My vehicle a nissan pathfinder was parked in my driveway after being driven approx 1 hour .approx 1 hour later after retuning home the parked vehicle started to burn up.the fire depatment reported that there might have been an electrical fire inside of the engine.if the car would have been in my garage my home would have been destroyed or worst.i find it very upsetting that the car was not in operationat the time of the fire.i don't know if this has happened in the past to other pathfinders but i certainly would like to warn anyoneoperating this type of vehicle not to feel that because they have shut the car off that all is well.i still can't accept what happened to me and what might have destroyed my life if i had left the car in the garage.i am also curious to know if this has been a problem that you have been aware of.

I am having multiple issues with my 1998 nissan pathfinder due to corrosion. The most recent incident was while i was driving my muffler fell off. I took it to a shop and when they raised the vehicle, the entire exhaust system had corrosion and holes from it. This was followed by last years strut housing corrosion which broke off the strut from the frame of the vehicle while i was driving. I lost brakes and had to step on pedal all the way, and then the vehicle gradually came to a stop. The recall notice came after the incident. This was followed by the previous year's gas tank corrosion which caused gas to drip. Also a recall notice came in and nissan dealer fixed issue.

While on my way to virginia from florida, my 1998 nissan pathfinder began to jerk, sputter, and cut off on interstate 95. So itookitto all tune & lube on friday morning for a tune-up, after they replaced the spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, oil change, new belts, reset timing, fuel injector cleaning. It still did the same thing, so dave at all-tune kept my truck four days running all kinds of test and still could not figure out the problem, he called a friend at nissan and he knew what the problem was. It was a casting flaw on the intake collector, leaking anti - freeze into the intake mixing with the gas and air. He told me that nissan knew about this problem and never recalled the pathfinder. The bulletin came out on april 1, 1999 t.s.b #ntb99-015. All-tune told me that it would cost me $700.00 dollars to fix this problem. I drove my fiancee to virginiato start her new job at v.c.u she has to take cab to work for $80.00 a day for a serious problem that nissan should have taken care of along time ago.

1998 nissan pathfinder truck sputtering and shuts off as im driving up interstate 95...intake flaw after your truck reaches 140,000 miles a mixture of gas,anti-freeze, and air spills into the intake system....thought it needed a full tune up had it towed to all tune and lube paid $700.00 for full tune up , replaced intake and distributor...nissan would not reimburse my money knowing it had a production line flaw on the vehicle.

The automatic transmission failed on my car.after traveling from philadelphia to queens ny approaching a stop light i slowed down while doing so the suv suddenly made a loud grinding noise and the engine reved very high however the output of the vehicle was only at a crawl.i imediately pulled over to the side of the road and shifted to park the loud grinding noise could be heard again only louder. This car was my first new purchase i routinely service it at the dealership, and now at 78,000 miles am found stranded in ny trying to replace the transmission.i have been researching the pathfinder only to find that the whole transmission is susceptible to over heating which cause metal deterioration in the trans itself.why haven't we heard of a recall yet! how long can this problem continue?

While driving 55 mph on the highway with the standard shift in 5th gear, the vehicle without warningwent into reverse, causing a collision. Cause unknown.please give any further details.

While driving my 1998 nissan pathfinder, with no warning, the vehicle began bucking and stalling until it would not drive.the car was towed to the local nissan dealership.the next day, we received telephone call from the service dept who informed us that the transfer case was damaged.the service rep told me that there was an internal defect on the part and that the problem was very uncommon.the transfer case is associated with the four wheel drive on the pathfinder - which is something we have probably used less than 10 times in the 4 1/2 years that we have driven the car.parts and labor on this repair would be approximately $2,500.i asked for nissan's customer service number and contacted them immediately.we were told that the part had to be specially ordered and wouldnot be fixed for 4-5 days.on the 4th day, we were contacted by the service dept to inform us that they had replaced the part, but that the transfer case had apparently damaged the transmission and that had to be replaced.this would be the total of repairs toapprox $5,000.again, i contacted the nissan's customer service because i had not gotten a telephone call from my original call.when we finally reached someone at the customer service dept we explained that we had gotten all the recommended preventative maintenace on the pathfinder.this was also the 3rd nissan we had purchased and up until now had been very satisfied with their reliability.given our purchase and maintenance history,we were led to believe from the service dept that nissan would give us a break on the repairs.in addition, we also believe that the defect should have been detected during our regular preventative maintenance (which totals in the thousands of dollars) and that what was an otherwise well maintained transmission was ruined by a defective product.nissan's final response was that we were out of warranty and they would do nothing for us.why was a defective product not recalled?*nlm

Drivers side safety belt does not retract. Passenger side retracts sometimes.

Seat belts do not secure the child safety seats properly, not tight enough.

While returning from a baseball game in new york city, on tuesday, september 12, 2000, my nine year old daughter fell asleep in the back seat of the pathfinder.somehow the seat belt she was wearing became twisted around her so that she had both the shoulder harness cacross her chest and the lap belt around her waist.when we stopped , she awakened, released her belt and the belt retracted.she began to cry saying that she was stuck and could not move.i went to her aide and tried to free her from the harness.unfortunately, with every move the belt just retracted and would not release.i asked her to try and slip out of the belt.big mistake.the belt retracted more until it was around the thinest part of her midrift.she began to have trouble breathing, and combined with the panic that was beginning to set in began to struggle even more.i tugged on that belt.i reassured her we would get her out.i closed the door and reopened the door.nothing would release that belt.i removed the plastic cap where the belt was contained.i had tools.i figured i couldsimply unbolt the strap.no dice.the bolt does not match up with the hole.now i had a choice to make.let the child suffer, rip the plastic coverings of the car off, or cut the belt.i cut the belt off my child.i thought this important enough to report for one major reason.what if there had been an accident and my child was strapped in the seat unable to move, and a fire ensued.we would both have been consumed.i know the belt works.it keeps one in place.however, maybe some safety device could be devised which when released would free the belt.i can only imagine what it will take before someone figures out that there is some danger to what i am reporting.

Traveling at about 55 mph in a right hand lane with the cruise control engaged, driver felt something odd in the left front of the vehicle, as if the driver-side front wheel collapsed. This was accompanied by the steering wheel turning sharply to the right and a loud "bang" under the vehicle in the vicinity of the left front suspension; the driver struggled to keep the vehicle on the road, but it was nonetheless pulled to the right, across the shoulder and into a ditch running paralllel to the road; after dropping into the ditch the vehicle continued to veer to the right and began climbing an embankment; the driver managed to pull the steering wheel hard to the left and point the vehicle back toward the road; as the vehicle moved down the embankment and back into the ditch, the front undercarriage of the vehicle bottomed out where the ditch ended at a driveway , which runs perpendicular to route 50, into a farm; the vehicle bounced back onto the road and crossed the two eastbound lanes; the driver managed to straighten the vehicle out in the center of the grass median and attempted to stop the vehicle; when applying the brakes, it was clear that they were inoperative, the pedal went completely to the floor, and as the driver glanced at the speedometer the vehicle was still traveling about 50 mph, a full quarter mile from where the incident began. Then the cruise control was still engaged, and was not being triggered "off" by application of the brakes. The steering wheel was still pulling hard to the right and the driver continued to struggle to keep the vehicle straight. But know the vehicle was starting to spin counter-clockwise, which caused the vehicle to leave the median area and spin twice ( 720 degrees ) into the oncoming traffic lanes. The vehicle finally stalled and came to rest pointing eastbound in the westbound left lane.

As i was approaching the end of an exit ' i put my foot on the brakes to slow down but instead the car took off at an excessive speed while i watched in horror and fearing for my life. It kept going until it hit a free . The car was totaled. I escaped with minor injuries. The problem i have is that i had dropped collision a few months before so now i'm out of a car and about $6,000.00 for which the car was more or less worth.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. While driving approximately 5 mph the contact heard a cracking noise in the steering wheel while turning in either direction. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the front strut towers were replaced. The failure continued after the repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and stated nhtsa recall campaign id number: 11v244000 (steering:column) was related; yet, the vehicle was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. The contact stated that the strut towers separated from the body of the vehicle. In addition the abs system malfunctioned as a result of the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who did not diagnose the problem and was awaiting for the manufacturers approval to repair it. Themanufacturer was made aware of the problem but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in recall nhtsa campaign id number: 11v244000 ( steering:column) . The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 189,000.

I discovered that the left front strut tower has begun to tear away from the rest of the body at its base.there is visible corrosion at the base.i recently noticed unusual swaying after hitting bumps at highway speed.the top of the strut tower is obviously out of alignment with the opposite tower.the brake line to the left front wheel is now under stress.there have been no known collisions with the vehicle.no known incident to cause damage.no heavy off-road.veh. Has been used to tow.

The strut housing on the driver's side rusted completely and broke . It causedthe inner fender totouch the brake master cylinder. I had to pay to have this repaired out of pocket, and then received a recall notice several months later. I would like to know what the next step is for reimbursement.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. The contact stated that there was severe rusting on the front drivers side strut housing and frame. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that they would spray a substance on the portion of the frame that was rusting. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The vin was unavailable.

Body rust in rear and undercarriage.

I have extensive rust on my car. I do believe that it is more than it should be. The fenders in front and back are rusted, front and back bumper are rusted, driver door by mirror has a hole from rust. I was wondering if this is normal for a 1998 nissan pathfinder se?*yt

I cant even drive down the street over 40 without the vehcle doing a death shake from hell to top that off due to the recall for the strut placement error causing my strut tower wall directly behind my passenger side front wheel to almost be completly gone from rusting out. This is total bullshit. Something gotta give. Im calling corporate in the morning. Hopefully they dont try to beat around bush with me like they do to all there customers they do wrong.

1998 nissan pathfinder le(84,000 miles)factory oem running boards rusting from mounting brackets to the point of separation from the vehicle.these 20+ pound pieces of metal falling onto a roadway and being hit by another vehicle could present a serious accidentrisk.have contacted nissan motors via letter (with pictures) and visited a local dealer.phone call from nissan motors denied any and all responsibility for poor design and inferior metal on this part.there must be many vehicles on the road with this potentially lethal defect.

Rear and front bumpers rusting away to the point where they offer no protection in the event of an accident.

Vehicle has been in aminor collision on the rear left side, and each time bumper has collapsed to the left side. Dealer has been contacted.

The front end of the vehicle was making a strange noise upon inspection i realized the front left strut tower separated from the chassie of the vehicle. After inspection from a registered repair shop they rendered the vehicle unrepairable due to safety liability.

This is for my nissan pathfinder 1998 model vehicle. From about 2008 i am noticing corrosion from under the vehicle. I was not able to find where to log a complaint, now i know. 1). The bottom of the car rusting completely i think.2. There is big noise from the bottom of the car feeling like something could be rusted and broken.3. The 2 side running boards are corroded and broken and separated from the vehicle.i don't feel safe driving this vehicle now.

Front left wheel well at strut mount has rusted through at 155000 making it impossible to drive car.have found other examples of this problem on the internet.problem could result in a serious accident if failure occurs while towing.dealer says car can be repaired for $3000.contacted nissan to see if they will pay for all/part of repair.

While driving about 60-65 mph vehicle started rocking from side to side. Took vehicledealer who replaced4 tension bars.

As i was driving on the highway, while accelerating, my suv started rocking from side to side. I had to apply the brakes in order for it to stop rocking. It felt as if my suv was going to rollover even though i was driving straight and at the speed limit. This has happened several times. It happened this morning while driving around 55 mph on a straight highway. It has also happened while on a curve but is even worse at that point.

At highway speeds our 1998 pathfinder begins to sway or shimmy from side to side and requires applying the brakes to stop the swaying.this is after spending $1000 on the front end for struts and other suspension items.this event is worse since we had the work done on the front suspension at the dealership.i have yet to take it back to the dealer.

My vehicle has two recalls on it - first one is the gas neck recall and the second is the strut housing causing steering problems.i took my vehicle in on may 2nd, 2011 to bergstrom/nissan in oshkosh.they checked out my vehicle and said that my vehicle has the problems regarding both recalls.it is september 8th, 2011 and they still have my vehicle.they called me this morning and told me that they braced up the front. Things should be good but that they took it for a drive and it is still all over the road.they also said that the part for the gas neck recall is on back order.they told me to come and pick up the vehicle.if they took it for a drive and it still is all over the road and there is still a problem with the steering - then i don't think it is safe and that they must not have done a good enough job fixing the problem.i don't want to drive an unsafe vehicle until they have corrected the problem.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. When the vehicle was taken in for inspection, the front driver's side strut assembly was fractured and separated from the uni-body. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that it was unable to be repaired. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,000.

My 1998 nissan pathfinder sways excessively when letting off the gas quickly or accelerating quickly. The sway is so excessive that driving at speeds over 60 mph are extremely terrifying because the vehicle feels like it is going to flip. The consequences of this could be deadly. I have replaced several parts within the suspension and the problem still remains.

I have a 1998 pathfinder se 4wd.on a recent trip to colorado, the car began to rock violently from side-to-side whenever we exceeded 70mph, depending on the type of pavement we were driving on.given we had a long drive (over 18 hrs), this was a big problem, and we were constantly fearing that the car would tip over.we had not seen the problem before as we don't do a lot of interstate driving normally.when we got to colorado, we attempted to get the vehicle fixed in a local garage.they replaced shocks, struts, and did an alignment.unfortunately, we couldn't get to the right speed (or perhaps have the right pavement) to reproduce the problem and we thought it was fixed.when we left and got back on the interstate, it started again.the vehicle is at the dealer now and they believe this is a fairly common problem.if so, i don't understand why there hasn't been a recall as this was the most scary thing i've ever had to deal with in a car in my life.

At certain speeds, the car starts swaying side to side in a very dangerous way (almost flipping over) and it's only stopped when there's a change in speed. I had the shocks replaced but the problem persists.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel began to wobble and the driver felt like she was going to lose control of the vehicle. The failure ocurred while driving at low speeds as well, but the degree of wobbling was lesser. The vehicle wobbled so much that the passengers became queasy. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis and the contact was informed that the vehicle needed new bushings, control arms, and struts. The manufacturer was notified and offered little assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 180,000.

I'm not sure i'm in the right place but... Both struts on the front of my pathfinder blew out.. When i spoke to the dealership they told me it happens all the time.. It wasn't unusal to see pathfinders with less miles and duel busted struts ... She concluded by saying two blow struts happens all the time.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, there was an abnormal clicking noise coming from the front end of the driver's side. The contact mentioned that while making a left turn to exit the highway, the front driver's side tire fractured. The contact was able to slowly drive the vehicle to his residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000.updated 10/10/14 the consumer stated the strut came off of the vehicle after exiting the freeway. According to the dealer both struts needed to be replaced. The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder.while driving 55 mph, the vehicle swayed abnormally back and forth and the contact almost lost control of the vehicle.he took the vehicle to a local repair shop and a mechanic replaced one control arm.the failure recurred immediately after the repair was made.the dealer stated that he needed to repair the upper and lower control arm.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure mileage was 84,000 and current mileage was 96,000.

Our 1998 pathfinder has what is described by many people as a "death wobble." it began after we bought it in 2003 and has happened several times since.it happened as recently as 2017 and i am beginning to be afraid to ride in it.at speeds between 40-70 mph the car begins to violently shake from side to side. It gradually gets worse.reducing your speed does help. It appears to begin because of a small, uneven place in the highway road, but then doesn't stop shaking back and forth, side to side.it has happened repeatedly even after having it supposedly fixed.each time we have taken it to be repaired the service personnel are familiar with this problem callling it a "death wobble" and replace the struts and other affected parts.it's very expensive. We've done this 2-3 times but after a couple years it happens again. Can you please help owners of the nissan pathfinder with this defect?it's extremely unsafe and terrifies both driver and passengers.please search online: 1998 nissan pathfinder death wobble and you will read hundreds of posts and utube videos about this problem. Please help us.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. The contact stated the manufacturer recently issued a voluntary recall regarding strut corrosion (reference number: r1108). The vehicle was repaired for the same defect two years ago. The contact stated the front driver side strut was defective due to excessive corrosion. The vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic at the owner's expense. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The contact expressed the repair should had been included in the voluntary recall remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000.

1998 nissan pathfinder. Consumer writes in regards to recall concerning strut tower corrosion *tgwthe consumer sent in a paid invoice with the repairs related to the recall.

While traveling about 35mph on the highway and without prior warningupper ball joint broke on the rear passenger side.

Shock absorber leaks. Apparently such a high volume of defects, that there is a 1-6 month wait. Concerned because continued use may cause lost contact of road, loss of steering, and unstable ride. Could result in accident with seriuos or deadly consequences. Dealer says they are changing manufacturers because of the problem, but no recalls have been made.

1998 nissan pathfinder 200,000 miles. July 2008.driving on freeway around 60-70 mph, any change in road surface ( ie going over bridge) sends rear of vehicle into severe wobble.acceleration seems to be only way to recover.around large curves ( turnpike in pennsylvania) feels very unstable.all shocks/struts had been replaced in last year except r rear, so upon return from trip had r rear replaced.did not fix problem.mechanic unable to tell what else is causing problem except wide wheel wall of new tires, but these have been on car for 5 months and problem did not occur before this.4 months later received call from mechanic stating same vehicle different owner in with same problem, but worse, investigated to find tsb (ntb98-001) for rear upper/lower link bars and bushings needing to be replaced.mechanic advised it was a significant safety risk to continue driving vehicle without repair, especially as have teenage driver in family, and should be repaired asap, at cost of $800-$1000.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder.the contact stated that when traveling at speeds above 50 mph, the rear end would sway from side to side and become difficult to control.the dealer inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that the upper and lower sway bar links needed to be replaced.the manufacturer had not been notified nor was the vehicle repaired.the current mileage was 170,000.the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

Swaying action from the rear of vehicle when vehicle is traveling 60mph or higher.

While driving at 60 mph the vehicle began to shimmy from the rear end from side to side.it felt like i would loose control of the vehicle.i regained control by taking my foot off of the gas.the problem came back repeatedly -- at least 20 times during my trip on interstate 80 while bringing my daughter back to college. The proplem was not related to any specifice roas surface condition.it woul happen out of the blue.the road could be flat and smooth.it did not matter. I am sure that i would have lost control of the vehicle if it had happened during the winter and there was snow or even worse ice on the road. Since i had just purchased the vehicle used, i took it that afternoon and had a wheel alignment(front and rear) and i had the tires balanced hoping that this would correct the problem.however, on the way home the next day from the college the problem was still there.this is a very dangerous problem and i can only compare it to when you see a car towing a trailer behind it and the trailer begins to sway from side to side.i also understand that this problem happens to many models of the nissan pathfinder covering at least the years 1997, 1998 and 1999 and it is not related to any specific mileage on the vehicle.it could happen at 15,000 miles or 90,000 miles.this is a very serious problem and is caused by a design failure of the bushings (there are 4 of them) that are part of the control arms.

Vehicle leans noticiably to the left, even when parked with no cargo.the dealer showed me a service bulletin that stated the leaning was "acceptable" by their standards.i feel that the leaning can affect the dynamic handling of the vehicle and can cause or aggravate handling problems.

Rear swaying of vehicle ( 98 nissan pathfinder) when vehicle is traveling over 60 mph.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder.while driving 60 mph or greater, the rear of the vehicle sways left to right.the tire shop stated that the vehicle needed new tires and shocks.the shop made the replacement, however, the failure persists.the dealer has not inspected the vehicle.the vin and engine size were unknown.the current mileage was 90,000 and failure mileage was 85,000.

98 nissan pathfinder - extreme rear end sway occurring at highway speeds. Result of faulty upper & lower rear arm bushings. This should be a recall as it creates an extremely dangerous uncontrollable back and forth sway at normal highway speeds.

I have a 1998 nissan pathfinder se and have loved it since the day i got it. Until the yesterday when i was driving home from a football game about 110 miles away from home. When i was on the highway doing 65 mph +/- 5 mph, the rear end would start wobbling uncontrollably. It is very dangerous and very unsafe. I did some research online to find the problem ( to save myself money ) and it seems that i am not the only person that has had this problem, nissan themselves have a site that addresses the issue, but no recall has been made. What has to be done for the automotive company to say " hey this isn't safe, we should get this fixed for our valued customers" i have been driving nissans for 10 years now and have been thoroughly disappointed in the way it seems the manufacturer is handling this. I think this should be recalled so that everyone with a 1996-1998 pathfinder doesn't kill themselves or someone else on the road with the wobbles.

98 nissan pathfinder have the side-to-side wobble, mostly in the rear, at speeds from about 50 to 65 mph.finally found rear upper and lower suspension links got problem. From website, i found this happened to so many nissan owners. It is definitely a design problem, which is very dangerous!!

Vehicle leans to left.dealer provide service bulletin that recognized defect but felt it is still within norms.this imbalance can affect handling, especially while turning.this leaning is very noticeable.

My 98 nissan pathfinder sways uncontrollably from side to side when driving on uneven roads and freeway which could cause to loose control of the vehicle and crash.numerous owners have reported the same problem on the internet and have been identified as a problem with the rear suspension control arm bushings and may include the control arm itself also known as upper and lower link arms.updated 10/22/07

Refer to internal nissan motors -technical service bulletin -ntb98-001. Bushing failure on upper and lower rear control link arm bushings that result in excessive rear sway in the vehicle and loss of control at high speedsthis is well described by multiple owners all over the internet and costs over 800 dollars to repair and is well described in nissans tsb so why no recall?how many people have to have a wreck for this to be done?

While driving 60mph the rear of vehicle shakes violently, it was discovered theat the suspension links were worn out.

Vehicle has had alignmentproblems from time of purchase. Dealer could not correct problem. Currently, consumer was told that swaybar was inoperable. Nissan willing to replace swaybar under warranty, but not tires.

Clunking sound in the rear when coming to a stop. Dealer could not determine cause.

I have noticed that at speed of up to 70mph the backend of my truck starts to shimmy back and forth.if continued at that rate of speed the sway gets worse to the point where it feels like the truck is going to flip over.the only way to correct it is to let off the gas.i have noticed that i am not the only one that has had this problem.this seems like a mechanical defect in the design and should be considered by nissan for a recall.

Tire is showing signs of severe wear on the outside, face surface near the wedge as opposed to the wear being on the part of the tire that is in contact with the road.the wear is to the extent that the steel threads have come through and are exposed.

We own a 1998 nissan pathfinder and for some reason we have lost our reverse but still have our park, neutral and drive, and 4 wheel drive. We were told that it could be the clutch pack that needs replaced but then after talking to the mechanic that inspected it for us he said that he thought we might be looking at a new transmission. Is there any recalls for this reason for this truck?

Driving down the hwy and suv started rocking back and forth side to side severely..i had to brake fast ..then when i accelerated it wobbled worse...i thought i was going to roll...could not go over 30...very dangerous and scary...i looked it up on forums to see if anyone else has had this problem....everybody that owns them has had this experience at all different mileages..they refer to it as the "death wobble" online...millions of vehicles have this problem from faulty bushings and trailing arms....yet they "nissan" refuse to recall or pay to fix it...here is "nissans" bulletin i found after researching online....they should be paying for this and there should be a recall...i hope that this gets some attention before someone gets killedservice bulletinclassification: ra97-002reference: ntb98-001date: april 1, 1998pathfinder vehicle pull and front/rear suspension excessive playapplied vehicle: 1996-98 pathfinder (r50)applied vin: vehicles built before jn8ar05y*ww256932service informationif a 1996-98 pathfinder exhibits the following conditions, the cause may be from worn bushing(s) in the rear suspension upper and/or lower links.* excessive play in the rear axle especially during moderate acceleration or deceleration.* vehicle pulling at a constant speed* excessive sway and rocking motion in the front suspension when coming to a stop.

I have a 1998 nissan pathfinder, there are severe problems with the accelerator. Whenever i give it gas to make it driver, the gas pedal, "sticks" and then unexpectedly "catches" and send the vehicle almost out of control. It's been this way since i bought it, used, over a year ago. Yet it's getting worse. Very dangerous, indeed.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. While driving approximately 60 mph, the accelerator pedal stuck and continued to accelerate the vehicle. The brakes did not function when applied and the steering wheel was stiff.the contact had to jump from the vehicle in order to escape from the vehicle. The vehicle crashed through the bypass and down another street into oncoming traffic but did not crash into any other vehicle. The contact did not sustain injuries. The insurance company contacted the manufacturer and was awaiting a response. The vehicle was destroyed. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 207,000.

While driving at 5 mph vehicle experiencedsudden acceleration, drove through it, and crashed into the rear of another vehicle.

When consumerstarted the vehicle , there was a loud noise, when gas was applied, vehicle would accelerate. Please provide more details.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan pathfinder. The contact stated that the brakes failed. The contact stated that she depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle accelerated causing her to crash into a brick wall. The contact stated that the air bags deployed and injured the front passenger's eyes and her hand.a police report filed. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 200,000. The accelerator pedal became stuck, at speeds of 50 mph and above, also after coming to a stop.

This is the second 1998 nissan pathfinder i've owned with the same problem.the throttle sticks in the upright position forcing one to apply great force to proceed from a stopped position.this has been dangerous on more than one occasion and near misses have occured especially when stopped behind another vehicle at a traffic light.

My pathfinder has been involved in two similar incidents in a span of 5 months. The first incident occurred on march 11,2003 (please see odi number 10036981).it is my opinion that a vehicle malfunction caused both incidents.it is a fact that repairs ordered by the dealer (bg fuel induction service)on march 12,2003 did not address the problem. Second incident: on aug. 21,2003, at approximately 8:00 am, i drove the pathfinder to the second floor of my school parking garage.the parking spaces are at a right angle to the building outside wall; therefore, a driver is required to describe a small arc to park a vehicle within the two boundary lines painted on the floor.i usually park away from other vehicles, if possible, to avoid opening-door contact with vehicles already parked. As the steering wheel is being turned to park in a specific spot, a vehicle usually moves slowly because of its own forward motion when in drive;therefore, it's normal to keep a foot on the brake pedal to come to a final stop.a narrow sidewalk separates the parking area from the building outside wall.i approached the sidewalk slowly to avoid hitting the curb with the tires.suddenly, the pathfinder lurched forward, hitting the curb at a high speed.i was not able to stop the vehicle even though i pressed the brake pedal fully.the vehicle climbed on the sidewalk and hit the wall.the impact on the wall caused both front air bags to be activated, the windshield cracked on the passenger side, and the car alarm went off as the front fender hit the wall. I received cuts and bruises on both arms, probably caused by by the seat belt and the air bag.the pathfinder suffered $ 7,218.74 in damages.building property damage (still undetermined) was also caused.the wall on each floor of the parking garage is made of pre-stressed concrete slabs about 4 or 5 feet tall and reinforced with stretched steel cables.the concrete slab cracked and bent slightly outwards along the middle;fortunately, it did not collapse.

Re: 98' nissan pathfinder sethe gas pedal sticks when the car is completely stopped.when you try to accelerate it sticks, so you have to push hard on the pedal which causes the car to jump forward and accelerate.

When i tried to accelerate my vehicle, the gas pedal will sometimes stick and when i get enough pressure on the pedal it will then lurch the vehicle forward.the brakes squeal continuously when the weather is above freezing.i have had it in numerous times to the local nissan dealer and they can not find anything wrong with them.the vehicle's abs systems seems to grab before it should when the ground is dry with gravel or there is snow or ice on the ground. Consumer states the accelerator pedal sticks when at a stop, causing the vehicle to lurch foward when it catches.

Accelerator pedal would stick when trying to accelerate.contacted dealership, and mechanic could not find the cause of accelerator pedal sticking.

When depressing the acceleratorpedal from a dead stop, nothing happens. Suddenly the pedal catches and vehicle lurches.problem was reported to the dealership and has been corrected.manufacturer commented that this problem is considered a routine maintenance, which concerns the owner.*ml

On march 11, 2003, my nissan pathfinder was involved in an incident of unexplained sudden acceleration.the vehicle was already shifted into drive, and my foot was on the brake pedal while i was waiting for a red light to change.suddenly, the pathfinder lurched forward at a high speed.almost simultaneously, i heard a loud noise coming out of the motor.the noise sounded like the one produced by an increase in the number of motor revolutions.i turned off the engine immediately when i realized that that i could not stop the vehicle by depressing the foot pedal.fortunately, no persons or vehicled were at the street intersection when the vehicle jumped forward.my wife was in the passsenger's seat at the time.on march 12, 2003, i took the pathfinder to nissan's service department to correct this problem.nissan's service advisor told me that the vehicle needed a clean-up of the entire fuel system.so, he scheduled a bg fuel induction service to rectify the problem.the pathfinder had 32,149 miles at the time.my records show that maintenance on the pathfinder has been performed as scheduled at bill seidle's nissan.prior to the incident, a major routine maintenance had been scheduled and performed at 30,000 miles on oct. 16, 2002.no additional failure occurred until aug. 21, 2003 (the day of the accident).
