We have had this car for about 2 years, and have had problems since the beginning.first thing was the cooling fan.it quit working about 6 months after we boughtthe car.we had that fixed then started having other electrical problems.the brake lights would work here and there, the turn signals would work one day and not the next, now they don't work at all. The abs light would flash off and on and the brake light would come on also.we know that filing this complaint will not fix the problems we are having with the car, we just wanted to make it known that we will never buy another pontiac due to the problems we are having with this one.thank you for your time.

Strange noise came from ignition when vehicle was cranked.engine continued to run after ignition was switched off.after several attempts to switch off, the engine shut down and smoke came from the ignition area.smoking stopped, but later vehicle was found with the interior engulfed inflames.

In fulfillment of recall 02008-s, a gm dealership claims that replacement of the starter wiring harness will destroy the terminal on the solenoid, resulting in the required replacement of both the solenoid and starter motor. Both parts are in good working order but gm will not cover the cost of this damage, approx $260. In short, a rusty terminal will probably break when removed. For this, gm wants to sell a new starter with solenoid at full price. I have confirmed the likelihood of the damage with an independent mechanic. Gm refused me directly upon appeal. This is a very important recall, though relatively simple to implement. The car is only 7 years old. Gm should be required to cover the full cost of implementation, without profiting on an otherwise unnecessary replacement of expensive components. Gm could replace just the solenoid or perhaps even just the terminal. The wire lead could be properly spliced without terminal removal. This possibility (or perhaps probability) was not mentioned in the recall notice or in converations with the dealer prior to the recall work. I am arranging to have the solenoid alone replaced for approx. $140. I suggest that gm be ordered to reimburse customers for this and other costs required to implement the recall fully and to cover them directly from this point forward. I would not be surprised to learn that gm has already installed a significant number of new starters at owners' expense.
While driving the car stopped accelerating.please describe.

Head gasket problem on a 1995 sunfire.seems that this is a systemic problem on this engine. 2.2 liter. *nlm

Engine head gasket is losing antifreeze, consumer has to fill up every 2 weeks, and vehicle over heats.
I have never heard of a head gasket going bad five times.
The head gasket failed and antifreeze leaked onto the engine.
In 1995 i bought my pontiac sunfire and scince i have had it i have had to put 3 head gaskets on it and one head the first 1 was replaced at 36,275 in 1998 and at that time they need to replace the pistons and rings do to this problem. The next time was in2000 with 64,915 mile at that ime it was just the head gasket then the 3rd time they replaced the head gasket and the head which was caused by replacing the head gasket so many times this time i had to.
Head gasket leaked, and was replaced at 87000 miles under special policy #98054.at 112,800 miles, head gasket failed again, and needs to be replaced again, this time not under warranty.this should be a recall , as the gaskets are obviously defective, and general motors is very aware of this problem in these vehicles, according to the technical service bulletin.
Torque converter clutch failure caused a vibration in the drivetrain from 35mph to 50mph. The dealer suggested disconecting the clutch as the cheapest way to stop the problem. The car has since lost about 3mpg. This was not the right way to fix this problem.the head gasket started leaking around 55,000 miles. A pontiac service manger told me it would cost about $500.00 to fix the leak,,or i could put some "bars leak' in the coolant to seal up the leak. Again this is the cheap way out for a while, but not the correct way to fix the problem.the dealerships i dealt with already knew that these problems were found in this model car,but stopped short of saying it was a manufacturing problem.
The cylinder head gasket had to be replaced, consumer later found out that the part was defective and manufacturer would have fixed it free of charge, however consumer has not been able to get a response from manufacturer regarding reimbursement.

Went for an inspection on my 1995 sunfire and was notified of a blown head gasket.
The antifreeze light illuminated, and the vehicle hesitated, consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and the problem was diagnosed as a bad head gasket.ts
The first failure of the head gasket was on aug 12, 1996 with 12,453 miles.pontiac will not recall the 2.2 liter (iron) duke) engine, nor are they willing to replace the engine.the warranty states it will be covered for 7years/100,000 miles, but what happen after that???the head gaskets only last on the average for 15 months.

The dates are estimates.the first problem was the gasket that was bad and was replaced under warranty.the second problem was the engine head cracking and the internal parts failing.the manufactuar was contacted without any avail of getting any help.the dealer where i had the repairs done stated he couldnt tell what caused the problem of the engine.my file number with gm pontiac is 00017728.the diagnostic guess on the bill was #1 main and rod bearing came apart.engine head cracked at # 3 spark plug area.losing coolant at that location.service was performed at billy navarre chevrolet.showing billing date of 1-31-2000
Coolant leaked from crack in engine gasket.
Engine block is made out of cast iron and head is made out of aluminum, and they heat atdifferent temperatures, causing head gasket to leak anti freeze. Pontiac issued special policy for this defect.pontiac will not fix due to vehicle having over 100000 miles.
After vehicle was repaired under recall forpcm, condition of vehicle worsened.since repair, dealer concluded thathead gaskets need to be replaced. The head gasket blew up first and then the pcm failed.after the repair was done on both, the vehiclee runs horrible.

Head gasket leaked coolant and was replaced at 44,941 miles.it started leaking again at 54,313 and had to be replaced. Pontiac won't cover it because the car is more than 7 years old and dealer won't cover it because it was more than one year when it had to be replaced the second time.what's the problem with this head gasket anyway??

The motor in this car has blown on me twice with no warning running as smooth as can be and just boom the motor goes, the second time it happend it was sitting in my driveway with the ac on cooling down the inside and it just blew up.i think gm should give me a new car for free.this one has been a lemon.
Vehicle caught on fire.
Any time the car is started, either cold or warm start, the motor has a very irratic idle, comes close to stalling, and gives off very strong exhaust fumes.the problem lasts for 1-3 minutes, during which the car is unable to be driven.until this time has elapsed, the motor is unresponsive to any throttle input.if i attempt to drive the vehicle, the problem worsens, and eventually stalls.after normal operating temperatures have been reached, the problem seems to disappear.i have had this problem for about two years now, and can not seem to get a straight answer from gm, or any of the local dealers as to the cause.i have spoken with other owners of the same model sunfire, and 95% of them have had or are having the same problem, and have also been told by local dealers that the problem does not show up on any of the diagnostic equipment.there are no recalls for this problem, and only one tsb issued, which i have been told, does not correct the problem.

Problem: knocking noise heard from front suspension when going over bumps. I have had the car inspected by three different auto repair shops, including the dealer where the car was purchased. The dealer said he would start with the front strut and mount (no garantee that the problem will be corrected). I have received a total of three different diagnosis over the last two weeks. These include, the lower tie rod, the rack and pinnion steering system and a front strut and mount. Since i can't get consensus, i have not had the problem corrected as yet. If i repaired the components they said were defective, it would cost me in excess of $1500. All the auto shops have told me this is not a safety concern and that the component(s) will not fail catastrophically. I'm not necessarily convinced. The noise is very disturbing.this condition has only been audible for about 1 month. Your database indicates that others have had the same complaint (see service bulletin no. Gm53-32-02). Do you know if general motors has recalled any of these vehicles or repaired any of these vehicles under a secretwarranty??please let me know if you need any other information.
