Air bag warning light stays on.technician advised that clock spring in steering column was bad and needed replaced. Since this is a safety item i asked if they did the replacement, and was advised that it was my responsibility to have it repaired at my expense.technician also advised that they have had a problem with this item on this year model.
While driving the srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it home.contacted the dealer, and was informed that the clock spring needed to be replaced.
Air bag light on the instrument panel is illuminated and will not go off.cruise control feature fails to operate, andhorndoes not work. Dealership examinedvehicle and determinedclockspring assembly in the steering column has failed, and was causing these problems.please provide any additional information / documentation.
The airbag light stays on. The cruise control and horn does not work. *la
Air bag clockspring has shorted out on this vechicle, as reported to me by russ darrow (dearlership) i tried to contact chrysler about this problem they refused to take any information on it.to have a air bag componet fail on a three year old vechicle is both dangerous and ridiculous.
This clockspring assembly failed over a period of time, begining in about 2000 with the cruise control failure. This was followed by the airbag failure, as manifested by the airbag check lamp remaining on. Finally, the horn failed to work. I subsequently replaced the clockspring assembly this month, which repaired all the above problems. I have the defective clockspring, and am willing send it to you for analysis if you so desire.
Horn malfunctioned.consumer had the vehicle inspected after the air bag light flashed. Consumer was told that the clock spring needed to be replaced. This make, model and year was under a recall for the clock spring, but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.
I was driving and the whole dash panel went out, gas, speed , horn gauges
The horn on the van was intermittent from nearly the first use.we rarely use it an did not remember to inquire about it over a period of several years whenever we were at the dealership for service.finally, one time we asked about it and were told that we had a faulty sop module and that it was likely that the driver-side airbag wouldn't function.we wrote to daimler-chrysler and they responded that they wouldn't cover the replacement.seems ludicrous that a safety device on a new vehicle could be rendered useless and the manufacturer wouldn't step-up to replace it.
Early fall service engine soon light on. Dealer charged several hundred dollars to fix. Soon after air bag lite came on while driving but often went off or flickered. Believed it was loose wire or fuse, caused by dealer fixing previous problem. So did not believe it was urgent. However now cruise control does not work either. Became alarmed that problems were connected and air bag may not be functioning, and that this problem may be dangerous. Went to nhtsa site and was shocked to see recall notice posted for air bag lite/no cruise control clock spring problem. I am concerned because my vehicle has more than 70,000 miles on it but it was manufactured in 2/98, within the recall parameters please advise. I will be contacting my dealer as well. Thank you for your oversight of this problem.dt
Consumer states cruise control is inoperative due to a defective clockspring.
Two weeks ago i noticed my air bag light was staying on. We also found out that the horn and the cruise control stopped working. We have checked all the fuses and found out through the my car stats web site this same problem was part of a recall involving a clock spring problem. Since no dealer in my area will honor this recall it is still broken.
Abs light illuminated, and the horn stopped operating.dealer determined thatair bag clock spring had to be replaced.
Ea01-007; air bag lightilluminated ondashboard, also, cruise control was inoperable. Consumer has yet to contact dealer. Please provide any further details.
While driving at65 mphcruise control and horn stopped working, consumer not sure about airbag light. Dealer replaced clock spring assembly.
Cruise control failed to operate andair bag light would intermittently come on/off while driving.dealer was notified.dealer thinks pcm-engine controler going bad.*yd
Cruise control failed about 45 days ago.air bag light began coming on last week.air bag light goes on and off, but is on most of the time.
Clock spring failure caused inoperable horn and cruise control and air bag light to stay on. These problems prevented the vehicle to pass utah safety inspection
Airbag light has come on, horn stopped working and cruise control was inoperative. Dealer determined clock spring assembly needed to be replaced.
The brake system was defective, there were burn like smells, and noises, the clock spring was inoperative and caused other problems, and the squeaking serpentine belt had gone bad.scc
Clock spring problem: my 1998 grand voyager had the same symptoms and problems subject to the recall but the dealer and chrysler insist my vechicle not covered by recall.i explained that maybe the problem is more widespread than they admitted, as i can see from your site ,at least 109 others agree with me.
While traveling on the highway and without prior warningair baglight appeared on the dashboard.also, there was no horn.dealer was aware of the problem.
Horn doesn't work. Took vehicle to dealer, and had clockspring and airbag module replaced. But,problem still exists. Please add vin.
False deployment of air bag when running over a rock, resulting in hitting consumer in nose and chin, and damages to vehicle.
The contact owns 1998 plymouth grand voyager.the contact stated the air bag light was illuminated indicating that the air malfunctioned.the contact reviewed nhtsa campaign number 04v480000 (air bag) and notified the manufacturer.the manufacturer stated the vin was not a part of the recall.the contact was concerned that the air bag could deploy without a warning. The failure mileage was 176,000.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. While driving at various speeds, the horn failed to function and the air bag light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the clock spring failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 04v480000 (air bags). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Consumer states horn is inoperative due to a defective clockspring.
Consumer states air bag is inoperative due to a defective clockspring.
While driving 60 mph the vehicle was involved in a front end collision.the vehicles air bags did not deploy.*nlm
Chrysler designed the power distribution block cover to hold water and retain moisture.this causes the connections to corrode and fail leading to failure of critical, electrically-operated, safety systems including the airbag safety restraint system and the anti-lock braking system.chrysler has been aware of the error and redesigned the power distribution box.however, they did not recall and offer to replace the failed component.
The contact owned a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that the driver inserted the key into the ignition and turned it into the accessory position when the air bags deployed. The driver sustained injuries to the arms, chest and wrist. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that there was water intrusion, which could have caused the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and determined that it was not mechanical. The insurance company decided that the failure was mechanical, and classified the vehicle as being destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 63,800.
Faulty clockspring caused the air bag light to illuminate and the cruise control and horn to malfunction.recall# 04v480000/02v293000.the consumer was told that his vehicle was not included in the recall.the consumer requested reimbursement.(clockspring shorted to ground) *sc
While driving driver applied the brakes and pedal descended to the floor.this caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and hit a tree.both frontal air bags failed to deploy. Driver suffered neck and back injuries and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.the vehicle was totaled.
The air bag light illuminated after starting the vehicle. The horn and cruise control failed to work.recall#02v293000. Themechanic would not repair the vehicle free of charge, because the vehicle identification number was not included. Please provide more information.
The steering wheel clock spring failed, which caused my airbag, horn, and cruise control to become inoperative.this is a known problem and a recall has been issued.however, my vin number was not on the list to receive the free replacement.the dealer wants me to pay $300 to fix a known safety defect.
My airbag light stays on, the horn doesn't work and the cruise control doesn't work. This is a documented recall but daimler chrysler said that the recall is not on the year of my van.
The air bag light stayed on and the horn and cruise control did not work. This described the effects of a defective clock spring assembly.the clock spring assembly was replaced on 04/16/04 and was currently working fine. *sc
We own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. We had received a recall notice regarding the front air bag (clockspring assembly). This notice was for vehicles with 70,000 miles or less (free repair). Our vehicle has 75,000+ miles and yesterday our air bag light is staying on... I do not think that it is responsibile for diamler chrysler to set milage limits for repairs. We have a large family and us our van alot... Diamler chrysler should not be aloud to set milage limits. Because of this decision, i will not purchase another diamler chrysler product.thank you.
While starting up the vehicle srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.horn and the cruise control worked intermittently.consumer drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanicdeterminedthat clock spring needed to be replaceddue to a worn out part.
Air bag light remains illuminated while driving. Dealer was contacted.
While driving at 35 mph the air bag deployed inadvertently. In the process, consumer's vehiclerear ended another vehicle. Then, vehicle was towed to the dealer, who, in return, towed the vehicle back toconsumer'shomenot repaired. The damages sustained from the collision were not repaired because consumer only had liability insurance.
While driving air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic informed the driver that this vehicle was not on recall.
While driving consumer hit a patch of ice sending the vehicle over a bank. Upon impact, the air bags on driver's side did not deploy. Driver and passenger sustained injuries.
The van we purchased has integrated child car seats.the buckle flap is made of hard plastic.as we were waiting at a stoplight, my 2 year old sonshowed me a piece of the buckle that had broken off.it was about the size of a dime.he easily could have choked on it.i informed the dealership and was told that it was under warranty and they would replace the car seats.(the other buckle is beginning to break.i then called chrysler and told them about the choking hazard and they did not see it to be a problem.if this was a toy it would have been recalled.they are replacing the buckle with the same buckle part it had.the same problem will occur.i do not want any children, including my own to choke and die. Please help!
Harness clip on integrated child seat can easily be undone by the 3 year old child that occupies the seat. Also, consumer feels if a crash occurs pressure from impact may not be enough to secure the child.manufacturer was notified.when pulling on the straps, the clips come apart. This problem existed since the vehicle was purchased.
Separate email sent describing problem. No safety defect listed.
When placing the child insidethe car seat the handle broke, causing the childto fall out.

I have a 98 plymouth voyager, for the last couple of months i have had problems with this car, the dashboard keeps going out while i'm driving-i have punched the dashboard while i'm driving and sometimes that have made everything light back up, i have pulled over to the side of the road at night and almost got into a accident because of this problem; it even happens when the car is off, when this happens the car starts and than shuts right back off, than the car doesn't start at all, i have replaced the starter, ignition box, alternator and other things. My car is now stranded in a different neighborhood than mine. The other problem is the fanbelt keeps coming off, i have been driving with my kids in the car in the rain and it has falling off, another time it happened i was going over a train bridge down a hill with my kids in the car and i had to force the car into a near bye school parking lot. I have went to the dealership and they said they didn't know anything about a kit supplied by chrysler to help prevent this from happening and they said there was no recall on this problem, this is a very dangerous situation, please help me!
I see there is an investigation on dodge caravan and grand caravan, plymouth voyager and grand voyager and chrysler town and country and voyager minivans from the 2001 and 2002 model years. Owners have reported that the headlights are flickering, dimming and periodically shutting down while the vehicle is in motion. The problem has led to the minivans being towed in some cases. I would hope that you can add my year minivan.i have a 1998 plymouth grand voyager experiencing the same problems.i am not able to get it fixed because the mechanic can't figure out what is causing this.is there anything you can do to add my vehicleto this safety investigation???the headlights are flickering on and off, the dash lights do this at the same time.sometimes the headlights just stay on.
Driving down road and all of sudden my guages go out on instrument panel-speedometer,fuel,temp, etc.it goes out and comes on whenever it wants to-i do a lot of traveling and rely on mileage re-imbursement but i get none cause my odometer and tripometer go out also, sometimes to never come on for a week or two.
Headlights, interior and other lights, come on and go off automatically. This can happen when vehicle is running (lights flashing) and this happens even when engine and ignition is off. Eventually battery is completely drained. Mechanics are unable to properly diagnose problem. Some mechanics say it could be because of a faulty bcm, but not sure. Reading through edmunds.com and other blogs, this seems to be a common problem with many plymouth/dodge/chrysler mini van owners, with no real solution. Flashing lights when driving can distract other drivers on the road. A dead battery at any time and especially in the wrong place can cause all kinds of difficulties. Headlights going off during night driving can lead to accidents. Took the vehicle to a local mechanic who ran a diagnostic test and was unable to find root cause, but suggested could be faulty bcm (diagnostics cost $150). Took the vehicle to chrysler dealer who ran diagnostics and said could be because of an after market alarm. Recommended removing the alarm (cost $400 for diagnostics and removing alarm). Problem was not solved and now says caused by faulty bcm (which they say could have been caused by alarm), suggested replacing bcm. Cost of new bcm quoted is $700+ labor. Vehicle is currently inoperable (dead battery).is this is a common problem with plymouth/ dodge/chrysler minivan's?
I purchased vehicle used and found no problems with the vehicle with the exception of a squeaky serpentine belt. Put a little belt dressing on it and that was as far as the issue went. Then on a dark rainy night, went through a rain puddle-very slowly, and instantly, steering became very difficult. The worst part of this experience this night was trying to put belt back on pulleys, as you can imagine in the dark and no idea how to route it. Thank goodness there was a diagram in engine. With no knowledge that this was a very well known issue with these vehicles it was quite a surprise. After researching this online, and reading all of the consumer complaints i can't figure out what you people are waiting for!! fatal accidents!! there has been more than enough info submitted and documented to warrant a recall and have the manufacturer take care of this. Oh-but guess what? another company 'gates" has come up with a solution that apparently has had positive reviews. My order is in and i am awaiting my retrofitted tensioner belt component kit so that i will feel safe enough to be out on the roads and that i will not become a hazard to other drivers on the road with me. The federal government comes to the aid of a big company like chrysler (plymouth) even when it is more than obvious that they are building substandard cars. This is not a major repair, but it is certainly a problem that could very easily cause serious bodily injuries to many people from just one incident! it has now been fourteen years since this car was manufactured. How many years of complaints does it take to get someone to notice and take action? is there someone above you that we have to beg, please help us! the little guys. Why should we have to beg, "please don't let my car be the one that is going to kill someone."make the ones responsible-be responsible! thank you (i think).
One day, the air bag light stayed on, horn would not work, neither will the cruise control.bad clockspring on the steering wheel is the cause.found problem simply by searching on clockspring and this problem shows up pertaining to 1998 plymouth grand voyager.currently it is still broken.
My van is a lemon.all kinds of electrical problems - defogger sometimes work and sometimes not, windows won't roll down, stereo speakers sometimes works, instrument panel lights go off and on, dim yellow headlights, etc.found pin hole in head...defect in metal.van over heated and gauge did not say it was hot.fan went out.now something going wrong with front end.occasionally smell gas.the lifter head gasket now leaks oil.van sometimes jumps in park and rolls.i can not afford to fix this stuff...bail me out not chrysler....
Nothing on dash board works.
I was driving and the whole dash panel went out, gas, speed , horn gauges
Due to an electrical shortage within the system, the abs warning light reamains illuminated,as well as the air bag warning light. The door locks do not lock and other malfunctions occur.please give any further details.
Randomly a short circuit in the instrument cluster has developed in the 1998 plymouth grand voyager. When this occurs, the dash board remains illuminated but the gauges do not function(speed, rpm, gear, temp, etc) and the vehicle doses not communicate to the transmission and the vehicle does not shift into overdrive gear. The brakes and airbag will illuminate on dash. The computer codes and reads ecm failure. Twice taken to dealership don drennan hoover al.
When car is off, my front and back headlights constantly click on and off.i here a clicking sound in the fuse box.with the constant on and off, my battery dies.i am taking my vehicle to the shop today but was wondering is this an electrical problem.i often heard that the vehicles always usually has electrical problems.i never noted a recall or complaint before but would like a response to whether this problem is common.
The vehicle is experiencing a loss of power steering,a/c,and the electrical system.also, engine belt needs to be replaced. Dealer has replacedengine belt 3 times. The problem has happened 5 times.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager.while driving 60 mph on a major highway, the vehicle stalled multiple times.the fuel gauge failed to read properly and the instrument panel cluster malfunctioned.in addition, the power locks and windows failed to operate and the interior dome light failedthe vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was notified.the approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
At certain times the serpentine belt will slip off of the pulleys and quit powering the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump.this can be worsened by rainy conditions.changing belt tensioner works for a year or two.
Computer failing to send signal to fan relay.
While driving 30 mph or more the abs and the "check engine" lights illuminated simultaneously. The condition caused the instrument gauges and the power door locks to be inoperative. The vehicle has been to the dealer on three separate occasions. They replaced three difference sensors and a module and the problem keeps recurring.*sc
The dash panel dies and the abs light turns on followed by the check engine light due to the computer throwing a code. I have removed the dash panel three times and found the problem is at the female plug on the back of the panel, by using a wiggle test. The dealer wanted $250.00 for what they claimed only had on circuit panel when i knew better. It has two. I repaired it by using a strong zip tie to hold the plug up. This worked for years. Now it's the same old problem but it is no longer on and off depending on the temp.of the inside of the vehicle. It is 100% dead so now here i go again. Take the dash apart and try to get it to function. I use my gps for milage, speed, and fuel. That and a usb light made for a pc. I have delt with the faulty tenshioner and serpentine belt problem twice. Now it is all the relays from heat burnt out. It started with the starter relay and went south. Tail lights and so on.
Dashboard instrument panel keeps coming on and going off, abs light comes on then the instrument panel goes off. Speed is unknown, amount of gas is unknown, oil, etc. This is ridiculous in the fact that so many have been complaining about it and the company still hasn't recalled the vehicles to have this issue fixed. Yes i may have a 1998 plymouth voyager, but i don't feel that because of the incompetence that this company has that i should have to shell out money to have it figured out and repaired. I understand normal wear and tear but this is not normal (for other vehicles, obviously very normal for this one in general). The strangest thing is, if the vehicle is warmed up from the sun, the panel seems to work, the majority of the time, where i live it doesn't work, and i have to guesstimate everything. How is this safe?!?!
There is no particular event that triggers the following problems:the instrument cluster / controller is defective.the gauges fail constantly.the abs light stayson which i believe is related to the clock-spring recall, and the speedometer, odometer, tachometer, fuel gages stop working.i read an article in a forum that said disconnect the battery because it was a problem with the ecu.it seems resetting the ecu did fix the problem temporarily.so each time it happens that how i fix it.a recall for the defective ecu may be in order.i have read many articles with people with this same issue. (2) the leds for the a/c, heating and rear wipers don't work. They just blink.i have found that if you drive long enough, they start working usually non-stop driving for over an hour.
I own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager se.my gauges (gas, temp, rpm, and gear indicator) are all out.in reading online, this seems to be a problem with other people as well.i have to use a gps to be able to tell how fast i'm going.i've twice ran out of gas while going down the highway because i can't tell how much fuel i have remaining.
Electrical problems with my 1998 plymouth grand voyager.wipers will not turn off and all gauges died.no speedometer, no tachometer, no fuel gauge and no temp gauge.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that she smelled fuel coming from the vehicle. Also, the contact mentioned that the instrument panel failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump module assembly and instrument cluster assemblies needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 06e091000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 77,000.
My entire instrument panel suddenly quit working and my check engine light and abs light are always on. The wipers start on their own whenever they like and i have to manually time when i turn them off because the wipers will not return to the bottom on their own.
I have been told that the clock spring has been a high maintance item. This device controls the air bag, horn and cruse control. I consider this to be a safety issue and would like to find out if or has this been addressed by the manufacture or nhtsa . Thank you ed bradley.dt

Horn doesn't work. Took vehicle to dealer, and had clockspring and airbag module replaced. But,problem still exists. Please add vin.
While driving/parking the horn failed intermittently.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Abs light illuminated, and the horn stopped operating.dealer determined thatair bag clock spring had to be replaced.
I have contacted chrysler and they paid for the ignition and the manifold gasket replacement. They paid $1,000 of the transmission failure. The total bill for the transmission failure was $2500.
A service bulletin was issued from diamchrysler on june 2000 regarding the ignition locking. The ignitionlocks up.i would like to know why there weren'tny recalls regarding this manner.if so, when was it recalled. Unfortunately no longer am under warranty for this problem. I was never notified of the serviceletin when it was issued.
Had let vehicle idle a while before moving. Shifted into reverse & started to back out.engine stalled out. No prior warning. Took to dealer 1st time & had map sensor replaced. 2nd timethrottle sensor was replaced. 3rd timecontrol module.4th time mechanic took engine apart & foundwires under the hood had melted together & all the electrical wires needed replacing. This was due to the wires being too close to the exhaust system.
While driving on the highway vehicle would die out/stall without prior warning. Has happened 3 times in 2 weeks. Contacted dealership & was informed engine needed new spark plugs & wires, which were replaced. However, problem still exists. Contacted manufacturer & informed consumer to take vehicle back to dealership.
1998 plymouth grand voyager se.key would not turn in the ignition switch.this has happened several times in the past.on friday, 02 january 2009, we had driven the vehicle to a destination and then upon trying to get in and start it, the key would not turn in the ignition switch.we tried turning the steering wheel to release any pressure, wiggled the steering wheel, etc until finally, the steering wheel became locked.at that point, there was nothing that we could do with the vehicle.we were blocking the drive into a glass repair shop such that no other vehicles could be moved in or out of the business, not to mention the weather was very cold.we had to have a tow company come and release a linkage underneath the van in order to get it into neutral just to push it back out of the way.we had it towed to a dodge dealer in bloomington, indiana to have it looked at.the result was a faulty ignition cylinder.the dealer replaced it at a cost of nearly $300.after much research online, it appears that this is a wide spread problem across the entire chrysler product line.this fault puts a person at risk of being stranded.chrysler should answer for this, as this seems to be very widespread.
Dear sir:to who it may concern.i have a 1998 plymouth caravan van (they call it a truck) with a 3.3 liter engine.with about 54,000 miles on it .last week i made a short trip to lowes about 3 miles from home. When i returned home i parked in my driveway and went into my garage. After about 2 min i saw fire dripping from my engine, i got my fire ext. And used it under the car. Then i opened the hood and put out the rest of the fire.i then disconnected both battery terminals and called the wrecker to tow my car to the dealer for repair (autowest dodge in roseville auto mall--- roseville ca) .i followed the wrecker to autowest and told the dealer to repair my car.they called &the next day i picked up my car .they told me it was a short in my starter and they had put in a new starter and repaired the burned up wiring harness. My car seems to be working ok now.my extended warranty covered all but $50.00 . I am writing this report because what if---i had driven into the garage closed the door and went into the house ? it would have burned down the house or worse.i asked the dealer if they had any other cases of this and he said no. I do not trust auto dealers to tell the truth. So i will let you guys take it from here.
At 600 miles, instrument cluster failed, a/c not working, no reverse.dealer replaced instrument cluster, could not duplicate the no reverse condition, and replaced the a/c fuse.at 6,363 miles, transmission slipping and scraping noise when turning left in reverse.dealer could not duplicate.at 7,586 miles, no start condition on numerous occasions, after the dealer had the van for over a week, they finally duplicated the problem and and replaced the starter.at 36,141 miles the serpentine belt broke because of a defective tensioner pulley, dealer replaced the belt and tensioner, supposed goodwill, but we all know about the tsb, and all the other complaints.at 36,741 miles, leaking coolant, dealer replaced the rear head gasket, and did not even check the front head. (now who ever heard of replacing one head gasket on a v-6 motor, i guess chrysler must think they are superior).at 53,000 complete engine failure, 2 hours away from home, and now waiting to see what the cause is.according to the service manager the motor is knocking and there is a lot of metal in the oil.and i forgot to mention that this vehicle has not even fulfilled the lease term. Nlm
Failed starter. Replaced starter. Engine 3.3l. Mileage 88862.
Break pedal stop light switch. The wire harness moves every time you step on the pedal, thus making the wires break. When the wire breaks the stop lights don't work and could and almost lead to a few rear end crashes i had. Wires replaced and had pedal and harness to configure not to move when the break pedal pressed.
Consumer noticed liquid dripping on the garage floor and placed a rag under the vehicle, when backing out of the garage the rag attached to the axel and consumer noticed that he did not have brakes and was notified by passers-by that his car was on fire, comments from the adjuster is engine wiring harness damaged heavily and brake sensor wire burned up, no signs of a rag or anything (claim # 42-1330-502).*yd

Vehicle being driven normally at highway speed.detected fire coming from under vehicle.when stopped, engine still running and flames engulfed vehicle from under front portion just rear of engine compartment, quickly spreading to rear and interior.
Dt: contact statedwhen driving at 35-40 mph all panel lights went out,and there was not indication of speed. Currently, the panel lights no longer came back on . However the turn signal lights were still working. The contact did not knowthenumber of occurrences because therewere too many.updated 12/27/2005 -
I see there is an investigation on dodge caravan and grand caravan, plymouth voyager and grand voyager and chrysler town and country and voyager minivans from the 2001 and 2002 model years.
I own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. It has 168,900 miles on it. For the past 13 months, we have had numerous occasions when as we are driving, all gauges will suddenly stop functioning. This includes the speedometer. When our gauges go out, the airbag warning light comes on, indicating that system will not function properly in the event of an accident. Are other voyager owners experiencing a similar problem? *la
At certain times the serpentine belt will slip off of the pulleys and quit powering the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump.this can be worsened by rainy conditions.changing belt tensioner works for a year or two.
Driving to store. Weather was clear ~ 85 degrees f, road was clear, no rain, time approximately 10pm.while driving, i moved into the center lane (major road, three lanes both ways) for a turn to the store, during my turn to the left, i noticed that my power steering was not functioning and very hard to control/steer the vehicle.after struggling to straighten out my van (1998 plymouth, grand voyager se) i noticed that my engine temperature had gone off scale / over heating.at this point i stopped the van in the middle of traffic.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth voyager. The contact stated that the serpentine belt would detach whenever the vehicle was driven while raining.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there was nothing that could be done due to the design of the vehicle. The vin was not available. The failure mileage and current mileage was unknown.
Dt*:the contact stated at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning.the vehicle restarted and the dealership was unable to determine a problem.
We own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager with a 3.3 liter engine. On friday, october 1,2010, my wife drove slowly through a puddle and the serpentine belt came off causing a loss of power steering and other system powered by the serpentine belt. This has happened to her once before and from what i have read on the internet is a very common problem with these vehicles. My wife usually enjoys driving her van but now has lost all confidence in it. She states it's a veryscary situation, not to mention dangerous. With all i have read it is almost impossible to believe there has not been a recall to have this very dangerous situation corrected.
The serpentine belt comes off this vehicle, leading to a sudden loss of power steering.so far, this has happened while on the entrance ramp to a freeway, while driing in light city traffic, and while idling at a bank (prior to taking a highway trip which had to be cancelled).in all cases the driver was female and had great difficulty controlling the vehicle.in all cases this was during wet weather.after the second case, we had the deale install a guide plate that is supposed to keep the belt on, but it came off anyway.we have now learned that there appears to be a defect in the mounting bracket for the power steering pump, leading this part to bend under normal wear and tear such that the serpentine belt will jump off in wet weather.in our vehicle, there was another with the exact same problem in at the same time, and the replacement part was on backorder with 18 customers waiting.this clearly seems to be a design flaw as this vehicle is becoming notorious for this problem among mechanics, with several discussion theads to be found on the internet.it is only a matter of time before someone loses power steering at a critical time, thereby losing cotrol of the vehicle and leading to a fatal accident.indeed, i would be surprsied if this hasn't already ahppened.a recall must be issued for this problem.

The info i just provided was the most recent.i bought the van used with 22,000 miles and since then i have lost 6 serpentine belts and nobody will help me with the problem.i have spent over 1,000$ in the attempts to get the problem fixed and this last time i just did it myself is why the cost is so low.i have been told by two top mechanics in my area that the belt is not lined up right and there is no adjusting it.the problem is from the factory they tell me.nobody will help me though because it is not a recall. Maybe this will help the next guy.
I have a 1998 plymouth grand voyager with the 3.3l moter, every time the van goes through a puddle of water the drive belt comes off.the problem has been around for a long time, what has to be done is the belt tenser and pullys need to be changed to fix the problem.the dealership refuses to fix the problem.
Owner drove over a puddle and the splash knocked the serpentine belt off of the pulleys. Power steering was lost, engine began to overheat, and the minivan needed to be towed to service station to have the serpentine belt replaced.
Intake or head gasket leak allowed the crank case to fill with water and coolant.the engine immediately seized up and died.i was driving down a crowded interstate at the time, and lost all power, steering and brakes.the entire engine will have to be replaced.
On various occasions since the first week of ownership of the vehicle the speedometer and temperature guage have simultaneously dropped to zero and the fluctuated between 0 & 85 mph, dealer was contacted and they kept the van to investigate, nothing found, they then hooked up a computer reader that i drove with for 10 days, as sthis incident only happened sporadically and i had to hit a button when it did nothing was reported. When travelling at anywhere from 10 to 65mph it is sometimes quite dangerous to takes your eyes off the road and your hand off the steering wheel to hit the button of an attachment on your visor..! this incident had continued to occur over the past year and now in the middle of a hurricane i have attempted to evacuate my children from the area only to find that my vehicle will not start.the dealership sent somebody to assist and due to the weather conditions he told me to keep the car running all day as he did not feel that this was a battery problem but computer related, particularly after i told him about the strange happenings with the speedo etc. The van ran for about 3.5 hours on my driveway and then died...! the local chrysler dealership is coming to pick it up tomorrow morning.
Leaking head gasket which eventually blew. Replaced head gasket. Engine 3.3l. Mileage 66049. Informed by dealership not covered. Yet i have seen on this web site where it was covered.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that the serpentine belt would detach from the vehicle whenever it would rain. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the tension pulley needed replacing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 219,000.
1998 plymouth grand voyager with several recall issues. Consumer states that the vehicle has not been looked at for these problems with the gasoline delivery system, airbags, and fuel injection and would like to know what to do.the consumer stated the vehicle now has engine problems and is not running.
The evaporator has gone out,so no cold air - the mechanic said this happens often with my make and model vehicle and said i should complain.if you can ofer anyhelp or solutions i would apprecitate it. Thanks, d kossow
I was traveling at about 60 mph on interstate 85 north in atlanta, ga when i heard a loud bumping noise under the vehicle. I looked in the rear view miror and saw somthing rolling on the road.i lost power steering and the vehicle was very difficult to control.i managed to get to safe spot off the road and looking under the hood i discovered my water pump pulley was off and laying on the splash pan. The serpentine belt tensioner pulley had also fallen off and was what i had seen rolling in the road.i had the vehicle towed to a five star chrysler dealership in stone mountain, ga where the maintenance supervisor said it just wore out and he had seen them fall off in less mileage than mine had. I complained that it was a manufactures defect and should not have just sudenly fallen off with no warning. I was left with no choice but to have it repaired. They charged me just under $400.00 to replace the water pump and put a new tensioner pulley on it. Towing cost me $85.00 and a rental vehicle $79.00. The dealer maintenance supervisor even had the nerve to ask me if i wanted to get a 60000 mile check up while they were working on it. I told him no thanks the vehicle never made it to 60000 miles. I have not complained to chrysler because i felt i would get the same cold treatment that i got from the dealership in stone mountain where i was stranded over 100 miles away from home.i once thought chrysler made good quality vehicles but no more.
Threeweeks after purchasingtransmission/ transfer case was defective, and the bearing that held the fan belt together fell off. While driving consumer heard an explosion, then lost braking power and steering. Consumer coasted to the side.
Failed water pump. Replaced water pump and coolant. Engine 3.3l. Mileage 89525.
The service engine light comes on constantly in my 1998 plymouth voyager.this vechicle has broken down on me 6 times in the past 3 months and has cost me a fortune in repairs.each time, the problem is traced to the engine cooling system/fan relay.the fan relay part has been replaced 3 times, but the "service engine" light came on again within days of the repair and the engine overheated each time.the 5th time this happened, the car was towed to the dealer.they said the problem this time was the fan relay "connector" and they replaced this part which i had to pay for in full.today, 20 days after this latest repair, the "service engine" light is back on and the fan is again, not running, causing the engine to overheat.i am now arranging to have the vechicle towed to the dealer again.these breakdowns have cost me over 2 weeks of work and resulted in my children being stranded at their schools.the repairs are costing me a fortune and the problem persists.
Fan relay recall.
Fan relay failed to start radiator fans, car over heated stranding wife and 3 kids(ages 7,4 and 7 months old ),took to shop and they said #771 recall on that relay, contacted dealer said no recall on my specific van, even though problem exists in other vans, said will not fix their problem until enough people complain and make them.
Rear head gasket leaks coolant to rear of engine.from what i've now read, this was an unwritten recall, which chrysler would fix if brought in before ~75--80k miles.mine developed this leak before that, but i didn't find out about it until the vehicle had 105k on it.
The engine caught on fire.
Anti- frreeze was leaking onground. Consumer assumedhead gasket cracked orgasket blew. Dealer was notified.
Antifreeze was found under the car, an intial diagnosis was a blown head gasket.
Oil pump failed, engine froze up and needs to be replaced.chrysler refuses to hear any complaint as the van has 44,100 miles on it and the warranty on this 5 year leased vehicle was 36,000 miles.
Broken front rocker shaft. Replaced bent push rods, broken rocker shaft, drained cylinder heads of gasoline. Mechanic had seen this before. Engine 3.3 l. Mileage 97726.
Consumer was drivingvehiclein water 18 inches deep onwet pavement, then vehicle would not start, towed to dealer. Dealer indicated that engine locked up. Consumer maintained that it was poor engine design since water is sucked up into engine which causes this problem.
Oil is leaking from underneath the vehicle.
In november 1999 had transmission replaced. Currently, transmission needs to be replaced again. In december 2000, headgasket blewout.
On chrysler vans, rod consistently breaks on cylinder #1 because the bolt is too short.only happens on cylinder #1, even though the exact same head, on the other side of the engine (which would be cylinder #6) does not break like #1 does consistently.
While driving 70 mph the driver heard a loud crunching noise from the front end. The driver pulled over and proceeded to put the vehicle into park, however the vehicle began to roll backwards so she applied the emergency brake. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where she learned the engine and transmission needed to be replaced. Please provide additional information.
Broken rear rocker shaft. Dealership started and ran engine despite owner's warning. Further damage occurred. Replaced cylinder head, rocker shaft, gaskets, valve, hoses, etc. Engine 3.3l. Mileage 101552.
Leaking anti-freeze.found blown head gasket.

The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. While driving approximately 30 mph, the steering failed without warning and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact had to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road. When the hood was opened, the contact discovered that the driving belt was out of the pulley. The belt was placed back into position. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
The vehicle is experiencing a loss of power steering,a/c,and the electrical system.also, engine belt needs to be replaced. Dealer has replacedengine belt 3 times. The problem has happened 5 times.
While driving in rainy conditions the serpentine belt came off, disabling the power system, which may cause an accident.happened 4 times. .dealer cannot determine problem.please provide further information.
Dealership and independent shop replaced the serpentine beltseven times in the past year.mechanic indicatedto the consumer these were defective parts. Consumer foundthere was a technical service bulletin on this issue.
Defective idler arm pulley alignment on 1998 plymoth grand voyager.i have had the idler arm replaced and pulley replaced and belt replaced 4 times since i have owned the car and the car makes a terrible squeaking noise. The belt has come off two times. I have many friends with similiar voyagers with the same problem.
The brake system was defective, there were burn like smells, and noises, the clock spring was inoperative and caused other problems, and the squeaking serpentine belt had gone bad.scc
The self tensioner failed to work properly. Had taken to dealer & informed that the surpentine belt came off the pulley. The engine motor system stopped working.

We purchased our grand voyager with about 14,000 miles on it.it now has about 67,000 miles on it and we have been through approximately 6 serpentine belts and 4 belt tensioners.we have been through 1 belt per year at least since we bought the vehicle.the dealership never acknowledged that there was a defect in the engine that kept causing the belt to become mis-aligned, start squeaking, and eventually rip apart. The problem is more severe in hot weather and we have about 5 months of 90 degree weather where we are.our own mechanic has started shimming the belt tensioner, which seems to prolong belt replacement time but does not solve the problem.he believes the problem is that the hole that was drilled to install the tensioner and/or pulley is drilled at the wrong angle or not lined up correctly. Our only consolation is that the squeaking gives us warning about the state of the belt.*nlm
This is the second time this has happened. The first time was 2 months after purchase. An exceptional amount of rain had fallen and many roads had standing water on them. While negotiating one spot (approx. 6-12 in) all power steering ability was lost. Assuming the belt was wet continued to drive until warning light and signal showed overheating. Discovered that serpentine belt had fallen off. Dealer replaced and informed that incident had been reported to plymouth. Today same problem. Attempting to negotiate several instances of water, less than 25mph and suddenyl, no power steering. Personally reported to plymouth and was informed that they had not heard any instances of this failure. Questioned dealer and was informed that they had seen it happen several times. Initial problem: tension pully has no edge to hold belt on if water gets between pulley and belt. Pulley is also smooth which causes belt to slip. Result: loss of power steering, loss of charging to battery, loss of power to drive headlights/wipers/air conditioning. Dangerous result: loss of control/visibility. Solution(?): replace smooth pulley with one that has edges and put grooves of some sort on the pulley to allow water to be sheeted off if it comes between the pulley and the belt.
Consumer states that if driving in the rain and vehicle hits a water puddle, water splashes onto the serpentine belt and it comes off.as a result, vehicle loses power steering.consumer very concerned that if turning and problem occurs driver will not be able to turn vehicle and possibly crash.dlr also advised consumer that mfr is aware of problem.nlm
We own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager se, for the past year we have had continual problems with the serpentine belt coming off and have replaced it so many time it impossible to count that high.t belt is especially subject to come off when it rains or there is water on the road.i know for a fact that many complaints have been filed regarding this issue and yet chrysler will not fix the problem.this is a very serious safety issue as when the belt comes off the vehicle lose the power steering, brakes & electrical system.you people are suppose to make the road ways safe and our tax dollars bailed chrysler out when they were going under.theirs no telling how many people have to die due to the negligence of chrysler and this design flaw and the nhtsa compliance in this matter.http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_30931_6.htmlthe above link will document the same problem that other chrysler mini-van owners have encountered.
In september of 2000 we replaced the belt tensioner.the car had about 33000 miles on it.in january or so we had to replace a valve cover gasket because oil was leaking and we were losing oil.the van had 39000 miles on it.the manufacturer was contacted and would not accomodate us even though the dealership said there was only one cause of the problem at that milage - manufacturer's defect.then we just foundout this week at 48000 miles that we need a valve and ring job because the car was burning oil.we had been burning oil since before the valve cover gasket.we've been told by the dealership (not the one we purchased the car from, which was a small independent company)and the manufacturer that the repair will not be covered because we didn't complain of burning oil before.(of course, the oil was being lost prior to the valve cover gasket problem but they said we weren't specific about burning oil.we had attributed the lost oil to the leak.
Our 1998 plymouth voyager has an exhaust leak in the crossover pipe.our nine year old daughter continually gets headaches in the car, and unbeknownst to us, there is carbon monoxide leaking into the van.it is not repairable, and the parts are on a "nationwide backorder" according to chrysler and they do not know when they will be available.in the meantime, we are not willing to subject our child to this, and believe we are being forced into purchasing a different vehicle, when we are not ready to do so, with another daughter in college.we believe that chrysler should be held accountable for this.
I have contacted chrysler and they paid for the ignition and the manifold gasket replacement. They paid $1,000 of the transmission failure. The total bill for the transmission failure was $2500.
The vehicle is experiencing a loss of power steering,a/c,and the electrical system.also, engine belt needs to be replaced. Dealer has replacedengine belt 3 times. The problem has happened 5 times.
The a/c compressor bearings failed. The vehicle was bought new and has only 54000 miles on it. I have had several vehicle with over 150,000 miles that did not have a comprssor failure. My mother has a 23 year old car with 250,000+ miles and has not had a a/c problem. I don't know if this qualifies as a defect, but most friends i have spoken with have not had this type of problem with so few miles on their car. The total cost to fix the compressor was $650 +/-.the warrenty on the van was 3 years/36,000 miles, even though this is past the warrenty it still seems that this type of failure should not occur at this early stage in the vans "life".
Failure of a/c compressor, bearings seized causing belt to burn.second a/c unit to fail this way on this vehicle.first failed in june 2001at 81,500 mi. Dealer says an oil leak from the evaporator led to loss of lubrication in the 17-month-old replacement compressor. Recommends replacement of both parts.warranties past manufacturer unhelpful.dt
Dt*:the contact stated while driving at night the headlight illumination was too dim.the vehicle was driven to the dealer who cleaned and buffed out the lenses.updated 1/19/2007 -

The headlights lens developed a yellowish color appearance.this decreased the lights illumination and resulted in poor visibility.the dealership was unable to replace the lens due to the part being on back order.also, the dealer indicated that replacing the lens was not going to solve the problem.the problem would recur because of the plastic being used.*scc
Headlight lens covers.the lens covers seem to fade and pitt causing poor visibility when using head lights.i have noticed this on a lot of plymouth vans with the same headlight lens.

There is a strong gasoline odorcoming from inside of vehicle.whenvehicle is turned onodoris outside, aswell as inside of vehicle. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
Consumer is investigatingdefect on this vehicle.it appeared the fire came on infuel pump.therewere other chrysler minivans which had the same problem.please provide further information.
A fire broke out underneath vehicle while traveling at approx. 20 mph to school. Fire appeared to have been caused by aa fuel leakeage ontothe exhaust manifold. Dealer notifed, and seeking additional information from nhtsa.
Sometime the smell of gasoline in the vehicle is so strong, everyone must get out.
My wife and three children left the house in our 1998 plymouth grand voyager minivan at approximately 8:05am on wednesday, september 1, 1999 to travel to school.after traveling approximately 1 and 1/2 miles, they began to smell gasoline. After traveling another 1/2 mile, motorists behind the van began honking.one of our sons looked and saw flames out of the back of the van.my wife pulled the van to the side of the road, turned off the ignition, and removed the keys.everyone quickly go out of the van through the front doors and the right side sliding door.at this point, flames were coming our from underneath the van in the rear and on both sides.a trail of flames on the road was still burning where the van had traveled.bystanders called the fire department.the flames eventually completely engulfed the van before the fire department could arrive and extinguish the fire.no gasoline was found in the garage where the vehicle was parked the night before.no objects were run over on the way to school.a fire department report is available.
Fire originated from engine area. We were pulled over by another driver who saw flames under the mini-van. As i (driver) exited auto, i was hit by explosive flames that originated from engine exiting behind the left front tire. Flames also emitted from passenger front (rt) side.driver and front passenger received 2nd and 1st degree burns. Auto was engulfed in flames within 5 minutes. Total loss. Insurance company investigated - preliminary conclusion fuel leakage.
"o" rings replaced in 1998, 1 week later still leaking.as a result, entire fuel fuel tank was replaced under warranty. December 2000, "o" rings leaked again, repaired at consumers expense. Same problem as in recall 00v268000, but this vehicle was not included due to vin.
Consumer contacted dealer in 11/02 for recall remedy 02v268000.dealerhad to order parts and would contactconsumer to schedule an appointment.mr. Dam contacted dealer several times within the last 6 months, and was constantly being advised that parts have not arrived.since first contact with dealer, mr. Dam has received 2 additional reminder letters from manufacturer regarding recall.
I have smelled gas smell about a year after i got it when i would start it. They replace a leaking fuel injector in 2001 and another in 2002.when i called they told me they knew about the problem but i would have to pay for the repairs. This makes no sense because they admit they have a problem with them leaking gas. This seems dangerous to me. We were not notified about this problem yet they know about it. Why are people not being told.

The door locks failed twice, due to a faulty actuator.
Ok i didn't know how else to put this but to say that when raining this van and the funny part is that when driving during weather conditions (i.e. Rain snow) the micro v belt slips off and makes the van hard to drive and may in time if not already cause and accident the first time it happened to us we went though a small puddle of water on an on ramp from one free way to another and the van became unstable and hard to steer we had a 11 and a 2 year old in this van and now it doesn't matter when we drive in the rainit happens i have been told that there is a fix but the kit is over 200 dollars and is next to impossible for people to fix this on fixed incomes to this day we still deal with it but something should be done about it with chrysler and after doing a search on just google alone i found 1500-5000 different compliance on this one problem.
Bought van june of 1998 with a 3 yaer warranty/36,000 miles. Feburary of 2001, transmission goes out. A problem with the pin. 12 month warranty on reman transmission. Feburary of 2002, on exact same day as last year, transmission goes out again. Dealer tries to get out of the warranty--called customer service--should be a three year warranty. Again, problem with the pin. Another reman transmission put in. April of 2003, transmission acting funny and jumping speeds when slowing. Problem with torque.another reman installed. April of 2003, the next week, transmission making fluttering noises at different speeds. Torque problem again. Another reman transmission.
The pin (about 1" dia) in the transaxle broke, travelling at about 60mph, and locked up the front wheels of the vehicle. The lockup occured because the pin exited through the housing of the transaxle and lodged itself in between the bell housing and torque converter. The transaxle had three different holes smashed in its side from the failure. I have pictures of the damage which i can email. I was told by the garage that replaced the transaxle that this is a common failure on the plymouth voyagers although normally the failure doesn't occur until the 90,000+ mark. This failure could have created a serious accident since the front wheels suddenly locked up.
The power window on the drivers side just became sluggish and finally went down and wouldn't come back up, a bracket was broken, the entire assembly had to be replaced.the transmission would not go into gear during very cold weather and it was not a consistent problem to begin with.when you put the car in drive the engine would rev but it would not move forward.then finally after warming up a few minutes it would lurch forward and be fine.finally this past week it began making a grinding noise in reverse and refused to go in reverse.the car was put into drive and the grinding noise continued.just fyi when i contacted chrysler corporation about this problem, because i think a car should be able to make it to at least 100,000 miles before you start experiencing major problems, the customer assistance rep told me that i was unrealistic to expect my car to make it 100,000 miles.i find this amusing since this is the first car that i have owned that has had any major problems before 100,000 miles.my transmission mechanic also told me that he can only guarantee my repairs for 90 days because there are so many problems with the transmissions in these vehicles.
Consumer heard a loud bang almost like hitting a bump.after parkingvehicle there was a puddle of transmission fluid on ground.vehicle would start up, but wouldn't drive. Chrysler wouldn't covercost.customer service agent was very rude.
1998 plymouth grand voyager transmission implosion.while driving at highway speed some gears from the 4 speed automatic transmission punched out of the housing causing complete transmission failure and loss of power. Pushed vehicle to side of highway, but was left stranded in middle of night with small children and full term pregnant wife.although chrysler was aware of this common problem they would not repair it as ~10000 miles out of warranty - $3000 replacement out of pocket cost.second transmission failed ~38000 miles later, 2000 miles out of warranty and chrysler refused again - $2100 rebuild cost.besides the massive cost, total mechanical failure is very dangerous in highway traffic and if it leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager.the contact stated that the transmission failed after the vehicle was purchased.the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the transmission had to be rebuilt.the vehicle was repaired.approximately a month later, the transmission began failing again.the vehicle was driven to the local repair shop on three different occasions and the mechanic stated each time that the transmission failed due to the speed sensor.the vehicle was repaired after each visit.the manufacturer was not notified.the current mileage was 170,000 and the failure mileage was unavailable.
While driving, vehicle stalled without warning. Could not restart vehicle. Took to dealer and dealer indicated transmission case was cracked and pieces inside were broke.nlm
Transmission can be engaged when the vehicle is on/off or when brakes are applied.dealer has been contacted. Ak
The vehicle was put into gear without the brake being applied. *nlm
When backing out of driveway on a hill, it is difficult to put it into drive from reverse, causing the vehicle to roll backwards before it actually engages the drive gear.dealer claims this is not a defect. Also, anti-lock brake failure reported previously.
Transmission made a very loud bang and began leaking transmission fluid, consumer was informed that there was a quarter size hole in the transmission case which caused the leak, the transmission would need replaced, upon removal of the torque converter a hole approximately 7- 8 inches long by 6 inches wide was found in the case wall between the transfer case and the bell housing, the mechanic pointed out that a permanent retaining pin which held a larger pin in place had sheared off and sent the larger one through the case wall, this pin is not designed to be serviced and there was no way to adjust or even diagnose the problem prior to its failure, consumer states that this is a design flaw and is furious that chrysler will not provide him any assistance.
Transmission failure
I have contacted chrysler and they paid for the ignition and the manifold gasket replacement. They paid $1,000 of the transmission failure. The total bill for the transmission failure was $2500.

A pin broke insidedifferential wall andgearing mechanism.in doing so,transmission locked up, and wouldn't move. Dealership was aware of problem.transmission was replaced.
Noise from underneath van sounding as if parts were falling off or like metal in a blender. Once i stopped and looked under a steady stream of transmission fluid was pouring out. Had transmission shop confirm today that a "pin" broke and caused complete destruction to transmission and case. Nothing can be reused. Need an entire new transmission. Called dealership where purchased and they advised to call 800# in manual. Called 800# and was told there was nothing on file of this problem and this is our responsibility since it is no longer under warranty. I informed her that there is only 48,000 miles on van and this is unacceptable. Again she advised it was our responsibility.

May 29, 2004on a state highway and traveling at 55 mph when we felt a "thump" under our van. Upon pulling over, saw an oil slick left on road from vehicle. Transmission had a hole punched through from inside. Both chrysler dealer and transmission supply said they see many like it every month, where a set pin lets go and a small shaft slips over far enough to contact transmission case and destroys it. Vehicle had 49564 miles on it at the time. Transmission replaced at a cost of $2004.29. I have old case at home.
Transmission slippage.

While driving the transmission "fell apart" without warning and caused loss of front wheel drive.a broken transmission pin caused this problem.*nlmthe technicians said that this is design flaw and chrysler was aware.scc
My 1998 plymouth grand voyager went through several quarts of transmission fluid in the past winter.when i took it to my mechanic he said he had worked on several other vehicles of the same model.he warned that the transmission could go out any time and that it is a manufacturer's defect.a pin is coming loose in the transmission.as there was never a puddle under my vehicle it took the van failing to engage into p r d n 1 2 to notice the problem.the fluid was spraying out as i was driving.

Transmission fluid leak was noticed and vehicle was taken in for investigation to the charlie zook dealership located in sioux city, ia.after their investigation they stated there was a crack in the transmisison casing causing the leak.they stated would not be able to determine what caused the crack until they were able to drop the transmission and ivestigate further.the dealer did state they contacted chrysler and since the vehicle was no longer under warrenty, but was so close to it, they would do complete repair for a deductable of 250.00.after the dealer dropped the transmission they stated that the transmision had extensive damage and needed a complete replacement.they asked if we had heard a bang while driving, as a piece had broke causing the crack in the casing.they stated that was only a matter of time till complete transmission failure due to the damaged that had been caused by the first part failure.
I was slowing vehicle as i approached a stop sign. At about 20m.p.h. I heard a very loud "bang". I pulled to the shoulder of the road and observed transmission fluid leaking onto the ground. Vehicle was towed to dealership where it was purchased and a loaner was provided. Mechanic discovered quater-sized hole in transmission caused by unknown part being propelled through case. Chrysler refuses to cooperate with me or dealer. This is obviously a manufacture flaw which could have resulted in injury to myself, family or other driver if location or speed were different.
The lever to shift gear sticks.yh
Threeweeks after purchasingtransmission/ transfer case was defective, and the bearing that held the fan belt together fell off. While driving consumer heard an explosion, then lost braking power and steering. Consumer coasted to the side.
Vehicle rolled backwards downconsumer'sdriveway whilevehicle was in park , no emergency brake in use. I recently purchased a plymouth voyager. After a report last night on houston's khwb39 news, i was very concerned to note, the vehicle is fitted with a "generation 3" seat belt system. Visiting the website "www.unsafebelts.com", i seethis belt/latch design has been shown to fail on numerous occasions. Specifically, i read that a chrysler engineer testified that chrysler was aware of four or five crash tests where generation 3 buckles accidentally unlatched. This concerns me greatly. We have a young daughter who travels in a child seat, and this is a specific concern based on reports of these seats causing the buckle to unlatch. I cannot understand why, when the manufacturer is aware of the problem, that nothing has been done. I acceptthis will have serious financial impact on them, but they have an obligation to provide functioning safety equipment in their vehicles.
Consumer complained about seat belt system.dealer indicated nothing they could doabout it since vehicle had too many miles and no warranty.
While child was in rear seatbelt, it came loose when driving and making left turn.this occurred on three (3) separate occasions.
Will these gen 3 seatbelts be recalled and if not why not.
A black/ stickysubstancewas leaking out of both rear shoulder seat belt harness. As a result the seat belt did not operate correctly.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact's vehicle was crashed into from the rear. The front driver and passenger side seats fractured, throwing the driver and passenger into the dash board. The seat then moved backward independently. The air bags did not deploy. The driver and passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The driver sustained neck, shoulder, back, hip and knee injuries.the passenger sustained injuries to the neck, shoulder, back, hip and a bruised hernia. The police reported to the scene and a report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed.the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Multiple collisions,non-family member driving car.driver had an epileptic seizure and blacked out.apparently accelerated the mini van and rear endeda dodge ram pickup truck twice, and then ran into a telephone pole.both air bags deployed.driver wakened from accident.the right front passenger's seat, however, was up against the dashboard after the accident.chrysler sent out an engineer to look at seat.it was pinned against the dashboard and will not move.our concern is obvious.what would have happened in an accident with a passenger in the seat?pictures are available via e-mail if requested.car was considered "totalled"by the insurance company.car is located atpulera alrikas collision centerkenosha, wi 53144.
While driving, the consumer was directed onto another lane of traffic. A vehicle hit the consumer from behind without warning.the passenger's sidefront seat collapsed forward and the driverand passenger side air bags deployed.the consumer sustained neck and back injuries and was transported by ambulance to the hospital. The vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company.please fill in additional information.
Ypulera alrikas collision center was returning vehicle to consumer when they hit something that pushed in the front end of vehicle. When consumer saw vehicle the passenger's front seat was only 4" away from the dash.also, consumer cannot open glove box due to impact. The front seat sliding mechanism released the seat.
Brake line to rear brakes above fuel tank ruptured and lost all brake fluid
Brake lines rust out and brakes fail.
Applied brakes on steep driveway and pedal suddenly went tothe floor.experienced greatly reduced braking capability.found steel brake line failed due to corrosion (rust through) where it connects to braided steel section just aft of the abs proportioning unit. Plan on having it repaired next week.1998 plymouth grand voyager.
Brakes were applied on the vehicle and the vehicle did not hold and stop the car, speed was approximately 10mph resulting in afrontal impact.no injuries. Vehicle was towed to dealer. Consumer requested a manufacturer's investigation, no recalls included.
When backing out of driveway on a hill, it is difficult to put it into drive from reverse, causing the vehicle to roll backwards before it actually engages the drive gear.dealer claims this is not a defect. Also, anti-lock brake failure reported previously.
We have a 98 plymouth grand voyager we have owned it 5-6 years. For about the last 2 years sometimes the brake pedal pulls down on its own and sticksfor a few moments.it will do this when your foot is on the pedal and not pressing down at all, but it also does it when your foot is not over the pedal at all!i could be going 45 mph and it will pull down on its own and come back up in a few seconds. It is an very occasional problem so we never know when it will happen, unfortunately it has not done it while at the mechanics. We have had it looked at several times and worked on 3 times and they can't find the problem.i am very concerned this could be dangerous but we can't seem to find the problem.

No damage was done; dealer inspected the vehicle and informed nothing could be found. Can nhta help in ths matter or provide additional information.
Consumer was driving approximately 10 mph in traffic turned curve down decline, red light at approximately 300 ft. Away, when consumer applied brakes and brakes did not move as ifwas stuck in place. Vehicle was involved in a crash.
Brake pedal went to the floor causing vehicle to crash into another vehicle no damage was done. Dealer notified and informed consumer that nothing could be found. Can nhtsa help or provide details in this matter.
While driving driver applied the brakes and pedal descended to the floor.this caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and hit a tree.both frontal air bags failed to deploy. Driver suffered neck and back injuries and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.the vehicle was totaled.

Abs pump in the brake system needs replacing at a cost of $967.00!my 1998 plymouth voyger van has less than 40,000 miles and has not been abused or wrecked.quote was give by christopher dodge, golden colorado.
To start vehicle consumer had to put foot on brake, and pedal went down to the floor.tried to drive vehicle down the street, and didn't have any brakes. Also, vehicle had heavy smoke and vibration from brakes.
Have had to replace brake discs four times in 2003. Brakes will smoke immediately after replacements while going down hill. I recently had the entire brake system replaced and still notice smoke and squeaking coming from the brakes. I feel that there is something very wrong with this. I have not found any recall on the matter...only other related complaints.
The brake system was defective, there were burn like smells, and noises, the clock spring was inoperative and caused other problems, and the squeaking serpentine belt had gone bad.scc
Brakes were constantly wearing out excessively every 3,000 miles.pads were replaced and rotors were turned bymechanic at dealer.

My local automotive repair shop told me i had brake fluid leakage on my rear brakes; i took the vehicle back to the dealership and sure enough they replaced the the wheel cylinders in the rear. The van had only 11,000 miles. It was by chance this was caught, i was having the tires balanced and rotated.
Brake line to rear wheels corroded through.brake pedal went to floor.
While slowing, brake pedal seemed to give-out, it went to floor and vibrated.the dealer said nothing was wrong
Brake master cylinder failed causing loss of control, vehicle ran into ditch/brick wall trying to avoid collision with other vehicles. Mjs
Avoided accident by using emergency brake at three way stop
Avoided accident at three way stop by using emergency brake.
While driving in 4 inches or more of water the power steering intermittently fails. The belt can be heard slipping and then re-engages. The local dealership tightened the belt once but after the most recent incident they state nothing else can be done except for the dirver to "go slower". Also, rear brakes do the same.
At certain times the serpentine belt will slip off of the pulleys and quit powering the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump.this can be worsened by rainy conditions.changing belt tensioner works for a year or two.
Upon acceleration on small incline or decline, the entire column and steering wheel has a sharp shudder vibration, this was noticed on initial test drive and was told that this was normal(owner never driven a van prior) - it has continued to get worse.
Steering wheel locked up while making a turn.dealer has inspected, and will repair vehicle. Please provide information.
The vehicle is experiencing a loss of power steering,a/c,and the electrical system.also, engine belt needs to be replaced. Dealer has replacedengine belt 3 times. The problem has happened 5 times.
When vehicle goes through puddles of water slowly loses all power steering. Contacted deaaler, and dealer stated it was going to use a different type of belt.
While driving in 4 inches or more of water the power steering intermittently fails. The belt can be heard slipping and then re-engages. The local dealership tightened the belt once but after the most recent incident they state nothing else can be done except for the dirver to "go slower". Also, rear brakes do the same.

When a left turn was made, the steering wheel locked up.consumer had to jerk to the right to break loose then the turn signals would not cancel.broken multifunction switch replaced.air conditioner inoperative.dealer replaced leaking evaporator.fascias and rear sliding door damaged, dirty.
Strut towers rusting out. Noticed this condition approx. 2 years ago when vehicle was less than 5 years old. Researching the problem, it seems many other plymouth voyager and dodge caravan owners have the same problem. Found tsb#23-044-02 which refers to this problem. Sudden failure of the strut tower could result in loss of steering and/or sudden stopping force applied on one side of vehicle as a tire impacts a wheel well.
>> chrysler did repair the strut at no cost and rented us a handicap van while ours was being fixed.at first (6 times) we were told we were out of warranty, end of story.so our handicap van was worthless.once i uncovered a bulletin acknowledging the problem chrysler's tune changed. Make : plymouth model : voyager year : 1997 service bulletin num : 2304402 date of bulletin: oct 14, 2002>nhtsa item number: 10000317>component: structure:body they had already made parts to fix this problem.it is ridiculous i had to go to the extent i did to solve this problem. We were told that if the strut goes all steering is lost.so the public is at risk but that is acceptable to chrysler.instead of notifying all >> owners of the potential problem (about $300 to fix) chrysler feels peoples lives>> are not worth the trouble.if there are any accidents caused by this >> strut>> failure , just document something could have done to prevent it.>>>> please forward this email to any agency that maintains a database of>> accidents.>>
Took car for pa state inspection and failed due to tech would not load car on lift. Left front strut tower is rusted through.he was afraid that the lift would push the strut through the hood of the car.
The cup holder drawer was pulled out & there were coins in the coin tray.while the van was parked in a mall parking lot, the sun shone through the window and reflected off the row of nickels toward the ceiling.there was so much heat generated that the reflection acted like a magnifying glass and burned the ceiling console as well as burned a hole in the ceiling cloth.there are no warnings about the risk of this happening.for that matter we have had the van almost one year and have hardly kept the drawer shut.i would like to know if the chrysler/plymouth corporation will cover the repairs under the warranty.
While closing the liftgate, the screws on the passenger side came out and the liftgate smashed the consumer's hand.consumer's right hand sustained a contusion and nerve damage. The cause of the failure is yet to be determined.
Opened the rear hatch on the vehicle, let go, and the hydraulic strut failed -- instead of opening fully, the hatch slammed shut.it turns out that the bolt holding the right strut on sheared off.apparently, the other strut was no longer working, and the stress of the weight of the hatch on the right strut caused the bolt to fail.fortunately. No one was under the hatch or was injured.replaced both struts.i am reporting this because of the failure of the bolt -- there was no warning that the rear hatch would slam shut, as it appeared to operating perfectly until the failure.it could have caused a serious injury, especially to children.
(1) improper routing of rain/snow water results in premature and unsafe rusting of strut tower.(2) rusting of strut tower leads to strut failing through the rusted metal of the strut tower which result in loss of vehicle control.(3) upon next strut change, body shop metal repair will be necessary.
I own twochrysler minivan that have rusted strut towers, and i took them to myfavorite body shop. I have been told that almost every chrysler mini van has had this, and to go to the dealer due to a recall. There is no such recall, and was told by the dealer it has been a issue.
Potential structural failure due to severe corrosion on strut towers - especially driver's side.we cut out and replaced the strut tower before it failed completely.passenger side strut tower will need to be replaced soon.chrysler notified, but will not help with the problem.
Found the driver side strut tower is completely rusted out.discovered online hundreds of complaints of same on the same vehicle and date range.plymouth chrysler know about this and describes it as cosmetic but this is a structural problem.
My mechanic commented there was a serious problem with my two front strut towers. They had severe corrosion and the struts were pushing through the top of the tower. He was concerned when the strutspushed through i would have difficulty controlling my vehicle.i took the vehicle to my plymouth dealer on august 10th 2004 (98,402 miles just over 6 years old). Chrysler refused to do anything about the problem.the corrosion is so severe that the metal is perforated and starting to tear. I work for a company that sells anti-corrosion coating (called electrocoat) and know that this problem must have been going on for years. If not hidden under the hood i would have noticed it long before the warranty was up. Had the part design been proper and the electrocoating done correctly this defect should not occur before 10 years.this is not an uncommon problem with my model. Chrysler issued a tsb number 23-044-02ackowledging this problem for vans built from 1996-2000 and has a repair kit and procedure.if the problem is identified within the warranty period the tsb states it is reimbursable.iposted my problem on a message board and quickly recieved a reply form another owner with the same problemi have digital photos which i can sendto you. I will save the defective towers which need to be cut from the body and replaced. The repair will cost $1350 and will be done in two weeks.the defect is difficult to see and many people may be driving with a compromised suspension and dangerous condition without knowing it.chrysler seems unwilling to face up to thier responsibility in this matter and will likely do nothing unless your office does something to force them to address the issue or a disaster occurs because if it.please look into this situation. If my van or the old towers can serve any useful purpose in your investigation let me know.

The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager.the contact noticed severe corrosion and rust on the front struts.the failure has caused the front two tires to abnormally move up and down.he took the vehicle to the dealer and a technician referenced service bulletin number 23-04-02 for the same failure.since there was not an official recall, the dealer would not assume any liability for the repair costs.the manufacturer did not provide any assistance.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 172,000.
Ypulera alrikas collision center was returning vehicle to consumer when they hit something that pushed in the front end of vehicle.
The top of the driver's side front shock tower, as viewed from under the hood, is very corroded.mechanic advised getting rid of vehicle as soon as possible or face extensive $ repairs for shock tower and strut.area of corrosion was professionally rust proofed in 1998 and was still able to corrode.i wonder how bad the corrosion is on these vehicles that were not rust proofed?shock tower corrosion appears to be an ongoing problem with all 1996-2001 chrysler, dodge and plymouth minivans.its only a matter of time before struts start popping through the hoods on these vehicles, thus causing accidents.advise nhtsa to investigate as soon as possible.

The vehicle's front left strut corroded. The cause has yet to be determined. Please provide additional information.
Strut tower is corroded and 4 body shops said they would'nt attempt to fix.the following info was obtained by a gm dealership when we told them our problem.he did look up on the computer about bulletins issued regarding your problem.there was one issued on october of 2002 titled: suspension/body -strut tower corrosion #23-044-02.this means chrysler acknowleges they have a problem! brief history, i am 36 with a wife and two boys who are 11 and eight.both my wife and i graduated from michigan state university where i also got my mba.i have multiple sclerosis (ms).i went on disability in 1997.i am at about an 8.5 to 9 on the disability scale.zero being no symptoms 10 being dead.i am in a wheelchair.i have a feeding tube, a supra pubic catheter.i will be trying an intensive chemotherapy in the next two weeks.we are on a fixed income from social security and a long term care contract.i require nearly 24-hour care so my wife cant work.our annual income is about $34,000.we bought a plymouth grand voyager handicap van in 1998 for about $40,000.this week we had the oil changed.the mechanic said one of the two towers that hold the engine in place was rusted.he said to have a body shop look at it immediately.the body shop said they wouldnt touch it (pres kool).my wife called chrysler and an arrogant, impatient customer service rep named jay said to take it to maaco (another local body shop).they also told my wife no way would they fix it.every place my wife took it she was told the van had way more rust all over then a 1998 vehicle should have.another mechanic said no way should the tower be rusted like it is.my wife called chrysler again and spoke to erika who said there is nothing chrysler can or will do.our warranty is up so we are left with our only transportation being unsafe.
1.strut twer rusting out on driver side.2. Could cause loss of control and steering if it gives out.3. Will get strut tower cap from dealer and have it repaired.chrysler will only repair if i pay $250 dedutable.

Drivers side strut tower has severe corrosion. No other corrosion on vehicle.
Strut tower rusting out.
I have been told that the clock spring has been a high maintance item. This device controls the air bag, horn and cruse control. I consider this to be a safety issue and would like to find out if or has this been addressed by the manufacture or nhtsa . Thank you ed bradley.dt
Noticed noise right fnt when turning full right. Found right front bracket on strut for stabilizer bar broken in half and bar hanging loose. Had to replace both struts and align wheels. Could have caused loss of steering or breaking if not noticed.
Sway bar snapped. Could cause loss in steering. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

1998 plymouth grand voyager was diagnosed as needing new shock towers. My mechanic feels this is due to a manufacturer's defect since water does not drainonto the ground but rather collects above the shock tower causes premature rusting and necesssitating a steel piece havingto be welded into place .

Put the van in drive and it acts like it is in park/neutral then within 20seconds or more it decides to go. Now you will be driving and all of a sudden the van puts itselfin neutral and then back into drive after awhile.not safe!! there are several leaks underneaththe first5 minutes the van is turned on it dings like the door is open. After about 10 minutes the brake light shines on dash and the bell ringsthe van is parked for now.
Clock spring failure caused inoperable horn and cruise control and air bag light to stay on. These problems prevented the vehicle to pass utah safety inspection
Cruise control failed to operate andair bag light would intermittently come on/off while driving.dealer was notified.dealer thinks pcm-engine controler going bad.*yd
During highway driving and after the cruise control had been set, the cruise control would not disengage after i stepped on the brake pedal.my van unexpectedly and repeatedly would quickly accelerate immediately after i released the brake pedal.
While driving at65 mphcruise control and horn stopped working, consumer not sure about airbag light. Dealer replaced clock spring assembly.
I was driving and the whole dash panel went out, gas, speed , horn gauges
Ea01-007; air bag lightilluminated ondashboard, also, cruise control was inoperable. Consumer has yet to contact dealer. Please provide any further details.
Air bag light on the instrument panel is illuminated and will not go off.cruise control feature fails to operate, andhorndoes not work. Dealership examinedvehicle and determinedclockspring assembly in the steering column has failed, and was causing these problems.please provide any additional information / documentation.
While starting up the vehicle srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.horn and the cruise control worked intermittently.consumer drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanicdeterminedthat clock spring needed to be replaceddue to a worn out part.
The airbag light stays on. The cruise control and horn does not work. *la
Cruise control failed about 45 days ago.air bag light began coming on last week.air bag light goes on and off, but is on most of the time.
Airbag light came on, horn stopped working, cruise control stopped working. Clockspring failure diagnosed as problem. This vehicle, however, was not covered under the current chrysler/plymouth recall. It needs to be!.

Front windshield wipers sometimes will not turn on. The rear wiper and both washers work fine. Some components were replaced in 1999, but problem continues.
The rear heater damper actuator failed to operate the damper, melted down, then due to this meltdown, it ruined the main control box in the dash board on the heater controls......evidently shorted out.the rear actuator-mode control, part 4734026,(cost $45.60) and the ae control- a/c and heater controls, part # 467761ae, (cost $375), with $150 labor.total cost, $570.questions:is this a possible fire hazard?should not a fusible link, or fuse be installed in the system to keep actuator from being melted down and control box overload protection?this would be a simple fix to keep equipment from having failure and meltdown.plus seemingly high parts cost, and one week trying to get the parts.
G. The side window on our minivan shattered while the vehicle was parked in our driveway.the front windows were down, so there was not heat build-up in the vehicle.the police came and reported that it looked as if it had just shattered out from the inside.since nobody was inside the van, it had to have happened on its own.also, we asked our dealer about this, and he said that there have been plymouth vans like ours around town that have had the windows just shatter on their own due to this solar glass that is being used.our dealer also said that plymouth hasn't recalled any of the vehicles, and i don't feel that is right.what if my daughters had been sitting inside when it shattered..it could have been a tragedy.i hope plymouth will take care of this before someone does get seriously injured.also, being a family of limited income due to high medical expenses, this is not what we expected when we invested in a new vehicle.
Windshield wipers fail intermittantly.
Dealer has been unable to remedy the problems with the windshield wipers, many component have been replaced (multifunction switch, wiper motor and body control module) but none have been able to fix the problem, the wipers either don't come on or fail while in motion.nlm
Electrical problems with my 1998 plymouth grand voyager.wipers will not turn off and all gauges died.no speedometer, no tachometer, no fuel gauge and no temp gauge.
Intermittent wipers on my 1998 plymouth grand voyager do not work.
I have had 5 windshield wiper failures since about june 1999 (remember it has not rained much in maryland this summer so the wipers have not been used much). The condition lasts from 5 to 10 minutes.the wipers will either not start up or will fail during driving.after about the 5 or 10 minutes the wipers return to normal operation and so far have not failed after they start working.this appears to be a random event since i and the dealer have been unable to cause the problem to happen on demand.the dealer has tried to find wiring problems once but was unable to determine the cause.on 31 august the dealer is to replace a module to see if that fixes the problem but i will not know until after it rains again.it is unsettling to have your wiper blades fail while driving and could cause a seriouly dangerous situation if it happens on the highway.
The contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager.the contact stated that the windshield wipers would activate without warning and would not turn off.the dealer has not inspected the vehicle.the mechanic suggested that the cause of failure could be electrical.the current mileage is 178,000 and failure mileage was 170,000.
Intermittent wiper function ceased working correctly.would wipe a couple times then quit.turning it on and off caused it to work a couple more times then quit.dangerous, since one relies on the intermittent function to continue to work.problem came and went.more noticeable in wet weather (when of course you actually need the wipers) then in the dealers dry shop.finally dealer replaced the multi-function switch.worked better for a while, then same problem returned.dealer cannot find anything else wrong.refused to consider clock-spring problem.
