Air bag light stays on clicking sound coming from steering wheel. (clockspring suspected) dt

Consumer stated the air bag light was illuminated, causing air bag/cruise control and horn not work, dealer was contacted.

I got in the van in my driveway and turned the ignition switch on then i noticed that the air bag light was on. So i turned the ignition switch off waited a minute then turned it back on and the light was still on. I thought it was a fuse so i proceeded to my destination. As i arrived at my mom's house i tried to blow the horn, then i found out that my horn did not work. So i turned the van off and i called a friend who is a mechanic and he asked me if the air bag light stayed on even after i turned the van on and off i said yes then i explained everything to him. He told me that i needed to try my cruise control. And if it did not work then my clockspring is gone. Well cruise control did not work. And the airbag light is still on.

Air bag light has come on and stayed on.also, hornfailed to work, and cruise control operated randomly. Possible clockspring failure.

Clock spring on vehicle is causing problems in vehicle, for example the air bag light will come on, and the horn/cruise controlare not working.dealer charges of $217.79 in order to repair.

Air bag light comes / cruise control fails to work, and horn cannot be used. Problem happens only when engine starts, and isintermittent. The cruise control and the horn failures caused by clock spring assembly and was replaced.

Air bag light remains illuminated during normal operation.dealership examined vehicle and determined clockspring had to be replaced at consumers expense.consumer is requesting reimbursement due to being informed that this was part of a recall.

Drivers airbag did not deploy. The vehicle was hit in the left passenger slide door.the passenger by the left sliding door was killed.the accident occurred on 10/15/04. *sc

Plymouth service tells me that the car is too dangerous to drive.repair cost is $200+.there should be a warning to owners about this problem.the part should last longer.

Airbag light illuminated, horn not functioning, concern of safety of vehicle.

Clock spring on vehicle is not working properly which resulted in is that the air bag has been turned off.also the cruise control has been shut off.contacted dealer, and the dealer replaced the parts.

Airbag light stays on, vehicle has not been examined by dealer.

Airbag light was on, and cruise control stopped working.

Air bag light remains illuminated due to a malfunction within clock spring.

The seems to have a lot of problem shifting to a lower gear when on the road.often we can feel a jitter when the car is in motion and shifting the gear.the air bag light comes on often for no reason. Check engine light comes on and stays on for a few hours and goes away.

Airbag light came on. Dealer replaced the clock spring assembly.

Air bag light comes on and does not go out. Curise control does not work.horn does not work.the dealership here in bakersfield will not cooperate and says my car is not being recalled.will charge me over $90 to just look at the car. Have called them many times and is hard to get vehicle in. I purchased the vehicle there.will have the repairs done elsewhere.chrysler is not cooperating at all.will never recommend this auto to anyone. Chrysler does not stand behind their products.

The dashboard indicator for the airbag came on and wouldn't go out.i took into the dealer and they diagnosed it as a failed clock spring.the horn and cruise control also were not working.in researching this on this site and the others it seems to be a fairly common part failure.it also seems that when it does fail the airbag will no longer function.if one doesn't realize the problem exists there could be a false sense of security.the dealer who replaced the part said that it wasn't covered under any warranty due to it being a passive restraint system part.i found a few mentions on the internet of recalls for this problem. Is this correct?

Air bag light has been on and will not go off.also, horn has failed to operate.

The failure mode started as intermittent (air bag light came on) and the within a month stayed on permanently.dt

Voyager air bag and speed control.stockton dodge service dept. Estimated $225.00 plus tax to replace a steering wheel "clockspring".i was informed that this is a typical failure on these chrysler vehicles.stockton dodge told me the "clockspring" was not a recall on this 1997 voyager.

In early june, my air bag dash light came on. I took the car to the dealer for repair. The charge for diangosis and replacement of this part (clock spring) was excessive. The diagnostic effort took less than 15 minutes, for which i was charged $99. Labor and parts were another $182. Out of curiosity i sought info on the web and found the ntsa site, where i learned that many other owners experienced the same gouging and that one owner had actually disassembled the clock spring and found that there was a clear problem with the internal wiring. First, chrysler is making a very handsome profit on the part and second, the repair costs were outrageous.

Clock spring assembly was replaced, butair bag light is still on,horn is working again. Consumer has not checkedcruise control.

1997 plymouth grand voyager clock spring recall.*mrthe vehicle clock spring failed prior to recall notice.the consumer requested reimbursement but the manufacturer refused because the consumer didn't submit page two of the invoice.*scc *nlm

Air bag lightilluminated on dashboardm consumer has contacted dealer, dealerdetermined that clock spring assembly had malfunctioned and needed to be replaced.

Ea 01 007/air bag clockspring:air bag sensor light remained on and, hornwas inoperative.dealer / manufacturer were notified, and informed consumer that problem was not covered under a recall at this time, and any repairs would be at consumer's expense. Consumer states cruise control is also inoperative.

On approximately 10/15/2001 while sitting in the driveway, i noticed that the air bag light was on.at that same time, i tried to use the horn to let someone know that i was there to pick them up.the horn did not work.since i did not want to pay the $70 fee to have the dealership "diagnose" the problem (without having any of that money go towards the actual payment of the repair), i decided to take it to my mechanic.he said that he would not work on any component related to the air bag because of the high cost of replacing the air bag in the event it accidentally deployed.he also said that since the airbag light was on, it could either not deploy in an accident when i needed it, or that it could deploy while i was driving and did not need it.he considered it a safety issue.he recommended taking it to the dealer.after doing more research, i have found out that the part in question is a clockspring wiring harness and that 124,511 vehicles have had the defective component replaced by chrylser.i consider this a safety issue, a recall issue and an economic issue.if chrysler charges $70 per diagnosis and $250 for each repair of the 124,511 defective clockspring wiring harness/designflaws, that equals about $40 million.how much profit is chrysler making on repairing their own safety related design flaw and how many people are getting injured because a recall is not being issued on this component.

In 2005 while entering onto the highway going home from some personal appointmentsa small car hit our full size van from behind and caused us to flip over and roll over 8 times and slide at least 2 city blocks before it stopped. We were not even doing the speed limit when we were hit. The front window shattered and glass was in our eyes but our airbags did not deploy. We were stuck upside down my seat belt was stuck and my husband had to pull me out of the driver side window. I had to treat for tmj problems, stress and trauma in my neck and back for a few years and i still have some issues. Do we have a claim against the manufacturer?

The dashboard indicator for the airbag came on and wouldn't go out.i took into the dealer and they diagnosed it as a failed clock spring.the horn and cruise control also were not working.in researching this on this site and the others it seems to be a fairly common part failure.it also seems that when it does fail the airbag will no longer function.if one doesn't realize the problem exists there could be a false sense of security.the dealer who replaced the part said that it wasn't covered under any warranty due to it being a passive restraint system part.i found a few mentions on the internet of recalls for this problem. Is this correct?

Airbag light has come on. Dealer said that clock spring assembly needed to be replaced.consumer stated that airbag will not work due to break in clockspring which supplies power to the airbag, cruise control and horn .

No summary listed for above vehicle.

I used to be a machanic, i have taken the defective clockspring assy apart and found that the wiring harness that is suppose to wind & unwind--i found an area that was bending/kinked instead so it was just a matter of time till turning the steering wheel enough the wires would break. In my opinion this is a defective part and since it plys a part in the proper function of the airbag system and horn this is related to a safety item.. I did see on your web site that there is an investigation on this right now.

Horn, airbag, and cruise control inoperable

Airbag light has come on and horn stopped working. Vehicle has not been examined by a dealer.

"airbag" warning light stays on while driving and horn does not work. Mechanic says the airbag clockspring needs to be replaced.same symptoms as nhtsa action number ea01-007.

Airbag light illuminated, and two days later, horn and cruise control stopped operating.consumer heard that when these components go out it may be a clock spring. Failure. Please provide any further information.

Airbag light stays on while driving most of the time.horn and cruise control has stopped working completely.

Air bag lightis on, and the manufacturer is not aware of any reason for this to occur.

Airbag sensor light stays illuminated while driving. Also, cruise control is inoperable, and intermittentlyhorn assembly is inoperable.dealer has been notified.possible clockspring failure.

The clock spring had become inoperative.the consumer requested a reimbursement of the monies spent on repair, because of a recall that was issued.scc

The contact owns a 1997 plymouth grand voyager.while driving 10-15 mph, the driver and passenger side air bags deployed without impact.the vehicle was able to be driven.the vehicle had not been taken to the dealer.the vehicle was examined by the manufacturer and they filed a report.the current mileage was 89,948 and failure mileage was 89,946.

False deployment of both passenger and driver air bags when driving over pot hole, injury to consumer (facial/head), when deployment occurred. Mjs

Consumerwas involved in a head-on collision and the vehicle's airbags did not deploy. The manufacturre and dealer have been contacted.

While driving at 15 mph and without any warningpassenger's air bag deployed.

We broadsided a van who which went through a red light. It was a total front end hit on our van and the air bags did not deploy.

When van was hit by another vehicle, on the passenger's side at a high rate of speed, there was no deployment of the passenger's front air bag. Also, horn does not work, remote entry on driver's side door does not work, air bag warning light stays on, fuel gauges does not work, a/c heater blink on and off, inside dome light blinks on and off, steering column freezes, cruise control works on and off.

Daimler chrysler refuses to reimburse us for clockspring for a 1997 plymouth grand voyager. We replaced the part before we had knowledge of the recall. We submitted the required information for reimbursement and chrysler said that we would not get reimbursed because we replaced the part ourselves after the recall was announced. We were not aware of recall until after replacement when we received another recall notice. We never received the first ones. I feel it should not matter if we replaced the part ourselves after the recall. Especially knowing that this failure affected the driver side airbag.

The child seat failure consisted of a cable connecting the latch plate to the belt tensioner mechanism.the failure is not faile "safe".a failure safe mode would maintain the seat belt and child restrained.the failure mode instead leaves the belt loose.this leaves parents with a false sense of security since they believe their child is safely restrained.this is also an expensive repair since chrysler designed the integrated child seats contained in the bench to be unmaintainable requiring parents to purchase the complete bench in excess of $600.nlm

Upon attempt to remove child from build-in child safety seat, harness locked and would not dis-engage.only alternative for removal was to cut the belt.please contact with recommendations for repair and/or further action.

Dt: the contact owns a 1997 plymouth grand voyager tk. The vehicle has an integrated car seat that was built in and the straps kept tightening with the child in the seat. The child seat straps had to be cut to get the child out of the car seat. The dealership and manufacturer were not contacted. This occurred on september 10, 2005.

Integrated child safety seat belt retractor failed to release child.

Straps on the integrated child car seat are too loose. Child can climb out of the seat. There is no way to tighten them up. Dealer has been contacted.

Consumer states child safety seat's straps don't lock in place at times, and other tomes the straps tighten up while child is in the seat.

The instrument panel started going off and on. When it would go offthe abs light would come on andthenthe engine service light would come on, during this time every thing went out. The speedometer, odometer, gas and temperature gauges went out. I would hit the dash and it would work correctly. I finally had to replace it and that one lasted about a year and a half. So know i have put another one in and at this time having problems getting it to function. I see a lot of complaints on the internet, but none onnhtsa website.

When i turn on my car after 3 to 5 secondit would turn off and when i am driving when it reaches about 15 to 25 the check engine light will turn on and car turns off and steering wheel dos not work and thebrakes dos not work, but the electricity is still works , the stereo would still be on.

So far this vehicle has been a lemon. I have replaced everything on it, from fuel pump, sensors, steering column, belt tensioner and pulley, alternator, wiper switch that seems to have a mind of its own even tho i replaced a new switch. Now more electrical problems. The instrument cluster is now messed up. Abs light and check engine light keep coming on all my gauges go flat. Lights go dim. Then suddenly lights will flash and they will all come back on. Then go off again. Now, not only do they go flat but now i have a shifting problem. The vehicle will not shift. It seems to be stuck in 2nd gear. I replaced the whole braking system. Egr valve, cam sensor, cruise control, the body. The gas pedal use to accelerate on its own. That was a little scary goin down the road not knowing when it was gonna do that. Everyone who rides with me keeps joking as if the vehicle is haunted. Lights go weak, i've replaced all the bulbs cleaned the headlights. Nothing seems to work right on this vehicle. I've already invested thousands. Way more then its worth. I've had problems where the vehicle just refuses to start. Sometimes not a problem. Then usually in the cold it wont turn over at all. I have replaced the battery numerous times checked for codes. Airbag light would come on. Transmission hesitates. Sometimes vehicle shudders acts like its gonna quit.vehicle just has on going problems.

Entire dash board instrument cluster dies without any notice, comes back on its own and dies. Serious safety hazard especially at night.

If the van goes through a puddle in the road air conditioner compressor belt slides off engine.when this occurs vfehicle loses power steering and stalls because the battery is drained.

I have had problems with this vehicle ever since i bought it.i took the van to a garage for the problem i'm reporting and they said it was a problem with the vehicle losing grounding and burning out the pcm(?), bcm(?).they also told me that this is not a part that is manufactured for replacement, you have to pull the defective one out and send it in to be repaired.this will take anywhere from 2 to 5 days and the cost is $1,500.add to this, 2 to 5 days of a rental car in order to be able to commute to and from work.never will i buy another plymouth.ever.

A spark from an unknown source ignited gasoline from asmall leak in the fuel pump and resulted in the minivan catching on fire.the wiring of the vehicle was also burned in the fire.the repair shop who intially looked at the vehicle felt it would be better for chrysler to perform the repair work due to the wiring being involved.our local chrysler dealership refused to allow the car to be toed to the dealership until national chrysler sent out an investigator to determine the cause of the fire.we have been provided little information from chrysler other than their belief the fire was not due to a manufacturing problem.they have not stated what they believe caused the fire and the delay in getting our vehicle repaired was over 1 week.we have yet to get the vehicle back!

Severe electrical problem.wipers come on by themselves, headlights stay on, dashboard lights go on and off while driving.vehicle overheats, a/c stops working.this has been the absolute worst vehicle ever owned.it cost too much to keep repairing, please advise on the electrical problem possibilities.thanks.

When car is slowing to make a turn, the windshield wipers come on.the service engine light stays on. When a diagnostic test was performed, the code which came up indicated a problemdid not exist.it was determined ashort caused the windshield wipers and engine light to stay on.when the computer was reset, the light came back on in a matter of minutes.i do not think this problem is due to age of the car.many of my friends who have these same autos have the same problem.to correct the problem will require an extensive search of the electrical wiring and is performed on an hourly rate.this could well cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars to track down the problem.i am unable to sell my vehicle due to the problem without spending a large sum of money to correct the problem.this problem began several years ago, but was only sporadic.it did not occur enough to warrant a search.in the past year it has become routine.what can plymouth corporation do to correct this problem without the expense being that of the owner.the mechanic at the shop also indicated that he was completely familiar with this problem occurring in most vans of this age.please advise what the next step should be.

Check engine light fail to come on. This in turn cause the fuel pump to start failing, which in turn cause one of the heads to have a mis-fire. This has cause me to fail maryland emissions cause they hook your vehicle up to a computer. Break down of repairs below from the chrysler dealer that calls it a fivestar dealer !!!fuel pump = $600.00 check engine light ( wiring ) = $350.00 new head one side = $1,100.00this is from a man who changes the oil every 2,500 miles and takes great care of the vehicle my vw has 250,000 miles and still runs great.i called chrysler but they said it my problem.

I have problems with my wipers going on and right back off since the month i bought this vehicle in 2000 . I cant get it fixed because noone knows why it does it . Just this week i had my fan relay module replaced , only to learn my transmission is now not worknig it stops at 3rd gear only todrop to 1 gear . While trying to get that fixxed they told me my water pump is leaking (which is ok and expected of most vehicles , ) i have had to have my dash light computer reset because all my ac dfrost and wiper lights were blinking continuously. I dont know what to do this is only a 97 model and i havent even made my final payment but now i have all these expensive repairs. I have had i tick in my motor that rattles on acceleratin forever and change my oil every 3 to 4000 miles like i should . I also have the winning in the steering the thump every so often but cant tell where that is coming from not to mention my a/c compressor rattles. My belt on my tensioner pully flu aff about 6 months ago going down the road i had to put a new pukky plus both new belts on . And they squeek like crazy . Camshaft cracked.yh

The vehicle stalled, when the vehicle made a turn.

The bolt holding the idler pulley broke rendering the cooling system, power steering, etc. Useless.luckily, the vheicle was operating at low speed, and my wife was able to handle the vehicle.this has happened twice, and the van has only 35000 miles!

While driving in a mall parking lot, made a turn and heard a loud bang. Steering wheel locked up. I managed to turn the wheel to avoid hitting a parked car and brought the van to a stock. Inspection found that the retaining bolt holding the belt tensioner pulley had snapped off causing the serpentine belt to come off and resulting in power steering failure. Inspection of the failed bolt by aircraft mechanics revealed that the bolt may have had as many as 5 internal stress cracks. The camshaft suffered a spun bearing which resulted in no lubrication being pumped to the rear head.this lack of lubrication resulted in a rear tower failure and the wearing of a hole in the rocker arm.even at 95000 miles, this seems to be low for the new engines of today and i feel this is premature engine failure caused either by a poor design or a manufacturer's assembly related problem.because it is out of the warranty period, the dcx customer support is totally non responsive and unhelpful.the nhtsa should look into why there is no recourse for the consumer to address these types of problems with the oems.in fact, the consumer is left without any recourse what so ever.a failure at this mileage which is costing me $4800 because of an initial misdiagnosis by a dodge dealer in colorado springs is totally unacceptable.

Engine cuts off while driving. It has happenned numerous times. I've had it to the dealer twice for this. They say they cannot find the problem and nothing has been done to fix this. Also, at times, there is a momentary loss of power to the wheels while pressing the accelerator. Dealer cannot find this problem either. Mileage at first failure, date of first failure and failure speed are approximate.

If the van goes through a puddle in the road air conditioner compressor belt slides off engine.when this occurs vfehicle loses power steering and stalls because the battery is drained.

While pulling up to an intersection i heard a clunk under the van like i had something hit the undercarriage of the van.i went to turn and had no power steering.after pulling off the side of the road i found the serpentine belt hanging loose.i went to a service station and they found that the bolt securing the tensioner pulley had broken and the tensioner was gone.the dealership that we got the parts from told our mechanic that they have requests for two or three of the tensioners a week due to the same problem.it cost almost $400 to fix the problem.

Chrsler dealer refuses to provide copy of service bulliten no. 070299, nhtsa item no: sb606159 concerning serpentine belt slipping off tensioner idler pulley.

Vehicle has broken serpentine belt 11 times since purchased in august 1997.vehicle looses power steering and alternator when this happens.brackets, pulleys, tensioners and belts have all been replaced again and again but problem worsens.last belt lasted only 2 months and 1500 miles.

While having our car serviced under clockspring recall, they found the serpintine belt tensioner frozen and water pump leaking coolant. The dealer gave us an estimate of $566 to replace the serpentine belt, tensioner, water pump, and coolant flush. The dealer told us the belt could fail at any moment.

Subject dealer diagnosed (service engine soon) light came on during may 2001, took to voyles chrysler-plymouth to getengine serviced and technician advised there was anevaporative emmission leak at the gas tank, that a seal was bad and that the tank would need to be replaced with a cost of approximately $900.00, if my memory serves me correctly. Since that time, i have heard reports of a possible recall on this defect and iwould like to report this as a possible covered problem. When i fill the gas tank, i can't fill over 3/4 tank because of the smell of raw gasoline in the interior. I'm afraid that it is an accident awaiting to happen and i want to go on record that i have reported this to the proper authorities.i am not the original owner and i don't know if chrysler has a record of this transaction. Oh, by the way voyles reported on my service record that the parts had been ordered but after 2 weeks i called and their service writer told me they had dropped the ball and didn't send the order in. Thats when i thought i would start checking for recalls.the odor is much more distinct now and it needs prompt attention. Please advise if this is covered under a recall. Thanks for your assistance. Over the course of the last couple years i have noticed that the lenses that cover the headlights on my 1997 plymouth grand voyager have become increasingly hazed, or fogged over. The hazing has caused the light to become so diffused, that driving at night has become very difficult at best. If the weather is bad (rain, or heavy snow) at night it is almost impossible to see properly.i have seen a number of other plymouth voyagers that appear to have the same problem.i believe that the type of plastic used in the manufacture of the headlight assemblies was unsuitable for a safety part that is exposed to the elements as car (van) headlights are.i would hope that action will be taken to correct this defect so that nobody is injured or killed as a result.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

For several years the lenses covering my headlights are getting more and more hazed.this is not due to anything i have done on my part.the hazing has caused the lights to become so dense that night driving is becoming extremely dangerous.i am now very caution and limit my night driving with this vehicle.i have also began to notice other grand voyagers experiencing the same difficulty.this hazing is not from my own abuse through automatic car washes or from neglect.it is a defect.i have taken the vehicle to a repair shop who tried to improve the hazing but it was only minimally affective.to have these lenses replaced will cost over $600!my husband's 1987 honda civic's lights and lenses are outstanding.i believe this is a defect in the manufacturing of this headlight/lens.

I was on my way to work at 6:30 one morning on a two-lane highway, driving about 60 mph, when the transmission failed.i was able to pull over to the side of the road and park.i shut off the engine, started the van again, and tried to proceed.the van would not shift out of first gear.i pulled off again and called my husband. He called the local dealer and was told that it "sounded like it was an electronic problem" and it would be safe to drive the vehicle home in "limp" mode.the van is still in the shop.what was thought to be an electronic problem has now turned into a major problem.it seems that some gears inside the transmission broke.the estimated cost of repair is $1500.00 or higher.the dealer told us that he has not seen a problem with these transmissions.i was told by two different transmission places that they have seen a lot of problems with these transmissions.several sites on the web also list consumer complaints about these transmissions.this van has been maintained properly so i think it is unreasonable for the transmission to fail like it did. There were no warning signs at all.what upsets me is the potential for a major accident in a case like this.what if i had been passing someone, someone had been tailgating me, etc.? i also wonder how many other people have had this problem but did not report it? what, if anything, can be done? mm.

Transmission - shudders/vibrates/hesitates when upshifting from 1-2 gears.a/c compressor, starter and/or ignition, and cruise control are having problems or quit working all at about the same time

Started when i would take off in first gear, it would vibrate really hard, like a manual transmition does when it needs to down shift. Then i was almost in a collision, when i was stopped on the side of a hill, and went to pull over, and to my surprise i rolled backwards, as if in nutral.my trasmission was gone. After a very large tow bill, and 1500 rebuilt transmission, my dim lights only work when they want to, the passenger window is to the point where it almost wont go up.....there's almost too much more to go on.

I took the vehicle to a transmission repair shop and was told the main seal (pump seal) was defective and needed to be replaced because of leaking. I choose to pull the trans mission and found a crack on a machined surface inside the bell housing behind the tourque converter. The crack is 1/16" wide and 1" to 1 1/2" long. The machined area looks to be designed to allow clearence for the torque converter. The crack also appears to be push thru from the passengers side drive axle assembly meaning it is raised inside the bell housing. My complaint is this appears to be a flaw in the design that allows clearence for the tourque converter causing a thin wall in the bell housing. Is there any type of recall or investigation that would allow owners to have their vehicles fixed or checked for this problem?

I have always kept up with my repairs and had no prior history of slippage.i was told that a pin became loose and that the gears simply fell out of place.i was told that this could have happened whiledriving! this scared me due to the fact that i have a family and my life was in jeopardy while driving what i thought was a safe family vehicle.i could understand if i had prior warning signs of the transmission slipping, but for something like this to happen without any warning is alarming.i hope that this is not a common issue with the plymouth grand voyager.i have owned 5 cars in my lifetime.they have all lasted well into the 100,000 mile range without any major problems due to my diligent maintenance. I feel that this is a serious issuein workmanship that can cause a potential catastrophic end to a driver or a family(ies).i hope that this issue be looked into further, because i feel that this is not an isolated case. Vehicle wasn't going in gear. Also, windshield wipers would go off intermittently.

Differential blew apart, causing fluid leakage, consumer states it sounded like a shot gut being shot and then the vehicle just quit, dealer found a hole on the outside of the transmission casing.

Consumer states that while drivingtransmission would slip. Dealer notified.

There was no previous problems with the transmission.i started the van put it in reverse and it sounded like something came apart inside.there was no warning, now the transmission is locked up.i am aware of chrysler's transmission problems and thought this should be reported.i don't know what would have happen if we had been on the highway when this happened.thank you very much, roger cecil

You can shift from park to reverse/drive without applying brake.

Manufacturer says not uncommon for transmission to fail 80,000 to 100,000 miles.

Transmission main seal damaged causing fluid to leak and imminent transmission failure. Transmission specialist said such failure is very unusual for low mileage vehicle and suggested recall may be issued for voyager/caravan models.dealer denied this is a manufacturer problem.review of nhtsa complaint section reveals otherwise.how many failures does it take for a recall to be issued?

On four occasions transmission gear shift failed.

The consumer has experienced problems withautomatic transmission. Whilevehicle was parked in the driveway it drifted forward on its own and crashed into the wall in garage.the consumerhad to get in the vehicle and put shift indicator down in order to get the vehicle to stop rolling.the manufacturer has been contacted. *ml

Able to shift from park to gear without having foot onbrake.

Van rolls significantly backwards when on slight incline.must keep one foot on brake and other on gas the minute you need to move or you will roll into the car behind.transmission does not hold car at all.when stopped the car can be pushed forward.dealer said this is normal for vans and would not try to fix it.if it causes an accident, dealer and manufacturer is libel.

A child was able to pull the shift lever withoutbrake being applied, causing vehicle to roll, resulting in a collision.

Gear shift can be engaged without depressing brake.. Small child can shift the gears if accidently falls against shifter, for a family car i consider this quite dangerous, all other cars i've ever driven had a "lock" of some type on the gear shift :ie you had to depress the brake at same time or a thumb button to depress (floor mounted gear shift).

Automatic transmission can be shifted to reverse or drive without having foot on the brake, design flaw. Yh

I am a police officer and have taken reports twice on grand voyagers where they have popped out of gear and rolled unnattended.on 5-10-2000 my sisters vehicle which was parked on my graded drive did the same.it nearly ran me over and struck my vehicle.her transmission can be put into gear without depressing the brakes.the same was true for the two reports i took in my official capacity. The dealer told me that although it is a mandated feature it only lasts so long and that it is not covered under warranty.this is a matter that should be looked into before the defect results into a fatality.

Vehicle was parked with engine running, emergency brake not engaged. Suddenly vehicle went backward, came to stop when it hitting a cement post. No injuries, damage $700-900.

Differential bolt broke while driving, cracking casing, and causing a hole in transmission/damaging it. Mechanic and auto parts stores stated that this was a reoccurring common problem, anda design defect.the manufacturer pointed out that there was no recall on this part and the warranty had expired.

I have been told my mechanic at kelly buick dealership in mason (chrysler dealership) that the bolt that broke and caused the damage to my transmission is a defect in design in the differential and that in their opinion there should be a recall.at the time that my van was taken to their dealership for damage determination, they had a another plymouth grand voyager there with same damage and since then, i have learned of another van that the same thing happened to and needs a new transmission because this bolt broke.i asked the mechanic if there was anything that i could have done to prevent this from happening and he said no that there is no way of determining that this would happen or be able to prevent it through preventitive maintenance.i am thankful that i was not doing 70mph down the highway with my four children in the car.the damage that this bolt breaking caused when it happened, caused my steering to lock up and i was unable to turn my steering wheel at all.i had to coast to a stop along side the road.had i been traveling the highway and that happened, i do not want to think of what could have happened.i have talked with chrysler corp. And their position is that because the vehicle is no longer under a warranty, and that at this time there is no recall on my van for this problem, they will not cover this repair.i disagree with that determination totally.this is a repair that was caused by a defect in their design and therefore is a cost incurred to me that is out of my control.it is not like i did not take care of my engine or brakes and they failed me, that would be in my control.i believe that there is a serious problem here that needs to be addressed before someone gets killed. Even though i am sure it is very profitable for chrysler in the long run (they are getting people back over and over in replacement transmission repairs) it is a very dangerous situation and needs to be handled immediately.

After purchasing my minivan i found what i felt was a serious safety issue.with the car running, the gear shift can be engaged with out the need to depress the brake.i have seen this feature on most cars i've driven or researched.i didn't realize that this was not amandatory feature until a few months later wen i accidently caught the gear shift with my purse strap.i nearly ran myself down.i feet that if this is a minivan marketed to families, this should be taken into account.what if it had been a small child who was where they shouldn't be and this happened? i wasn't sure if any recommendations could be made, but i felt i needed to have someone hear my concerns. Thank you

Seat belts not tight enough.

There was no sensation of being held back and no shoulder injury. My face hit the steering column and i suffered multiple facial fractures and cuts, requiring 25 stitches. I have permanent nerve damage on my face and lips.

The child seat failure we experienced can easily go undetected. The cable connecting the latch plate to the seat belt retractor mechanism has broken which prevents the seat belt from tensioning and restraining our child. I f the driver does not have detailed understanding of how the seat belt should work the driver will be lulled into a false sense of security. When chrysler was contacted they offered to pay for half of the repair. I believe this is a design flaw that should be repaired by the manufacturer. I have owned reliable child seats which have endured for many years, all of which were far less expensive and none with such a silent and dangerous defect. I would appreciate your assistance and believe that this matter should be pursued for the benefit of the other unknowing drivers.

When the brakes are applied brake pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance and uneven brake wear.

The dealer said the brakes were fine since then the driver has to double the amount of distance between any vehicle to have enough stopping time. The second time driver applied the brakes the abs brakes never pumped on, and that caused the driver to hit another vehicle.this accident happened on feb.21,1998.

Contacted chrysler who took care of the repair, immediately.repairs were made at the dealers the same day. Damaged parts were taken to the dealer service department. I was surprised to find out that this retaining bolt is not rated for high stress. If the breakage had happened at high speed it could have caused a serious accident. Suggest that these bolts be inspected and replaced at around 30,000 miles. Or replaced with a rated bolt. Locked up. Managed to turn the wheel and bring the van to a stop. Found that the bolt that retains the idler pulley and tensioner had snapped off, causing the serpantine belt to come off, resulting in power steering failure. There was no grease left in the ball joint, rust and corrosion appears to have contributed to the failure. These joints are of poor design and should notfail to the point of complete loss of steering control.. Happened while parking the vehicle, if it had separated on the highway at speed could have been a serious accident.

Rack and pinion steering failed, causing vehicle to shudder.

Failure of the rack and pinion steering system on 1997 plymouth voyagervin [xxx]. First failure was july, 16 2001 at 72,936 miles requiring complete replacement of the rack and pinion and the power steering pump. Failure mode was extremely difficult steering ie. High force required on the steering wheel to guide the vehicle. Second failure occurred at 104,575 with same symptom as above and again required replacement of the entire rack and pinion. Vehicle safety issue(chrysler tsb 23-044-02),rust through ofupper strut towers 1996-2000 chrysler, dodge, plymouth minivans. Collapse of strut tower would result one or more of the following: 1/ sudden change of steering geometry;total loss of steering; lockup of one of the front wheels, blowout of one of the front tires.this is a problem which chrysler has known about for years. They only issued a tsb once most of the vehicles involved (96-98) were beyond the manufactures rust perforation warranty.this should not be merely a "service" recall, but a "safety" recall. This is due to a manufacturing defect which failed to seal between component panels allowing moisture to penetrate and cause hidden rust issue which reveals itself only when the structural damage is already done.the recommended repair is also questionable -- utilizing only epoxy to afix a cap to the top of the strut. The inner rust perforation is not cut out, only covered up. The treatment is primarily cosmetic.i am very concerned about this issue and feel it has not only endangered life, but devalued the vehicle.i have paid to have the problem repaired but feel that this should be chrysler's responsibility. I would appreciate any follow up you can do on my behalf and that of other minivan owners. (i've no doubt that the vast majority are yet unaware of the condition of their vehicles.)sincerelykelvin ironsidemesa az.

The drivers side strut tower is rusting out, but not on the top like most of them do.3/4 of the side of the tower is rusted and gone.the passenger side still looks good. The rear door was open.i heard a loud noise and i found out the passenger side bolt bad broken on the lift support.the door did not fall.i am having a very difficult time raising the rear door wait one support.

Discovered severe rust-through of the front left-side strut tower while doing routine fluid level checking. The damage is under the hood of the vehicle, and initially appeared as dimpled metal without any holes or gaps. The metal crumbled in my hand, and revealed the rust through as i picked away the pieces. I researched the problem on the internet, and found many identical problems, as well as the tsb from chrysler: 2304402 (nhtsa 10000317). Several of the references had pictures that looked just like our vehicle. As the tsb notes, there is a special repair kit created and supplied by the manufacturer just to correct this specific issue. Although out vehicle has not had any collapse or other catastrophic failure, several of the owners had experienced severe problems as a a result of this structural flaw.the defect was described many times as a result of a manufacturing detail, where two single pieces of metal were layered to build the strut tower. The seam between these two layers of metal was not properly sealed, and as a result, moisture was allowed to enter the seam and corrosion inside the plate sandwich began.with the problem inside the metal structure essentially hidden from view, the metal decay could continue to advance without easy discovery. The tsb is dated nearly 2 years after the last vehicle date, with warranty coverage already expired.this is a serious structural and safety problem, and chrysler is not offering to recognize the defect and fix this except at our cost. This manufacturing defect, as demonstrated by the unusual damage pattern as well as the special repair kit needs a safety recall to support owners and correctly assign fault.

When vehicle is parked on even the slightest slope, the passenger doors, when released close at tremendous force. There is no stop or slowing mechanism in place on the doors once they have been released. The door on our van was closed by one of our children. At that time, the two year old was standing near the door and whas struck by the edge. This resulted in a forehead laceration and her being knocked to the ground. My concern is that if she had been entering or exiting the vehicle, or if any part of her body were in the doorway, she would have suffered a severe or even fatal crush injury. This defect could be easily remedied by the manufacturer through the addition of a slowing mechanism on the track of the door or even an automatic stop similar to those in use with garage doors. When chrysler was contacted, they could not have been less interested in hearing my concerns. Given that most people who own minivans do so because of small children, this design defect is a tragedy waiting to happen.

The strut towers are corroding on 1996-2000 town & country/voyager/caravan mini vans.chrysler has admitted this in tsb # 23-044-02.i think the problem is more widespread.anyway, my understanding is that, if the strut tower fails during operation, the result can be devastating.there are many young children riding in these vehicles, soccer moms etc.i find it incredible that there is not more visible information on this.i am the original owner of my 1997, and at the same phone and address as when i bought it.i have not been notified.i accidentally ran into this while researching for new struts for the vehicle.i looked at my vehicle and sure enough, one of the strut towers is failing.i called the dealer, the remedy is $500 per strut tower.if this isn't a classic design flaw (that is potentially lethal), i'm not sure i could find a better example.two things need to be done.(1) information needs to get out, it's not happening.(2) chrysler needs to absorb or at least share in the cost of the repairs.i believe if #(1) above were happening adequately, # (2) would have already happened.we need to set aside that the automakers are in trouble, and stop favoring them at the expense of children's lives.

Dodge caravan strut tower rust perforation - significant rust perforation on the right and left hand strut towers severely weakens the structural integrity of these main load path members.failure of the strut towers would lead to uncontrolled displacement of the upper end of the strut resulting in loss of control of the vehicle.since the possibility of failure exists at any time while driving the vehicle, should it occur at highway speeds, serious bodily injury and death are likely.

I also have the winning in the steering the thump every so often but cant tell where that is coming from not to mention my a/c compressor rattles. My belt on my tensioner pully flu aff about 6 months ago going down the road i had to put a new pukky plus both new belts on . And they squeek like crazy . I dont think these are normal problems can you help it is getting to costly >??????

Rusted out strut tower.

A mounting bracket on the driver's side front strut tower that secures the upper end of the connecting arm between the strut tower and the front stabilizer bar failed catastrophically.the failure occurred while driving on the freeway at 60 mph resulting in an immediate, severe dive and pull to the left.then the free end of the arm, still holding the bracket remnant, swung out and down into the inner tire sidewall resulting in a blow out.it was all that i could do to get the van safely to the side of the road.i consider this failure to be life threatening and structural in nature as there was no sign of corrosion and no warning of the impending event.the break at the strut tower showed very clean metal.

While driving the vehicle noticed the rear sway bar was broke. Dealerdont have the part at this moment. Please provide further information.. Ts

Vehicle is garage kept, and well maintained.original tires with light to moderatetreadwear.on clear dry well maintained toll road while on cruise control at 70 mph, the front lefttire sidewall completely blew out.my wife (the driver) was fortunately able to keep the vehicle under control and make it to the shoulder.this could have been disastrous if she had not kept her head and not slammed on brakes or panicked and oversteered.we felt it necessary to replace the entire set of tires, even though the remaining tire's treadware seemed fine. We saved the pieces of the tire that blew, took digital pictures, and video. Iquestion safety of the tire and large mini-van matchup.hopefully, should this happen to anyone else, they too are fortunate, as was my wife.(tiresize: p215/65r15)( dot number:tire size: p215/65r15 )

No summary listed for above vehicle.( dot number:)

Took vehicle to have recall repair work done, but was told by the mechanic at the dealership that nothing was wrong with the tires and they didn't need replacing. (97v-200).

1. Tire tread separation with left rear tire, and 2. Left front bead seal blowout.

I noticed a small split on the outboardsidewall of the left front tire.even though the tires had adequate tread remaining, i decided to have it checked out.one other tire had a slow leak, and based on prices, i decided to replace all four tires.after the installation of the new tires, the service manager commented that i must have someone looking out for me.i asked what he meant and he took me out into the service bay to show me the tires.three of the four had splits between the sidewall and tread measuring 13 inches or more.two of the tires had multiple splits.all three tires had the longest splits on the inboard side of the tires (only one had a small split on the outboard sidewall) and thus the worst problems had not been visible fom outside the van.because of the slow leak in one tire i had been keeping close tabs on the air pressure to keep it within range for all four, but for some reason the tires had inordinate wear on the outside edges only.i didn't keep any of the tires, but after the recent news regarding a possible recall of some goodyear tires , i felt i should report it.i don't know if this is one of the tires possibly being considered for a recall, but someone should look into these tires.the service manager indicated that one or more would likely have lost tread withintwo hundred miles.i feel very lucky. Recall97v2000000 concerning tire failure.on prior year for same problem.engine damage could occur.

Complete belt separation without tire deflation...belts flew off leaving $1,348 worth of damage to vehicle....tires were inspected prior to leaving on vacation from florida to wisconsin...belt separation took place outside ofmaquoketa, iowa.this tire should not have separated in such manner....fortunatelymy family was not harmed by this incident, other than financially.upon contacting michelin discovered the company was not interested in this problem.hopefully this information will possibly prevent this type of problem happening to others....thank you for your time....james e. Someone else we know in our family had same problems with their van, they had to trade it off!!!!!. No safety defect listed.

Intermittently, ongoing problem with vehicle stalling while driving. Wheels would lock up and the oil light would come on. Vehicle been in / out of dealer shop on four occasions and condition still exists.dealer/mfr. Notiified.

Clock spring assembly

When foot is on brake pedal, car surges forward, causing an accident. Dealer has found no cause for problem, which continues to occur. (date below is approximate for accident). *nlm

Airbag light illuminated, and two days later, horn and cruise control stopped operating.consumer heard that when these components go out it may be a clock spring. Failure. Please provide any further information.

While driving at highway speeds and trying to pass another vehicle, engine revs, and the accelerator has to be released before the transmission catches up.dealer has been contacted, says this condition is normal.*ml

Clock spring on vehicle is not working properly which resulted in is that the air bag has been turned off.also the cruise control has been shut off.contacted dealer, and the dealer replaced the parts.

Multiple elect. Problems with car: (3) alternators, wire harness(#12), replaced main computer, (3) map sensors, (1) o2 sensor, cruise control inoperable

The cruise-control caused the vehicle to accelerate well past the set speed and could usually only be reset by shutting off the engine.the service dept. (mckinney dodge, easley s.c.) believes the cause to be bent accelerator and speed control cables.if so, the design must be defective as the only work ever done near this area of the engine compartment was replacement of the battery several months ago.whether the cables were bent during the battery replacement, during manufacture, or somewhere in between, the tight radius of these cables without any protection would seem to be a major design flaw.with the accelerator stuck, stopping the vehicle is difficult (particularly trying to keep the brakes from fading out) and ultimately requires the engine to be shut off.

Airbag light was on, and cruise control stopped working.

Airbag sensor light stays illuminated while driving. Also, cruise control is inoperable, and intermittentlyhorn assembly is inoperable.dealer has been notified.possible clockspring failure.

Air bag light comes / cruise control fails to work, and horn cannot be used. Problem happens only when engine starts, and isintermittent. The cruise control and the horn failures caused by clock spring assembly and was replaced.

While foot is on brake pedal, the vehicle surges forward almost causing a collision.

Air bag light has come on and stayed on.also, hornfailed to work, and cruise control operated randomly. Possible clockspring failure.

Horn, airbag, and cruise control inoperable

When making a left or right turnengine races, buttransmission fails to engage. Also, transmission only functions properly when it is in reverse or first gear.dealer has replaced transmission five times, which has not corrected problem. Front brakes failed twice.

Dt:the vehicle speed control stuck at 45 mph on september 2, 2005.the consumer was able to get the vehicle to stop by turning the key off.the consumer unhooked the cruise control cable, and he has not had any more problems since this.when the mechanic looked at the vehicle he found that one of the cable strandsbroke.the consumer is currently waiting for the replacement part.

Airbag light stays on while driving most of the time.horn and cruise control has stopped working completely.

Takata recall, serpentine belt has shredded at least six times and just came off three times ,tensioner replaced three times, idler pulley twice, when belt shreds wires sever and van stops abruptly, windshield wipers stop abruptly hesitating before resuming, sway bar links need replaced,o2sensors check engine light to come on,cvaxles failing replaced right twice, hub assembly and brake calipers miss aligned, engine mounts failed and needed, replaced, airbag and abs lights on dashboard panel fuse blowing, taillights possible short causing brake light to fail, battery needing to be disconnected. To save battery from dyeing due to brake lights staying on constantly, transmission jerking and hesitating in reverse and first gear, passenger side window not operating possible problem, back windows open but will not always shut, horn not working, replaced fuel pump due to gas leak, when braking van lurches forward, front end shakes, tie bar ends replaced, heater blows cold on passenger side andnot cooling, most problems occurred while driving, replaced stop brake switch, brake light drivers side illuminated, but not when brake petal pushed, transmission leaking by cvaxel, turn signals and panels inside by dash not always operating, only when negative terminal is readjustment, lights flashing as if panic mode was activated when car is not on,rattling. Sound from front of van possible cv axel or suspension.

Ventilation system only functions on high setting.also, this has caused poor visibility when trying to defrost the windshield. Dealer has not been able to determine the problem.

Consumerwas driving 25 mph when she noticed smoke coming from windshield defroster. It was hot enough to burn her fingers when she touchedwindshield.after a couple of minutes, windshield cracked, 3 cracks about 1 foot long.dealer stated defroster was faulty, and needed to be replaced.

While driving on highwayleft rear passenger window just shattered and popped out of vehicle.

Consumer was driving vehicle on the street at approximately 20-25 mph; all of sudden passenger's side door window shattered.no sign of projectile was found. Dealer notified.

Air conditioning system: evaporator was replaced 3 times so far, first time being under 3 year warranty.service engine light stays on all the time now, even after being diagnosed with "no problems" and being reset.lately, the windows won't go up and down until the car is stopped and restarted. Same thing with the speedometer and the tachometer. They just "go dead".

Wipers activate when turned off(on sunny days) and do not work in intermittent mode.

Wipers come on without activating- during normal driving

1997 plymouth grand voyager windshield wipers start on there own and sometimes cease to funtion when switched on! the wiper wear excessively due to starting on dry glass. Can be a hazard if wipers fail to funtion when needed.had mechanic checked motor and wiring and in formed that it coundbe the body control module but it is a defect from the manufacture a new one could result in the same problem at a cost of over $500.00!checked on internet and found that this seems to be a common problem with this year vehicle

Vehicle wasn't going in gear. Also, windshield wipers would go off intermittently.

Consumer states that while drivingin the rain windshield wipers would work intermittently.dealer notified.

Windshield wipers go on and off at random.it can be one time or several times.it is very inconvenient.this has been going on since we purchased the used vehicle in 2000.

Windshield wipers only works on low speed, and can sometimes lock up.

Major inconvenience, wipers activate automatically approx. Every 100 miles

Windshield wipers come on intermittently when in off position. Consumer has to turn wipers on then off. Vehicle not taken to dealer.
