In february, 2000, i had pulled up underneath my home.the car was in park when the motor excelled.i thought something must be wrong with the timing.i turned off the car. I didn't think any more about it until 9-20-2000 when the engine did it again.i was picking my child up from football practice i pulled into a parking place.the spaces are close together and you go into the parking area with your foot on the brake.i had pulled straight up in the space and was getting ready to put it in park when the motor excelled again.i braked as hard as i could but the car would not stop. I did not have my foot on the gas as mitsubishi has suggested i might have done.i ran over a metal fence.i was headed toward a bleacher when i did a 90 degree turn and headed down a path. The only thing that was working was the steering.i heard a click and the motor died down and i was able to stop the car.i have a number of witnesses who saw me pull in.i have a very good driving record and i am 49 years old.by the police suggestions i had the vechilde towed to a towing place until i could contact my insurance company.i contacted liberty mutual.i asked them to have the car inspected before they towed it to mitsubishi dealership in charleston.they were on anoff about this for several days then they said it had to go to the dealership, that they did not have a place that could check it out.it was towed to the dealership and they went over it.i was told by the manager it could be many things but when they checked it out, everything was okay.the manger said it could be air flow from the computer that is shot into diffferent sysytems, but there was no evidence.liberty mutual then sent someone out.why they didn't do this before, i don't know.their engineer looked over everything with mitsubishi and guess what nothing is wrong with it.wrong! 7 months between the incidences.when will be the next time??? mitsubishi says i have to take a leased car bac

Took my truck back to the dealer on 2/22/01 for engine light that came on.they replaced a leaky fuel cap and engine light went off.told them when i call for service about the 2nd -3rd shift that was slipping in the transmission.the could not find what i was speaking of the first time.the second time i took it back for the same reason they then said that mitsubishi had a letter stating that there was a problem with the 2nd - 3rd shift.the called the tech line and no one new what to do with the vehicle.they in turn wanted me to pay for a tranny flush, i refused telling them i had been instructed by a mechanic friend that this is not the problem, so i did not have that done.to boot they wanted me to pay for this (80.00).!! when i called again about my vechicle doing the same thing i told them i did not feel the vehicle was safe to drive because driving a damaged transmission was not good, the told me that i was in no danger.the third time, they instructed me mitsubishi could do nothing else to help me and i had to pick up the vehicle immediately.so now i am driving a possible damaged transmission and who knows what else will happen.i would like to request and investigation into this, the mechanic at the dealership told me other vehicles(montero's) have been doing the same thing as well not just mine.i believe this is mitsubishi's responsiblity to fix this even if it means a new transmission!! if you would like to talk further on this problem please feel free to contact me at the given numbers.thanks and have a great day. ---concerned consumer

After ~ 2hours of highway driving the "n" (neutral) light flashes which indicates that the transmission has overheated.the car most be stopped asap to cool the transmission so as to not damage it.i am concerned that since this problem has occurred everytime i go on a trip lasting more than 2 hours of hwy driving am i damaging the car or causing a potential safety (fire/personnel injury) hazard!?i have taken the car to the dealer to search for a cause and solution but they found nothing.is the transmission fluid compromised and therby causing this?in addition, this is an inconvenience when one is travelling.being that i travel a lot i always have to be on the lookout for this problem.aside from being a safety issue and potentially a costly repair issue it's a nuisance!flashing light ?

On 7/13/00, while travelling on city street @ 25-30 mph & maintaining adequate distance ( at least 2 car lengths )from vehicle in front, driver of said vehicle stopped in lane ( at a green light )to avoid hitting cars in front of him that had stopped, i pressed down on my brakes & it failed to stop my vehicle. I pressed the pedal all the way to the floor (while bruising 3 toes on my right foot);was unable to stop, vehicle continued to roll into the back of the other vehilce. Brakes definitely failed. Was recorded by police officer in his report and i was cited for the accident. I have reported the details of the accident to the dealer and to the national 800 # customer service re: failing brakes & possible concealed defect by mitsubishi caused my accident. According to various articles in print and on tv, mitsubishi has concealed defects for the past 20 years & its own government (japan) is investigating. When i discussed the defect articles & recall #'s to the mitsu rep. She claimed that those figures were incorrect & did not apply to vehicles exported to the us, even though the ap wire reports stated that more than 45,000 defected vehicles were sold in the us?!?!?! i have been driving for 36 years, accident-free, never even coming close to an accident, and then my brand-new mitsu has brake failure under emergency conditions & i have this accident that was not my fault. I do not drive recklessly, nor too close, always defensively & apparently trusting too much in the quality & integrity of my vehicle and the safety features that i paid for & presumed would be effective in times of crisis. Not the case! if the executives/management of mitsubishi have concealed defects in their vehicles for the past 20 years, what's to say that the 2000 montero sports aren't hiding something! i need some answers! i am contesting the citation with a hearing before the traffic court next month for it was not my fault! please contact me confirming your receipt & resolution. Thank you!!!

The vehicle started creaking after the second month , we were originally told that it was new and that it was the interior plastic that was adjusting do to temp. Changes.this continued and than the second issue the abs brakes almost caused 2 accidents when going less than 5 mph and the vehicle slid.the brake pedal shook excessively and the noise and shaking from underneath made it seem like it was going to fallapart. By the sixth month their was other noises coming from the suspension in the front and rear . The creaking /clicking noise was apparant in both the front and rear. August marks having this vehicle for1 1/2 years and both my wife and ican not takeits issues anymore. This was a major purchase for us and wefeel theeventsjustifyit as a "lemon".

The entire vehicle vibrates around 60mph.the wheels have been balanced twice now, and an alignment perormed.i am working with the dealer to determine the problem.i visit a montero sport owner's bulletin board often (www.montero-sport.com), and many others on the board complain of the same problem.these other people have montero sports that range in year from 1997 to 2000.mitsubishi is aware of the problem, but the dealer repair techs don't know what to do to fix the problem.most others with the problem have had the same work performed that i have, with no improvement.one person just completed a buy back with mitsubishi.a lawyer that visits the board gathered a list of names and sent an official complaint letter to mmca (mitsubishi).i'm complaining to the nhsta in the hope that a governmental entity can get something done.this vibration problem could potentially cause someone to lose control of their vehicle.

Dealership has not been able to correct or figure out what was causing the problem. Please provide any further information.

My vehicle has not had a catatrophic failure as of yet. However the front suspension components and wheel bearings have degraded rapidly to the point of being unsafe at highway speeds and has totally ruined the front tires at 20000 mi.(the alignment has been checked and is perfect) the local mitsubishi dealer "courtesy mitsubishi" has twice refused to honor my factory warrantee and has made ridiculous excuses such as "the tire tread is separating on the front tires, therefor we cannot diagnose any problems with the front end". Afterwhich, i went to an authorized yokohama tire dealer and was assured that nothing was wrong with my front tires save for the excessive wear caused by suspension component problems! i feel as if i have no where else to turn as i cannot personally afford to hire a lawyer and sue for breech of contract. This is a dangerous situation and requires immediate action to remedy. With mitsubishi's past record of stonewalling against accepting responsibility for defective products, i am officially requesting assistance and a remedy from the nhtsa.

The front wheel bearings have been adjusted twice by mitsubishi dealership mechanics. First time by "courtesy mitsubishi" on stevens creek blvd., san jose ca. The second attempt to have this repaired was again at courtesy mitsu with no cooperation from the service dept. They claimed that the eratic steering and the low grumbling sound was eminating from the front tires. And they further claimed that they could not diagnose the problem due to "tread separation" on the front tires. This was confirmed at a later date to be false as i took the vehicle to a yokohama dealership and had the owner inspect the tires. He found no defects. I had the tires rotated and balanced to eliminate any doubt as to the tires condition. The vehicle continued to progressively get worse. Loud clunking noises, wheel bearing growl, and extremely erratic steering behavior at all speeds. I am not able to take my family out on the freeway in this vehicle as i am afraid for their safety. I took the truck to another, larger dealer, "capitol mitsubishi". They kept the vehicle for 48 hrs and concluded that the front wheel bearings were indeed loose again. However they refused to admit that there was any other problem and only retightened the bearings on the right side. The manager went for a test drive with me and i told him that the problem was not solved. He refused to do the work under warrantee and billed me $90.00 labor for retightening the bearings. This vehicle is dangerous to drive and the front suspension components are rapidly deteriorating. Ball joints, control arm bushings, wheel bearings... Mitsubishi is violating the warrantee by avoiding and delaying a full and complete repair of these problems!

The vehicle was sold with inadequate rear coil suspension resultingin the vehicle "bottoming out" with rear passengers.the vehicle was represented to be able to tow 5000#. But due to the improper suspension, towing anything is dangerous as a result ofthe inability of the suspension to accommodateminimal tongue weight.supposed repair did not fix the problem.a cushion was installed rather than increasing the coil strength or otherwise "repairing" the problem.the cushion merely attempts to "mask" the inadequate suspension and does not resolve anything.
