, selling it last fall to a friend.i had it at the jake sweeney (cincinnati) dealership several times for strange "electrical" problems.(car did not have auto door locks or windows - everything was manual). I would be driving, when all the dash gauges would go out.it would register no speed, no temp, no gas, no rpms.odometer didn't move.i could drive the car, stop and start.then suddenly it would "come to".the dealership thought i was nuts, until finally in early 2013, i was able to get it to the dealership while it was doing it.after days of diagnostics, they said it was the ignition.they replaced the whole thing (at my expense) and the problem was solved.they said "were you aware that you could take the key out while the car was in drive?"(i had not been aware).

Ignition cylinder is wore out, when putting in the key, you have to jiggle the key, sometimes takes up to 10 minutes for the key to turn and start. Sometimes it works fine. This is an off and on problem. This month (sept 2017) it has been real bad. I am afraid to go anywhere, fearing i will be stranded.

Ignition requires key jiggle in order to start. Electrical issues such as constant shorts, major failure in supporting systems.

When i removed the keys from my car it kept running. They keys have only fallen out twice, but i have since removed all the extras from the key fob. But the car should not continue to run after it has been placed in park and the key removed from the ignition.i know it is an older car and currently has 135,000 miles on it. I have had diligent maintenance performed on it since i purchased it new in 2002. The problem occurred when it had 45,000 miles on it and should have been replaced by gm, but i was advised it was a costly expense for me. Gm should replace the ignition at their cost.

At my last service visit, the repair tech recommended the repair/replacement of: 1 ignition housing bolt -- he stated that without this repair, the car could suddenly "stop where it is and be unsteerable and/or undriveable". (lord help whoever's behind me on the freeway that day!) i've owned 5 vehicles -- manufactured by ford, chrysler, subaru and general motors -- nothing like this has ever happened before. It's also kind of scary to know that the only reason i'm aware of this problem is because i just happened to take my car in for an oil change! questions: if 2 little bolts are that important, shouldn't those areas, instead and/or in addition to, be soldered? is this type of breakage supposed to happen? am i driving "an accident waiting to happen"?

I have a saturn sl2 and everytime i try to start the car, the key gets stuck and i have to jiggle and push and shove and sit in the hot car for over 15 minutes in the summer heat to start the car. This is after i paid to have two new keys made thinking that would solve the problem. I did some research after being told i need a new ignition barrel and saw that many many many saturn vehicle owners go through the same thing... Why hasn't this issue been addressed by saturn??? we must we spend so much money on a faulty item? life and gas is so expensive to have to deal with a faulty car that this dealership keeps selling. Please help us!

Put my car in park and was able to pull the key out of the ignition.the car was still running...was able to put the car into gear and drive it.i do not know how long the car has been like this!

The key comes out of the ignition while running. There is also trouble turning the key in the ignition to start it. Similar to what can happen when the steering wheel locks, sometimes the key wont turn. This happens without the steering wheel locked and takes 20-30 tries before it finally turns over.

The contact owns a 2002 saturn sl.whenever the contact starts the vehicle, the ignition control module fails and the ignition will not start.she had new keys made, but this did not correct the issue.during the failure, the check engine indicator remains illuminated and will not dim.the failure has been occurring for over a year.the contact must wiggle the keys for at least fifteen to thirty minutes before the vehicle will start.the dealer has not been notified.the failure mileage was 120,000. Updated 3/19/09 the consumer also stated the engine idles very high. Over 4000 rpm/ updated 03/25/09.

The contact owns a 2002 saturn sl1.whenever the contact attempts to turn on the vehicle, the ignition will not turn to the start position.the contact stated that it takes 5-10 minutes of attempting to turn on the vehicle before the ignition would turn.the contact did not notice any differences in the vehicle prior to the failure.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current mileage was 103,787 and failure mileage was 87,000.

I have removed the key with the vehicle stopped and the car continues to run.the key falls out of the ignition switch.additionally, the key can be removed before being turned to the "off" position.this causes the key to be difficult to reinsert into the ignition.

Keys come out of ignition during use.

Dt:while trying to start the car with the key it will not turn the ignition to start the car. A recallwas issued on the same componentbut for a different model car. Dealer has fixed problem, butcaller has to pay for it. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.

The contact owns a 2002 saturn sl.the contact stated that the ignition locked and prevented the vehicle from being started.the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or mechanic.the manufacturer was notified.the failure mileage was unknown.

My sonhad an accident involving 3 other vehicles.the motor of the 2002 saturn sl1 in which he was driving stalled as he exited the highway onto a service road.once the engine stalled,he did not have the ability to steer or stop the vehicle.as a result, he struck 2 vehicles that were stopped at a red light causing a chain reaction. The second vehicle that he struck hit the vehicle in front of it. The airbags deployed in the vehicle my son drove. The right side of vehicle 1 sustained damage. The rear and front bumpers were damaged on vehicle 2. The rear of vehicle 3 is damaged. The saturn in which my son was driving had front bumper damage, hood crumpled, airbag deployment, left rear view mirror separated from the car, left head light and brackets destroyed, and damage along the left front quarter panel. My son received a superficial cut in which the emergency paramedics bandaged while on site.the saturn was towed to saturn of arlington for diagnostic tests. The technician explained that the computer contains vehicle systems information that occured immediately prior to the collision, however he did not have the capability to extract the information.

While driving vehicle exhibits ticking noise and then stalled.consumer attempted to restart vehcle as it died out again.dealer replaced main module computer (ecm) engine control moduel.

Ignition switch fails causes steering wheel to lock and or unable to turn on car.

Ignition switch-lock mechanism is bad. Mechanic states this has been an on- going problem. Replacing whole ignition system, progressively gotten worse since around 50,000 mile mark.problem occurs every time car is started.

Ignition switch is hard to impossible to turn on and once the car is running the key will turn to the off position and with the key extracted from the lock the engine continues to run.

While driving 55 mph, the vehicle caught on fire in the center of the dashboard.the dealer stated that the electrical wires were faulty.no injuries reported.*sc

Electrical wiring defect resulted in the 2002 saturn sl2 catching on fire. *mr (short in electrical system)the consumer requested that the general public should be made aware of this hazard and nhtsa should issue a recall. *sc 8jb

Vehicle caught on fire under the hood, near the battery, after having oil changed. Two parties have looked at the car and determined that the electrical system was faulty. The wiring near the battery was the affected area. The car was a loss with only 30000 miles on it. Saturn does not wantto honor factory warranty. Also, saturn found crack in the engine. They "believe" this crack could have caused the fire.no other inspector found this crack and i want to know how it got there. Saturn had no answers and were very nasty about my entire situation.

While going from a parked position to driving. The car shifted gears very hard to the point it rattled the whole car. I stopped driving and checked the engine and all fluid levels. Everything seemed fine. As i pulled off again it did the same thing each time the automatic transmission shifted gears, this time harder. The mechanic at worked tested the computer and it registered a problem with the egr valve and an unknown code. When i called a certified service center they said they have seen this a bunch of times and that it is a common problem. With this is a common problem, where is the recall to get it fixed.

Saturn is an l200 series/there was only the ls on your list.numerous occasions of engine stall while traveling at all speeds. Called saturn/said vin not accepted? live in florida keys/had to go to miami & get tail lamp fixed/only lasted two weeks (this was before engine stall) & call to saturn.am 69yr old female/afraid to use car/paid for all sorts of repairs/modules/sensors???and more. No one in keys to repair via gm - saturn said miami only. Roundtrip over 200 miles. Afraid to drive/can't afford another car/must junk and, ofcourse, saturn said vin # not under recall for engine or electrical. Is there any way to recoup dollars i paid for any repairs on this car??? so much more than i am listing here......thank you nhtsa.

Rpms go up to 5 and then drop to 0 - engine stalls and will start but will continue at high rpms and keep stalling.as i was traveling at 50 mph, the rpms went up to 5, and then quickly dropped to 0.the engine stalled and i coasted to the side of the road. The vehicle would start but when reaching 35 mph, would do same thing (high rpms and then drop and stall). I had tokeep sitting and re starting to get the remainder of 6 miles to my home.garage ran diagnostic and found nothing wrong.the car continues to do this at least 2 times per week, currently sitting in our garage because i am afraid to drive it and get stranded again.this occurs on city streets and highways.

At around 60k the saturn sl1 2002 showed a trouble code with the intake gasket leaking fuel mileage suffered.this car can not pass smog and now the car is consuming 1 qt of oil in 300 miles, as well as getting terrible gas mileage.no repairs have been made as i would think that since the net is littered with this problem on the sl1 1.9 it should be covered by saturn.if there is not a common failure with the intake gasket why has saturn made a upgraded gasket?? recall this pos!

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning vehicle shutdown.

Head gasket failure in a relatively young vehicle with 52,000 miles. Not covered under warranty and cost $600.00 to fix.

While the car was still under warrant, i took it to the dealer with a complaint that the engine would not accelerate well and described it as "sluggish".after checking it, it was determined that it was not the engine.when i kept noticing that the oil in the car was extremely low between oil changes, but it was not leaking out of the car nor was the car burning oil from the exhaust, i contacted the dealer via telephone and was told that they had just fixed a car with the same problem and the engine needed to be rebuilt to the tune of $1400.at this point, the car was out of warranty.i was advised that the oil was leaking into the engine itself.

2002 saturn sl has 3 leaking seals.very dangerous for a fire.rear seal, oil pan gasket and crank case gasket all leaking.dangerous for single women on the road.

The ignition cylinder lock on my saturn sl2 2002 will not budge. Doing an internet search it is evident that scores of people have had this problem with all models of saturns. Has there been a recall? if not how does one start that process.

I came to a complete stop at a stop sign, went to put it first (5speed) and the shifter bushing broke. The shifter was just flopping around.i could have been in serious situation if i was in the city or traveling.or picking up a senior customer.

Afraid to drive/can't afford another car/must junk and, ofcourse, saturn said vin # not under recall for engine or electrical. Is there any way to recoup dollars i paid for any repairs on this car??? so much more than i am listing here......thank you nhtsa.

Saturn sl1 was not shifting properly.took it in for repairs on monday, 6/23/03.supossedly computer was reprogrammed.four days later (06/27/03) transmission failed totaly.had to have car towed.whole transmission was replaced but i do not feel safe driving it.

Automatic transmission. Driving on straightaway ~ 20-30 mph. Banging into gear as shifts. Harder bang when going into "r". Brought to dealership immediately. Problem: faulty solenoid. Replaced valve body. Expensive repair! this is a very premature, failure. Car only 3 years with ~50k.

Automatic transmission not able to shift into low gear while descending steep grade/mountain roads.brakes are scorched due to excessive pedal application, and controlling vehicle is with difficulty.please describe details.

When putting the gear shift in reverse vehicle would not move. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25 mph, a noise was heard and the vehicle stalled without warning.it was maneuvered off the road, and towed to the dealer.the dealership determined the transmission needed to be replaced.the gear went through the bottom of the transmission. Updated 01/10/07.

Transmission was defective, when shifting it down shifted and changed gears on its own.manufacturer to date has offered no assistance.

I have had trouble with this car since new delay and hard shifts into reverse always, and forward gears quite frequently had saturn service dept check and they show no codes.

At approx. 71,000 miles, automatic transmissionbegan exhibiting shifting difficulties between 2nd & 3rd gears.reputable transmission shop diagnosed problem as hydraulic leaks within transmission.replaced seals with trans. Rebuild, replaced mlps, total repair cost over $3650.trans. Was not abused, this was a premature trans. Failure.

Transmission failure on 2002 saturn sl mileage: 50+k only 2nd owner bought from used auto dealer. Covered on dealer warranty and fixed in 2005. Transmission failure again after warranty expiration- 2008.

The contact owns a 2002 saturn sl2.while driving between 20 and 40 mph mph, the vehicle became sluggish while the contact attempted to accelerate.he had to slow the vehicle down and gradually accelerate in order to switch gears.the contact spoke with the dealer and they accused him of not following the maintenance schedule.the current mileage was 33,323 and failure mileage was 33,175. Updated 04/04/08.*lj

I have a 2002 sl1 (auto transmission)with over 150,000 miles on it. The transmission had started clunking when engaged in reverse and also when shifting between other gears. I decided to have my transmission rebuilt. Ihave had my car at a transmission shop for over a month now. The mechanics replaced my valve box and still am having the same issues. My mechanics is at a loss right now. I have read alot of blogs on the internet about the saturn transmissions and believe i am not going to get my car fixed by my current mechanic nor anyone else.

One evening last week i noticed that when i would shift gears after being parked, it felt like something dropped under my car.the same night, i would be driving about 35-40 miles and hour in the 1-2 rpm range, all of a sudden the gauge would quickly jump to 3 rpms and then drop back down.it did this consistently every 2-3 minutes.i took my car to a local transmission shopthe next morning because i felt that it was a serious problem.the body valve was damaged which was the main problem.that was replaced along with a few other parts.when i was paying ($2895) the man that had been helping me informed me that his shop had encountered many transmission problems with my model car (2002 saturn sl1) and that they checked in to any kind of recall or bulletins.he said that he felt that gm would be issuing a bulletin relatively soon.i did my own research and found multiple complaints about saturn transmission problems, in particular the body valve.when my father originally purchased the new vehicle, he had complained about the shifting of the car and gone to the saturn dealership to complain a few times, and he was told, "oh, that's just the way car is."i feel that this car had a transmission problem in the beginning that was brushed under the rug, and has created a almost $3000 problem.

While driving at any speed vehicle jerk and vibrateduncontrollably. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to dealer for inspection numerous times. However, mechanic could not duplicate the problem.

Transmission pawl will not disengage if vehicle is parked onslightest incline even with emergency brake.this problem is becoming repetitious more frequently.vehicle must be left in neutral with hand brake engaged.please describe details.

Gear shift started smoking then caught on fire.*mr there was a recall for 2000-2003 saturns of the same model. The dealer stated they weren't responsible for the fire and wasn't going to pay for the damages. *ph *nlm

Car has been taken back to saturn for repairs 5 times and after the max of 2 days the problems were back.the car is not safe to drive and has been parked in my garage for now two years.saturn is not willing to buy the car back through the wisconsin lemon law and by an inspector and myself it is a pure lemon.the car vibrates, idles very rough, and has the curious tendency to stall, lose power while driving at any speed.the car does not know what first gear is, the back end tells you of any bump in the road.car has stalled several times when turning in a major intersection just love the sight of on coming cars and getting the finger and the horn. Not to mention the fear of going to the hospital for injuries, maybe not me, but maybe my passenger at the time in this car was 6, my daughter.

While driving consumer heard a loud noise.tookvehicle todealer, who determined that the gears broke and went through the transmission.manual transmission was replaced.

Vehicle was involved in a six car rear end collision.driver's side seat belt came unlatched ,anddriver sustained injuries.dealer was notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

I purchased a 4-door saturn sl 2002 this past summer. The cars design is incorrect. When i sit in the seat with both of my hands on the steering wheel and drive, i have to turn my body from the waist down to the left in order to press on the gas or brake. I have no room on the right side next to the gas pedal due to the center console panel, it forces me to sit with my waist turned to the left. This is an extremely uncomfortable position and i have had continual back pain, which began two months after purchasing the car. I have been seeing a chiropractor for the past 4 months. I spoke to the dealer whom i purchased the car from, and was given a letter stating the seat was positioned correctly and there was nothing they could do. I believe i will have long term back pain if i continue to drive this car. As it is a new car and i would loose $8000 or $9000 if i were to sell it immediately, i find it very difficult to do so.

Dt*: the contact stated that two wires at the back of the driver side seat werepoking out through the upholstery and someone could be injured. It was not safe for the driver and passenger as well. The dealer offered to pay forpartial repair but the contact expressed dissatisfaction with with the seat because there was faulty on workmanship.

Upon rear impact, the driver's seat immediately fell backward to a total reclining position.the driver was forced backward, into a reclining position, unable to see through the windshield to navigate the car.the seat is not broken.when the lever was pressed, the seat returned to it's normal upright position.

The vehicle was stopped, was involved in a 3 car collision.the vehicle was hit from behind by a 1985 cadillac fleetwood traveling at at least a moderate rate of speed. The vehicle was pushed into a 2002 audi (i believe it was) suv. During the collision the drivers seat back failed and collapsed into the back seat. I believe it was the seat adjuster that failed. The driver sustained a concussion due to the collision and the seat failure. The vehicle was on a state road, and was stationary.

Consumer notice the vehicle doesn'tcomplies with all applicable u.s federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvvss). "latch" ts

Dt*: the contact stated the two front seats failed when the vehicle was in an accident, and both the driver and the passenger reclined.the vehicle was deemed totaled and the insurance company determined the front seat recliner was a manufacturer defect.both the driver and the passenger were injured as a result.

While driving 15 mph the vehicle was involved a rear end collision. Upon impact the driver seat collapsed without warning. The driver sustained neck and back injuries. Please provide any additional information. *nlm

After leaving a traffic light, i had to stop suddenly because the car in front of me stopped for a stalled car in the lane of traffic we were traveling.the car behind me also stopped.the car behind this car collided with the car behind me causing it to collide with my car which was then pushed into the car in front of me.my car was sandwiched between the cars involved in the accident.the hinges of the driver's seat gave way causing the seat to move to the reclining position.i was not injured but the seat could not be placed in driving position.this kind of action could lead to serious injury and should be investigated.

Upon sitting at a stop light consumer's vehiclewas rear-ended. The driver's side seat back reclined completely. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy.

I recently purchased my saturn and replaced the brake pads and rotors it was fine then after 200 miles the brakes started grinding then would stop. Checked the calipers they were fine had to replace the rotors again due to the grinding brakes were fine. 2 weeks later same thing then stopped it starts and stops grinding when it wants.

While driving the brake pedal will go down to the floor intermittently, causing the consumer to pull over. Ts

The brake pedal travelled to the floor board. The owner took the vehicle to the dealer and had the dealer inspect the vehicle. The service manager stated after the vehicle was evaluated they could not find any defects in the brakes. However, they did have to add fluid to the brakes. Later they contacted the owners spouse and said the vehicles brake response was normal for this type vehicle.provide further details.

Automatic transmission not able to shift into low gear while descending steep grade/mountain roads.brakes are scorched due to excessive pedal application, and controlling vehicle is with difficulty.please describe details.

Steering wheel shakes when braking, especially at higher speeds.the dealer reports this is due to warped rotors due to "external forces" and not a warranty problem.the car has 30,000 miles and less than 2 years old. Driven mostly highway to and from work, 35 miles one way each day.seems more like a defective part or engineering.

Consumer complained about front brake rotors. Front brake rotors werereplaced on two separate occasions, but the problem recurred.

Vehicle rotors are warped.*mr the consumer stated the rotors warped so bad in 10,000 miles that the vehicle shook and vibrated.when maneuvering around a curve the vehicle was difficult to control.*ph

While applying the brake pedal brakes failed. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over.vehicle was taken todealer for inspection, and mechanic determined thatrotors needed to be replaced, and replaced them four times. However, the problem recurred.

Vehicle experienced brake failure.*mrwhile driving the consumer brake pedal went all the way down to the floor, as she was attempting to stop the vehicle at a traffic signal. It had resulted in a collision with the vehicle in front of her. About $600 worthof damagesoccurred not including the cause of repairs for the consumers vehicle.

Spouse and i use car.the very first time the occurrence happened, was when parking car into driveway, i went to turn off car ignition and accidentally hit key ring, and the key fell out of the ignition, with the car in park, yet still running.on numerous occasions, while driving the car, the car is still running and the key easily slips out of the ignition.also, on more than one occasion, when trying to unlock the steering wheel, the key will not turn while in the steering ignition.we would have to move the steering wheel many times while simultaneously turning the key many times to unlock the ignition.one day soon, it might not turn.yes, we know the advise is to use only a single key, not one on a multi-key ring.however, we both have used other cars for many years, and never had such difficulty or frequency of problems as this situation.

While drivingat highway speed, consumer lost control and couldn't steer the vehicle.passenger'sir bag deployed.dealer and manufacturer notified.

The contact owns a 2002 saturn sl. While coming out of a left turn at an unknown speed, the power steering failed. The steering wheel seized and excessive force was required to steer the vehicle. The failure caused the contact to drive into a ditch, over a levee, and crash into a pipe. Once the vehicle came to a stop, the contact noticed the ignition key was on the floor. The air bags deployed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 114,000.

My car has a lot of problems. The steering system has been replaced 2 times. The climate blower motor has been replaced 2 times. It has broken down 2 times.
