Started vehicle, drove around the block, vehicle suddendly burst into flames. Possibly an electrical fire.
I was driving the car on the hwy. When we reached 65 mph like a lot of these other people are saying but it was my distributor that went out. Since i have a manual transmission it would start and drive but every time it reached 65 mph or 3400 rpm the engine would sputter and stall out. Also i have had to put a second engine in the vehicle due to a timing belt slipping and breaking the lower unit off the car. The air conditioner pulley had 5 screws break off causing the a/c to blow out, i had to replace it . The window pulley system cable broke causing the manual window to not roll up or down on drivers side. Also the wiring going to the headlights are messed up, the lights work but you have to raise the hood and mess with the back of the halogen to get it to come on. There is an unusual amount of rust on the drivers side rear on the frame. My fuel gauge when full only reads 3/4. About 2 weeks after having the car a spring in the drivers seat began poking me in the back. I got a seat from a junk yard.i have paid for all the repairs on the car so far and am looking for either retribution or someone to help with these problems from re-occurring. My incint date is when thing began to happen and till this day i am fighting battles like the tachometer begins jumping around when running at constant speeds w/o engine revving or anything. One more thing the haze on the window has caused it almost impossible to drive at night.

It can be clearly seen that the car that i am leasing is a genuine lemon.it has been frustrating having this car that i feel is unsafe and has continuous problems that a unresolved since only 600 miles. (i have only 37,000 miles on it now) from this web site it is apparent that i am not the only one that is dealing with the negligence and utmost poor quality that mitsubishi calls a car.fuel gauge, front rotors, rear drums, trans coller clamp, trans mount insulator, lower control arm.

The automatic transmission failed, consumer contacted manufacturer was informed mileage too high to be covered under warranty.*nlm
Several weeks ago, the car had intermittent at transmission "sluggishness" trying to accelerate from a stop. Felt like it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear, trying to downshift to 1st. On or about 6/31/02 the car transmission died, no power at idle, and barely able to coast into parking lot. At exact moment of failure, car's clock and radio also lost power. Next day, upon returning to vehicle, started up and transmission engaged properly through all gears while driving in parking lot, without sluggishness. Clock and radio were also working fine. I drove the car approximately 5 miles to mechanic's shop (not dealer). Mechanic spent next two days trying unsuccessfully to recreate the symptoms. He also had another shop's mechanic specializing in transmission repairs inspect it. Both could find nothing wrong mechanically, but suspected electrical problems inside the transmission or a related controller. On the third day of the original mecanic's testing, it died as before, barely able to get it back to the shop. He recommended a mitsubishi dealership to look at it due to the technical nature of the suspected problem area. He again reaffirmed that i should not expect any mechanical repairs. Dealer (holler mitsubishi, closest located dealer) looked it over and called me back same day to inform me that an entire new transmission was needed, as well as several motor mounts. The total cost estimate for this work is $2392.58 + tax. With 66,000 miles on the car, he said after 60,000 miles it was out of warranty and repair charges are my responsibility. I strongly requested he recheck with his technician and svc mgr and to reconsider this as a goodwill warranty repair as it was a manufacturing product failure, not a normal wear and tear issue. I reiterated the findings of other mechanics -no mechanical failures found. Same answer came back, out of warranty, me to pay.internet research shows lots of tranny problem history.who else can i contact for this???please help!

While driving in the local area traveling about 10mph and making a left turn at an intersection, transmission changed from 1st to 2nd gear, but vehicle started idling androlling into the parking lot.this was not the first time this has happened.one morning uponstarting vehicle, andshifting it out of park into reverse, shifting was rough, could feel transmission jumping.had the vehicle towed home.didn't contact the dealer.
Transmission failed after only 65,000 miles.had to be totally rebuilt at cost of $3,000.immediately afterwards, all four motor mounts failed.very angry and frustrated.no one can justify why the car was running fine without a single noise one day and then the transmission and then engine mounts would fail without warning.
Transmission would shift very hard into another gear. When ever vehicle comes to a stop, it would jerk. Can hear & feel it when it happens. After accelerating, would remain in one gear, and make grinding noises before changing. Not at dealership.
On 10/13/00 the transmission went out completely. Upon having my transmission rebuilt, the mechanic notified me that part of the problem was the transmission had gotten way too hot. He said he would either have to replace the radiator or add an external cooler, or they would not warranty the rebuilt transmission. I told them to go ahead and add an external cooler. Upon getting ready to add an external cooler, the mechanic noted that i already had one. However it was routed incorrectly from the transmission to the external cooler to the radiator, and back to the transmission. It should have been routed from the transmission to the radiator to the external cooler, and back to the transmission. This was a manufacturing error. I am the second owner of the car and have spoken with the first owner. Neither of us had the transmission worked on except for regular servicing, which obviously would not require removal of the transmission or a check of the external cooler routing. I have notified mitsubishi and they said they are not responsible due to the fact that the car is out of warranty. I believe, however, that other owners should be notified as i am sure my galant is not the only one with the external cooler routed incorrectly. I do not believe that owners should be responsible for paying $1,800 to $2,400 to have the transmission replaced due to a manufacturing error on mitsubishi's part.

We have received a recall on the steering linkage in our car. We are currently on an oversea's tour in germany with the us army. We have call and was told that they could do nothing for us. Are there any dealers over here that can checkthis problem for us under warrantee or do we have to pay to get it checked out. If we pay out of pocket for it to get checked and fixed if needed can we get reimbursed for doing this.

Specifically, the drivers-side mat gets stuck under the accelerator pedal.it is a hazard, especially when trying to accelerate onto a merge or when passing other vehicles.the dealer installed a clip to hold the mat in place, however, the clip doesn't even stay in place.on many, many occasions, i will step on the accelerator and the mat gets stuck, forcing the acceleration even further and not letting you slow down the acceleration speed.in other words, it feels like you have no control over the vehicle's acceleration speed, for the mat actually holds the pedal down.i believe the mats are defective, either too thick to fit under the accelerator pedal or too heavy for the clip.i drove the car for an entire year, thinking there was something wrong with the accelerator until i got my car washed and the mats were adjusted (pulled further back under the drivers seat) before i realized the mat was getting caught under the accelerator.i've reported this to mitsubishi on numerous occasions, and even had a mat clip installed, but i've found that the only thing that works, is if i actually retro-fit the mat and turn it backwords.then and only then, does the mat stay in place, but only temporarily, for when you get in and out of the car or in normal foot to pedal maneuvers (when driving or braking) the mat shifts under the accelerator pedal again, causing the accelerator to stick again.thank you.
Consumer was traveling about 35mph.floor mat got stuck underneath the accelerator. Consumer ran into some brick, and airbags didn't deploy.

The gas pedal is stiff. Upon quick acceleration, the throttle is stuck wide open, making the engine race to maximum rpm's and the car can reach it's maximumspeed. The gas pedal has to be kicked repeatedly, to get the car to deccelarate. This has occured many times over the last 5 years, but we could never duplicate on demand. I can now duplicate it on demand. I wonder if any one else has reported this problem with 1995-1998 galants ?
