No summary listed for above vehicle.

I have had numerous problems with this car since i purchased it. The power sliding side door has benn repaired 2 or 3 times and still works intermittently. The headlights have been repaced once and repaired once and they now have water inside causing the lights to perform poorly. The air bag warning light was repaired at a cost of $80 due to corrosion causing the light to come on. The check engine light comes on if you drive over 100 miles then eventually goes off. Now, the major problem is that i have been told by my mechanic that i have a blown head gasket or cracked block which is causing antifreeze to leak into my oil. There is a possibility that the engine needs replaced. I noted numerous instances of blown head gaskets on gm message boards. This seems to be an ongoing problem. I contacted gm and received no offer of help. The request # given to me was 06214553. This is the 7th or 8th gm vehicle i have owned and have never had any problems. This one has been nothing but a problem.does this classify as a "lemon"? any help would be appreciated.

Seat belts in the second row captain chairs released in a car accident (roll over). Seat belt in the front passenger side expanded still causing the passenger to be thrown around in the roll over. Airbags didn't deploy! -olds has been notified.

Airbag light is intermittent. As the vehicle starts, the computer runs through it's checks, every now and then the airbag light illuminates and stays on until the vehicle is shut off and re-started. There is no warning when the light will stay on or turn off during start-up. This has been an on-going issue with this vehicle.

Passenger side side airbag deployed upon closing door. This is located in the drivers seat and is also called a side curtain air bag. Would like investigated by gm. This vehicle does have a sdm module that should have data they could retreave. Airbag has not been repaced as of yet. Interior molding was damaged due to impact with air bag. Vehicle was running and in park.

The metal frame seat bolster on the driver's side in my 1998 oldsmobile silhouette has broken through the foam cusion and has begun to damage the leather.i am concerned that if this vehicle were in an accident the metal would impale the driver.i have contacted general motors several times only for them to tell me someone would have to be injured before they would recongnize this as a problem.a relative has the exact same mini-van (year and model) and is experiencing the same problem.i have received an estimate of repair from an independent auto upholstery shop and found it interesting that when i told the gentleman what type of vehicle it was he knew exactly what the problem was prior to looking at the vehicle.he indicated that he has repaired many of these.we also found out that general motors has redesigned the drivers and passengers seats in the silhouette, either providing more seat frame protection or removing the metal portion that is protruding from my vehicle.

Continuous overheating of the controls for the radio/air conditioner/heater/cd player.

Within several days of each repair, the compressor just stops working. According to the dealer, the problem is a short in the electrical system which they are unable to locate and repair properly. After three to five hours of waiting each time, all they have done is to replace the blown fuse which promptly blows again within a few days.

Consumer stated the alternator and battery were replaced, and also the ignition was overhauled.

While driving van the temperature gauge showed hot and heater stopped blowing hot air few minutes later it cooled back down and started blowing warm air and it continued to do that over and over put a thermostat in it and it did not help it continued to do the same thing it is full of water still not blowing any warm air out and steaming out the exhaust.

We purchased a van in good working order in 04/2006.it was used previously by one owner since being purchased new.in november 2007- it began overheating and losing coolant.the diagnosis is now replacement of head gasket and possible intake manifold gasket.this is a very common problem with this particular engine.gm has refused to help their consumers in any way if there is no warranty.as with all problems these could fail due to normal wear and tear, mileage, and or age.i do not believe this to be the case in numerous complaints including my own!

Our 1998 oldsmobile silhouette has 45000 miles and needs a new $5000 engine. It has been maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions and the engine has been destroyed by a intake manifold gasket leak which allows corrosive dexcool coolant to leach into the engine. There are many other victims of this flaw, and details of the problem are available at: http://www.cartrackers.com/forums/live/yourlemon/231.html http://www.petitiononline.com/gmcnsmrs/petition.html http://www.geocities.com/gm_intake/ http://www.gm-v6lemons.com/ we were initially told by koons chevroloet in vienna, va that we needed to replace our engine because of antifreeze leaking into the engine.this was caused by the defective intake manifold gasket.when we furnished them withthe information on the defect, a service rep then told us that the'd work with gm to see what the could do for us.they came back with "we'll replace your engine".we agreed to that remedy and when we called to see if the work on our car was completed, the service rep, said "by the way, we didn't replace the engine we rebuilt it."we were very dismayed by the fact that they misrepresented what they said they would do and proceeded to do the work without our authorization.we were about to pull the car from that dealer to go get a second opinion.any way the work was done with no charge to us.we complained to gm customer service and after much negotiation, they offered us an extended warranty on the entire engine.subsequent to that we took the car to farrish of fairfax in fairfax, va to inspect the work that was done at koons.they said it looked ok.well, since then, as recent as this week the "low coolant" light has lit up on the dash.this was the precursor to our problem in the beginning.we now have an appointment to bring the car back to farrish.it seems that the fix was not adequate, but we'll let you know.

Consumer stated that while driving, the waterpump would leak. Dealer notified. *ph

A defect in the intake manifold of my 1998 olds silhouette van caused the engine to fail.this failure occurred while my pregnant wife (3 days past her due date) was driving with our 5 yr old son.while driving 40 mph on a high traffic road, the engine failed.this could have caused a serious accident/injury.other motorists in her vicinity saw the problem and avoided a collision.

The contact owns a 1998 oldsmobile silhouette. During a routine inspection, a technician stated that there was an abnormal oil leak. The oil leakage increases the risk of an engine compartment fire. No repairs were made at the time of inspection. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 86,000.

Engine overheats due to coolant leak cause by faulty intake gasket.

Complete engine replacement, 3.4l 6cyc minivan.

My 1998 old silhouette had intake manifold gasket replaced at 69, 000 miles and then 8 months at 73 000 mile my cam broke in half while i was driving at 25 to 30 mph unknown why or how much more damage is done at this time. Investigator is coming out to check what had happen .

My 1998 olds minivan started to over heat while my wife was transporting our children and foster children. When this happens she must pull over to let the engine cool creating a safety hazard. The oldsmobile dealer says the intake gasket is leaking coolant and the repair cost is over $600. I have learned this is manufacturing defect that gm has had many complaints on.

Engine:cam shaft broken in two and bent rods. Other:headlight switch shorted out.

Failed intake manifold gasket.the intake manifold gasket on my 3.4ltr v6 engine has failed and is leaking coolant.

Consumer stated the water pump failed.* yh

Overheating/cooloing system/intake gasket failure on a 1998 oldmobile sillhoette van with a 3.4 ltr v-6 engine.low coolant light first came on about march 12th, 2003 during a long cross-country trip. Engine not overheating so i purchased some dex-cool to add to system. No visible leaks.engine overheats in february of 2004. Changed thermostat assuming it to be problem (no heat but hot engine). There were no other warning lights. Weeks past and system not working properly but not getting overheated. Finally taken to mechanic were he immediately suggested the intake manifold gasket as a common prolem. Van taken to gm dealer for several repairs ($1700) including intake manifold gaskets, water pump, complete cooling system dex-cool flush and other maintenance. We drove the van about 30 miles and experienced another severe overheating episode. The van was towed back to the dealer and i began doing some research on the internet. Research led me to this site. It is obvious this is no isolated incident and i feel general motors has been grosely negligent in accepting resposibility.

Vehicle has an odorand heater was not working. Oil and antifreeze mixed together.took to dealer, and dealer indicated had a blown head gasket.odor could probable be antifreeze.

Faulty intake gasket on 98 oldsmobile silhouette (same as chevrolet venture).engine v6 3400.78000 miles.

Began to see coolant pooling on the intake manifold assembly, took the vehicle in to find that the intake manifold gasket needed to be replaced.should have been a warranty item. Did not damage engine, i was lucky and spotted the situation early.

Coolant leaked from gasket into engine degrading oil and resulted in extensive damage and cost. The downgrading began with this event. Il pump eventually clogged resulting in low oil pressure & repaired again. Eventually, engine self destructed, while on freeway, loosing power steering and power brakes resulting in near accident while exiting freeway. Then had to rent a chrysler van to escape oncoming hurricane frances. This is more expense and aggrivation. All because of a faulty gasket leaking coolant into engine. This looks like neglegent design on gms part resulting in a catastrophic failure which could have resulted in death.

Faulty intake manifold on 1998 oldsmobile silhouette has caused an engine failure.this failure occurred while my pregnant wife (3 days past due) was driving our 5 yr old son home from the dentist.she was driving 40 mph on a high traffic road when the engine failed!this sudden engine failure could have caused a serious accident.

Engine stops and goes dead.when this happens there are no brakes, no steering, the vehicle goes dead with no indication, no matter what speed when driving.the dealer had replaced the fuel injection system along with a variety of replacement to several other parts. After arriving back home in less than one week, the engine was dead again. (occurred approximately seven or eight times on the way. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

The consumer stated the intake manifold gasket failed without warning. As a result the transmission fluid and oil began to mix together, which caused the engine to stall. Please provide additional information.

The following letter (combined message forum posting & letter to gm of mine) represents the main points in my complaint involving an intake gasket manifold leak in our 1998 oldsmobile silhouette which we've since repaired for approximately $900.00:after recently writing a lengthy complaint letter to oldsmobile customer service (explaining how i was trying a gm product for the first time after being dissatisfied with chrysler products for the past 10 years) and after 2 weeks of phone tag with 2 gm customer service reps i was finally told that because i wasn't the original owner, bought it with relatively high mileage (50k mi) and didn't have an extended warranty gm is not going to assist with the repair of my intake manifold gasket problem.i summarized by saying, "so, you're saying that gm doesn't care what 2nd owners of gm vehicles think about gm?you don't care that i won't buy another gm product?"the rep. Responded "that's your choice." he went on to say "we don't know how the previous owner maintained the vehicle...." and i responded saying "there are tsb's out there on this problem, over 1500 people who've signed an online petition and gm dealer service techs who immediately point out the problem to owners who go in for totally unrelated service; you can't tell me that gm doesn't know this is a product defect."he didn't respond. My vehicle is now consuming about 16 oz. Of coolant every 150 miles driven.the rep. Said i shouldn't be driving it at all; easy to say if you could afford to go out and replace it or repair it; not a very good option for our family now.an extensive web search on ??olds silhouette and intake manifold leak?? has produced many stories of exactly the same problem with other owners of this vehicle in the same year. I request that this problem be repaired free of charge as soon as possible to avoid further damage to engine components.

While driving at 40 mph the vehicle will stall unexpectedly which may of result inan accident.been to dlr 3 times. Dealer replaced ignitionmodule.dealer cannot determine problem.cause unknown.please provide further details.

When traveling at 5o mph the vehicle will cut off withoutprior warning, causing loss of power steering and loss of control.alsothe problem occurred on a number of times. Consumer has contacted the dealer.

When driving at any speed the vehicle stalls and cuts off, and sometimes vehicle would start backing up.

The seperntine belt failed.nlm

The serpentine belt was cracked and worn at 40k miles.nlm

During wet road/weather conditionspower assisted steering failed. Dealership installed a water deflector plate to prevent water from contactingpower steering belt.however, while traveling at approximately 25 to 30 mph in a rain storm, power steering failed, andbelt foralternator slipped which caused light forbattery on the dash board to come on. Dealership has been contacted, and ownerwas informed that nothing could be done for this problem. The dealer indicated that the wet conditions caused a belt to slip from the alternator and disabled the alternator.

When driving thru puddles during rain, water splashes on the serpentine accessory drive belt , causing the power steering pump pulley to slip and loss of steering control. The service manager a the dealership where i bought the van said there was no way to tighten the belt. This has happened four times and luckely the speed has been slow and the steering came back after a few seconds.

With front wheel drive vehicle making a right turn and driving over a puddle , water will splash fromwheel and get into the serpentine belt, causingsteering wheel to lock up. Dealer claimed this was normal.ak

I have just found out that my olds silhouette has a coolant leak in the intake manifold withh only 50000 miles on the odometer. To my discuss i was informed that this is a very common and "predictable" failer. I hope that it has not caused any further damage to my engine. It would have been in the least a reasonable action on behalf of gm to give owners of their vehicles a heads up on this all to common defect.

Dt*:the contact stated the low coolant light illuminated and the vehicle was not warming up properly.the dealership determined the antifreeze was leaking into the oil.the manifold gasket was replaced.when the problem returned the manifold gasket was replaced a second time. Two other members of contact's family had the same things go wrong with their vehicles. The dealer won't help the contact to defray the expenses because he used an independent mechanic that once worked at the dealership.there weren't too many dealerships in the contact's area. Also, thecontact knew many people who had similar engine problems.

Dt: contacttook vehicle to a service dealer for routine maintenance and they replaced the lower intake manifold to stop the coolant leak. The consumer statedvehicle was still leaking gasoline and coolant.the consumer did not want to have this problem repaired at the time of the routine visit.the consumer stated the service dealer had to keep the vehicle for about a month.

The outside temperature indicator on the overhead panel gives incorrect readings, the consumer was not happy about the cost of repair and believes that this component should have been covered under warranty.nlm

The cable that holds the spare tire broke, causing the tire to drop to the pavement. The van was parked in the driveway when this happened.van was taken to the dealership, where the cable was repaired. Consumer waiting for a response from gm. *ml

Right/left head lamp assembly fogged up and water beads formed o the inside.*tc

Headlamps and fog lamps get condensation in them and is removing the reflective coating. I have another vehicle, same year, make and model that has done and is doing the same thing again. I replaced all of the front end lenses (headlamp and foglamp) on this vehicle at a substantial cost. The dealer states that this is common for this vehicle?

Water is leaking down intoheadlights and fog lights. Head lights havebeen replaced twice. Lining toseal unit is being destroyed. Water damage is causinglights not to reflect. Dealer has been contacted, but no response to the problem.consumer states there is a design defect, the light modules are not sealed and moisture gets in and can not escape through small drain holes, resulting in electric connections failing and the reflective material in the module fails, consumer also feels the high humidity in the area exaggerates the problem, oldsmobile refuses to make an adjustment.

Head lights filled with condensation and makes night driving difficult

Headlights are too dim on low beams.

Dt:the contact stated the headlightsfogged up, causing poor visibility.the vehicle was taken to the dealership.and they could take the headlights apart and blow air into them.no repairs have been madedue to theexpense.

Headlight lens cover fell off. Adhesive holding covers has dried and cracked. Headlights frequently have moisture problems due to leaks in adhesive holding covers. I have been told this is a common problem with 1997-current general motors mini vans. Dealer declined to replace headlight assembly. Contacted oldsmobile 1-800-442-6537. Oldsmobile customer service offered 50% discount on purchase of replacement parts. I believe product itself is defective. I have found numerous complaints on this website citing this same problem. I do not foresee replacing current headlights as solution to problem. I believe replacement lenses will also fall off when adhesive deteriorates.

The glue holding the headlight lens on dries out. Right lens fell off in 3/2003. Left lens fell off in august 2003. Lens is not replaceable and entire assembly must be purchased for $140 from dealer. The bulb will fail almost immediately when exposed to the elements.*la

Headlights are inadequate for rural driving.dealer has tried to adjusting without any improvement.

The headlight lens covers fell off of the vehicle.this was the second occurrence for this problem.dealer recommended that consumer purchase the entire set to rectify the problem.

Consumer stated passenger's side headlight lens popped off.

The headlamps on this vehicle and the chevrolet and pontiac equivilants fill with water or get moisture in them.this causes theheadlights to short out.both headlights have failed on two occasions and one headlight at present on my vehicle.voss village has said they have seen this problem on numerous occasions.danielle garwin of gm oldsmobile said that gm is aware of the problem, but have not corrected the situation on vehicles they are currently manufacturing.gm dealers want $600.00 to replace the headlights with the same healightsthat the problem exists in.i am told customers are correcting the problem by drilling a hole in the bottom of the headlights.i maintain that this is a safety hazard as you do not know when this may occur as you are driving in the dark.gm is not concerned with the safety issuethey only want to know if your car is under warranty.they obviously have no plans to change the "poor design" (which it is called by a service person at white allen chevrolet). Mr. Steve smargon of gm olds division stated to me that the headlamps leak because "they were not tight enough".i feel several employees of gm or gm dealershp are definitely aware of the problem, but will not change design or fix for a vehicle out of warranty.i guess someone must die to get their attention.thank you for your attention to this matter.

I have two 1998 olds silhouette's and both have moisture build up in them. I have replaced the two lens housing on one of the vehicles only to have the moisture build up again. This was done after a bulb went out due to the moisture. On the second vehicle i brought this to the attention of the dealer and they stated it was a common problem on this vehicle and was not a safety hazard. Now i am thinking of contacting my attorney to look into this matter. I don't want to wait for an accident to occur or a death to result from such a defect. I feel this is a safety hazard because when i take the vehicle in for the annual state safety inspection they always check the head light condition.so headlight condition is a safety concern. Just like the tire incident with ford...does oldsmobile/gm want numerous law suits over this major problem...i think not!

Right front headlight lens is gone.this resulted in the headlight shattering due to no protection on the light bulb.

As i was accelerating into the fast lane on a freeway in diamond bar ca the accelerator cable broke and the motor did not slow down.the brakes were not working properly and it was like stepping on a brick.they barely responded.i made it to an off-ramp, shifted into neutral.the van slowed down but would not stop.i went up on the curb to try and slow it down more and to get around the cars waiting at the light at the bottom of the off-ramp.by going up on the curb i was able to maneuver around the cars without hitting anyone and missing light poles.i kept shifting from neutral to drive to get the van to the side street and into the parking lot of a car repair.when i was safely in the parking lot i shifted into park and turned off the motor.the mechanics at the repair shop suggested i report the incident since the accelerator didn't react in the way it should have. It was only my presence of mind and the angel on my shoulder that kept me from injuring others and being injured.everyone i have spoken to that knows anything about the accelerator cable has told me that it shouldn't happen the way it did. While traveling at 70 mph, hood started to shake, hood came unlatched, but did not fly up. There may be a defect with release button.

Parking brake cable had pulled loose from the clip that holds it to the rear axle, allowing it to wear against the rear shock absorber.this caused a weak spot in the rubber boot that holds compressed air for the load levelling function.this caused the boot to rupture as the vehicle was being loaded, and the load levelling system was pumping up the shocks.since this was an ongoing wear process, it could have caused a failure at highway speed with the vehicle heavily loaded, causing a loss of control to the vehicle.poor fitup between the cable and the axle mounts appears to be a contributing factor, as it springs the cable in a direction that may cause the separation from its clip.
