C.a.r.c. Rear differentialpinion bearing retainernut loosened while driving on a straight level road. Upon deceleration a loud howl was heard. Upon disassembly the pinion shaft tapered roller bearing cage had released rollers into thering gear area. . if they were to have moved into the gear meshit would have locked the rear wheel, causing a deadly crash. The pinion bearing preload nut was found loosened and totally off the threadslaying in the housing. It's crush locking ring was not engaged and staked fully into the retaining grooves. The unit is not repairable as parts and tools are not available to the dealer.
