On wenesday december 15 at approximentally 7:20 p.m. I went out to my boyfriend, scott fuller's car to roll up a window that was down. As i placed the key in the ignition, and turned 1 click, the air bag spontaneously deployed in my face. I have a cut in the middle of my throat, and i bit through my lip on the right side, i have bruising on the left side of my chest and i can barely hear in me left ear. His windows are electric that is why i needed to put the key in the ignition. He has a 1996 pontiac grand am gt, vin # 2nw12m6tc813666, car mileage:142,441and his insurance company is aa&j insurance company109 e. Main st. Gouverneur n.y. 13642 policy # 17772843-1.

A tech issue memo issued from pontiac/gm dated april, 1998 stated that owners may claim water leaking into the front passenger compartment of the car due to an inferior adhesive used during the manufacturing process on the top vent grille...was given to me by my mechanic, after i disvoered water leakage on my passenger area floor for 2 years (which i attributed to my negligence only) until this water leakage finally caused a short in my air bag module (located under the front passenger seat) which caused all of the other car electrical systems to short out.seal to the top vent grille was replaced, short repaired, airbag module was disconnected and the battery was replaced.the airbag module will be replaced at a later date when i can afford it.this totals $956.99 (including ny sales tax) which i requested pontiac reimburse me for.they steadfastedly refuse to reimburse me due to basically 4 things:(1) the warranty time expired on the car, (2) the age of the car, (3) the fact that i didn't bring it directly to pontiac to fix it (4) the fact that it wasn't a recall...my arguement is:(1) the warranty expiring shouldn't absolve gm/pontiac of responsibility of the defect, (2) the normal wear and tear on this car (in spite of it's age) wouldn't have produced this water damage if the top vent grille was properly sealed in the manufacturing process by pontiac in the first place (3) i didn't know that pontiac caused this problem until after the damage was done and my mechanic told me about the tech issue memo (i have a copy) and (4) why wasn't this a recall?i sent a letter to pontiac's customer assistance center in detroit, mi on or about june 27, 2005 with all relevant documentation backing up my claim (yours for the asking), who called me back today, refusing to reimburse me on this claim. I know that negligence by pontiac caused some major damage to my car of which i believe i should be reimbursed for.

My daughter was driving our 1996 pontiac grand am at approximately 30mph when the airbag suddenly deployed.

In june 2000 horn started sounding off at all hours i have to tap the horn several times to make it stop. I took the grandam to a pontiac dealership courtesy of lex. The service dept. Iformed me that my airbag was swelling and could deploy at anytime. They were going to charge me $700.00 to replace the system. I refused. I feel that this is a factory defect.

06/05 water under the dash made me think the windshield was leaking-an auto glass dealer determined it was not leaking and agreed to take out the carpet-he discovered the firewall was not sealed properly from the factory- i paid him to seal it & dry & replace the carpet...09/07 i had problems with the all the alarm lights on the dash coming on---after turning off &restarting the car--the only light left on was the air bag light----06/17/08 i received an 'owner manual supplement' to add to my owners manual telling me the "air bag controller" may or may not deploy in a crash or even without warning....this is a design defect ...there are 1000's of the these time bombs going down the same highways we are traveling-gm needs to issue a recall & replace these---gm is not able to notify every owner of this problem after 12 years-people are driving these vehicles 60 and 70 miles an hour down the highways & their air bag may deploy without warning--the potential for horrific accidents even deaths of innocent people are inevitable-please force gm to take recall not print inserts for the owners manuals.

My airbag deployed under normal driving conditions (no impact/crash, no damage, etc.)after doing some research, i learned that it could be due to the fact that my car was wet (not flooded.)i suffered brush burns up my forearms.i received a letter from pontiac stating that they are aware of this problem, however, there is no recall and it is up to the owner to fix it (at the owner's expense.)if pontiac is aware of the problem, and sent out millions of letters, they should issue a recall.at the very least, they should pay for the damages/repairs.

There is water on all four floors of my car (front driver and passenger/back seat two both passenger sides).the rear left floor has particularly heavy water saturation.my air bag light has also stayed on for the last two weeks.yesterday, i received a letter from gm indicating that the air bag controller on the 1996 pontiac grand am is mounted above the floor pan beneath the front passenger seat, and that if the vehicle is exposed to significant water entering the interior and soaking the carpet, the air bag controller can be soaked and damaged.the damaged controller can make the air bags deflate, even without impact or crash.conversely, the air bags may not deploy at all because of the controller damage.this letter was sent by gm as an owner manual supplement and they will not be responsible for what is clearly a problem.at this point, no recall has been issued.because i am unemployed, i have no money to repair the car, and am scared to drive it.hence, i now have no transportation as well as no money or job.gm should be responsible for this.if they are aware enough of a problem as to notify owners of this car, they should be paying for repairs to a car that is saturated with water.

Violent deployment of air bag during collision, resulting in injuries to head, neck and face.

I have a 1996 ponitac grand am that has water in the passenger compartment. Gm sent a letter stating that the air bag module could deploy the air bags with warning while driving without a crash or when thekey is turn on. This has many complaints but no one is doing anything.as a auto tech for my own safety as well of others there should be a recall and of the effective years or 96-98 grand ams. They said injuries have been reported already.

Air bags driver and passenger deployed while driving car for no reason no auto crash.

While driving home from the park, driver side air bag went off, burst of powder and horn blowing, scraped right hand. Was able to pull to side of road and undo fuse to horn. Found out by going online many others have had this happen is there any recourse to this that i can follow up on? note: it seems gmc has known about this and really should have recalled these vehicles or taken them off the road, serious injury or death could have happened if these blow without cause.

I had just turned my car on and put it in reverse to back out of a parking spot. I only moved about two inches backwards, not even going over 5 mph, when the air bag randomly deployed without warning. It hit me on the left side of my head/neck, chest, and arm resulting in cuts, burns, and bruises in those areas. My left ear started ringing and i momentarily lost hearing on that side. I did not hit anything with my vehicle nor did something hit me. My car did not even leave the parking spot before this incident occurred. After i gained composure and realized what had just happened, i made my way out of the car and a man who witnessed everything walked me to the fire department near by. My cuts were tended to and i was transported to the hospital by ambulance for further treatment and examining.

On october 18, 2005 while driving at 30 mph in fair weather, the driver's side airbag unexpectedly deployed, though no contact was made with any other vehicle or stationary object. The airbag deployment caused extreme irritation via friction burn to right forearm of driver, temporary hearing distress to driver and passenger and near loss of control of vehicle due to shock of this deployment.investigation of similar incidents shows that likely cause is short in airbag control module under passenger seat due to presence of water on the floor of the vehicle. Water on floor has been a perennial problem in my vehicle and many attempts to ascertain the cause (attribute to leaky molding, poor fitting window trim, etc.), were unsuccessful. Perusal of similar complaints on this website show a clear pattern of similar events attributable to a manufacturer's defect (per tech issue memo issued by gm in 1998) related to inferior adhesive used during assembly of top vent grille. Excessive rain typically results in water on floor of passenger compartment and has caused this same unexpected deployment of both driver and passenger side airbags in several complaints.likelihood of gm accepting responsibility for this defect and repairing the problem is apparently slim (per other complainants reports) due to age of vehicle and the fact that it has taken years to present itself, meaning no recall was issued by pontiac. I would recommend all owners of this vehicle who experience this water problem report it their gm dealership prior to experiencing the airbag deployment, as it could have had much more serious consequences if traveling at higher speeds in less than ideal conditions!!!

While driving 45 mph on flat roadpassenger's airbag deployed. Consumer pulled overand noticed smoke coming from underhood. Raised hood, and saw smoke fromdriver's side.at that moment, driver's airbag deployed. Engine was shut off. Pontiac took no responsibility for this.

I was going to work and started my car.the airbag on the drivers side exploded, knocking me back into the seat, knocking off my glasses and name tag, loosened 2 teeth, gave me abrasions to face, filled the car with smoke and knocked me unconscious for a few moments.i was not in gear at the time and was not traveling down the highway (which is a good thing because i could have been in a terrible accident), i was just sitting in my driveway.i have contacted my dealer and was told there was nothing to be done about this, no recalls, nothing.it is too expensive for me to replace and cannot drive my car anymore.i want the airbag replaced at no cost to me because i believe it is manufactures defect.other than a few problems with the lights and air conditioning not working i have loved this car and would still be driving it if i could get the airbag replaced free.can anyone out there help?i did receive a notice that there are problems with the airbag system but no recalls.help!!!

I was driving on the expressway at 70 mph and without warning, my driverside airbag deployed. I was in shock and had temporary hearing loss. Both of my lips were bloodied, i was burned on my neck and i still have ocassional ringing in my ears.i don't know how, but when my line of vision was clear, i saw i had maintained the position in my lane and continued traveling. Then, a few minutes later, my passenger- side airbag deployed without warning. Thankfully, my girlfriend was sleeping in the backseat. Again i had temporary hearing loss, but kept driving until i got to my home. I contacted general motors dealership, but they did not feel they could help since they had not heard of this problem. There were a series of phone calls between general motors, my dad and me. Out of the blue in one conversation, general motors asked if i had water on my floorboard and when i said that i did, they said the airbags probably deployed because of this and it was my fault for not getting that fixed. When my dad asked what that had to do with the airbags and if they were aware that this was a problem, they said it was a routine question. Subsequently, a general motors dealership has concluded that water under the passenger seat cause the computer module to corrode. They are willing to replace the airbags and the computer, but not fix they water problem that they indicated may have caused this. We have discussed this problem with independent mechanics and have since received technical bulletins stating that the water problem is inherent to this vehicle.

I was driving in my subdivision about three weeks ago, when suddenly the driver's side airbag in my 1996 pontiac grand am went off.i immediately pulled over, turned on the emergency lights, and my fiance and i got out of the car.about thirty seconds later, the passenger side air bag goes off.i was very fortunate that this did not occur on a main road or on the freeway because someone could have been seriously hurt.my fiance's mother and i have been in contact with general motors for about two weeks now.they have not been very helpful with my situation, and as of right now, i will probably have to pay for the repairs out of pocket, even though there was no accident, and i am not to blame for this.i have read similar cases on the internet, and this may be due to a corroded wire in the air bag system.gm should really consider calling a recall on these airbag systems before their customers get seriously hurt or worse as a result of gm's negligence.

My driver side and passenger side airbags deployed while i was driving eastbound on rt. 251 without cause. Fortunately, i was by myself and was able to pull off onto the side of the road. Luckily, i sustained minor abrasions on the left side of my face. My insurance company would not pay for repairs, due to electrical short.

While traveling at highway speed of 55 mph passenger's side air bag deployed for unknown reason.dealer /manufacturer were notified, and waiting on manufacturer's response.feel free to provide us with any further details on this matter.

My husbandis driving and i am in the passenger seat driving down a dirt road at 30mph. We know you cant go fast on dirt roads so we are being precautious.all of the sudden the passenger sideairbag deploys striking me in the face. The vehicle comes to a stop and we rush to the emergency room via a friend. I was injured. My neck was severely swelled and bruised as well as not being able to hear because of damage to the ear drum. The shock of the whole thing had my husband and i both shaken up. Who knows what would have happened if this was the driver airbag instead of the passenger side. We are lucky but not happy.my husband and i feel very unsafe driving this vehicle.

I was drivingon a paved road when my drivers side airbag deployed.the road was smooth and i didn't hit anything.a friend cut the air bag out and we took it to dealer were i purchased car. They said to take it to a pontiac dealer. I ask if the other airbag would go off they said maybe. While backing into driveway the passenger side went off.took it to brown pontiac and they ran a check to get codes ,they found no codes. Called pontiac with info. And i have a file #06730530. A represtitive is suppose to call back its been 4 days, nothing .i was just glad there wasn't an accident. Can't get car fixed untill inspector from gm comes out in 4 weeks to 2 months. Can you help?

Whileconsumer was parking the vehicle passenger's side air bag deployed. Consumer claimed that the vehicle never collided with anything nor ran over anything.the next day consumer tookvehicle todealer for the first air bag deployment whendriver's side air bag deployed.the consumer suffered a split lip and abrasions on the arms.

While driving 70 mph driver side air bag deployed inadvertently.no injuries reported.

Engine shuts down/all power is gone/ there are no brakes/ no steering andno lights. Consumerindicates there is no power at all, andfeels this is very dangerous, took to dealer, and they couldn't remedy the problem. It is anintermittent problem.

The car has been given a lot of electrical problems and now one of the pulleys that holds the engine's belt broke, also my horn does not work properly.

I started my car in a parking lot and was driving approx 10mph when the car died almost immediately, after restart, it did it again. Then, it wouldn't even turn over. I had it towed to a mechanic who told me that it was probably a bad fuel pump. Turns out it was the pontiac anti-theft device that was keeping it from starting. When your key starts getting worn and rounded off, (as most keys do after some use!) the theft system locks your car up. There is no fix for this problem other than replacing the ecu, ignition system, key tumbler, or a combination of the same, and reprogramming it, which costs upwards of 1000.00this anti theft system is preventing me from using my lawfully owned car! the only way to fix it is to have a dealership replace defective pontiac parts. An anti theft system should be a preventative measure to keep crooks from boosting your car, not something that will cost the owner more money later when their key wears down!worse yet, if the car is disabled on a highway and the steering wheel locks up, you risk killing yourself or others on the road! this has got to be a safety violation and a red flag for a recall.i'm going to probably sell this rat-trap for scrap/crush value to a junk yard and buy another car, so although this complaint won't benefit me, hopefully my comment will help someone else who is having problems with their pos pontiac.

Car would not start. Steering locked and transmission stuck in park.key would not turn. Towed car home. Removed the ignition switch and found the ignition lock had melted. The obvious fire hazard prompted a recall search for the make and model finding an ignition recall has been issued. I contacted pontiac customer service. The representative asked me if my vin was covered. I have confirmed the vin is on the recall list although the rep. Failed to acknowledge this. The seriousness of the recall, potential fire hazard and validity of my complaint was ignored and [xxx] (pontiac rep.) would not assist me further. I am stuck now with trying to resolve getting my car repaired in a timely manner. Please advise.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Electrical system failed causing the headlights and dash lights to go out.

I am currently financing a car from rpm wholesale in flint, i got this car march 29, 2005. I have had the car fixed more than 6 times. The car has not been working for 2 weeks. The car was over heating, and then it would not start up. I took it back to rpm and they said they fixed it. Again this week i took it back, and they are saying its a electrical nightmare, and make an appointment to bring it back, but i can drive it until then.

The headlights went dim while driving, the vehicle cut off /would not restart, resulting in complete loss of power. The key was stuck in the ignition and would not go into park. Consumer was trapped in vehicle for 20 minutes because doors and windows would not open. Dealer was not contacted yet.

The alternatorwa snot getting enough of a charge. Had to be recharged every week. The panel lights would blink on/off. The vehicle then shut down. Had taken to dealer & the alternator was replaced, but the problem still exists.

The contact owns a 1996 pontiac grand am. The contact stated that the passenger side and the driver side had two inches of rain in the vehicle but was unable to identify where it was coming from. The theft system activated and the vehicle responded as if it were stolen which made it impossible to start the vehicle. The contact also had a lot of major components repaired on the vehicle and the failure continued to occur. The dealer advised the contact that there was nothing they could do to assist with the failure. The failure mileage was currently 141,000. The failure mileage was 120,000.

Electrical system failed while driving home from work in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain, driving down a hill. Without warning the lights flickered and dimmed, headlights went out, interior lights went out, lost power, unable to use brakes or power steer car. Was able to coast on a side road and apply emergency brake. After stopping, unable to release key from car or open door, able to escape through roll down window.

Gm pass lock system on a 1996 pontiac grand am wont allow car to start stranding me at work.

Transmission failure; vehicle experiences shifting problems, resulting in loss of control. Also, electrical system failure.

Anti-theft system keeps activating. Had key switch and instrument cluster replaced. Still happening!!!!!

The ignition would not turn over, the interior and exterior lighting levels fluctuated, the dashboard light flickered on/off, and the battery died on several occasions.the consumer requested reimbursement for the parts that have been replaced for a problem that hasn't been fixed.scc *nlm

Car electrical system shut down while driving, daylights, all dash gauges etc. This is an intermittent trouble. My trouble appears mainly when headlights are on with the heater blowing on defogger. It comes and goes every so often especially while driving at 5:00 a.m. When its cold and headlights are on and defogger is needed. Alternator was recently replaced but the car is still experiencing a christine haunted car syndrome with the electrical and its getting dangerous. This has been going on since i have owned the car, and since it is intermittent, when it happens the car's trouble cant be located.

Every time it rains i get water on the floor of my car, this has been an ongoingi have had to replace the instrument cluster because it went out on me wile driving because the wires behind on the firewall are wet.

The vehicle has experienced multiple electrical system failures, the battery failed and was replaced twice, the dash lights flicker, the interior and exterior light fluctuate, the ignition clicks and the vehicle cannot be started.nlm

I was driving down hiway the car died i turned it to the right to get off the hiway and the airbag on drivers side exploded, i had the car towed and was told the pass key system or theft system went bad in ignition switch and no explanation why air bag went off? or how to fix any of it, this is now july and i am still having problems.

The contact owns a 1996 pontiac grand am.the contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to start due to the theft system.once the vehicle was started, it stalled at 40 mph due to the theft system.the vehicle was taken to a mechanic, who stated that the ignition cylinder may have caused the failure.according to the owner's manual, the contact must wait ten minutes before restarting the vehicle after the failure occurs.she feels that this is a safety issue because the vehicle could stop in the middle of the highway.the failure mileage was 181,271 and current mileage was 181,600.

Electrical problems, causing daytime running lights to fail, also warning lights on dash activating. *dsh

One hour after parking vehicle, a fire ignited in the trunk area. Trunk light would not go off, all dash lights were illuminated.

Engine stalled which took the power awayfrom windows anddoor locks. The owner was trapped in vehicle for an hour. Dealer says it was an internal short within the battery.

Consumer called complaining about a recall performed on ignition wiring harness. Stated that after the recall was done the battery drained into the vehicle because ofrecallrepairs done. Dealer was contacted, and stated that the only thing that was wrong was that the battery drained, and there was nothing they could do.

Check engine light would come one for a day and go off did this 3 times before total failure of alternater & battery/front end/steering/brakes(abs) abd shocks. Car will pull hard to the left while braking athighway speeds. Have to fight steering wheel to keep car in lane. Had brakes checked and could not find anything. ( front brakes were very hot) hit small bump or pothole or taking turn or going down the street/highway and car will wander left and rigth while you are holding the wheel. Sometimes it is bad enough to have to take corrective action to keep going straight. Nhtsa recall #96v249000 my car does not fall in the manfactured date of july 96 can i still have checked no charge? i was taking wax of my car with keys in the ignition car off, the power door looks locked car. Nhtsa recall 02 v 070 000/manufacturer's recall 02008 concerning ignition switch:after recall repairs were done, the vehicle stalled on three separate occasions and would not restart.the engine check light, oil light, battery light and abs light would come on intermittently while driving.dealer notified.consumer states that before the recall kit was installed the car hasn't been running properly.one incident the consumer was driving on the highway and the vehicle stalled and a semi-truck was following.the consumer was told that it was a bad sensor which still didn't solve the problem.then on another occasion was told that it wasn't the sensor but a bad fuel pump. The lights are still on 75 percent of the time.*scc

Since purchase had to replace 3 alternators/2 ignition switches/ 2 stop-hazard switches/abs switch, and 2 batteries.windshield is leaking during heavy rains.the consumer indicates that the vehicle has questionable design which causing most of the problems.

Water failed due to leaking.

Alternator failed due to the charging system.

Alternator and abs problems: alternator has been replaced four times in the last seven months, and will need replacing again.when applying the brakes, under normal braking conditions, pedal goes to the floorbroad and the vehicle travels additional distances before stopping. Dealer is not able to determine what is causing this problem. Please provide any further information.

Coolant leaking into crankcase, engine needs replaced. Also i have replaced 3 alternators since i owned this vehicle.the first one at 40000 miles. This car by my book is crap.dt

My extended waranty put a used engine in after the original blew up. The engine they sent had to be sent back because it was also no good . It had 18,000 on it when it was sent to replace. Now they are sending another engine . It is now a month later then when i took it to the shop and it is still not fixed. I think someone owes me something.

The paint peeling on the mirrors and the front suspension squak has been repaired once by the manufacuter and they refuse to fix the repairs now. The cold start rattle has never been fixed, they have not been able to find the problem.

The wiring must be shot because any thing that is electric is always going out.dt

Constant problems mostly electrical, but from windows and locks to major things like alternators and ignition switches multiple times. Contacted pontiac over a year and never heard even a reply. Any recalls or factory fix info would be appreciated.

Service advisor comments lead me to suspect that shortness of alternator wiring harness caused electrical shorts which caused three alternator failures and one instrument cluster failure.intial alternator failure resulted in sudden electrical system shutdown on i-880 at the santa cruz mountains summit, a near safety mishap.the vehicle had to be towed to dealer.on the other two alternator failures, warning lights gave us enough notice to drive the vehicle to the dealer for repairs.

I believe this car to be a lemon, most of the complaints described by other owners this year model exist with this vehicle.how can i get help, now something is smoking under the hood, i believe it to be electrical but i don't have the cash to take to a mechanic. Help. No safety defect.

The alternatorwa snot getting enough of a charge. Had to be recharged every week. The panel lights would blink on/off. The vehicle then shut down. Had taken to dealer & the alternator was replaced, but the problem still exists.

Transmission leaks fluid due to a failed trans-axle seal.

Consumer had the alternator replaced on his vehicle three times. The owner has no extended warraity, so the dealer won't replace the alternator.

Light that reflexes the failure of alternator will not come on until all 3 diod has failed. This causes engine to quit when two of the 3 diods hav failed.dealer contacted.

The engine stalled twice in driving. Alternator has been replaced twice in the last year. Windows get stuck in the middle and don't go up and down. Ts

In this vehicle, by 80,000 miles, all 4 power window motors had sequentially overheated and failed with ordinary use.they have all had to undergo replacement.in addition, the alternator has twice become clogged with debris (leaves, etc). Through ordinary use, overheated and failed.both the original alternator and a manufacturer-branded replacement have failed in this fashion, and have required replacement.

Consumer was sitting still waiting to make a turn &vehcile stalled.tow truck driver said the alternator wasn't charging the battery. Conusmer will contact the dealer.

We have had coolant loss three times with no visible leakage. We were informed that the car was "sucking the coolant in" rather than leaking out. We have had to have the intake manifold gasket replaced 3 times. The 1st time, the dealer replaced intake manifold gasket & oil pump drive ring and valve cover gasket leaking. The 2nd time, the dealer simple resealed the intake gasket but did not replace. The 3rd time, the dealer replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets and rechecked for leaks. All of these repairs were covered under either the original warranty or the extended warranty (good thru 72,000 mi). We now have almost 70,000 mi on this car and the engine is shot! the main throttle bearing gaulded and the extended warranty company is denying our claim (even though we have 2,000 mi left on extended warranty) because they say the oil is "contaminated". I have maintained regular oil changes and am due for an oil change in approx 200 mi. The dealership did not inform me that i should have had the oil changed after any of the coolant leak repairs. Also, we had to have the alternator replaced when then car was just 2 yrs old. Plus we had to have the r&r shaft seal & bearing kit replaced 3 times due to squeaking noise coming from steering column. Also had to have shifter assemply replaced because the key was sticking in the ignition.

Alternator replace two times within a year and a half. Brakes all ways going bad abslight stays on all of the time i have to payfrom 300 to 700all of the time to get this car fix now koons want a 1000 to fix the ebtcm i have so many problem with this car i am still paying a car note i no that this car has a defectit staysin the shop.

Nhtsa# 02 v 07 000/ignition : while vehicle was parked, horn started going off, and then noticed vehicle on fire under the hood. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. An investigator determined the cause of fire was arson.*jg

Horn failed.

The car has been given a lot of electrical problems and now one of the pulleys that holds the engine's belt broke, also my horn does not work properly.

Right side horn area pressed and horn stayed on for approximately 3 minutes before it finnaly shut off.

Beginning march 1999 my horn has failed to work.they fixed the problem then - said the contacts were loose. After about a year the horn stopped working again.i took it back to the dealer in june 2000 and they informed me that the contacts were loose and it needs a horn pad.in order to fix the horn it would cost $600 due to the airbag.once they put the horn back together it worked for a little while.it has since stopped working again.

Hornis hard to press, consumer has to use two hands to press onhorn. Contacted dealer.

Automatic transmission surges at 60 mph.thought that transmission failed at first, but then noticed car was fine at low speeds.shut off car and restarted, then transmission was fine.(noticed similar posting on your web site - odi id 802947)for the defect related to the steering column, key will not come out of ignition on occasion when car is turned off.to fix this, turn car back on, then put transmission into drive and then firmly into park.this, and turning wheel, will usually fix the problem.

Ignition key cannot be moved from the ignition when the vehicle is turned off. It takes about 10 minutes up to one hour before the key can be removed. The dealer has tried to correct this problem 3 times. Vehicle is at dealership for the 4th time for this problem.

Key gets stuck in switch and can't turn vehicle off nor take key out of ignition. Took vehicle to dealer and had repairs, but problem still exists.

This is the third replacement of the ignition lock cylinder within two years 1998-2000.it seems to need replaced every 9-12 months.i feel this is an obvious problem and should be corrected.the seat anchor has been reported each time i take the car to the dealership.the last time i was told to recline the seat to prevent the problem.i do not feel this is an acceptable answer to the problem.

Key will not come out of ignition after putting into park.sticks at various times and for various lengths of time.the lights stay on which has drained the battery twice.have had three different local dealers check.they did things like grease it, make new keys and scratch their head.none of these have solved my problem.i purchased the car as a "program car" with 14967 miles on it.the problem started shortly after purchase in 1996.after5 years of thinking i was alone with this annoying problem, i recently found six local owners with the same problem and now i see about ten other complaints on this web site.i did have the most recent recall done but the dealer said it did not have anything to do with this problem but didn't have any answers on how to fix it.i have sent e-mails to pontiac with no reply.i realize this may not fall into safety issues but it is a wide problem that needs looked into.with the ignition left in the on position, it may be a fire hazzard, not to mention hard on batteries.i am tot he point of seeking legal assistance to get this problem solved.this is the largest, most annoying problem i have had, other than this, i have liked the car.please, please help me fix this!

Nhtsa recall 02-v-070-000: on certain passenger vehicles. If the engine failed to start and the driver held the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flew through the ignition switch, and sometimes produced enough heat to melt internal switch parts. This recall failed and the vehicle caught on fire. Consumer had backed up approx. Five feet in an parking lot when the engine died and smoke emitted from the steering column. At first the consumer couldn't get the keys out and the vehiclewas in "park".after while the consumer was able to remove the keys the smoke stopped. I believe this car to be a lemon, most of the complaints described by other owners this year model exist with this vehicle.how can i get help, now something is smoking under the hood, i believe it to be electrical but i don't have the cash to take to a mechanic. Help. No safety defect.

Car has had major problems since purchase dealer is no longer willing to fix. No safety defect listed.

While driving vehicle in reverse smoke started coming out through dashboard, where according to consumer ,they found three wires that were rubbing together. Wires are currentlykept apart, andconsumer could start vehicle without smoke coming from dashboard.

Vehicle has had continued problems with fuses shorting out causing loss of hazard, turn and brake lights.

The steering wheel column made grinding noises when my 1996 grand am se was driven.the noises even persisted after the grand am was returned to the original dealership in washington, d.c. Where the car was purchased from for service/repair in december 1999.the service manager informed me the noises from the steering wheel column could not be fixed and since the car was "older"- only 3 years old, any noises in the steering wheel column should be expected and are normal for a 3 year old car.the service manager told me he would look at the steering wheel column as well as the electrical componenets under the dashboard to investigate the problem.the service manager informed me that he did the best he could do to find and repair the noises in the steering wheel column.approximately three months later, and continued to hear grinding noises from the steering wheel column, on march 31, 2000, after dropping my infant to the daycare center, i attempted to start the car and it would not start.the steering wheel column in addition to the turn signal chamber on the steering wheel column began to smoke.flames began to appear from the steering wheel column and a steady flow of smoke.the electrical fire increased in size and was finally brought under control by two fire engine companies.my 1996 pontiac grand am was towed, assessed for damages and finally deemed unsalvageable- a total loss.my 1996 pontiac grand am se was only three years old.this incident should not have occurred.( dot number: )

At any speed lights on control panel would illuminate, andcar would suddenly die out. Incident occurred four times. Dealer contacted and attempted to remedy problem by installing new computer. Provide further information.

My most recent problem included transmission failure, and according to the mechanic this had been happening for a very long time.the fourth gear of the transmission and the clutch were burned out.i've also had to replace a water pump on the vehicle.immediately after purchase, i noticed anti-freeze leaking from the vehicle and the vehicle would just die while driving along.i attempted to get the dealer to repair the vehicle and did get his verbal agreement however, he lied and wouldn't follow through.i suppose because he knew he'd sold me a lemon and was more than eager to state his case, thathad no lemon law.there are various electrical problems especially with the instrument panel and i suppose it may be something electrical that causes myvehicle to die while driving along.there is no warning, the vehicle just goes dead.during stops it seems that at times the rear end just has a mind of its own; almost as if it wants to keep going while the front end has stopped - it's sort of like a skipping effect.other electrical problems include the passenger door lock not operating with the power door lock, the radio display is lit at times and sometimes it's not, since i've had the transmission repaired the check engine light and ets lights which have been on since i purchased the vehicle, are no longer lit.during the water pump failure the dealerships remedy for it was to disconnect the electrical wiring which prompted me that something was wrong with this system.the electrical problems are numerous.my car is a lemon!

Underdash wiring harness failure caused vehicle fire. Mjs

Consumer was inside ofvehicle . Started vehicle up, and noticed smoke coming underneath the dashboard.fire department was called.

The temperature gauge and the air conditioner don't work and the vehicle is overheating, causing the consumer to have problems seeing out the window.dealer has worked on the vehicle four times, and still can't determine the problem. Also, water pump had to be replaced.

Temperature gauge erratic.

Ihave twopontiac grand am1995, 1996both cars has the same problem the intake and head gasketneeds replace they sent me a paper in the mail and said there was a recall on my carsbut never heard any thing about it my car it about to stop running and my 1995 won't run with out over heatingif someone could get me any info please do and pass it my way i could really use the help.

Car runs hot.when starting up windows would fog, could smell antifreeze. Tookvehicle to dealer, and they replaced heater core, they said it had a pin hole in it. Consumer said carwasstill running hot, consumer could hear a flapping noise, like a helicopter under the hood. The poping front right suspension was due to sway bar link failure which made stablizer bar loose. Horn malfunctions due to dirty contacts.window does not go up or down properly due to window motor failure.the noise in engine area when cold was due to alternator failure.water pump was leaking.temperature guage was inaccurate.the noise from front and rear brakes was caused by worn brake pads.driver side mirror control fell into the door panel.

Sensor failed and temperature gauge did not indicate that the engine was overheating.the engine seized up and was sold for salvage value or $1,500.there is documented oil changes every three thousand miles with simultaneous coolant checks.

Water failed due to leaking.

Alternator failed due to the charging system.

I'm having problems with my cooling system.i'm always losing coolant .sometimes it's visble and leaks to the ground.other times i can't find where the coolant is leaking too.i always have to check my coolant level and add coolant most of the time.i hear a loud noise in my dashboard while driving sometimes.it sounds like something is loose.

In the past 4 months, i have replaced my heater core, because it is plastic, and then the radiator, now the head gasket. Problems of this nature first surfaced with heater core failure, which is made of plastic and then proceeds through the cooling to system, to my current problem, head gasket replacement.the water pump and transmission have both been replaced, while under the new car warranty. I took my car to hardin pontiac in anaheim, ca at 3 pm on march 4th.they have now had my car 2 days and they want to charge me another $80 to further diagnose my coolant leak.i have opened a file w/pontiac, ref # 1-78-69-0865. Pontiac determined that, as i am the second owner, the age of the car (1996) and number of miles (82,622) they have no responsibility.i explained to her, that while i am the 2nd owner, i purchased the car while it was still under their 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.and while under warranty, my transmission & water pump had been replaced.the cooling system problems began while under the new car warranty.also gm's n' car series has numerous problems with their cooling systems, i am being penalized, primarily, because i am the second owner, rather than the original owner. My car has been maintained and serviced as specified in their owner??s manual. While speaking w/pontiac, i was told there is an open recall on the ignition system, apparently it is know to overheat and melt, rendering the car undrivable.it appears gm's overheating issues are not limited to their cooling system and cheap plastic parts.i requested that the service rep, mr. Romero, explain why he felt they needed to further diagnose my coolant leak, is the head gasket leaking, or not?mr. Romero, did indeed diagnose what he termed an "external coolant leak' in other words a leak at the head gasket.at this point, i have instructed ernie to handle the recall problem with the ignition only. Pontiac has minimized the problem and conveyed that it does not warrant immediate attention.

I have ran across a few peopl that have had their water pumps fail on their cars like mine has. Is this a common problem and is it a recallable issue right now.

My extended waranty put a used engine in after the original blew up. The engine they sent had to be sent back because it was also no good . It had 18,000 on it when it was sent to replace. Now they are sending another engine . It is now a month later then when i took it to the shop and it is still not fixed. I think someone owes me something.

While driving coolant signal came on. Then, took vehicle to a service shop and they said that water pump was not working and was replaced.

Hose failed.

While driving and turningto the left there was no steering. Also, brakefailed, andvehicle intermittently stalled.

Had to have the engine replaced after only 69,000 miles due to a piston gone bad! gm would give no assistance, even though i have had the car worked on at 15 different times, so i had to pay almost $4,000! dealership, where taken, was no help either, they said that it was due to having the oil changed at "jiffylube" or "q-lube" or "wal-mart".they said those places use "refined oil" and not new oil like the dealership does.this sounds like an excuse and not a contributing factor to me!like i mentioned, since buying the car i have taken it to the "shop" on 15 different occasions for warranty & non-warranty work. Indiana does not have a lemon law so i am not sure what else to do to get some help in this matter! the dealership even mentioned they have had similar problems with these engines! looking for some help!i now have to keep the car for atleast 3 more years to get my money back from the new engine!

The check oil light appeared on the dashboard intermittently. Vehicle stalled and shut down. Dealer was aware of the problem.the driver requested thedealership mechanic to look atvehicle because it was on recall a year ago.

The car has been given a lot of electrical problems and now one of the pulleys that holds the engine's belt broke, also my horn does not work properly.

I own a 1996 pontiac grand am,i noticed sb #020601014 regarding the manifold intake gasket - ihad to replace two on my grand am. I was told it is typical every 50,000 miles, yet i previously owned a grand am and know plenty of people who do and have not experienced this problem.what makes matters worse is that it is a $900.00 job, and i had to do it twice! i am listing the most recent date - the second occurrence.

Consumer states he experienced head gasket failure and the radiator fluid mixed with the engine oil which also caused the engine to be ruined, consumer was advised by two independent mechanics that the engine needs to be replaced, consumer was also advised by both mechanics that this is most likely a manufacturer defect.

Vehicle kept stalling out intermittently, causing loss of power .about 15 minutes later, vehicle would restart. Eventually, vehicle stalled out for dealer , which was then hooked up to a tackometer 2 machine, andcodes indicted defectwas due to ignition module sensor and crankshaft sensor.

Engine failure --piston or rod and only 30k miles on used engine

A rod failed in the engine causing damage to crankshaft.general motors acknowledges the fact that the 2.4 liter engine has experienced many failures.but, general motors advised that the failures have taken place on the upper portion of the engine.general motors refuses to assist me with repairing the engine.the estimated cost of repairing the engine is $3,600.00.i want general motors to repair the engine because the company acknowledges the fact that the engine has a record for failures.i requested to have a general motors area mangager to call me two weeks ago.i was told by a customer service representative that my request would be forwarded on, but the representative went on to say that i should not expect the manager to call me.

Engine head gasket failed, causing anti-freeze coolant to leak onto engine . Cause is unknown. Gasket leaked anti-freeze into the engine causing clickingnoise and the engine has to be replaced.there was no warning to this problemand due to the faulty gasket the engine was ruined.

Coolant detected in oil, svc advisor said that 3 vehicles w/same engine have same problem--blown head gasket.-caught before total engine failure.

I have a 1996 pontiac grand am with a quad 4 engine in it. The engine has 100,050 miles on it, i took very good care of it, oil changes on time did all of the maintenance on it required in the book, etc, etc. I started the car the other day and the whole thing jerked forward, made a loud bang then would not do any thing but turn over really fast. I had it towed in to my mechanic and found out that my engine needs to be replaced because the exhaust valves smashed into the pistons and did a lot of damage. From what i was told by three different mechanics is that the quad 4 engine made by gm is the worst engine ever designed and should not have been put out on the market. I was also told that on this type of car over 100,000 miles was lucky and that kind of miles on this engine is considered high mileage. I was told one of two things could have caused this and that both problems are common in this car. The first cause could have been the hydraulic fluid that causes the manifold gasket to open when the car is shut off sludged up and this caused the timing to mis align at start up and caused the valves and pistons to smash together. The second common cause for this in this type of engine is the pin in the cam shaft snapped off at start up and caused the timing to jump and crash the pistons and valves together. Both problems are known by gm, yet the consumer is not alerted so they can go in and get the cam pin checked or have the fluid checked for sludging.

Vehicle leaking coolant from lower intake manifold gasket. Leak was both interior and exterior.

Owner states that steering arm bolts were faulty. Also, there were other defective items, such as faulty motor mounts and faulty transsmission mounting bolts.

Under warranty, reported the trunk and rear spoiler for water leakage. Every time dealer answer, resealed trunk. At 5th attempt to repair leak owner requested spoiler to be replaced dealer refused to replace, owner frustrated. 2.engine consumes 1 quart of oil every 1500-3000 miles dealer responds with no problems. 2nd attempt dealer performed oil consumption test results: no problem, owner reports still consumes oil at same rate. 3.clutch:owner reported that it was difficult to shift out of 1st and 3rd gear dealer responded no problem drivetrain. All reported during warranty period. Owner continues to drive vehicle although problem still continues.dealer serviced vehicle overfilled all fluids owner did not discover problem until after 500 miles of driving owner informed dealer that they would be responsible for damages to vehicle at a later date due to pre mature wear. Current:30000 later engine continues to consume oil at higher rate app. 1000 miles 1 qt of oil , clutch burned out at 62000 miles currently in shop and gmac will not repair in lue of proir service history.

While driving on the highway the vehicle completely cuts off without warning, cause unknown. Dealer cannot identify the problem.

Driving along and engine quits, car stalls, and won't restart for 15 to 30 minutes. No certain speed, happened at 55mph as well as 15mph.no warning, just quits.had checked out numerous times, can not find anything wrong.anti theft light is usually on at this time.help, costing lots of money and not being fixed.see lots of other complaints the same as mine.someone must know something.

Vehicle lost power then engine quit. Dealer mechanic indicated intake manifold gasket failure to let cooling fluid into crankcase oil. Gasket replaced, engine flushed 5 times ($480) suggested engine overhaul. Two weeks, engine failed with knock due to previous problem. Received letter from dealership warning of possible intake gasket failure resulting in engine replacement. No satisfaction from gm, found 5 identical complaints on nhtsa web site, attorney contacted, we will both investigate. My situation is, "no car, still paying payment." observation: gross diregard for obvious engineering flaw, smaks of firestone without the deaths.

There is a leak on the top of the engine. Also, throughair vents a burning gas smell is coming insideofvehicle. Pleaseadd more information.

Driving and engine quits, no warning lights, just stops, shuts down.sometimes it restarts right off, other times it takes up to 30 minutes.have had it in for service many times and plugged into diagnostics.shows no problems or error codes.don't know what to do next.need help.

Check engine light keeps coming on after have major tune up after the 30,000 miles.also the vehicle hesitates as if to stop then speeds up.

I can't believe there are no defects investigations in the database for the 1996 pontiac grand am given the number of complaints submitted concerning this vehicle.what has to happen a death?my vehicle like several others i've read about , stalls at any given time with the most recent being on the interstate where i had to take the median for safety.otherwise i would have been run over by a rig.this car is unsafe and was reported by the previous owner as such; however, no investigation has taken place.the car just shuts off in the middle of traffic, losing all power (including steering and brakes).all the instrument panel lights come on and the car is dead; that's right dead.leaving the occupants in the middle of traffic hoping they're not going to smashed by speeding traffic considering no signal will work and neither do brake lights or anything.people's lives are at stake here and complaints are being handled by this department as if they couldn't care less.how could anyone with their right mind not assess this situation as a safety violation.the reports for this same defect are just too numerous and if you can't see it then i need a higher office and this office needs to close shop!

Engine failed due to internal lower intake manifold gasket failure on rear engine cylinder bank, causing internal leakage of engine coolant into internal engine parts.

Also had to have shifter assemply replaced because the key was sticking in the ignition.

Seat belt failed to restrain driver during accident, causing injury.

When making sudden stop while going only 5 mph, front passenger seat moved forward a few inches on its track while occupant was in it.occupant was belted as well, and the seatbelt did lock up (like it should have), but however, the seat moving forward on its track caused occupant in that seat to be "pushed" against the locked up seatbelt (causing some stomach pain).worried that in a real crash, seat will move forward and cause belted occupant to be injured more than if the seat stayed in position like it should (translation: occupant could be killed in an otherwise survivable accident for vehicle type).noticed that front right passenger seat was a little wobbly when you would sit in it when i first bought it, but dealer said it was "normal" for this car.will request dealer to replace seat with new one.

While drivingseat belt comes loose without warning. Consumer had contacted the manufacturer, but they stated that they are unable to repair the deffect without any cost to the consumer.

Male component of the seat belt had a plastic clip that has fallen off causing the belt clip to spin on the belt and not grip tightly.nlm

Also see odi id 706555.this complaint is in addition to that one.again, the right front passenger seat moved forward on its track when i had to brake suddenly while driving at 35 mph.occupant in seat was the same as when the seat failed before.oc.

Brakes did not grip properly when trying to slow down for a turn.this resulted in an accident.the rotors were resurfaced 3500 miles previously and had to be replaced prior to this accident (2 days).the brakes (front) had to be relined and were at a rating of 7b 3500 miles previously.this appears to be both a faulty installation and manufacturers problem.

A few days after buying 96 grand am. I noticed the brakes didnt work effectively. When coming to a stop the car would jerk several times and continue to jump forward. This has happened more times than i care to count. Each time a near collision. I dont drive at all when it rains it wont stop at all.

I drive 50 miles a day to and from work thats the reason for high milege on my car. I still believe this car should last longer than its payments.

While driving consumer attempted to engage brakes.pedal went to the floor and brakes failed.consumer had to take vehicle out of gear and "run off" road to make stop.dealer diagnosed that a "push rod" clip was missing from master cylinder.clip was replaced twice, but problem reoccured twice respectively.finally dealer replaced "semi-worn" front brake pads and problem did not reoccur.dealer determined that when brake pads wear down the "push rod" clip comes out of place(clip connects to brake pedal) causing brake loss.ts

Brake pedal started going almost all the way to the floor, with no warning of any kind. It does not do this every time. The brake system is all original, the pads and shoes were checked recently when the tires were replaced, and has shown no problems until this point. The fluid level is ok, there are no visible signs of leakage anywhere.

My main problem is the steering column. When it is time to take the key out of the ignition it gets stucks. Your unable to take the key out until the car wants to let it go. Sometimes this ends up to be a 45 minute to an hour wait. The place i bought it from said they fixed it. Of course, aftr the warranty was up so wasn't the key once again getting stuck. Had the whole steering column replaced for about $500.00 no problems for about 2 months and now once again key is getting stuck.

When driving at any speed, transmission went out, causingvehicle to stall/jerk.uponapplying the brakes, theywent to the floorboard, resulting in extended stopping distance.also, steering is turning on its own, anddealer can't determine the problem.

Failure of the passenger side air bag, consumer was not involved in an accident and the passenger's side air bag deployed.power steering pump needs replaced.leak around air intake.clicking noise occurs in the right front wheel area.

Owner states that steering arm bolts were faulty. Also, there were other defective items, such as faulty motor mounts and faulty transsmission mounting bolts.

Lower control arm bushings are experiencing excessive wear and have disintegrated. Consumer was informed that this is due to a factory related defect. Also, front struts are noisy and squeaky, a metal to metal sound. Dealer replaced tie rods when crushing sound in front end was first heard.

While driving vehicle at (10) mph the driver's side wheel collasped because the inner tie rod broke.

During inclement weather conditions, water was leaking through the vehicle fire wall onto the electrical harness leading into the taillights. The consumer has a concern that the condition may lead to a electrical short.

Drivers side interior floor keeps getting extremely wet. Just the other day there was about an inch of standing water on the backseat drivers side floor board. All windows are always up and there is even water on the floor boards when it doesn't rain.

Every time it rains i get water on the floor of my car, this has been an ongoingi have had to replace the instrument cluster because it went out on me wile driving because the wires behind on the firewall are wet.

I can deal with most of the things that went wrong with my car but i dont think that i should have to deal with my interior coming down from my doors and my paint fading and chipping and even my cd player dont work.. I know it is a 1996 but these things should not be messing up already.. I think there should be a recall on these things.. I should not have to pay out my pocket for things like this.

Early 2002 paint started peeling off my rear quarter panels of my 1996 black grand am. Not long after the frontquarter panels started doing the same thing. At the time, the areas where the paint were starting to peel were small but as time went by the area started peeling more. Now, i bought the car used in 1998 with only 26,000 km on it and the paint was fine (original paint). I have always had my car rust proofed every year as well in the spring and fall i get a complete interior and exterior shampoo and wax done ( i take care of it). The paint did not rust first....it just starting peeling. At the present time september 2003 it only as 93,000km on it. Because the warranty had expired, being that ibought it used and did not have the extra money tobuy beyond the original warranty that was left on the car, i could not afford to take it to get repainted. Also i had just beenpromoted to a new job within my company and my hours were crazy. Late fall of 2002 i became very ill and from january till march 2003 i was hospitalized and was not sure if i was going to pull through...i did. But in june of 2003 i was back in hospital having major surgery and am now at home still recovering from it. The reason i am telling you this is because that is why i have not been able to proceed with the peeling paint on my car.i recently found out about the paint delaminating on the gm cars, which includes the year of my car.i called gm and they said there was no recall. I found out on the internet about court cases here in ontario, which were related to the same problem i was having. I went to a gm dealership...they took pictures, sent and called the gm representative for this area and the answer was no...they were not going to repaint the car...end of discussion. Now i am not sure what to do because surface rust has started to appear.i want to paint it before i rustproof it because by next spring it will rust through which will be a more expensive situation.
