I received a recall notice in the mail

Hi! i got in a small accident. Nothing even happened to the car, it has no dents at all. It was a crash at low speed the airbags got activated anyways which would be ok if the following didnt occur. Ihad my seat belt on. My friend was driving my car and i was in the passenger side. All i recall is the airbag releasing and soon after having intensive bleeding all around my face. I was taken immediatly to a hospital and had to get 8 stiches in my eyelid of my left eye. Also i got several scars in my cheeks and foreheads. The airbag seemed to have burned right threw my skin, also tearing my eye lid area. I have lost 5 vision in my left eye. And have a cut in my cornea, and retina. I use to have 20/20 vision and now have 15/20. I also have several scars till todays date which are noticible. My eye doctor told me my left eye pupil will remain large most certainly for the rest of my life. There for i have a normal pupil and a large one which was caused by the accident. The airbag damaged my face very much. I am a 19 year old teen with permanent wounds because of the force of an airbag which wasnt even necessary for it wasnt a big crash. Nothing happened to neither car. Everything just happened to me.

While driving at 30/35 mph ,vehicle was in a frontal collision, and none of the airbags deployed upon impact. Vehiclewas totaled.ts

My son wrecked my car when he attempted to make an unsafe left turn.the speed of the vehicles were about 10 mph for the nissan and about 40 mph for the other vehicle (ford explorer).the front of the nissan is gone and the airgabs didn't deploy.luckily, they were not needed and there were no injuries, but i feet that the impact should have activated them.i talked to the dealer and asded that they send someone to look at the car but they have not taken my request seriously.i just got a number for nissan corp that i plan to call.

Consumer was driving at approximately 45 mph and rearended another vehicle, but dual airbags did not deploy.a nissan dealer stated the because the sensors are located on the left/right and center of the frame and not onthe bumper .the airbagsdidnot deploy even with $5,000 worth of damage to the front end.

Vehicle was involved in a 73 mph frontal collision hitting a guardrail and trees.upon impact,driver/ passenger air bagsdid not deploy, cause unknown. Driver sustained injuries.please give any further details.

While driving consumer was involved in a collision. Air bags deployed. However, consumer hit head on windshield hard enough to spider crack it. Consumer sustained a minor concussion and bruising of the forearm and elbow, and strained her neck muscles.

While pulling into a parking lot hit a small 12-inch wall with left side bumper, and airbag deployed.

Vehicle was involved in a bumper rear end accident and air bags didnot deploy at 5mph. Feel free to provide further information.

A car ran a red light and turned in front of me i tried to stop but the carbrakes locked and the car started skidding.i couldn't control the car and it skid into the rear of the car that pulled in front of me.the collision was hard enough to fold my hood in half but the airbag never deployed.i went to the emergency room with chest pain and a numb left arm and hand.the airbag failed to deploy.

My car was struck by another driver while crossing an intersection.my bumper and headlights were both torn from the car, but the airbag in my nissan altima gxe (98) did not deploy.i wastreated at an urgent care center for neck, back and arm pain that day.

While driving at 40/45 mph vehicle wasinvolved in a frontal collision. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy.

Vehicle was struck atrear tandem axle on driver's side of 30 or more mph, both air bag did not deploy. Dealer was notified.

Consumer was in head on collision and the air bags didn't deploy upon collision. Ts

Air bag light system continually appeared on the dashboard. Dealer statedthat sensor went out.

The car was idle at a red light when it shut down completely (engine, radio, lights, etc).it would not start again.i got a jump and it started.the next day it started fine.i let it idle for about 15 minutes and it was okay.i drove it for a few minutes and it died again.i had it towed to a repair shop.none of the diagnostic tests showed anything wrong (battery, alternator, etc. Were okay).they drove it and it did not die again.i took it to a nissan dealer and they cannot find any problems either.

While applying the accelerator pedal vehicle failed to accelerate. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that computer needed to be replaced.

Car shutting off while driving, relay switch replaced because

Several times the vehicle wouldn't start, i had to have it jump started.usually happened after it had been driven for a short time, stopped and then tried to restart.one time it wouldn't start even with a jump.battery was replaced and it continued to happen.dealership could not duplicate the problem.all readings for battery and alternator came back normal.

After starting vehiclebattery exploded, casing had cracked.

Battery exploded upon start of vehicle. Vehicle shook when battery exploded.also, battery acid leaked. Consumer got some battery acid in eyes. Consumerwas breathing the gas from battery. Contacted dealer, and dealer statedbattery was faulty.battery acid sprayed all over the engine compartment, front body panels, front bumper, and the hood was dented because of the battery failure.

Upon starting the engine, the car battery exploded. As a result, i had to purchase a new battery. The car also suffered hood damage. I notified nissans consumer affairs dept. And they said that they will respond within three working days.

Batteryblew up soon asconsumer turned onvehicle. There was some damage tovehicle on hood and around the area of the battery.

After arriving home safely from a long highway drive (7 hrs), our car sat for about 5 hours.when i started the car, i smelled smoke and heard a unusual rubbing noise under the hood.after popping the hood, i saw smoke pouring out of the alternator.i turned off the engine, went inside to get a fire extinguisher.the fire was still burning, but seemed to be inside the alternator.i extinguished it and hopefully saved serious engine damage.the car was towed to the dealer, and is awaiting service now.

The electrical system failed and sometimes the car won't start.i replaced the alternator and battery, but it still happens.

While driving could press horn to alert other drivers, but horn was not as loud as it should be. Consumer saidhorncould not be heard that much.

Hornisso low, if another driver has window up,consumerwon't be able to here the horn. Almost caused several accidents.dealer contacted.

Vehicle caught on fire after it had been parked for more than 8 hours.owner contacted the manufacturer and nothing was done.

The ignition switch fuse failed, causing all operations to malfunction.

Oil sludge in engine.

I own a 1998 nissan altima. About a week ago there was heavy flooding

Piston failed. Mjs

Bracket bolt in engine compartment was missing.yh

During cross-country trip, vehicle began emitting metallic whining noise and clicking in engine compartment, not audible from passenger compartment. When i returned home, i performed regular tune-up maintenance, checked my valve clearances and timing adjustments.shortly after i started my vehicle again, my lower timing chain snapped. After a lengthy disassembly, i discovered that a piece of black plastic from a chain guide had broken away and fused with the chain, causing it to seize and break. Also, the lower chain tensioner had been completely eaten through by the chain (not as a result of poor servicing; i changed my oil every 3000 miles and checked/topped it off every 2 weeks) the incident caused $600 in parts damage, and could easily have cost $1500 in labor at a mechanic or dealership.the chain breakage destroyed my oil pump, crankshaft sprocket, lower chain cover, lower chain tensioner, guide (beyond original breakage) and oil pan baffle / sump tube.since nissan had initiated a "tsb" before i ever purchased my altima, no compensation was even considered. Obviously the tsb process does not include checking vehicles as they are brought in for maintenance, as i had regularly had my car serviced by the dealership for a full year post-purchase.i replaced the defective chain guide with the upgraded nissan component, a metal-backed guide track, and shall soon inspect my timing again to ensure that the repairs performed indeed corrected the problem.two recommendations: first, the tsb process needs to be addressed, as it obviously does not effectively safeguard consumers against engineering blunders such as this; second, automotive manufacturers should be held accountable for quality of product in terms of mechanical soundness as well as safety. If state corporation commissions can regulate service quality and pricing for every service agency in their sphere, i think the federal government should have the same leverage over automotive manufacturers.

Engine skips with strong jerking when moderately accelerating.

Owner states while accelerating engine misfires, causing poor performance of vehicle.dealer ran diagnostic test and found no fault code.

Vehicle has no power when driving, cannot accelerate correctly or speed up whenconsumer wants to. Contacted three dealerships, and all three they could not findcause of problem.

Ihave contacted the dealership where my service had been done on all of my complaints and have gotten no satisfaction.

Intermittently when accelerator pedal is pressed the vehicle will cut off.dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem.

Vent control valve assembly failure.

1998 nissan altima developed problems with the check engine light illuminated, problems with the gas tank, and the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced.*mrwhen the consumer attempted to fill the tank, gas would spill out.

Rotten egg/sulfur smell emitted from exhaust.first service performed on vehicle was to replace the on-board computer.this did not fix the problem.took the car to another dealership and they said there wasn't a "fix" available.a workaround to avoid the smell is to burn premium gasoline.premium gasoline does eliminate the odor, but the manual says i need to burn gas rated at 87 octane.i shouldn't have to burn premium fuel, which is much more costly, to avoid this problem.i believe this problem to be a engineering defect, and want the problem resolved.

Air conditioner failed resulted in leakage. Mjs

Service engine soon light came on due to sensors in gas tank.i was unable to put gas in the tank because it would spit back out.when it was taken in for service i was told that this was a very common problem and that one part alone was $300.*la

Very hard to put gasoline in car. It spits back out at you. You have to pump the gas in very slow. I've notice 2 different places where it mentions, trouble putting gas in these cars.bulletin date: feb 1998 diagnostic procedure for slow fuel fill. When putting gas in the tank it splashes back out of tank. *nlm

I cannot fill gas into my gas tank. The gas tank also splurts out gas whenever this is attempted creating a serious fire hazard. *nlm

Whenever i try to fill my gas tank, the fuel backs up after filling 2-3 gallons and spills out. This is the 2nd summer season i am having this problem. Last summer my mechanic said the tank appeared fine. I have to fill the tank very slowly and i often still experience this backsplash of fuel. This happens 70% of the time.

Consumer notice while filling vehicle with fuel, and without any indication, fuel sprayed back out. Dealer has been contacted.

While attempting to fill the gas tank the automated pump will stop. When the attendant does it manually gas will shoot out all over, creating a fire hazard. As the gas is put in slowly by the attendant the hose leading from the pump to my gas tank vibrates violently.*la

I can't fill gas into my gas tank at once. The gas spits out. It takes about 15 minutes to fill it up.

Gas gauge sending unit failure.

Tried to fill gas tank, only accept small amount before spilling on ground.check engine light came on.

Gas goes in very slowly when added to vehicle, then there is an overflow from back of pump before the tank is filled.i was told i have problem with evaporative emission control system vent control circuit.

Since i purchased my car in 7/98, i've had to bring my car in to the service for more than 7 times.recently, i was told by my mechanice that my coolant and the transmission are leaking.i am extremely frustrated with all the problems i've had with this car.i've contacted nissan once, and wrote letters twice, but nothing has been escalated.please help.

1.was driving south on hwy 101 in california at 60 mph.2. Brakes failed to slow car down, only released an odor as the pads appeared to be smoldering.accelerator appeared to be frozen and for a coupleminutes actually accelerated.3.applied brakes repeatedly, pulled on hand brake, pressed on cruise control on off switch, pressed on cruise control cancel and set switches.up until then the cruise control was not working at all anyway.but, it appeared that cruise control was on and non-responding to the brakes.went past exit and continued down highway toward gilroy, ca with no ability to stop vehicle.after approximately 10 miles, car began to slow down by itself and i exited.while driving on a city street, on the same day, the incident occurred again while traveling 30 mph.i was able to force the transmission into neutral and stop in the right lane of traffic by pulling forcefully on the emergency brake.at the auto shop, i was shown completely disintegrated brakepad on the left and a paper thin brakepad on the right.both rotors were 80% covered with large black blotches.brakes and rotors were replaced one week later.

Transmission slipping, will not shift past 2nd gear, all required maintainance, services have been performed.nissan will not help. Cost of needed repairs approx $5,000.

While driving front side axle broke, causing loss of vehicle control.vehicle has been checked by dealer.

I'm afraid to drive the speed limit in my state becuse a noise is coming from the right rear of the vehicle. After purchasing this vehicle i went to the dealer and told him to listen to the noise and he said it was normal(i have the paperwork to prove that i was there). I continued to drive the vehicle and now the noise is much more pronounced. I dont know what the problem is, i am a servicemember on a tight budget, i have to drive cross country on a regular basis, and i am afraid everytime i get into this car that the wheel is going to fall off. I am out of warrantee on this car so any repairs that the dealer will make i know will be costly. Am i supposed to wait until i kill myself in a freeway accident before nissan will do anything about this? this is the first new car i have ever owned, shouldn't there be some type of policy that dealers need to inform their costumers about the warrantee on the vehicles? i didnt know that i could have taken it to any other dealer accross the country and have them look at it. I do now. All i know is that i will never purchase another nissan again. I'll stick to beefing up an old chevy from now on.

This is a concern issue...the adjustable shoulder belt anchor protrudes from side post 1"at my height seat adjustment it places my head alongside this anchor post. On a side impact (with no side bags available on this model year) couldn't this cause severe (unnecessarily) head injury ?

In march 2001, i had my child in a car seat buckled in the back middle seat.when i went to get her out of her car seat when we stopped the lap belt was broke.i had it replaced in april and the same thing happened.i went to the dealership for a different kind of seat belt and they said all they can do is order the same one they replaced that broke which i don't want because it isn't safe it can't hold a 30 lb. Kid.when i called 1-800-nissan1 the lady on the phone told me that it isn't meant for car seats it puts too much of a strain on the seat belt causing it to break.i called the highway patrol because that is wear they install it and they said under no circumstances should a seat belt break.it is also in the car manual to install the car seat in the middle of the back seat as well.i am lucky that i wasn't involved in an accident that may have severly injured or killed my daughter.i think the public should be aware of this problem.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan altima. Upon starting the vehicle and shifting from park to drive, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to engage as it traveled to the floor. The contact stated that the vehicle stopped once it crashed into the neighbor's parked vehicle. Both the driver and passenger air bags deployed. The contact sustained a cut to the left hand that was bleeding, but did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they would send a field inspector to inspect the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

It was a rainy day and i was following traffic, i was going about 30mph when i had to take a curve. I 'gently' hit brakes to slow for the curve when my brakes locked up sending me straight into oncoming traffic where i hit a hummer h3. Luckily neither of us were going that fast through the curve so little damage was done. But this wasn't the first time the breaks had locked up on a slippery surface, yet it doesn't occur very often, infact the abs had check out ok a month prior. But still i thought abs was invented to stop that from happening and yet i know the breaks lock up when they shouldn't have.

Squeaking sound in brakes each time applied.

Driving 60-65mph the steering wheel was loose; lot of play. Would happen on straight roadway. Vehicle would drift either right or left. Had an accident. Will be taking to dealer.

Consumer stated a local dealership is refusing to perform a front end alignment, when an independent mechanic examined the vehicle, the inner and outer tie rods appeared to be defective, and needed to be replaced before an alignment could occur, instead of an alignment they suggested tire mainpulations, however the problem still exists.*jg

I feel as though i have no steering control of the vehicle at 60 mph + the vehicle drifts left and right while at those speeds but its tough to correct since the steering is so loose.it recently had an alignment and new tires but the problem still persists

It happened again on my drive to cooper hospital, the car veers all over the road, it is not a steering problem, it is underneath the car.....please help me, i will get killed in this car......it seems to want to jump to the left or right when ever it feels like it, no matter the speed.of course it is more disturbing when one is driving on a major road like 676.

The contact owns a 1998 nissan altima. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle exhibited an unusual grinding noise as the vehicle abnormally veered to the right. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic testing, who advised that the strut weld became dislodged from the mounting.the contact was advised that the sway bar, bushings, mounts and the strut assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 10e002000 (suspension). The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 168,000 and the current mileage was 169,500.

My car was all over the road while driving at 55, 60 mph.it does it at slower speeds too but we were almost killed this time. It seems to want to go to the left or right when ever it feels like it.i just bought it from a private person not too long ago.
