Dt:the consumer owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport.on 10-11-05 while drivingon the interstate there was a wreck in front of consumers vehicle.when the consumer applied the brakes, they would not stop the vehicle.the brake light had come on earlier that day.the contacts vehiclehit the vehicle in front.upon impact, the air bagsdeployed but not all the way. This week i have had two occurrences where the horn just starts blaring and won't stop.once was in the afternoon, and the other was at 5:00 am.my only diy alternatives are to disconnect the battery (obviously can't use the vehicle), or remove the fuse (very unsafe).the vehicle was stationary, no weather problems, temperature was mild (around 70 degrees).prior to this happening, the horn rarely worked at all; at least not when i wanted it to work.i googled the problem and it appear to be very widespread on this vehicle.from what i have found out, it involves removing the airbag assembly, so getting it fixed is very costly (over $1000).i expect to spend some money on a few items here & there on a 16 year old vehicle, but i don't expect to spend over $ 1000 on a vehicle just to make the horn work right.

While driving at 40 mph, the consumer's vehicle rear ended another vehicle.the other vehicle was part of a six car pile up.the consumer was wearing his seat belt but the air bags did not deploy.the consumer suffered severe head trauma and other injuries.a police did arrive on the seen and a report was made.

Another vehicle made a left hand turn out of a parking lot onto the street in front of me.i had no time to brake.hit the other vehicle at 45 mhp with entire front end of montero sport.entire front end of montero sport smashed in, engine died, had to be towed.passenger taken to hospital, driver had 4.5 months of physical therapy for back, neck, and shoulder injuries.

While driving 55mph consumer rearended a parked vehicle, and airbags did not deploy. Frontal impact dealer contacted.there was one injury. *jg

In a frontal collison none of the air bagsdeployed on impact.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport. The contact stated that while driving, he attempted to sound the horn but it would not function. The vehicle also stalled. The brake warning light, srs air bag warning light, and check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact had to jumpstart the vehicle in order to begin driving. As the contact began driving, the horn began to sound nonstop until the vehicle stalled again. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic, who diagnosed an electrical failure. The contact did not know exact failure. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure and current mileages were 100,000.

Horn spontaneously sounded and would not go off while car was parked in cold.the fuse had to be removed.now that the temperature is warmer the horn appears to be back to normal with the fuse back in.the horn switch is contained in an assembly that includes the airbag and is sold only as a unit with a parts price of over $600, plus labor to install.an investigation on the internet shows that a number of other 2001 mitsubishi montero owners have reported similar defects in the horn.it is unreasonable for mitsubishi to charge $1,000 to fix their defect in the horn switch.this is a major safety defect.

The check engine light came on so i took the car to the dealer right away. I was told that there was an 89$ charge to diagnose the problem. Later that day i was called to be told that it would now cost me 192$ because they had to download information to the computor. This definatly sounds like a manufacturing problem and they are charging there customers to fix it. I will never buy another mitsubishi again. I informed the dealership how i felt but they could care less so be it but i will tell everyone i know how i was treated and let them make there own decision.

The horn on my mitsubishi montero sport is defective. It constantly blows fuses, and when i can finally for some reason get one in the fuse slot without blowing, i will be driving down the road and my horn will just start going off and it wont stop until i pull over and take the fuse back out.

The horn comes on by itself, only way to shut it off is to pull the fuse or let it warm up. Will this effect airbag deployment?

This past winter (2004) when the temperature dipped to the low 20's my horn went off for no apparent reason.the only way to make it stop was to either wait until the vehicle warmed up or to pull the fuse.*la

I purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport from jack taylor alexandria toyota. On september 09, 2002, i experienced trouble with my vehicle on the way back from our south carolina vacation. While driving the vehicle it started hesitating, smoking heavily and the a/t temp light came on and stayed on. Unfortunately, the stations service area was closed, but we were able to purchase transmission we added the transmission fluid as recommended and let the car cool down. Finally, after about an hour the vehicle started up, the a/t temp light went out and the car was no longer smoking. I called the representative back and advised him that the truck seemed to be fine, therefore we were going to try and make it home. He suggested that i schedule an appointment to have the vehicle checked. I contacted the darcars dealership the next day and spoke to a mr. Willard who scheduled an appointment for my car. After the technician checked the vehicle, the only problem they could find was that the car was 2 quarts overfilled with transmission fluid and no other problems. Mileage was 35346.on october 21, 2003, i had an oil change performed on my vehicle at jiffy lube while driving home the truck started to hesitate, making a loud knocking and ticking sound, the oil light came on and the vehicle started loosing acceleration pressure. I called the manager mike at jiffy lube who serviced my vehicle and performed the service, i told him exactly what the truck was doing and he stated that he could not tell me why it was doing this but that the truck should have plenty of oil in it. Mileage was 56292.

When coming to a stop the vehicle stalled without warning.this problem occured intermittently.the vehicle shut down without prior warning. Dealer is aware of the problem. Ts *jg

I purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport used in march 2004, one month after purchase i brought it to the dealership with a complaint of a knocking noise in the engine.the dealership said nothing was wrong.i have properly maintained my vehicle since day one and learned to live with the knocking noise.on oct 23, 2005 the while driving down the highway the knocking noise became excessive so i pulled over, turned the engine off, waited a minute and restarted.as i started to accelerate there was a loud knock and smoke was coming from under the hood.mitsubishi is claiming the vehicle threw a rod due to sludge in the engine. The are saying this was due to neglect of the vehicle due to the owner, although they have never once asked me for records of maintenance, which i have.they then say it was from neglect of the previous owner.in a report i received from the dealership my vehicle has been sitting they say "engine failure due to oil starvation".i have records of 5 oil changes in 18 months.right now my vehicle is still inoperable and have a date set with the national center of dispute resolution.hopefully mitsubishi will suck it up and do what they are suppose to do under warranty.

I have a mistusbishi montero sport xls 2001 3.0. Now i have only had the car for 2yrs i kept up with the oil changes and all of the other requirements for the vehicle. Now the motor had a tap to it. Ask the head of the shop in the florence sc area and was told that all used monteros tap. Shouldn't be a problem. Now after continuing to drive the car the tap got louder and the oil changes still remain as recommended. Without any reason or warning the motor started to knock louder, the oil light came on. Took the car back to the dealer and found out theknock was caused from the oil not getting to the top of the motor. Now at the dealership they told me that my car wasn't nor is the only one with the same issue. From 20 to 30 a month with the same issue. I had another mechanic check the car also and found the oil pump to be faulty. But now the damage is extreme the motor began to heat up and the bad thing about it is that i was told that it didn't matter if i took care of the car or not cause if the first person didn't take care of the car that it would have stopped at some point while having the car.

I have a 01' mitsubishi montero sport xls 3.0l as of the last week in march i had a problem with my a/c and call auto repair shop to make a appointment. To my surprise the mitsubishi/saturn shop, the place that i had taken it to 6mths to a year be4, my oxygen sensor to be replaced and some other things, was gone out of business. So i call where i purchased the vehicle from, and was told that i could goto a licensed mechanic shop to get my a/c fixed, oxygen sensor had default again, but it still had warranty on it with the previouslyshop so the recentshop could not replace it and i also still had warranty coverage with the credit union that i pay monthly payments to. So i called the warranty group, and the warranty group paid for a/c to be fixed and i only had to pay 100 deductible. I received my suv back about a week later, then i noticed a knocking within the motor so i went back to the repair shop, and was told that i needed a oil change, but i just recently had a tune-up and oil change. So i knew that i didn't need a oil change. The shop could not determine what caused the knocking noise, but on 5- 23-10 my suv had malfunction this time my crankshaft, pulley, rods had separated and the only thing that was holding my engine together was the main bolt. So i got it towed back to the repair shop and i had to get my engine replaced. The warranty group paid for the pre-used engine, and i received my suv back on 6-11-10. I did not drive my truck no more then to my home and parked it in my yard, but on that tuesday june 15, 10 i went into a furniture store for about 20 mins. I'd noticed previously my car would shake as if it was going to fall dead, but wouldn't or there would be a thump like someone had hit me and the car would move slightly.this would only happen when the car was stationary at a light/stop sign or if i was waiting to make a turn.on yesterday, after taking my car in for scheduled maintenanceand having that maintenance completed, i left the dealership. On my way home, i was waiting to turn into a parking lot car shook as if it were about to fall dead ,then lunged forward.i called the dealership to alert them and advised them that the incident frightened me.i was told by the service advisor that another woman with the same type of car had reported a similar incident and had to bring her car inand that they had to replace her engine.i was told at this time, they belied it might be the torque converter.i drove the car back to the dealership and was told they would keep the car, and a technician would drive it to see if the same thing occurred.i called today 3/19/01 and was told by gary, that the technician drove the car for 1 hour and nothing happened.then out of the blue , the same thing i described had occurred.i was told he had a call into the engineering line and they were waiting to hear back.i advised gary i did not want that car back until i was comfortable this would not happen again.he said a tsb had been issued on this situation, but when i checked the website, i was unable to find it.i located only recall info. On the hydraulic brake system.

When the vehicle was purchased the rattling noted in the air conditioning was noted. The aluminum bracket holding the compressor was replaced with a cast iron bracket. We have noticed that the vehicle does not cool down while operating the air conditioning now. I have taken it to a dealerships service department on several occassions to be told it is cooling. It is almost as though the vents do not open to allow the cooled air to flow in. I have also contacted mitsubishi's diamond care service number to be told there is nothing they can do to help. This is a long standing problem. I have had someone check the system outside of a mitsubishi dealership who agrees there is definitely a problem.

When towing vehicle out of ditch the tow hook broke off and went through the tailgate of a 1997 full size dodge pickup.now they say it is not a tow hook it is just a tie down to get it here.

In jan. My wife started to get a whiff of gasoline every now and then when she got out of her 2001 montero sport.it was not enough to arouse suspicion.in the week of 3/27/06, the smell became severe.i found gas running down the gas tank, dripping onto a hose running below it, and to the ground.i brought the vehicle to be repaired at vachon mitsubishi on thurs., 3/30/06.i was contacted by vachon and told that the tank was rotted at the seam and would need to be replaced.i asked if this would be under warranty as the car was only 5 years old and had 44,000 mi.vachon informed me that it would not be under warranty.the repair would cost $1083.i called mitsubishi to question the warranty as i have never heard of a gas tank wearing out so quickly.they informed me that it might be covered under the 7 year/100,000 mile corrosion warranty.i contacted vachon and had them look into it.it was discussed with regional management and they decided that it would not be covered, it would be part of the expired emissions warranty.i again called cust. Service.i told them that this failure was too far out of sorts to be out of warranty.gas tanks last 20 to 40 years and this decision should be reconsidered.i was told that it would be reviewed.i was again refused.i asked that a higher level of management review the case.i was told that it would be done and someone would get back to me.5 days later, i called back because nobody called me.i was told that the case was reviewed again and again they decided against me.my case never got to a higher level of management, it was decided by mr. Tessmer, the regional parts and service manager every time.i asked if i could speak to mr. Tessmer.the answer was no.at this point the car is fixed.it will cost me $1100.06 to pick it up, more than the price quote. My wife and 7 year old had been complaining of frequent headaches.the headaches have subsided since they stopped using the car.

I drove my family to their doctor app. And when i was parked gasoline was dripping down in front of the drivers rear tire onto the pavement upon inspection i saw gasoline running off of the top of the gas tank i then went and told the parking lot attendant what was happening he then had to blockade that area of the parking lot off. I had call to get us a ride home . I had my vehicle towed home and had a mechanic inspect it and he found the steel gas lines were completely rusted thru on the pressure side and the return line as well upon further inspection he found severe frame rot and said it won't pass inspection when it comes due next time.

On my way to a funeral, my trucks transmission stalled on the road.when this started my vehicle started to overheat.when i finally was able to get on the shoulder of the highway my truck was on fire under the hood. I had my car towed to the dealer in richmond, va.right now my truck is still at the dealer awaiting my approval for more repairs to be done.right now my repair bill is at a cost of 2,013.29 and they are now telling me that i need to have my transmission rebuilt.

In december 2002 i purchased my car (2001 mitsubishi montero sport xls 4x4) from a local private seller. The car had about 38,000 at the time and was still under the 60,000 mile manufacturers warranty. The seller insisted he did not have the records of the repairs, but did give me a spreadsheet of routine maintenance for the car. After having the car checked by my regular mechanic i bought the car despite the lack of records since it had low mileage and was still under warranty. I then drove the car and performed the routine maintenance.in december 2003 the car reached 60,000 miles and was therefore due for routine maintenance. Due to my low income while attending graduate school i could not afford to get the service done until the car reached 61,000 miles. I opted not to get the service done at the dealer because of cost. The mechanic (carolina import and domestic, 4235 capital blvd., raleigh, nc, 919-872-0350) immediately informed me the car was slipping between gears and the transmission fluid was black- meaning the transmission slipping was causing the fluid to be burned. The mechanic told me the transmission would need to be repaired soon but suggested i change the fluid every 15k in the meantime. After learning this i immediately approached the seller and requested the service records, if any, and he finally relented. The transmission fluid was changed at 38k by leith mitsubishi cary and it was black then too- demonstrating leith mitsubishi ignored the problem while the car was still under warranty. I then contacted leith mitsubishi and they said the fluid should have been changed at 30k instead of 38k which caused the transmission to fail and they would not fix the car. Following this i contacted numerous mechanics and they all agreed that changing the fluid late would not cause the transmission to fail, that the transmission was failing before the fluid needed to be changed.

When driving gears will change and make vehicle end up going slower. Atother times, vehiclewill stall. Contacted dealer, anddealerwas not willing to do anything.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport.when entering a highway intersection or accelerating from a stop at 5 mph, the vehicle slowly gained speed as if it were in second gear.the only way to correct the issue was to restart the vehicle.the neutral indicator light illuminated when the failure occurred.the dealer stated that there was a service bulletin for this failure and the transmission may have to be rebuilt.the vin, engine size, and service bulletin number were unknown.the failure mileage was 92,000 and current mileage was 100,000.

While driving 50-55 mph noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Consumerpulled over, opened the hood, and saw the transmission on fire. Fire quickly spread to engine. $ amount of damage unknown at this time.

My husband and i purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport 3.5xs june of 2001.it now has 37,000 miles on it and during those 37,000 miles i have had to have the rotors turned twice and have the brakes pads replaced three time since june of 2001.i am not a hard driver nor do i drive recklessly.in my opinion, this is not acceptable for a brand new car.i also know someone who owns a 2001 montero sport es who has also had the same problems.wondering if there was anything that can be done.or if this is normal for a mitsubishi product because if it is, i will never purchase another.thank you for your help.

I have a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport ls 2wd, which i purchased new and approximately 14 month after i purchased with only 7000 mile's at the time, i started hearing some wired noise every time i hit the brake, and the whole vehicle vibrates at the same time, mainly when getting off the freeway, and i want to reduce speed from highway to city speed, at first i though it was the abs, so thatwas why i never paid attention to it, but as i kept driving it, the noise and vibration was getting worse, so , i took it to the dealer,on august 16 03, when the vehicle had 17283 mile's, and they inspected the brakes, and they found that the brake pads were worn out, so they (dealer) told me, that, new pads would fix the problem, i just replaced the brake pads, and i still have the same problem, i like to mention, that, with experiences that i have with other cars that i have had in the past, i have never needed to replace brake pads at 18000 miles, brake pads on all my vehicles last 50000 to 60000 mile's, therefore i think that the reason why these brake pads got worn out to fast, was the noise and vibration that is coming from the front wheels every time i apply the brake, this is a safety related problem, i'm afraid to drive it, mainly on the mountains, hills etc.this noise and vibration has nothing to do with brake pads or rotors, this is something else that the manufacturer has to look at.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport.the contact researched the vehicle on the nhtsa website and found that the vehicle was included in a recall regarding brakes.the vehicle was brought to a dealer, who verified that the vehicle was included in the recall.the dealer agreed to remove the faulty brakes and replace them with another faulty part.the dealer stated that the contactwas responsible for the total cost incurred for the recall.the contact stated that a recall notice was never received because the vehicle was previously owned.the current and failure mileage were 100,000.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport.shortly after purchasing the vehicle in may of 2004, the brakes began failing.while driving approximately 55 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle began sliding.after this incident, the vehicle began making noises continuously.while driving approximately 15 mph around a curve, the vehicle began to tail spin when the brakes were applied.the vehicle was taken to the mitsubishi dealer and they stated that the failure was due to the brake accumulator, which affected the abs.the contact was also informed that the noise was due to the vacuum hose being defective.the brakes have not been repaired at this time.nhtsa campaign id number 01v027000 (service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) was referenced.the current mileage was 107,000 and failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 10/03/08 the consumer stated she had an accident in the vehicle, because another vehicle made a sudden stop and when she applied the brakes, the vehicle mad a noise. Updated 10/07/08.

The rotors and braking system on the 2001 montero sport are undersized for the weight of the vehicle.at 4217 miies, the rear rotors had to be turned.they warp badly, making it very hard to contol when breaking.now at 37k they need turning again, if possible, or replacement.

Our dealer informed us yesterday that both front brake rotors on our vehicle are warped.this has occurred with only 22000 miles on the new vehicle.after investigating further, we've learned that this problem is quite common for the mitsubishi montero.based on the experience of others, we may very well have to replace both rotors every time we replace the front brake pads.this tendency for abnormal, accelerated wear of the rotors is an obvious safety issue.excess wear can lengthen stopping distances, making it difficult for drivers to avoid obstacles.given the frequency with which this problem is occuring (abnormally high rates of rotor warpage), we believe the problem is best explained by either manufacturing defects, or, more likely, a design flaw in the brake/rotor system.both the dealer and mitsubishi customer service have been contacted and the problem disucssed at length. Neither party is willing to replace the rotor assembly.rather they simply wish to turn them - an approach which only delays correction of the problem and ensures added customer costs.please investigate this as we feel it could be a serious safey issue with this particular vehicle.

Front brake rotors keep warping and require replacement every 15000-20000 miles, causing shudder and grabbing.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport. The contact heard a squeaking noise coming from the steering pump pulley when the vehicle was started. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

2001 mitsubushi montero sport...tie rod sleeve on passenger side unexpectedly came apart as i was pulling out from parking space onto busy roadway.this caused me to not be able to steer correctly.mechanic replaced tie rod and feels that it was a manufacturing defect as threads where still intact just fitting was not proper. You have the ability to screw tie rod together and physically pull them apart by hand. Had this happened while driving on highway results could have been catastrophic.before this incident there was no indication of a problem with the tie rods that failed so needless to say when they came apart it was a total shock.i do have the old parts that where removed for inspection if necessary.the repair bill was $285 i was hoping to be able to recoup our expenses.i'm hoping you can advise me on how to do this.thank you.

2001 monter sport xls 2wd 46,000 miles.when vehicle is in motion at any rate of speed the steering feels loose and is also rattling.causes extra effort in stabilizing vehicle in a single direction.was taken to two san antonio based dealers gillman mitsubishi san antonio and northpoint mitsubishi.northpoint mitsubishi diagnosed that the steering column needs to be replaced.although mitsubishi provides powertrain warranty which includes suspension, drivetrain to 60,000 miles mitsubishi corp denied warranty coverage stating that it is not included in the powertrain warranty.after explaining to mitsubishi corp that this is a matter of highway safety the still refuse to rectify the problem.

Consumer was making a turn and heard a noise from linkage. Apparently there was no grease applied to ball joints, fittings and steering linkage fromfactory, and also at dealer.there is no way to find out how much damage it has caused.please provide further information.

While driving on the highway. I lost control of vehicle and proceeded to drive onto shoulder. After quickly checking tires, etc. I noticed the frame had ripped in half. The driver side frame was completely rotted for 4-5 feet. From the front door to the rear wheel well. After inspection of the entire frame the passenger side is unaffected which leads me to believe it is poor metal/frame from the factory.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport. Whiledriving 60 mph with the cruise control, the contact applied minimalpressure to the accelerator pedal and the vehicle accelerated. The contact was able to disengage the cruise control; however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. The contact applied repeated pressure to the brakes until the vehicle began to decrease in speed. He was able to drive the vehicle onto the emergency lane and shut off the engine. When he restartedthe vehicle it exhibited the same failure without the cruise control being engaged. The contact then disconnected and reconnected the battery in order for the vehicle to function normally. The manufacturer stated that they had not received any related complaints and would not provide any assistance. The failure and current mileages were 157,419.
