My 2002 eclipse started to sound very loud. Itook it back to the dealer.they blew me off . They never checked the car in the shop but they said the car was ok.one week later the engine ceased due to lack of oil. They refused to fix the car because of "customer negligence".they state that as a result of thier investigation the did not leak or burn the 3 quarts of "missing oil". Threfore where could it be.this obviosly the oil was never there .mitsubishi does not want to admit this even thogh it is the only possible thing that could have happened.please help . Ispent 30000 dollars on this car and cant afford to fix it.nlm
I bought this car from fowler mitsubishi, norman, ok and every time i run the a/c, the entire drivers side (front & rear) fills up with water. (2 inches deep) no one seems to know or care what to do.

After checking out service engine codes p0456 and p0457 (evaporative emission control system leak detected) i found the fuel filler neck tube and all vent lines totally corroded through. The vehicle is a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse and this assembly is located in the rear right side wheel well. Driving area is the northeast and found sand and debris packed all around assembly where tubes make a 90 degree turn through a support/protective bracket.i repaired with a new fuel neck assembly (part no. Mr73836) purchased from a local dealership at a cost of $200 for parts only. No fuel had yet leaked out but would have in a short time if this part was not replaced. Dealer stated that this vehicle was not recalled for this problem but other mitsubishi models around this same year had been recalled for this same condition.
Consumer states that the gas tank has a hole in it.cause is unknown.please provide any further information.ts
The contact owns a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse. The contact stated that upon refueling the vehicle, fuel leaked out through the fuel neck due to rust. The contact also stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated.the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 185,000.
Transmission stops functioning due to wave/cushion spring failure.

Dt: started having problems shifting and started hearing a noise sounding like metal spinning. Was told bytwo dealers that the noise was normal. He has had the reverse synchros, pressure plate and clutch replaced. Work done at dealer where he bought it. Was told by manufacturer that they will research the problem.in late feburary came to stopwhenhe went ot take off he heard loud metal clanking noises and shearing noises. Parked it then. His dealer went out of business and had to take the car to another dealer who said it was the input shaft and input shaft seal. Was told onriginally it was a manufacturers defect. Now the dealer is saying it is not a manufacturers defect. The defective input shaft and input shaft seal has totally distroyed the transmission. The warrantycompany is saying it is owner fault and all they will pay for is th input shaft and input shaft seal.
Clutch feels sluggish in 2nd- 5th gear, like almost a slip. Only have 27k miles on it and i don't abuse my car in anyway. A few other of my friends experience the same problems with their mitsubishi eclipses.
Dtconsumer stated that the front passenger seat tract malfunctioned.the consumer waiting for the service dealership to repair it.
While driving northbound on 95 in virginia (about 20 mins outside of richmond) my 2002 mitsubishi eclipse's accelerator became stuck.the car ended up overheating and the brakes failed (the front driver rotor actually ripped apart) before i put the car into neutral.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25 mph on normal road conditions, the antilock brake system did not function properly, and there was no response from both front brakes.also, the brake pedal went to the floor when this occurred.there were no warning signals prior to the incident.the vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer.
Abs system failed during emergency manuvers, turned onto wrong side of road to avoid an accident. Found myself on the wrong side of the island. I noticed a sharp turn and slammed on the brakes and tried to turn into the turn. The car remained going in a straight line with tires turned and braked applied. I then proceeded to hit the curb straight on and then the front of my car was on the grass. The car sustained major damage to the upper and lower control arms rim and tire. On looker saw front tires locked up and the rear tires rotating freely. Luckily this didn't happen with a person infront of me. I have pictures of the skid marks noting the abs failure.

I have a black, 2002 mitsubishi, eclipsegt and the paint is coming off.the roof and the hood paint is almost down to the base metal.i have also seen other eclipse with the same issue.
I bought a black 2002 mitsubishi eclipse in 2004. The paint job seemed fine but soon i realized that my paint is dissolving off my car! the clear coat is almost completely gone and i am afraid my car will soon start to rust. I have seen many other black eclipses with the same problem. I believe that the manufacturer did not apply the black paint or the clear coat correctly on the black 2002 eclipses. I feel like the manufacturer should be responsible for fixing the problem because they did not make their product to last.
The failure is my dashboard. The care is a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gs. The dash started cracking all over the top back in september. At least 4 other people i know with the same car have the same issue. Forums that i am a member of also have many third generation eclipse owners complaining about the same thing. The manufacturer does not recognize this issue as a defect and will do nothing to resolve the issue.
I have a black i guess you can call it black and white 2002 mitsubishi eclipse.the clear coat it completely off and the black paint is just about gone.i have rust spots coming through now. It first started on the hood about a year ago and now it is everywhere. I also had to replace two of my rims because they were bent.now i have a shimmy in my steering wheel when i get up to 65mph this started about a year ago also.i have gotten new tires and rims on it hoping that would help the problem but it is just as bad as it was last year.
Vehicle was purchased used with a severly cracked dash. Apparently an occuring problem in the 2000-2006 mitsubishi eclipses.
There is a major defect in the dashboards of mitsubishi eclipse's (years 2000-05). The dashboard will crack as the car hits uneven road such ash pot holes. In the heat and cold although covered and protected fro direct sunlight the dash will expand and retract in size creating small fractures that can crack. Once the cracks become large enough pieces will either fly out towards the driver or fall into the heating and cooling ducts causing damage to the cars blower motor. It is also possible for pieces of the dashboard to shatter around the passenger airbag during a collision causing fatal damage to the passengers or driver. This is not a case by case basis but on every 2000-05 mitsubishi eclipse i have come across.
Dashboard has cracked in two. This is the second dashboard that has been replaced in this car, dodge and mitsubishi will not do anything to rectify this problem.
After having my car washed and detailed in late may of 2008, i noticed a white deterioration of paint on the hood.over the past few months the damage has spread over the hood and the trunk of the vehicle like a fungus.i recently went online to research the problem and discovered hundreds of mitsubishi owners are experiencing the same problems.most have stated that mitsubishi has been notified of the problem and will not take responsibility for the defect as the car is "no longer under the 36 month warranty period".many of the complaints have noted the cost of repair as high as $3,500 - 9,000 to repaint the car.to repair the car could be more than the kelley blue book value for some owners.i have found no information as to whether or not a class action lawsuit has been filed, however, a gentleman in pa is organizing consumers to initiate a case.there are several websites that have been created (ie:deadeclipse.com; mitsubishisucks.com) as a forum for hundreds of dissatisfied customers to voice their disappointment with the company/product.it seems unusual that with hundreds of complaints circulating about the manufacturer's defect (clear coat paint) on many of its models, the nhtsa has no record of investigation or recalls.please consider this a formal complaint and initiate a formal investigation.i look forward to hearing from you.please contact me as soon as possible.thank you.
I own a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt with a paint-peeling problem. The vehicle has a horrible paint-peeling problem all over the top areas of the car.i bought the car with about 48,000 miles, and the paint problem started about two thousand miles later.i have seen many, many vehicles with the same problem as my car.i took my vehicle to a mitsubishi dealership so that they could take pictures and send them in.i received a response about three weeks later saying that they would not do anything to the car because i was not the original owner and the vehicle was out of warranty.the fact that i wasn't the original owner has nothing to do with the paint being a problem on other people's cars.they refuse to accept that the defect is on their behalf and refuse to fix the problem.my vehicle is beginning to rust and i am not able to afford the repainting of my car.the vehicle will just continue to rust and become a road hazard that is out of my control.i take well-above decent care of my vehicles, but there is nothing i could do about the paint. While it may not be a road hazard or cause in deaths or injuries, it does cause excessive, and unnecessary, rust which would eventually lead to hazardous vehicles, which people cannot afford to fix because they are still paying for the vehicle.thank you for taking the time to read this.chad
The contact owns a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse. While in park, the contact noticed that there were multiple fractures across the dashboard. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.
The dashboard on my 2002 mitsubishi eclipse cracked several years ago. I had no idea what had happened, as i was not involved in an accident. I had assumed that it possibly got too hot from the sun one day. I was appalled to hear that this is a common problem. Parts of a car should not break in two or three pieces. Mitsubishi should take responsibility for their issues. I have to take a bite in the value of the vehicle, the funds should come out of mitsubishi's pocket, not mine! i also am having issues with the paint on the spoiler. The paint has strangely disappeared and the part has turned white. It's weird! again, i feel that if mitsubishi had a problem with their paint jobs, they should fix them!
My door handle on the driver's side of my 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt broke off into my hand when i was opening the door.the door handle appears to have literally snapped in half from inside the door cavity where it was connected.clearly a defective part.my car is in great shape--i am very surprised this happened.after talking to a mitsubishi dealer, the handle itself costs about $45; to paint it costs $110; and it's another $150 for labor, for a total of $305 plus tax.not a cost one would expect to incur on a 2002 vehicle.
2002 mitsubishi eclipse the liftback door suddenly fell. *njthe consumer stated the liftback detached from the left piston and violently slammed shut. The piston assembly had to be welded back into place.

Ron marhofer mitsubishi's service department has attempted to fix this problem twice and refuses to attempt another repair.we have been told by area body shops that the problem could be from a broken support in the frame.
2002 mitshabishi eclipse rear bumper started to burn and i had just parked at work i was found slumped over behind the wheel apparently from the fumes of the burning plastic. I hope my reporting this removes plastic in areas that may be ignited.
While parked rear end caught on fire. No injuries reported.
Eclipse gt, left rear tire blewout from rim and rim bent.consumer feels that these rims should not bend from a blowout.
Have a black 2002 eclipse rs, the tires lasted longer than the paint job, yet under the bumper to bumper warranty the paint is not covered!!how can you sell a vehicle when inappropriate paint was used.this paint fiasco happened at 42,000 miles.
While driving northbound on 95 in virginia (about 20 mins outside of richmond) my 2002 mitsubishi eclipse's accelerator became stuck.the car ended up overheating and the brakes failed (the front driver rotor actually ripped apart) before i put the car into neutral.
The sunroof failed to open, the dealer replaced the push button assembly twice.

Wheels are suseptable to damage under normal driving conditonseven the slightest obsticle ,such as speed bump, road work ,ect..never seen such a weak wheel , well being and all the unsightly noise (from ol warpy) just not something you would not expect from a car thats only around six months oldafter three years of manufactoring these wheels they would relize all the problems, or did they(new wheels for 2003, good idea! ) now what about us?nlm
The contact owns a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt. The contact stated that the rims were bending abnormally and causing the steering wheel to shake excessively. The rims were replaced four times to no avail. The contact informed the manufacturer but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. This is the second time that i've had to replace my rim due to the lip bending back causing the tire to deflate.both times it was on the front tire.looking at all the other complaints this is a common defect with the mitsubishi rims which results in decreased steering control and needs to be address before someone gets seriously injured.
The front passenger side wheel gets bent while going over potholes or rail road crossing at normal speeds. In the 1.5 years i've had this (2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt) car i have had to get the wheel straightened 3 times already. The tire looses pressure over a couple of days after going over the bump becoming completely flat.
2002 eclipse coupe, ok this is a major promblem, hope someone will listen the wheels (rims) crack on these cars "cheap" both front wheels and drivers side back wheel. If you hit a pothole your gonna purchase new wheels. I am a single mom my kids ride in this car. Many others have "complained" do something before you are scrapping children off the expressway.....these wheels on the 2002 eclipse are dangerous and expensive to keep replacing i can not afford it,,

Front driver side wheel was cracked. My tire would slowly deflate so i purchased a new tire thinking this was the problem. The next couple of days, my tire continued to loose air. So i went back to tire company and they informed me that is was not the tire but a crack in the rim. So i purchased a new wheel and now after a few months i have a bent rim. These wheels are very expensive and i cannot afford to continuepurchasing new wheels if this continues to happen. I would just purchased a whole new different set of wheels if i had the funds available, which i do not.
I hit a small hole in the road which caused my wheel to bend and it needs to be replaced. This will be the 3rd wheel i am replacing for the same reason. I was not driving erratically when this happened. I feel the car should have been able to sustain this ordinary road hazard. Also, the car/steering wheel vibrate at certain speeds. I have had the alignment done, tires replaced/balanced. Nothing helps this condition.
While traveling at 65 mph, the front passenger front wheel came completely off the rim.
Hit small pothole and right front alloy wheel deformed on my 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt.this is the third time i have had to replace one of these alloy wheels because of normal potholes.
While driving 30 mph consumerdrove into a pot hole which caused all four rims to bend.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to resolve the problem.when the rims bent the tires deflated.
On 2 separate occasions the front passenger side rim bent, causing the tire to lose air and deflate rapidly. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle ,and coasted it to a complete stop. The rim metal was flimsy and bend very easily. A stronger metal was needed.both rims were pounded out using homemade tool. Consumer did not replace rims because mitsubishi has not changed to a harder material.
I just purchased a 2002 eclipse from a small dealer. Before i had purchased the car, they put 2 brand new tires on the front. The night i picked up the car, i had to travel on a few highways to get home. As i was getting back on the highway, i traveled over a rough spot in the road, but i only felt the left side going over it. A little while went by and as i was driving on the highway, i noticed that the steering wheel was pulling to one side. I knew something wasn't right because i specifically remembered how straight the steering was when i picked up the car 25 min earlier. The wheel started vibrating and i slowed up, and looked for a service area , when i pulled off i looked at the drivers side tire and saw it was flat.... Then i went to check the other front and it was flat too!!!these were definitely brand new. I could understand the left tire going flat because i went down in the dip, but not the passenger side.. How could 2 brand new tires go flat at the same time?? i didn't know what to do so i called 911, a police man came out and he had a tow truck come out and fill up the tires. I then followed him to their garage. The tires held the air, but i was not convinced they would hold. So the dealer towed the car back to their shop the next morning and thoroughly checked it over. They drove 50 miles on the highway. The tires were fine... They didn't know what caused the flat tires. And still don't! so after reading the other mitsubishi reports with similar incidents and even blowouts i'm convinced that this car has defective rims and that they must bend causing them to deflate the tires. To prevent this from happening again,i am purchasing after market rims to be sure i am safe! the rims are stock rims made by mitsubishi! doesn't mitsubishi care about safety??? someone needs to research these reports, recall these rims or replace them before someone gets killed!!!!
While driving 30 mph, the vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection.the mechanic informed the consumer that the rear right and front right rims needed to be replaced.the front right rim was cracked and bent and the rear right was bent. Please provide further details.
Repeated rim damage that results in flat tires due the inferior rims on the 2002 mitsubishi eclipsei have asked mitsubishi about the rims and they say there is not a problem.i have seen read of a class action suit specifically as a result of problems with the rims.
Duringcold weather the rims are causing the front/rear tires to lose air. Investigation ea02a007.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Eclipse gt, left rear tire blewout from rim and rim bent.consumer feels that these rims should not bend from a blowout.
I almost lost control of the car when the rim bent and expelled all air out of the tire, but at 35 mph i was able to maintain control, this can be a serious hazard, and if injury or even death occurs to any one, lawsuits will most likely be in order.*nlm***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis*761599
Front passenger side rim cracked.consumer was concerned that the wheel would come off while driving.
Under normal driving conditions, i hit a small pothole while changing lanes while heading to the mitsubishi dealership (where i used to work) and lost control of my 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt.upon changing my tire, my rim was bent so severely that i had a hard time getting the lug nuts off of the vehicle.over 2 inches the rim dented in.now, 2 weeks later, i noticed a problem in the front left end, that rim is dented severly in two places, not just one.i am going to have to replace that rim as well.to top everthing off, i also had to replace my tire because the first time i blew out the sidewall.this is over $1,000 in just wheel and tire damage.also, during employment at the mitsubishi dealership, i reported defect's with my wheels and it was not brought to the attention of the district service manager, bob desimone.i requested that they be replaced due to peeling paint and small rust marks on all 4 rims.i will be filing a report with mitsubishi motors of north america today.i am 28 and have bought 3 new mitsubishi's.at this point, never again.
Cracked rim.
Wheel rims on 2002 mitsubishi eclipse gt have bent on two occasions and had to replace them. The rims bent under normal driving conditions. *nlm
Third time wheels have failed causing rapid deflation of tire and subsequentcontrol of the car. Tire sustains no damage, but lip on rim gets bent back releasing air. Rims are too soft, or the car needs a higher profile rim and tire. Damage always occurs on front wheels due to extra weight of engine, etc. On front end. At age 62, i've owned a number of cars with alloy wheels and caught a pothole or two, but never had a wheel failure.
While driving on normal condition at city speed front right tire blewout.six months previous to this incident, dealershipindicated to the consumerthe rim was bent but would not cause the tire to blowout.subsequently, on two different occasionstwo more rimsbent.each rim will cost $300.00 at consumer's expense.the dealer refused to replace any of the rims at their expense.
When driving over an imperfection in the road (about 1 1/2 inches in depth) the right rim bent.
Drove over pothole in road. This dented and created crack in rim, which led to a slow leak from wheel. Need a new wheel rim for replacement. A rim should not crack this easily.a certain amount of durability should be expected from parts of the car and this is plainly not acceptable.
