Oil pan design defect caused initial report ..see odi 701385..reported nov 1998 when oil pan wore thru and developed slow oil leak and oil pressure warning light failed resulting in engine seizingnecesitating rebuild at aprx $3700.. At 5114 miles later(52900) while on hoist, owner checked pan and found that the pan has again worn almost through from road abrasions during just normal operation with occasional dragging on speed bumbs ,driveway inclines ,road gutters on drive in etc. If continues to wear at current rate expect failure on the new replacement pan in 2500-5000 miles.this pan area immediately below oil drain plug is totally unprotected and is 1st area of impact when car dips for any reason enough to make contact with road. It according to the mechanic at northglenn dodge when showed to him on hoist and ask..is a common problem with the breeze and seen alot.i intend to pursue problem directly with plymouth factory. Dt: with no warning the car just shuts offwhile driving and in all weather conditions. Problem is in the electrical system.has had battery recharged and was told by manufacturer to get an electronic analysis test on the vehicle but the test is not free.
There is excessive vibration in the steering wheel. Dealer cannot repair.in addition, there is a forward lunging when slowing to a stop/replaced broken motor mount/broken alternator bolt/sensor for idle/rack and pinion steering/head gasket/exhaust leak due to loose bolts and broken power steering cap.
Front end noise when going over minor bumps.told many times that it was justmy struts and it was normal.now have been told the real problems after warranty expired at a cost to me.
While the windshield wipers are in use they would malfunction and be inoperative which may cause visual difficulty and may result in an accident.been to dealer several times, andfixedthe electronic control module, but the problem is reoccurring. Currently, dealer said it is the fuse block panel. Please provide further information.
When car is placed in park, the key will stick in the ignition.motor turns off, but inside functions stay on (mileage lights, radio/clock) and key will not turn all the way to take it out.after trying over and over, something will "give" in the ignition, and the key will finally come out.also, when you lock the doors, sometimes the power lock motor will make a "groaning-whining" noise, and not all of the doors will lock.these problems have been going on since shortly after purchase.

Car racing at idle, car wanted to lunge forward while brakes applied.finally repaired after forth trip to service department.also, faulty wiring.
The head gasket was really the problem that i have the biggest beef about. I have had an oil leak since at least august 2002 and the mechanic that i've been taking my car to has replaced the oil pressure switch twice and most recently the cam shaft switch. At the last repair, he indicated that i had a torn head gasket, a very common problem with my model of car. I made an appointment with the local chrysler dealer and then contacted chrysler about some monetary assistance with this repair. Chrysler confirmed the problem with the dealer and then did nothing for two days until i called back and found out that the decision rested in the regional manager's hands who was out of town on vacation for 4 more days. I contacted chrysler again and escallated the decision through a few levels of management and found that my request had been denied due to the age of the car and its mileage. This irritates me for several reasons. Head gaskets are supposed to have a much longer life span that 72k miles. This is a well documented defect with the car i have and i feel that a recall is in order. From what i've read on the internet, many breeze/neon owners have had success convincing chrysler to pay for some of the repair. I brought my car in on tuesday night and it wasn't until the end of the day on thursday that chrysler made their decision. In the meantime, the mechanic did not repair the problem because he was waiting on the response from chrysler. Hence, i was out of the use of my car an additional two days. Additionally, i've already incurred about $400 in expenses most likely related to this head gasket from previous repairs to my oil leak problem. It's a shame all this happened because i was pretty pleased with the car up until i discovered this problem.
Car overheated and engine blew out.check engine and engine temp warning light did not come on.temp gauge did not register hot. Need to replace engine.
The head gasket is leaking oil. The dealership has been contacted. Ph
The oil constantly leaks. The head gasket has been replaced three times.(1998, 2000, 2002). The head gasket is now worn again and needs to be replaced.the timing belt replaced once due to the oil leaking on it.now the timing belt needs to be replaced again
Car leaks a mocha/chocolate color fluid. Then overheated after being driven about 1.5 miles . I added coolant to bottle and 1 qt oil.temp gauge was still up after idling for 5-6 minutes. My mechanic examined vehicle and said liquid is oil mixed with water and there is oil in radiator.i contacted chrysler corp and they instructed me to take to nearest dealer (michael stead hilltop, richmond, ca) for diagnosis ($89) by service dept.my mechanic suspects blown head gasket or cracked block (?).
I acquired a 1996 plymouth breeze in march of 2002.the day after i got the car, the "check engine" light came on.since then, the light has come one a total of 4 times.each time it has been fixed or looked at, the o2 sensor was the cause of the problem.on halloween 2002, i took my car in to get a routine oil change and to find out the cause of a ticking sound.the auto center (that was doing my oil change) said it was a rod bearing, but when i took the car to the dealership, they said that it was a flywheel.the car was repaired and 2 days after i pick up the car, the "check engine" light comes on for the 4th time.i am taking the car to the dealership and praying that this is the last time i will have to make any repairs for the same thing!!!
1996 plymouth breeze had something break from the vehicle. The consumer stated the vehicle stalled and caught fire after coming to a rest on the shoulder.the cause of the fire was undetermined. (ohio traffic crash report)
I purchased my 1996 plymouth breeze in april of 1998 with 33,000 miles on it and it currently has 115,000 miles on it.the initial signs of problems begin at 50,000 miles with an oil leak no one could seem to fix (not even the dealership).within a span of 82, 000 miles: i have had to replace the head gasket twice at 54,000 and 113,000 ($1000), i have had two major tune-ups at 60,000 and 92,000 miles ($500), i have had all sensors replaced at 101,000 miles ($1500), i have had three major brake jobs within 18 months ($1800), i had to replace the radiator ($250), i had to have the catalytic converter replaced at 75,000 miles ($350), i had to have a new transmission at 95,000 miles ($1500), ive had numerous repairs based on the readouts from the computer ($600+),replaced the oil pan gasket but it still leaks ($150)the window seals leak when it rains (never tried to fix)(this car sat in my driveway almost all of 2002 because i could not afford the repairs)after all of my futile attempts to keep my transportation operable, its currently sitting in my driveway with the following problems:it cuts off while driving, the engine revs up and down when idle, there is a severe oil leak that no one can seem to fix,the engine light stays on no matter what repairs are done, the factory radio, the speedometer, and the mileage gauge, no longer work.there is absolutely no pickup when driving up hills, when you turn the ac on there is an unbearable horrible rattling noise and the car loses an obscene amount of power and feels as though its going to cut off, theres a scowling noise when you turn the steering wheel left to rightit takes 15 minutes in order for the heater to blow out warm air.and i still owe $6,000 on this vehicle.

I'm so disappointed in this car.i bought it new in 1996, and it's been constant problems since i did.the first time the head gasket went out, the car was still under warranty, but has gone out twice since then.i've spent so much money on repairs, that i could have bought a whole new car if you add it all up.the brakes are always squeeking and wearing out quickly.whenever one thing goes wrong, it's quickly followed by several other problems.my transmission had a massive leak last year (2001) that took the dealer two times to fix.but now it's leaking again.i went and bought a new kia two days ago--but i'm reluctant to try and sell this lemon to anybody.it has no trade in value whatsoever.now that i'm aware of the major head gasket problems, i wonder if there's any sort of class action lawsuit against the makers of plymouth?i want my money back!!!

On 2/8/00, noticed a significant amount of oil on my driveway under the breeze.checked oil--over a quart low.refilled oil and had the car checked the next day.trusted mechanic said head gasket was leaking badly.took to local chrysler-plymouth dealer (ladd-hanford of lebanon, pa).they replaced head gasket for $50 deductible.called chrysler consumer hotline, but chrysler refused to answer any questions about service history of 1996 breeze.my search for information led me to this web site, where i discovered 1996 breeze has had significant problems.is this a poor car to own?

Replaced engine head gasket, was informed that this is common on vehicles with aluminum heads and cast iron blocks. Vehicle does not even have 20,000 miles on it. This will probably happen again and again, was told by service tech that there is no guarantee because of the materials used.
Originally reported trouble to local dealership and they advised me that the problem was not covered by warranty and that i should continue to replace lost oil and that it was not worth fixing because i would probably want to trade it in.then when i schedualed to have it fixed, about 9 months later, they advised me that they would have never told me that and that it was covered under warrenty.by that time of coarse i was out of milage warrenty.i went ahead and sent it in to have the head gasket repared or replaced whatever needed to be done.they told me at that time that there was a national back order on the part so i did not recieve my vehicle back for over a month. Then when i did get it back i noticed that it was still leaking oil so i called imediately.it took them 2 weeks to get it back in only to tell me what i already new that the head gasket was leaking and it need to be replaced.i called them ever day to check on the progress and what they finally told me was that there was a redesign on the gaskets because the original one had a defect but there was no recall on them and that the first one that they replaced was still the old design so they would replace it at no charge with the new design but when i finally got my car back it was still leaking!so far i am out of over a $1000.00 in repair and that is not even counting the cost of rental cars.

Oil noticed on ground under vehicle. Mechanic says head gasket is leaking oil out of engine. Head gasket failure is causing oil to be leaked onto ground which causes ecological damage to our environment per epa. This web site documents this as a trend for this platform of plymouth vehicle. There must be tens of thousands of gallons of petroleum oil being spilled into our environment by these vehicles, maybe more. These vehicles are injuring us all and should no longer be used unless properly and permanently fixed.

Engine head gasket blew.nlm
I have been having problems with oil dripping from my 1996 plymouth breeze. I took it to my mechanic, who told me that the problem was a bad head gasket. I was told by him that plymouth was have a problem with that vehicle and that should be a recall item. I contacted chrysler about my problem and they advised that it wasn't a recalled problem, and it never will be. For them to fix it ,it will cost upwards of 2,000 dollars. I have tried to reason with them, but couldn't get anywhere with them. The problem is very messy for my driveway, and probably a safety concern the more i drive it on the road. I hope nhtsa puts our concerns to the forfront and gets chrysler to address our situation and finallyput the problem on the recall list. As a fan of the chrsyler product and buyer, i hope that something can be done. Frank cortez

Gear sticks between park and reverse when shifting to park, causing vehicle to roll backwards.dealer has acknowledged there is indeed a problem.

Recall notice regarding the transaxle floor shifter ignition interlock system on the 1996 plymouth breeze.*mrthe vehicle was taken tot he dealer but the refused to repair the vehicle under the r recall due to vin.
On november 15th, 1998, my husband was driving our plymouth breeze on his way to work. While driving he heard several terrible, loud noises coming from under the hood and immediately loss power. The vehicle was towed to aamco transmittions. Aamco transmittions found the problem to be, the differental pin worked its way out of place, catching itself on metal. The differential pin split into three pieces (aamco believes). The differential pin made several 3 inch holes in the casing of the transmission. The transmission was contaminated and destroyed. The solution, to replace the complete transmission. The plymouth breeze in this report has not ever been serviced for problems other than recalls. We believe the damage started to begin while the car was still in its warranty life. We have spoken to two chrysler engineers, two transmission specialists, and three chrylser dealership employees. Their opinion is the same. They all believe that it takes time for this type of failure to occur. And not one of the specialists have ever seen this problem with a car less than 100,000 miles driven! we have contacted chrylser for a refund of the total cost of the replacement of our plymouth breeze's new transmittion.
When applying the brakes there is a noise which indicates more wear and tear on the braking system.dealer said they fixed the problem. Problem still exists. Transmission started having a loud rattle when checked out car is leaking transmission fluid and will need to have transmission replaced. I do not feel that the transmission should go out in 59,000 miles. I also feel that the dealer should have found that the car was leaking transmission fluid in the 2 times that i had the vehicle in, thiswas veryobvious problem if they had checked it out properly.

1996 plymouth breeze 2.0 engine leaks extreme amounts of oil from area where upper, lower, and front seal come together. Not the seal itself. Also seems to run hot. Doors are rusty and hard to close.
Driver's side door sticks due to misalignment.
Both rear doors squeak when opened and closed; grease has to be applied monthly for them to function.
Many problems with electronic lock continuing to run, door squeaking and hard to open , trunk latch not working.all these problems have been repaired many times and i continue to have same problems.
Trunk leaked, consumer purchased a new trunk seal and installed it, the leak went away.

This vehicle has been nothing but problems since day one.currently i'm looking at replacing the whole rack in the front end of the vehicle!!my car is 5 years old has been maintained properly and is my family sedan.i am a 33 year old mother and have never done anything to abuse or neglect this vehicle.it leaks oil,the door seals don't line up properly on the back doors and it just seems like it won't last the term of my loan i took out to buy this vehicle in the first place.i am so disgusted with chrysler manufacturing such a lemon and turning around and selling it to hapless victims.preying on families that can barely afford there vehicles.when that salesman looked into my 18 month old daughters eyes at the time did it even matter to him that he might be putting her life in danger by selling her parents a poorly designed and built car?obviously not.unfortunately for people like myself i cannot afford to take them to court for selling me this lemon and needing to work every day to get by i needed this vehicle.i have to drive it every day.it's a shame that chrysler has ruined another american families opinion on american made vehicles because i will never buy american for vehicles again.thank you for your time.

Engine light failure.
Approximately three weeks ago, after making a left turn, i noticed the steering wheel became difficult to turn.the problem would disappear after backing up. And was not always consistent. I brought it into my garage who checked the belts and fluid. They reported everything was fine.yesterday (2/22) leaving work i was making a left turn out of the parking lot into the exit lane, and lost all steering ability. Another employee stopped to see if i needed help. When i told him i lost the steering again and asked if he could look.when i opened my door to get out, from his height he could see something sticking out underneath the clutch area. He reached down and saw that a chunk of the cloth mat had been sucked up into the steering column at the base of the floor and was wrapped freezing the steering.it took him a while, but he was eventually able to free it.almost the entire, heavy cloth mat was a giant ball wrapped by the column. I was lucky that it happened on the company campus only moving a few miles an hour, and not up on interstate 78 i travel everyday at 55 miles an hour when the steering completely froze.

While the windshield wipers are in use they would malfunction and be inoperative which may cause visual difficulty and may result in an accident.been to dealer several times, andfixedthe electronic control module, but the problem is reoccurring. Currently, dealer said it is the fuse block panel. Please provide further information.
