Weird electrical problems,i have taken to 2 different people, 1 of which specializes in transmissions, the problem is that when the vehicle is warmed up the transmission doesn't know what gear it is in, on initial investigation the problem appears to be the trottle position sensor but that was replaced and still no fix. They hooked up computers to the car while driving and say the computer doesn't read the tps being operative during driving but no problems can be found with the wiring and computer board. When the engine transmission starts to mess up the locks start to lock and unlock by themselves while driving, the check engine light is on and the overdrive light blinks off and on. At one time the air bag light come on for no reason it was checked and problem found. The sliding door latch broke within a couple of months of buying. The back windshield wiper motor would also come on by itself, we ended up taking the fuse out for that.

Engine light on - computer code: anti-knock sensor estimated repair @$350. Did not repair; reset system, light did not reappear for 3,000 miles, reset again.door locks intermittent problem, esp. With slider.airbag light flashing, cannot afford repair.read light burning out bulbs (twice within 3 mos.) after market repair caused different problem.

Ihave had many problems with this ouest.i have replaced the heater control, both side exhaust manifolds, replace acc c/v boot, replace antenna motor, replace air bag control unit, replace back windshield wiper motor, replace both front lower ball joints and the vent hose. This are just the major things. I have spend around 7000.00 on this quest for repairs and up keep. I brought it new in may of 1996. Never again.

The srs airbag system module located under the drivers side dash is defective. This is a problem which is well known on the 1996 quest. The vehicle owner becomes aware of the problem by the red dash indictor light blinking on andoff. Nissan is aware of the srs system failure but will not cover replacement for this part unless vehicle is under warranty. This is a chronic failure of the airbag system and nissan should be held accountable for it.

No deployment of air bag in accident, causing head injury to driver.

Air bags lights illuminate intermittently.

Airbag light had been flashing. Consumer calledto dealer who stated repair might costbetween $500 - $ 2000 . Not repaired. The air conditioning and heating smoked real bad and had quit.

Airbaglight flashing/system inoperable. Warranty expired 5 months ago.dealer will inspect for $75.///doors lock/unlock by themselves. Dealer replaced locks at cost of $393.///sliding door doesn't close properly and sometimes will not open. Suspect lock failure.///power steering fails intermittently at speeds of less than 10mph.

Other: air bags not safe for small children/women/aged.

While making a stopas a result of an accidentair bag deployed unexpectedly. Please provide further information.

Leased vehicle; driver's air bag deployed while stopping at a light. Dealer contacted and stated company will investigate the problem.

When the underbody of vehicle scrapped the roadthere was deployment of both air bags. The deployment of the air bags caused the windshield to break.

Dt: theairbags did not deploy although the van was destroyed and totaled. Even the police couldn't believe that the airbags did not depoly. Consumer hit a deer, and the impact was on the driver's front side.neither of the two front airbags worked.

Swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle and hit a curb.the air bags deployed.the drivers side air bag did not inflate - instead it blew up in drivers face.the passenger side air bag deployed and caught fire.

Consumer's son was driving when he hit a bump in road and both air bags deployed, burninghis arms.

Air bag deployed but did not inflate during collision.

Dt:since 08-26-05 the air bag warning light stayed on.it had been turning on and off for the past two years.when the consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealership they told him that the airbag unit had to be replaced.the consumer has not yet replacedthe airbag unit.there have been no accidents.the consumer felt that the airbag unit should not have to be replaced since it has never been used.

While trying to turn the steering wheel the steering locks up. Also the sensors on the engine and air bag are disabled. The alarms on both do not stay on.

The contact owns a 1996 nissan quest.while driving to a stop. The contact noticed a puff of smoke near the front end of her vehicle.she stopped and exited the vehicle to look under the hood and noticed flames.she immediately slammed the hood down and removed her children from the vehicle.the fire department extinguished the fire and stated that a fuel leak was the cause of the failure.there were no warning indicators prior to the fire.a police report was filed.the failure mileage was 80,000. On 4/18/01, noticed one headlamp not lit. On opening the hood, discovered both main grounding wires were "exploded" from inside their casings. Individual strands were in some cases still intact while others were completely separated. Wires nearby were also severed by what appears to be a major electrical surge.an additional small secondary grounding wire was separated from its mount. Reconnecting that wire "fixed" the nonfunctioning headlight. Next day, both headlights were out. On opening the hood, discovered both main grounding wires completely separated, secondary grounding wire separated, headlamp wiring connectors "burned" and all connecting wires (3 per) separated. Electrical "scarring" evident on nearby metal and plastic inside the engine compartment. Wire and plastic fragments found under and around affected areas. Windshield washer filler cap and funnel "scarred". All other mechanical and electrical functions appear to operate normally, including turn indicators and parking lights. The contact owns a 1996 nissan quest. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle started to shake without warning. The contact was able to continue driving the vehicle.the failure occurred approximately every four months.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who indicated the vehicle had a design flaw and the motor mounts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired three times for the same failure.the manufacturer was notified of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 152,799.

My quest would take a long time to get heat into the interior.recently it started overheating as well.i replaced the thermostat, but all the instructions say to install the thermostat so the spring is facing to the inside of the engine.however, the t'stat listed for this vehicle will not fit with the spring to the inside of the engine; and the original t'stat (i don't think it has ever been replaced - it had nissan on it) was installed with the spring end facing the hose end.so i installed a shorter t'stat so the spring would fit toward the engine.now the interior gets heat quickly, but the engine still overheats.the radiator cap has been replaced, and the cooling system flushed.the problem eprsists.

The head of a bold holding the head to the engine block failed.the loose bolt head then jammed the cam shaft preventing the cam shaft from rotating.when starting the engine, the timing belt broke at the drive shaft damaging valves since the engine is a "non-clearance" engine.the bolt failed by fatigue which is evident in the failure surface. The fatigue failure originated at a location just under the bolt head due to a manufacturing defect.it is estimated that the repair will cost about $2000.

Engine had to be replaced after five thousand miles, dealer is picking up the charges. Consumer was told by dealer that she is not the only one that this is happening to.

The vehical has failed on me four times since i purchased it used in early 2000, while operating under heavy strain at higher elevations, the engine quits dead with no notice of the on coming failure, i have had it into a dealer twice for the same problem and they can not diagnose the problem.it is dangerous and possible a deadly situation for me and my family. I have had the fuel pressure regulator checked and checks ok. I would not nor will not sell this car to anyone under it's current condition.

Vehicle will lose power andsteering will lock up. This happens when consumer is driving at speeds below 40 mph.

Smog problem.

Dealership fixed lock problem, but then refused to fix alarm problem after car was paid for. They told me it wasn't their problem, and that it would cost me about $500.00 to fix it. I couldn't afford to get it fixed right. Can you help me with this problem.

The fuel tank vent line flexible rubber hose between the fuel tank and the metal vent pipe developed at least two cracks in it. This is causing fuel to leak out of this connecting hose when the vehicle is refueld. This leakage occurs until the level in the fuel tank is low enough that it is below the flexible hose.

Gas fumes were leaking intovehicle. Vehicle been in dealer's shop on two occasions, andproblem still occurring. Please feel free to provide any further details.

The interior of van would fill with a gas odor.it also had a gas leak when the tank was filled. I had it checked out at the dealer and they informed me that it was related to a manufacturer's recall of the fuel filler vent hose.they repaired it and replaced the vent hose, but the odor continued.i took it back for a second time but the dealer could not find anything wrong with it.the gas odor would come on mainly when the a/c was on.i contacted customer service at the dealer and all they could tell me is that they could not find anything wrong.1 year later after living with this gas odor my van exploded and the entire engine burned.i've called nissan and all they can tell me is that the vehicle is not under warranty anymore and the fire is not related to the recall because it was only the vent hose.

My 1996 nissan quest has fuel vent problems particularly after refuel.i smell fuel inside the car and i am concerned about the risk of fire and/or explosion. This problem appears to be identical to the problem described in nhtsa recall number 00v419001.however, nissan company is saying that my nissan's vin is not included in the recall.

When traveling there is gasoline smell inside ofvehicle. Dealership is aware ofproblem.consumer states there is also a gasoline smell when vehicle is parked.

Strong gas odor inside vehicle while drive. It got so bad it actually caused headache. Nissan dealer was unable to identify the problem.

Strong gas odor inside vehicle while drive. It got so bad it actually caused headache. I have no sense of smell was unable identify this problem sooner till headaches starting to occurring. Then other people told methat there are strong gas odor inside vehicle. I googled it and realized lots of people who owned 1996 nissan quest has the same problem. I called nissan dealer and was told vin #was not part of recall #00v419001 (fuel system gasoline)

1996 nissan quest fuel pump needed to be replaced.***no answer required***. *mrwhile driving the vehicle made a humming noise in the engine compartment.the noise gets louder over a period of time.the vehicle was taken to two nissan dealer and three independent garage.one of the nissan dealers was unsure what the problem was.the other dealer said it was normal engine noise.all three independent garages agreed that the problem was the fuel pump.

Nhtsa recall campaign 00v419001 concerning fuel tank vent hose. While driving there was a strong smell of gasoline in the vehicle. Consumer contacted the manufacturer, and was told that this vehicle was not covered under the recall due to vin although it experienced the same effects. Consumer added when the fuel tank is filled more than half way, the gasoline smell is prominent.consumer has to drive with window open.

Noticed gas smell inside and around vehicle for some time even after the recall fix was done. On date of failure, vehicle was hard to start and engine ran poorly with visible smoke from the exhaust. Gas fumes were extremely strong and gas was visible on injector and engine.

The car hesitates, coughs at intervals like it is miss-firing.a throttle clean, manifold clean and tank filter clean have all been performed and still it jolts and appears for a split second like it is going to stall and die.started just when stopped or idling now is apparent when driving on highway at highway speed.problem is unresolved as yet.

While driving at 40 mph, the vehicle caught fire without warning. The dealer states the fuel tank was the cause. Please provide additional information. *ph

Had gasoline smell for quite a while.the dealer informed me of a recall on a vapor vent hose for my van and replaced it but the gasoline smell never went away.i took it back a second time but the dealer could not find anything.less then a year and while driving with the same smell of gasoline coming through the a/c my vant caught on fire, and within seconds everything under the hood was engulfed in flames.i called nissan but they tell me the van is no longer under warranty so there is nothing they can do for me.

Nhtsa#00-v-419-001: vehicle description:minivans. The fuel tank vent hose allows air to vent from the fuel tank during refueling.cracks have developed in the vent hose.if (1) the fuel tank is overfilled, not allowing excess fuel in the vent hose to flow back into the tank. Secondly, the vehicle is driven only a short distance after refueling and. Third, there is subsequently significant heating of the fuel tank, the fuel in the tank can expand into the vent hose and leak fuel. Dealer didn't honor this recall due to the vin, and they charged $200.00 dollars to fix it. *ph

Can not fill up the van whit gasoline, stop fill in ,like if is full, and gasoline gauge indicates wrong reading

The contact owns a 1996 nissan quest. The contact noticed an abnormal fuel odor inside and outside of the vehicle while driving. The contact was unaware of a fuel leak under the vehicle or inside the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

My nissan quest just started with gas odor.

The latch on the sliding door made it impossible to open the door from the inside. Dealer has replaced the latch. Problem still exists.

Doors will locs and unlock by themselves without any reason.

Left front door locks at any time by themselves.

1.driver door lock will not open at lease once a day. Replaced actuator by dealer on 6/14/00, worked for about a year then started doing same thing again plus.2.sliding door opens and the ajar light comes on daily or whenever a bump in the road is hit.3. Rear door has to be opened and has to be manually reset for all the doors to lock.the number of failures, 1890 is an estimate, every time i drive this car, which belongs to my wife the doors act as described, my wife has been complaining since 1998. The dealer suggested replacing the locks, but after reading several of the other complaints from this site, i feel that this would not fix the problem.thank for your help.wayne plaisance*la

Door pops open intermittently when vehicle is in motion.locking door does not prevent door latch from popping open. Also dealer advised of cracks in the steering column where the bolts have torn away from the anchor positions.car has not been in any accidents and only has 50, 000 miles.

Door locks will lock/unlockintermittently, rear passenger side lighting assembly went out, sliding door will ajar while in operation, and tapping noise from engine has not been recognized by mechanics.

Door locks failed.

While driving at various speeds, the red door ajar light and overhead lights illuminate.the cause is the sliding door has popped open to first position all by itself.this has happened 6 times!

While driving vehicle at various speeds the door ajar light & dome light would come on & stay. The sliding door would come open in first position ,but not all the way. Has happened when the door would be locked. This happened every day. No matter if door was locked/unlocked. Sometimes could be locked out of vehicle. Been to dealer & mechanic replaced the lock assembly.#98b23 service bulletin.

While driving or even if the vehicle is parked, the sliding door lock will un-latch anddoor will open by itself and the interior lights will also come on. Ts

The right side sliding door will not remain closed.the dealer has adjusted it twice now.after the last adjustment the door came ajar almost immediately after leaving dealer.the dealer is currently suggesting that i replace both latches at an approximate cost of $265.00 although he cannot assure me that this will fix the problem since the latches did not appear to be broken when adjusted.

Door locks failed 4 times.

I submitted complaint request 10051248 in december 2003.no one has contacted me about the side door continually unlatching.

I have a nissan quest 1996 - i reported a door latch popping open in april 2001 when the car had 50,000 miles.since then the latch was replaced and has been adjusted a number of times.the door continues to fail and pop open or rather go ajar and the inside lights illuminate.this makes for a number of unsafe driving conditions.first the door could slide open all the way endangering my children.if i were to be in an accident, there is no guarantee that the door will remain closed and intact.third, driving at night and suddenly have the interior lights illuminate make it difficult to see and drive.the original complaint was odi745323.i recently spoke directly with jeff austin at nissan consumer division - phone number 1-800-nissan1 extension 8441.he indicated that there was not any record of this occurring in other vehicles and spoke to the dealership - they told me since i was the only complaint and the mileage was over 60,000 there was nothing that they could do to assist me and that i should seek body repair to resolve the problem.this has been occurring for the last 30,000 miles and is going on 4 years.i refuse to pay anything further to have this rectified.this is a defect and needs to be resolved to my satisfaction.i had spoken previously with dan neff (310) 771-5463 and the initial change of the lock mechanism appeared to help for a short period.i paid for that fix.shortly after i spoke with mr. Neff the problem began occurring again and has since that time.nissan has been unwilling to believe that there is a problem, and yet there have been numerous other incidents as demonstrated by the web page search including odi's 602908, 703853, 845494, 721420, 864190, 10049456, 863863, 754162, 602996, 848600, 745164, 745414, 10001339, 10022724i want this issue resolved, i want the door fixed and i do not feel that i am responsible for paying anything further to ensure that this defect is repaired to my satisfaction.

Sliding door on passenger side of van opens by itself.

When front of vehicle is on a hill, door latch would not work properly.sliding door will not remain open. Consumer felt this wasunsafe because if a child had to go through that doorit mightclose on the child.dealer was not able to do anything.*ml

Latches/locks on sliding door would open, whenever the vehicle passes over a rough surface.

At the slightest decline (nose facing downward) the sliding door will violently shut hitting whomever or whatever is in the path. If you are trying to remove something from the middle or back seat, you have to put your body in between the door and the door frame to keep it open.my son got his arm hurt just recently due to the force of the door shutting on him.to my knowledge, the door has never had any type of locking mechanism to hold the door open when needed.or if it was suppose to have one, my van's latch has never worked.i have done a search to see if there was a recall on this sitution, however did not find one.this has been an ongoing problem since purchased new but only now has manifested itself into the potential danger!something needs to be done and addressed to correct this protential life threatening sitution.

While driving the paasenger side sliding door will unlacth.

This vehicle's doors will lock randomly for no known reason.it happens whether running or not and is completely at random. It presents the possiblity of a small child being locked in the vehicle and if the keys are also in the vehicle the child could be trapped.

While drivingsliding doors opened without warning. Dealer notified.

While traveling on the highwaypassenger's sliding door opened intermittently because it wasn't closing properly.

All doors will lock under 3 scenarios:1) doors will relock immediately following, unlocking the doors.2) doors will lock after closing driver door.3) doors may lock without any action taking place.could be locked out of vehicle if doors lock when closing door, with keys in the vehicle.dealership replaced door lock actuator in 1998, problem started reoccuring in 2002 and continues to occur intermittently.

Sliding door pops open without prior warning. Dealership is aware ofproblem.

When driving engine checklight comes on. Also, transmission will get stuck in 3rd gear.

The indicator will not move when gear is shifted; will later jump into gear.

The column shifter is very "sloppy" and hard to get into the right gear. The shifter pops out of park.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Seat belts for front passenger and first row bench seat outboard passenger will not release and keep getting tighter around passengers.have tried to release belt and buckle again with same result.

Passenger seat belt failed.

Drivers side seat belt latch broken and completely unuseable.dealer says they will fix it "under a life time warranty because it is a safety device and has a lifetime warranty".

The problem with the seat belts on my nissan van is if you pull the seat belt most of the way out when putting it on then move forward it will lock up and only tighten never relaxing in order to lean forward. The only solution is to remove the seat belt and refasten. This is not a good idea while driving.

When the brake pedal was applied there was no resistance.pedale went to the floor, there was little response from the brakes, vehicle continued to roll before starting to slow down. This was at the speed of 25 mph. Dealer has been contacted.

Brakes: brake light constantly comes on, brakes shimmy and make a noise. Took to dealer;had rotors turned and brake fluid put in. Was still having problems, and took to dealer again several times and was told the vehicle was fine. Took vehicle to anotherdealer, andwas told the vehicle needs a master cylinder.

While applying the brake pedal driver heard a loud squeaky noise. The vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. The cause has not been determined. Consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.

The brake problem was diagnose as failure of the hydraulic piston located in brake calipers that enagages the brake to disengage and caused the pads to wear out to the metal damaging the disk brake.the dealer did all repairs under warranty

The power door locks on my 96 nissan quest have a mind of their own.the family calls them "crazy" and we have to make sure that we do not ever leave the vehicle without the keys in hand.i am retired and my wife and i baby sit some of our grandchildren, we pray that we don't forget about them "crazy" door locks while transporting the grand kids.i mentioned the problem to a local service rep. And he was well aware of the problem with the quest van power door locks.he indicated that they had been unable to fix the problem even after replacing all the power door locks.this left me with the feeling that a root cause had not been found and perhaps i would be notified in the near future of a "recall" or service bulletin to help with my "crazy" power door locks.after just seeing the cbs report tonight, it is apparent that many other have this same problem, but have not let nhtsa know.i just spent over $500 to fix the air bag light from coming on,to replace the control module, now i am wondering if the power door locks problem may be another bad control module.control modules that involve safety issues should be very reliable.

Door locks activate/deactivate autonomously.dealer indicates failed actuator and charges $160 to replace.

The power lockslocked on their own once the door was shut. Also, at times the key will not unlock the locks. This has caused consumer to lock the keys in the vehicle numeroustimes. Dealer has been contacted.

Lock mechanism works improperly. For instance, when door is opened all of the doors would automatically lock.consumer states while driving, locking mechanism will automatically lock on its own or, if out of the vehicle, or perhaps getting something, doors will automatically lock.

The door locks intermittently lock by themselves for no reason. The last time this happened, my two children were left locked in the car, in 110 degree weather while my wife frantically called the police to help get them out. This is a dangerous situation and nissan needs to issue a recall to fix this before someone gets killed.

On two occasions the power door locks failed resulting in two small children to be trapped in the vehicle outdoors in 100 degree temperature. Vehicle was taken to dealer six times, problem still exist.

Consumer states that while driving the sliding door will pop open even if door had been locked.*mr

The power door locks continually lock by themselves. Once, locking my 2 year old daughter in the van without it running. We live in texas, and it makes me sick to think what would have happened if i had not had an extra set of keys. I know from a cbs news report that my van is not the only one like we thought that this is happening to. Is it going to take a child's death for a recall to be issued? nissan told me to have it fixed myself. I cannot afford to do that. It happens too many times to count.

Doors will lock on their own without warning including when engine is running and no driver and/or passengers are inside.dealer has replaced parts, but problem still exists and seems to be getting worse.

I contacted performance nissan and also nissan corporation several times.they told me that there was nothing that they could do to fix my rear suspension cracking noise.all they could do was put rubber between the springs in hopes that it would take care of the suspension problems.well, it did for about 4 or 5 months, but the cracking noise is back and worse than before.i also complained about front suspension cracking noises but also was told nothing could be done.seat belts have been changed before, but are acting up again.they don't retract.the engine has knocking and pinging noises at all speeds, so i tried super unleaded to see if the engine knocking and pinging noises would stop, but they didn't.what concerns me the most is the fact that my suspension was inspected by nissan corporation and they themselves said that there was nothing they could do to fix the problem.again, like i said before, they put some kind of rubber between the springs to quiet the noise.it did not last.i have asked independent nissan dealers if they have ran into this problem.they said yes.they also told me that nissan knows that there is a problem and that they can fix it, but do not want to spend the money.i believe that they wanted for my warranty to expire so that i would stop complaining to nissan about their vehicle.pretty much, it seems like a bought a lemon.it has been in the shop so many times for just about every component.if the office of defects conducted an investigation and got records from performance nissan, in regards to my vehicle, they would see how many times i was in and how they inconvenienced me.thank you for taking the time to investigate my concerns.i hope that you are able to help me, since i could not get any results from nissan corp nor from performance nissan.thank you for your efforts.if paper work is needed to support my claims, i have plenty of it, i just need to look for it.
