The manufacturer's assembly located in the steering column, refered to as the "clockspring"is defective- causing the following problems: (1) a false airbag warning lamp, (2) un-commanded windshield wiper operation, and (3)intermittant operation (on/off) of the cruise control system.horn failure is also a known symptom of a defective "clockspring".i believe all of the above symptoms can be classified as a safety issue and it should be the responsibility of the manufacture (chysler corporation) to replace the defective component at their cost.nlm

The dashboard airbag warning light began to stay on continually.under warranty, in march of 2000, the dealer replaced both the airbag and the clockspring assembly.the problem appeared to be fixed.however, i began noting several months ago that the airbag warning light will come on at random times.i spoke to the dealer's service rep and i was told that the clockspring was again defective.i have learned that chrysler has replaced some 124,000 of these at customer cost. This is a definite safety issue and chrysler needs to do a recall asap.don't let them stall for years as you let them do with the engine fire recall.i just had that done, some 2 and a half years after the problem was apparent.

Cruise control does not work/ horn doesn't blow, and the airbag light stays on. Consumer feels its the clock spring.
The air bag warning light comes on intermittently. According to the information given to me by a local chyrsler dealer, this problem is typically caused by a faulty clock spring, and the driver's side air bag will not deploy when the warning light is on. The clock spring was replaced once under warranty on june 6, 1997, at 7922 miles. My complaint at that time was a crunching sound that came from the area of the steering column, when the steering wheel was turned in either direction.

I have a 97 plymouth grand voyager that i have had for 2 yrs. When i bought the van everything was working properly. For about a year now i have been having problems with the electrical system. First my cruise control stopped working, then my horn, now my blinkers only work sometimes and alot of times i have to turn on my bright lights for the blinkers to work. The airbag light is always on which means it is not functioning correctly. These are big problems with the wiring system and it is very expensive to have the whole thing rewired. My husband is a mechanic and he said it will cost over $1000 to have everything fixed correctly.

While driving and without warning vehicle shut off.mechanicindicated there was a malfunction inengine harness, causing an electrical shortage.
Ibought the car in feburaury. I brought it back in 3 days with the the van making a noise in it they replaced the serpentene belt. I no longe herd the noise for a little while. When i bought it i was told they would fix the a/c i would have to bring it back in to fix it. I brought it back and they said it was fixed nd it only worked for the drive half way home. I then brought it back for four days while theytook aparrt the dash board and replaced the evaporator. I checked to see if the a/c worked and it did but i turned off due to little gas in the tank. The next time i used it was in april to go to the beach wth friends. It worked going up there and then on the way back it was not working and my van over heated. I then brought it to them and asked them to look at it. They then rigged a fuse to the clutch to keep the fan on at all times so it would not over heat. I felt that they were going to charge me fr it to be repaired for this time it was after the 30 day warranty so there for i was waiting to see if i could get money together to fix it. I then stated having problems with it over heating so i called them afte another mechaniclooked at it and said it was a fire waiting tohappen and things were not put in correctly, he even told them and thy told him to tell me to make an appt. So i called and they told me they could not get it until wed. I explained i had to go out of town and that it was a fire hazard. I then asked if i could bring it in to have him look att it an he said no it would be wed. I tried to have them lok and see if they could come up with a game plan. I then called them yesteday and he said i refusedto bring it inand that is not te case. I told him i was going to bring it to you and e said go a head and then hung up on me.i then called back talked to the owner and he listened temporarly until i told him i used the a/c once he then said i was being dishonest and then at that point i told him he has no right calling me a lier .

Faulty lifters in my 1997 plymouth voyager allows oil to be lost through the tail pipe.
My plymouth voyager was pouring oil profusely.upon taking it to a dealership service dept., i discovered i had to replace the head gasket, cam seals, and exhaust manifold, just 1900k out of my extended warranty.3 days later a knocking noise was heard, upon taking back to dealership they said it was the timing belt, pulley, and tensioner this time.upon questioning them whether this malfunction could have been the result of their previous work, they responded they did not have to touch these parts in the previous repair.i in turn called an independent garage who confirmed for me that these parts in fact had to be removed.due to my mistrust of this dealership i took this second problem to the independent garage.they informed me of a problem with the plymouth neon head gasket failure, and that i had the same engine in my plymouth voyager, only difference was mine has a metal plate and the neon's have a plastic plate on top.i looked this problem up, and it is huge for the plymouth neons, so i called chrysler to request some assistance, and currently have been turned down.since this is one and the same engine, and since chryler extended the warranty up to 5 years/1000,000km, i feel they should at least try to assist a loyal customer of their products.the repair bill for just the replacement of head gasket, cam seals, and manifold totaled $1002.19 with labor included.this was ridiculous, and way too costly.

Consumer will provide vin# upon receipt. The spindle/the timing chain is no longer useful. The mechanic said that the timing needs to be replaced. When trying to purchase, they were told that consumer needs to buy the timing chain and wheel which is now sold together .she could not purchase them separatly.
When driving at approximately 65-70mph the engine cuts off and causes the power steering and the abs brakes to become inoperable.the dealer cannot duplicate the problem because it happens intermittently. An accident has occurred as a result of this problem, no injuries were sustained.

While driving vehicle caught on fire.
This van, slightly over 1 year old, has a history of stalling, windshield wipers going on without reason and off, radio breaking, tape player making noise when not used and the brakes went out the first time, i was told it was fixed, and the very next day they went out again almost causing a serious accident and deaths.this is serious and i would like to know actions taken by nhtsa concerning this as i have seen many other instances/complaints of stalling, windshield wiper problems and serious brake defects and breakdowns on nhtsa's customer complaints on the internet.i believe that nhtsa should give more serious investigative attention against daimler chrysler concerning the stalling and brake problems as this is putting people's lives in danger it seems on a constant and re-occuring basis!

The engine locked up on me while driving.the oil pressure light came on and before i had the chance to pull over the engine locked up.according to the owner's manual the warning light will come on for 4 minutes then go off.my engine locked up before the warning signal went off indicating that i had less than 4 minutes to respond.daimler chrysler has agreed to pay one half of the repairs costs, however, i feel that the oil screen in the oil pan became clogged as a result of mechanical failure.i have maintained my vehicle according to the owners manual.i feel that this engine design is defective and would like for daimler chrysler to stand behind thier product by completely paying for the new engine that i had to have.i firmly believe that a 1997 plymouth voyager with only 53,865 miles should not need a new engine, when the van has been properly driven and maintained.

Since the late winter of 97/98, the vehicle in question has suffered occasional inexplicable stalls. Usually they would occur when the engine was warm and the car had come to a routine stop (e.g. Red light). The car would then stall. More alarmingly, on several occasions it has stalled while moving in traffic creating a potentially dangerous situation. The car has been returned to the dealer for correction over a half dozen times. Twice the "co-pilot" was installed. The dealer has been unable to recreate or diagnose the problem. Their only suggestions have been to switch to a lower octane fuel and to use only a single key on the keychain. Neither ceased the problem. Subsequently they have only continued to say, bring it back. In the interim, a potentially tragic hazard continues to exist. Please advise as to any alternatives. The primary driver is my wife, patricia flynn, work # 617-424-0665.

While driving on the highway consumer heard a slapping noise from the engine.dealership indicated that the belt brokeoff the edge, and the belt tensioner needed to be replaced.also, dealer indicated that this was a common problem with these vehicles.
Belt that hookmotor to engine keeps coming off. Tookvehicle to dealer, and had replaced belt.but, problem still exists.
Belt tensioner device replaced 5 times.
Serpentine belt froze/came off and vehicle shut off suddenly without prior notice. Serpentinebelt came off 11 times. Dealershipwas aware ofproblem.
Driving in rain causes serp. Belt to slip off has happened 3 times causing steering to go out car to overheat and battery to go dead. There is a tsb out on this problem after the 2 time had the work done as described in the service bulletin on may 18th. On june 5th while driving in the rain it happened again causing steering to go out and van overheated. Had to have the bracket replaced as described in the bulletin and it didn't fix the problem. I contacted chysler but to them it wasn't a big enough safety issue. I am unsure what to do now we followed the service procedure and the problem still is not corrected. The date below is the latest of three dates this problem occurred.
Driving in the rain/snow causes serp belt to slip off.over the last 5 years it has slipped numerous times(8+), after careful inspection of the belt and pulleys the belt was reinstalled or replaced. After the belt causing a sensor break, had mechanic troubleshootand it was deemed the tensioner needed to be replaced and the serp belt replace as well as sensor.after this maintenance, the vehicle continued to lose serp belt.the car has overheated, battery drained and has become very hard to steer or steering appears to lock after losing the belt that controls all accessory functions, alternator, ac, power steering, water pump.multiple accidents have been avoided due to quick thinking.
Serpentine belt (powering the alternator, power steering etc.) has come off repeatedly.since the belt powers the power steering, this is significantly unsafe.
Tensioner broke , andserpentine belt fell off, causing the vehicle to stall out. Dealer contacted.
Exhaust tail pipe failed.
Exhaust muffler failed.
Air conditioner gives off an unpleasant odor; which, causes difficulty breathing, nausea headache, and vomiting.
Air conditioner would overheat due to fangoing/blowing backwards. The engine had blown the head gaskets at 16,000 miles. The transmission went out. The vehicle had made popping sounds & then broke down.
This has been a repeated problem that the dealer cannot duplicate.the problem is that the air conditioner fails during a long duration sustained high speed (highway driving) trip that they obviously cannot duplicate.the problem exists and ocurrs every time in the described senario.however, since they cannot duplicate, they will not replace the air conditioner as i requested in this last visit (07/30/1999).this problem has spanned three summers, ever since owning the vehicle.i believe that the dealer has faithfully worked in my interest to correct, however, after exhausting every alternative with no other solution, i am still left with a faulty air conditioner.i plan to contact the manufacturer next to petition a solution.
The air conditioner did not work. The dealer examined the vehicleand found that theair conditioner evaporator was defective.at 44000miles another evaporator was replaced. Currently, another evaporator was neededfor this same vehicle.chrysler plymouth ford replaced the a/c at 22k miles, autoway dodge replaced the a/c at 48k miles, and again at 75k miles. *sc

Cruise control, horn, back-up lights, windshield washer front & rear, air bag light stays on.
Overall, a good vehicle.it's just that these two items are safety related and should perform better.

While driving at night headlights will only shine 45-50 feet ahead of vehicle on low beam, dealer has adjusted lights, however problem still occurs.. Consumer was informed by dealership that that was the design of the vehicle, the bulbs were replaced with lighter ones however the problem remained.
While driving at night headlights would get condensation inside of the lens that would cause thelights to become dim. This would pose a hazard to the driver due to a lack of visibility on the roads. There would be no light reflection while driving because of a lack of brightness. Will be taking vehicle to dealer to have headlight covers checked.
Headlights are so frosted/yellowed you can.t see at night.the lights on this vehicle were not that good when they were new. But now that the plastic has broken down from exposure to the environment, the lights are useless. My older cars had headlights made of glass and did not seem to have this problem.
Headlights are very dim, coloring is very yellowish and not bright, need to use high beams to see at night, took vehicle to dealer and was informed by mechanic that lights meet standards.consumer was then informed by a chrysler represenative that running lights be installed at consumers expense.
Consumer complained about the headlights.bothheadlights have glazed over, almost opaque, resulting in extremely reduced visibility during thenight. Thus, obstructing consumer's view while driving.dealership indicated nothing they could do about it, only to replace each headlight unit. Each headlight unitwould cost $263.00at consumer's expense.

The contact was able to safely stop the vehicle and upon examining the vehicle, the contact noticed that one of the fuel tank straps had fractured due to corrosion. The contact applied a temporary strap as a remedy. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 175,000.

Part failure w/parts currently under unannounced recall, therefore dealer not willing to repair at this time. No safety defec tlisted in summary.
Strong odor of gasoline that seems to come from the engine compartment is present, but not consistently. I have taken the vehicle to a local garage and they could smell the gas also, but could not locate the problem. I then brought the van to the dealer. After hearing about a recall on theses vans because of a fuel line seal problem, i took the vehicle to the dealer and contacted chrysler. The dealer also could not find the problem, however the gasoline odor was not present that day. Chrysler would not authorize the recall repair since the dealer did not detect a problem and the recall did not involve 3.0 liter engines. Since i have not been able to find the problem, i continue to drive the vehicle. I would like to know if anyone is having this type of problem with this particular vehicle.

We just had our van into the dealer ship last week it was surging while i was driving it. The dealer said it was the transmission and fixed the problem. Three days later it was doing the same thing and also shifted into neutral while i was driving on the freeway at 65 mph. I had my one year old with me at the time. It was a very scary experience. Had we known that chrysler had and still has defective transmissions we never would have purchased this vehicle. In looking on the internet i have seen manycomplaints about chrysler's transmission as far back as the 1989 model. How can they get away with this for so long? i consider this van to be a lemon. Unfortunatly the lemon law states that the problem has to have happened within the first 18,000 miles. What recourse do i have in returning this obvious lemon?

Failure of transmission range sensor and transmission front pump on a vehicle that's just at 6 years old, with <70000 miles on it. Car did not respond when shifted into reverse. Transmission completely failed while driving the car with no previous warning.mechanic at dealership said transmission was completely destroyed and need a new transmissionfor my 2 year old car.after talking with other plymouth voyager owners, i have found the same problem to have happened with their car needing new transmission at a cost of $2,000 -$4000.after reporting my problem to chrylser, they say no such problem exists. No other problems reported.chrysler is failing to deal with the problem as a whole, in stead just on a case by case basis.clearly there is a manufacturer defect in these transmissions where they are not made to last the life of the car.as of 1994, chrysler no longer warranties the power train which would include the transmission for 100,000 miles.i suspect it is because their were too many warranty claim.the only way to have this warrnatied now is under an extended warranty.if i had know of this great problem with these cars, perhaps i would have purchased the extended warranty.
Consumer stated that while driving there was a "boom" noise thatcame from the engine compartment and engine stalled.vehicle was inoperative, had to be towed. Mechanic said thatdifferential pin had come loose, damagingthe motor in transmission.
At 16,000 showed signs of transmission failure, brought back many times. Did not fix. Please e-mail or phone me.
At 35 mph & above, the transmission emits a whistle or whine. The dealer said its the ring & pinon gears making the noise but all cars do it. If you take your foot off the gas or shift into neutral at 35 mph the noise stops. Its been getting worse in the last month.
Transmission failure under above normal driving conditions.never towed anything, driven in rural area.more highway miles than city.not alot of starting and stopping so transmission doesn't need to shift alot.also happen on a previously owned 1994 voyager about the same mileage.
Our 1997 voyager had to have transmission replaced at 43000 miles.we contacted the dealer and the manufacturer about the problem and we were told that it was out of warranty.we had regular maintenance done at a national oil franchise.in order to get our van back on the road, we had to pay chrysler $700 for labor.we have since found out through other web sites about secret recalls pertaining to chrysler transmission problems.had we known about this recall, we would have fought them to the end!we feel we are entitled to a refund of our $700 and chrysler should go "public" with these recalls!thank you for your assistance in this matter.sincerely [xxx].parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
When driving at 35 to 40 mph the there is a loud clucking noise, and the vehicle shifts very hard.
Consumer is original owner of vehicle and has had 2 transmissions fail without warning while driving.dealer has not been able to determine cause of failures.first failure occured at 55k miles, second at 119k miles. Ts
Automatic transmission dropped out of drive without warning while going at highway speed of 65 mph. Transmission would not stay in gear. Service technician dropped transmission pan and discovered metal shavings in pan. Automatic transmission was properly serviced at plymouth dealership on the two recommended maintenance schedules recommended by the owners manual: 17,000 and 35,000 miles. The scheduled maintenance did not discover any problems with the transmission.
It all began with a "bump" in the transmission when the ac was on.soon after that startedtransmission would lock into "limp home" mode betwen 30 and 35 mph.it kicked into limp home mode on the highway, while i was driving 65 and put my family in jeapordy.i parked in in the driveway and left it there for 2 months.when i decided to try it again to get it to a mechanic, it wouldn't even go in reverse. Brought it to a chrysler dealership in the area to be repaired at the tune of $2,000 for an overhaul.metal all throughout the tranny.the dealership we bought it from denies any tsb's on the vehicle and has been quite nasty to us, so we brought it to another chrysler dealer.how do we go about getting this paid for by daimler chrysler?
While driving transmission locked up, causing loss of power, cause unknown.please give any further details.
Air conditioner would overheat due to fangoing/blowing backwards. The engine had blown the head gaskets at 16,000 miles. The transmission went out. The vehicle had made popping sounds & then broke down.
Have taken car for repairs three times to dealer bertera chryslerfor the same problem, which is the automatic transmission. Each time i try to get it fix i explained to the mechenic that the transmission is slipping. The first time i took the van for repair on 10/18/00 i explained to the manager the transmision was slipping and smoke was coming out of the botton of the van, there return me the vehicle the next day saying nothing was wrong with the tranny. The second time was on 12/29/00 itook the van back to the dealer for the same problem transmission slipping they replied other things where wrong with the van and charge 53.00 for repairs on the van and said they adjust the tranny, but could not find any problems of why my van would bang into gear when at celerated supposeone mechanic took van for drive and still no problem . So then i took my van back for the third time for the same problem on transmission andtold the mechenicit started to happen again, the transmission started to slip and smoke from the botton of the van so i polite ask asked the manager to please put in a new one that this is my third time coming back for the same problem. There reply was we'll take alook at it then again they adjusted it but never opened up the transmission to look inside of it . Now the transmissions is completely broken and then they decide to look inside of it and found burned oil and pieces of metal in fluid and needs replacement now that warranty expired by 1003 miles . So my complaints is that they never really checked the transmission from the inside each time i brought it in for repairs they never anything to the inside of the tranny , theyadjust bands on tranny till warranty expired. Now i can't make payments to the bank and fix the van at the same time please notify me if you can help me with my problem against bertera chrysler dealer ship or what are my options in these situation. Thank you very much avery tired and angry comsumer angelica jimenez.

The gear shift handlewill move from park into any gear before putting the key into the ignition.
Enginechecklight comes on due tobad vibration, won't shift into gear, like it's running out of gas.the dealer replaced the oxygen sensor as a possible cause but it wasn't.then, fuel filter was replaced but it wasn't again.finally, the #3 spark plug wire was replaced and the problem was solved.
After putting vehicle into park, while vehicle was turned off, vehicle jumped out of park into reverse, causing it to hit another vehicle.
Transmission would shift into gear without being turned on, and had rolled backwards.
Vehicle was not started. However, gear lever will move on its own.gears move without placing foot on the brake.consumer adds, there is a problem w/airbag, because the light is constantly on which prohibits the horn from working. (she concerned because she has small children) *scc

My daughter (front, passenger) & i (driver) were in 2-car auto. Accident 10-06-99. Her seatbelt didn't restrain her; she struck her head twice (1-on windshield, 2-on dash). Airbag opened *after* she fell back in seat. Airbag & seatbelt operated defectivel
I am writing about the failure of the gen saftey belts releasing unintentionally.chrysler is refusing to replace the seat belts.
Seat belt do not hold car seats very stable.
Seatbelt failed multiple times after proper installation of 2 different types of child safety seats.in addition, seatbelt failed with normal repetitive use.manufacturer denies problem.it is the middle bench seat right side
This seatbelt is too easily unlatched by a simple touch of the hand or any other object. Our grand children can easily unlatch the belt and have done so on many occasions. I am also responding to a report viewed on abc news on this date (3-7-2002) concerning the gen3 seatbelt. After the report, it is obvious why the seatbelt is so easliy opened by children. It took the report on tv to answer my question of why the kids had done this so often, without really trying to unlatch the belt. This is a danger and should be addressed with a replacement or some type of protective device.
Two months ago, i contacted chyrsler about the middle bench seat belt, passenger side, coming unlatched.they informed me to go a dealership, of their choice, and have it checked out, which i did.after about an hour of waiting, i was told that all seat belts met safety compliance.three and a half weeks ago, i had to come to a sudden stop from 55mph (someone turned out in front of me) and my 3 1/2 year old son came flying out of his high back booster seat because the seatbelt came unlatched.i have since, tried to latch the seat belt and it will not stay latched.i took my van back to the dealership today, 7/12/01, and they confirmed that the seat belt was in deed not latching and would order a new part to replace it.i was then told that i would not only have to pay for installation of the new part, but also pay for the part as well.i was also given the "run around" from chrysler headquarters customer service department stating that the defect warranty was only for 36000 miles or three years.i feel as though it should always be covered as long as the vehicle is still running becasue it is required by law to wear a seat belt.not to mention, i could have lost my child if i had hit that car or had been hit by someone else, when i was told just two months prior that all seat belts were in safety compliance.
Dealership contacted the consumer to inform him that the seat belt recall 02v076000 and air bag clock spring recall 02v293000 repairs were already performed. Then, consumer never tookvehicle to dealer have the recall repairsperformed.manufacturer will be contacted.
I am writing to support a recall of the gen3" type seat belt buckles in daimler chrysler vehicles.the buckle is dangerously prone to un latching during auto accidents and represents a safety hazard to as many as 16 million drivers.
Rear seat belt retractor tightened pinningchild in seat when trying to releasechildfrom selt belt .
When releasing driver's side seatbelt and allowing shoulder belt to retract back into retractor, shoulder belt will not come back out , it will become stuck in retractor, causing loss of protection.

Failure on the built in css, the css shoulder belt will not retract, causing the child to be traped in the seat.
To whom it may concern my name is katie olson i drive a 1997 plymouth voyager van with the built in car seats. That is what sold me the van i thought they would be safer for my children. Last week i took my kids to the park and i went to release the belt and it retracted to my two year old daughters neck. I could not get it off of here i had to cut it off after a half hour of trying to loosen it. It was so tight i couldn't put my finger between her throat and the belt. This has never happened before but i talked to a lawyer and they told me to contact you. Thank you for your time.
Lifted the seat belt of the intergrated css to get the child out and the seat belt fell down on the child and pinned the child to the intergrated css,had to take the vehicle to a dealer to release the child.
Child intergrated seat would not pull down. Owner notified chrysler on this matter, where they sent owner a video tape on how to use seat, but problem remains.
Consumer has leg cramps due to the design of the seats in his vehicle. The seat does not come out to legs when sitting. Consumerfeels like he is holding the seat up when driving. After driving 20 miles legs will cramp because there's no support underneath knees. And if he puts the back of seat up, he looses 3-to-4 inches because the back comes over the seat itself.

While driving about 5 mphsteering wheel locked up whitout prior warning. Consumer kept driving straight. Vehicle was towed to dealer, and they stated that steering wheel was not locked attime when vehicle was bought. However, vehicle was fine. Prior to steering wheel locking up, the consumer had problems with cruise control disengaging, the windshield wipers malfunctioning and check the engine light come on and staying, but had all fixed.recently, the consumer says the back lights work intermittently.the consumer is concerned about steering wheel possibly locking again in the future.

On 11/13/01 i was involved in a crash.i was alone in my van, traveling between 30 and 35 mph when another car pulled out in front of me on my passenger side about 20 feet ahead from behind a parked delivery truck.i applied the brakes and slowed down .
I have owned three differnt plymouth mini-vans and have had the same problem with all of them . This dates back to the first one i owned in 1987. During the winter ,i have the occasion to drive through heavy snow and on three separte occasions ,i have had the belt come off the car as i was driving through snow drifts of one to two feet high . When this happens ,the power sreering on the car does not function and it becomes a saftey issue as far as trying to steer the car. It also strands you in the middle of nowhere when you have no way of getting the belt back on without the help of some can of road service. When my dealer was confronted about the problem , they say that it never happens. Its been my experience that this can be a major problem if you live in snow country. Just curious if this happens to other people andhow often it has been reported. Thank you.

Strut towers are corroded to the point you can see through the top off the strut tower halfway around the top. On my 1997 plymouth mini van a crack has occured on the left front strut tower.this is the only place on the van that has rusted.
