I recently purchased a 1991 oldsmobile cutlass supreme.i had to take it back to the dealership 2 times already because it will cut off will driving, putting myself and others at risk of serious injury or death.noone seems to know what is wrong with the car.upon further investigating using consumer automobile review sites on the web.i find that there are multiple similar complaints about this particular model or ones very similar produced by gm/oldsmobile.keep in mind that this vehicle only has 39,700 miles on it.i have a 2 year warranty, that has yet to be honored because the dealership claims they do not know what's wrong with it.i am seriously wondering if there is some type of cover up or intentional ignoring of a common mechanical defect with this and similar vehicles.please help!thank you.

Vehicle has had long history of unresolved electrical malfunctions, which eventually led to electrical fire.

Anytime the battery is disconnected, it wipes out the computer memory, causing stalling, eradic shifting, engine failure, and loss of control.this is not noticed until car is driven, and didn't appear untill traveling at 45 mph.dealer said this is part of he vehicle design and it will cost $60.00 to reprogram the computer any time that the battery is disconnected or fails.this problem can be potentially dangerous if the car fails at a high rate of speed causing very stiff steering and braking.

Alternator and alternator belt have had problems on two occasions. The alternator and alternator belt were replaced at owner's expense, dealer is not aware of the problem.

When using air conditioning, alternator goes out and kills the battery. Had 4 alternators and batteries replaced. Took to dealer who indicated engine was too big for alternator also causing engine to stall, engine cooling fan replaced, power steering pressure hose failed and replaced, rearview mirror fell off, ceiling fabric coming unglued and dashboard vent cover coming off.

While driving vehicle just stopped, and all power was lost. As soon as vehicle was taken out of drive and put into park, it would start again. This has been an ongoing problem since june of this year. Dealership was not able to determine what was cauisng this problem.cleaning the fuel system and replacing spark plugs did not correct the problem..

Distributor module computer chip replaced.

Vehicle was placed in the park position with the key in the ignition for about ten minutes when the vehicle caught fire in the steering column area of the vehicle. Consumer has yet to determine the cause of the fire.

Consumer has been experiencing problems with electrical system.while driving noticed smoke coming from hood.the manufacturer has yet to be contacted.

Electronic dashboard flickers off for minutes at a time.this affects the display of the speedometer, gas gauge and mileage.smoke come out of the steering column 2 years ago, and i had the signals and high beam switch repaired already.

Our olds cutlas supreme has a digital electronic dash. This entire area has a constant problem with going on and off when it is off it causes an unsafe and undesireable problem of not knowing if there is any malfunctions with the engine,cooling system,amount of fuel that is left and most important the speed that you are traveling.all of these things are each by them selves a danger to the driver and anyone following or arround the effective vehicle.

Starter failed.

While driving at speed of 15 mph, experienced under the hood fire dueto an electrical short.tt

The idle speed would run away making it difficult to control the vehicle.from a complete stop, the vehicle would accelerate to 40 mph and maintain that speed without the accelerator being touched.the ecm was replaced and the problem has not reoccurred.

This is the second electrical fire i have experienced in this vehicle this year. The first was the center console, melting down (which has been reported to you ,and the dealer has been made aware. Today, as i was sitting in the vehicle, copious amounts of choking acrid smoke billowed from under the driver's seat. What happened was the upholstery support system for the drivers seat has been breaking down untieng the wire harness which shorted out the power seat motor, catching the drivers seat on fire. Thank god there was a fire extinguisher nearby and a fresh battery in my cellular phone to call the fire department with , and i was not traveling at highway speeds at the time. This is a dangerous situation, and the owners of these cars must be notified before something terrible happens.

Intermittently vehicle stalled while driving.consumer pulled vehicle off the road.consumer has to put the vehiclein neutral and restart the vehicle. Dealership inspectedvehicle at consumer's expense of $ 1250. But the problem was not resolved.

Due to a defective engine rodthere is a knocking noise in the engine compartment which may cause a sudden loss of vehicle control.dealer had to replace the engine under 50,000 miles.please provide further information.

Head gasket failed, consumer then contacted dealer because there was an extended warranty on vehicle, dealership advised consumer they could do nothing until they received approval from manufacturer, consumer then contacted manufacturer and was advised that due to the age of the vehicle they would not be able to assist in spite of the 70,000 extended warranty ( daughter on behalf of father-joseph beleski).

The safety spring under the latch hook of the automatic safety belt, when bumped, pulls out from the latch hook. This prevents the child seat from being restraint. Dealer has replaced belts twice, problem still exists.

Consumer was driving vehicle.went to lean over, defect within automatic shoulder belt caused the seatbelt to roll out without warning,resulting in loss of protection.

Seat belt on drivers side will not retract. I'm a disabled person, and husband has been deployed for a year or more, and also have a 6 year old that i have to take care of. When this happened i had visited my husband where he's on standby waiting to go over seas, he had to tie my seatbelt in a knot to get it tight so it would not get in the way while driving or get caught in the door and so on and so forth. Is there anyway that your company can help me get this fixed. Money is tight and i don't have the money to fix it, and can't be without a car for a lengthy period of time. Motorbelts anchored to door are safety problems, due to the fact that if your door opens in accident, you are no longer belted in. *dsh

The owner recieved a recall letter on safety belts. She setup an appointment and was told the part was not in, this was nov, 9 she tried 4 more times. 92v003000

The consumer has been experiencing problems with the seat belts . When pulling on the seat belt, it would not retract when released.when the consumer tugged on the seat belt to try to get it to retract, the seat belt attachment fell off.the manufacturer is unaware of the problem.

Pulled the passenger shoulder/lap belt (connected to the door) over the passenger and the shoulder belt completely went limp and the lap belt remained in good working condition, the retractor was repaired,now working correctly.please describe details.

I have had many premature failures in the 9 years i have owned this vehicle of the calipers, rotors and pads on all 4 wheels.oldsmobile main customer service was no help.

Purchased car in january of 1997 and need to change calipers, rotors, and pads approx. Every 15,000 i was told that is was the caliper design and that's just what happens.

The rear calipers failed for the origional owner, they were replaced at origional dealer, they again failed shortly after i bought the car. I have replaced them twice. This is a very poor design, they don`t adjust evenly or the same each time you set the parking brake. I have called general motors and was simply brushed off. I have never owned a car with such a miserable brake system.

While driving 10 mph consumer heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front. Suddenly the vehicle lost power steering. However, consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection.mechanic determined that the cradle bolts and retainers needed to be replaced. .....all steering was lost notjust power steering. With no control, vehicle moved to the next lane. Driver had no steering, only could use brakes. I purchased a 91 oldsmobile cutlass supreme as a "demo" model from a local dealer. I was the first "titled" owner of the car. From the time i purchased the car in 92, i noticed "splitting or crackling" in the paint of the car. After a few years, it began flaking at the cracked areas and peeling. I mentioned this to the dealer where i purchased the car and took it for regularly scheduled maintenance. They informed that there was nothing they could do since there was no recall on the defect. I left it go, now its getting very bad and rust is starting to form. I am livid! i have taken very good care of the outside with regular cleaning and waxing. Nothing has helped to stop the flaking. When i wash the car with a powerful spray nozzle, it flakes of in large hunks!! please help! i can't afford to repaint the entire car! it only has 66k miles and i planned to have the car for awhile yet but the appearance is embarrassing through no fault of my own. I contacted gm a few months ago but they told me they could do nothing because i didn't contact them during the warranty period which ended approx two years ago. I told them i did contact the dealer during the warranty time but they told me nothing could be done so i left it go and just assumed they were informing me correctly. Please advise me of what i can do, if anything. I do know of other gm car owners who have had similar paint problems on their vehicles and the problem was taken care of for them. Please help if you can.

I have replaced the door handles on both the drivers side and passenger doors.this is the 3rd time on the drivers side and the passenger side door handle broke off in my hand so i have no way to get into my vehicle at all short of breaking a window just to replace yet another door handle.very poor design and very weak pot metal handles at 135.00 each time one is replaced (not including labor)this is getting rediculous.dt
