The contact owns a 1995 plymouth neon. While driving various speeds, the air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. On another occasion, the contact stated that while reversing, the steering column started smoking. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column coupler and steering harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact also mentioned that the turn signals and interior lighting failed to operate intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 97v169000 (steering). The failure mileage was 60,000.
While driving into the driveway, both air bags deployed causing injuries to our 16 year old daughter.she incurred impact burns and a sprain to her left wrist.
Fan motor goes out and the airbag warning light comes on. When the fan motor comes on, the warning light goes off. Dealer doesn't know what the problem could be.

Brakes failed to work right when my boyfriend wrecked the car which then made him hit the guard rail. The air bags didn't come out. We contacted the place we got the car from but they could not tell us anything.then the transmission went out of it on october 1, 2003. The whole transmission exploded. We were told the place we bought it from did not put in new clutch and pressure plate and throw out bearings in when we had just bought it. We had told them the clutch was making noise.they would not fixed it. They said it was nothing when i took it in; that's just neons they said...my biggest concern beside the tranny and clutch is the air bags not coming out at all...

I would like to inform anyone and everyone about the continued injustice the air bags that we ought to have the right to disconnect these dangerous hazards. I bought this car...with a trade in with a pontiac bonneville..i had bad luck with this neon 1995 model from day i drove..the instrument panel fail and they sometimes work..like ex..to see how much gas, and how fast i am going..odometer..and the temp gauges..they work and most of the time they do not!..i also seen a oil leak and the car seems to use alot of oil..and a very bad smell comes fromunderneath the hood!...i am sick and tired of me having to fix something that i feel is the default of the manufacturer of ply. Neon company should fix these things free of charge!!! i wish somebody will call me soon as possible..i am unsure of how i will be safe or the car catch on fire while me & 2 kids are inside of it..i feel there is something very wrong with this neon!! when i paid a trade in for nicer car, i got this one because it was better fuel miles but after i got this car, i see this was a lemon from day one and i had this car for 2 years and the instruments drop all the time, and i feel it's the car manufacture should fix this immediately!i am very upset and hope you all see to it that i get this car looked into by via paid for by ply., manuf...thank you, willa in tn.

The first problem began with the timing belt breaking, i returned to casino auto sales to find a solution,their mechanic " fixed" the problem so i thought only to have the same problem occur again abouta month and half later with a bad fuel pump added to the problem so i went somewhere else to have that fixed.about a week after i purchased the vehicle i was taken to sears to purchase a new set of tires, i was told by a sears rep. That i was lucky to not have had an accident because the wrong size tires were put on the car which caused me to have problems with the right passenger side tired with wobbling. My vehicle then began to smoke from the steering coloum whenever the head lights are turned on, i havent even bothered to go back to casino because i wouldnt trust them to actuaalt fix it the right and honest way do to the fact that i bought the carwith cash so they basically sold me a lemon.

Fire started inside of vehicle possibly due to short circuit of remote mirror wiring or motor on driver's side.discovered by daughter upon opening driver's door to go to work.at first, she realized that the outside driver's mirror was hanging down from the vehicle.upon opening door, flames emerged from the interior, slightly burning her on the arm.all heavy burn damage seems to be at the area of the motor and switch for the remote mirrors.the interior suffered total loss.no electrical alterations were done to the vehicle.all componets on the vehicle are factory installed.can't seem to get through to chrysler for any assistance.vehicle is of course out of warranty (3yr - 36,000)

Poor design leads to head gasket of plymouth neons to blow frequently.chrysler offers no re-call or financial assistance to customers with this problem.my car has 63,000 miles on it and this has happened 3 times.

Car overheated once/ blew the head gasket and cracked the engine block. This was the first time that the car overheated. A representative from chysler said they had 4000 of the head gaskets currently on back order and they had change manufactorers. I feel that 4000 parts on back order at any given time is alot and may be indicative of a problem.

It was very cold and car began to smoke,engine check light came on. Consumer took vehicle to mechanic,and he said thatit was the master cylinder.
My car overheated about two weeks prior. Took it in to a mechanic but they couldn't identify a problem so they thought it was low on coolant. Then, my car overheated again, started idling rough, and proceeded to pour smoke out back. You could smell the coolant burning. I understand this is a problem on all neons pre-99, yet chrysler and dodge refuse to recall the cars.
The air conditioning failed at 33000 miles and should not have, the head gasket is still hanging in there but is leaking a little each day, no excuse, cooling fans never ran after you shut the car off, sometimes one will run and sometimes both will run. They will at times shut down and leave me enough battery to start the car or it may not. The car is not running hot, less than half way on the gage. The car is maintained with coolant flushed and changed yearly. Help wirh this piece of junk. Plymouth should replace head gaskets , a/c units on every one made at there expense.

There is no extended warranty that they're offering.since the cause of head gasket failure is primarily due to poor design by the manufacturer, it should be the responsiblity of the manufacturer to correct it or pay for repair.
While having a routine oil change at a "10 minutue" oil change place the service person noted that there was a problem and to get it checked out.after bringing it to a dealer they told me it was the head gasket. After checking around at other local garages, we found that there were many other cases of this same incident with the neon vehicle. When i called chrysler about this they said they werenot aware of thisproblem , which is not possible - but after many phone calls and long discussions, they offered to pay for parts, which was helpful but not enough since the service person at the car dealer had said the part was obviously machined wrong and was defective- but they were also not going to help us with the cost.this left me with a$ 534.26 bill to pay for the service - which was alot of money to spend when this was obviously something that should have been recalled. I n may of '98 i traded the car in- didn't need the hassles any more or to put more money into it.now i see how many other people had the same problem- i'm very frustrated- i've called chrysler again after finding that people have had only $100 or $200 deductibles to pay & i payed over $500.00 for this. Not fair for anyone.please do what you can to recall this-i know it's not the law to have to reim burse you , but the not-so-helpful chrysler employee- said that they will reimburse if a recall is done.too many unfortunate people have paid hundreds of dollars they probably couldn't afford, and many more will too if this matter is not resolved.

Oil is leaking out of head gasket on to exhaust manifold and in to manualtransmission gear box due to faulty composite gasket. Several people have complained to dc, some people dc will fix and some not. Have heard of rumored "goodwill policy". To me dc is admitting guilt by tsb090598.

Chrysler has a secret assistance program about this part.there have been numberous of failures reported to chrysler about the head gasket.when i called the chrysler hot line i was told that there was an assistance program for 10 year / 100,000 miles but because i have 97,000 miles they will not help me.if it had failed at 50,000 they would help me.they feel like the car is at the end of it life so they do not want to provide me with any assistance.i guess that they do not have very much faith in their product to last very long.so i am being punished because i was lucky and my head gasket did not fail at 50,000 miles so chrysler will not help.

I recently discovered that my 1995 plymouth neon has a blown head gasket. The dealer that i took it to for repairs told me that it was no longer under warrenty, but that i could contact chrysler to see if they would cover the repairs. My car is in excellent shape and only has 63,000 miles on it. Chrysler has declined to cover any of the cost of parts and service for this repair, despite the fact that they are aware that head gaskets are a defect in this car. I have done some research and discovered that many neon owners are fighting this same battle. I own a 1995 plymouth neon,recently i noticed an oil leak,come to find out in my investigation that most neons have had the same problem from 1995 to 1999.the head gasket can fail at just about any mileage ,from 10'000 on up.the chrysler corp. Is being afforded the luxery of handling this problem on a case to case basis, under there secret warranties program ,which means that a person ignorant of this evident problem would more than likely pay more for repairs than a person with knowledge of the problem ,this is a very unfair way to let this problem be handled , i believe chrysler should be made to recall this problem head gasket ,so that all consumers can be treated equally and honestly. Was told by local mechanic and by a chrysler dealership mechanic that this is a known problem withchrysler head gaskets and that there was a secret warranty. A representative from chysler said they had 4000 of the head gaskets currently on back order and they had change manufactorers. I feel that 4000 parts on back order at any given time is alot and may be indicative of a problem.

Head gasket blew engine. This head gasket is a known problem on the neon and mitsubishi engines. There's an article in the march 1999 issue of motorservice magazine confirming the problem. Chrysler issued serviced bulletins, but no recall.it probably would have cost chrysler $200-400 to replace the head gasket which would have avoided the $4000 bill for a new engine. My car could have been serviced one month prior while it was in the dodge dealership for other repairs. Chyrsler did agree to pay for the parts and i paid for the labor $1400. I believe chyrsler should have paid for the entire cost since this is a known problem that they had not addressed.i did't expect to replace an engine on a 4 year old car.

Since my engine went out, i have talked to 17 mechanics and i have found out that the engine in the neon is considered a throw away engine and that they are only expected to average around 100,000 miles, a fact that isnt told to the general public and should be.i am a single mother with a low income and the money i put out on that car was a fortune for me.i would just like to see other people be protected from being mislead into buying a car that is going to go out on them shortly after they buy it also.something needs to be done about bad craftsmanship and dealers misleading people when selling used cars like this. I was led to believe "these little cars go forever" when indeed it was common knowledge among the dealers and the company that builds these cars that my car, at the time of purchase, only had an estimated 5,000 miles left on the engine and that the cost of the repairs are almost as much as i paid for the car.also in my talking with different mechanics, i found out that changing the head on the engine, which is what the dealer wants to do to my car to the tune of about 1500 dollars, will cause the rings in the lower section of the engine to fail in about 2 to 3 months later, which will cost me around another 1500 dollars.the dealer was quite embarrassed when i mentioned this to them.consumers need some kind of protection from this.

In august of 2000, i had my oil changed and noticed a few weeks later that i was low in oil.when i had my oil changed again in november they told me that i had an oil leak and that the cam seal needed replaced and it was.on january 4, 2001, i had my oil changed, and a few weeks later noticed that my oil was low again.i replaced the oil and noticed that it was continuously using about a quart of oil a week. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that i had a bad head gasket and to check with the dealership since it was known that the head gasket was bad on the neon and they should replace it under their goodwill policy.i took it to the dealership and they told me that there were no recalls on the head gasket.i then spoke to dave casper at a different dealership to see if he could help me.he told me that there was no good will policy on the head gasket with the amount of miles i had.i even told him that the gasket had been replaced by them previously when the car was still under the original warranty.i even emailed chrysler asking them about the problem and they said sorry to hear about that but it was my problem.i find it hard to believe that i have to pay for a problem that has been caused by a manufacturing flaw in the head gasket, especially when it has been redesigned and i haven't been given the new part.i had the head gasket replaced on february 19, 2001, because i can't wait for my car to blow up before they recall the faulty part.

Our local chrysler dealer kept the car for 12 days and it did not stall so they said it was fine , also put through diagnositcs and found nothing.they also came to roadside with diagnostics and found nothing while it was stalled.however it is still doing the same thing. A special nut and bolt needs to be added to the frame cross member to stop the frame from bumping the driver side floor board.special seal, springs, and nuts and bolts are needed where the exhaust pipe mounts to the manifold - otherwise it comes loose.the light shut off and come back on while driving.

For the air conditioning compressor to fail on a car with only 54,139 miles is unheard of. This 1995 neon has been well taken care of since new over the last 5 1/2 years. This dealer repair will cost about $800. This type of component should last much longer. Regarding the excess number of paint chips on the car--it has chipped easily down to the primerever since it was purchased. It has dozens of chips on the hood and front fenders and even on the roof. I have 2 other cars-one is 4 years old and the other is 20-both with original paint that don't even chip at all. This 1995 neon's hood paint is so covered with touch-up paint that the hood needs to be repainted. This paint is so weak it seems like the action of rain hitting it is enough to cause a chip on its surface. Once again, this car is "babied"-washed and waxed by hand since new and should not have this problem.

I have trulybeen disappointed in this car. It has been nothing but trouble. The complaints are the main ones. However, they happened several times. I had actually contemplated on checking out the lemon law, but didn't know how to go about it. The check enging light kept coming on and they couldn't find the problem ,this finally was fixed after 6 months of repeated problems with it. A year later the check engine light came on again, because of previous problem i waited an extra mile to pull off. My engine was blown ! i had hit a bump, which inturn punctured the oil filter. I am really unhappy with this vehicle.

When shifting the manual transmission gears at approximately 45 mph, the transmission case cracked at the 2 attaching points for the transmission mount tearing the mount from the tranmission allowing the tranmission to drop and the left axle shaft to fall onto the mounting point for the left front lower control arm while the axle shaft was rotating at 45 mph.because the driveshaft fell onto the chassis, the inner cv boot tore spraying the chassis with its lubricant.the steering wheel jerked left and right as the flat surfaces of the inner cv joint rotated into contact with the chassis causing the engine and transmission assembly to rise and fall under the hood.i called the 1-800 customer service number for chrysler and the representative took some information but stated that the company did not show a history of this happening and that chrysler would not cover the repairs.

Problem still exists.consumer states that when the wipers are first replaced they work fine for about 3 weeks, then they begin to streak especially on the drivers side.
