The contact owns a 2000 mitsubishi montero sport. When retrieving his vehicle from a local repair shop; he proceeded to accelerate and the vehicle stalled. The dealer stated that when removing the battery from the vehicle and replacing it the vehicle computer system reset which caused improper idle. My montero has had significant problems from day one with repeated/numerous visits to several mitsubishi dealerships in my area.i have had all of the same complaints i have read from other owners and am very disappointed that i bought this sport utility and have spent thousands of dollars to repair.the montero has had pull to the right as described, a vibration when driving at any speeds, and a horrible performance of braking that has almost caused several accidents that could have resulted in my life and my daughters and countless other families. I have a lifetime purchase plan for alignments which are performed on a bi-weekly basis and i have also gone through 4 sets of brakes.i have also experienced my montero to just die, completely shut off in the middle of traffic- dangerous!! then after about 10 minutes and everyone honking and cursing me out it startsafter i restart it.also, with this comes a fire burning smell that i have been told by various mechanics that i have an oil leak in my engine.i have since taken the montero back and the dealership has repaired a melted gasket in the engine.i have also replaced all my belts and sparkplugs.the sunroof has had it's share of problems of leaking uncontrolallably when it rains and here in florida it has been better to stand in the rain than in my suv.now my front reading lights under my rear mirror is leaking buckets of water and the dealership wants to charge me over $500.00 for a new sunroof after i paid over invoice for this luxury!all of my brake lights in the rear have blown out numerous times to have to replace.this suv ia the million dollar money pit mistake and do not reccommend anyone to buy! i'm so glad that i am not going crazy and that others have experienced the same and hope to not ever experience my airbags not deploying in an a accident!mitsubishi will have a huge law suit!!

My complaint concerns a technical service bulletin #tsb-00-23-008, issued november 2000. In the bulletin, mitsubishi motors addresses the need to replace the a/t oil pan due to overheating that is caused by the shallowness of the pan. Just prior to this bulletin, in october 2000, production vehicles were equipped with a larger oil drainage pan to eliminate overheating cause by the prior pan.after having my 2000 mitsubishi montero sport given the 60,000 mile servicing in june 2004, i was driving out of town and noticed (for the first time ever) that the a/t temperature light was on, signaling that the automatic transmission was overheating. I pulled over to the side of the road (95 south - 38 miles from richmond, va) and immediately contacted darcars mitsubishi in silver spring, maryland, the dealership that had just serviced my vehicle. My service advisor, becky subsequently informed me of the service bulletin that had been issued regarding this overheat problem. Since i was out of the area, i also contacted mitsubishi dealers in both richmond and fredericksburg, va. Both service department personnel wanted me to bring in the vehicle due to the service bulletin addressing the issue of overheating due to the shallow transmission pan. None, not even the dealership that serviced my car, however, were willing to perform the service free of charge since this is obviously a manufacturers defect. The fredericksburg dealership even wanted me to bring the vehicle in to be serviced again should transmission fluid need to be changed. The fact that all of the dealerships are aware of this manufacturers defect and obviously perform the repair with some degree of consistency, screams the need for this matter to be covered as a recall. The consumer should not be required to pay for something that mitsubishi acknowledges causes potential damage to the powertrain; this is apparently a manufacturers defect and should be covered as such.

Crankshaft pulley broke, steering wheel stuck in the middle of the road.

2000 mitsubishi montero. The engine failed at 60,058 miles. Leith mitsubishi said i did not change the oil and since the warranty expired at 60k miles that they wanted $5000 to replace the engine. I have 5 documented oil changes, and performed several other but the oil chnages places did not have records on computer.

Truck has had a smell similar to natural gas in the cab, especially when idling.the first time we brought it in they checked and found no smell.then we brought in again and found that the camshaft seals were leaking and replaced hoping this would help the problem.the smell consists and we now have trouble when driving and the transmission is slipping in 3rd/4th gear. Both the dealer and mitsubishi feel that the smell is from the type of gas and is normal.we have switched from mobil to shell to montori and it happens with them all.this a severe exhaust like smell and we are afraid that it is not healthy for our small children, and it should not be normal to deal with.

Brakes, grind and squeak, had them checked was told that they were fine. Also had a front wheel allignment due to right pulling!!!! and also i have experienced when front windows are rolled up and the back are down,,you do have air pressure that is not good!!!! all complaints that have been noted by previous consumers are right on the money as far as this montero sport vehicle, and something should be done to avoid incurring problems.

The contact owns a 2000 mitsubishi montero sport. The contact stated that the vehicle was spilling fuel from the gasket on the tank known as the leveler gasket. The dealer stated that the failure was similar to recall 04v319000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage) but the model year was not included. The current and failure mileages were approximately 103,000.

At times the interior light will not turn on when opening the door. Also the doors lock by it's self.

I never received nhtsa campaign id number : 01v027000 issued to mitzibu. Owners in feb 2001 which states my vehicle has noncompliant brake vacuum hoses. Remedy was to have dealer service center repair this problem; however i was unaware due to not receiving notification.can i still have this free service?in oct 2003 i paid $182.75 for brake repairs. Can i be reimbursed for amtpaid for brake repair in oct 2003 due to this problem? thank you.

The automatic transmission temp light illuminated.the consumer pulled over and waited for the light to go off, but it never did. The transmission stared to jerk. Please provide any further information.

While driving, the automatic transmission temperature light illuminated. The consumer pulled over to check the owner's manual. The manual stated to pull over and wait until the automatic transmission temperature light goes off and to proceed driving. The consumer started driving and the transmission illuminated again. The consumer managed to pull over again. The engine started to smoke and the consumer took the vehicle to aamco transmission who diagnosed the transmission as being damaged and needed to be replaced. Upon completion of the transmission, the vehicle continued to experience rough shifting. *sc

Initially there was a rattling sound when the gear selector was pushed a certain way. The mitsubishi tech's would not even look at the problem till i figured out how to reproduce the noise for them. Then on long trips the a/t lamp would come on. I would pull over and let the engine cool the proceed until the next a/t incident. Some of the problem was caused by the transmission having bolt heads rattling around inside the trans housing. Other problems were caused by porosity of the trans bell housing leaking trans fluid. Mitsubishi 'fixed' the leaks and bolts rattling around inside the trans, but now on trips of 100 miles or so when you accelerate from a stop during the rev up to shifting around the 2nd to 3rd gear shift the tach will indicate a high rev then fall back when the shift is accomplished by the trans. The vehicle will 'buck'in response to this shifting anomaly. This effect will not happen unless the engine has been running for an hour or so. I now no long take this vehicle on long trips unless compelled to do so.

Mitsubishi montero sport, year 2000 - automatic transmission temperature light came on after driving ~ 200 miles at 70 mph.stopped after driving 20 more miles.smoke was coming from engine compartment near transmission.appears transmission fluid was venting and hitting hot engine.allowed car to cool down, as recommended in owners manual.then proceeded to auto mechanic who confirmed vehicle was shifting hard between 2 & 3rd gear and was not locking in the torque converter after going into overdrive.vehicle has ~ 118,000 miles at the time.same thing occurred back when vehicle only had ~ 30,000 miles and dealer did something at that time.i notice there are a number of complaints about this on nhtsa website.suggest mitsubishi should be required to rectify the problem at their expense.

Transmission is not shifting properly, and it is difficult to gain speed ,but only at lower speeds. From time to timevehicle will jump out of gear. Contacted dealer, and the dealer hasvehicle at the dealership waiting forpiece to come in.

I am very disappointed in my 2000 montero sport and the lack of answers that i have received in the past.in addition my check engine light came on for the first time, when i took the car in i was told the problem had been fixed. Later the same day it came back on, i returned the following day, and was told to find out what was wrong i would have to leave the car one complete day to determine what the problem was since nothing appeared to be wrong. I left it and when i picked it up i was told that the cars computer was trying to place the car in 2 different gears at the same time and the problem was resolved. A few days later while driving on the highway on my way to work the car shuddered and shifted into neutral on its own and refused to move, subsequently the air-condition started blowing hot air. When i was finally able to get the car to drive it remained in 1st gear and would not shift to second. At that point i took the car to the dealership to find out what was going on, i was told that something was wrong with the transmission but they couldnt diagnose what exactly was wrong and the car was returned to me. The car was then taken to aamco transmission to find the problem since the cause could not be found at the dealership. I was told the following occurred over time and in this order: torque converter failed (causing the shuddering and jerking when gears were changed), pump failed due to converter problem, transmission failed due to pump failure, bushings and plastic parts were warped due to high temperature caused by pump failure.currently they are unable to locate replacement parts that will fit my car which is extremely frustrating. The reason i am writing this letter is because i have spent over $3000 this year on my car and now i have to purchase a transmission, torque converter, transmission pump, and air-condition unit. I am a student, i am not rich or well off.

I just purchased the vehicle may of 2004 and already it needs a new transmission, i have talk to alot of other people and there vehicle is doing the same thing.

While driven at 85 mph vehicle caught on fire under the hood. Prior the incidentdealership provide a general tune up.the insurance company indicated toconsumer this vehicle had recall on transmission, and that was the problem.

July, 2005 a/transmission shifting erratic, slipping, creating hazardous driving conditions due to loss of control. Mitsubishi dealership performed a/t flush and erratic behavior was cleared. On first road trip after this repair, the neutral shift indicator, "n", began to flash after vehicle was traveling on highway for 45 minutes. According to the owners manual, this indicates the a/t is overheating and vehicle should be brought to a stop to avoid damage and/or injury. I have taken the vehicle back several times without any resolution as the dealership claims they were not able to duplicate my complaint. On my last visit of 12/19/06, the dealership recommends i upgrade the a/t oil pan to a larger one per tsb 00-23-008 at my cost. This potential fire hazard is not due to a damage or a part that has worn out. This is an obvious design defect that the manufacturer should correct at no cost to the consumer. Please assist me in resolving this situation.

Mistubishi montero sport 2000- automatic transmission temperature light comes on when there are more than 2 persons in the vehicle, or when there is cargo in the back of the vehicle when driving distances over 1 hour in length.pulling over and stopping would let light go off after a/t temp cooled down.also, would leak a/t fluid when light comes on.took vehicle to dealer, they told me it is a common problem with this make/model and that in order to prevent a/t damage, i had to have a larger a/t fluid pan installed to allow for the "overheating of the fliud", or else i was not to travel with more than one other person or cargo in my vehicle or it would damange the transmission.it cost me over $350 to replace the a/t pan.i truely believe this should be a recall, as why should i have to replace something like this if it wasn't correclty installed/put together in the first place!

While driving at highway speeds the "n" light on the gear shift started flashing.this indicates that the automatic transmission is overheating, and that i should pull over to let it cool per the owners manual and a sticker on the drivers door.this is inconvenient and has happened on numerous occasions before...at least 20 times.i have gone to the dealer many times to have this fixed to no avail.if the mfr. Knows that the problem exists, why can't the fix it?

The 2000 montero sport had the same problem as the 1995-1999 model.the crankshafthas come off the vehicle on four different occasions.had to pay thousands of dollars ,including $1400.00 on the last visit to mitsubishidealership.now ithappened again and the dealer tells me the crankshaft itself has to be replace and while they are doing that , they might as well replaced the piston to,which will cause thousands more dollars in repairs.mitisineeds to own up to there responsibilities, and honor these repairs.why will a dealership service department tell a customer they can not fix the problem.

Transfer case came apart and wheels locked up. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****760652

I went to put a child's safety seats into car and the seatbelt would not lock in place at all. When i bought car i told dealership that the seat belt didn't work and they said the would check that did not check seatbelt still does not work. I call mitsubishi and they said that the seatbelts were out of their time frame for replacement and that there was nothing they could do to help me. All back seatseatbelt do not work in manner they are to and would like something done. Car is a mitsubishi 2000 montero limited sport.

In a front end crash, the airbags did not deploy and the seat belts did not work.the driver hit the steering wheel and was injured.

2000 mitsubishi montero involved in a rollover accident. Consumer states that the ten inch fused loop/energy management loop to the right front passenger seat belt is defective. This accident had a death involved.the lawyer stated the fused loop/energy management loop deployed, the added 10 inches of slack in the seat belt system would eliminate the ability of the seat and restraint system to properly restrain the occupant during a rollover with fatal consequences.

My son fell asleep while driving. He veered into the median and flipped 5 to 6 times. On first impact his seat belt released, therefore he was thrown up and down each time he flipped. On inspection of the seat belt, it was found that the red release button was ripped out of the receiver part of the seat belt. My son missed five days of work because of the accident. If his seat belt would have held up he might have missed only one day of work. The only lingering injury that he sustained was an injured tail bone that still bothers him. I contacted mitsubishi the day after the wreck and explained to them what happened. The wreck happened on april 25, and it took mitsubishi until september 13th to render a decision. They decided that external forces were applied by some undetermined object in the vehicle to the red release button at the top of the buckle. There was no way anything hit the red release button, because on initial impact my son was thrown to the top of the car. I do still have the vehicle, and it is tarped so nothing could happen to it. I would like to know if i need to keep it or sell it for parts.

Consumer states that driver's front belt will not pull out of the retractor.

The coil spring suspension was inadequate to support the weight of the vehicle properly with a full tank of gas not including passengers, which caused the vehicle to bottom out, which resulted in the passenger sustaining a back injury, also the rear seats did not contain enough padding.

The brakes were replaced twice.scc

I purchased the vehicle in dec of 2000 i started having problems since 6-22-03 i have had 4 sets of break pads 2 sets of rotors, new calipers and the hardware replaced each time.i also took the car to the dealer while it was still under warranty and they told me everything was fine with the braking system.shortly after i lost control of my brakes while driving with my family.i have about 50,100 miles on the car and i need a new set of brakes again. *la

Alignment is off.also, front brakes squeak. The rear is bottoming out when passangers are in the car.this makes the car hard to handle when on the highway or surface streets.

With less than 40k miles on my 2000 mitsubishi montero sport, the brake pads have been replaced three times, the rotors replaced once. Now two local mechanics tell me that my vehicle's brake pads cover less than 50% of the rotor, causing significantly reduced braking capability. The root cause appears to be that the vehicle has 14" rotors on trucks designed for 15" rotors (and 15" wheels). The result is that the brake system wears out quickly and, in the opinion of my local goodyear dealership, presents a severe safety hazard. The goodyear dealer actually told me that he would not recommend driving the vehicle.

While leaving a parking lot. Lost steering capability. During troubleshooting found the drivers side outer tie rod had separated from the adjust tube. Both lock nuts were tight and in the original positions and the adjust tube and inner tie rod were tight. Threads of the tie rod did not appear to be stripped but the adjust tube would not tighten to the outer tie rod lock nut. This is the first and only instance of this failure on this car. Dealer is replacing both drivers and passenger side inner tie rod, outer tie rod and adjust tube at my cost. My concern is the severity of the failure. If this would have happened while on the highway it would have been a major accident with deaths or major injury occurring. Auto is 10 years old with approx 120000 miles. Manufacturer and dealer both indicated that this is a wear item but is not part of an inspection.

Upon further inspection, he noticed that part of the frame was fractured. The contact reattached the frame and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to repair the failure. After diagnosis, he was advised that the entire frame exhibited severe rust, fracturing and the vehicle was no longer able to be driven. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure and current mileage was 143,000.

My mitsubishi montero sport 00, has frame rot, will not pass inspection,it definitely should be a factory recall, so many complaints, and safe issues

The contact owns a 2000 mitsubishi montero sport. While the contact was having his vehicle inspected he was informed that it was rotten and that there were holes in the frame. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 134000.

I heard a noise while driving at low speeds while hitting bumps, when i stopped driving and looked under the vehicle i noticed the frame was rusted completely through to the other side, and especially bad where the rear differential bracket is attached to the frame, its so loose it doesn't look safe to drive.

I took my vehicle for a back brake inspection.it was found that the underbody of the vehicle was severely corroded with rust and some underbody framework rotted through.the structure of the vehicle was declared unrepairable and unsafe to drive due to underbody rust and corrosion to the metal.

For many years now, lift gate occasionally wouldnot open, after opening only a short time before. For example, i would load groceries in the back, get home and be unable to get the liftgate to open to get the groceries out. I could not figure out any associated reason for this. Recently, (feb. '07) gate would not close at the store, on arriving home, gate would not open and has remained that way since. I have been unable to use the back of my vehicle since then.

I brought my vehicle to a garage for routine maintenance, upon inspection attendant informed me that the frame of the vehicle was severely corroded and unsafe to drive. I am stunned to learn this, as i am the original owner of the vehicle and it has been garaged since ownership. I am angry, frustrated and feel as a consumer this is not right.

The contact owns a 2000 mitsubishi montero sport. The contact stated that when driving at various speeds, the vehicle would shake excessively. The contact owns a 2000 mitsubishi montero sport. The contact stated that the vehicle was having routine maintenance performed when the mechanic discovered that the chassis was completely corroded. The dealer was contacted but they did not offer any assistance and the manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 115,000.

I took my car to inspect a banging noise under the left rear of the auto.upon ispection it was found that the frame of the car was rusted and rotted thru the entire frame . It was fractured in spots and parts rusted entirely away. It was found to be unsafe to drive.it can not be repaired.the machanic told me it is a defect in the metal.the car has never been in a flood and i don't live near sald water. The rest of the car is in good shape. The car is now undrivable.

I just bought my montero sport 3 months ago.when testing driving the vehicle i felt pulling to the right and shaking at higher speeds.the dealer said it was just the tires and they would do an aligment.i purchased the vehicle and bought new tires.my warranty was out by the time i figured out it was not the tires.this vehicle always shakes and feels like a fish out of water, after serveral aligments it still pulls very hard to the right when u let go of the steering wheel.i wish the company would look into what the problem is and fix it.

Vehicle vibrates at speeds of 55 and above.i've taken it back to the dealership 11 times and i have another appointment on 2/28/02 for this same problem.their solution seems to be to rotate and balance the tires.that's not the solution because the problem still exists.

I heard a noise while driving at low speeds while hitting bumps, when i stopped driving and looked under the vehicle i noticed the frame was rusted completely through to the other side, and especially bad where the rear differential bracket is attached to the frame, its so loose it doesn't look safe to drive.

Since purchase of vehicle there has beenconstant vibration, taken to dealer 4 times. Dealer balanced wheels, and did front alignment, this did not remedy the problem.

Vehicle has had 5 alignment adjustments done.vehicle checked by dealer, who could not advise why problem continued to occur.alignment problems began at 9000 miles.

Vehicle drifts to the right and pulls right when braking.

Vibrations occur in the steering wheel at moderate speeds, with visible shaking occurring at times.after several visits to the service department, the regional manager met with me and told me this is common in these vehicles. When i purchased this vehicle in sept. 2001, i had the expectation that a wheel balancing would remedy the situation.a wheel balancing removed most of the vibration, but the residual vibrations/shaking is unacceptable.it's very upsetting to pay $25,000 for a vehicle that provides such a poor driving experience.i regret that i bought it.

While driving at any speed and when depressing the brakesconsumer can feltvibration in the steering wheel.sears auto center informed the consumer that the front shocks needed to be replaced. Changed the front shocks, but vibrations was still evident.

Alignment is off.also, front brakes squeak. The rear is bottoming out when passangers are in the car.this makes the car hard to handle when on the highway or surface streets.

A defective upper control arm; dealer replaced the following part on two occasions under warranty. No reason given why this problem continued to reoccur. The dealer states that the upper control arms are defective but the manufacturer did not acknowlege it.

The coil spring suspension was inadequate to support the weight of the vehicle properly with a full tank of gas not including passengers, which caused the vehicle to bottom out, which resulted in the passenger sustaining a back injury, also the rear seats did not contain enough padding.

Inadequate rear suspension/suspension sagging.

I have a 2000 mitsubishi monterosport xls.the rear suspension bottom out when car was loaded.when i had warranty mitsu dealer said nothing was wrong. Now it expired, fixing it will cost $600.this should be a safety recall. All 2000 monterosport have this problem according to many forums i have seen.

Alternator send overcharge to batteryit make blow fuses and affected the sensors at the automatic transmission was drving to my daugther house around 1,5 hrs to go

I was pulling into my sisters drive which has a big trash dispenser in it & i already had my foot on the brake going about 1mph the suv lunged forward like i was hit from behind & my vehicle crashed into the trash dispenser & that then hit their fence which bent. There is damage to my front end & now turning the wheels causing scraping of the front tire. This is not the first time i have had it lunge like this. Several times before so took to mechanic he put on machine to see if transmission was going but it was not. I am the original owner of this vehicle &:only one time did i get a recall for a plug to be replaced but there are several others even having to do with brakes.i have had family members in my suv that can validate issues happening. I hope someone will act on this since i have read this has happened to several others. I have left a phone message also in regards to this. I was so scared i actually was sick to my stomach when i thought what could of happened.

While stopping at a red lightlight turn green and vehicle accelerated, butvehicle in front did not.consumer stepped onbrake pedal, butbrakes did not stopvehicle that jumped intoother vehicle.

My wife was driving are 00 mits montero sport, on the fwy she try to slow down to get out of the fwy. She was pressing on the brake but the car was not slowing down so she put the transmission to lower gears to make the suv to slow down it help but not to get the suv to stop. So she hit the car in-front. So after the car came to a stop after hitting the car the rpm were rubbing high so she put the car in park and turn the car off.so police came over because car was on the blocking the off-ram. When the tow truck driver show up and look under the hood he toll my wife that the throttle it was stock in the open position that what cause her not to be able to stop .... The officer toll my wife she was luck.

The contact owns a 2000 mitsubishi montero sport. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle accelerated on its own without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 137,363.

(1) the car's cruise control was set at 65 mph on the freeway.the traffic ahead began to slow, and the driver applied the brakes.the cruise control would not disengage; instead, the engine proceeded to accelerate to compensate for the application of the brakes.(2) the driver quickly turned off the cruise control.had this not been done, it would have resulted in a collision.(3) this is not an intermittent problem.this happens everytime the cruise control is applied.the car will be taken in for repair.

When consumerput car in reversevehicle started to race, and it flew back like gas pedal was stuck.the vehicle accelerated at maximum speed colliding against the garage.

Noise was coming from front windshield. Dealer was notified, and made the repairs. Currently, problem is reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information.

The driverside wheel is popping, dealer found no problems. (attorney for client)

After changing the tire and then replacing the spare for the fixed tire, the wheel lug nut on the front passenger side of the vehicle broke off.this is the second time this has occurred.the wheel screws are also all rusted and the lug nuts have a tendency to get bent when trying to remove them.the last time i had to pay for the screw replacement.i will go to the dealer tomorrow to discuss the second incident.the lug nuts appear to be made of aluminum or other soft metal and easily bend.all the wheel screws have rusted.
