Had it towed back to dealer where no problems could be found, however the drive belt tensioner assembly was replaced.2 days later car wouldn't start again. Manufacturer's help line recommended changing oil from manufacturer's suggested 10w30 oil to 5w30 oil. Broke catalytic converter on 60 day old 2002 santa fe!
I have had my 2002 santa fe lx for only 60 days and the check engine light came on a week ago. When i called the service center they told me it would be at least a week till they could look at it, and that driving it with the light on wouldn't hurt it. Five days later the car would not shift out of first gear when going up any hill when in automatice mode.needless to say i took it straight to the garage...i just heard from the mechanic yesterday and my shifting problems apparently were caused from a boken catalytic converter! i can't imagine how this could be broke on a 60 day old car! so far i am not too impressed with the service record of the santa fe! i have already had it in the body shop to have a part of the rocker panel repainted because it was peeling. It started peeling after i had the car 1 week, and continued to progressively peel until the dealer agreed to paint it.
I am single and no one else has access to my car, i fuel it myself, and i have had the vehicle in for the engine light coming on, they stated the gas cap is not tight.i click it 4 times every time to make sure since they said it will cost $ 75.00 to reset it as it does not reset itself.this time when i took it in, the light came on then went off then came on again, so since it does not set itself and the cap was not loose (i checked first thing), then i do not see how they can see it is loose.i even asked them if maybe there was a crack in the cap or why it came loose, they said they did not know it was just loose.i think there is a sensor problem or gas cap crack or problem because the cap can not loosen itself nor can vapors escape when it is clicked 4 times and very tight and nooelse has access to my vehicle.
I have the electronic control hvac system in my sante fe.the air conditioning will work normal for a time period.then when it is turned on from the off position by using the "auto" mode it will sound like the air is blowing but only a slight amount of air will come out.if it is left on and in the high fan mode a dripping sound can be heard.the system will not reset itself until the vehicle has been turned off for a good length of time (sometimes hours).this is the second time i have experienced this same problem.it occurred last year (in july and august 2002) but was not fixed until october.the dealers remedy was to replace the temperature probe in the system.it took weeks to get the part in and by the time it was actually replaced the outside weather was too cold to properly test the system.it was obviously not the right fix because it is still happening this summer.the vehicle is going back again for repair.

Experienced delay and harsh shift into drive and reverse since 06 january 2004. Brought it to the dealer and parts were ordered.auto is not drivable and has been at the dealers shop since 02 february 2004.dealer says the part is on a "national back order.

There is vibration in driveline and on floor of vehicle, consumer is driving at more then 50 mph, contacted dealer, after two attempts dealer claims vehicle no longer has vibration but vibration still exist.
Grinding noise coming from front wheels.contacted dealership service but issue is taking long to be resolve.after checking nhtsa, realized there was a tsb on the issue(service bulletin # 0340002).manufacturer is obviously aware of the issue but not acting on the issue.
Right side seatbelts were put inincorrectly, they were put in backwards. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
The left rear passenger seatbelt does not lock into the buckle next to it , but locks into the center position buckle ( middle passenger buckle ).the buckle next to the left passenger states "center".when seatbelts are buckled the left and middle passengers belt and buckle have overlap. Ihave discussed this with the salesman and service department - their solution is to leave the plastic buckle retainer in place for the buckle next to the left rear passenger or comment its korean ; as if this is an acceptable manufacturer's defect.
Front brakes squealing, noise goes away when brake pedal push.less then 13kmiles.service manager says this is not unusual for the santa fe.*nlm

My son was driving at 25mph, the car accelarated on it's own. He almost hit a tree. He braked, but it would stop accelerating. He put it in neutral and with the foot on the brake, he pulled the emergency brake and the car stopped. When he out it in park, he started it again and the engine raced above 7with out touching accelarator. He could have got killed. We had the car towed.i
This brand new santa fe leaked oil froma seal from the front tire all over my brand new concrete garage floor. I have asked the dealer at the time i phoned them with the problem to please take this car back that i do not want a unsafe car and feel that a car that breaks down in less than forty eight hours of owning is a real problem. They at kelly told me this request would not be filled and yet the owner mike kelly told me how my lifes priorty's are messed up that i let something like this upset me and which helped ruin my holiday's with the stress of worrying about a new car and a car payment of 800.00 and paying for insruance and yet not a car to drive. He said that is why the hyundai company provides a really nice warrenty. I feel as they should have to take this car back.

There is a skid plate that is missing from the front wheel drive , this could cause a fracture to oil pan if any debris would stuck it. The vehicles with four wheel drive have a skid plate, but front wheel drive vehicles don't. The dealer has been contacted.*nlm

While travelling at 65 mph on a highway (straight up an incline), front left wheel and tire became detached from the hub. Wheel and tire remained intact after separation from hub and bounced down the highway, indicating tire pressure was maintained enough to bounce high in the roadway.upon inspection, lug stud bolts were missing from the hub.there was also a crack in the hub through one of the lug stud bolt holes.the police checked the road for any hazards which might have caused the problem, but none were found.driver experienced extremely short duration of inconsistency of vehicle handling immediately prior to wheel separation.
A noise generated from the left rear of the vehicle.
Noisewas coming from left rear side due torear suspension failure.
Recall no. #03v520000 concerning tire pressure label:the driver'sside front tire was completely bald.consumer felt that the baldness was a direct result of improper tire pressure. Manufacturer insisted that they were not responsible for the wear of the tire.

I have detailed information on what i believe is a cover-up by the hyundai corporation regarding the 2002 hyundai sante fe.the problem was noticed the day after i bought the vehicle.i've had my vehicle in for service at least 4 timesfor the following problem:when i start the vehicle up every morning, the rpm's race to over 2000 and declines slightly to about 1500 and stays at this speed for about 2 minutes.when i pull from a parking space (without touching the gas pedal), the speedometer hover between 10 and 15 miles an hour, again, without touching the accelerator.as a result of this very high "idling" problem, i believe it is a very real danger to not only the drivers of these vehicles but any possible pedestrians or property that may be struck.the hyundai corporation denies this is a problem and say it is very common for this vehicle.when i ask for details regarding their testing they refuse to send it to me. I have detailed information (names, dates times and places) concerningwhat i believe should be a "recall" but is being covered up by hyundai.please contact me for more detailed information. Thanks.

I own a 2002 hyundai santa fe.this past week a rock (approximately the size of a baseball) fell off of an oncoming truck and hit my front windshield on the passenger side.my concern is that the rock came completely through the windshield, hit the dashboard, & landed on the passenger side floor.fortunately my daughter who was seated in the front passenger seat saw it coming & in a split second was able to cover her face & lean towards the driver's side.if that rock had hit her it would have very seriously injured her or worse.i am very concerned that the rock came completely through the windshield & wonder if their is a defect in the santa fe.the glass technician thatrepaired the windshield said that rock should never have gotten through & he also said that the he fixes a great number of santa fe windshield.i really think that this needs to be looked into.i have emailed hyundai & they basically said they would enter it into that database.that will not solve this problem.we were very lucky in this situation, but the next person may not be.i will also be contacting the dealer where i purchased the vehicle to inform them.thank you for taking the time to read my concern.*nlm
The windshield has began to crack from the lower right-hand corner (passenger's side) up about 16" in an "s" shaped pattern. There is -no- indication of a rock or other item hitting the windshield. I have been told by the dealership (fairfax hyundai, fairfax, va) that it is the result of a rock -but- there is -no_ impact crater to suggest this. When questioned about "stress fractures" i was told -those- occur from the "inside-out" and that this wasn't a stress fracture... I find that to be b.s.
The windshield has begun to crack from the lower left hand corner (driver's side) up about 12" in an "s" shaped pattern.there is no indication of a rock or other item striking the windshield.it came up out of nowhere!*nlmthanks,l. Chase

Lug stud bolts failed on one wheel. When checked due to noise from that wheel three of five bolts were broken off. I tried to tighten on of the two remaining nuts, thinking the nuts may have just come loose, and the bolt came off showing about 10% of the bolt remained, the remainder having already broken.
