1999 pontiac sunfire burst into flames immediately following loud clunk in engine while driving on expressway.vehicle is totaled.spark plug fell to ground as fire started.*nlm

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac sunfire. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated. The contact was able to safely maneuver to the shoulder and shut the vehicle off. The vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer for diagnosis. The dealer stated that they had to replace the ignition switch. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 04v036000 (electrical system). The failure and the current mileages were 86,000.

The air conditioning compressor pump (a/c pump) comes into contact with the (1999) oem lower radiator hose (hose), denting the hose and wearing a hole in the hose over time. This condition is worse when front struts and/or engine mounts become worn. Initial leak of coolent is only detectable by low fluid level over extended period of time (apporximately 6 months to a year): no wetness on the hose or pooling of coolent fluid under the vehicle is detectable prior to a larger hole being worn into the hose. Prior to larger hole being worn into hose, coolent loss is in vapor form, but not in a sufficient amount to be seen. Once the hole in the hose becomes large enough to bedetected by fluid pooling under the vehicle, the coolent fluid will come in contact with the powertrain control module (pcm) and cause failure of the pcm. The pcm controls major engine and braking functions. A complete failure of the pcm will cause loss of braking control (via abs) and shut down of engine (causing loss of steering control). There is also the possibility of causing a electric short in the 12 volt circuit resulting in a fire.please note that "after market" manufacturers replacement hose is redesigned to help prevent contact between a/c pump andthe hose. At the time of this complaint it is unknown whether the oem hose has been redesign to prevent contact with the a/c pump.

During normal operation of a 1999 pontiac sunfire, 4dr, 2.2 liter engine, automatic transmission. The wiring harness at the drivers door frame, at the connection of the underdash harness and the rear of vehicle harness shorted, causing the insulation to catch fire. This situation shorted other circuits in the harness causing braking problems with the anti-lock system.vehicle was able to be stopped safely, and the driver, with good samaritan assistance was able to extinguish the fire.fire rendered the hood latch inoperative. This prevented the driver from disconnecting the battery ground cable, to prevent further damage and/or fire.

The instrumental panel on my 1999 pontiac sunfire recently started functioning erratically i.e. Gauges (gas gauge, temperature gauge, speedometer) would start fluctuating wildly. Local pontiac dealership has diagnosed the vehicle as having a defective (or burned out) instrumental panel cluster. I was told that this component was not covered under any type of lifetime warranty and that the repairs would cost $472.31.in researching this problem on the internet, it appears to be systemic among late 1990 to early 2000 pontiac vehicles. From a safety standpoint, it is a dangerous circumstance to be driving 70-75 mph on the highway and to have your instrument panel start malfunctioning.pontiac should be forced to recall these defective instrument panel clusters and repair them at no charge.

The battery acid ate at the metal bolts of the battery causing the postive connector to completely come off ( bolt, cable, and all). (ac delco battery). *mj

Consumer states that the battery leaked acid, that completely corroded the positive terminal post.acid drippedon wire that releases hood now hood is inoperable. Nlm

The original battery that came with my car has failed. The positive terminal post has completely corroded and fell off. Also the cable that runs to that post has melted.

Generator light keeps coming on. Rear and front brakes squeak.

Horn has never worked since i bought last month.

My headlights do not stay on. They turn off when i use my turn signal, or if i hit a bump. The hi-beams and drl's are fine, it's just the regular headlights. Also my engine shows that it is overheating on my temp. Guage, but does not act like it. When the a/c is turned on, it returns to a normal level. Another thing is my airconditioning line has a hole in it from another hose rubbing up against it. I think it's either my steering hose or radiator hose. When i turn left my car makes an awful grinding noise.

Two park plug wires needed to be replaced within 30000miles. While drivingvehicle stalled out. Contacted dealer, and the dealer has replacedwires, but problem still occurs.

Ignition circuit thermal events regarding 1999 pontiac sunfire. ***no answer required***. *mrthe consumer stated there is no service dealer near his home to get the recall taken of. ( recall #04v036000).

Consumer receivedrecall04v036000concerning ignition switch failure. Dealer performed recall repairs and chargedconsumer $500.00however,the vehicle continued to have starting problems. Dealer tried to repair the vehicle three more times and charged $500.00each time a repair was done.

The wiring harness is shorting out which has made my ignition switch short out and my computer. Pontiac has issued a service bulletin. Since there is enough people with this problem they should issue a recall and not just stop at a bulletin. This could have made possibly made my car catch on fire. I feel that this is a hazard. This is going to be costing me right about $1000, this is a rough estimate from the mechanic.

I was purchasing this used car from a dealer. They replaced the ignition assembly 3 times. The car would mysteriously shut off, the ignition assembly would not allow the key to be removed and multiple times this happened. I lost allotof money i put on the car as it became obvious they could not fix it and i had to let them take it back with no refund to me.........they said at the dealer that i was lucky that i didn't have a fire.

1999 pontiac sunfire, vehicle caught fire.while driving, the consumer felt a thump and began to loose power.once the consumer stopped, he noticed fire was coming from under the front end of the vehicle. Ohio traffic crash report # 10-0699-90.updated 04/14/10

Check engine and air bag lights have been lit for about 1 year and local dealer was unable to find problem or fix.vehicle recently hit a bump and driver airbag deployed without further incident.speed about 30 mph with another adult in passenger seat and infant in rear-facing seat in rear.

I was driving the car just after i purchased it and became cold so i turned on the heater and within 30 seconds smoke filled the car. I thought the engine was on fire. It smelled like burning oil or gas. I called delphi about recalls and before i could finish a sentence the man cut me off saying that the only recall on my car was for the o ring on the fuel. He said if i have a 1999 and that was defective i would be spewing fuel everywhere. I described what happened and he just cut me off.my brother purchased the car from a dealer for over 3,000 dollars and i have no idea what the odometer is suppose to be because he said the dealer told him to bring it back and he would fix it. After he paid the dealer he contacted the dealer and the dealer told him that he will contact my brother when he can fix it. According to the odometer it has a little over 23,000 miles. 1999 pontiac sunfire burst into flames immediately following loud clunk in engine while driving on expressway.vehicle is totaled.spark plug fell to ground as fire started.*nlm

The vehicles head gasket blew and destroyed the entire engine and other components. *nlm

While traveling and making a turn vehicle stalled without indicaton. Also, while in reverse vehicle will not back up. This is intermittent. Dealer has been notified.

My car has made front end noise and now engine check light is coming on and off. The engine run at a rough idle.

Vehicle continually stalling.

Engine shuts offalot..when in referse;going around turns...randomly

While driving on expressway/street,wheels would wobble. Driver had some control.driver's seat fails to move forward when latch is released for adjusting.also, shock absorbers needed to be replaced due to knocking noise.2 weeks after having oil replaced for leaking, it needed to be replaced again.

While driving 55 mph the idle pulley failed. As a result, engine blew out.

I brought my vehicle in because it stalled several times for no reason. I was told there was nothing wrong with it. The day i picked it up it stalled again. Aproximately one month after the original visit i discovered that the catylytic converter was not functioning but was told this probably did not cause the stalling.

I had the brakes serviced at 4 different pontiac dealers in two different states for the same thing.. My brakes did not work i kept telling them they say nothing is wrong with them "you are crazy" they told me so after 6 months of this it got old...i went to midas a free inspection by the time i left i had spent 150 dollars for new brakes because my rear brakes were never adjusted it left the lit and the plant without ever being ajusted or aligned so for months i was riding around with no brakes scary thought huh?so all the weight of 4 brakes was being put on one side till it wore down to nothing...that woukd explain why i was complaining about it sliding in the rain......if you have the fan or a/c in in the car it stinks.( when starting the car) and thats just the beginning

I have 1999 pontiac sunfire and i have had nothing but problems with the headlights. One is that i have no highbeams and the headlights go out after driving it for awhile, the driverside light flashes on and off from time to time i have talked to a mechanic about this problem and they said it was the headlight harness. I went to the local junk yard got a harness and it solved the problem but just recently it happened again.

My low beam headlights will not work.i have replaced the combination switch on the steering column twice.each time the lights will work for about 6 months then they quit.the dealer said there could be a problem with the front wiring harness but a new harness is $600.i believe gm has a problem with their design and should replace the defective harness.

Low beam headlights failed to operate.daytime running lights operate erratically (sometimes blinking rapidly).i replaced both bulbs and drl relay.i took the vehicle to the dealer hoping that he would be most efficient and lowest cost troubleshooter based on his familiarity with this model.calls to multiple michigan dealers acknowledge the existence of this issue on 1998 and 19'99 sunfire/cavaliers.root cause is corrosion of wiring withinthe wire harness.it took 6 hours ($500 worth of labor, $0 parts!) to locate and correct a broken wire within its insulation and within the harness.unfortunately, gm does not deem this to be an issue which is worthy of providing reimbursement assistance to its customers. Of course, headlights are an important safety component of avehicle- and i suspect many other 1998 and 1999 cavalier/sunfire owners recognize this fact. A search of this odi database reveals others;ref odi id #10053346, 562403, 8009447, 831751, 718361 and 8008072.i am certain that many, many others go unreported to the odi.i encourage the nhtsa to investigate this condition and encourage the manufacturer to address this product defect- if not proactively, at least when it manifests itself in its customers vehicles.

Starting about two months ago, the headlights have turned off when going over small bumps in the road.they come right back on.i'm concerned about driving a car with headlights that turn themselves off.so far, the dealer has not been much help.they tell me they "need to see the failure" before they fix the car.possibly related to this, the left headlights don't always come on right away when i turn them on.

My headlights do not stay on. They turn off when i use my turn signal, or if i hit a bump. The hi-beams and drl's are fine, it's just the regular headlights. The indicator light bulb in the dash board module cannot be replaced after burning out. This renders the odometer inoperative and unreadable.

Consumer has the same problem as mentioned innhtsa 99v21800 regarding interior lighting.these vehicles do not comply with requirements of fmvss no. 101, "control location, identification, and illumination."the instrument panel back lighting may not function after adjusting the interior light intensity. Dealer stated sorry this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Consumer had usedchildsafety lock, but could not be taken off, and door stayed locked. Consumer was unable to opendoor frominside.consumerwasconcerned forchildren inside.

When driving vehicle and odometer speed is 70mph,it will then drop down to 65mph on its own, while still traveling 70mph.have taken vehicle to dealer and was informed the busings were slipping.

Ever since we got the car the odometer scrambles and goes off and on. Usualy in cold or hot weather. When it comes on it goes back to the right mileage.

While traveling and making a turn vehicle stalled without indicaton. Also, while in reverse vehicle will not back up. This is intermittent. Dealer has been notified.

We have a 1999 pontiac sunfire with 32445 miles on it. The transmission, 3rd & 4th gears, have gone bad. I would expect to recieve more mileage than this out of a properly serviced transmission. This occurred within 220 miles of having the fluid replaced in hte transmission.

Transmission jumps into forward when idling with shifter in park position.

Vehicle jumped from park to reverse while engine was idling. Vehicle was parked on level ground. Damage was estimated at three thousand dollars, driversustained injuries toarm and shoulder. Please provide further details.

It just won't frequent downshift. Will set up appointment at dealer.

Gears no longer work because the shifter cable that leads to the transmission went out of its housing while driving down the road.*la

The driver side seat belt retracted without cause.the consumer had to unbuckle the belt to release it.

Consumerhad a front end collision and seat belt anchor broke.

Convertible top has been leaking, first noticed it when floor inside of vehicle showed rust. Also, bolts of seats were rusted. Dealer has tried to repair 8 times, was unable to do so.consumer stated manufacturer has refused to fix vehicle since 10-1-2001.

While driving on expressway/street,wheels would wobble. Driver had some control.driver's seat fails to move forward when latch is released for adjusting.also, shock absorbers needed to be replaced due to knocking noise.2 weeks after having oil replaced for leaking, it needed to be replaced again.

While driving driver's side seat collapsed.dealer has been notified.the reclining mechanism on the driver's seat broke twice and fixed by the dealership. Consumer stated that the seat frame had cracked but the dealership did not replace it because of the second time it broke.

While driving 35 mph and going through an intersections another vehicle hit consumer's vehicle fromside where child was sitting inrear passenger's seatbackflew back, and child fell through and out of trunk ,and died on impact.child's shoes were left in car. Driver died on impact.please provide further information.

My brakes have failed on me on several occasions, my vehicle will not stop when the brakes are applied.they, barnett auto group have replace the brakes system twice and i am now having a serious problem with the anti-lock brake kicking in almost every time i come to a slow stop. I can hear the anti-lock valve behind the dash poping off at the time my vehicle doesn't brake it keeps on gliding like if it was hydroplaning.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac sunfire. While driving at an unknown speed down a hill during rainy weather, the brakes locked when engaged. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that there was brake dust which caused the failure. The dust was removed but the failure occurred again two weeks later during rainy conditions. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The current and failure mileages were unknown. The vin was unavailable.

Anti lock brake system malfuctioned, everything locks up as ifvehicle was being stolen.contacted dealer.

Generator light keeps coming on. Rear and front brakes squeak.

Anti- lock brakes are very messed up, causing me to almost have several wrecks, have contacted dealer, says that it is not a problem, but has been in shop 4 times to be fixed.

Rear brakes keep coming out of adjustment.when i stop or hit the breaks just right they don't catch and i tend to keep going forward then stop. Almost got in a couple of accidents, but i got luckly.tried changing the hardware, still have the same problem.brakes squeal and grind. It's not safe.tired of figuring out what do about them.it's been on going for almost 3 years.

Brakes don't want to work right, soft pedal; bad odor went air or fan is running;doors squeak:ungoing problem since a month after i got the car.

The drivers side front brake pad wore continuously and caused a roaring noise on the front drivers side. *nlm

Rotors in the front frequently have to be changed due tofront hubs being too small. Original lugs were damaged becauserotors didn't fit right.vehicle was pulling toside and making a popping noise. My car has made front end noise and now engine check light is coming on and off. The engine run at a rough idle.

This failure causes cars to surge to left or right for no reason. My step-daughter has the same problem with her 1998 chevy cavalier. It apears to be a pump or rack failure.

Consumer is having a problem with steering control.when making left or right turns, steering wheel will exhibit resistance in the intended direction, but then turn easily in the opposite direction.this causes consumer to "over correct" steering affecting vehicle control. Ts

Paint is starting to wear off on the top of my car by the moon roof and around the outside edge of the drivers side door; also the spoiler is becoming discolored and the same, the paint is wearing off.

My car has made front end noise and now engine check light is coming on and off. The engine run at a rough idle.

Mileageflashes on and off like there is a short and air bag light stays on the whole time the car is running and while driving.:( clunking in front end possibly by tires? like the shocks or whatever

While driving on expressway/street,wheels would wobble. Driver had some control.driver's seat fails to move forward when latch is released for adjusting.also, shock absorbers needed to be replaced due to knocking noise.2 weeks after having oil replaced for leaking, it needed to be replaced again.

The vehicle began to shake and make a noise, consumer pulled over to see tire was ripped of the rim. The consumer experienced another tire blow out a few months later.(general tire p195/65r15, tubeless radial)

Rattle noises come from the center dash/defroster area at all times, this problem is evident at low/high speeds, while driving over bumps, the dealer has applied shim, insulated contact points, tightened steel brace, adjusted glove box door and replaced the entire dash but the rattle still exist.nlm

Since i bought the car, the odometer blinks and scrambles at various times, and when it is working the mileage is correct.also, whenever i turn on my hazard lights, my anti-lock brake system light comes on and will stay on until the car has been off for awhile.lastly, the vehicle has always made a grinding noise when i turn left, or accelerate uphill and i have had 3 motor mounts replaced and taken it to 3 dealers and 2 auto shops and nobody can seem to find a problem!

Rear brakes keep going out of adjustment.i have to get them readjusted almost every week.first started in febuary 2001.since then especially in the last 1.5 - 2 yrs. Have to get adjustment done every week to two weeks.there has been several time most on fwys were i had to stop suddenly and the breaks did not catch.i kept going fwd.luckily i was far enough back from vehicle in front of me that i did not hit them.during rainy days it's even worse.

Noise over speed bumps is at a low speed easing over them.

The instrument panel reflects at eye level on the front windowshield, i understand some reflections comes with all cars, but when driving at night, you have a virtual reality effect.you can see the complete instrument panel, especially on dark un-lite roads.the final answer from grossinger manager was to turn the panel light down.the man is a complete fool, because the only way to stop the night reflection is reduce the panel light off.the reflection also occurs during the day, at certain angles the sun places the instrument panel right in you face.a little history, when i bought the car, the instrument panel did not reflect at night, if it reflected at day, i did not notice it, you only saw the defrost vent, a some of the dash, nothing to worry about.i had them install an alarm system.since then, the problem started.when asked if the dash was in correct, the told me it was properly adjusted.when asking about the reflection, they said pontiac specialist saw this as normal, the most a flaw in design, but nothing harmful, and nothing they can do.grossinger major comment is that we are liable for the reflection, the alarm was installed correctly and the problem belong to pontiac.i lived with this problem for a year, i returned togrossinger to have warranty work done, plus to give them another chance with the reflection.i was told it was a pontiacproblem and they had no solution.my concern is what is the truth.

Hit a brick in the road at 30 mph and bent wheel severly. The center of the wheel is welded to close to the outside. It has no support on the inside to preventthis from happening, and causing a tire to blow out and possibly causing a wreck. The wheel is very poorly made.
