I own a 2004 saturn l300; on several occasions over the past several weeks i have seen wisps of smoke coming from the steering column, followed by a strong smell of burning plastic. The area behind the steering wheel is extremely hot to the touch, and i am told it is a fire hazard and that the headlamp stalks need to be replaced for overheating, which may run up to $600 with labor. I have been forced to pull my car over on busy roads, in heavy traffic to let it cool before restarting, and am worried that the faulty wires will cause a fire.

Purchased on 9/17/04. After 1 1/2 weeks, noticed that headlights and dashboard lights intermittently dim on & off every 1/2 to 1 mile.took to saturn, was told that this was a normal characteristic, they changed sun sensor thought to be the problem.this did not fix my problem and it appears that the problem has worsened.the saturn corporation has maintained that this is a normal characteristic in this car and refused to do any further repairs. I was also told that the problem with the headlights would not be noticeable to any traffic on the road. However due to my experiences and others i have read on the internet, that this is not true and could potentially become an extremely dangerous and lethal situation. I feel this is a serious safety defect, any saturn with this problem should be immediately taken off the highways until this situation is repaired. It has come to my attention now that saturn of hartford had in its possession notification since january 2004 from saturn corporation that the l300 series vehicle could have this flaw and that saturn refuses to repair it. I am extremely upset that i was not notified of this situation prior to buying the car because it would have changed my mind as to which vehicle i would have purchased. I am now scared to drive this vehicle at night.

My brake lights and my 3rd brake light that is on the inside of the rear window is not working correctly and at times my frontinside instrument panel lights will go dim and now have completely stopped working and also my inside interior lights have stopped working completely (example) when you open the doors no interior lights come on at all and also will not even come on when you try to turn them on by hand and my map lights on the under side of my inside rear view mirror or map lites have stopped working and the 3rd brake lights located inside the center of the rear windshield now have 2 lites that are completely stopped coming on and my tag lights do not work any more and all this started appx. 4 months ago when a police officer pulled me over after dark and told me about my brake lights not working correctly and no tag lite and 3 weeks prior is when the instrument panel inside started acting up and now no lights work at allinside and this happens whether the car is moving or not and with it sitting in park al this happens and also no trunk lite or glove box lites up !

While driving on the freeway 70 mph acceleration will drop down to 5 mph.dealership stated that there was something wrong with computer that threw the vehicle into idle mode.this problem also occurred in the owner's previous saturn model l200 2002. The cause was still undetermined.

The car just shuts down while in motion. Most of the time it shuts off when trying to stop the vehicle. It will eventually crank up in about an hour only to shut down again. The car shut down as i was with my wife and daughter on i-95 going 65 mph. We were stranded for about 3 hrs. On the interstate before the car cranked back up. The vehicle was purchased through drive time and has a warranty on it . After complaining to the company about the vehicle they instructed me to have a diagnosis done on it to find out what the problem was. I was also informed that a recall was out for saturn cars from the news. I contacted gm and explained what was happening andthey gave me a case number but also stated that the model car i have was not on the recall list and for me to take it to a gm dealership near me to have another diagnosis done on the car which was an extra $125. U.s.a auto service performed a diagnosis on the car the to see if it was the ignition switch that was causing the car to shut completely off while the car was moving. They could not get a diagnosis from the ignition. I contacted the warranty company for drive time and they informed me that nothing was covered because it was electrical. Then i called gm back and told them the car was not safe to drive and what the diagnosis report said and they told me that there was nothing they could do unless i paid the $125 with them to have another one done. Then they would determine if it was the ignition. I am at my wits end because nobody wants to take responsibility for the electrical system that will cost close to $1,000 to have fix. I am currently making payments on this car and can't afford all this money. I had the car serviced with u.s.a auto service because drive time requires you to keep up with the maintenance of the car which i faithfully did. Now the whole electrical system has failed.

The headlights and dash lights dim almost all the way out unpredictably.the dash light dimming draws the driver's attention away from the road, while the headlights dimming draws the attention of other drivers and the police.many drivers think that you are signaling them and this can lead to road rage incidents.also, in many states signaling other drivers of a police presence is against the law.this is a safety issue as on many occasions i have lost sight of the road while driving.it is only blind luck that prevented me from being involved in a major accident.

Wiper switch heats up on ignition and also randomly while running - causing smoke and burning smellfrom steering column and wipers to turn on by themselves. First replacement done by certified mechanic with certified gm part cost $365. 3 years later, it's the same issue again!

The battery warning and emergency service lights (i.e., "the car with the wrench" signal) flashed on my 2004 saturn l300 in mid-may 2008. I was on the highway at the time. As i slowed down to exit the speedometer stopped. I made it home and parked it in the car port. I had it towed to saturn of birmingham (sob) the next morning. Sob has had it for 4 days now. The service tech's (at least three have looked at it) have had a difficult time determining what the problem is. For now, the power train (pcm) has been replaced. But the service rep informed me that the alternator is overcharging so they will have to replace it as well. The battery has been drained, which will make this the second time i have had to replace the battery on this car (the first time was after only 2.5 years). The service rep indicated that the tech will have to do a thorough check on the vehicle to make sure there are no other problems that could have been triggered by the pcm/alternator/battery failure.

I have a saturn l300 and was driving on the highway in the left lane one day and the car just shut down and stopped running.when my mechanic read the electrical code on the car it was the bcm that had failed.i had read that this is a known common issue with these vehicles and wanted to know why this is not a recall on the vehicle since it could be a safety issue as in my case.i did avoid and accident and got to the side of the road without getting hit or hitting someone else but it was definitely could have been worse and i had my 4 year old in the vehicle with me at the time.since that happened i have notices other things going wrong on the vehicle that are attached thebcm, radio stopped working, keyless remote stopped working, defrost on side mirrors don't work...which are not safety issues but what cause it to shut my car down on the highway when i was driving was scary and unsafe!!!

My wife and i own a 2004 saturn l300. My wife is the primary driver and she reported seeing a wisp of smoke coming from the steering column. We took it to the saturn dealership and they said it was an electrical short. A couple of weeks later my wife reported the same wisp of smoke. We took it back to the dealership to have them repair it again. The second time they repaired it, the turn signal would not turn off when the wheel was turned. Also, the wisp of smoke is back again. This will be the third time into the dealership for the same problem. I am concerned because i don't want it to start a fire while it is being driven. This does not include the other issues including the power steering rack failing, the water pump failing, and the plenum failing. The car only has 46,000 miles on it and my wife has put about 13,000 in 27 months.

When parked on a slight incline vehicle will not start.

2004 saturn ion - will not start if outside temp is below freezing.service vehicle light comes on.if you wait 5-10 minutes then the car will start.this has happened 15+ times to me in the last month.

My 2004 saturn ion will not start when the weather is cold. After several visits to the mechanic it was discovered that this is because of a fault in the ignition switch which keeps it from starting when it gets below a certaintemperature.i was told this is a common problem in saturn ions and that the cost to fix it would be over $200.

Intermittently while driving atnight the headlights and dashboard lightsblink on and off.the lights would stay off for a few secondsthen come back on again. The dealer claimed that this was perfectly normal.this problem occurred four times in the last two weeks.the consumer indicated tha the vehiclke also lost power while drivng.the vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable to determined the cause of the problem.

We have recently purchased an 04 l300 and have stated having problems with the headlights and dash lights.while driving at night, the headlights and dash lights have gone off and come back on.on one such occassion, a tractor trailer pulled over on us thinking we had notified him to do so.it was just by the grace of god we were not crushed.later that same night, a police officer pulled us over wanting to know why we were blinking our head lights at him.we explained the problem and were told that he could right us a ticket but would not this time and to get the problems corrected.after taking this issue to our saturn dealership, we were told that according to a memo dated february 2004 that "this is normal characteristic" for this vehicle.the dealership and corp. Have refused to do anything to assist with correcting this problem.the car is only 3 months old and still under warranty but they suggested that we pay $450 for a new alternator and purchase another extended bumper to bumper warranty.all stating that this may not correct the problem.this is a serious safety issue that is going to result in someones death if not corrected.what does it take to get this handled?please advise with assistance in pursuing a recall or having my car declared a lemon.

2004 saturn l 300, 6 cylinder . My daughter was driving on and the engine just shut off, loosing all power and all service lights appeared. Had it towed to my house. Hooked up a obd scanner to car. 8 codes appeared. Bcm/ecm malfunction.(4 codes of this), crankshaft position sensor (2 codes of this), engine running too rich (2 codes of this). I have read many cases online through forums, and this seems too be a big problem.

I was driving up a small incline, preparing to stop for a traffic light, engine began to race, i could not stop, brakes were fine but engine was racing. I had to put car in park, checked for blockage with floor mat, there was not any. Put 4 -way blinkers on, shut car off. Restarted car and it was fine. Happened again on feb. 22nd this time tried 4 times shutting down and still raced. Had to park car, upon returning 2 hours later car was fine. I have also had trouble starting car, started in june 2014, if ignition did not engage when key was turned car had to sit for 1/2 hour before starting.

Car stalled while driving in traffic and would not restart. Car also failed to start on some mornings and also after filling at gas station. Its seems that this issue can go on for sometime between the times it happens.

Problem synopsis:while driving at freeway speeds (65 miles per hour) the vehicle lost power, causing the "reduced engine power" (rep) and "service vehicle soon" (svs) lights to illuminate.upon pulling to the side of the road and shifting the vehicle into park, it would idle roughly until shutting the engine off.vehicle would start immediately after, with high rpm at idle and hard shifts into gear.vehicle would only exhibit these problems when the automatic transmission would shift gears, usually between 3rd and 4th gear.///repair history:a repair shop diagnosed the problem as a failed engine control module, and a new one was installed into the vehicle.cost of repair was approximately $1,100.three months later (oct. 2011), the vehicle started exhibiting the same problems.returned to the same shop, and repairmen could not find problem, simply clearing the obd-ii codes in the computer.vehicle exhibited same symptoms once in november 2011 after a rain storm; no action was taken as vehicle did it only once.in december 2011, vehicle exhibited same problems four time during a 25-mile drive.codes revealed p0606, p0700, p1811.vehicle to be taken for a third time to repair shop to get this problem fixed.

Multiple episodes of car not starting and stalling.car actually lost all power and stopped running while i was driving.cars were able to swerve around me and an accident was avoided. I am pursuing lemon law.am very afraid to drive this car!

I was driving my 2004 saturn l300 at 55 mph.the car suddenly cut off.i was able to drift to the side of the road.i tried to restart the vehicle and it would not start.this has happened to me in a parking lot approximately 3 other times.i took the car to a mechanic and he said it may be the crankshaft position sensor.this could have caused a serious accident.

The low coolant light blinked on my 2004 l300 saturn in late june 2007. I took it to the service station to have the coolant level checked. The service manager said it was a little low but not by much. After he put more coolant in, the signal cleared for over a month before it came back on again in early august. I took it back again and the service manager suggested that there might be a leak. The signal came on shortly after this visit and remained on for a duration of 30 minutes, which prompted me to make a detour and head to saturn to have it checked out. I took it to saturn and they informed me that i had an oil cooler leak. It cost me $802 to repair. The car only has 33,000+ miles on it, and i get it serviced according to saturn's maintenance schedule for this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2004 saturn l300.while driving 60 mph, the engine stalled.the engine was still running, but the vehicle would not accelerate.the low power and engine warning indicator lights illuminated after the failure occurred.the vehicle was pulled over and restarted.the dealer replaced the ecm, but the failure continued.the dealer stated that the vehicle needed a new air sensor and they made the replacement.the failure mileage was 77,000 and current mileage was 82,000.

The car has continued to fail to start. It does not catch on the first try. Today it took four attempts to start. The car has been taken to the dealer twice and they keep telling us they can not find anything. The last time, the service engine light came on and stayed for over 2 hours. Car taken to dealer they kept several days and found nothing. There is something wrong with this car. I'm hoping it will not take my death or the death of someone else to find the root cause of the problem .

Car will hesitate and stall.the check engine light comes on the car will at times not be able to be driven due to the catalytic converter failing and clogging the exhaust system

- the contact's 2004 saturn l300 with an odometer reading of21000 miles, headlights, interior lights, and dash board lights flicker on and off while driving.the contact first noticed the failure in november of 2006, since the vehicle was driven mostly in the day time the failure may have been occurring previously. The contact took the vehicle to saturn of fishers in indiana, where after having the vehicle for two days he was told that a safety bulletin had been released about this issue and informed the contact that this is a normal condition for the vehicle.the contact believes this is a safety issue and may cause an accident.the contact is also worried that police may stop him due to the faulty lights.

While driving at nightheadlights flickered on and off intermittently. *sc

We just recently purchashed our new car. We were driving on the highway at night. The lights (head lights and dash lights) kept getting dim almost as if they were going to go out. We thought maybe we had a wire that had not been tightened or that had come lose. Other cars think we are blinking our lights at them. What happens if a big truck thinks we are giving him the "all clear to come over in front of me"? the car was taken in to the service dept and we were told that it was "intermittent dimming (flickering) of headlamps and/or instrument panel lighting-normal characteristic. This may occur because of transient current loads on the electrical system during normal vehicle operation" per the tsb (technical service bulletin). Why werent we told about this before we purchased the car?? the lights dont "flicker" they get dim to the point they are almost going out! so how can this problem be considered "normal"?so much for a new car!

While driving headlights flashed from bright to dim. This occurred every 30 seconds. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that what was happening with the headlights was normal. Consumerlater contacted the manufacturer, and they also said that what the vehicle was experiencing wasnormal.

I own a 2004 saturn l300 and my dad owns a 2002 saturn lw300 (wagon).we both had troubles with a leaking fuel pump which is a terrible fire hazard.there have been many recalls on the saturn ions with the same problem, but the l300 have not been recalled.2004 saturn - i had my fuel pump replaced on 5/23/2012 with 62,129 miles.i would parked the car and smell fuel so i decided to bring my car to my regular mechanic.the fuel was coming from the fuel pump towards the top of the pump.it cost me $881.01.at that time i thought i should have no problems with afuel pump for another 75 to 100k miles.i was driving on the highway doing about 55 to 60 mph and my car stalled out.at first i thought it was a computer glitch or just a bad sensor.next day same problem.my car stalled out on the highway.so i took the car back to my regular mechanic.at the end result it was a defective fuel pump again.my car was not getting enough fuel pressure when the car reached 50+ mph.the mechanic was very nice and didn't charge me for the part, but it cost me another $283.78 just for labor.between the first pump / second pump it happened within 22 months and 24,143 miles.i have spend $1165 between the first / second fuel pumps not counting my father.i definitely understand parts wears out as car ages.replacing two fuel pumps within 86k miles is unacceptable.i should be reimburse for gm negligence and i hoping you look into this so other drivers and cars do not catch fire and cause serious accidents on the highway.it is very scary when you are driving on the highway and your car stalls out.it is not fair and car manufactures do not want to help consumers like me until people gets killed and love ones loose families.if you have any questions or need me to clarify anything up, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Fuel pump on a 2004 saturn l300 cracked and release fuel and heavy gas smell into car making car un driveable. There is already a recall on another make of saturn for the same incident.

Gas filler pipe neck rusty and flaking. Could start leaking causing a fire and leaking on the ground if not fixed. Want to know where , how and how much to get the part. Saturn dealership said saturn has stopped making many parts and this is one. If starts leaking will not be ableto get sticker. Trying to talk with gm and at first said they could help but now just ask if it's fixed. Can not fix until i can get the part. Talking with ruby at gm 866-790-5700 ext 42627 case # [xxx] .thanks information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2004 saturn l300. The contact stated that while in reverse the gear shifter ceased and the vehicle failed to start-up. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic and it was determined that the shifter cable was detached. The vehicle was not repaired. A dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 155,000.

2004 vue purchased new, late 2004; currently has only 16,000 miles, serviced by the dealer.for the past est of 2000 miles it will devoid itself of power while making turns and going forward.it will not buck, but reduce the power.keep rolling and then very gradually pick up speed.dealer informed at last oil change,i was told to bring it in for a day to be checked.dealer will be contacted for loner car, i cannot sit and wait all day.car is necessary for transportation for wife who works. This is a safety hazard anytime the car is moving forward.

I own a 2004 saturn l300 sedan. On october 25, 2007, i was driving my car on the highway in the passing lane going about 65 to 70 mph andthe car stalls and the gas pedal shows no response.the car engine warning light comes on along with the service engine light and loss of power light on the dashboard.i had to crossover a lane and pull the car over.while putting the car in park the car shakes.i turn the ignition off and start the car again and i am able to go but the transmission shifts very hard.there were no precursor signs that the car was having problems.the car was towed to the saturn dealership, and they expressed that code p0606 showed up and that they had to replace the engine control module (ecm/pcm) because it was faulty.on january 31, 2008, i was driving on the freeway and the car stalled again while i was in the passing lane. I took the car to an auto parts store so that they could get a quick scan on the computer.again the code p0606 shows up.i had the gentleman print me out a copy of the code, for my own record.the receipt stated that the probable cause for the problem is a failed ecm.so i return to the saturn dealership to have them check up on the problem.later that day, they told me that they could not find the problem and then when i showed them that i had the codes read just before i came in, they had told me that "yes , that code came up, but that was an old code from before, so we just erased it". Even though i had proof that it was a new code, they ignored my concerns.on february 12, 2008, just 12 days after being in the shop, it happened again.i was driving down the highway and the car stalls while i am in traffic going about 65 mph.i again go to the auto store to obtain the receipts of what is wrong with the car.the same code comes up again p0606 (ecm/pcm fault).i take it to the dealership and the decide to replace to mass air sensor because that's what they think is wrong with it.

Car stalled while driving in traffic and would not restart. Car also failed to start on some mornings and also after filling at gas station. Its seems that this issue can go on for sometime between the times it happens.

Trouble with abs system.light came on, car was taken to dealer who finally determined it was the abs control unit.repair est. Over $1200.

While driving at any speed consumer applied the brakes andfront brakes pulsated.dealershipwas not notified.

A year ago, a grinding noise came from the steering when turning at low speeds. The dealership said they could find nothing wrong. I took it back to the dealership and they told me, while i was making the appointment, that it was the steering shaft.

Grinding noise from power steering while making turns. Had two mechanics look at the car and was told the rack and pinion would need to be replaced. Contacted dealership and was told it is a common failure in this model.

My trunk fills with water if i go through a car wash. I didn't notice for a while because i rarely use the trunk. The dealer said it was due to broken seals, it wasn't under warranty and would cost about 300.00 dollars. I don't have 300.00 dollars. The car has never been in a accident so there shouldn't be a problem with the seals under it.

The passenger side front bumper fell off.consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, andconsumer was told that vehicle had been involved in a collision.driver's side front loosened and was taped to the vehicle.

We have been having problems with the doors slamming us almost from the day we got the car.it is an lw 300.1 2004 saturn wagon.my small granddaughter, and a passenger have been hit by the door.my wife and i have been hit many times on the back, arm, and legs.the doors have two stop positions.it is not always possible to open the door to its widest position, and the other position does not provide enough room to enter and leave comfortably.therefore, if the door is not put in one of the two stop positions, it slams immediately into the person.we have felt pain and bruising.we feel lucky that there have been no serious injuries, but that could occur the next time the door "attacks".we have taken the car to the dealer several times but the car has not been fixed.both the dealer and the manufacturer claim that the car is performing as it was designed to do.that is the problem -- poor design.our other cars have and do stay open wherever we open them.

The contact owns a 2004 saturn l300.the tires were worn on the insides and were replaced three times.the vehicle would ride as normal and the failure was only visibly noticed.the dealer stated that the failure was caused by the rear springs and bolt kit.the failure mileage was 22,000 and current mileage was 46,000.

I have had problems with the vehicle stalling on numerous occasions while driving without warning, the last being on april 1, 2014, when i was almost rear-ended by another vehicle.i strongly believe that this particular make and model, being the l300, should be added to the recall list, as numerous complaints have been made by other drivers and still nothing is being done to alleviate any of the issues raised.i cannot comprehend why other vehicles of the same make, being a saturn, are being recalled, yet individuals owning the l300 experiencing theses same issues are being ignored.it is clearly apparent that numerous complaints have been and are being by individuals experience these problems which are blatantly being ignored.i strongly urge that this model, the l300 be added to the recall list.it should not be the responsibility of the owner for something that is so egregiously defective that was clearly known about for over 10 years.

While driving on the freeway 70 mph acceleration will drop down to 5 mph.dealership stated that there was something wrong with computer that threw the vehicle into idle mode.this problem also occurred in the owner's previous saturn model l200 2002. The cause was still undetermined.

The contact owns a 2004 saturn l300.the contact was driving approximately 20 mph and depressed the brakes very gently when the vehicle accelerated.the motored roared after accelerating. The vehicle crashed into a trailer that was in front of it. The contact then put the vehicle in neutral. The contact was able to drive in reverse after the crash occurred. The air bag did not deploy.the police were called and a police report was taken. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and repaired. The contact stated that the mechanic repaired the vehicle but never informed her what caused the failure. The failure mileage was 21000 and the current mileage was 23000.

I have a 2004 saturn l300.1 sedan with cruise control. A couple of times over the past years when using the cruise control and pressing the cruise control accelerate button, the button stuck in the accelerate position causing the car to accelerate until the cruise control was turned off by brake or switch. Knowing this can happen, i am careful using cruise control and have not reported it. With the current publicity about acceleration problems, i thought it should be reported. Better late than never. Thank you.

Speed may without warning, suddenly and rapidly increase while use of cruise control on short moderate to steep inclines.speed jumps up in an unsafe fashion.
