There was a consistent problem with the "check air bag light" on the vehicle.the dealer wanted $66.50an hour to find the problem.

Our 99 saturn sl2 sedan was involved in a 3 car accident. The saturn was first rear ended by another vehicle first at about 45 mph, then slammed into a car in front of our car which was stopped. The seat back broke (to the recline position). Further the air bags did not deploy. Luckily the seat belts were being worn at the time of the accident, and no injuries occurred.

When the consumer applied the brakes, the pedal went to the floor.the consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle and hit a car head on.both frontal air bags did not deploy.the consumer seeked medical attention the next day.the vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company.please fill in additional information.

No,summary listed for abov evehicle.

While driving down the road the air bags spontaneously deployed.no known cause- possibly bad sensors.it broke my thumb and burned my arm.

The contact owns a 1999 saturn sl. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the brakes were applied to prevent from crashing into another vehicle that had disobeyed the stop sign. As a result, the vehicle slid and crashed into another vehicle and rolled into a snow embankment. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact driver sustained head injuries and the three passengers sustained minor injuries, which required medical attention. In addition, the key could be removed from the ignition when driving. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

I was involved in a rear end collision to my 1999 sl1 saturn sedan that caused the rear seat to collapse so that i was prone after the accident and neither air bag deployed (driver or passenger).

The safety mandated air bag label on the head rest of the child car seat was pulled off while by my 10 month old child while she was rear facing and we were driving.i noticed she was choking and looked back to see she was blue and not breathing.i was able to dislodge most of the label from her airway and she began breathing on her own.this is a significant safety issue and these seats should be recalled.had my child passed out, i would have assumed she was sleeping and we would be burying our daughter.dt

Seam where air bag deployed from steering column has developed a 3/4" tear. Consumer has contacted dealership with concern for this problem, and was informed thattearwas due to "a puncture."dealer was unwilling to assistconsumer in any repair.please provide any additional information/attachments.

Problems with air bag light illuminating.*mrthe consumers had problems with the air bag light flashing in the dash. When taken to the service dealer they determined that the passenger frontal development loop had low resistance and the electrical circuits would have to determine the root cause as to why the light continue to flash on and off.

Dt:the contact stated while pulling into a parking area the vehicle lightly hit a curb.the front air bags deployed. Vehicle was traveling under5 mph.the manufacturer said the air bags would deploy under any circumstances.however, the service manual said the air bags would deploy from an impact while traveling 10-15 mph.the vehicle has not been inspected to determine the reason for the air bag deployment under 5 mph.

I was stopped at a red light and when the light turned green i made a right turn and turned to close to the curb and bumped it and both airbags deployed.the dealer says it's not their responsibility to fix, that i should call my insurance company and make a claim.my insurance says that if i make a claim i could be canceled since i have two prior claims that have been filed.all i did was catch the curb with the side of my front tire.the dealer says it will cost $2,100.00 to repair.the car is a 1999 saturn sl and is not worth that.even if i could file with my insurance they would total the car because it would cost more to repair than it is worth.i bought the car 11/26/08 and have already had to put a new water pump in it and now this.

1999 saturn air bags failed to deploy upon frontal impact.the seat belt also failed to restrain the consumer.the seat belt was the subject of a recalland the car was taken tothe dealer for repairs.

While driving 30 mph consumer's vehicle crashed head oninto a pole. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy. No injuries reported.

Windshield wipers failed, alarm disabled, horn failure, and interior light failed, possible electrical problems.

I just received a 1999 saturn sl 2 series a year ago from my mother for my very first car. I got it at about 100,000 miles and it is now currently at 122,446. I noticed about amonth ago while i would be driving, usually after about 1-2 miles after starting up the car and driving, my gears began to slip. I kept up with just about monthly oil changes, accompanied by transmission fluid checked and topped off. My transmission oil has never been low. Then, about 4 days ago i went to leave from my work orientation, and i couldn?t back up my car from my parking spot, the reverse had went out. So i put the car back in drive, then back to reverse thinking maybe it didn?t go into reverse all the way and it did not work. I revved up the engine, nothing happening until i did it pretty hard, and eventually it started rolling back a little. I looked up on the internet to see if this was a pretty big issue or not, and i realize i see it a lot in 1999 saturns. A recall i believe would be the best option for fixing this issue and would further prevent people from spending so much money. I took my car to a mechanic and it?s currently sitting there now. I don?t know what they are going to tell me. I believe it could be a small part that just needs replaced, but i?m sure they?re going to just have me purchase a whole new transmission which is not what i prefer to do as a 18 year old college student. Especially if the car was only 700$ that i purchased it for.

Consumer stated vehicle would not start, it was determined that the battery was not holding its charge.

I called mr.akinbusola desola akintola harrison on 08/03/06 for '99 saturn sl2 for sale over craigs list web-site date 08/02/06ad#[email protected]. When meeting him in person i asked him if the car had any damages, accidents or perhaps to disclose any information about the car. He said that the car is in perfect conditions its a clean car, no accidents, no dents the car was in good condition. When i asked him to bring the dmv paperwork along with registration and pink slip he only brought the dmv forms to fill out. The seller lost the pink slip, but with dmv form reg 227 you should receive a copy. Once we finished with the forms he asked for the payment to be in cash $2,500. After the transaction i drove him back to his home. He advised me to change the cars battery because he got the wrong one (a difference of $30.00 already!) i headed back to work & this car stopped running while still driving i parked it over my job's parking lot. I checked the registration: which was issued on 7/11/2006 pr/hist: salvage!!! he managed to fool me & mr.khan as well! he brought a printed out sales contract along with the dmv forms which seemed fair. Mr.akintola harrison kept the vehicle's registration with him at all times until he got the papers filled out, and signed and the $2,500.00 in cash. He released the car's registration placing it in between of all the dvm documents. I called him on monday 08/07/2006 until nowasking him in good faith to do a fair exchange (this vehicle has been parked over where i work since i bought it) in a friendly manner i asked him to get my money back with no hard feelings & when can we resolve this issue? i did changed the battery as requested (a $30.00 loss on me)mr. Harrison called my work number and told me that he has spent the $2,500 already; instead i should buy a new alternator! please help me with advice in how to approach this event!

Position of horn button is too low on the steering wheel andtoo small, making it difficult to find or use in an emergency situation. Manufacturer has improved the design in newer models, but not for older models.

The contact owns a 1999 saturn sl1.the contact stated that the horn assembly on the vehicle was completely inoperative.the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 98v307000 (communications:horn assembly), although the failures were identical.the contact would be responsible for the repair costs.the current and failure mileages were 135,000.

I have a 1999 saturn sl that i bought off a saturn employee two months ago; it was making a whining sound but she said that the sound was because it had a non standard part on it.the ignition locked up once or twice and now it will not crank nor start.i have checked the ignition switch, the starter-solenoid and all wires and cables.i have also called saturn and was told that they had no idea what it could be and that there weren't any recalls on any of the parts above nor any that could possibly cause the car not to crank or start.they suggested that i bring it in.

The plug wires were corroded due to water getting inside.

The ignition cylinder in the steering column jammed for no apparent reason.it required the car to be towed to the dealership; the entire ignition cylinder/lock assembly had to be replaced.the mileage on the car was only 47,616 miles.

Saturn was leaking oil into the radiator expansion tank and water in the oil.over heating really bad that the car will shut down and not start until cool, and it boils over in the radiator expansion tank.october '03 had head gaskets replaced, and the heads sent off for service, one month later, its back to leaking oil in the coolant and water in the oil.oxygen sensor went out, and has been replaced and so did the ignition modular, which has been replaced.

Automatic transmission control module failed. There was a recall issued; however, this vehicle was outside of the remedy scope.after three attempts to keep the "service engine light" from illuminating, the mechanic finally replaced the faulty ignition control module. Consumer felt the recall should go back a few more years. *ph

Consumer states while driving vehicle the ignition electrical system doesn't work properly, causing stalling engine. Also failure steering wheel and brakes. Dealer has been notified, any additional information please feels free to add on.ts

Ignition switch cylinder failed causing difficulties when turning key which was replaced sept.3,99. Problem still exist.

02 sensor failure, water pump, fuel pump, serpentine belt, fuse block - all parts defects within short span of time after their 36k warranty expired- atypical problems for car with this type of mileage.manufacturer contacted and would not reveal parts manfucturer - "not legally obligated to tell the public." as this car was no longer under warranty, i was informed that saturn would not reimburse for defective parts but would document that i was unhappy with my saturn experience.saturn not concerned about safety factors involved with repetitive parts failures. Offerred free oil change.did not offer to have car brought in for inspection or extending some kind of warranty in order to study any problems for corrective action with this particular car or model.

Air conditioning failed at 4 years, 4 months.new compressor needed, according to both saturn dealership and independent garage.not yet replaced.waiting to see if there is a hidden service bulletin by which saturn will replace at reduced cost.

While driving at highway speeds the vehicle stalled.consumer managed to pull over and restarted the vehicle. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

While driving at any speed vehicle make some vibration, consumer also complained has been history of problems in the last past three yearswith this vehicle. Dealer has inspected and can't correct the problem. Please provide further information. Ts

1999 saturn sl1 44300 miles on it. 3-4 weeks ago coolant light came on.checked coolant level was fine but milky subs floating on top.checked with radiator shop, suggested flush system and replace coolant.2 weeks later oil light came on. Checked oil, none on dip stick (3 weeks after oil change).added oil and vehicle was driven about 15-20 miles and began to overheat.vehicle was towed to saturn of monrovia where they found a cracked block.dealership and saturn corp. Are not willing to cover fixing the problem even though they know there are still problems with these engines.earlier models had warranties extended to 6 year/100,000 miles.saturn corp. Stated that vehicle was past that warranty and i am out of luck.i think that saturn should fix the problem at their expense as they know of the defects but continue to do nothing about it.i don't think i should have to pay almost $2,000 to have this defect fixed.i do have receipts since i have owned the vehicle (less then a year) and my brother owned the veh. Prior but didn't use saturn except twice to service the vehicle since they were not close to his residence while he lived in texas.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle used up a large amount of radiator fluid.there were no visible leaks on the driveway, however the reservoir had to be refilled every 3 days.the vehicle was taken to a private repair shop, where, upon inspection, there was moisture around the top of the radiator tank, and it was determined that the radiator tank had leaked from the top.

Defective brakes due to brake cylinder leakage, and engine stalled.ph

Once my saturn sl as at least 2 others that i know of that own this same type of vehicle, hit 100k miles or just slightly over, the head gasket blows. I loved the car until this point and would have purchased another if this wasn't a common issue with saturns.

In 2003 my daughter bought a 1999 saturn with 47000 miles that had just been turned in from a lease from a dealer and it started smoking and using a quart of oil per 1,000at which time we contacted this agency and gm because the car was alaways dealer serviced and had not yet reached it's half life.saturn told us that this was normal howver, the condition has only worsed over time and it's now using 1.5 qt's per 1000 miles and smoking worse.i bet the epa would like to know that.additionally the rotor have failed twice becoming warped and the motor mount has failed along with a coolent temp sensor.many people have reported these same problems and gm knows it.once again we asked them for some goodwill and they turned us down saying that the car (now) has too many miles even tho they said that it would be documented but it appears that they have strung us along doing leak down test at our cost from 2003 and from our gov complaint until now while telling us that this was normal use............ That was wrong and they should face a recall because they have allowed a problematic engine which they knew about to be sold to the general public and then they refused to help the consumers in need. I'll never buy a saturn or a gm again.and, i plan to sell my sons new saturn too after this poor treatment.

I have been adding coolant constantly.i took car for repair and was told the water pump needed replacement.i replaced the water pump and still having the problem with overheating.saturn issued a bulletin 01-t-07 that talks about the sensor problem.they will only reimburse the customer if it's still under warranty.i am upset because i continue to pay for items that i probably don't need because the problem could not be found.

The engine and head gasket was replaced.

Vehicle has been losingcooling fluid.consumer is adding 2 quarts a week forlast few weeks.inspected hoses, no leaks, also no fluid under vehicle when parked.

Coolant mixing with oil

Oil keeps collecting in the water reservoir seems to have developed the problem very suddenly took it to a garage and the head mechanic said this is a common problem with saturns so i am wondering if this is something of a design flaw that needs to be addressed, and the public needs to be informed about. Wonder if there is a manufacturer fix for the problem?

1999 saturn sl1-overheating, waterpump, radiator fan motor, thermostat and coolant temp sensor all replaced with factory parts.still overheating.this vehicle has a cracked head - same problem that was experienced on earlier models wher the warranty was extended to six years/100,000 miles.

Crack in head. Can't drive. Oe defect.

Engine stalled along with battery and oil light coming on, dealer found the oil pressure switch to be defective.

While driving, the vehicle stalled without warning.the consumer tried to restart the vehicle and was not able to do so. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the consumer that the engine was cracked and needed to be replaced.please provide further details.

Vehicle lost all power on two occasions, on first occasion, vehicle stalled while consumer was traveling 30 mph, vehicle would not restart and it was towed where dealercould not find anything wrong, the second occasion the vehicles electrical system turned off and on and vehicle would not restart, dealer again could not find any problems, dealer took a best guess and replaced the crankshaft position sensor and consumer states the vehicle has been running okay so far.

While driving at 30 mphengine was very loud, and the check engine light came on.consumer tookvehicle to a mechanic, who found no oil in the engine.three quarts were added, and the check engine light went out.two days later, check engine light blinked, and the temperature gauge was indicating that the vehicle was over heating.the consumer added coolant, but driving under three miles vehicle overheated again.the vehicle was taken back to the mechanic, who informed the consumer that oil and coolant were mixing together in the engine. A new engine was needed.

The head gasket leaked.

Faulty crankshaft position sensor. *ph. Last february the consumer had problems starting the vehicle and finally had it towed, where the dealer replaced the crankshaft position sensor.

One of the engine mounts had to be replaced at 50587 miles.

At about 81200 miles, the low coolant light came on.upon refilling the reservoir, i noticed that the coolant was discolored.i checked the oil and it was contaminated (milky colored).i took the car to my mechanic and was toldthe head was cracked.he also informed me that this is a chronic problem with saturn sohc engines and that i should try to get saturn to pay for the repair.after doing my own research, i found this to be true.i called saturn, at spring hill and was told that "since i hadn't taken the car back to saturn for scheduled maintenance, i probably would have to come out of pocket, for repairs."i do all my pm's and have receipts and mileage records to prove it.i was told, when i bought this car that "that would be fine."all saturn has done so far, is give me a case number (1-5883104).my problem is, i don't have the money to fix this problem.i don't want to drive the car to saturn and compound the problem, yet saturn won't pay for a tow and from what i have read, regarding this exact same problem, with other saturn owners, once they have your car, you have to fight tooth and nail to get them to pay for the job and in some cases, they simply wont.i realize that my car is out of warranty, but this seems like this is something saturn has known about for several years and did nothing to correct it.

Consumers vehicle has a cracked head gasket.consumer calledsaturn company to inquire about the vehicle being fixed and they refused to fix it. Consumer requests a refund of money paid for repairs.*jg....

Oil was leaking from the engine going under the intake manifold. Consumer contacted the manufacturer to resolve this issue. However, manufacturer was only willing to pay $200.00 toward the cost of repairing the vehicle. Consumerwas afraid that the defect may cause the vehicle to develop a blown head gasket......vehicle experienced vibration in steering wheel when driving 50 mph due to defective brake rotors. Also, replaced engine head gasket.

It appears this vehicle has a cracked head ,water is mixing in the oil.low coolant light came on ,checked level resavoir down to 1 inch.filled with 2quarts.light came on next day same fluid level.pulled dip stick and noticed the water oil mixture.vehicle had been serviced since new by saturn dealer under contract.waiting for estimate.this seems to be the same problem that was experienced on earlier models wher the warranty was extended to six years/100,000 miles.

Timing chain broke causing extensive damage to engine.

A mixture of oil and anti-freeze were noted.i brought the vehicle to the dealer where they told me that the head was cracked due to a manufacturing defect.they replaced the head and cooling system hoses only.now 10,000 miles later i am hearing a knocking sound from the engine.i brought the car to a mechanic where he informed me that the bottom half of the engine is gone and needs to be replaced.he stated that the dealer (saturn of morristown, nj) should have replaced the entire engine instead of just the top half.*la

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 15 to 20 mph, the engine suddenly lost power.there were no warning indicators prior to the failure.the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop who determined the crank position sensor needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was alerted of the problem.updated 06/15/06.

The cylinder head cracked by #5 cylinder by cam journal on a 1999 saturn sl-1 4 door sedan with 54,950miles.dealer cost was $2,100.00, saturn covered $700.00.dealer claimed this was an isolated incident yet had the replacement head assembly in stock.

Intermittentlyvehicle stalls out and dies. Dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem. Manufacturer has been notified.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the vehicle stopping on the middle of the road for no specific reason . Manufacturer was contacted and stated that if it happens againthen they will help him. Mr

I wish the state had more stringent lemon laws. I will have had to bring my car in for repairs 5 times now, and i feel that is ridiculous for a car ive only had for 6 months. There are problems that exist now and have reoccurred or probably will. Saturn should definitely produce but better cars if they want people to buy them... I certainly won't buy another one or any gm product. I have not contacted saturn directly because i know that they won't do anything about it as i had dealings with another saturn. Furthermore, bringing the car to the dealer seems to be a hassle. I have to go out of my way to get my "lemon car" fixed repeatedly for minor problems which are really annoyances.no defect mentioned in summary.

Engine stalled on a rainy day.nlm

While exiting the freeway, i came to a stop at the end of the ramp at a red light, the auto stalled, i tried to restart it without success, i then saw black smoke billowing from the engine compartment, by the thme the fire dept. Arrived the front end of the car was completely destroyed. The headlights were melted, as was the fenders and front bumper.

Dt:the vehicle is a 1999 saturn sl. When the check engine light came on the consumers daughter took it to get the oil changed.four days later on 6-25-05, she heard an explosion; the cap on the radiator coolant had popped off.she noticed that there was something gushing out of the vehicle, which turned out to be the coolant and oil mixed.this mixture is currently splattered on the consumers driveway.afterwards she contacted the place were she got the oil changed and they told her to bring it in.she had the vehicle towed to the them on 6-27.they told her they thought it was a cracked head gasket.afterwards when the consumer called them she was told that there were problems with those types of vehicle.there is a recall number 0304. They do not have the option to repair vehicles just oil changes and such. So she took it to the dealership saturn of amarillo, which told her that it was a cracked cylinder head. They informed her that they would have to replace the cylinder head, thermostat, and the water pump.the vehicle is current being fixed at another dealership. When asking the dealership about the recall they told her they know nothing about a recall for that problem.when she contacted the manufacture they told her there was nothing that she could have done to prevent this problem.afterwards, her daughter called and they told her there was no recall on her vin number.consumer feels that the manufacture should reimburse her for the cost caused by this malfunction.

The serpentine belts were cracked.

After both my children at different times told me that i had an exhaust leak because i am experiencingincresased exhaust noise (i had it checked), i ran across an article in "highways" magazine (good sam club) that stated there was a recall for the 2000-2003 saturn l-series. I own a 1999 saturn l-series and it is showing all the signs of the same problem described in the recall nhtsa campaign id number 03v231000. The car has been sluggish and very hard to start along with the increased exhaust noise. This model/year saturn should be included in the recall...there is a problem with it also! when i took the car to the service dealer in march, 2001, they said it was the battery and they installed a new one but it did not improve the performance of the car. It continues to be a problem and it is getting worse.

Vehicle was taken to the dealer for a routine inspection, and mechanicdetermined that the resonator cracked, and needed to be replaced.this was the second time the resonator cracked.the consumer wanted the resonator welded but the dealer suggested a new resonator because they were redesigned and completely different from the old ones.the consumer believes that if the manufacturer realized there was a flaw with the resonators that they should have been recalled.

- the contactownsa 1999 sl2 saturn.the contact stated that the front driver's side tire shredded and pulled out the injection circuit so fuel was not getting into the cylinder.the contact stated that the vehicle had been sitting for three years.also, the jack did not work.the failure and current mileage were both 95000.

The contact owns a 1999 saturn sl2.the contact stated that the passenger side rear brake light does not function properly.she has replaced the fuse and bolts several times, but the light continues to experience shortages.the contact felt that the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign number 05v245000 (exterior lighting: brake lights).the powertrain was unknown.the current mileage was 137,000 and failure mileage was 90,000.

I own and operate two 1999 saturn models ls1 vehicles at aaa driving school.they are used for teaching behind-the- heel driving instruction.both instructors, several students and myself have experienced difficulty with the turn signal/headlight switch combination, especially at night with the headlights operating.the headlight on/off switch is located on the end of the turn signal arm.to turn it on the operator must turn it counter clockwise through two positions.this headlight switch has very little tension, requiring nothing more than a light "flick" counterclockwise to turn on. The turn signal however, is another story. Itrequires approximately 2-4 lbs. Of pressure to engage.the arm of the turn signal is also very short in comparison to other vehicles with the same size steering wheel. Approximately 1 1/2 inches shorter than otherturn signal arms in comparable vehicles.this "shortness" requires the operator to remove the left hand from the wheel, grasp and pull down or push up.(unless they have longer than normal fingers) at night, when the headlight switch is in the "on"position and the operator/driver removes hand from wheel to engage the left turn signal, they inadvertantly turn off the headlights.this is very unsafe.also requiring an operator/driver to remove one hand from the steering wheel to engage/disengage the turn signal which is done when changing lanes is also very dangerous.the pounds of pressure required is excessive in both engage/disengage functions of the turn signal relative to the amount of pressure required to turn the headlight switch on or off.complaints to the saturn dealer and factory have been unanswered.in las vegas, with its brightly lit streets it is quite common to see a saturn being driven without headlights or tail lights on.so, i am not the only one experiencing the problem.

Driving at 40 mph when rpm gauge started to go down, deceleration occurred and car stalled. Attempts to restart car resulted in it repeatedly stalling. While trying to restart rpm's were going to high before the car actually stalled.the car was taken back to the dealer and the fuel pump and idler air control module were replaced.

1999 saturn slplastic grommet connection between shifter cable and shifter. Just broke. Apparently engineered with a mind for obsolescence rather than safety or durability. Enabling a high repair cost for a 50 cent bushing that should last the life of the entire shifter cable and shifter. Cheap fix (time and part wise) for car manufacturer if still under warranty. Conveniently costly for owner when car is not under warranty.

Dt: prior to failure the rear door handle was not working properly, and the windowhad a motor problem. While driving therear door popped open.children were in the car, and consumerstopped immediately, took it to get repaired. They said it was a problem with the child safety locks being broken.

My hand brake button suddenly popped out showing to be broken andi could no longer put the hand brake in place. Still trying to find a fix. Difficult to park on steep driveways.

The contact owns 1999 saturn sl1.the contact was driving 45 mph when the shift cable fractured and caused the vehicle to shift into neutral. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer made repairs to the vehicle. On a later date, the contact applied the emergency brake before exiting the vehicle. When he returned, the emergency brake had independently disengaged. The contact discovered that the emergency brake button was defective. The contact was able to order the necessary part from the dealer to make repairs himself. The contact was concerned that had he been parked on a hill, the vehicle could potentially have rolled away. The failure mileage was 103,000.

Within the past few months when i put the vehicle in reverse it jerks violently. This problem is not consistent. I attempted to have it looked at by the dealer they said they couldn't replicate the problem.upon speaking to one of the associates at the dealer they said they think they know what it is ... Its a common problem but wait until the car does it regularly and it will cost approx $1200 to fix.this is a known problem and saturn/gm needs to do a recall on these transmissions.

While pulling inside of the garage without warning the vehicle shifted into reverse.the driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle.the driver contacted a mechanic and the mechanic came over to inspected the vehicle.the mechanic informed the driver that the asm-m cable lever for the transmission needed replacement.please fill in additional information.

Clutch starts slipping suddenly. Dealer and manufacturer were contacted, and were aware of the problem, buttherewas nothing they could do. While in cruise control at 5mph vehicle will accelerate to 8mph.

Differential pin dislodged, causing crack in transmission.

My manual transmission 1999 saturn sl2 1.8 ltr sohc was driving down the road and the shifter went limp. I was almost hit from behind. I found it was the cheap plastic shifter bushing which attaches the shift cable to the stick. I don't have the money to buy the entire cable, saturn does not sell the bushing only, went to a junk yard and got the part for a dollar.

Consumer was informed the transmission fluid was burnt.

Bad bearing in manual transmission- estimate around $1000-options: take tis one apart or buy used transmission- this should not happen in a car this new-car doesn't even have 48000 miles yet.

While drivingfourth gear on themanual transmission doesn't engage properly. Dealernotified.

Like many other owners of saturn automobiles with five-speed manual transmissions, i had the bushing on the shift cable break. The repair set me back $400. From what i have seen on the internet (http://www.chaosmagnet.com/blog/archives/000112.html) and other websites, this is a common problem. I have a 1999 saturn sl. According to reports from many people, this problem has persisted over many model years. My question to you is this: why has saturn been allowed to provide a known faulty design to the american public? a shift cable breaking (rather the cheap plastic bushing which attaches to the shift lever breaking) when the driver is in traffic or on the interstate highway system could cause havoc at the very least. A driver unable to shift the gears of his vehicle could cause problems to others on the road. I wonder how many accidents this design fault has caused.again i ask, why has this manufacturer been allowed to provide a faulty product to the american public? with the advent of the internet, many people who have a common problem can discover just how large the magnitude of any problem can be. I wonder if the executives of saturn expect to "sweep this problem under the carpet" like the executives of ford during the "flaming pinto" era. Lee iacocca was even able to get a large loan from the american taxpayers to help out chrysler. According to witnesses, lee (then at ford) and other ford executives decided that paying injury lawsuit awards would be cheaper than fixing the problem. Well, they were wrong -- they had to do both.again i wonder, why does the u.s. Government allow another automobile manufacturer (saturn) to produce another faulty product?thank you for your attention to this matter.

Correction of information in previous submission #10166978.

Shift cables broke while driving down highway leaving vehicle disabled.mileage was 50700.

The driver's/passenger's seat belts would flip over when retracting. Would jam in top guide. This causes the belts to get caught in the door frame. The belts would also be twisted when retracting out to be used. Poor design. A continuous problem. Contacted manufacturer who has no corrective solution to problem.

My wife was involved in an auto accident where she was wearing her seat belt that ended up breaking.in my conversations with other people i have come across 2 other people that had the same issue with the same manufacturer(saturn).

The driver side seat beltdon't stay fasten. This results in driver not being secured in the seat if vehicle is in anaccident.the dealership is not fixing the problem, cause they can't duplicate. The problem has worsen as time goes on.please provide more details.ts

1999 saturn air bags failed to deploy upon frontal impact.the seat belt also failed to restrain the consumer.the seat belt was the subject of a recalland the car was taken tothe dealer for repairs.

I own a 1999 sl1 saturn.on wednesday 06/07/06, when i was taking my 23 month old daughter out of her car seat, i noticed that the car seat was loose.upon further inspection, i found the buckle that holds the seat belt (the one that comes up from underneath the seat) had come un-stitched.when i pulled on the buckle it came out in my hand. I emailed saturn thursday morning and they told me to contact my local saturn dealership.i went to my local dealership, saturn of burlington, on friday and showed them the part and talked with the service manager.she told me that they had never seen this before.she also told me that with the age of the car, being 7 years old, the best she could do for me was 10% off the part. It didn't a matter to her that we had only been using that seat belt for the last 4 months, since the birth of our son.the part costs approximately $49.00.it is not the cost that bothers me, it is the "not my problem" attitude that bothers me.i was even going to put the buckle in myself.the dealership suggested i call the saturn customer service.i left the dealership upset that they didn't see the enormity of the situation.i later called saturn customer service and talked with melissa.after explaining the email that i sent thursday, the conversation at saturn of burlington, and my disappointment in the seat belt failure, she offered me a one time $50.00 inconvenience gift certificate that i could use at any saturn dealership.how can saturn take seat belt failure so lightly?we are expected to buckle up every time we get in the car, but what is the point if the manufacturer of the given vehicle doesn't need to hold up their end of the bargain.maybe we only need to buckle up in a vehicle that is less than 7 years of age since faulty seatbelts could be a given.if we had been in an accident before i found the buckle was un stitched, what would have happened to my 23 month old daughter, & my 4 month old son seated right beside her?

Seat belts constantly try to flip over when retracting. When this occurs, they catch in the doors and can be easily damaged. When they flip over, they then fil over the occupant twisted until the side pillar is opened to straighten the fabric at the retractor. Even when not flipped, the front belts tend to come twisted over your body. I've never had a vehicle where you must pay so much attention to how you put on and take off the belts to avoid twisting them. It's a poor design, and my 1996 & 1997 saturns did not have this problem. The dealer and manufacturer offer no solution since the redesign of the front belts allowing vertical adjustment created the problem. Many customers will weaken the belts by catching them in the doors over and over. I don't think too many will pay to replace them. If the top belt clip were redesigned, the tendency to twist might be reduced. I hope you can convince the manufacturer to provide a fix for this issue. It's not only me. All users of my vehicle have the same complaint about the belts in front. Thank you.

While traveling at about 30 mph consumer was rear ended, and consumer, in return, rearendedcar in front.upon impact, driver's side seat fully reclined/seatbelt popped off, and none of the airbags deployed.please provide any further information.

The driver's side seat belt shoulder harness (shoulder bolt) fell off, possible error in assembly, was not tightened properly when manufactured.

Rear center seatbelt buckle will no longer buckle.

Consumerwas at a stop sign and was rearended by another vehicle. Driver's seatbelt did not engage, consumer suffered back and wrist injuries. Damage to vehicle was $ 2000.00.

Vehicle rear ended while at a complete stop.drivers' side seat back let go, and seat belt released, causing driver to be thrown forward and backwards.this was a low impact collision, and no injury would have occurred if seat and belt had held up during collision.

Reporting problem with manual seat latch, unable to latch seat in place; seat continue to move back and forth until her husband was able to secure seat.the driver can't reach the pedal when the seat moves back.

The vehicle was involved in a collision, and the front seats reclined backwards.

I was turning onto a street that was down to one lane due to construction. The woman who let me turn onto the street "heard tires squealing" and thought i was speeding up (though i was not moving due to traffic inching forward slowly) and she hit the gas to speed up. She rear-ended me so hard that even though my foot was on the brake, i hit the guy in front of me and at the same time my seat back fell backward onto the back seat (reclining position). When the seat reclined, it made it tricky to reach the brake, clutch or accelerator so i had to throw on the emergency brake to prevent any further bumper cars! the seat now seems to be "stripped" and the slightest pressure makes it go "click click click" back to a reclining position. I am waiting for the part to come in to fix it but that accident could have been much worse if i did not have my head about me and hadn't been able to get the emergency brake on.

Vehicle rear ended while at a complete stop.drivers' side seat back let go, and seat belt released, causing driver to be thrown forward and backwards.this was a low impact collision, and no injury would have occurred if seat and belt had held up during collision.

I was involved in a rear end collision to my 1999 sl1 saturn sedan that caused the rear seat to collapse so that i was prone after the accident and neither air bag deployed (driver or passenger).

While driving consumer applied the brakes and vehicle shift gear without warning. Please provide additional information. Ts

Hand brake release button and spring popped out after parking the vehicle. Had this happened while the vehicle was unattended and parked on a hill (as it typically is), this car could have caused serious bodily harm or structural damage.

When the brake pedal wasdepressed while coming to a complete stopmotor revved, butvehicle failed to stop. This resulted in extended stopping distance.

Brake pedal was applied and there was no pressure.pedal went to the floor, resulting inextended stopping distance. Dealer has been contacted.

Vehicle has had 3 multiple incidents of heavy brake pulsation caused by front rotors, and one failure of abs sensors causing abs failure. Dealer cannot correct recurring pulsation problems.

The brakes with abs (i have experience driving vehicles equipped with abs braking) tend to provide extended stopping distances, especially at low speeds, where near loss of control of the vehicle is experienced.during braking, the brakes will feel as if they are only partially applied, so more pressure is placed on the brake peddle, eventually depressing it fully, without any further braking response.the car feels as if it is gliding on ice and simply slides to a stop in about two to three times the typical stopping distance.the car does not feel like it is going to stop at all and feels, instead, as if it is going to continue rolling.this problem has been reported to the saturn dealer where the car was purchased from, yet they can not find any problems (identical saturn cars provided while this car was in the shop did not experience similar braking problems, they had higher mileage and stopped without incident).this issue has resulted in one vehicle accident due to failure of the brakes to stop the vehicle at speeds under 40 mph (3/8/99 @ 596 miles) and has resulted in at least twelve other near collisions.although the dealer can not find a problem they have sanded the front pads (6,554 miles), replaced the front pads (11,385 miles brakes were grinding, found front rotors and pads to be overheated and glazed, only 40% remaining on pads), and resurfaced the front rotors (6,554 and 11,385 miles).the vehicle needs to go in again to have its brakes inspected and rotors resurfaced at only 22,500 miles (braking quality is degrading and the vehicle and steering wheel shakes, pulsates, and vibrates during braking).neither my wife or i feel safe driving this vehicle because we do not know if it will stop every time and how many car lengths it will take to finally come to a complete stop.the braking problem is somewhat more likely to occur when the cruse control is switched to the on position, even if it is not actually controlling the vehicles speed.

Vehicle vibrates when applying brakes at speed over 45 mph. Dealer replaced pads. But, itdid not remedy situation.

I applied brakes to slow down and trun left, but the brakes failed, i could not turn the wheel and the car crashed into a house.

When applying brakes pedal felt spongy, and there was extended stoppping distance.vehicle was examined by dealer, who stated brakes were in working order.consumer stated the brakes would grind and squeak.

While driving at 60-65 mphsteering wheel will start to shake. Contacted dealer, and the dealer could not find problem after nine attempts.consumer states rough idle when warm.dealer replaced pcm/ecm, but problem still exist. Power steering fluid low.experiencing shimmy when braking. Noise from gas tank when coming to a stop.

While driving 45 mphapplied brakes andpedal felt soft and spongy, no braking action.this happened 2 more times. No accident. Vehicle was taken to dealer, who did nothing more than look at the brake padsand said there was nothing wrong.

According to diagrammed police report and personal photos taken (i can provide copies of all, saturn skidded approximately 80 ft due to left, front brake locking at 35 mph.vehicle started to turn to right just before impacting a suburban rearend.saturn does not have abs; however, at 35 mph most vehicles will stop before 80 feet.would like to know of other incidents.

The brakes vibrate when applying, dealership considers this a trait of the vehicle. *mjs

I purchased a 1999 saturn sl2 w/ 23,000mi.at 60,000mi i began to feel a judder/vibration from the steering wheel.i took it to a saturn dealer and was told the rotors we're warped and needed to be replaced.i went to a repair shop and had non-oem brake rotors installed and after approxiametely 65,000mi, began to have the same problem.after leaving the car with the repair shop, they could not find anything wrong, but my rotors keep warping.the repair shop cut the rotors "slightly" and now at 70,000mi i still have the same problem.there is definietly wrong with the design of the brake system.i have been told that rotors do warp but they should last for approx. 70,000mi, and i should not be feeling the judder/vibration in my steering wheel.

Vehicle experienced problems with the brakes.a technician found that the rear brakes were out of adjustment, causing noise, consumer states this could possibly be due to faulty installation of the tire assembly.*jg

Vehicle experienced brake failure.

Brakes squeak when driving, was advised by mechanic that front pads and rear shoes are at 90% no problem, was advised that squeaking is normal due to moisture, humidity and morning dew.

Defective brakes due to brake cylinder leakage, and engine stalled.ph

Front brake rotors started to warp at ~15000 miles.it should be noted that i mostly clutch-brake and those 15000 miles were not city traffic.the dealer quickly turned the rotors under at no charge to me, however i fear that they may fail again.i suggest that this may be a design issue.

The quality of the rotors is questionable and may lead to brake failures.

Oil was leaking from the engine going under the intake manifold. Consumer contacted the manufacturer to resolve this issue. However, manufacturer was only willing to pay $200.00 toward the cost of repairing the vehicle. Also, replaced engine head gasket.

Power steering fluid low.experiencing shimmy when braking. Noise from gas tank when coming to a stop.

Consumer states that alldoors and quarter panels are made of a polymer plastic.the doors are riveted underneath with polymer to metal.as a result, the doors are deteriorating and falling apart.the doors are constantly "stuck" closed due to the condition and forcing them to open is expediting the deterioration.

When lifting the trunk consumer's finger was cut on a sharp edge near the roof of the truck. Consumer was taken tohospital wherereceived eight stitches.*ml

Saturn is ripping people off by making them buy a $250 part just to get a $5 bushing. I think that something needs to be done where we get to decided what we replace.

No crash ... Yet.car has a significant shimmy at hiway speed, can actually see and feel front end tracking right/left in a constant shimmy.gives very scary feel when driving in rain, especially on curves.dealer first claimed bad tires, which were replaced, then claimed out of balance tires, which they fixed, then claimed this is normal design characteristic and not a defect.

This vehicle, which has never been in an accident, was diagnosed by dealer as having two "warped" front wheel hubs after complaints of intermittent steering wheel shake at 65 mph.dealer said it could have been caused by the hubs being installed incorrectly.saturn cust svc refuses to pay for the repair, which appears to have been caused by mfg defect.

The driver's side front tire popped causing the rim to develop sharp edges around it. The rim cut the rubber wiring for the brakes causing the brakes to fail.

The front and rear passenger's side tires along with the rear driver's side tire developed rather large blisters on the outside side walls. The front passenger's side tire blew out causing the front end of the car to lift and jerk. Firestone was of no help to us. They were reluctant to and never did admit any fault. We ended up replacing all four tires out of our pockets with another name brand for safety sake. (tiresize: 15 inch)( dot number:tire size: 15 inch )

While i was driving the rear passenger side tire came apart and tore into pieces practically throwing me off of the road. These are new tires. The tread is hardly worn. They were rotated on schedule. This tire was inflated to the psi indicated in the manual and was practically brand new. If you'll look closely at the 2nd picture you'll see that it was manufactured backwards (i.e. The info on how to place the tire what is the front and what is the back of the tire was printed on the wrong side). Could this be the cause for the tire coming apart this way? thankfully there was no damage to the car or to my mother however she was made to pay for another tire at the firestone store she went to for service. I was driving on a highway at about 50 mph as the rear passenger tire blew out, i lost control of the car, swerved over a lane then off the highway, hitting the curb and ending up in a grassy area.the police arrived and courtesy patrol arrived to assist in changing the tire.their objective was to immediately get me on my way, so the courtesy worker threw my tire into the trunk and i left.when i got to the tire store we evaluated the tire and 40% of the tire had separation.the car has maintenance done every 3000 miles, so tires were rotated and properly inflated.( dot number: w2epbca428 tire size: p17570r14 )

Has 4 cracked firestone, p175/70r14 tiresat sidewall .took tires to firestone dealer, and was told he was busy and could not help. Dot# w2epbca338.

The sidewall has a definite seperation around theentire edge, i reported it to my dealership but they denied any defects, then saturn sent me a letter infroming me they would completely warrant the tire but dealer still refuses to do it even withproof from letter. (tiresize: p175/70r14)( dot number:tire size: p175/70r14 )

In the year that i have owned the car, two of the firestone oem tires have developed blisters on the sidewalls.one tire i have replaced at my own expense, the other is still on the car.saturn and firestone each deny responsibility for the defective tires and refer my complaints to the other.

I was driving my niece's and nephew was holding onto the bars in the ceiling and it came off the bars in the ceiling while i was driving my whole roof liner came off i couldn't see i had to pull the whole liner down so i wouldn't get in an accident i noticed after i got home the metal brackets that the screws we're holding on was split i cannot fix them back i feel it's a safety hazard and we almost got in an accident it needs to be fixed i have little kids i take care of i feel it's a recall and needs to be fixed the brackets and the liner fell off i threw the liner away the vehicle was in motion i was coming from richmond va picked them up to come to my mom's house in king william va i was on interstate 95 i have more pictures than this## vin passed ## 1999 saturn sl2 ##

While backing into a public driveway and putting the vehicle into drive, while taking her foot off of the brake, the vehicle took off, consumer lost control and hit a parked car, the vehicle bounced from that car, traveled across the street and hit another parked vehicle, consumer was injured in the accident.

When the brake pedal wasdepressed while coming to a complete stopmotor revved, butvehicle failed to stop. This resulted in extended stopping distance.

Over the last few years the driver side windshield wiper has come loose several times.saturn dealer has retightened it.i have retightened it.dealer has retightened it again.i have retightened it again.dealer has never offered or suggested an actual repair to stop these repeated loosening of the windshield wiper.

While rainingwindshield wiper arms fell off, consumer was unable to see, and hadto have arm out of the window to hold wiper amr on. Took to dealer, and they only tighted up the bolt.it's loose again, vehicle has been in shop over 6 times for the same problem.the dealer states that warm weather causes wipers to stick to window.

When snow builds up on the windshield the the wipers become inoperative because the bolts holding them come loose. Dlr says that it is normal.

While i was driving on the interstate, the wheel liner became disengaged and blew into the front left tire. Although no accident ensued, a lesser-skilled driver could possibly lose control and crash. The manufacturer claims the liner was damaged while parking at a curb. I maintain that this is not so, that the material is defective; but if so, there is an inherent design flaw that allows such damage to occur before the tire can contact the curb.
