I owned a nissan xterra(02)4wd-i drove it to thelassennat'l volcanic parkin red bluff,ca,i was about 300 ft from highway 36 going to the park. It was kind of chilly and the road have some snow on it. I was going slow about 13 to 15 miles, because i'm not familiar with the road, i was thinking i'll put on four wheel drive, but i have to stop the car andtransfer it to 4wd-when i started sliding towards the mountainside,so stepped on the brakes(abs) but i kept on sliding, i did not steer it to the opposite direction,i just went where the was going which is to the right, the vehicledid not stop. It hit the the mountain sidetrees and snowthen it rolled over. My son and me were shaken and i smelled the gas so i turn the engine, it still running. We got out of the car and i can't believe that we survived the crash- we were wearing our seat belts, we got some bruise an d bumps in our head, but a week later i still feel aches and pains-my complaints are that why did our abs did not work and the airbas did not deploy? lucky enough that we were not on the side of the of the deep canyon when it happened. I alwaysmaintained that car.

Airbag indicator light started to blink during normal driving conditions.dealer was contacted.upon diagnostic reading, the said that the airbag would need to be replaced if indicator started blinking again.the light functioned properly for the rest of that day, but the light started blicking again after starting the vehicle the next day.the dealer was contacted.

One by one my 2002 nissan xterra window regulators have all failed. They have failed during inclement weather and have caused a great inconvenience and use of my time to keep getting them fixed. I know of other owners who have had the same problem. There are tons of internet sites with the same complaints. Why hasn't a recall been issued?

Problems with the car starting. First problem car died just after starting. Odometer trip and a @ b had been set back to zero and car stereo presets all erased.next morning car would not start. Waited an hour, car started. Took in they adjusted the idle.the car was fine otherwise. This was just over one month ago. Yesterday went to leave work car wouldn't start. No power then i got the radioto work. They got the car started, then shut off to see if the problem was still there. It was. Wouldn't start. Called towing, but after banging on my steering wheel, car would start. I drove to nissan who now after 9 hours three technicians can find nothing wrong and they say you can come pick up your vehicle. Unless they witness the problem there is nothing they can do. Said next time leave it alone and call them and they will have it towed.this nissan has only been service through the dealer.

My 2002 xterra engine stalls when at idle speed, it starts back but will stall almost everytime i stop at a light, stop sign or in traffic. Engine light does not come on and there is no codes. I spoke to a nissan dealership and when i asked them about a recall on the 2004 model for this problem that has to do with the ipdm relay, they said that is probably what is wrong with mine. The dealership also said there is an ongoing campaign for this issue with the 2002 model. I have already had it in the shop for this problem had spark plugs, distributor, plug wires, fuel filter ,maf sensor and the throttle body replaced $1300.00 later i still have the same problem.

The vehicle started to sputter and the abs and airbag lights started to come on.when the gears shifted up, it started to resist acceleration and losing transmission power.started to shift down and coast.pulled over to the side and the vehicle shut off.would not start back up.

The distributor has ball bearings under the solenoid and photo for cam sensor that comes apart and goes every where internally. It caused me to go off the highway and almost got hit by a trucker when it completely stopped my car with out warning of any kind on the highway. There was no sensor indicator until i turned the car off and it only registered the crankshaft sensor after the car was turned of an on to figure out what was wrong. It almost caused my whole electrical system to burn out as well. Please look into this and pull the material certifications and builds of material for the internal items of this, especially the ball bearing that came apart. This is the most common malfunctioning item on this model and year. I'm an industrial and build inspector at century fasteners corp. Please review this as it could be fatal to some one who dose not know how to control a situation like this. Please and thank you,[xxx]2002 nissan xterra and all related model engines. Engine will stall out without warning while driving. Cause unknown.

The dashboard lights, headlights all went off at night while the vehicle was beingdriven.the consumer pulled off the road, replaced a fuse and continued on.one weeks later, the fuse blew again.the dealer found the right front wiring harness marker was rubbing against the frame and it had shorted out.

I have serious electrical malfunction with my 2002 nissan xterra.the electrical short causes my amp to blow and stereo to die.i have brought my truck in over 7 times (*currently in dealership's serv dept for exact same problem) and my truck has been "out of service" for 23 days (*currently in dealership's serv dept as we speak) since the problem originally occurred.there has never been a problem found w/in my electrical system or stereo, only amps and fuses replaced (7 times and counting).

All parking lights, side marker lights, and instrucment lights stop working. The "tail lamp" fuse in the engine compartment is blown.

The contact owns a 2002 nissan xterra. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the wires underneath the steering column were burnt. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 204,391.

Vehicle: 2002 nissan xterra setail lights, front side marker lights, dash panel illumination failed due to wire chafing behind driver's side front marker light.the back of the bulb socket for the front side marker light pinches it's connection wire against the head of a 10mm screw located immediately behind the bulb socket.there is not enough clearance between the bulb socket and the chassis screw.the side marker light is mounted in the top edge of the front bumper where it wraps around the side of the vehicle.the bumper moves up and down when the road surface is not smooth, which causes the wire to be rubbed against the head of the chassis screw, which wears the insulation from the wire and results in an electrical short between the damaged wire and the frame of the vehicle.the front side marker lights share the fuse which also protects the tail lights, so when the short occurs the tail lights become inoperative.until we finally found the problem, my daughter had to drive home at night without tail lights on three occasions.the last time it happened, she was stopped by a police officer because her tail lights were not working.i inspected the side marker light on the opposite (passenger) side of this vehicle and found that was much more clearance between the bulb socket and the chassis.

I purchased a brand new 2002 nissan xterra vehicle in november 2001. The vehicle was purchased at the pacific nissan dealership in san diego, california. My wife and children went on an outing on easter sunday. While at lunch, 5-15 minutes go buy and a person inquires about a parked xterra on fire. To my wife's horror it was our xterra with the widows up and flames/smoke coming from the dash/steering column area. My insurance and the fire marshal determined the fire appeared to be an electrical short/arching and no other apparent sources of ignition were present. The vehicle was determined to be a total loss. I had the vehicle towed to pacific nissan where i purchased it and have maintained their recommended routine service. The service management questioned why the vehicle was brought over to the service department and not to their body shop. I explained the body shop sent us over to the service department. He explained to he could not do anything and that i would have to contact my insurance. I questioned him why i have to suffer going through my insurance when this was obviously a manufacturer defect and my vehicle was still under the basic warranty. Knowing i was not getting anywhere with this guy, i requested a phone number for customer service and he explained to me that they would only refer me back to him. I am confused on what i should do. Should i pay the deductible and hope my insurance will pay the whole amount owed on my vehicle? should i get a lawyer? no matter what i am still out a vehicle and have to, in one way or another, pay for some out of pocket expenses. I have contacted the nissan consumer affairs depart. And they explained to me they would have to look into it. The customer affairs rep. Did inform me that there was a recall on their air bag module, but he was not sure what could happen. I have also, in the past, taken in this vehicle in to the service department to replace a gasket in the axle area because it was dripping fluid.

Unable to control speed and battery keeps dying even though battery and alternator test good. When driving at low speed i cannot accelerate gradually, the car revs really hard and pulls hard when trying to increase speed. Once i drive for about 20 minutes and pickup speed the brakes are loose and hard to come to a stop, and the pedal does not respond when accelerating or reducing speed. I recently was going home on the freeway at about 45 mph trying to reduce speed to prepare to exit, and my car just shut off, all dash lard light came on and i had to coast and then get a push from someone to get into the exit lane and coast to the gas station.

I bought the car from hertz, thecar had been in a accident before i bought it. I did not find out about the accident until after i bought the car. The car tires could not stay aligned, the headlights were shooting up about 15 feet off the ground, there is paint splatter on the inside of the car motor, paint splatter on the outside by theguards tire, and you can see paint on the hood by the window on the right side, the toe hook on the right side looks to be new.there is a paint line on the inside of engine compartment, the hood is new, there isno rubber mount on the hood arm that hold the hook up. Over spray on the left drivers door.

Twice while driving vehicle, the engine cut off without warning. I was able to restart vehicle by putting it in neutral both time. Happened fairly close to each other when it stalled. Lost all control.

Vehicle stalls at 100mph also abs light keeps coming on and off randomly brakes aren't bad but it's like they're going out. The brake pedal wobbles when stopping hard or on wet roads also when acceleratating and driving the rpm gauge will jimp up for a second and make the engine sound louder while it does it and also steering wheel feels loose somewhat when driving on rough roads and bumps cruise control lights up but doesn't work happens every day

I purchased a used xterra about 6 months ago. I was pulling into a parking spot in a shopping mall at a low speed when the engine suddenly went into a high whining rev and the vehicle lurched forward and took off out of control. Before comingto a stop it ran into four other parked cars.i was as it had a mind of its own. This has never happened to me in all my years of driving only american made cars. The nissan is the only foreign car i have owned and will likely be the last after this episode.

The contact owns a 2002 nissan xterra. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed and the engine stalled. The failure occurred without warning. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. The vehicle was towed to anything automotive (located at 1228 e river rd, dixon, il 61021; (815) 285-3035) where the mechanic stated that the back seat was catching fire. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-647-7261 and stated that the vehicle was too old and nothing could be done. Case number: 27261028 was provided. The contact also stated that the previous owner of the vehicle had a recall in 2004 for the fuel sending unit. The contact believed that the repair was not repaired correctly or the replacement part was faulty. The failure mileage was 170,000.

I was entering a parking spot at my normal slow speed when suddenly the engine went into an extremely high rev and the xterra made a sudden lunge forward. In a matter of seconds it slammed into a number of other parked cars. It was as if it had a mind of its own. I can only guess it was a stuck gas pedal, stuck throttle or stuck accelerator. Over the years i have had nothing but american cars, the last several were caravans with no issues of this type. This nissan is the first foreign car that i have purchased.

The contact owns a 2002 nissan xterra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. Head gasket failure and antifreeze leak.

While driving vehicle pulls to right and left. Also when braking it has a pulling effect. In addition, had problem with tires.the vehicle has temperature control problems. Also the windshield cracked. The cd player makes noise and the radio malfunctioned. The a/c shorted out. The right rear power window made noise when rolling up and down. Engine makes loud "whistling" sound; engine definitely lost power over the last year; will not go over 70-75 mph; makes loud whining/grinding sound when shifting gears; pulls to the right all the while driving; using an extraordinary amount of gas.(consumer can also be emailed at [email protected])*la

Driving down the highway 65 mph, engine began knocking suddenly, oil light came on, engine stopped. Had vehicle towed to dealer, they told me i needed an engine i asked what caused the problem, they said sludge got in the engine caused it to seize up, they did not determine how the sludge got in the engine.

I was driving when suddenly the engine of my 2002 nissan xterra with approximately 50,000 miles just shut down and caused difficulty with steering and braking of the vehicle.i had to have the vehicle towed to the nissan dealership.it appear the dealer know the cause of the problem just by speaking to me on the telephone.after a diagnosis, the dealership stated the the problem was with the fuel sending unit and that it would require replacement.the issue that i have is that with the extreme danger associated with this issue and after research on the internet of other xterra owners who experienced this problem that nissan is not doing a proactive role and recalling this part if it is prone to such failure.

Dt: the contact stated had a coolant leak coming fromradiator to her engine. She assumed that it was a leak within the engine.theproblem startedaround 1-05, and she took it to dealeron 1-11-05 to have the original coolant problem fixed ,and had to pay $946.36 for the repairs.

Engine check light kept coming on.everytimevehicle has to be reprogrammed. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that parts had to be replaced to keep engine light from coming on.

Engine light has been coming on since the last of january 2002. Consumer has takenvehicle todealership 4 times, and was toldthey did not know what waswrong withtruck. Engine shut off while going about 60 mph.

This is the worst vehicle i have ever purchased, 10 months old and i am scared to take it on a the highway, waste of money. No safety defect listed.

Vehicle died upon acceleration.consumer took vehicle to dealer, and they said air control valve had shutdown. Dealer repaired problem.three weeks laterproblem reoccurred.the consumer stated that engine fails to a default speed of about 15 mph. The dealer described as an error in computer engine control.

Consumer was traveling about 55mph on a main highway and without prior warning vehicle shutdown. Vehicle was costed to side of road, dealership is aware ofproblem.

The owners of this truck live 6500 feet above elevation.the truck will lose power or will not maintain moderate speed.the truck was returned to the dealership and they told him that the truck was too heavy for that size engine to deal with that kind of altitude.two other dealers in the area also came to the same conclusion.please describe details.

Both of the vehicles exhaust manifolds have developed cracks and had to be replaces because of potential exhaust fumes entering the drivers cabin. This is a well known and common occurrence with 00-02 nissan xterras . Nissan changed the manifold design in 03 which acknowledged that they recognized the issue but have done nothing to recall or compensate consumers for the issue in prior models.

The exhaust manifold on the passenger side of vehicle is cracked allowing exhaust fumes into the passenger area. This is a well known problem among nissan xterra owners.

The car suddenly lost power on acceleration up to 60 mph upon passing another vehicle. After losing power, the car "service engine soon" light came on and stayed on. The engine ran rough with hesitation and could maintain a speed of only 30 mph. Car was towed to dealer, who diagnosed the problem as a mass airflow sensor malfunction. Dealer re-set e.c.u. And so far, problem has not repeated.power window problem occurs on driver side, front window. The window goes down at normal speed but comes up very slowly with intermittent stops. First time problem reported to dealer, dealer lubed window track. Problem persisted, so went to another dealer, who ordered a new rubber window casing.

Had the check engine light come on had xterra for only 26 days find out it is emissions problem no help from dealer.

Turned on vehicle in the morning to go to work.enginecheck soon light came on and wouldn't go off.dropped vehicle off at dealership.say it is the purge volume control valve but they cannot get the computer to reset with their computer in the service department.stated they may need to keep the vehicle more than one day.

The contact had triple aaa tow the vehicle to a nissan dealership.the problem was diagnosed as diesel fuel mixed with gas.the contact was told that the vehicle needed the fuel tank and the fuel system to be flushed, and the oil changed, spark plugs replaced, and the fuel filter replaced.the dealer had the contacts vehicle for approximately three weeks and performed an oil change, flushed the fuel tank, and fuel system.the contact picked up thevehicle ,went directly across the street and purchased high octane gas.the vehicle ran long enough for him to go across the street, gotthe gas and then the vehicle stalled.the contact didnot believe that the vehicle was working as it did before the repairs were performed.the vehicle was taken back to the dealer , where another diagnostic had to be done, and the dealertold the contact that theengine needed to be rebuilt.the contact believed that the first diagnostic should have revealed that the engine had a problem, and that nothing on the dashboard ever indicated that the oil was low.the vehicle was purchased in august, and the problems began at the end of january.the contact felt that if the vehicle did not have oil it was purchased that way.the current and failure mileage were 50,000.the dealer states tag light not working and cd player not working. The consumer provided information from carfax and a repair invoice. Updated 06/08/07

Check engine light is on and a there is an obvious smell of gasoline on the drivers side in the back of the vehicle. Dealer tells me that the fuel tank needs to be replaced and this is a common issue with them as they rust around the top of the tank. This is a separate issue from the fuel sending unit recall that has been done to these vehicles.

The contact owns a 2002 nissan xterra. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the cause of the failure was the fuel sending harness which shorted and caused the plastic fuel line to melt and started a small fire. The contact called the manufacturer who took a complaint and stated that they would review the problem. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 138,000.

I was driving down the highway at 65 mph when my engine died.i cruised it to the side of the road and attempted to start it again, but it would not turn over.i could smell gas.after having it towed, we initially determined fuel pump failure.once the repair was initiated, we found that the wire to the fuel sending unit was corroded and had heated up enough to cause a pea size hole in the plug.after some research i found that there was a recall for this exact failure completed on my vehicle in 12/2004, but instead of replacing the unit, they only sprayed sealant on the wire (because no corrosion was found) to prevent corrosion in the future.we replaced the sending unit, fuel pump and fuel filter.the old part is still available for inspection.i am filing a complaint with nissan.i am not the original owner.

My wife was driving her nissan xterra when the vehicle engine suddenly died in traffic in a multi-lane street with heavy traffic.she had to get out of the car and, with the help of our son, push it off to the side of the road to clear the street.the failure was found later to be a bad fuel pump and bad fuel sending unit.the vehicle was towed to a repair shop that did the diagnosis and isolated the fault to those two components.they replaced the fuel pump and sending unit, as well as the fuel filter and strainer.during the conversation with the repair shop (not a nissan dealership) they mentioned that there was a nissan recall out for the sending unit, and that i ought to be reimbursed by nissan.when i contacted nissan they told me i could not be reimbursed because the recall / repair had already been done on this same vehicle in 2005.if the recall was done correctly by the dealership, this item should not have failed when my wife was driving it.

2002 xterra died while driving. Fuel sender corroded at the pump and had to be replaced.the mechanic informed the consumer there was a recall regarding the issue, however the vehicle would need to be taken to a certified nissan dealer in order for it to be free. The consumer proceed to have the work done by her local mechanic instead.

Engine would stall while at low speed. Also auto would not start and ther was a semll of plastic burning

When driving at a determined speed consumernoticed a loss of fuel on the fuel gauge. Consumer had contacteddealer about this issue, and mechanic determined thatfuel tankfailed.

Significant deficient highway fuel economy.vehicle achieves roughly 60% of reported highway mileage on average.highway mileage is worse than city average.several dealers are aware of problem and cannot fix.manufacture is aware of problem and denies existence.

My car was recalled for a problem connected to the fuel sending unit in 2006. It has now been back in for repair for the fuel sending unit over 14 times in the past 4 years. The past several repairs have been made via the guidance of engineers at from the main factory and yet my car is still having the same problem and the dealership nor the main company are willing to take responsibility.

Loses pressure on the brakes, the steering wheel is moving sideways

Steering wheel does not lock when ignition is turned off.ignition can be in off position and keys removed with gear shifter still in "d" drive.i did not know this was not normal until on 7/16/2004 the steering wheel was locked and it took apprx 10 minutes of adjusting wheel and on/off of the brake pedal to get the wheel to unlock.i then read the owners manual and realized i should not be able to remove the keys from the ignition when the gear shifter still in drive.i have done this many times after the 2nd or 3rd i caontacted the dealer to let them know i was not happy with this vehicle as i had to actually run after it at a gas station.the service rep at trophy nissan said my truck was no longer under warranty but they will look at it and tell me how much it will cost to correct the problem.this is not a warranty issue, this vehicle is clearly defective and very dangerous.because of this problem i do not allow any family member to drive this truck in fear they will either run over themselves or injury someone else when the truck rolls away.

The vehicle continued to experience problem with the axle after the vehicle was serviced fornhtsa recall #02v299000. The dealer stated that there was nothing they could do and that they replaced the component indicated in the recall.

I own a 2002 xterra se-sc the seatbelt on passenger side locks up but doesn't release when driving complained to dealer they can't find anything wrong with it. Can you pass some info to me when avalible. Dp

Intermittentlysrs lightstayes illuminated while driving. Dealer has repariedvehicle four times; however, light is still illuminated.also, according toowner's manual whenlight illuminates there is a possibility thatrestraints will be inoperable. Please provide additional information.

I have been complaining to bankston nissan of irving about the passenger side front seat shaking badly when driven. There first answer on 5/29/02 was there is nothing we can do. The next time i complained the answer was there might be something wrong with the tires or they might be of balance. The last time i took it to them they told me that all xterra seats shake like that. I took it to urban nissan for a second opinion they told me within 1 hour that the seat back needs to be replaced. This tells me that the service tech at bankston don't know what they are doing or they are being racist against some races. Dp

I had my brake boosters replaced on 05/22/2019.i was backing up slowly on 07/24/2020 in a parking lot of a convenience store. As i was backing up, i tried to apply the brakes and they became stiff. I tried to pump harder on the brakes and they would not stop the vehicle in which it was to late and my car collided into a utility pole.

The vehicle started to sputter and the abs and airbag lights started to come on.when the gears shifted up, it started to resist acceleration and losing transmission power.started to shift down and coast.pulled over to the side and the vehicle shut off.would not start back up.

Had to brake hard on the express way, brake pedal went to the floor, avoided an accident. The cause of the brake failure is a hole in the hard brake line on the front passenger side by the heat exhaust shield.

Loses pressure on the brakes, the steering wheel is moving sideways

Upon slowing down for a red traffic light brake pedal got hard not allowing vehicle to stop and vehicle also starting rapidly accelerating without pressing the gas pedal.resulted in a crash with a stopped vehicle at the traffic light.no serious injuries thankfully.

On 5/2/2012 at approximately 2:30pm in the afternoon vehicle traveling on a divided highway in moderate traffic at approximately 30mph. While braking for traffic at a stop light operator felt a sudden drop in the brake pedal and loss of stopping ability requiring them to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid the car in front of them. The vehicle was drivable but required more stopping distance to brake. Light smoke noted while stopped but none at speed. Upon stopping to investigate the light smoke, which was coming from the front right wheel area the hood was opened to investigate and a small flame was noted on the exhaust manifold which was extinguished with an abc extinguisher. Brake fluid noted to be low in the master cylinder. Vehicle towed to shop for investigation and repair. Brake line found to have been rubbing against exhaust manifold shielding which rubbed away the rubber protective liner over time allowing water/rain to slowly rust the brake line which burst and squirted brake fluid onto the manifold where it ignited. Online research shows this to be a known problem experienced/reported by other owners of same make/model. High potential for bodily harm via accident (inability to stop) and loss of property (fire).

Vehicle pulls right.you need to keep your hands on the wheel at all times.tires are feathering.i was driving on a three land highway.i had to hit my brakes and almost took out the car on the right side of me.this vehicle is dangerous.i also noticed that there were numerous other complaints of the same problem on your website.dt

While driving 55mph, my rear axle broke causing the wheel to fly off, loss of control, and obvious damage to the car.i later found out that there was a abs recall for this identical problem, but i was never informed of the recall.after 4 weeks, i have been told the nissan will cover the repair of the vehicle, but that is all.i would like to know if there is anything else i can or should pursue for negligence on behalf of the corporation and the dealer.i was extremely fortunate that myself and my 2 year old were not seriously injured or killed in this accident, and feel someone should be held acountable.

On 09/10/03, while driving at a slow rate of speed my vehicle experienced total braking failure with loss of all pressure in the brake pedal.fortunately, this did not result in a collision.the vehicle was towed to tamaroff nissan where analysis was performed and the following explanation offered:i was told that through normal wear on the brake pads the metal-to-metal contact created excessive heat causing the calipers to seize the rotor creating damage to both the rotor and calibers resulting in a major loss of function.an estimate of repairs of greater than $940.00 was provided.i am questioning this explanation and am requesting formal investigation not only due to the expensive repair, but the potential for major safety implications if this is in fact a part of normal wear at 25,000 miles.i am requesting that this situation be investigated under the ongoing nhtsa investigation of nissan xtera rotor failure action number dp03-005 opened 07/11/03.i find the explanation difficult to accept in as much as the event occurred after driving only approximately 1,000 feet on the property of william beaumont hospital.it is implausible that excessive heat could have caused the seizure of the nissan north america inc.page twoseptember 11, 2003brake calibers on the rotor.on at least two occasions the vehicle was serviced at the same dealership when complaints of a noise from the left front wheel while turning to the right were addressed.in addition, a burning smell was described and addressed.a vehicle inspection at the dealership at 17,180 miles was also performed with no indication of any brake problem.

I have a nissan xterra and the wiring to the brake system is faulty.my brake lights went out and i have seen numerous xterra's all over las vegas of the same year that have the same problem.i went to nissan about a year ago and they wanted to charge me too much to look at it.

Purchased in november of 2006 and in may 2008 as i was attempting to stop at a traffic light in the city only doing about 10 mph. The wheel jerked really funny and there was a noise coming from the brakes. Upon attempting to go my car wouldn't pick up speed and was making a rubbing noise. Limped into garage where they showed me my calipers were locked up. Had both calipers, brakes and rotors replaced. October 2009, driving at 55 mph, started smelling burnt rubber smell, check engine light came on so i pulled over to have it towed. Thought it was overheating even though gauge did not indicate that. Garage stated i needed a new brake line so had it replaced and on the way home i began smelling that horrible smell again so i decided to take to another garage where they showed me my caliper was locked up just enough to heat the rotor up. Had caliper and brakes replaced. April 2010, just from past experiences i knew what the rubbing noise and loss of power meant. Sure enough driver's side caliper was locked up. Had caliper, brakes and new brake hose put on. July 2011, yet again my caliper is locked up. So as i am typing this its back in for the usual. In almost every instance there were no warning signs of failure until it became extreme. I contacted nissan but they stated its the usual wear and tear. I have never heard of replacing calipers every year under normal driving conditions.

Consumer states while driving and applying the brakes steering wheel would pull in either directions.

I have a 2002 nissan xterra that had brake squeals since about 9000 miles. I have repeatedly taken it to the dealer to have the problem fixed/inspected. I was told that the squeal is a result of the type of brakes and that they were just cold. The problem is that the brakes squeal all the time.i was then told on another visit that it was the drive belt and not the brakes. After this service the squeal was still there. I took it back yet again and they did another brake inspection and said that when i do my brakes they will have to spin the rotors and this should fix this. The problem i have is that i shouldn't have to pay for this fix since it's been on going for almost a year.

The abs brakes do not work due to the brackets missing. Also, sensor does not work. However, without the bracket vehicle can not be fixed.the consumer stated that the part was recall and it took the delearship two to three months to get the part. *sb

Check the engine light came on.

The suv deviates to the right at any speed with in a few seconds. It is extremely notiaceable at speeds above 40 mph. Constant pressure must be held on the steering wheel to the left. The suv also deviated to the left when the brakes are applied hard, such as for sudden halting. The suv would end on the shoulder if the brakes were applied hard. The suv has been at the nissan repair shop four times. There was some adjustments the last two times. Now the suv still deviates to the right (like tring to run off the road) at cruising speeds. There has been a change with the behavior with sudden braking. The suv now ends on the left lane or incomming lane when the brakes are applied suddenly. The above problems were not noted during the first two weeks of driving, but since them it seems to be getting worse. The dealer has not been able to fix the problem. I do worry about the behavior of the truck on the road under rain, snow, or ice conditions. I find it difficult to predictwhat the truck will do under an emergency. I was driving my xterra home and all at once it got loud and a smell of sulfur came out stopped by local shop (monroe) they looked at it and after they all had their laugh said" omg we cannot believe someone sold this truck in this shape" 1) the pipe at the converter broke,2) the rust and rot is horrid3) the cob job this so called mechanic didagain wow4) the steering is tightening up on me periodically and making it unsafe for me to drive and control the truck. 5 ) gas problems6) code lights you name it7) the running boards broke off little each day something breaks or goes wrong with it.my grandkids are in this truck daily it is not safe. This is a very solid, and stable vehicle in the snow and ice, (with studded snow tires, all season radials only work in florida) it handles well, and performs nicely for a small suv. The only complaints thati have with this vehicle, is that the ride is a bit rough. And it is a bit uncomfortable for taller people on long rides. To those that are complaining about the vehicle pulling to the left and right. Cure #1, get the car aligned. #2, check the road you are driving on, the track width on the xterra is narrow, it may be catching a groove in the road. #3 check the tire pressures,to complaints about the braking....... Have the brakes checked, rotors, pads, or calipers could be sticking. *nlm

2002 nissan xterra: the spare tire holder winch mechanism in ne regions rusts (from what i gather in on line research the problem is rampant) and freezes not allowing you to lower the tire to replace a flat. I had a flat on a very busy road. I could not lower the spare and bent the rod.called aaa. Had to have flat tire taken off and repaired before i could move again.very dangerous to not be able to repair flat. After i went to tire store.they were not able to release winch and indicated they see the issue very often in nissan suvs. They said my only option was to cut off winch mechanism and keep spare in back of vehicle. After declining, i did research and found that this problem is very common. There has been no recalls that i could find on line and i still have not found a reasonable fix.

The contact owns a 2002 nissan xterra. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact stated that the hood of the vehicle began to shake abnormally. The contact stopped the vehicle and discovered that the metal support mechanism under the hood was suffering from metal fatigue. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was told that the metal fatigue was normal and the vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the metal fatigue progressively became worse. The failure mileage was 157,000 and the current mileage was 167,400. Updated 1/13/2012 *ln

Check the engine light came on.

Vehicle vibrates so hard that passenger's seat back vibrates as it the seat is broken and makes an annoying noise. Contacted dealer they said they can not do anything about it. Please provide any info you have.

Car pulls to the right since i bought it. I took it to the dealer several times about 4 to do an alignment and still the same its very dangerous.

Vehicle vibrates so hard that passenger's seat makes an annoying noise, consumerloses concentration of the road.please provide any furtherinformation.

*nlm

While driving the vehicle pulls to the right, if the brakes are applied aggresively the vehicle runs of the road, as a result the dealer noticed that the tires were beginning to feather on the right side.nlm

Abs light came on while driving.vehicle was taken to dealer who stated rear passenger side wheel was about to fall off.inner seal on axle bearing had failed. Consumer noticed gear oil around rear passenger side tire. Vehicle at dealership at this time.consumer states that now the air bag light has illuminated, dealer stated that the control module and the coil wire for the drivers side air bag needed to be replaced.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a recall #02v299000. The consumer noticed the mechanic did not put sealant on the abs sensor.the mechanic stated he did everything as he was told.

Right rear shock broke while driving 35 mph. Manufacturer was notified, and they informed the consumer that it was considerednormal wear at 80,000 miles.

The vehicle left a couple large puddles while parked. Dealer identified the problem as a completely failed rear shock, due to corrosion, and recommended immediate replacement or risk diminished handling. At 37,500 mi, the 2002 model year vehicle was no longer under factory warranty so both rear shocks were replaced at owner's expense.

The main leaf spring in the rear suspension sheared off next to the axle while driving. I was the only person in the car and the total load in the rear of the car was approximately 100lbs. The spring caught on the brake line as it broke. My abs light came on. The repairs have not been made yet.

I own a 13 month old 2002 nissan xterra that has 32,600 miles on it and has never been driven off-road.the leaf spring on the driver's side broke at the rear mounting bolt.luckily we caught it immediately and the dealer is replacing it under warranty.has this been a problem with the xterra and should the other one be replaced at the same time?the dealer claims to have looked at the other one and sees no problem at this time.i'm concerned about the safety because i do a lot of high speed driving with my daughter in the car. *nlm

Have complained to dealership (east tn nissan, knoxville) on several occasions that there is significant vibration all over vehicle. Hear intermittent whistling noise--cannot tell if coming from front or rear. I suggested to them it might be a wheel bearing. Dealership insists not. They had me take vehicle to local tire dealer (tires plus, 4901 clinton hwy., knoxville, tn 37912) after telling me the tires were out-of-round (service rep. Said "vibration due to high road force."). However, local tire dealer claimed east tn nissan doesn't know how to balance a tire and said tires were not out of round. They balanced tires and sent me on my way--did say they would "sell me a different tire at a prorated price." this is "bunk" after paying nearly $30,000 for this vehicle! vibration continues and is worsening!!! dealership offers nothing toward helping me get replacement tires on this vehicle! i am afraid they either did not really do the recall on the rear housing and are jerking me around or else that tires (or possibly wheels!) are out-of-round, and they refuse to accept responsibility!

Dp

Engine light has been coming on since the last of january 2002. Consumer has takenvehicle todealership 4 times, and was toldthey did not know what waswrong withtruck. Engine shut off while going about 60 mph.

Engine check light kept coming on.everytimevehicle has to be reprogrammed. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that parts had to be replaced to keep engine light from coming on.

I was approaching the 'on' ramp when xterra pulled to side then flipped over 3x.there are 4 recalls;3 may have contributed to rollover.

The inner ceiling fabric all came loose and i'm now holding it up with staples. I've never had this happen with any other vehicle.

Turned on vehicle in the morning to go to work.enginecheck soon light came on and wouldn't go off.dropped vehicle off at dealership.say it is the purge volume control valve but they cannot get the computer to reset with their computer in the service department.stated they may need to keep the vehicle more than one day.

The contact owns a 2002 nissan xterra.while driving 35 mph, the headliner fell without warning.the contact stated that nissan has done nothing about the failure.the purchase date and failure mileage were unknown.the current mileage is 78,904.

Service engine soon

After shifting into reverse, with one foot on the clutch, and one foot on the brake still, my xterra begins accelerating in reverse though my feet were on the clutch and brake only. My xterra's brakes only stopped my vehicle after shifting into neutral and then turning off the engine.

- the contactownsa 2002 nissan xterra.while driving at 35 mph the vehicle began to vibrate.the contact pulled into a gas station, purchased oil and put it into the vehicle, andthenthe vehicle would not start.

Unable to control speed when trying to accelerate from low to higher. Vehicle stalls when going above 40mph without warning often. Also, it is hard to sometimes increase speed or drive at a constant mph speed such as when going through residential neighborhoods. When traveling -15 mph and trying to a celebrate onto freeway etc the engine stalls and jerks, and the rpmspins very hard and rough when trying to accelerate. Throttle is not responsive acceleration when given gassed pedal does not increase and decrease speed accordingly, which gives a complete lack of control over driving vehicle. There is also a problem with securing back row seatbelts hence, my increased concern of outcome should an unfortunate collision occurr with my child in the car.

When driving it is impossible to accelerate to normal speed even when pressing pedal to the floor, when i try to accelerate past 15 mph the engine revs really hard and jerks as if it is about to stall. I stalled out on the freeway without warning. It is hard to control speed when tryin to increase or decrease acceleration. The pedal feels inconsistent with the throttle and/ or rpm and is very hazardous. When trying to drive in low speeds in residential area or park the pedalarely moves and if given the slightest gas it will shut off e fine or take off and does not respond when you stop acceleration, or brake as it should. I have had power steering column fixed and air intake flow hose replaced, i keep getting error codes that come and go: p0122, p0128, and p0123. This seems to have similar recalls for othe model and year of nissan, and when i inquire a out the issue to nissan recall dept. They say the previous recall for gas response unit has been completed on this vehicle however, i cannot understand how that is possible with this issue i am having. I just bought this truck to drive my child to school and i'm afraid this willcause an a cident if not repaired soon however, i am certain this is a manufactur defect related to fuel line or throttle since the loss of acceleration is extremely noticeble to othe nissan owners and i hope it is investigatedas current recalls need to be expanded or investigated for the nissan xterra and possibly all nissan vehicles with similar reported issues.

After shifting into reverse, with one foot on the clutch, and one foot on the brake still, my xterra begins accelerating in reverse though my feet were on the clutch and brake only. My xterra's brakes only stopped my vehicle after shifting into neutral and then turning off the engine.

I was traveling on i-76 in colorado and using my cruise control. I had noticed one time on the highway that when i put on the brake the cruise control did not disengage until multiple attempts. I was about to exit the highway at julesburg colorado heading west, disengaged the cruise control by stepping on the brake and when i got on the exit ramp it re-engaged. I put in the clutch, stepped on the brake with no response. The exit ramp is short and a single lane. At the bottom of the ramp was a semi-truck and i had to steer the car into the area next to the ramp and i hit a culvert and the car flipped three times. My daughter and i were taken to the hospital and released that evening. I reported this to nissan, they inspected the car at the junk yard and said nothing was wrong. I never believed that nothing was wrong but now believe it was an electronic failure. I have pictures of the car from the accident. The car was a total loss.

- while driving the 2002 nissan xterra with a failure mileage of 26,000 miles.the contact noticed that the engine light intermittently turned on.also, the vehicle would not accelerate properly, and made noises.the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who stated that the super charger was failing.the vehicle still had not been repaired.the current mileage was 30,000. A recall was issued regarding the supercharger. Updated 05/02/07

When driving at highway speeds of 80 mph and fastervehicle rapidly decelerated and launched forward. Dealership serviced the vehicle several times before identifying the problem ascruise control .in the meantime the problemprogressed and almost caused an accident.this failure could have resulted in loss of control.

Front passenger window began to slow during raising, then it stalled down and the two rear windows froze down also, noaction taken at this time.

All of the window regulators on my 2002 nissan xterra do not work, causing the windows to never be used for fear of them being stuck in the down position. I have had to repair the drivers side once already to the tune of $200. This apparently a known problem by nissan, and the best they would do is to extend the warranty to 60k miles or 5 years from purchase. Most people i've talked to were already past this point,so there is nothing that nissan will do for them...me included. I could replace the other 3 windows but at $200 ea and with it being a known issue why should i be stuck with this.

The car suddenly lost power on acceleration up to 60 mph upon passing another vehicle. After losing power, the car "service engine soon" light came on and stayed on. The windows on the front and back on the driver side go down and will not go up. Vehicle was given an extended warranty from 30,000 miles to 60,000 miles aftervehicle had already 60,000 miles on it. Therefore, the extended warranty was pointless. Currently, consumer had to pay out of pocket to repair the windows.

Power window regulator and motor failure. Took my 2002 nissan xterra in for its 45,000 mile standard service.2 weeks earlier i noticed that the passenger side rear power window motorstopped working.so i asked the technician to look at the issue.technician called me later in day to say that the motordied, and needed to be replaced.also, warranty expired.this surprised me because being the only driver of the car, without kids, i only put therear windows down a handful of times since owning the vehicle.it seemed very premature for this part to fail.i told the technician this, and he said that there was a service bulletin on the car's window regulator, but not the motor...so he would be willing to cover labor if i purchased the part for $260.00.i agreed that he should order the part.later that night, i went on the internet to research the issue, and found that thousands of consumers with 2001 and 2002 xterrashad similar issues with their power window motors failing at 12-45,000 miles.i suspected that the regulator defect was causing the motors to work harder than they should and burn out prematurely.i asked the nissan dealership to replace free of charge the regulator/motor unit since the known regulator defect caused the motor failure.they told me that the motor had nothing to do with the regulator, and refused to honor this request. I and thousands of other people were being unfairly treated.what wasworse was that i found on line that the regulator/motor part was sold as 1 unit and for $66.00 with a lifetime warranty whereas the replacement until nissan was selling me cost$260.00 with only a 12 month limited warranty.

Check the engine light came on.

Electric window regulator failure without warning, window stays in the open position, right front was repaired, right rear also broke immediately after, not yet repaired, windows are rarely used so this is not a wear and tear or mileage factor, dealer said manufacturer would cover up to 60k so nissan knows the part is defective (they sell an "all-window" repair kit because they know they will all fail), a known defective part should be repaired equally for all owners.

My wife's car was in need of two front tires so i took my vehicle to wheels 360- it was the only shop open and i was crunched on time. She is an emt and i am an educator so we do not have much spare time during the week. The shop over charged me for two low quantity tires. There were two workers replacing the tires on my vehicle. The workerreplacing the wheel on the passengerside damaged the wheel studs because he was on a hurry. The lead worker and two others spent 2 hours trying to fix the studs and get some of the lug nuts back on. They managed to get 5 out of the six on. They insisted on sending me home with a wheel missing one lug nut. They asked me to comeback tomorrow or some other day to fix it. It was close to 9 pm by that time, and i was frustrated. I drove home and on the way home, the center hub plastic coveringfell off. It exposed the axle/bearing. I feel that vehicle is unsafe to drive and i do not feel comfortable driving my toddler around. Shops like the one mentioned should not be allowed to operate because they compromise drivers' safety.i would like 1. A reimbursement for the overpriced tires and 2. My vehicle properly serviced so that it's safe to drive.thank you for your time and consideration.

Tires are recalled and cause the speedometer to register slower than actual speed

When driving at various speeds and without warningconsumer could hear a loud grinding noise coming from the right rear wheel. Dealer had been notified.

2002 nissan xterra, over the last year, wheel lug nuts have broken off the wheels, the actual stud broke off for no apparent reason, this has happen on all 4 wheels, each time i had a mechanic replace the bad parts. Note these were not cross threaded,. And were also tighten with a torque wrench. The stud just broke off. Today was the most recent when i from a broken one in the driveway.

The right rear wheel separated from the axle. The nuts and bolts had loosened and fallen off.while driving down an off road path, the vehicle suddenly stopped.the emergency brake had engaged.the consumer noticed the tire shifted outside of the tire well about 2 inches.as the consumer examined under the vehicle, he noticed that of the 4 bolts holding the wheel to the axle only one remained and didn't have a nut holding it.(all four nuts had loosened to the point of falling off)at a slow speed on a gravel surface it had broken the brake line, parking brake, and various parts of the brake drum.*scc
