Electronics problem in dashboard.

This is sencond grand prix i have had and the low fuel light and the engine check gauge lights are on and will not go off. I took it to the dealer, and they had told me that it was a problem with 99% of grand prix. He said it had to do with the wiring in behind the tack board (the display of speed, rpm, temp, etc.) he said it was common but it doesnt hurt anything with them being on. The problem is that getting fixed is very expensive. I need to know if there is a recall for this or what i have to do to report this problem with the electrical work for this car.

Check gauges light is on continuously even though now problem exists.once in awhile the light will go out but only for a short period of time.minutes only before coming back on and staying lit.i am very concerned about a warning a system warning light that is defective and is not backed with a repair covered by the manufacturer.

Intermittently while drivingheadlights go off for a couple of seconds to a minute, and then go back on.this happens without any kind of warning.dealer was notified about the problem.dealer stated that no open recall was issued on the vehicle.problem has not been corrected.

While driving on the road at 65 mph, the headlights failed;the driving lights also failed at the same time. I checked with the manufacturer about a recall for this problem and there was none listed for this year. There was a recall for similar problem that only went back to the 1994 model.the service manager at dealrship informed me that this was a fairly common occurance in grand prixs, olds cutless, and whatever the buick model based on the same platform is. They indicated that it is a faulty hi/low beam switch in the stalk with the cruise control. Apparently not enough of these have been reported in my model year to effect a recall, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous to drive.

Intermittently whileusing the turn signalsmoke will come out of the steering column. It is a burning smell, but not a fire.also, low beams work intermittently.

As near as i can tell, the problem is related to one or more tsbs that have been issued.but it appears to be specifically related to tsb #676303 - phantom stalls at closed throttle and high engine load.this problem poses a serious safety threat.in detail what happens is that the engine stalls when you approach an intersection and are shifting down, using brakes, and turning.when the engine quits in a turn, the power steering quits.anyone with slow reactions or lacking the physical strength to steer the car without power is in for a serious accident.the problem is especially troubling because it is intermittent.my mechanic says"we'll just have to wait until it quits completely to find out what it is."i certainly believe that any defect such as this is an extreme hazard to the driver and passengers of this car as well as anyone else on the streets at the time.

I entered my auto on the evening of 10/4/00 at 8:10pm and turned key to start.i did not at any time depress gas pedal.after engine started, i allowed rpm's to setttle down and put my foot on the brake.put transmission in "reverse" and let up on the brake.the immediately started moving in reverse in an uncontrolled acceleration (s?).i set my foot on the brake and there was no response.the brake pedal did not move.the car kept speeding up until it hit a tree, broadside.the total distance was about 20-25 feet, but the car was "totalled."this is the 2nd time this has happened, except on the previous occasion, the auto stopped in about 3 feet.two times since the purchase of the auto, i have had to stop suddenly and, it seemed to me, that the brakes worked the way abs brakes are suppose to, but i'm not sure.a witness who saw the accident estimated that the automobile was racing in reverse about 20-30 mph, before it struck the tree, but only a guess. I have a 1991 pontiac grand prix w/ a 3.4l v-6 and i have been having problems w/ the brake system since 1999.i was driving down the street and the brakes would work one second and not the next ( would get really stiff and firm, no assist), so a couple days later it just went stiff for good.i decided to check the car for the brake fuses and found the abs pump fuse had burnt out.i replaced andas soon as i stepped on the brake it went soft for a split second and then stiff again.had a friend watch the fuse and he said as soon as i stepped on the brake it blew the fuse.no matter what i do i can not fix this issue and the dealership is trying to charge me a couple thousand dollars for the booster that is faulty.this is such a popular issue her in washington that people constantly keep an eye out for these cars in the junk yard so they can have first chance at pulling the units out to fix faulty ones.there needs to be a recall on this no matter how old the car is!i have over $8,000 dollars under the hood to keep it and still cant fix this issue.

I was driving down a main road (speed limit 55 mph) when my steering went completely out, the steering wheel spun in either direction without stopping w/no action at tires.luckily i was able to brake and maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder.upon further investigation i realized the only reason i was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder by pressing the brakes is because the drivers side rear cradle bolt on the drivers side was missing which caused the engine and entire front end to drop and twist to the right when the brake was applied.there aremany vehicle traffic deaths on this road every year and luckily i wasn't another statistic.my reason behind this complaint is i have noticed that the nhtsa has issued a recall on this problem (campaign #00v189000).upon learning this i took the vehicle up to the dealer to remedy the problem and was informed that the vehicle did not fall under the recall because the vin # is one number off (i.e. Pontiac issued the recall for vins up to mf23 and my vin is mf24).this information is located on gm's document, id# 792186.my complaint is this:the problem has occurred to my car, i live in michigan, it's a 1991, i could have lost my life and i feel it's all attributed to poor engineering on gm's behalf, they have recognized that, but for the sake of saving money, my vehicle (one number off on the vin), was not included on the recall, yet the problem still exists.the service department was very combative when addressing my problem and not very concerned, even though it could of been one of their wives or daughters i crashed head on into because of poor engineering and an obvious problem that was not completely addressed in all grand prixs that were manufactured in 1991 and registered in the state of michigan.

The bolts that hold the back end of the motor cradle corroded through and the engine fell as described in the description of gm campaign 00061, including the steering shaft separating so that the car became . The vin of my vehicle places it as about 4000 units after the end of the recall.

The cradle bolts deteriorated causing the engine to drop down and the steering wheel to lean.*mjs

While turning into an alley, the bolts broke holding cradle under engine.engine dropped down and pulled out steering shaft.resulted in no steering and engine almost laying on street. Was a recall in 97 and 2000, due to corrosion of rings and retainer.corrosion being linked to salt on roads.no warning this was a problem.my grand prix 1991 has only 70,000 miles on it and kept in garage.pontiac said my car isnt included in recall due to vin number.towed to pontiac dealership and was told parts could only be ordered through dealer.parts $1,300. Labor-total $1,600 plus tax.told them to forget it unless recall would cover it, of course it wouldn't.towed to another garage.they are replacing front and rear bolts and fixing problem it caused to the steering.$500 total.

Consumer stated that while driving the bolts securing the engine cradle pulled through resulting in loss of steering control.related recall 97v058000.consumer's v.i.n. Is not included.*nlm

I have come to understand that there was a series of pontiac vehicles that were recalled due too poor painting.i am unware if this is true and needed to know if this was correct or not.i currently have a 91 grand prix and when i bought the car there was a problem with the paint peeling off very badly on the trunck, roof, as well as the hood.i actually was just looking for someone who would be able to help me in letting me know anything.i would greatly appreciate any informaiton you can give me.thank you in advance for your time.

Problem with oil pressure gauge.

Cruise control malfunctioned.

(dot number: n/atiresize: n/a)

While leaving the driveway the vehicle accelerated suddenly and would not stop when the abs brakes were applied.please describe.

The alternator/starter go out every 6 months, the fuel pump has been replaced 8 times, the left turn signal does not blink, the brakes go out every 6 months, i think there was a recall on the brake system.the power steering has to be refilled every 100 miles.the drivers side power window does not work.the window is down about an inch and will not go up or down.

Drivers side window motor failed twice.

The drivers side door will not open.i thought it was the fusebut its not, when i leave the fuse in when the door does not open the interior lights stay on, i remove the fuse the lights go our.it appears that the handle comes detached some how. It will not open from inside or out using the key or not using the key.i am sure i am not the first owner to have this problem, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Windshield wipers do not operate on high speed setting, causing poor visibility.

Donut spare tire rim failed after driving through a 1/2-inch deep pot hole within10 feet of where i had a flat with the full size tire. Rim was bent beyond repair.if i would have had the spare tire on the highway i would have damaged car.if auto makers are so concerned about safety why do they give you a tiny spare tire and tiny jack that barely holds the car up?the rim collapsed the same year i bought the new car.seventeen years later i had the jack slide out from under my car and the car fell on my leg and i have lasting bruise marks from the injury.
