The horn randomly sounds off during the night. I've discovered its a temperature thing. When its cold or the interior cools down the horns starts to blow, but when warm everything is fine. So mostly at night this occurs. This should be a recall! as the connection ring inside the airbag is clearly faulty. The only fix is to replace the air bag or pull the fuse to the horn. How is this safe?i just bought this car and found the horn didn't work. There was no fuse! so i replaced it and that's when the problems occurred. Clearly the fuse was missing for this very reason.
1) event leading to the failure is unknown.2) the alarm system goes off for no reason at all times of day or night. Frequency is from minutes to several hours. The horn honks and lights flash until the alarm is reset or until the battery dies.3) fuses removed but alarm still operates. Horns disconnected but lights still flash. The safety issue is that there is no way to turn off the alarm or disable the alarm without also turning off the horn. Reportedly, inorder to fix the problem a switch behind the air bag must be replaced which also requires replacing the airbag. Replacing the airbag is potentially dangerous and over $1000. There is no way to turn off the alarm in a safe manner. Consumers should be able to totally disarm or turn off the alarm system simply and safely.
I have had an issue with my truck because the horn quit working several years ago. I was told by the dealer multiple times that the airbag has a metal ring inside of it that makes contact to activate the horn when pressed. They claimed the ring has either deteriorated or broken internally and that is why the horn doesn't work and is a very common issue for years with these trucks. Based on the current recalls i am wondering if that also effects the airbags and if they will work properly or if there could be metal shards in there that when deployed could pose a safety issue.
The horn stays on.had to unplug it.it is part of the air bag in the steering wheel.
Roll over accident in 2001 montero ltd.at 65 mph the truck was rolled over 2.5 times and ended up resting on the passenger side.of the four airbags available, not one deployed.the drivers side rear passenger exterior door skin, passenger side front interior and exterior door skins were completely removed.the roof was resting on the steering wheel.passenger side windshield pillar separated at body.drivers side headrest bent at 90-degree angle towards hood.pictures available upon request.
While driving 50 mph a deer ran in front of the vehicle and was hit.upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. Driver lostcontrol of vehicle, itskidded into a guard rail, and flippedover before rolling down a hill. No injuries were reported. Vehicle was totaled by the insurance company.
Randomly the factory alarm goes off throughout the day with the horn blaring. After a while, the alarm drains the battery, even if it resets. Fuses have been changed, relays, and a reset by disconnecting the battery- to no avail.
Was involved in a head on collision with another vehicle traveling at 50mph and i was traveling at 50mph. The other car was totalled and my car is significantly damaged 50% of the front of the car and to the driver side door. Due to the newness of this car and minimal crash test information available, i am extremely concerned that the airbags did not deploy. I feel they should have and demand diagnostic testing and proof that the srs is functioning properly. Most crash testing is performed at 30mph at which they do deploy. How do i get reassurance that this vehicle is safe and not malfunctioning?
Was traveling 40mph when another vehicle came out in front unexpectedly, andvehicle was "t" boned. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. Driver suffered abdominal/ leg , and neck injuries;front passenger suffered neck and hand injuries; andrear passenger suffered right knee andarm injuries. All received emergency treatment andreleased.consumer stated that mitsubishi motors were notified, first they sent out an inspector, the test was done on the vehicle, but could not found anything, again another mechanic was assigned and consumer is still awaiting the result.*yd
Dt*:the contact stated the vehicle was involved in a front-end collision while driving at 70mph and the air bags did not deploy.the contact suffered minor bruising in the collision, and a police report was filed.the vehicle was taken to a private repair shop, where the mechanic was unable to determine the problem.
My vehicle was stopped at a red light waiting for a green turn signal. Other vehicle failed to straighten after making a turn and hit my vehicle head-on. His speed approx .35, my speed 0. His airbags fired off. Mine did not. Dealer cannot get airbag system to reset properly while under repair. They seem unconcerned. I want to know if my airbags will work.
While driving50 mph the vehicle was involved in a frontal collision.none of the frontal air bags deployed upon impact. As a result the consumer sustained injuries when her head hit the windshield and her chest hit the steering wheel.
Consumer states that in a front end collison the air bag did not deploy on impact causing injuries to driver and passenger.*mr
While driving at 45 mph in the rain a deer ran in front ofconsumer's vehicle.consumer swerved to avoid the deer and went into a ditch.front of the vehicle struck a metal pole in a driveway and flipped over several times.seat belts were worn at the time of the collision, but air bags did not deploy.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsusbishi montero. The vehicle was parked and shut off for approximately eight hours when the contact heard the horn sound. The contact had to disconnect the fuse for the horn to stop it. The failure occurred intermittently in cold weather. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop but the failure could not be diagnosed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000 and the current mileage was approximately 130,000.
The horn on my 2001 mitsubishi montero limited will not stop blaring ~ had to take it in for costly repairs all the while ... Blaring down the street to my mechanic.
Woke up to a loud alarm. Neighbors pounding on our door to alert us something was alarming. Cops in the driveway. The noise was 2001 mitsubishi montero horn alarm. It wouldn't shut off till the battery was disconnected. An easy fix would be to remove the fuse, but in mass you are required get yearly detailed inspection of your car. Therefore, my truck would definitely fail and i would end up paying the 1,000-1500 for repairs. This is just another surprise problem added to my list. Very disappointed in your mitsubishi!
Alarm or horn system keep going off randomly.

The horn randomly starts blaring in the middle of the night if you do not remove the fuse. If you remove the fuse it leaves you with no horn! completely unsafe when driving not to have a horn. Clearly this defect was never corrected by the manufacturer. After looking for a cause in many forums, it is clear no one is certain of the actual cause.
Montero under 50,000 miles. Have to replace compressor, alignment bars for sun roof, and brakes.cost $2700with labor.have owned the vehicle for 4 months. No warranty left. Montero has to be jumped to turn on, bucks with defrost on, no air, no radio, and brakes are bad.dealer will not help with cost.
As the car was sitting in the driveway in the middle of the night, the horn started going off w/out any operator in the car. The car remained locked and no one was around. Had to remove the fuse to the horn, however, upon putting the fuse back in the horn continues to go off randomly in the middle of the night in a continuous honk as if someone is laying on the horn.

While vehicle parked in driveway, horn started blaring, lights started flashing. This has happened several times in the past week.had to remove fuses, so horn and alarm would stop going off. This has happened several times in the middle of the night and the very early am hours.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. The contact stated that the horn sounded independently. The contact stated that the battery had to be disabled to stop the horn from sounding. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
Within the last 30 days whenever the outside temperature drops below 18f degrees the horn will continuously blow. Initially the battery is disconnected to stop the horn from making its noise. Then horn relay is removed to disable the horn completely. The problem has not been fixed. The problem has occurred 5 times. A mechanic has been unable to determine the problem.
March 25th 2008:car was parked at golf course and horn began to sound continuously.had to disconnect battery and the pull fuses to stop horn.dealer told me that it was a stuck switch in the horn assembly and that the entire steering pad/airbag assembly had to be replaced at an approximate cost of $1175 parts and labor.on searching the internet i find this be a fairly common problem with monteros prior to 2003.i can't find a recall on this but believe that there should have been one.

February 02, 2008; as i was driving my vehicle, the horn began to sound consistently without stopping. I had to pull over and open the fuse box in the engine compartment area 7 remove fuse.mitsubishi dealer on 02/06/2008 told me that the entire steering wheel with air bag has to be replace. Most likely it has a short and the inside area has no replacement parts to fix the horn from non-stop sounding.cost to replace steering wheel unit with air bag is $1,575.00 !there should be a recall or something for just a short in the horn system.
The horn button sometimes sticks when used and goes off frequently in the cold of the evening many times in the 4-6am hours.the horn is very loud and wakes the neighbors.this has become such an inconvenience that initially removed the fuse for the horn - this is very unsafe!right after disabling the horn someone almost backed up into me!so ihave re-enabled the horn system (put the fuse back).this horn button is also the airbag unit - so it is very expensive to replace.so i have wired a switch in the horn circuit, so that i and my neighbors can sleep at night - i just have to remember to flip the switch back on when i get in the truck.
Horn blew on its own. Consumer had to disconnectthe fuse. Consumer also feared that because of the horn blowing on by itself, air bag might go off by itself as the vehicle warms up.*la
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. While driving 65 mph, the horn sounded loudly without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the horn failed and the horn module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. At 35000, the trunk door latch mechanism is broken. At 57000 miles check engine light lit, caused by spark plugs or spark plug wires open. Replace all plugs and wires at dealership, cost $300.not covered by warranty. At 77000 miles, check engine light lit, dealership replaced catalytic converter under warranty but i pay for the oxygen sensor plus labor that goes with the catalyst.old parts not available. Car driven about 3 miles home from dealeship after replacing the cat. Converter, the check engine light lit again. Dealership checked and said another oxygen sensor is bad. Total 4 oxygen sensors in the system. Cost $230 to replace one sensor. I could not believe that these sensors will go bad at the same time. Is that acoinsidence or manufacturer parts defects???

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. While driving 35 mph, the battery and brake indicators illuminated. In addition, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to turn. The failure occurred two times on different occasions. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the crank shaft guide pin fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic to be repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 225,000.

Same happened to my car.
Consumer stated that she had 70,000 miles onvehicle and the engine blew out.when drivingthe air would blow, then whenstopping the air would stop. Consumer took the vehicle to dealer, and was told that it looked as if the plastic tee in the heater line was busted.then, she was told that it may the thermostat that was sticking.the next day while driving the vehicle just stopped.hadvehicle towed to the dealer, and mechanicdetermined that motor blew out. She had no warning, because the indicator never showed that the vehicle was running hot.
When drivingfor over an hour vehicle stalled without warning. Driverpulled off the road.had the vehicle towed to the dealer on five separate occasions, but problem still recurred.
Since i purchase this vehicle (2001 mitsubishi montero limited), i always had problem with the "check engine" light problem. The third day i got the vehicle from the alhambra mitsubishi dealership, the light turn on. And always got the same reply " make sure the gas cap is closed properly". And now the vehicle has the light on again, and dealer will not do or care about the problem. This problem always happen when the car is going uphill or when it need power.also the brake light keep failing.

2001 mitsubishi montero;engine shot on the highway (nj turnpike).there was no oil warning.this is a life threatening issue-if i had been on the inner lane, i would have been dead.vehicles on nj turnpike are traveling 60-80mph.vehicle has been serviced on timely oil changes at jiffy lube.this should not have happened.it has 90k mlies on it, bought used, i owe $15k on it, it will cost $8k to fix.2 yrs og payments to go.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero.the contact took the vehicle to a local dealer for routine maintenance.months later, he took the vehicle to a different repair shop for an oil change and was advised that the former dealer did not reinstall the heat cover.without the heat cover, there is no safeguard to the various hoses and components in the engine, which has several potential safety implications.he called the dealer again and was advised by the manager, tom wanster, that his heat cover was not left there; however, they did locate other heat covers for similar models.the manager would not provide him with any assistance.the contact filed a complaint with the federal trade commission.the failure mileage was 95,000 and current mileage was 102,268.
Engine replacement at 79k miles.february 04 i noticed a knocking sound coming from under the hood of the car.the mitsubishi mechanic said it was coming from the engine but that he would just change the oil to see if that helped. The sales ticket said, no problem found.august 04 the knocking came back.on a trip the oil light came on but there was oil in the vehicle.we had the vehicle towed to mitsubishi.the mechanic then confirmed that it was the engine.the pickup tube was clocked but the engine walls were clean.the result was to replace the engine.mitsubishi would not cover the charges because it was pass the warranty mileage. No one can determine how the pickup tube was clogged with so much crud. However, mitsubishi says that it does not matter if it was a defect in the pickup tube it was past the warranty.

Pcm reprogramming for mil on/dtc po125. Incorrect pcm software parameters cause the mil("service engine soon) light to come on and diagnostic trouble code po125 to test to set. I purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero ltd from gibbons toyota in eynon, pa. I also purchased a warranty from them.my engine light comes on. They say sensors have to be changed.light came back on. Changed another sensor, light came on. Now they say it is the catalytic converter. They tell me it is covered by mitsubishi for 8 yrs. They try ertley motor world numerous times and cannot get them to respond. They are in wilkes-barre, pa. Gibbons mgr then contacted domiano's in archbald. They to did not want to have anything to do with this. Why is it that mitsubishi dealers will not stand behind their warranty's. This is the 4thmitsubishi i have owned, and now that i see the service, it will be the last. They are very ignorant people. They treat you like dirt. Very arrogant. Something should be done about this. There is an 8 yr warranty on the converter, and it should be changed with no hassle. Thank you. This has been going on for the last 6 months.

Stability failure and lights defect
Last year in november of 2005, i had to replace the passenger side wheel hub bearing because the bearings inside the hub broke down. Prior to getting it replaced, loud metallic grinding noise was coming from the wheel area. I took the hub bearing apart and found that the bearings were damamged and no sign of grease inside of the hub bearing.now, on may 5, 2005, i have the same kind of problem and i inspected the hub bearing by taking it apart and discovered the bearings were damage.this led to my conclusion that it must have been a product defect and not a coincidence.i drive my vehicle from home to work normally and never have abuse the use of the vehicle like taking it offroad for a joy ride. It is a 2001 full size limited mitsubishi montero.please, someone help me out because it caused me a great deal in time and money to replace the parts.

Gas leak from the front mount area of the sending unit on top of the gas tank.significant leak, odor of gas overwhelming.quoted $1200 to repair. All salvaged tanks/kits in similar condition.fire hazard, and it was recommended by auto masters to have it fixed for safety reasons.it leaks when it is running due to the built up pressure.now hard to start because there is not enough pressure (being lost from the leak).another safety issue.

During normal driving conditions the vehicle transmission goes into a nuetral position and will not return into gear.once this occurs none of the drive gears will work.the dealership has had this vehicle for almost three weeks and cannot determine the problem although they have got the vehicle to duplicate the problem.i believe this vehicle is a lemon and plan to take the appropriate steps to deal with this problem.

Dt:contact stated everything underneath the vehicle was rusted, and going toward the engine.the vehicle had to be towed to the service station.the inside of the left wheel well cracked, causing the wheel bearing to break, and the driveshaft to slip down, causing the gears to grind in the drivshaft, sensors for the wheel well, and the components of the axle assembly were rusted.when the mechanic was taking the bolts from the inside of the driveshaft to replace it, the bolts disintegrated. Mechanic statedthat the manufacturer did not spray the rust corrosion protection on the vehicle. I have 2 complaints.first:i have had the car checked several times by the dealer to locate a very loud noise coming from the front of the car.it has to be in something that has to do with the steering or i guess suspension.i have had the right front hub assembly replaced, new tires and a brake job that i wasn't supposed to have done on the truck and i still have the noise that has been confirmed by the dealership technician.when driving straight, the car hasloud hum.when i steer to the right and the weight of the truck shifts to the left, the noise goes away.when i steer to the left and the weight of the truck shifts to the right, the noise gets louder.i haven't noticed anything yet with the steering that might seem dangerous, but i feel very uneasy about the car.i feel like one day i am going to be driving and something will just snap.the main thing is i don't have the money to keep taking the truck to dealerships to investigate what is going on and finding nothing.second, i was wondering if there is a standard for the placement of the brake and gas pedals with respect to the placement of the seat.when i purchased the truck i realized that the seating was kind of wierd but i didn't think anything of it.now, after having been seen by several dealers. Because of extreme pain in my back, but primarily my hips to the point of considering surgery. They ask if i have been in an accident or fallen or had any trauma and i haven't.then i realized the pain did not begin until i got this truck and i primarily feel poorly when i am driving and right after i drive. So i really started paying attention to the position my body is in when i am driving and my legs are in a very awkward position in order to reach the pedals.thus my question: do these types of standards for pedal placement exist and where might i take my truck to have it measured or tested for compliance.
Consumer called complaining about having a problem with the transmission. Also stated that while reversing the vehicle it took off even do the consumer had her foot on the brake pedal. Dealer was contacted and stated that it will be up to the insurance company to fix it. Ts
For several months i have brought it to their attention, but nothing has been done. No safety defect listed.
Incident: repacement of 4 differetnials in 30.000 miles/have all documentation, returned vehicle 3 days after purchase for repair. Repaired every 8000 miles and seeking repair as of todays date may 11 2004 failure: 4 differentials failed, still failing as of may 10, 2004have consumer protection/fraud case worker & 2 letters from department of jjustice asking for dealership to comply.consequences: differential 4 is making noise & appears to be going out againwhat was done: replaced differential 4 times, mitsubushi cant fix car, says is a defect flaw and is not a problem with safety or product liability. Refuses to replace vehicle and or compensate for defective differential. Mediation suggested mitsubushi replace car have other complaints with same problem year 2001 montero. Dealership unwilling to cooperate. Ishmael martinez told me the noise was normal and there would be no safety issues. I work for a metro police department and the auto mechanic told me yes there are safety issues if the differential failed completely and it could cause me to be thrown off the road.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph the brake warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. Also, the contact mentioned that after parking, the vehicle failed to stop and continue rolling. The contact stated that she had to engage the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed that the accumulator was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The failure and the current mileage was 32,900.
The brake booster accumulator is leaking so it makes a 'chirping' sound from the left side of the vehicle. This is a recognized fault with this vehicle and a recall was issuedi did not get notification of the recall so did not get it fixed. It has now become a problem which i am told could cause the brakes to fail, obviously a serious safety issue. I have spoken to mitsubishi and they will not honor the recall.
I'm driving downhill when my brakes start acting up.it was so hard and no power brakes , i needed to use the hand brakes to make sure i wasn't going hit the car in front of me. Took to the dealer cost a couplehundred bucks for diagnostic and they saidmy power brake booster needed to be replaced. Icant afford to have it fix right away it cost few thousand bucks for the new one and i don't want put a used one because i'm not sure if its going to last. How come mitsubishi motors can't help us for this they know these parts are not going to last.that's why they changed it and put a different one on their 2003 and up models.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. The contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The emergency brake was applied in order for the vehicle to stop. The contact also stated that the abs warning light illuminated. Recall on abs accumulator was performed years ago.brakes once again failed almost completely with wife and 3 children.luckily she remembered the parking brake and was able to stop.new accumulator replaced and brakes were again fine for 3 days...complete failure again.dealer informs us that the entire abs assembly needs replaced at a total cost and labor of around (between) $2800. And $3600.00.the recalled part (the accumulator) i am finding is a direct result of the entire abs assembly damage.if the pump tries and continues to try and fill the leaking accumulator the pump fails.as a result the pump and abs control (brain) module are all in one and the entire assembly needs to be replaced.what recourse do we have?how can we get mitsubishi to replace this defective "complete assembly"the vehicle is now useless as we save our pennies and scrape together what we can to fix a problem that we nor anyone else should have to fix.i see many reports of accidents due to this very problem.please help!
Abs accumulator failure and noise
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. While driving at 30 mph, an abnormal sound emitted from the hood of the vehicle. The brakes became harder to depress and the anti-brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who stated that the air needed to be released from the brakes. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 158,000.
The hydraulic brake booster, manufactured by aisin, failed due to a worn out pump motor. This is a brushed motor with no service intervalso much as mentioned in either the owners manual or the factory service manual. Moreover, you can not purchase brushes for the motor from the dealer or anyone else. Here is a photo of the motor: http://i.imgur.com/dui0x0k.jpgas you can see it's completely worn out. This was taken after it was cleaned with compressed air. The motor was filled with the remains of the brushes and commutator. It is extremely irresponsible to power a breaking system with such a low quality motor and not even give it a service interval. When this motor fails, so do the brakes. Every single generation three montero will suffer from this failure, some catastrophically. As more vehicles rely on electric power to stop, this is surely going to be an issue that nhtsa will be dealing with.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. While driving 30 mph, the contact's wife heard an abnormal chirping sound and the brakes failed. The sound originated from the under the dashboard. When the contact attempted to brake, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. In addition, the abs warning indicator illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 228,983.
When i step on the break pedal i hear a buzzing sound coming from the front compartment of the vehicle. The break is not functional since it is hard and stays up while i depress with my foot. While driving or when the engine is running i hear this sound periodical and a steady sound with the anti lock/ break light on
Was going down a hill when i couldn't press my brake pedal because it was too stiff! the abs and brake light turn and with a constant beeping noise. Thankfully there was a hill going back up so i was able to slow it and pull it off the road fine. Glad it didn't happen at other points of my trip! my brake booster has gone bad and mitsubishi says it's not part of the recall. Seems like they have a lot of problems with this and it's never part of the recall.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. The contact stated that he was traveling 10 mph when he applied the brakes to avoid a preceding vehicle than abruptly applied their brakes. There were no injuries associated with the crash. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or an independent mechanic. The contact stated that he was involved in two additional crashes as a result of failed brakes. The vehicle was not inspected and the contact stated that the abs accumulator was the cause of the failure, based on his research. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 149,000. The current mileage was approximately 152,000.

On july 8, 2014 i noticed that when i applied the brake pedal, i would hear a noise from the left side of my truck.i wasn't sure what it was and i asked a few friends to look at it.one indicated that it had to do with the brake assist and found under the hood where the noise was coming from.after that i did some research on the item and found through safecar.gov that this vehicle was apart of a recall from 2001 for the accumulator that is installed on the hydraulic brake booster.i am not the original owner of the vehicle and proceeded it to go the local dealer to have them fix this.i was told that the car had been fixed under the recall back in nov 2001 and due to this they refuse to fix the item.i filed a complaint direct with mitsubishi ([xxx]).this is obviously a known safety hazard and the mitsubishi refused to fix a problem they know exists.how do i know if the part they replaced isn't also faulty.the recall report indicated that over a period of time, it could result is leakage of the pressurized nitrogen gas from inside the accumulator and could result in a crash.when i asked the cost to repair the item i was advised it would be $2,000.this is simply insane.they know they have a problem so now mitsubishi raises the prices on the item so they can recoup the costs of the recall.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Our 2001 mitsubishi montero ltd. Experienced a near complete brake failure after the vehicle had been parked overnight. My wife was taking our children to school when the vehicle would not stop at an intersection. To avoid running into traffic, she was forced to throw the vehicle into park because there was less than 10% braking power, even after pumping the brakes several times. There was a strange noise coming from the engine compartment near master cylinder assembly. Local dealer in murrieta, ca told us that the vehicle already had been serviced for hbb accumulator recall, and that the vehicle did not qualify for repairs. Also mileage was over 150k at 184k. We had the accumulator replaced by another certified mitsubishi mechanic which solved the braking problem. 6 months later, we experienced a second brake system failure, also losing about 90% of braking power. This time the brake and abs lights on the dash came on and a buzzer sounded continually. The problem was initially intermittent, but now the lights and buzzer stay on continually. Took vehicle to the same mechanic who fixed the hbb accumulator and after diagnosing the vehicle he stated that the hydraulic control unit was malfunctioning. The vehicle is currently awaiting repairs. I am writing the complaint due to the fact that the loss of brake power is nearly total and without warning. We avoided serious accidents only by divine providence. It seems that any brake system on a modern vehicle out to allow for some subsystem failures and remain able to stop the vehicle. I have heard ofabs or booster failures on other vehicles, yet they maintain the ability to stop the vehicle, that seems to not be the case with the mitsubishi montero. It also would seem that the manufacturer has had ample opportunity to remedy this situation since 2001 and yet seems unconcerned that their design is so significantly flawed.
While backing out of the driveway brakes failed. This caused extended stopping distance, andconsumer had to switch to neutral to decelerate the vehicle. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic who advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer replaced the hydraulic brake booster accumulator but the noise persisted. The manufacturer was contacted but offered no assistance. The current mileage was 173,660 and the failure mileage was approximately 167,000.

The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The contact referenced the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 01v254002 (service brakes, hydraulic) however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact nhtsa to file a complaint. The approximate failure mileage was 172,000.
I was driving my vehicle, suddenly my brakes fail.i almost struck a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. My brake pedal was very hard. I had my mechanic check the vehicle. My brakes pads were fine. I later learn from the mitsubishi dealer that i need a abs hydraulic unit. The repair is very expensive. My car is in good condition only 58,000 miles. Mitsubishi refused to cover the parts. At this moment the car is park. Can't seems to understanding how an abs unit fail suddenly leaving the car with no brakes. Believed it's a manufacture defect.

Dt: the contact stated there was hydraulic brake booster accumulator failure with the vehicle. While traveling 2 mph exiting the drive way, the brakes were depressed however there was no response coupled with a squeaking noise. The brakes continue to make noises when depressed. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who determined there was a recall for vehicles of the same year make and model. The recall number is #sr-01-008 when the dealership was alerted, they determine the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.

While heading home from work, i got the surprise of my life. I was driving and my brakes went out. Luckily, i was heading home after the rush hour otherwise i would have been in a major accident. I got off the gas and steered the car to an embankment to slow the momentum. The only logical thing to do at this point was to engage my emergency brake. I called the mechanic immediately who advised me not to drive the car and that they will tow it to the shop. Upon inspection, he informed that the brake booster system (hydraulic brake booster system) as been compromised and it seemed like just faulty manufacturing.thinking this was an easy fix, i searched for the part. A new surprise appeared, the part was over $1400.00. Then i found this site. I will attempt to contact the manufacturer and see if they can resolve this issue. If not, mitsubishi will never have me as a customer ever again.

Replaced brakes (front and rear) at 18000 miles.will have to do it again at 27000 miles.brakes are woefully undersized for weight of the vehicle.rotors overheat and warp which makes stopping a bone shaking experience.resurfacing rotors only provides temporary relief.brake system should be redesigned an properly sized - current systems should be replaced immediately before someone dies.
Brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced at 27000 miles.then again, the rotors warped to the point where they needed to be resurfaced on both the rear and front at 43000 miles.dealer claimed that this is due to driver abuse.

Defective hydraulic brake booster accumulator (nhtsa id#01v254001) on my 2001 montero caused my brakes to fail while stopping at an intersection which resulted with me rear ending another vehicle!this happened over 1 year ago and the defective part has been making a terrible sound while braking for over 2 years.everytime i performed maintenance on my vehicle.no one could confirm what was causing this noise.i just found out today (06/08/2004) what the part is and that it's known to fail, causing crashes what happened on 03/10/2003.i was cited for "failure to yield, but contested that my brakes failed at the point of avoiding the car in front of me.i had the vehicle checked several times and no one knew what was wrong with the vehicle?the brakes would continue to fail if i came to a fast stop and i have been driving the vehicle very carefully since this accident.luckily i came accross the nhtsa website and discovered that i had a defective part!!!accident caused my vehicle $1,700.00 in damages and the other vehicle damage. Also (not sure $ / covered by insurance)how do i go about filing a claim for my vehicles damage of $1,700.00 and getting this part exchanged??? the mitsubishi dealer i purchased my 2001 montero from went out of business years ago.

Regarding nhtsa recall campaign number: 01v254001i know there are extremely similar complaints to mine regarding this bulletin (used google to find them)i noticed strange noises when depressing brakes in my 2001 mitsubishi montero.had it looked at by 2 separate independent mechanics who determined an issue with the hydraulic unit. Item is dealer only.so i researched the issue on the web only to find the exact symptom description was covered in an nhtsa recall bulletin.i promptly contacted my lancaster, pa mitisubishi dealer and was told that my vin number was not included in the recall.my car is unsafe to drive due to a defective brake unit and they want me to pay to have it looked at?this is ridiculous.i have already had three other recall related issues fixed. I also called the mitsubishi national customer hotline and was told the same thing. I am very disappointed in mitsubishi.i feel i have no recourse..please help!

My 2001 mitsubishi montero is making load sounds when i apply the brakes. According to your site there was a recall on a part of my brakes. In 2001 when the car was still very new this recall was conducted and my vehicle was "fixed" according to dealer records. Now i am having the same problem again and the dealer and mitsubishi motors say it is my problem now. If their recall does not work then they are liable, not me. This is a safety issue, other people have had their brake fail completely and not be able to stop because of this issue. Mitsubishi should have to fix this problem free of charge until they get it right, not just the first time! i will never buy mitsubishi again and your agency should not allow this policy to further put peoples lives at risk.
Refusal to comply with recall id# 01v254001. We took our 2001 montero to the mitsubishi dealer as the brake part had gone bad just as stated in the recall. The dealer said the vehicle had been inspected when new and it was deemed ok. It was never replaced and now that it has become defective they will not replace it.
The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero. While driving 35 mph, the battery and brake indicators illuminated. In addition, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to turn. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 225,000.
Stability failure and lights defect
Power string pump failed. Rear brakes locked.
Engine stalls constantly when coming to stops.also, steering wheel locks up when turning in any direction. As a result, consumerwas almost in an accident.
The steering box shaft completely snapped apart, steeringwas lost and had to drift into a guardrail to stop vehicle. I contacted the dealership and was told part was 2100 dollars for steering. If the vehicle was not going less than 15 mph the results would have been a diaster.
Having viewed rollover risk on consumer reports tests on montero, i feel this should be investigated.
It appears a pressure leak of the rubberized hose caused fluid tospray onto the hot manifold causing a fire of the vehicle above.this loss was investigated by superior investigations of florida inc. And can be reached at 727-848-3923.dt
This vehicle while backing from a parking spot separated the inner tie rod from the outter there are no sings of damage or abuse that i could find. The factory replacement parts have an enormous amount of play. We have tried two inner and two outter and the same result. The local dealership states this normal. I am not the owner of this vehicle. It was brought to me to be repaired. I am an ase certified master tech. I feel like there is a defect in the design of this vehicle.
Consumer attempted an avoidance maneuver when her suv lifted onto the left tires and subsequently fell onto the driver's side sliding across the highway through both the right lane and shoulder.vehicle then rolled onto its roof where the roof collapsed to the steering wheel on the driver's side.consumer sustained fracture and minor spine injuries.
The car/suv still runs like new, it passes inspection ,every time ! it never failed inspection. The bodyrot and rusted framelead to my spare tire fall off the car while i was driving home in the middle of the night. I bought it new in 2001 and taught my kids to drive with it. When i took the vechile to firestone thre manager didn't even want it on the lift stating he didn't want his men to get hurt if the frame decided to brake.he would not work on the car anymore and told me to get rid of it,i didn't understand but after eyeing for myself and experiencing the tire drop out of its well. I wanted a second opinion i got that and it was the same response. I didn't have the money for a new vechile at the time .it was my second vechile i used on weekends doing craft events but sometimes i would travel far to nj, ny, nh , va.. It's was too the point when the vendors saw me coming to events they worried about my travel with. The vechile. It has sentimental value to my i lost my daughter in a car accident and keeping the suv i feel like my memories of her are still with me positively and fresh, lasting, loving. After she past i said i would never get rid of the suv. Today the plates are off its still in the driveway and still running. I feel the frame should have lasted a lot longer, it has some body rust around the wheel wells . It's paid for and running i never missed a beat with the oil changes etc. I want to keep the car, but can't not and i am devastated to rid my self of our family air loom. I cohan one side welded last year but to do the other side for 1k it might not be a good idea because it's breaking down faster now. The first few years when ii had the suv i had a garage but later years didn't. Living in ct some winters can be brutal.the local body shop offers 150.00 which i feel insulting.i really want a rust free frame

After viewing news about rollover my 9 yrdaughter has had nightmares and i had to get someone to drive us in another car to go on a family visit to upstate ny,spoke to dealership manager about returning car,his response; i have to pay dealer $10,000 so my credit wont get ruined.there should be a mandatory recall before an accident should happen to someone. Mmca sent me a video which i had my daughter view, but it hasn't changed her prior reaction
Is your orginization going to test and force a recall on the potential for the 2001 mitsubishi montero to tip over.the dealer told me your orginization had no comment because you didn't agree with the consumer reports findings.the report was aired june 20th indicating the 2001 full size mitsubishitip over at low speeds.the dealer would not cooperate even though i had the car for only 2 days.why was no testing done on this vehicle but instead on the sport montero?
Stability failure and lights defect
Approaching highway speeds , a vibration occurs at t front end of the vehicle, most noticeable on the passenger side where a loud continous rattle developes.moreover a looseness is noticeablein truck.( dot number: )
Within a few weeks of purchasing our vehicle, we brought it back to the dealer due to violent shaking from the front end.we were told we needed 4 brand new tires.buying new tires did not fix the problem.within a few days we began to hear a humming, vibrating, and growling noise coming from the front of the vehicle when you hit approximately 40 mph.we brought the vehicle back to the dealer and brought the sales manager for a test drive to hear the noise.when my wife explained that she was scared to drive the vehicle, they assured her that it was not a safety hazard and the vehicle would be fine to drive.the service manager called and said they had to replace the free wheel valve solenoid. We picked up the truck and on our way home the noise returned.we called the service manager and explained that the noise was still there and we were to bring the vehicle in again and take the technician for a test drive in it so he can hear the noise.while on test drive the tech advised her that they had other montero's that made the same noise and when they changed the sensor it went away.then they said the "torque" converter was bad - they changed it but it didn't fix the problem, then they drained the transmission fluid, didn't fix the problem.then we were told they might have to replace the entire drive shaft.they never changed the drive shaft but instead replaced the left hub bearing assembly. My wife picked up the vehicle 2 days later and the noise was gone but the engine was "jumping" every time she stopped at a red light.this has happened several times, but we keep getting told that the computer isn't showing any problems.why has nothing been done about all the roll over cases we keep hearing about?*la

Right side of car suddenly dropped when making a left turn from a stop light.driver lost control of car running into right side curb no injuries.after collision the wheel was at an angle and joint at the right upper control arm was loose at the hub.also, the right rear wheel rim was broken and the rear tire had become flat. There was no damage to tire to indicate any kind of blow out.parts that required replacement included right rear hub, right rear axle assembly, right rear shock, right rear wheel and tire, right rear upper control arm and right lower trailing arm. Observation of the damaged hub indicated that the slot that holds the bolt from the upper control arm was distorted into an oval shape.dt
