Multiple repair problems--airplate was repaired--new engine installed after having only 54,000 miles with regular oil changes--electrical problem with radio display--now back passenger tire/possible axle, strut; sounds like back tire is about to fall off upon hitting bumps in the road/driveways or turning.i have not had this checked out-am now unable to drive vehicle .

Had 1999 grand prix for seven months already had problems with drivers window not winding down.a part of the passenger door panel started to come off.now drivers seat belt won't latch, and is currently in the shop for broken valve spring and damage to the head gasket as a result from the broken valve spring.car only had 1 other owner and was running perfect also had perfect service records.

Started to making strange noises, so i went to get checked out. And it had at five things wrong..

Early monday morning got into car as normal to go to work, turned the key to start and immediatly there was a loud thump then smoke started pouring out of hood area, i opened the hood and the engine was engulfed in flames, the noise was so loud it woke my family in which they called the fire department by then i had already ran to my boat to retrieve my fire extinguisher to put the fire out, luckily i had the extinguisher and was able to cancel fire department call and put the fire out by myself, now i am awaiting estimate from mechanic to see if engine can be salvaged or if it is a total loss

Car was driven less than 2 miles.parked and when returned 15 minutes later troy ny fire dept had hood up and put out a small fire under engine cover.they said it appeared to be electrical in nature.this car had a recall issued and work completed to correct a engine fire issue on 9/24/2010 at 172,221 miles.i contacted pontiac and they gave me a case # and said they would take a look at the car.a couple of weeks later they sent me out a denial letter stating that nys only requires a 4 year from in service date warranty and that i was well past that timeframe.my concern is that their recall did not remedy the situation and that the work was completed before i even put three thousand miles on the car.

The cars headlights will randomly shut off or only high beams will work, the 3800 motor has many issues with parts malfunctioning over and over no matter what manufacturer that's used to supply the parts oem or aftermarket, i've replaced many maf, tps, iac, cps sensors over the brief amount of time owning pretty much any vehicle equipped with the 3800 series ii v6, gauge clusters randomly stop working but that a known gm issue for multiple vehicles for several years, coolant corossian and internal rust from dex cool coolant

My 1999 grand prix gtp drives fine, then it will cut off sporadically.the most recent, i was driving 60 mph on the highway, cuts off, battery light on, and oil light on, loses power steering and braking.go to the shoulder. Put the car in park, turn the ignition off.a minute later starts back, driving on the highway for 5 minutes, does the same thing.it will stall at stop lights also, or when i'm going 20 mph, whenever it wants. One time it would not start back up for 10 minutes.i have it at the dealership, they have found nothing, i've had 2 other mechanics look at it, they found nothing.i have googled the problem and found other complaints, but no recalls.and this has occurred 10 times or so in the past year.and has occurred in the previous years since i bought the car in 2007.it is frustrating when the mechanics tell me there is no error code in the cars computer.

Drove 10 minutes to work, 10 minutes later, someone yelled "there is a car on fire!"i found out it was mine.flames were showing under the engine compartment.the vehicle was totaled. Gm blamed the fire on the dealer installed alarm system. There was no warning of anykind. The fire spreaded quickly.

I had been home for approximately 5 minutes after about a 45 minute drive when i heard a loud pop outside followed by a loud boom. I looked out window a saw that my car was on fire. Dt: car was parked and caught on fire while engine was turned off.the car was destroyed, the whole engine departmentwas consumed.fire dept came.gm sent engineer out to inspect damage. Contacted gm, and they did not share results of that report, stated nothing was wrong,-no defect found.

Car over heats in stalled traffic. I have reviewed the overheating and car fire complaints in the "defects data base" and believe the main problem has not been identified:'the computer will not call for full fan power' unless the a/c iis running..driving the car with the windows down on a warm day in stalled traffic, will raise the engine temperature as the cooling fans are both running in slow speed and will not go to the "high cool mode".but, turning the a/c on will speed up the fans to high and cool the engine.the computer should recognize the need for additional cooling with out the a/c having to be turned on. The increased engine heat due to this 'cooling system logic failure' will contribute to the oil leaks and engine fires that have already been reported to this agency.my vehicle, the radiator, fans, relays are all working as designed, and there are no diagnostic codes.thus i am advising that this is a defect in logic with regard to controlling the high speed function of the radiator cooling fans. Having installed a new radiator recently and resealed the valve cover pans, i remain convinced that the problem is with the 'cooling circuit logic".

On may 24, 2005, my care (1999 pontiac grand prix) had a hard time starting.it seemed as if the car didn't have enough power.i immediately suspected the battery.i drove the car around to see if it would recharge itself.after driving the car, i let it sit for about an hour and tried it again.the car was completely dead.i decided to pull the battery and have it tested.i disconnected the (-) terminal and noticed the the (+) terminal was very corroded and there was a lot of corrosion down the side of the battery as well.when i pulled the cap off the (+) terminal the entire terminal pulled off the battery and battery acid spilled out onto the belts, hoses, and cables in that part of the car.i quickly pulled the battery out of the car and put baking soda on the acid to neutralize it as best as possible.i have purchased a new battery but now have to replace the (+) battery cable as it is so corroded, i cannot get the terminal off.i have a huge battery acid stain on my garage floor were the acid spilled out.at this time i do not know if the other belts, hoses or cables need to be replaced as well.i had to dispose of the battery, but i still have the cable.my car has never been involved in an accident nor has it be driven over rough roads.i spoke with a friend who has the same car and he had the same thing happen to him a year ago.after find this out, i went back to look at where the battery sits and noticed that there is nothing there to really hold the battery down except for the cables.the pressure of holding the battery in place is resting on cables and terminals which were not made for that purpose.

Axle bearing went out, causing a real loudnoise. Took to dealer and they fixed the problem.also, alternator went out, and was also making anoise. Took to dea ler and they replaced power steering pump and altenator.rear window switch also went bad and stopped working, took to dealer who replaced that.

Car will die. Sometimes when pulling out in intersection, at about 10mph. You don't know when this is going to happen . It has done it 11 times in about 5mo. This is very dangerous , because you don't know if this is going to happen . You are in the middle of the road with no power.

My 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp had been parked on my mother's carport approx. 10 minutes when i looked out to see smoke. Rushing outside the entire hood area of the car was engulfed in flames. Had the local volunteer fire department not have responded within 10 minutes, her home would have been destroyed. Damage to the car was a total loss, damage to my elderly mother's home in excess of $6,000. The fire department was unable to determine exact cause, but said it appeared to be faulty wiring.no previous problems with anything on the car to indicate a fire was about to occur.

Our 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp has run fine since our purchase in june of 2006.it was in extremely good condition, 1 owner car. My son drove it to work on 2/25/08 and 15 minutes later it was engulfed with flames in the engine compartmentalize no red light indication or no smell or order.just parked it at work then 15 minutes later it was on fire.

The event leading up the failure was i drove it.there is something wrong here. When 25+ cars burn down for no reason. What does it take for pontiac / gm / government agencies to acknowledge a problem and reimburse people for their loss? death? there have been too many pontiac - grand prix -gm 3800 series engine fires. All i did was park my car after driving and within 5 minutes of parking my car in feb of 2003 it burned to the ground. There were no malfunction indications, not over heated and ignited while i walked away. Fire marshal and independent investigator said the fire originated in the engine compartment, near the drivers head lamp area. It had a bumper to bumper gm policy in effect as well as full insurance. Pontiac laughed when i called. The gm insurance underwriter called me an idiot and hung-up. Then my insurance company tried to have me accused of arson. Even though their investigator could not find anything....why? take the publics money and at the first sign of trouble hide billion dollar companies behind politicians and the laws and agencies designed to protect us?

Electrical fire in the dash of a 1999 pontiac grand prix.it appears to be caused by an overheated sensor indicator.

W as driving car and it caught on fire. Fire started underneath near the manifold and it burnt all the wiring and everything around it. I got the fire out myself with fire extengisher.i only carried liability so i didn't have any money to fix it, and it went to a junk yard. Apprasial value would have been around 1,500.i didn't know there was a recall on this problem,or i would have took pictures and had a estimate done. Takata recall / my car had a gm recall 15757.it involved the replacement of my engine front valve cover and front valve cover gasket.i took it to the gateway buick gmc on 3/5/2016.after the job was finished i found out my engine plastic beauty cover was missing.i was told it didnt fit because of the new parts.it is unexceptable that my engine is left exposed and there wasnt a newly designed plastic beauty cover.i am not happy with the result.plus, my car is now misfiringand before i took it in for service the car was running fine and not misfiring.my spark plug wires were loose and easily detached from the connection where the spark plug connects as if it was pulled carelessly.i regret taking my car in for the recall.my car should have no problems period after service.

After owning this vehicle for a very short time,it had some minor body work done and completely repainted. I had new headlights and taillights installed due to the poor condition of the existing lights.the second day i drove the car to work, i returned home, parked it in the attached garage and went inside.in less than 5 minutes, there was a loud "pop", and upon investigation the car was found to be smoking from under the hood.we tried using a fire extinguisher, but the engine was flaming by then, so it was useless.luckily, a passerby stopped and was able to pull the burning car from the garage, but not before there was some substantial damage to the interior.the entire front end of the vehicle is completely burned and melted.it is a complete loss which is unfortunate since i only carried liability insurance on it until it was completely finished in the body shop.since this fire, i have been checking on recalls concerning any related problems with this model.i have found several that are similar to this situation.i personally know of three other fire related incidences of 1999 pontiacs.

The car was parked in a parking lot. It caught fire 30 min after it was parked and burned the entire engine compartment. The fore department stopped the fire before it spread to the rest of the car. It was a good car previous to this instance. We maintained the car well and had it looked over by a mechanic monthly. We will never own a pontiac again.

On may 30th, 2007 i returned home from work at around 3:30 pm eastern. Time and parked my 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp in the garage and went in the house.prior to parking and turning off the car it had been driven approximately 25 miles in around 35 minutes.after about 20 minutes my wife and i began to smell smoke and found it coming from the garage.we could see smoke billowing out from under the hood.we tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher, but the fire was too big.my wife called 911 and the fire department had to come and put out the fire.after some research i found nhtsa action number pe07006.there was damage to our garage and smoke damage and some minor physical damage inside.the car was totaled out by the insurance company.

My son drove home from school, parked the 1999 pontiac grand prix in our front yard, went inside for a few minutes before coming out again to feed our animals and noticed that smoke was coming from underneath the hood. Tried to lift hood, but then noticed small flames and did not continue to open, but went around the house to get a water hose to sprinkle on the car. Long story short, the entire front end of the car burned and is a total loss. The fire department came and extinguished the fire as it was far beyond what our home fire extinguisher could handle. The flames and dripping melted plastic ignited the shrubs in my front yard in front of the deck, and if the fire department had not gotten there when they did, my deck and home would have been burned down as well.i have filed a claim with my insurance company, but believe this should never have happened. I have now found a recall #08v118000 which describes what may happen as a consequence of the defect, and it matches very nearly with what actually happened in my yard. Gm should be held liable for the replacement of my vehicle, cleanup of my yard, replacement of my hedges, and for scaring (traumatizing) my son, and other members of my family. I am thankful that the car was not being driven when this happened and that no one was injured, but am angry that gm was aware that this could happen and we never received any notification of this through the mail or through the dealership where we purchased this vehicle used in 2005.

Catalytic converter had to be replaced, after replacing, could not drive car because temperature gauge went to 260 degrees in 6 or 7 minutes of driving. Never had this particular problem or any idea of a problem until a week ago while driving in traffic, car was sluggish and check engine light came on and would not go off. I immediately went home which was a 2 mile drive and parked car. Called a gm ase certified mechanic and his computer check read that a misfire of #1 plug. Plugs were replaced and then mechanic let engine run since there was white smoke, until there was no indication of smoke at all. Then he checked and said to go and have the catalytic converter checked. Converter was checked and was told it was clogged and needed replacing. Replaced converter, tried driving home approximately 3 miles and car started getting hot temperature and when stopped, was very hard to start, but kept getting up to 260 degrees, which required me to stop and let engine cool and try to get home and parked car. Called converter installer and they will check again, but was told to add coolant, but do not drive. Dex cool was added, per book specs and started car. Startedto run, but thick white smoke billowed out and a burning odor was detected. Quickly turned car off and will have to call aaa to tow to converter installer shop for another shop.i have also had to replace 3 motors in the driver front window and it is still not going up or down. I have complained to gm about this issue before.oh, i called gm also about the warranty on the converter and i was over the mileage for the 8 year warranty. Before this, i have spent over $400.00 to replace gaskets and valves recently on the engine and i cant afford anymore, i am disabled and receiving ssi.is there any remedy?

1999 pontiac grand prix caught fire. Consumer stated that while driving on the highway she noticed smoke coming threw the vents. When she pulled over the engine was on fire.possibly related to recall 08v118000. The consumer no longer owns the vehicle.

Recall on my 1999 grand prix was late, and my complaints to the dealers resulted in nothing but a hassle. Fire under hood, i could not figure out why the dealer was no help, i could not afford there rebuilding the engine (there recommendation) the engine still ran but i was not about to allow my family to drive a unsafe car. Catch 22 i was there.

Since the beginning of june, the car has shut off while my son has been driving it six times.he has been on the interstate, on our local roads, etc. The car will start right back up.it is scary for a newer driver or anyone for that matter to be driving on the highway and the car just shut off.

1999 pontiac grand prix had a defective gasket.consumer received a recall for the gasket after he had the repairs done.he wants to be reimbursed for all cost. *njthe consumer stated prior to the recall, he had problems with oil leakage. In september 2003, intake plenium failed causing vehicle not to run; there is no preventative maintenance to keep this situation from happening; i was informed that since a pontiac dealership did not inspect/repair the damage they would not be able to assist in this situation even though during my initial telelphone conversation with pontiac they could not even give me any idea of the potential for this to be covered; (fyi the mechanic who did the repairs is ace certified) the dealership has indicated they are keeping these parts in stock because they are doing about 5 of these types of repairs per week (that's one dealership in one county in one state)when an appeal letter was sent to pontiac, it was routed to the same customer service representative who all but stated there was nothing going to be done; i was informed that i should expect problems with my vehicle because it has what some consider high mileage;most recently on april 7, 2004i was driving on the interstate, my engine blew up--the vehicle has 82k milesif pontiac vehicles are only good for 70k miles, pontiac should disclose this fact so that i can make an informed decision before i purchaseif the intake plenium assembly is being kept in stock at a dealership, there is a true issue.dealerships generally only keep parts that are going to be used regularlynormally dealerships do not want to keep the higher priced/not so commonly used partsin stock simply because they don't want expensive overhead nor have a large are for storing unused parts.this tells me this is a common problem which needs immediate attention. Is gm doing this for the sole purpose of getting people to buy parts or even a new vehicle from them? if the dealership and even pontiac won't say they are going to pay for the repairs and know there is an issue that should be investigated, it seems that gm/pontia are knowingly keeping information from consumers which could potentially be deadly.

The car damaged the plenum three times, this cause multiple missfire until the car wont start; there is corrosion on spark cables, damaged the coils. All power window machinery and/or motors also damaged.

02/08 car was sitting in drive-way, shut off, when we saw flames coming from the engine .by the time the fire department got there it was gone-it went quick. I had the car for 1 year and never had any trouble . I am still paying for this car as i only had liability. I got the recall a month later. I tried to talk to g.m. Several times, but they pretty much told me they were going to do nothing about it. I couldn't afford to get another car my son found me one,he traded a truck he had been building for it. I lost the car and everything in it. This was a very bad economical time for me and i wish i could get a bail-out like g.m. Did. This is so unfair!

My wife called 911 and told them that the car was on fire and it has a full tank of gas (my neighbor also called 911).my wife then said to move away from the windows and door just in case the car blows.while moving back we saw the blaze from the grand prix spread over to the seville catching the right side tire on fire. By this time the fire and police were on the site.the grand prix burned from the front hood to the back seats before being contained, and the front windshield was cracked and front right quarter panel on the 1993 seville was burnt badly including the right tire, the turn signal lights and head lights. I'm simply out raged that my insurer will not cover my seville for the damages done by no fault of mine. Something needs to be done. I had two perfectly running vehicles until sunday morning and now i'm down two.my insurance company has indicated that they will pay for the grand prix but pull out a clause in my policy saying that damage to property while it is owned by you is not covered!, but if someone else's vehicle would have been damaged, then it would have been covered. This is no fault of mine and i've always pay my insurance on time and i'm robbed in the end... Where is the justice?!?!? i have always owned gm and i'm now rethinking that!

My 1999 grand prix gtp engine compartment caught fire after it was parked in my garage for approximately 5-7 minutes.the fire totaled the car, and caused a great deal of damage to the garage.

(1) power loss and loss of coolant (2) intake manifold failure, 3 months out of warranty and only 67000miles. Had to have vehicle towed to nearest garage for repair.(3) replaced intake manifold, thermostat, and hoses. Flush a fill cooling system. Changed oil and filter.

Vehicle stalled intermittently. It canoccur at any speed while driving or at a stop position. Dealer notified.

When i first got my car in 2012, had to take it back to place, because it cut off/ stalled. Bought as is. Had warranty for 3 months. They did not honor it. It has been one problem, after another. With this car. Since the day i bought it.

Car suddenly started running very poor.skipping, no power.took to dealer and they replaced the plastic intake manifold.cost me $1200.approximately 75,000 miles.in searching the web for others having this problem, i conclude that there is a design problem and gm should stand behind it.i really like this car but i won't buy another gm.

Cooling system.. Intake manifold gasket leak. It was going on for over a year and a half and pepboys did nothing but change the thermostat and then it would happen again. Then one day they decided that the gasket was leaking and wanted to charge me $600.00 to fix.

I previously owned a 1999 pontiac grand prix. I began to notice an engine odor. I made an appointment to have it checked. Before i could have it checked out the vehicle caught fire about 10 minutes after i had parked the vehicle at work. It was a total loss. They could not tell me why it had caught fire. Just that it had started under the hood. And they believed it was electrical.i purchased a 2000 grand prix to replace it. I am now smelling the same odor in this car.i saw the recall on tv for the supercharged 3.8l. Neither car was supercharged. But i believe it is not only the supercharged models that are having this problem.

My airconditioner fan switch has now gone once again and is in need of "another new one, this will be 3.the paint on my hood is starting to crack a bit and will be peeling shortly. This car was very well maintained and garaged and there was no reason for this!the power windows went about 3 diferant times on both sides of the vehicle and the switches had to be fully replaced.the radio has a short in it in the back somewhere and the display goes crazy at times.lastly and most importantly, i have had a water leak on this car since 1999.it has been into the dealership too many times to count.they changed out the windshield at least 5 maybe more times, checked all the seals on the side mirrors and the sunroof, cleaned out the drains on the sunroof a few times and after the car was in the last time 8 months ago, they told me that it was the last time they would do anything about it.it was find w/no water until last week when we had pouring rain and in flooded my interior once again.pontiac's solution was to give me $1,000 for the purchase of another car, thanks for nothing!in doing my research i have found out a lot of info that i am once again going to pontiac/gm about.on my particular car when they made the drains for the sunroof, they made them too small, so when it pours out, the drains cannot handle all of the water and it is forced into my car.i work for an insurance company and have spoken to "many, many" people regarding my car.funny thing is, i have heard this from several glass companies and dealership salesmen!what can be done about this to help me, the consumer?any help is welcome

We left home and drove about 8 miles to meet some relatives for dinner.when we arrived at our destination, there was no smoke, noise or even a smell coming from the car.about 15 minutes later, a man came running into the restaurant yelling"somebody's car is on fire!"one of the restaurant employees put out the fire.the only damage was to the engine compartment so we did a buy back from our insurance company thinking we would be able to buy some salvage parts to put the car back together.it has been 13 months now and we still have not been able to find all the parts in salvage.my assumption is that there are so many of these fires nationwide that when a salvage yard gets good engine compartment parts for these cars, that they are sold very quickly!

Engine/cooling system anti-freeze dex-cool leaks into the engine and i have had to replace the heads on the engine twice costing me over 2,000 and consumer reports on channel 3 reported that over time the anti-freeze that only newer gm models use is bad for the engine eventually wearing down the parts in the engine.i would like full reimbursement for the cost of repairs and if possible to change the car over to the regular green anti-freeze car makers have been using for years.

I brought the car brand new .i had no problems with my car except my check engine light came on.i had an ase certified mechanic check the car.he checked over my car and everything was fine.he used a computer. And the code came back clogged catalytic converter.i called gm twice and they said that my car was not under a recall i saw.i never got a recall letter.another mechanic used a computer and laser light and it came back again clogged catalytic converter.the catalytic converter was replaced.after that i went to a gas station and got gas.started my car up and itdidn't want to start.after 3 times it started.then i noticed that the temperature shot to 260 degrees.engine overheated for the first time since i had the car.i parked the car in a grocery store parking lot and let the engine cool for about 2 hours before driving home.in less then 1 mile the engine overheated again.finally made it to the house.pulled into garage.then black smoke started coming from under the hood.i turned the car off and it really started smoking and popping.i got scared and put the car in neutral and let the car roll out the garage.black smoke was coming from under the hood and i turned the car off.it was popping, cracking and smoking.it took a while for the smoke to clear.the next day an ase certified mechanic came by the house and checked the car and said the engine burned and was seized.my engine never overheated before this.

Consumer stated that a recall letter came for a 2000 grand prix that wasleaking anti freeze in to the motor.consumer owned a 1999 grand prix that was doing the exact same thing, butmanufacturer indicated that consumer's vehicle was not covered by the recall.

My 1999 grand prix gtp when it get a little hot shut offwith no warning.

The intake on my car has cracked and been replaced twice in two years. The cause is still uknown.

There was a leak of radiator fluid into the pistons.it was discovered that the plastic line in the engine wasdefective, and then was replaced.*tc

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix purchased in 2007. Twenty minutes after the vehicle was parked it caught fire. There was heavy black smoke under the hood of the vehicle. After opening the hood, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. The harness', alternators, battery and other components under the hood were completely melted.nhtsa campaign id number 09v116000 was initiated after the fire occurred which indicated that the fire could occur. The manufacturer stated they were not going to reimburse him for the damages since they were filing for bankruptcy. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and current mileages were approximately 122,000.

Faulty plastic intake manifold/ gasket on a pontiac grand prix (1999) caused coolant leakage into oil and cylinders. Caused my car to quit on a busy highway (almost caused accident)

While driving the engine check light came on as vehicle started to accelerate and then sputter and misfire, almost causing a multiple caraccident.vehicle would not restart. After towing the car to the dealer(close to closing time), they determined that the problem was that the enginehydro-static locked and they needed to investigate why it happened.as an uncanny coincidence, another grand prix similar to mine(down to the same color carand towing company)was there for the same reason.the next morning the dealer stated theycould fix it for around $1,200, but not stating why it happened or what caused the engine to lock up and that they were working on it right then.after none of my questions were getting answered i stormed into where my car was(in the back lot... Parked!!!!), while i called a tow company, and demanded my keys back.a mechanic that supposedly looked at my car stated that the intake manifold was the problem causing the engine to hydro-static lock and that my startershattered upon restart testing.after leaving without repairs and towing my car to my residence, i looked under the hood and discovered that my car wasn't even touched...no bolts loosened or dust wiped off of them, the brittle wire holders and clips weren't disturbed...there was no way to find afault like that without taking the intake manifold off.i finally fixed the problem myself by replacing the plastic intake manifold and gasket and starter(no problems since then, watching it closely and kept the old intake manifold and gasket).squealing sounds started coming from under the hood (belt tensioner area) so ireplaced the serpentine belt(squealing continued though).i found the that belt tensioner bolt that holds in the pulley was working itself out...not a good thing.the power windows and locks went out about 5 different times on the drivers side, and the radio display goes crazy and/or blanks out at times.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix.while the vehicle was parked in the contact's driveway, he noticed smoke and flames under the hood.the fire department extinguished the fire and stated that the wiring harness in the engine caused the failure.a police report was filed.the incident was reported to the manufacturer and they collected all of the information from the contact.there were no injuries.the failure mileage was 200,000.

The vehicle stalled without warning, which caused the consumer to pull over abruptly.

Vehicle's intake manifold cracked and engine coolant leaked into the engine. *mr the upper intake manifold cracked and coolant leaked into the cylinders and seized the bearings.on another occasion the vehicle overheated.the consumer was told that the engine was damaged beyond repair. *sc

Both engine valve covers leak.oil seepage has reached the bottom of the engine block at 22000 miles.

I have a 99 pontiac grand prix gtp that has leaks in both valve cover gaskets and the lower and upper intake gaskets. I understand that their has been a recall on the valve covers because they were causing fires from oil leaking on the manifold from hard breaking. I also understand that there has been a safety notice issued for the upper intake leaking around the turbo charger. This has been going on for several years with this car. I have taken it to many mechanics whom say that i should wait until the complete recall has been issued. This car has had maintenance work performed by my husband who has been a mechanic for 45 years. He no longer works on vehicles but still has the knowledge of a mechanic. I would like for this recall to be issued so my car can be driven. I'm having to depend on one vehicle which puts a strain on my everyday life.

I brought the car brand new .i had no problems with my car except my check engine light came on.i had an ase certified mechanic check the car.he checked over my car and everything was fine.he used a computer. Two manifold gasket failures on 1999 pontiac grand prix.car has less than 70,000 miles on it.first gasket replaced while still under factory warranty.took vehicle in for oil change and decreased fuel efficiency.i was notified that gasket was failing again. Gasket apparently not able to last 5 years even under very low mileage.

Dt:1999 pontiac grand prixthe intake was defective and locked the up the engine. The consumerspoke with the dealership, they have several complaintsbut no recalls as of now. Where the water comes in, the plastic housing intake is cracking and deteriorating and water entered the cylinders which caused the engine to lock up.the consumers wife was driving when this happened. The vehicle had to be towed and the mechanic could not turn the crank with a pipe wrench.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix gt purchased in 2001. While parked in a store parking lot, the vehicle began smoking under the hood.the entire front end of the vehicle caught on fire . The fire department extinguished the fire.however the flames resurfaced. The vehicle was completely destroyed. A police and fire report was filed. Prior to the fire, she received a recall letter pertaining to the failure and notified the closest dealer which stated the part needed for the recall repair was not yet available.she was put on a waiting list because they could not make an appointment for her at that time. The current and failure mileages were under 150,000.

Dealer replaced the engine on september 2002. Vehicle was driven for two weeks again, engine was replaced. On january 2003,engine was replaced for the third time. Consumer stated the engine needed to be replace again.

The intake manifold was replaced a year ago and may have caused damage to the engine.the rod bearings failed.the heat gauge was noticed warmer than usual and eventually overheated and shut off.gm dealers agreed the cause was due to the failed plentum.*scc

Faulty intake and/or intake gasket caused anti-freeze to leak into the engine resulting in engine failure.repair bill was $1600.gm has issued recalls on 2000 and 2001 pontiac grand prix models with the same issue, but will not admit to same problem with 1999 model.*la

I was the owner of a 1999 pontiac grand prix gt.on the evening of 10-16-06 after parking the car in my garage it caught fire about 4 minutes after turning the ignition off.the fire started under the hood.the car was totaled as a result.i was the original owner of the vehicle.this vehicle was only maintained by certified gm dealerships.on that evening no there was no indication that there was a problem.no unusual lights on the driver control panel or unusual smells.i am sending this again because after reviewing the info that was originally given the year of the car is a 1999 not 1996.sorry for the error.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix.the contact stated that oil was leaking onto the exhaust manifold on his vehicle.the failure was caused by a faulty gasket and cover.the dealer will repair the vehicle according to nhtsa campaign id number 09v116000 and gm recall number 90047 (engine and engine cooling:engine); however, the contact stated that the vehicle would still catch fire.the failure mileage was 143,500.

Leaks ant freeze into the block said it was the upper and lower intake gaskets. Need a recall on that.

The contact owned a 1999 pontiac grand prix.the contact stated that she heard an abnormal popping noise from inside her residence and discovered that the vehicle was on fire. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire. It was determined that the fire originated from the engine. A fire report was available. The vehicle was destroyed.the contact referenced recall 09v116000, engine and engine cooling and stated she did not receive a recall letter.the vehicle was purchased used in 2008 and the contact did not confirm if the recall applied to her vin or if the previous owner has satisfied the recall repair requirements. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

This is the same car as on this report filed earlier and i am the same complainant and still have not gotten any relief. Had upper manifold plenum and gasket replaced, along with new plugs and wires. Car ran ok for approx. 6 months and had problems again. Took car to a mechanic and was told that the same problem would happen again, as the so-called better plastic plenums and gaskets dissolves again. Car started running rough, replaced plug wires per mechanic, which would take roughness away. Drove about 1 week and no good results. Finally took car to another mechanic and found out that the upper intake manifold was not the problem as previous gm mechanic stated, but the lower manifold and gaskets were the problem and should have been checked, this problem caused the engine to take in air and water, the plug were burned off as if eaten away by acid and water was escaping through the engine valves. I was shown the damaged plugs and the disintegrated gasket and warped manifold cover. Now my engine is gone because not only are the head gasket blown, but the engine has a cracked block due to the heat. I will hopefully never buy another gm auto. That is why people support the foreign car markets. They seem to make better autos, even the recalled ones. I have to replace at my own engine, if i do, at my own cost, due to their faulty and inferior materials.this is clearly a rip-off and unfair to the american consumers.this car was bought new in 12/1999 with 26 miles on it and has been upkept inside and outside and currently have only 98,000 miles on the damaged engine. Now i have the same problem, only worse.i have also replace the motor driver front window 2 times and also other components on the same window and it still does not work so it is up position permanently. If it goes down, the door have to be taken apart to get it back up.

1999 pontiac grand prix gtp destroyed by engine fire 10 minutes after it was parked.

I received a safety recall #09047 from gm yesterday on my 1999 pontiac grand prix gt.i thought you might be interested to know that my car already caught fire on february 17 this year and the insurance company deemed it a complete loss.in addition, it caused nearly $7000 in damage to my home which was limited only by the fact that i was home and saw the fire early enough to begin containing it until the fire dept. Arrived.i thought you might want to add my car to the list of defective vehicles alreadydestroyed by this problem.

The intake manifold cracked while driving.

Driving on us 85 north at mile marker 82 in nc at 6:00 pm.engine starts misfiring then within a few seconds racing and loss of brake power.pull over to shoulder immediately and turn off car.open hood and smoke coming from under engine cover and embers visible.car towed for 96 miles to auto pro-to-call in chapel hill, nc.the following morning (12/17/2007) technician removed cover and found that there had been a fire under the cover with very extensive damage.

I purchased this vehicle usedabout three months ago and last week my daughter was driving the car when it overheated and damaged my entire motor i took it to a auto place to have it looked at and they informed me that the car overheated causing the motor to lock up. This was due to the recall that every number i called that had the recall number 09047. Which is a engine and engine cooling.

I have a 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp super charged v6 that caught fire on saturday, september 9th, 2006.after driving back to work on a saturday evening, i parked the car just outside our entrance.my fiance and i sat down to eat dinner near the entrance, and within 10 minutes noticed a fog drifting by the entrance doors.when we took a closer look at the white fog, we realized it was smoke and called the ann arbor fire department.the fire department said they we're on the way.after hanging up the phone, a burst of flames exited out the front wheel well.i immediately grabbed a dry-chem fire extinguisher and ran outside to spray under the wheel well.it pushed the flames back, but the flames returned almost instantly even stronger.i sprayed another fire extinguisher, but it had little effect.at that point i decided to get away from the vehicle and wait for the fire department.the first to arrive was a police officer who stood by as we waited for the firefighters.while waiting, the hood popped the latch from the pressure build-up.once the fire truck arrived, the firefighters used an axe to open the hood, and two other firefighters stood over the flames with the hose to extinguish the fire.after they were finished, the fire inspector took a look at the engine to determine the origin of the fire and took a few pictures.much of the front end of the car melted, and the black melted plastic was cleaned up by a tow truck driver.thankfully, i still have the car intact and parked in the back lot behind my family's retail store in ann arbor, mi.i would be more than happy to offer my car to whomever is heading up this investigation or even representatives from gm as it appears to be the exact same situation as the other gtp owner's complaints.the car has been untouched, except for duct taping the bumper back on so it doesn't look bad behind our store.please feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.

I owned a 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp and i was driving approx. 80mph down a interstate and shortly after i exited the interstate and parked my vehicle, approx. 5 - 10 minitues, my vehicle was on fire underhoodthe only. The vehicle had regular maintance done on it and was very well maintainted.

On 10/21/2009 as i was on my way home from picking my son up from school, my 1999 pontiac grand prix gt caught on fire. I was driving down the road the check engine light came on the car started to hesitate like a spark plug had fouled out and the smoke started coming through the vents inside the car and the car cut off. I coasted the car off the road into a mans yard just in time for us to get out when flames became visible. We grabbed our things and ran, i called 911 and some man stopped and got the hood raised he had a fire extinguisher but it wasn't doing much good. The fire department arrived put the fire out and i explained to them that the car was in great shape and we had had no problems with it before that i had smelled something that smelled like burning oil and my husband was going to look at it when he got home from work because he is a mechanic but i had not ever had any issues like this before. A couple of days later i saw my neighbor and saw the car he asked what had happened and i explained and he asked if there had been any recalls on the car and i told him i had not received any notices. That is when i checked for recalls and sure enough there was a recall for fires in the engine compartment. Well i called gm and they were shocked that my car had caught on fire. They had me contact a department called the esis department they told me the "time barred from a claim with general motors" and there was nothing that could be done. So i have gone from having a perfectly good car to not having a car at all. I did however receive a recall notice from gm on feb 5, 2010. Alot of good that did me seeing that my car is totally ruined. Oh yes and the woman i spoke to at gm esis departments name was debbie roach. So if anyone knows how i can get help with this please post something.

Whileaccelerating from parkedposition, engine died andthe abs brake light come on. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, and problem was not found.vehicle still experiencing the same proplem.

Engine is surging in overdrive between 50 and 60 mph, unable to determine cause.*mjs

Ongoing problem with vehicle stalling from a stop position. Whenever vehicle came to a stop and driver pressed on the accelerator pedal vehicle would stall. Dealer notified on two occasions, and vehicle still in repair shop. Problem is still unresolved.vehicle now returned to dealer four times; problem still not resolved. Can nhtsa provide information on this matter.

I drive a 2002 toyota camry. My car was parked next to a 1999 pontiac grand prix. The grand prix caught on fire under the hood spreading to my car.my car and the grand prix total loss.reading on the internet seems this is a problem with the pontiac grand prix.wondering why this problem not addressed by pontiac. I know they take no credit but seems to be a recurring problem.

Lower intake manifold gasket cracked resulting in coolant leak into engine.repair cost over $700.car only has 40,000 miles.mechanic stated that this is a known defect in this engine and doesn't understand why gm has not issued a recall.

While driving under 30mph engine check light came on asvehicle started to accelerate.engine started to sputter and misfire, causingconsumer to take vehicle back home. Vehicle would not restart due toengine locking up, and causingstarter to completely fail. Dealer determined that intake manifold cracked. Please provide more information.

Intermittently vehicle wiouldstall out and die without warring at various speeds. Dealer has inspectedvehicle, and could not duplicate or correct problem. Please provide further information.

Driving down interstate for approx 100 miles, engine temperature suddenly overheated. Son and wife immediately pulled over and shut motor off. They waited approx 30 minutes for engine to cool off. They tried to restart the engine, but it didn't sound right so they stopped. Had vehicle towed to the dealer in springfield, vt for repair. Informed on monday that engine intake manifold cracked causing loss of coolant. Car had approx 79500 miles on it. When driving vehicle at various speeds, it would stall out in the middle of traffic. Vehcle can be restarted after being shut down for awhile. Has happened 3 different times. Had taken to dealership and mechanic test drove vehcle, but it did not stall. Problemwas intermittent.

Wife and 3 children stopped at light and engine in 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp burst into flames. Car was bought 7 months ago and was state inspected and well maintained till the fire. Car did not leak any fluids and the engine and engine compartment was spotless of any oil or debris. The east windsor police and fire dept. Responded and the case number is 07-16572.

Engine dies when pulling out on oncoming traffic

Engine suddenly misses and sometimes dies while moving and at the same time, the tachometer quits and the 'traction control off' switch-light comes on.the engine sometimes restarts immediately and/or the engine smooths out, but the tachometer remains inoperative and the traction control off light stays lit.stopping and restarting the engine resets the tach and indicator light.sometimes when the engine does die, it will not restart for several minutes and there have been instances of being stranded on the expressway.

Car stalls on accel, transmission shifts hard in to 2nd gear

Engine dies without warning at various speeds.taken to dealer several times, but problem still exists.

Engine stalls when pulling out in traffic, usually turning left or right to pull into a lane of traffic.after pulling to a stop the engine restarts quickly.no engine trouble lights are set.this has has happened several times (approximately 10) and is very dangerous (pulling into traffic and having the car stall just as you start).after noting that there have been many complaints under engine or electrical on you web site, for the same problem, i feel this issue needs to be address before someone is killed or injured.for me, i am considering selling the car.

Vehicle would stall out while driving at multiple speed. Vehicle been to dealer on four occasions, and dealer wasunable to duplicate the problem.feel free to provide any further information.

Engine will stall, especially when pulling out in traffic. It usually happen when accelerating after coming to a stop (between 0-15 mph) and makes the car extremely unsafe to drive. The car will restart and no lights come on, therefore the dealer cannot find where any "codes" have been set in the engine. I have had the car to the dealer numerous times, and they cannot recreate or diagnose the problem. I have also opened a file with pontiac. This problem is a danger to everyone on the road, especially grand prix drivers. When will this problem be investigated and what will it take for a "fix" to be implemented? as it stands now, the car is unsafe to drive, and the dealership cannot offer an explanation.

Cracked intake manifold...blown head gasket.

Upper intake manifold starts to rot out in coolent passage. This will be a real problem for gm all of the ones that i found in junk yard had or were about to have this problem.

Car was totaled due to engine fire caused by oil hitting exhaust.the car burned completely.it caught fire while driving and burned in my driveway.

1999 pontiac grand prix had engine compartment fire recall work completed 8-14-08 . Caught fire and burned engine compartment while setting in driveway after 10min drive on 8-25-08.

Our insured, john vermeulin's 1999 pontiac grand prix caught on fire.

1999 pontiac grand prix gt, engine locked up after 57,816 miles due to defective upper plenum made of inferior material, therefore causing the water, gas, and oil to mix locking down the engine. Giving the same symtoms as a blown head gasket.

1999 pontiac grand prix had a defective gasket.consumer received a recall for the gasket after he had the repairs done.he wants to be reimbursed for all cost. *njthe consumer stated prior to the recall, he had problems with oil leakage. In 2007 the consumer had major problems with the engine. He was told the spark plugs and ignition wires were covered in oil and needed to be replaced.the consumer was denied reimbursement. Themanufacturer stated the parts he had repaired were not the recalled parts. The mass air flow sensor was also bad and needed to be replaced.

The engine check light andcoolant light came on. The coolant in the container was boiling. The intake valve was defective, and the coolant was going into the oil.

Sudden engine failure while merging on highway nearly caused major accident dealer detected failed egr valve and replaced.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix.the oil valve cover leaked and caused the spark plugs to catch fire.the contact had to use a fire extinguisher to douse the fire.the vehicle was not taken to the dealer; however, a mechanic replaced the plug wires.the failure recurred two weeks later.the mechanic looked under the vehicle and discovered that both the front and back valve covered gaskets were leaking, which was the cause of the fire.gmc stated that his vin was not included in the recall; however, the contact believes the recall should be expanded to include his vehicle.the vin, engine size, and recall number were unknown.the current mileage was 109,000 and failure mileage was 108,000.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix.the contact smelled something burning every time she started the vehicle.when the vehicle was turned off, she noticed smoke underneath the hood.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the mechanic stated that both intake valve cover gaskets were leaking and that the vehicle did not have a surcharge engine.pontiac stated that they would not pay for the repairs.the vin, purchase date, and powertrain were unknown.the current mileage was 91,801 and failure mileage was 91,788.updated 4/7/08 updated 04/07/08

The contact owned a 1999 pontiac grand prix. While driving approximately 45 mph, flames ignited from underneath the hood. The contact shifted into park and exited the vehicle with the rear seat occupant. There were no injuries. The front end of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. A police report was filed. The fire department extinguished the massive flames. The fire originated from the engine exhaust manifold. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a savage facility. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling)the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.

Engine runs rough, loss of power, engine seizes up - this occurred approximately sept 2002. Initial diagnosis: blown head gasket or headers. Initial estimates to fix: approximately $4000-4500. Initial calls to pontiac/gm were fruitless. Result: replaced engine oct 2003 (approximately $3500 w/warranty). Incident occurs a second time approximately 3 weeks after new engine installed. Diagnosis: intake manifold coolant leak, broken piston rod. Calls to pontiac/gm fruitless once again. Result: awaiting another engine and manifold repairs.to make a long and arduous 14 months short - after a considerate number of calls to pontiac, i was eventually able to speak with a pontiac engineer (pe) who specializes in fuel and exhaust systems. Pe explained the cause of my problem, worse case scenario and the solution:the problem lies within the lower (aluminum) intake manifold. Within is a tube that houses the egr valve and carries exhaust gases. This tube was made relatively large and runs either through or close to the upper (plastic) intake manifold.over time, the extremely high temperatures of these exhaust gases causes the upper manifold to melt and creates a coolant leak into the fuel system. As this leak increases in size, increased amounts of coolant make its way into the piston chambers. Eventually, compression is lost and the piston rods can either bend or break.both the lower and upper manifolds need to be replaced. The lower has been redesigned with a smaller tube that houses the egr valve, therefore, it does not lie as close to the upper manifold. Pe even faxed me a copy of the official bulletin in referencing this problem for 1998 and older pontiacs. Recalls: 2000-2003 manifolds. What happened to the 99's? there were no design changes on the manifolds for the 98's, 99's and 00's.most dealership mechanics won't know about this problem.pontiac is aware of the initial design defect. Their official bulletins prove this. Why should the consumer have to pay for their design defect? *la

While driving between 65 - 70 mph engine started missing, then vehicle stalled. This was caused by the plastic intake manifold burning through which allowed anti freeze to flow into the engine compartment.as a result the engine , starter and spark plugs were damaged. Dealership replaced the damaged parts.

The plastic intake manifold cracked which resulted in a coolant leak. *nlm

Intake manifold keeps cracking. Rd time i have been left stranded.

A hole formed inside the intake manifold allowing antifreeze to be consumed by the engine, resulting in poor running and a $456.62 repair bill.

While driving down 20-mphconsumer heard loud noise coming through the engine, suddenlyand without any warning vehicle stalled and died. Vehicle was towed to independent shop, and mechanic determined that intake manifold. Failed.

Bought this car used at a dealership. After it was discovered leaking oil, i took to a good auto shop and found out the intake manifold is leaking oil. The repair will cost $1000.00. Auto shop said that there are many cars with this size engine (3800) that have the same problem. It was suggested i go to the dealership with the problem, then onto pushing for a recall. I expect i will be stuck with a big bill, but do plan to notify gm with this problem.

On 10/19/01 car died.dealer determined leak in upper manifold causing water to leak into engine.while within 3-mo warranty, the mileage was greater than 3,000 mi.they said it would be $1,200 to fix.my mechanic said it would be $700.he fixed it for $725.however, he said that he had spoken with other mechanics including people in the service dept at century who said that "gm knows they have a problem with this plastic part".on 12/7/01 the car quit.my mechanic indicated that there was shaving in the bottom of the engine and it had blown a rod.he spoke with several area mechanics who reported similar major engine damage following previous repairs of the leaks from the manifold.the engine had to be replaced at engine cost of $3,200 (thus total of close to $4,000).the mechanic says this is a design flaw in the plastic manifold and will likely happen again.he doesn't understand why there hasn't been a recall.

While driving consumer notice dcoolant indicator flashed. Consumer added anti freeze, but coolant kept flowing. Then, vehicle engine stalled. Dealership serviced vehicle and replaced the intake manifold.

My 1999 grand prix gt started to run rough the quit running.had the car towed to a repair shop and was informed that the intake manifold melted.that this is a common problem with this car. Gm came out with a thicker plastic part as a replacement, why have they not make a recall to reflect their defective part? *la

Vehicle idles rough, coolant is leaking from top of motor, replace intake plenum and gasket, replace spark plugs, fuel injection service.

While driving and without warning the upper intake manifoldmelted and caused fluid to leak onto the wires. *nlm

Upon starting vehicleengine back fired into the intake manifold, and blew it apart. This resulted in an engine fire.consumer sustained burns upon putting the fire out.

My 1999 gm pontiac grand prix gtp went up in flames on its own in our garage, at night.it was terrifying, scary and we're lucky that we didn't lose the house.my husband and father in law were able to drag the car out of the garage before the house went up. Fire department arrived on scene at that moment and assisted in putting out the fire.we had arrived home from my daughter's ballet performance and all went into the house and within 20 minutes the garage was engulfed in heavy smoke and flames were coming from the engine.car had been turned off for approx. 20 minutes.no warning or indication that anything was wrong at all.later after surviving this shocking event, i looked on the internet and on the edmunds.com website, i found over 10 other instances for grand prix owners that this exact same scenario had happened.some of the models were even newer than mine.2000, 2001, etc.we reported it to gm, and they have not called us back or mailed us anything.our insurance investigators did determine point of origin of fire and they firmly believe it is a manufacturer error in design.they are pursuing gm through subrogation.what does it take for a car to be recalled?someone to die?i just want other owners to know how dangerous this car can be.my car was only 5 years old, should not have done that.

While driving 35 mph the vehicle's plastic intake manifold overheatedand dropped water inside the engine.*nlm

Grand prix engine got hot, recovered, got hot, then lost engine power on the freeway (i also experienced heat exhaustion due to being broke down in 110-degree f heat.)oily sheen and orange crud noticed in radiator, discovered creamy colored motor oil. Intake manifold gasket failure has caused extensive damage to engine.this vehicle had no previous history of engine problems and was a dream to drive. $4100 for labor and engine replacement; gm service writer and mechanics acknowledge they've seen this problem many times before and that gm has re-designed both the intake manifold gasket and the manifold because of known failures in bi-metal engines; however there has been no recall. *nlm

My car has an intake manifold leak. I found orange crud in my radiator. My heater keeps blowing cold air out. It keeps lossing antifreeze from intake manifold. My temprature gage fluxes between driving and stoping. They need to make a recall on this there's to many people getting burned on it. Or maybe a class action suit!!!

Factory cd radio display works inproperly.at times when radio is on the display will not work at all.at other times what is displayed on the radio heads display is frozen or unreadable.radio has been replaced 3 times now by the dealership and it continues to do the same thing.

Plastic lenses that protect the head light bulbs have become less translucent with age. This reduces the amount of light transmission making it more difficult to read road signs which is a distraction to 'safe driving'. I have an older chrysler and it does not have this problem.a maximum opacity level for head light bulb 'protective covers' should be mandated.

A/c leaks on passenger side floor. Also a/c blower motor does not work. Wheel rims are corroded and pitted. Air bag light is on and stays on.

There is a smell coming fromair conditioner's vents. Dealership told consumerthat she hadmildew inside of air conditioner. Mechanicsprayed some spray to get rid of the smell.

Air conditioner cycles off and on in hot weather about 10 - 15 minutes after starting.the car has been in the shop 3 times and the mechanics cannot repeat the problem (even though it happens to me daily) nor determine what is causing the problem.

Automatic climate control air temperature is regulated based on ambient temperature (i.e.: if exterior temperature is 75 degrees and climate control is set to 70 - the air conditioner will engage.) the exterior temperature gauge on the automatic climate control regularly displays an inaccurate exterior temperature of less than 60 degrees (even on 100+ temperature days.) if the system reports an exterior temperature of less than 60 degrees, the air conditioner cannot be manually engaged - this malfunction renders the air conditioner useless. Furthermore, if the exterior reading is less than 60 degrees, the automatic climate control will increase the temperature of the circulating through the ventilation system (if the system thinks the temp. Is 55 degrees, even if it is actually 95 degrees - the system blows heated air.) i have had the car in to the dealer on multiple occasions - without resolution. The problem can never be duplicated. No fault of the dealer - it is a complete random (although frequent) occurrence.

The air conditioner leaked freon, which caused all of the ocupants to become ill.ts

A/c drains water inside of car on passenger floor.had car serviced 9/20/02 and was told it the a/c drain was plugged.problem is happening again 9 months later. *nlm

My fiance and i both have the same 1999 grand prix and we have both had the same problem at different times with the air conditioning leaking all over the passenger floor. The entire floor is soaked. The belt squeals extremely loud in both cars still when the fan is on whether it is the heat, air conditioning or just the fan on. This has been going on in his car for 6 months now and just started in my car about a month ago. I just find it ironic that they both came from different dealerships at different times with the same problem. I already checked into a recall and have not found one. Please contact me with any information you may have on this problem. Thank you. My fiance's vin # is [xxx] for reference purposes.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Consumer states that their was a black mold in the air condition unit and the air that came out the vents made the family sick.

Right door speaker and dashboard making rattling noise.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix. The contact stated that the turn signals would fail intermittently. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 84,000.

On july 30, 1999, i experienced total failure of headlights (high and low beam as well as "driving lights" mode).car was taken to galaxay dealership the same day.service determined the problem was failure of the "light module".a component was taken off of another new vehicle on the lot and placed on my vehicle.all seemed to work well until wednesday, august 25, 1999.i went to leave work for the day and upon staring the car, was aware that there were no dash dash lights or headlights (driving lights) again.had to drive about 30 miles in heavy rain to get the car to the dealership again, where it currently is.fortunately, it was not yet dark, however, visibility was very poor.what is going to happen (besides the obvious) when driving at 65 miles per hour, 11:00 at night on an interstate highway, and all lights decide to go out.besides the inconvenience, this has the potential of being a deadly safety/equipment defect that need immediate attention.the dealership service manager advised that the same thing has happened to4 other 1999 pontiac grand prixs through the deaership this past month.

Headlights display "mph" readout tumbles down then recovers (scrambles) with very light road vibration. 4 attempts to repair and not fixed.

Both front headlights have become scratched/cloudy. Light output is reduced. I believe that these headlight lenses are easilt scratched when cleaning debris and dirt. This has not happened on cars that i have owned that were equipped with glass headlight lenses. In addition, i believe that light output on low-beam is insufficient even when the vehicle was new.other grand prixs i have checked have the same problem with their headlights. Thirdly, the headlight assemblies are loosly fitted to the vehicle, causing the headlight pattern to shimmer when drivwen over rough roads.

I am a technician at a pontiac dealer in the boston mass. Area. Over the past few years i have personally replaced the righthand headlamp assembly on multiple 1997-2000 model year pontiac grand prixs. In all instances the clear lens has separated from the headlamp body resulting in a lamp failure. Also, i can imagine the safety threat this poses if it should occure at highway speeds, as several vehicle owners have stated that this is indeed the case. I have replaced several left hand headlamp assemblies for the same condition but most instances have been the right hand lamp.

The front headlight lens, after 5 years, has become extremely cloudy and lets less than 50% light thru it, causing the road to barely be lit up at night.i have talked to a pontiac dealer and a car repair company and both say that this is now common since changing from glass to plastic.this is a major safety hazard and no one seems to be acknowledging the problem with a recall.what could be more important than all older vehicles suffering over 50% loss of headlight light?

I have a very hard time seeing at night due to the condensation build up inside both of my headlights.when asking the dealer to have them replaced, i was informed that this would not be covered under my warranty and that it would cost nearly $300 dollars per light.they also said that replacing them would most likely result in the condensation occurring again, because it is a known problem with these head lights.

Was driving home from a trip, and shortly after filling my car up with gas, i heard a 'bang', and the engine bay burst into flames. After this happened, i pulled over, and by the time i actually stopped the car, the fire was already entering the inside of the car. By the time i exited the car, the front half was completely on fire. By the time i walked around 100 feet away from the car, the entire car was engulfed in the fire. So far it is uncertain what actually caused the fire, and it is currently being investigated by my insurance company. There was nothing that could be done to correct the failure, as the car was a total loss.i am very upset that this happened, and if my kids would have been in the car at the time of the fire, i may not have been able to get them out of the car in time. The fire spread very, very fast... I've never seen anything like it.prior to this incident, the car was trouble free, and this came as a complete surprise.i am even more upset now, because i found out that i'm not the only one who has had this problem with their pontiac grand prix gtp, infact, there are a lot of reports identical to my own. General motors really needs to step up and do something about this. This is a major safety hazard, and could easily get someone killed.

There was a loud boom and flames came to the windshield from under the hood. I pulled the car over and jumped out to safety. The engine burned and the front of the car was destroyed. Everything under the hood was destroyed. The brakes were also destroyed. The ignition didn't work but i was able to get the key out. There was no power the car.

The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix.within two weeks of purchasing the vehicle, the brake line failed.the contact pulled into her driveway and noticed that she was no longer able to brake.she took the vehicle back to the sales dealer and they repaired the failure, although she noticed in march of 2009 that the battery failed.the contact purchased another battery.the same day, the fuel pump and fuel filter malfunctioned, which the contact noticed when the vehicle was shut off.the contact had the failures replaced, but the vehicle still would not remain on.she had not taken the vehicle to the dealer or spoken with the manufacturer.the current mileage was approximately 135,700 and failure mileage was 135,533.

Consumer's vehicle used to get 324 miles to a full tank of gas, now it only gets 207 miles, the driver information center will not register digitally over 279 miles, dealership is offering little or no assistance, vehicle has been taken to dealer every other day for 2 months.nlm

My 1999 grand prix gtp when it get a little hot shut offwith no warning.

I was driving my 99 grandprix gtp that i bought about 3 weeks ago from a car dealer. I was driving around and braking pretty hard with lots of stop and go traffic. I then later went home and parked the car in the drive way. Well i moved it out of the drive way to in front of the house. About 10 mins later i heard cars outside it was 3am i ran to tell my friends people were messing with the car but then when we all returned to the window my car was on fire. I know the people that were by my car and there all really close friends none of them ever been in trouble so the only thing i can think of is the recall but me and my buddies that were inside are being threatened with arson charges. It burnt up most of the engine bay and melted some paint off the passenger side panel .

Massive fuel leak on day of taking ownership and driving 8 miles; seal replaced/repositioned.

Vehicle stalled out and died without warning, vehicle was inspected, and fuel pump was replaced, however problem has not been corrected.

Vehicle caught fire after parked. Investigation determined origin b/t fuel lines and supercharger.

The car had been setting for 10 days or so, when i tried to start it i heard a loud bang and i saw smoke. The intake manifold exploded and caught the engine on fire. My wife called911 but i got the fire put out before the firemen got here.

Vehicle idles rough, coolant is leaking from top of motor, replace intake plenum and gasket, replace spark plugs, fuel injection service.

After running for a periodof time vehicle will not restart; happened 3different times in hotweather in past 4 months and will restart after sevearl hours on it's own.pontiac dealers cannot "recreate " problem therefore, will not check why no fuel is getting to injectors. When roadside assist came they checked injections and was getting no fuel towed three times.i paid to check fuel lines and change fuel filter and battery which fuel filter did not have to be changed. Nor did the battery need to be changed.

Vehicle was idling rough on two separate occasions.took vehicle in for service, all fuel injectors have been replaced, one of them twice.vehicle still idles rough on occasion.

For several weeks, the steering in my 99 pontiac grand prix has been failling while turning left at low speeds. Suprise, suprise!! today, 7/13/03 i hit another vehicle while pulling into a car wash when i lost left turn power steering and could not avoid his car. I was turning off of a busy street and was almost rear ended as well. I am very angry, as this is the 5th time i was almost killed in my 1999 grand prix. The first 4 times were on the highway, when my car lost total engine power with no warning.after 6 weeks of having it in and out of a certified gm repair shop, and having a complete fuel system overhaul, the gm mechanic tore down everything under the hood to find that the fuel system sensor had never been attatched. Please advise on any legal action against gm that may me of benefit to me, as well as how to demand a recall on the 99 pontiac grand prix.

The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,000. Rear door courtesy/warning lights do not light or reflect. The view of the front door warning lights is also blocked when the rear door is open. The light assemblies do not reflect as the manufacture claims. This is a hazard when small children pop the rear door open at night.

Trunk ajar warning intermittently does not light. Latch assemble replaced once, it still fails. Hazardous when in heavy traffic and the trunk lid is found to be accidentally left unlatched.

We have a 1999 pontiac grand prix with a little over 100,000 miles on it.in the past month, it became more and more difficult to remove the key from the ignition.finally, we were unable to remove the key at all.we had the car checked out by a local pontiac dealer and we were told that the car could no longer recognize when the car was in park.we were told that the complete floor shifter would need to be replaced because the unit parts could not be individually fixed.we also were told that the problem could be bypassed, but that it was really a safety issue.i work with someone who also owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix with a little over 100,000 miles, and they had the same problem.my dealer told me that they are seeing a lot of this problem on the 1999 vehicles with the same mileage.it cost of $377.16 to repair this part.

Dt: the car is dying without warning. There are no lights on the dashboard that light up when this happens. After the vehicle dies, the battery light is coming on. This has been happening for over a year. The car has been in the shop over 15 times for this same problem. The car has not been fixed at this point.also, tried a different dealership, and they could find the problem either.the consumer says her car is a death trap, and this is happening anywhere/anytime. This past weekend the car died 4 times on the freeway. Consumer has to wait 15-20 minutes before the vehicle will start back up. The consumer has been in contact with gm and have registered two complaints on this car. Speed is not a factor and also dies while in park.

Engine is surging between 50-60 plus miles per hour range, pontiac dealer recommends transmission change even though car only has 60,000 miles on it.typically nothing should be done on car till over 100,000 miles.bought as used car and dealer states i should have bought extended warranty even though i didn't have money to do so, but i bought car with 40,000 miles on it.shouldn't have to replace when used for only 20,000 miles.sounds like a rip-off to me.what can we do with it and can we find out previous owners and if had problems with it before i bought it?thanks alot.

Because the vehicle had only 26,550 miles on it, owner had no reason to believe the automatic transmission should fail.the vehicle exhibited no symptoms of transmission malfunction until the trip in which the transmission failed.on the trip where the transmission failed. The car made an unusual noise and vibrated a bit when the car was placed in reverse.the same thing happened when the car was placed in drive.each time the vehicle pulled away from a stop, it made the same unusual noise and vibration.the noise and vibration subsided once the car was moving more than five or ten miles per hour.after two miles the vehicle stopped moving after pulling away from a stop.although the engine ran fine, putting the car into gear caused a now louder noise and vibration but the vehicle would not move in forward or reverse.the car had to be towed to a transmission shop.the mechanic removed the transmission pan and reported a heavy metal failure.the transmission had to be rebuilt.pontiac customer assistance said that the manufacturer would provide no financial assistance because the car was out of warranty (vehicle was purchased new 3.5 years ago. Warranty expired at 3 years) the fact that the vehicle had only 26,550 miles was not a factor.pontiac customer assistance put the owner in touch with the dealer, who said he would work with the owner if he would have the vehicle towed from the transmission specialist to the dealers facility.when asked what work with the owner meant. The dealer volunteered that although the repair at the dealers facility might cost more than at the transmission specialists facility, the dealer might be willing to pay 50% of the repair cost.because the work at the independent shop had already commenced. The owner did not take advantage of the dealers offer.dt

Intermittent transmission problems. Seems to occur more when the car is hot. Transmission "slams" when upshifting into any gear.*la

Need to repair automatic transmission on vehicle that is 4 years old and has 49000 miles.

Rpms jump 100 - 200 rpms in the matter of a second or two while car is accelerating and the car "surges" or "bucks" while rpms jump up and down. Tcc solenoid in transmission thought to be problem.

We had to have a new transmission put into the vehicle towards the end of our warranty period.after the new transmission was put in, we started having the same problems again.the problem that we have is that the car is shuttering during acceleration.you can watch the tachometer and see it bounce up and down during the shuttering.we filed under lemon law to have the car bought back from us.during the arbitration, the car would not shutter.this has always been an intermittent problem. Many times while the car was in to get serviced on this complaint, the technicians were not able to duplicate the shuttering.unfortunately, the arbitrator did not settle in our favor since we were not able to duplicate the problem.now, two years later, the problem is becoming severe again.is there anything we can do?this is the second time since we purchased the car brand new that the transmission has gone bad on us.i noticed that there was another complaint filed with the same problem.during the time that they replaced our transmission, the service manager told us that there were several other vehicles being serviced for the same thing in this region.i feel that we should have had the car bought back from us under the lemon law.unfortunately, we are now faced with the same problem again, except it's not under warranty.ts

Transmission failure at 65,000 miles. Trannmission cooler apparently blew a line puttin anti freeze through the the transmission.according to my service man a recurring problem wth pontiac grand prixs of the 1999 body style.

My grandson, age 5 was run over by my vehicle while it was parked in my driveway.although the vehicle was parked, with the gearshift placed in park, and the keys in my pocket, he was able to take the car out of gear.i was in the garage, a few feet away when i heard him crying.i turned around and saw him attempting to get out of the car - the car was rolling backwards - he fell out, and the left front wheel ran completely over his abdomen and hips.he sustained some damage to his liver and abrasions to his back.i drove him immediately to the nearest hospital in delaware, oh where he was examined in the emergency room, then mediflighted to childrens hospital in columbus, oh.he was in intensive care for 1 1/2 days, and in the hospital for 5 days total.he is also seeing a child psychologist who has diagnosed him with post traumatic disorder, and is seeing him on a regular basis.my daughter's and my concern is that gmc, though purchasing my vehicle back, and having sent an investigator down who was able to also take the car out of park when turned off with the keys removed, has yet to admit liability.we are very concerned that this could happen to another child, with even worse results.please help us see that this does not happen again!thank you for your attention to this matter.

Axle bearing went out, causing a real loudnoise. Took to dealer and they fixed the problem.also, alternator went out, and was also making anoise. Took to dea ler and they replaced power steering pump and altenator.rear window switch also went bad and stopped working, took to dealer who replaced that.

The left driveshaft seal has been replaced two times (a wear problem) it is now leaking again.infrared analysis of the transmission oil reveals fluid similar to diesel fuel mixed with it.

Car stalls on accel, transmission shifts hard in to 2nd gear

When my pontiac grand prix gtp shifts into 3rd or 4th gear under light acceleration, i experience surging.many people who i speak with say that it could be the tcc solenoid.i belong to clubgp.com.there are plenty of us on clubgp who are complaining of this same issue.going wide open throttle, it runs fine.when lightly depressing the gas pedal at around 25-30 mph, the rpm's drop to about 1500 and it seems to require an awful lot of effort to accelerate.the car simply bogs.this has happened off and on for the past 6 months.friends of mine are currently experiencing the same problem.i would like a recall done on this as this is a common problem.

Driver's side seat belt buckle would not stay latched.dealer notified, and repairswere being made..

Driver seat beltwill not latch or work, and had been replace once.currently, has the same problem.

My 1999 pontiac has a very weak retract spring on the left side front seat belt, i must be very careful to make sure that the seat belt is inside the car when i close the door. The seat belt can get caught in the door preventing the door from properly closing and locking when the car is parked, damage and soil of the belt could make the belt usless. I question the abilliy of the belt to operate properly in the case of a crash if the return spring is or has become weak.

Brake line failure occurred 3 times over a period of 3 years.the problem caused the brake pedal to the floor with little or no braking control.

The inside brake pad on both front braking systems are wearing very uneven, this uneven wear is causing the inside pads to disintegrate and causing metal to metal contact, for lack of brake pad material. This uneven wear pattern allowed the outside pad to be about 90% of new and the inside pad to be destroyed, there is a wear indicator on the outside pad that tells the operator the brakes need to be checked or replaced. Because the calipers were not functioning properly and were probably sticking(as they are suppose to sort of float)the inside pad was doing most of the braking, this one pad braking prematurely wore out the inside pad to the point of metal to metal contact, and because of the braking was mostly with one pad the rotars were also warped causing acclerated wear.the auto dealer i took it to for repar stated that this wear pattern was unusual(four other service people also stated this at this dealership)but said that no service bullitans were issued and they felt they had no liability. A regional service manager from general motors was in the dealership at the time, inspected the bad parts and stated this wear pattern is very unusual, but still declined to accept any liability. It is extremely dangerous to operate a vehicle that can prematurely destroy its braking system. I have contacted and shown other certified brake techs this and also contacted other gen. Motors emplyees about this problem and was told to contact the agencies in my owners manual. The general motors area service managers name who would not fully accept liability name and phone # is as follows:don j. Stevens, area service mngr. The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the brake pedal slowly traveled to the floor upon engagement, with the illumination of the brake warning indicator. When the brake pedal was applied, the vehicle failed to reduce speed after numerous attempts. Immediately, the emergency brake was engaged to stop the vehicle. The contact resumed operation. The vehicle was inspected and the master cylinder reservoir was empty. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they replaced the front and rear brake lines as a result of rust. The contact was in the process of notifying the manufacturer of the brake defect. The approximate failure mileage was 64,000.

Complete brake failure occurred at a high-volume intersection at logan ave., and rt.20 in belvedere il. While approaching intersection on a yellow light, with no one in front of me, i applied the brakes, heard a popping sound and the brake pedal went all the way down to the floor board. I had enough room to apply the emergency brakes, and came to a complete stop before entering the intersection. I had my sister and 92 year old aunt in the car. Car was towed to wolf pontiac in belvedere, il, mechanic told me that the 'steel' brake line had rusted out, and burst. We had all the brake lines replaced for approx $900. We could have had serious injury/death had we entered the intersection. This is a serious example of an engineering defect! we live in the salt belt, and any design that would lead to a rust-out situation on a critical part of the braking system is inexcusable. It is probably cheaper than putting in brake lines that would be rust resistant, but i guess profit is more important that the safety of its passengers. We were very lucky! i called gm, and of course they were apologetic, but the same thing is going to happen to other drivers of their technology. The owner of the car, is my aunt, who was a passenger

The abs systems engages while driving and not pressing the brake pedal. You can hear the abs systems trying to engage and then the abs and trac off lights come on in the dash. This is deactivating my abs system. I have had a faulty abs sensor replaced and it fixed the problem for about three months. It has now started up again. I have looked at numerous message boards to find a fix for the problem and was extremely concerned to see that thousands of grand prix owners are having similar issues and gm is doing nothing to fix it... Except charge $1300 and still not fix the problem.

While driving the abs light on the insterment panel lit and remained on (not flashing). Later when the car was restarted the light was off. After driving a few miles the light again light and remained on. I notified the dealer service dept. Of the problem and an appointment was made. The dealer informed me the ( left front wheel speed sensor wireing harness was broken ) a new part was ordered. When i returned home i looked for myself and noticed the harness from the wheel sensor was rubbed almost in two. The harness is located in such a place that when the wheels are turned all the way to right the left tire tire rubbed the harness.these are the the original wheels and tires from the manufacture. Any additinal information you may need please feel from to contact me. Thank you. Alan zeller.

After driving in the rain brakes will not work effectively for 2-3 seconds after application.has occurred several times since new.was told by dealer that this was normal.it is a very dangerous situation to be exiting an expressway after a 10 mile drive and have this occur in light rain.

The rear wheel speed sensor wire bundles (left and right side) ride the edge of sharp metal cutouts as the wiring passes outside ofthe vehicle feedthru grommets.

Front brakes keep going out and lock up.

Disc brakes are grinding - metal to metal.there is a problem with the disc brake system.it is hanging up on the inside of the disc brakes.it is causing the back side of the disc on all four wheels to "groove" the rotor, with the worst being in the rear of the vehicle.

Rear brake pads worn causing a metal to metal noise.

This complaint is not necessarily concerning the absolute failure of a component, but rather the repeated need to replace, what i consider to be, a critical safety related component. First of all the need to replace the front rotors prior to taking delivery of the vehicle in march '99, and then the need to replace the rear rotors in october '00, with a little over 15,000 miles on the vehicle. No explanation was given by pontiac. My correspondence to pontiac in response to a customer service survey, yielded merely a telephone message that confirmed basically what i had told them regarding the two times rotors were replaced, implying to me that "i can expect to replace rotors on the vehicle every 15,000 miles. To me that indicates that pontiac are esentially unwilling to admit to a quality, and more importantly, critical safety problem in a component of their product.

My vehicle, a 1999 pontiac grand prix gt, loses power steering when turning left (only left turns - not right turns).it is extremely difficult to make a left hand turn.i need to pull hard with both hands to get my steering wheel to turn.sometimes when the steering does not respond, i am forced to discontinue my left turn, put my car in reverse, back up the vehicle, and try again because the steering does not work when turning left.on more than one occasion i have almost hit another vehicle because the steering wheel has not responded while i was driving.i have called the gm owner hotline several times to no avail. Of interest.the 1998 grand prix is being recalled for this exact same problem.after several phone calls to gm, they have still not even agreed to look at my vehicle.i took it upon myself to bring my vehicle to an accredited gm pontiac retailer and i paid to have the vehicle looked at and the problem diagnosed. The man at the dealership provided a written quote describing the problem that the 1998 grand prix is being recalled. Unfortunately, gm won't listen to me because my vehicle is a 1999, which is not being recalled.

The steering gets extremely difficult when turning to the left.it's as if there is no power steering.it is intermittent, which makes it very unsafe to turn the car, not knowing when it's going to happen.i have not taken steps to correct the failure yet, waiting for gm to repair under a recall similar to 1997 and 1998's.

My 1999 pontiac gran prix gt looses the power steering when turning left, right is ok. At a standstill, it is nearly impossible to turn left so the car has to be in motion to turn.it is not smooth, but jerky and the force varies thru the turn. It is definetly a handful on a windy day, when more effort is required in one direction than the other.i haven't been to a dealer yet, because they can't squeeze me in on a day i'm not traveling.

When turning steering wheel in either direction there is a clicking sound. Consumer can also feel this clicking on steering wheel. Vehicle has been in for repairs 9 times. Dealer replaced the struts and supports, the rack and bearings. Has not remedied the problem.

Vehicle began to run rough. Then immediately lost power steering and stalled. The engine died followed by flames from under both sides of the hood. No smoke was seen before the fire began. No lights came on to indicate a problem. In no time, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. The car was a total loss.

Consumer lost power steering when making left turns.*phvehicle's rack and pinion is failing causing loss of power steering.*mr

Intermittentlyvehicle's lost power steering while driving. When this occurredsteering wheel became tight, making it difficult to steer.dealership indicated this was due to an internal gear box leak, and the entire assembly was replaced.the cause of the leak was undetermined.

While making a slow turn vehicle showed no power steering. Please provide further information.

The power steering was not functioning properly when making right or left turns at slow speeds.took to the dealer and they said the power steering pump was bad.

Excessively loud high pitch whine from power steering pump while turning steering wheel.

Axle bearing went out, causing a real loudnoise. Took to dealer and they fixed the problem.also, alternator went out, and was also making anoise. Took to dea ler and they replaced power steering pump and altenator.rear window switch also went bad and stopped working, took to dealer who replaced that.

A clunk is felt in the steering wheel when making a right turn. In repeated trips tothe dealer, they can find nothing wrong.the right side outer right tie rod has been replaced but the problem persists. The dealer now claims this clunk is normal.

Consumer indicated while driving she went to turnvehicle around and heard a pop. Tie rod disengaged, causing atire to separate from vehicle.

Consumer states while driving the vehicle and make left turnsteering will make hard to do it. A recall has been issued on similar makes and models. The contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix. While driving 5 mph and making a left turn the steering wheel became difficult to control; however, it functioned normally when the contact made a right turn.the wheel bearings and rack and pinion fell off of the vehicle while it was parked.the contact has reviewed, recall nhtsa campaign id number 02v286000, steering, rack and pinion. The contact has experienced the identical failures listed in the recall. The dealer stated that there were no recalls related to his vin. The rack and pinion was repaired at the owners expense. The failure mileage was 150,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.

Dt:the contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix. He found recall 02v2860000concerning rack and pinion steering on the 1998 grand prix.the contact's vehicle was experiencing exactly the sameproblemas described in the recall but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.when he turningthe steering wheel to the left it feltas if the steering was going to lock. At low speeds it took a lot of effort to turn the wheel. When turning the wheel to the left it feltas if it wanted to pull back very fast to the right. The dealer said they cannot do anything about it since itwas not included in the recall. Also, the contact talked to the manufacturer, and they told him the same thing.the contact noticed this problem when he bought the car last month.

1999 pontiac grand prix rack and pinion problems. Steering locking up in both directions during slower speeds and sharp steering. The gm recall needs to be extended until all year models affected are identified.

Vehicle experienced loss of power steering when turning left at very low speeds.*mr ph

When turning to the left, the steering wheel stiffens/locks into a certain postion.this usually happens at low speeds.i feel that this presents a safety hazard due to the fact that i cant complete a turn in the manner i need.this has been a noted problem in the '97 to '99 model year grand prix.

Rack and pinion steering went out. Consumer indicated that steering was okay when turning right but when turning leftconsumer lost power steering.he took thevehicle to the mechanic, and themechanic found the rack and pinion steering had failed.

Steering in my 1999 grand prix gt failed in that it is extremely difficult to turn to the left (such as with no power steering) and appears to turn normally or power assisted to the right. This problem appeared suddenely and has not changed since it first appeared.a talk with a local pontiac service manager says the problem symptoms are exactly the same as in the 1998 grand prix which were recalled for bearing failure in the rack and pinion.pontiac customer service states that no recall is in effect at this time for my vehicle and seemed more concerned that we had unofficially talked to a service advisor about the problem rather than having an official service visit to repair/diagnois the problem.they advised to take the care to a dealer as soon as possible to have the problem documented but stated that there would be a charge for the diagnosis. The repair has not been completed as yet and the car remains "off the road" in hopes that something can be worked out with pontiac.

The power steering failed when a left turn was made, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the consumer's vehicle year was not included.

Rack and pinionsteering failed while making a right turn at 10 mph or less. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

I lost power assist steering when making right-hand turns.fortunately this occurred at a low enough speed where i was able to aviod an accident.this is a saftey hazard because it became very difficult to complete a right handed turn.a dealer diagnosed the problem as a failed rack and pinion assembly and replaced the assembly.

Rack and pinion assembly came apart at 60,000 miles.could not turn left.same problem as other recalled gm cars (97 lumina).

Was unable to turn left at low speeds almost causing accident with oncoming traffic as i turned into my street.thought it was temporary, but found i had to muscle the car just to turn left except over 35 or so mph.i became scared to drive the car and brought it to the deal.they said it was the result of 'salt damage' to my car from road salt that deteriorated the rack and pinion.i told them they were wrong.(i am in the military and live in mississippi, but have illinois plates.they assumed i lived up there, but the truth is, i have never lived in illinois since purchasing the car!!!its been on a salted road maybe twice!)i am very disappointed.

Vehicle wont turn in reverse, cause steering rack binding internally, gear assembly and power steering short replace.

The steering makes a loud creaking noise when the steering wheel is turned left or right. The crecking noise is louder when the car is driven further otherwise the noise is intermittent.

I have a 1999 pontiac grand prix that has had the same problem listed in your campaign id number 02v286000.pontiac needs to extend this recall to the 1999 models before someone get injured.the steering went out when my wife (who at the time was 9 months pregnant) was heading to a doctors appointment.we were lucky that she was pulling in the parking lot when it happened.

Rack and pinion steering on 1999 grand prix showing evidence of failure / binding consistant with that of 1997-1998 grand prix.

1999 pontiac grand prix-having to replace rack and pinion and power steering pump.cost.....1500 dollars.gm has issued recalls for 1997 and 1998 models, but not 1999.parts are the same.

1999 pontiac grand prix. Power steering failure left turn only and is intermittent. Incidents started december of last year. Several times it has put me in the point of danger making left turns and not knowing when it will be extremely hard to turn and when it will be normal. Several times during a hard turn the normal steering will return in the middle of the turn jerking my car violently further to the left. No accidents to date. I researched the failure to find out that there is a current recall for rack and pinion bearing failure (recall # 02v286000) for 1997 and 1998 pontiac grand prix's only. I have called several dealerships in my area and they all say it is the same parts but cannot fix it under the recall as my car is a 1999 model. If it is the same parts and the same failure, why will general motors honor the claim?

Grand prix gtp 1999 has a rack and pinion problem the steering would act like there was no power to it when turning left- right turn worked ok. There was a recall on 1998 grand prix that did the exact same thing.this is a safety issue for women drivers especially. They would not expect to suddenly have a problem making a left hand turn. Once this happens it stays that way till you replace the rack and pinion.

The steering has hung up (lack of power assist) turning left at slow speeds (3) times. Worked o.k. After it popped.it has popped (3) other times when vehicle has been started with little or no movement of the vehicle.

No summary listed for abov evehicle.

Dt: contact stated while driving andturning to the left the steering felt like it stuck.the vehicle waschecked, and it was discoveredthat thedefect wasrack and pinion steering.

Consumer was informed, no parts were available regarding the recall on the rack and pinion.

Steeringwheel locked only when making a left turn.dealer stated the rack and pinion steering was defective.

Trouble turning to the right, resulting in control lost over the right hand turns, mechanic said the rack and pinion steering is not working

1999 pontiac grand prix has same steering problem recalled in the 1998 pontiac grand prix.

Power steering is very hard to turn whenmaking a left turn. Consumer stated that a recall was issued on the 1997 and 1998 pontiac, grand prix. Took vehicle to a mechanic, who determined that consumer needed a rack and pinion, which would cost consumer about $800.00.

At 54,000 miles, the steering rack on my 1999 pontiac grand prix had to be replaced because it became very difficult to make a left turn as the steering wheel required high force to move to the left.

Steering: rack and pinion, currently own a 1999 grand prix, and had to have the steering rack assembly replaced, the problem that occured is the same problem that was recalled in the 1997, and 1998 model grand prixsnhtsa campaign id number 02v286000.summary:certain passenger vehicles and mini vans have lower pinion bearings in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly. These and some other retainers used in vehicles assembled between january 1, 1996 and october 31, 1997, could fail and permit the ball bearings to escape. Consequence:if this occurs, the pinion shaft can be forced upward during left turns and back down as the steering wheel is moved back and to the right. If the pinion shaft moves further, the driver will need to exert more effort to turn the steering wheel, similar to a vehicle without power assisted steering. If the pinion shaft moves even further, the driver will require much higher effort to turn left and may not be able to turn the wheel as much as intended. With the maximum pinion shaft movement, which requires internal gear component damage, the driver can encounter high resistance to turning left, followed by unintended power assist to the right. In any of these conditions, a crash could occur.

Water leaking into car, front passenger side.

On april 30, 2012, i took my car to be inspected and i was told the sway bar was cracked and needed replaced. After calling many junk yards to look for a used one, i am finding out that this is a common problem among these vehicles. I have called just about every junk yard within 30 miles of me and constantly am told "we have quite a few but they are all cracked on the passenger side" which is where mine is cracked. Seeing that this is part is used not only on the grand prixs but other gm passenger cars and mini vans, i feel that since this is a safety issue, it needs recalled.

While making a turn, heard loud clunking noise. Took car to mechanic, discovered outer end of sway bar on passenger side broke clean through, just before bolt. Car only had 45,500 miles.

Consumerheard a knocking noise, and took the vehicle to the dealer. It was found that the sway bar broke in half.

Dt: the contact stated while attempting to make a turn there was a popping noise that came from underneath the vehicle.he pulled the vehicle into garage and inspected underneath the vehicle.he discovered the sway barbroke.he contacted the manufacturer, and they offered no assistance inthe repair of the vehicle.the contacttook the vehicle to a dealer.the service mechanic determined the sway bar broke because it was hollow, the previous design on earlier models was solid.no repairs have been madedue to the excessive cost.updated 01/05/06.

Front driver side noise coming from suspension. Took car to midas, problem found left front sway bar mount had broken and was no longer attached to the frame. Replaced front sway bar, cost $400 parts and labor.

The failure mileage was 150,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.

Right rear spring broke. No load in vehicle and no rust on spring. Started rattling, first week in june, thought it was the stabilizer links which had been replaced on the front about one year ago.the rattle was the bottom coil of the spring. It could have the tire, so i installed the compact spare to allow more clearance.took the car to pepboys where the front links and alignment was done last fall.they estimated the repair at over $600.00 to include both rear springs. Maybe all the springs are bad, but your data base does not show and information regarding this problem.so, i replaced the one spring and stabilizer link and the car continues to steer correctly.

Left rear strut shock leaking bad.

Dt:when the consumer applied the brakes, a metal sound was heard.the dealer said they could not find anything wrong, when the car broke down it was towed to meinke muffler shop and they saw the problem right away. They saved the defective parts. When pointed out to dealer they saw the problem.2 different dealers said this never happens and they felt it was a safety issue.manufacturer said for the dealer to call but the dealer will not call manufacturer.

Trailing arm broke in half for no reason. Looks like metal just ripped in half. I have the part that was taken off the car and replaced by the dealer under extended warranty. I was forced to pay for an alignment even though the only reason the car needed one was because the trailing arm failed. I have no confindence in the safety of this car. If i had been driving on the freeway at freeway speeds i would have lost control and possibly wrecked seriously injuring myself and possibly any other motorist around me.. Dealer could not explain why this happened. The gm hotline was no help, they told me that they were sorry i have no confidence in the car and suggestedthat i get it checked periodically at the dealer. I asked to have a gm rep inspect my car and they refused. If the right side trailing arm broke for no reason it is only normal to suspect that the left side trailing may do the same thing.

My tire caught a chuck hole and pulled me down into a gully and i hit trees head on. I wore my seat belt but have injuries to my left side. My air bag never deployed. My speed was 35 mph.

Consumer's vehicle used to get 324 miles to a full tank of gas, now it only gets 207 miles, the driver information center will not register digitally over 279 miles, dealership is offering little or no assistance, vehicle has been taken to dealer every other day for 2 months.nlm

The car problem is that when making a complete stop, the car will take off and then when the car is moving the motor will shut off.i was almost hit in 3 different occasions, the car will just go off without any warning, and after shutting off, i have to restart the car fast.gmc is aware of the problem i even have a file number with them, and greenwood auto center cannot find the problem with the car.before greenwood auto center i took it to another dealer and they could not find the problem either.i consider the car to be unsafe to drive because i never know when the motor is going to go off, and i'm afraid i'm going to be hit by another vehicle.i have all the papers of the repairs and the persons i have talk toin gmc, and as oftodaythey still don't know what is wrong with the car.but gmc and greenwood auto centerare aware that the car is unsafe to drive.

I am reporting a pontiac grand prix gt. It has had a acceieration problem since i started driving it. I had it sent to a pontiac dealership to be looked at for several weeks and they say the problem cannot be fixed because of the softwere being bad in that model.i contacted general m otors about the problem, they say they cannot do anything to fix it. I am now finding reports on the same issue occuring in the same model cars all over. I was told this is true and is happening in cars from the year 98-99. They know of the problem and will not do anything to correct it. I don't see how they can make a car and know the problem that is their fault, that they even know about and will not correct. I am getting more information on this problem concerning this car and the software and will be contacting my lawyer and the company i have my loan thru. I work to hard to have a vehicle, it is very expensive to own a car and i will make sure that it runs the way it is ment to. I will not take the answer i was given from them as a solution. What they said is not a way to fix a problem with a vehicle. Someone should not have to die or become badly hurt before it is taken care of. Please contact me with any information that may help in getting this taken care of. My e- mail is [email protected]. I thank you for your support.

Intermittently vehicle stalls out and dies. Also, while driver applies brakes and depressesaccelerator slightly, vehicle surges forward unexpectedly.the dealer has inspected the vehicle several times, and has not been able to duplicate or correct the problem.*ml

My daughter was driving the vehicle when it quit properly accelerating. She brake and pulled to the side of the road and turned the car off. When she called to tell me she had broken down, she noticed flames coming from the good. She exited the vehicle and called 911. The entire engine was engulfed in flames. The car is a total loss. Fire department informed of a recall we were not aware of. Gm denies that the car is part of a recall.

Dt:the contact stated the power window on the rear passenger side would not operate.this window was not used often.the window was stuck in the upward position and would not move.when pressing the button. There was no noise coming from the power window motor.the motor has not been replaced.

Right front power window failure.

Automatic electric passenger side window and left rear window "fall" down and and will not go back up. Have to tape each window up making then inoperative..tech removed door panel on rear door and says the promlem is not the switch or motor but a broken wooden pulley(made in mexico) that allows the cable to slip off andwon't allow the motor to drive the window back up..clearly a manufacturer's defect from a cheap window operating system on an expensive car..gm engineers should be ashamed of themselves for changing to this type of cheap device from the proven sprocket and teeth drive mechanism so tried and true..another example of "cheaper is not better" philosophy..this window repair/replacement should rest on gm/pontiac shoulders, not mine...john n hart.

Passenger's window works intermittently, not rolling up or down.

Consumer complained about apower window problem.the motor regulator was replaced once. However,it needed to be replaced again. Warranty expired.

Right rear power window is inoperative (failure).replaced window regulator for the 2nd time.

Dt:the contact stated all of the power windows except the front driver's window failed to operate.the windows were not used often.the power windows were stuck in the up position and would not move.when pressing thebuttons there was no noise coming from the power window motors.the independent repair shop replaced the three window motors that failed on january 6, 2006.

Right rear power winow is inoperative (failure).

Axle bearing went out, causing a real loudnoise. Took to dealer and they fixed the problem.also, alternator went out, and was also making anoise. Took to dea ler and they replaced power steering pump and altenator.rear window switch also went bad and stopped working, took to dealer who replaced that.

I have had multiple failures of the windows being stuck down(both at diff. Times) this is not an issolated incident. It is a very common problem with this car between 1997 and 1999. Although it may not seem to be directly a hazardous problem, it can be if in an accident(roll over)as an arm, or entire body may be thrown from the car if the windows were down. As small of a fraction of a possibility that that may be, it is still a possible problem that could have been avoided if the driver had the option to roll the windows up. This is a known problem by pontiac and will not be addressed. Even the replacement motors fail, they refuse to replace mailfunctioning motors unless they fail while at the service shop.(it is an intermitent problem).

Also, besides (2) power window motors failing, (2) blower (air) motors have failed.i

Both electric windows stopped working (car is 2-door) and require replacement.pass. Window stopped working 2 months ago; driver's window stopped working last week. Replacement is going to cost me over $600 (parts & labor).

1999 grand prix purchased used in 2002.in fall 2003, one power window failed and had to be replaced.in august 2004, a second power window failed and had to be replaced.in september 2004, a third power window failed.it is stuck in the up position and has not yet been replaced.

Driver's side windshield wiper quits moving and the passenger side wiper keeps going, thus, running into and bending the driver's side wiper.this has happened three times despite taking it to a dealer for repair.tightening the nut that holds the wiper arm on appears to be an effective temporary fix.

Consumer statedthat when they turned the windshield wipers on, the wipers flew off the vehicle. Dealer notified. Ts

Interior sunroof molding is wraped.yh

Consumer states that the sunroof on the vehicle shattered while the driving, there is nothing that hit the roof. Contacted dealer and the dealer is not willing to do anything.

Windshield wipers work intermittently during operation, vehicle has been intodealer shop on three occasions, and problem still reoccurring.consumer stated during a snow storm the driver side wipers flipped 5 times then the wiper hit the other wiper bending it, consumer stated this is the third time this has happened.

The vehicle experienced the same problem with windshield wipers as stated in recall # 99 v 348 000, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.

Consumer was driving on state highway 64 ,going west in hurricane rain, and drivers side windshield wiper stopped working. Passenger's side kept working, was getting tangled up.

Car was parked in driveway after driving to town and back.about 20 minutes later my boyfriend heard a pop sound from inside the house.when he looked outside the car was on fire under the hood.fire department was called to help put out the fire.car was completely burned under the hood, tires/front part of car were also burned.damage was a total loss, engine was burning so hot it was white.nearly caused a house fire and luckily no one was injured.car had some oil leakage in engine/manifold area but recall was fixed about 5 years ago for this issue.car was in good condition and no serious problems before this fire occurred.

The neighbor knocked on our door and told my husband the car was on fire.the fire appeared to start under the hood. The whole front of the car, including the winshield was burned.

Consumer noticedevery day a low pressure on the left tire. Took vehicle to good tire shopand technician found a hair line crack on the wheel. Dealer has been notified nothing they can do warranty is over. Please provide further information. Ts

Driving down the highway my 1999 pontiac grand prix developed a low hum in the front end which fairly quickly - within 30 miles - escalated to a substantial rumble/roar.i then experienced a sudden and pronounced wobble.i pulled into the breakdown and eventually found that 4 of the 5 studs holding the right front wheel on were gone.the studs were sheared off down to the rotor.there was little in the way of warning.no change in driving characteristics in days prior to the incident.on the day of the incident, i did note a rotational 'ticking' sound, which i thought might be a stone caught in my treads.after driving for approximately 60 miles, i stopped for gas and checked: no stone.leaving the station, i noted a faint thump, both heard and felt in the pedal, when braking but it did not seem like an acute situation.it was approximately 20 miles later that the failure manifested.i suspect this 'thumping' was because one or more studs had already failed and the wheel was now not secured properly. A repair shop said if the lugs had been loose, there would be a characteristic wear on the wheel.this was not present. This shop replaced the 4 sheared studs. Cartalk radio show hosts suggested over-torque as a possible cause, and suggested i get other lugs inspected immediately.i took the car to a tire shop.they inspected the remnants of the studs i had the other shop save.they indicated that in their experience, failure due to over torque leaves a characteristic pattern on the metal, which was not present.inspection confirmed no pattern characteristic of loose lugs was present.they were not able to determine the torque on the other lugs on the other tires but doubted over torque as the cause. I have the remainders of the sheared studs avail for inspection and/or analysis.i am contemplating replacing all 15 remaining studs just for piece of mind. I will retain those parts should i have them replaced.

Lugs:nuts and bolts sheared off the front right tire, causing front right hand side of the car to fall down on pavement. The wheel rolle dforward and struck another car.

1999 grand prix right front tire came to rest on the undercarriage and suspension.5 lug studs snapped off.

Problem with right wheel studs breaking off. Problem occurred on two occasions, repair made at dealer. Please provide any further details on this matter.
