The contact owns a 1997 pontiac sunfire.after it rained for approximately 3-4 days, the contact noticed standing water in the front and rear passenger side of the vehicle.she started the vehicle and noticed that all of the instrument panel lights were illuminated.after several days of allowing the vehicle to dry out, every instrument panel light, with the exception of the air bag light, dimmed.the dealer stated that they would not inspect the vehicle for less than $350.the contact no longer drives the vehicle because she fears for her life due to the defect.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 70,000. I am looking to see if these recalls had been fixed by the previous owner. No sfety defec tlisted.

Received recall notice (#98v146000), air bag. Took vehicle to dealer. Mechanic refused to do work according to recall. No explanation given.

I bought my car in oct 1999 since i have had 3 recalls.none of those are the other problems i have experienced or repaired already. In 2000 i had to replace the front wheel beearing in the passenger side that was in bad condition,in 2001 i had to replace the rear strut mounts becasue the were dried and cracked, i month ago my wipers broke a pin and clip broke and they stop in the up position. Now my window on my drivers side will not go up or down i have been having problemswith it for about a year now. My daughter in laws rack and pinion just went out in her 96 sunfire and she didnt recieive a recall but i did. I loved this car wene i got it but i will never recomend it to anyone or purchase another one

Tried to start the ignition but it would't, which was really odd considering my car hasn't given me any real trouble.i took the key out of the ignition and closed the door and it tried to start without the key.i went in the house to call a ride to work and heard the radio going.i looked out to see who it was and saw a fire going in my car.i called the fire department to put the fire out.afterwards, they said that my airbag deployed into the steering column causing the fire.

In less than 1 year i have taken my car to have it repaired 6 times for what i feel is the exact same problem! my engine stalls when i am coming to a stop or after being on the interstate and it idles rough. I have had my catalytic converter replaced twice in the past year, fuel sensor replaced, spark plugs, coil, wire to the ignition module replaced. My car still runs rough and stalls while driving on interstate, when idling in traffic, and when i come to a complete stop. This needs to be investigated. I have spent over $2,000 in repairs and tow fees. This is very unsafe.

While starting vehicle, steering wheel started smoking. Vehicle refuses to start. Consumer states that the ignition began to smoke after vehicle was jump started, ignition switch burned and melted and burned out the battery, consumer has ignition switch for inspection.

My brother owns a 1997 pontiac sunfire with only 47,000 miles on it and the engine seized (needing engine replaced estimated cost $3,500). I understand the car is about 6 years old but the vehicle is driven minimal miles. Gm dealership did a diagnosis costing us $289 and concludedper the invoice: perform tear down on engine - remove valve cover and found valve spring on #2 cylinder broken - remove cylinder head and found head of valve had gone through top of piston and scored cylinder wall. The dealership quoted us cost of the following: $3,250 for a brand new one with a 3 year/75,000 mile warranty or $1,400 for a used engine with 88,000 miles on it (no warranty) or $1,600 for a used engine with 62,000 miles on it (no warranty). Now, i scratch my head and wonder how gm justifies us paying almost $1,500 of a used engine with more miles on the engine than the engine we already have at 47,000 miles that does not work. After three weeks we had the vehicle repaired a reputable auto service for $1,089. The auto service suggested taking photos of a part in the engine noted above to be defective. The auto service said this part should never have broken on a vehicle with only 47,000 miles. We informed gm customer service of this defective part and told them about the pictures but gm has done nothing to address this issue. I thought gm might look further into investigation of the defective part but no. I do not want this to happen to someone else.is this a realistic expectation to have this costly repair at 47,000 miles?can we do anything else? *la

The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic informed the consumer that the oil filter had a hole in it which caused the oil leak.the mechanic also informed the driver that the motor mounts needed to be replaced due to corrosion. Engine surges intermittently, no problems could be found during repair dates.

Engine head piston bolt broke which resulted in the damage of the engine piston.all mechanics i spoke to said that it could only happen if i was going at speeds of excess of over 100 m.p.h. Which i wasn't because i stopped the car quickly enough to stop further piston damage.if i didn't, the mechanics told me i might have had to buy a new engine or so they told me.people tell me that the engine piston bolt breaking is a very, very rare occurence and that it could be a manufacturer defect.please look into it so i can be absolutely sure if it was the company's fault or mine in having to pay $800.00 for something i should or should not have paid.thank you.

The lights quit working and found out by putting something behind the dimmer switch that the lights would come back on.took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the switch in april 2000 however in dec 2000 the same switch has failed again.i have contacted pontiac customer service and was told that due to the mileage it was my resposibility to repair.due to the fact that i paid approximately $170.00 in april 2000 i feel that the manufacturer should be able to aid in getting this repaired at no charge to me.

I have been having problems with my headlights not long after i bought the car.only the daytime running lights work on the car. Now recently, the daytime running lights are not working. So then i have no lights. I know there is a problem with the switch on the steering column. I turn the switch a little harder and the lights come on. But, once i let go. They go back to drl's. My brights do not work as well. To have more than drl's. I have to settle for them for hold the switch back to have regular lights and brights. I think this is very dangerous to myself and family and to others on the road if my lights go out and someone ends up hitting me. Especially since my car is black also.

I have a 97 pontiac sunfire.it has a faulty fuel injector which leaks all over my engine.the fumes blow into my vents and is hard to bear.i also have three small children and don't want them even in the car but it is all i have to drive.i called dealers and they said it has nothing to do with safety or any recall, but the car is only six years old and in great mechanical shape.it has been taken care of so i do not see why the fuel injector should be faulty already.i feel as though gm wont help me at all.this is apart that should not be bad so soon.thanks.*la

Ruptured fuel tank, causing a loss of fuel, because of loss of fuel had to call the fire dept.

Transmission leakage; also noisy abs brakes.

Warning light on dashboard indicates when to upshift at a time when transmissionshould not ube pshifted; does not indicate when it should upshift, could cause an accident due to traveling too slow for gear, according to dealer, light indicator is programmed into computer.

Gm does not care about the safety of its consumers. When driving my 1997 pontiac sunfire through any water, even a small 3-5 foot wide puddle of only 1-2 inches deep water, the power steering belt becomes wet and starts squealing loudly.the power steering then becomes extremely difficult to turn and very unresponsive. This has happened numerous times for over a year.don bohn autoplex says they have contacted pontiac and also a gm manufacturers representative.don bohn reports to me that pontiac and gm do not have a fix for the problem at this time and said nothing is to be done. It has been said to me by don bohn management and also a pontiac representative on their 1-800 service number that this condition of the power steering is a 'characteristic' of the 1997 'j' body type cars of gm and there is no present fix for the problem. Service check by dealer found left and right lower a frames and the stablizer links plus both front tireshad to be replaced before an alignment could be done. Est cost $350. Upon investigation when speaking with maintenance personnel i discovered that this is a high failure item. The personel informed me that they replaced these control arms all the time. They know it is a very poor design and causes problems with customers. The service manager informed that there has not been a recall as to date concerning this item. The service manager said he can replace just the bushing , but that would not last but a short time and that i would be back again. I have examined the car myself and i am not impressed with the design of this control arm. I do agree with the service manager that it is a poorly designed control arm and should be recalled for proper redesign and repair.
