1998 pontiac grand am.consumer writes in regards to vehicle engine made an unusual noise, when she started it.the consumer stated she turned the ignition off, thinking the noise would stop, but it did not. She took the keys out of the ignition and it continued to make the sound. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop. They made a temporary fix. However, there was a campaign on the vehicle. Either the dealer did not fix the recall on the ignition switch or it wasnot fixed properly. The local repair shop advised the consumer, to take the vehicle to the dealer. Once at the dealer, they stated there was nothing wrong with the ignition switch and it was a computer problem.

General motors need to recall their vehicles to diagnosis this major issue. My case number with gm1382341310however, they wont assist me and said they are closing my case. I informed them not to i am not done with this issue with them... This is a very serious problem or defect with my general motors pontiac grand am se 3.1l v6 engine in this vehicle. I have had, 3 intake manifold gasket failures in less than 40,000 miles, the first occurring at approx 24,000 miles the second at approx 27,000 miles and now again at 40,000 miles but i have suspected the anti-freeze i have been smelling in the cab when i turn the heater blower on, is somehow connected to this leak. Which means its been leaking for some time just not bad enough to drip onto the ground bringing my attention to it. I am only one of thousands of victims that general motors has raped financial over the years. The repeated failures of the intake manifold gasket started long ago and due to the numerous complaints to the bbb and gm you would think that would be enough to alarm general motors that they are having a major issue, and they should of began a recall of their vehicles long ago. In the year 2002 they couldn't supply enough intake manifold gaskets to keep up with the gm vehicles that needed repair either under warranty or out of warranty. I have had other major non-related repairs to my vehicle as well, 19,693 miles the sway bar bushings had to be replaced, alternator was replaced, heater core replaced, the rack and pinion steering rod replaced. Now my car and many thousands of other gm owners vehicles are out of warranty and gm won't stand behind their own vehicles, even though work was done repeatedly under warranty on my vehicle. I am currently 3 years out of warranty but only 12,900 approx miles since they did the last repair on my intake manifold gaskets. I believe a class action suit is the only thing general motors corporation will respond to.

Alternator failed. Mjs

In aug. 2004 my 1998 pontiac grand am se caught fire in the steering columnand fried everything in the column , alternator, and battery.the local pontiac dealer refused to work on the carso i took it to a local garage.they fixed what they could clearly see was damaged and sent me on my way. Since then i have had to have the alternator rebuilt four times and batteryreplaced three times .the car has to be jumped several times a week. The alternator kicks in at 800 rpm. And the car idles at 500 rpm.( computer controlled) meaning that the battery is constantly discharging below 35 mph, or with the air and everything on .when it goes above 800rpm the alternator kicks in and boils the battery trying to play catch up. I received a recall notice may 2005 (#04002) and took the car to the gm dealer in batesville,ar.i told them about the fire and damage .they changed the relay and wire under the recall and advised that they could not fix the damage done by the fire,or even check and diagnois the damage still existing, without approval from g.m. . icontacted g.m. (mike demeyer) and was iinformed that they would pay for the damage that was fixed by the local garage ,but would not pay to finish fixing the rest of the damage that was not fixed.

Seems a few weeks after i purchased my vehicle i started noticing malfunctions wrong with my pontiac grand am.i brought in my car for problems with the ignition in several times, key gets stuck in ignition and hard to release.ignition locks and can't turn key to start engine.my car was under warranty and never was i told that there was a recall from the dealer.i was charged and the problem still exist after several services to my car.now my car is no longer under warranty and problem still exist.i think i may have purchased a lemon.

No summary listed for above vehicle.i

When attempting to start the vehicle, early morning startand vehicle failed to start.consumer made a second attempt to start and vehicle caught on fire, fire started in the steering wheel column.fire department was called ,and extinguishedfire before anymore damage was done tovehicle. Contacted dealer, anddealerwas not willing to do anything.

I own a 1998 pontiac grand am ,and there has been a recall on this vehicle. I want to take it in to get fixed -but pontiac/gmac will not provide a loaner car for me to use while they fix my car-they said it would take 5-6 hours to fix-their letter to me said it would only take an hour to an hour and a half.i cannot be without a vehicle for over 6 hours! i need to get to work!!i am stuck without any options, other than having to inconvenience myself and have to pay for a rental car.this is their mistake not mine and now i have to pay?!!!this is not good customer service , gmac should provide a loaner for these types of instances.

Ignition started smoking while trying to turn key in ignition.mr

My passlock system keeps on acting up. I can't say anything about the design of it, but i will say that the implementation is absolutely horrid and should be recalled.

Upon receiving a recall letter and taking the vehicle to dealer forrecall repairs consumer statedthat the vehicle was in very good condition until she took it to dealer. However, the dealer claimed the vehicle needed an ignition switch and chip. Also, consumer was told that the problem was the security system.

When attempting to turn off my vehicle the key would not go to the off position to release my key. All electrical devices (head lights, dash lights,etc...) would stay on. I disconnected the battery and then brought it to a dealer the next morning. They stated there was a failure in the shift interlock solenoiv and the ingnition lock cylinder also needed to be replaced. My car has 33,000 miles and has maintanance regularly(oil change,etc...). The dealer wants to charge $520 to fix a failed part. They also stated it could happen again. Any information on this would be wonderful. Thank you.

When stoppingvehicle consumer cannot getkey out ofignition.whenkey does not come out it is set onalternator.she cannot leave key there because it will run the alternator down.just had an alternator put on.she took vehicle to dealer, and paid for it to go ondianostic machin., yet, dealer could not find out why it was hard to removekey fromignition switch.

The key kept getting stuck in the ignition. Took it to a pontiac service dept. They said it needed lubing. A couple of days later the key startied to stick again. Took it back and the ordered a new floor shift.. A month later my wife stopped on top of a hill at our mail box and she couldn't get the car to go in park, the car cut off and began rolling down hill barely missing children playing in our driveway. Service dept. Picked up the car and they couldn't get it into reverse. They ordered a new gearshift lever.three times for similar defects shows there is a problem with our vehiclethat has my wife refusing to drive it.

After taking key out of ignition switch steering wheel would not lock in place.dealer has been contcted. Please provide further information.

This coolant system has fluid that does not need to be replaced for over 100,000 miles.however, the water pump may have to be replaced at only 50,000.pontiac called this normal.it seems a little deceptive to advertise a fluid that lasts so long when the mechnical parts may not.pontiac and gm would not offer repair assistance.the repair cost over $800.00.many local mechanics, some pontiac, said this was not normal for this part, but gm and pontiac still refused to offer any warranty assistance.

Vehicle when driving runs hot. Smells like it's on fire or something is burning. No indicator lights. Radiator fluid comes out when car is turned off.dealer contacted seven or eight times.also grinding noise intermittently, sounds like metal to metal, and dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Chronic coolant leak, caused by defective, plastic intake manifold gaskets.engine never showed it was hot. Based on my research this is a recurring problem with this engine. Gm should stand behind their products and fix this instead of continuing to use the same defective parts for over 5 years in a number of gm vehicles.i will never buy another gm product!

Engine head block cracked.yh

The engine and transmission operation very erratic, hesitation and poor acceleration almost resulting in near accidents.

While accelerating car has no power. Car is very sluggish. Took car to daeler, dealer could not correct the problem.

Vehicle continually stalls, unable to rectify.

While traveling 45mphvehicle stalled.has been taken to dealer several times

Noticed a cooling leak in engine.mechanic found intake manifold gasket leaking and said he had repaired over a dozen this year on general motors small v6 engines.apparently the plastic/rubber combination used for the gasket fails after a period of time.it is very complicated to replace which is why it was so expensive.dt

There are many more problems with this vehicle. The car is broken down down. Its too much of a danger to drive. It almost started on fire. I need for pontiac to come and get there piece of junk. Its not worth fixing. If you fix the problem, i can assure you that it will break down the following week.

A leaking fuel line is not acceptable from a 2yr old car which would cause a fire, also there is no reason (permiting that the vehicle is not abused) that an intake gasket should be replaced at less than 70,000 miles, esspecially if history on the 3.1l engine no matter what vehicle it is in has this problem for such a period of time and has not been corrected.

Front brake rotors warp causing uneven braking and can cause the vehicle to skid and loose control.

Breaks have failed 3 times in the last week alone. This problem has occurred several times however intermittently. We purchased this car 2 years ago and it has been in pontiac service numerous times. They have put on new brakes, pads etc. Adjusted the brakes and still the problem is unresolved. Something must be done immediately this car is unsafe and will cause an injury or death!

When starting the car abs lights keep coming on due tothis abs sensor malfunctioning.has been replaced twice.

I have had my rotors replaced three times now.even though my milage is rather high for the time owned, most of my driving is freeway driving.i have also had problems with the breaks failing, especially when the weather is damp or wet.i have also had the antilock breaks kick in when i was doing normal breaking.this caused me to almost have an accident, because it increased my stopping distance.i was going only approximately 5-25mph in each of the several incidents.when the breaks failed it feels like someopne put vaseline on the rotors.i step on the break pedal, and get no response.i usually have to pump the breaks in order for them to work.this particular car also had a bedspring, creaking, cracking noise that seems to appear when i go over bumps and when the body flexes.numerous people have asked me what the noise is, but my dealer can't seem to fix the problem.they did put some tape around something at one point that helped some, but the noise is very distracting and continues.the dealer actually told me that i shouldn't bring that car back to them for that problem.on my last trip to the dealer, they did seem to fix the problem temporarily, but when i was on the on ramp to the freeway, something "cracked" again, and the noises are heard daily now.i also had one of my fromt tires fail.the sidewall bubbled out.the manufacturer did nothing for me.i was more or less told that i would have to prove that there was a defect in the tire.i still had almost all of the origianl tread.the noises in the suspension/body are irritating, and the car sounds like it is going to fall apart on the road someday, but my biggest concern is the breaks.i am a very safe driver, but find the breaking system that is in my car very unreliable.i honestly feel that i would be better off without the abs, as i don't need them kicking in when i am doing normal slow stopping, such as pulling out of a driveway or just slow down. Very scary when i don't stop.

I have had lower control arm failures on both sides of my 1998 pontiac grand am. The rear bushing pulls apart causing a severe shimmy when braking at high speeds and clanking when going over bumps. It is either a design or manufacturing defect. The dealer has refused to pay costs.

I was informed that the problems related to the difficulty driving my grand am and the lound clunking noise and the intense "shimmy" was because my right lower control arm had snapped and my left lower control arm was cracked about to separate as well. I do know a little about cars and this doesn't seem to be a normal maintenance problem. This is costing me well over 600.00 to repair.

The vehicle's rpm was high, especially when starting.the dealer worked on it but did not solve the problem. Consumer states that the vehicle is unsafe. Service engine soon light coming on due to evap purge valve and solenoid failure.pcm failed.

Consumer states when taking foot off accelerator, vehicle starts to pulsate and when brakes are applied it takes approximately 3 to 4 feet to stop, while vehicle is bucking as if the abs are engaging, rpm needle goes crazy.

After driving the car and letting sit from 30 min to 4 hours(at various temps) and restarting going@10 mph, the cars rpms fluctuate briefly and then accelerate dramatically to 4000 rpm luckely, i put it into netural or my speed keeps increasing, when put into neutral, the rpm's increased to 4,000 and stays until the gas is pressed firmly then it will go back to idle. Pressing the brake doesn't stop this. A couple of times the rpms fluctuated then the car died instead of accelerating.

Throttle position sensor failed, causing vehicle to speed up unexpectedly which could result in an accident.

Car will not accelerate properly from a stop (usually when humid)

While drivingat a regular speedcar accelerated on its own, hittinganother vehicle.manufacturer was contacted, and stated they could resolve the problem.

Had problems with car since beginning. Accelerates on its own and lunges forward when stopping. Also the brakes failed, causing an accident. Rotors have warped on numerous occasions. Dealer contacted 10-15 times with no problem found. Car is a major safety hazard.

While driving the throttle remained stuck in the open position when the accelerator pedal was released.dealer has been contacted.

Pontiac grand am air bags arent safe at all mine busted out for no reason whatsoever it burned my arm and left a bruise and could've caused a wreck!

Consumer was driving through a school zone going less than 25 mph and cruise control kicked in.the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and went down an embankment.the vehicle hit a tree and it wasn't until the vehicle stopped that the air bags deployed.when the air bags deployed they blacked the passengers eyes.

While turning on the heater there is some strong smell that comes from the vents, it will fog up windshield.

The anti lock brake function prevents me from being able to brake my car on wet, snowy or slushy days, both my daughter and i have had to shift down and pull on the emergency brake to pull over, we live on a long steep hill. This resets theabs but only temporarily. Also, the auto locks malfunction and the front windows don't roll up and down, i am afraid we'll be trapped in an out of control car. Also the adjustment knob for the exterior rear view mirrors fell into the door so i can't adjust them without stopping as the windows don't open.

Both front power windows operate sporadically.they will roll down (not consistently) and fail to roll up.they can be stuck in the down position for days.this matter happened on a windy, snowy january day on the highway after paying a toll.i could barely drive while going the minimum, 45 mph, on the highway because of the cold air and snow blowing into my face.i have put up with not using any windows for about a year, but found out that i could not pass the west virginia safety inspection nor obtain a mandatory yearly safety sticker if my drivers side window will not roll down.it is against the state law tohave an inoperable drivers window, because i was told that if you are pulled over, the police officer needs to be able to speak with you through that window.in addition, it just makes sense that if you are trapped for whatever reason, a window may be your only escape.

Both driver & passenger window components...levers that raise & lower the windows have failed....the lever, ca;;ed the "window regulators" have basically ripped apart...on both doors.... This seems rather difficult to belive that such a thing could take place on a three year old car...i can find no prior reports..i assume owners just have them repaired, when it appears to me that there is an obvious "defect" in the manufacturing of these components. These componenets appear to be too weakly constrcuted to stand up to the stress involved in these electric windows.

This is applicable to both front power windows:power windows fail to operate randomly, up or down.gmc is relunctant to replace the units unless they see the defect occur.this could be a serious problem if the window were to fail to close in the rain or sandy situations while the car is being driven, damage to the interior or theft.being unable to open a window could block and escape path in an accident. Not to mention daily problems, like toll boths, drive thru's etc.

I have had a new transmission, calipers, gear shift mechanism,2 lighters, alternator,2 sets of window motors, 1 broken motor mount, strut torque wasnt bolted to the car when leased, a radial pull in 1 tire in which i had to pay to have replaced, tire scraping on fender right after leasing, 2 new headlamps, fuel cap, battery, and have had a short somewhere and dealer refused to locate.dealer and pontiac customer division refuse a buy back or trade in.sent package to general motors to make them aware of the situation and they refused the package all together.pontiac tells me their field rep went to talk to john moore and he refused a buy back so in turn, so did pontiac.i just would like a car that runs.this is my second pontiac that has been a lemon.i have all documentaion to prove it.how does a single mom working two jobs get help?its costed me a fortune in missed work.( dot number: tire size: p195/65r15 )

The regulators in both of the side windows are not functioning properly.

Power windows on both passenger and driver sides have failed.the motor still works, but if you roll window down you must manually keep window straight when rolling up.i have checked repair costs and it's about $500/window.my car was less than 3 years old when the problem occurred, so unless pontiac makes an improvement to the window system it will continue to happen.i have been told the part that is malfuntioning is called a regulator.i have taken my door panel off to look at it and it is just not made strong enough for the weight of the windows.

Due to inclement weather the windshield wiper blades have frozen, inhibiting the use of the windshield wipers. Dealer was contacted.

Front right lugs sheared off clean completely, causing the wheel & tire to drop and putting the auto to the pavement on it's front. Rail and rotor and spinning the auto somewhat. Pontiac refuses to cover under warranty saying they don't know what caused it, but it wasn't their fault.it took them 1 month to decide thanleaving the auto unrepaired at the dealership, and caused me to rent an automobile. Then finally paid myself to get the car back in use.loss of 1 mo. Use, had to pay the month's lease even though car was not driveable, and when they fixed it, they did it in 4 hours!
