Failure of headlight harnesses on a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse. Both headlamps out on 9/12/06 after first finding was fixed. Lights would not come on until left side harness was wiggled.

One headlight went dim a month before they both went out entirely and simultaneously.upon inspection, discovered the plastic wiring terminal that connects to the headlight bulb had melted around the same wire on each connector.no fuses were blown and all the filaments were intact in the bulbs.suspect that arcing occurred in the defective wire causing the connector to melt.

Headlights on my 2001 mitsubishi eclipse keep going off when driving at night whether i hit a slight or major bump in the road. This is a brand new car with very little mileage- this is the 2nd time i have had the car die on me while i was driving. 1st time was also for electrical issue which took a week for the dealer to diagnose and to fix it. I spoke to dean whom is a service manager at skyline mitubishi in denver. He had 2 mechanics working on my car for most of the day on 6/20/01 he said there was so much electrical problems with the car that they were still baffled at some of the problems that they kept running into. This is the 2nd time my car died while driving it, luckily nobody got injured in both instances whic left me and my family stranded for hours before emergency roadside assistance finally came to assist which is very very disappointing. Especially either when its late at night or in 100 temperature which it was when the last time the car broke down on me, and i had a 6 month old infant whic h we had to locate shelteer to keep the infant cool from the extreme heat of the sun.. I am so concerned about this safety hazard reoccuring that i am going to continue to file a complaingt with as many agencies as possible, until there is some resolution. I (we) do not feel safe driving the mitsubishi anylonger i am going to ask the dealership to exchange my vehicle for a different brand of vehicle.

2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt was running fine for 4 years. On 9/9/06 i got in my car at about 9:00 pm and turned on the lights. As i was driving down the road, i realized that my headlights were not on. I quickly pulled over and checked them. Upon opening my hood, i noticed smoke coming from my headlights and after they cooled, i saw that the connector and wires were melted. I went to the dealer where i bought the car and he advised me that the were out of connectors because the original connectors were not strong enough to take the charge of the light bulb and many people were having the same problem of the connectors just melting off. Mitsubishi now sells a stronger connector for 12.95 each.

Loss of engine power or dies that locks the steering wheel after 10 to 20 minutes you could revive the engine againusually happen every day . Went to the dealer withservice bulletin that might affect on it but they say no problem on it and they void the service bulletin or try to.

We lease the vehicle from motor world, my son and myself have had accidents with the car that we feel are a direct result of the car not steering properly, or accelarating properly. I contacted mitsubishi motors of america as well as the dealer and my insurance company several times. The dealership had the car for 3 months supposedly fixing it and when i got it home i had it for a week and the whole car felt like it was falling apart. I took it back to them and it had a cracked motor mount and they supposedly fixed that. I have the car back for 2 wks now and it is making all kinds of noises and it has to go back to the dealers again for the 5th time. There is something radically wrong with that car and that is why we had the accidents. I contacted mitsubishi motors of america and i told them about a recall my state farm insurance said they got from you for the steering box which could cause the car not to turn to the left which is exactly what happened to my son amd myself, had we been on a hifhway we would have been killed.mitsubishiwas supposed to send someone to look at the car while it was still at the body shop but they never did. Now the car is making all kinds of noises again and noone will help me. I'm afraid my son will be hurt in that car or i will.it's a 2001 car and it feels like it's 10 years old. Now i'm taking it to another dealership in allentown pa. To see if they can at least make it safe for me to drive. When i originally called mitsubishi motors of america they said the dealership had to give me a diagnosis as to why we had the accident ,noone ever gave me a diagnosis any of the 3 times. They pretty much told me to go to hell this morning over the phone. I told them i'd have to get a lawyer and they told me to go ahead. I tried ti trade up for a 2002 just to feel safe but mitsubishi motors of america wouldn't approve my credit for the newer car lease .ihave lots more to tell if someone calls me. Thank-you

We purchased a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse from carmax in charlotte, nc in august of 2003.the car had 19k miles.after driving less the 100 miles the service engine light came on.we had the car serviced by carmax 4 differnt times, they replaced 2 o2 sensors.after the 4th service they referred us to a mitsubishi dealer.that dealer also replaced at least two o2 sensors.the service engine light kept coming on about every 50 -60 miles.we tried two other mitsubishi dealers for a total of 11 service visits over a 12 month period.one dealer change the engine control computer and an o2 sensor.the proble reappeared after about 100 miles.during this time i repeatedly called the mitsubishi customer service center without getting any assisatance.i also contacted the southeastern sales manager david sullivan who was a total waste.the car has never been fixed and i feel i was defrauded by both carmax and mitsubishi.

1 had crash about four mounths ago.2 a/c blown a peice of metal from sidepulle locked up and belt broke loss of power stirring almost hit another car.3 nothing was or has been done to correct this old parts still available.

There is a foul odor coming thru the vents when her heat is on.vehicle hasbeen taken the vehicle to the dealer 3 times and they can not find out where the smell is coming from. Ph

Wiring harness female socket for the headlamps over heated and melted.the passenger side female socket melted about one year ago to a point where it would not provide headlight illumination.before the complete failure, the headlight would either be fully bright, or very dim.the mileage on the vehicle at that time was around 60k.i also noticed that the driver side female socket also had melted some during this time.in jan. Of this year, with approx. 70k miles on the vehicle, the driver's side headlight failed completely with the full melting of the female socket.a few days prior to complete failure, a burning odor is noticed in the passenger compartment.i have both pieces avail to send if need be.this is a serious issue because a complete failure of both female sockets at the same time is possible.this could cause someone driving to go from having two headlamps to none within seconds.if that occurred at night, it might cause a serious accident.

I have a 2001 eclipse gt, and i have been having problems with the headlights going on and off until one day they just stopped working. It kept smelling like something was burning and it had been the headlight harnesses. The dealership i purchased the vehicle from closed down so i brought it to key mitsubishi of milford and they said that the headlight harnesses melted.they in turn told me that it would cost close to $300.00 to fix. I didn't do anything to make the wires melt and it should be mitsubishi's responsibility to fix the problem. They said that i should take it to crabtree in milford and see if they would do it. They did not want to cover the defect either. I have no headlights on the car and this causes a huge safety risk. I need to know what i have to do in order to get the manufacturer to fix this defect. This is mitsubishi's fault and mistake. Many other people have had the same problem and it is not something cheap to fix. I am currently using a relatives loner car to get around because i have no way to pay for this. Please advise on what to do.thanks

Headlights began to go out, but moving wire connection on back of headlamps would correct the problem momentarily.problem occurred more and more frequently, and one headlamp stopped functioning altogether, while waiting several days for service appointment at dealer.dealer determined that wiring connections to headlamps had melted, and the wiring had to be replaced.

Failure of headlight harnesses on a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse. Both headlamps out on 9/12/06 after first finding was fixed. Lights would not come on until left side harness was wiggled.

On a 2 occassions, on my 2001 eclipse, the headlight connectors on both sides were melted from some kind of arcing.also the fuel door broke and was rusted considerably from just normal wear and tear.

There was a burning smell in my car and the headlights went out, but they would come back on after awhile. Eventually they both went out, and would not come back on. I am getting this repaired at a mitsubishi dealership. They told me that this happens very often with eclipses, and that they would have to replace the sockets.

I have a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse.about 6 months ago i had the passenger side headlight go out.the fault was a melted connector attached to the lamp.i fixed it by soldering a wire in its place.4 months months later the other headlight had the same problem.i'm writing this because i saw a complaint for the same issue and figured i'd give my two cents as well.i am actually looking for brake problems because the brakes on the car have been replaced twice and they still don't work very well.

I was driving down the road when i smelt something burning, then my headlight went out and i thought the bulb just went out, when actually it had melt the connection unit for my headlight. I have also had rim and sunroof problems. My sunroof has been to mishibushi three times and still doesn't work right!!!

The service engine light was on and the codes show an evaporative emissions leak. Several service visits did not resolve the problem. Finally it was found that the fuel filler tube was totally rusted out and close to falling off. Apparently this is a fairly common problem with the 2001 eclipse and was causing fule leakage as well as vapor leakage. This could have caused a fire or resulted in the vehicle being disabled. The mechanic said he had never seen a fuel filler tube in such bad shape. Mitsubishi dealer stated they didnt want to deal with the issue due to the high repair cost.

Engine is missing. Gas is not circulating throughout engine. Engine check light illuminates on and off.dealer can't find cause.consumer adds engine not producing enough power.also experiencing poor gas mileage.

I had to replace a rotted gas filler neck on my 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt. The mechanic told me it was a poorly designed part and should not have rotted. I have had many cars and never heard of anything like this before. Mitsubishi should be made to have a recall for this defective part.

Was driving home from work and came to a stop. Tried to shift into 1st and could not do so.had to turn off my car to shift into gear to avoid grinding.had a hard time going from 1st to 2nd as well.once arriving home could not shift into reverse.seems like the gears were trying to strip and a horrible grinding was occurring.i have been driving a stick shift for almost 30 years and this is the first time i have ever had this problem.had to turn off my car to shift into reverse to get into my driveway to park.tried the next day to drive my car...did the warm up due to cold weather, and again could not shift into any gears while my car was running.as soon as i turn the ignition off i could shift just fine. I've researched to try and figure out the problem and each solution equates to paying a lot for repairs.i'm upset because i cannot afford a new car at this time and i need a reliable vehicle for my job.seems this is a problem with this particular year the eclipse was manufactored, and nothing is being done.a definite recall is needed for this well-known problem.

Vehicle has been tested a number of times; dealership was unable to duplicate the problem.vehicle stalls when shifting from park to reverse; in may, vehicle began to kill without warning while driving between 40 and 65 mph.i was nearly rear-ended on one occasion when the car stalled on the interstate highway.i finally took the car to a different mitsubishi dealership in libertyville, illinois.in mid-july, they stated that a flash/recall was being developed and would be ready in mid-august; they informed me that i needed to pick up my car.due to the safety issues regarding this car, i refused to accept the car.they said that i would be charged for storage of the car and for all rental car costs.i filed a complaint with mitsubishi motors headquarters, and they promptly sent a factory representative to assess the situation.ultimately, a fuel pump was replaced; however, i was told to return the car in mid-august when the recall software is finally developed.

My calapana black 2001 eclipse gt started to fade a year ago. I noticed that most black mitsubishi cars starts to fade in 2-3 years. I have a couple of friends that have the same problem but refuse to complain here because they already done several times to the dealer but never had a response. I also have exact problem as complain no. Odi id: 100511429 nhtsa complaint id: 448638. As mentioned, the car has trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd gear (worst when cold), stutters when first accelerating, and makes a continuous rattling noise when the clutch is not engaged. I complained to mitsubishi dealer many times but they refuse to be responsible.

Six months after i bought my used 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gs i noticed it was sometimes hesitant to shift into second gear.i placed gear oil in my manual transmission that a certified mitsubishi mechanic said would be okay.for two to four weeks it was fine.as i was driving to work, i am stopped a at red-light.when i proceed to go on green i attempt to shift from 1st to 2nd at about 3500-4000 r.p.m., i am unable to engage 2nd gear and have to shift immediately to 3rd.i have contacted my local mitsubishi dealer service department and have been told that it is a bad synchro.i have no warranty and have to pay the full cost of repair.

I have a 2001 eclipse gt (v6) and i have had to change the transmission twice already. I live in minot nd were it snows. The first time my transmission jacked on me i was stopped at a light. Their was snow on the ground so when the light changed to green my tires slid a like and the grab the payment as that happened i heard a big thump. My car felt like an axle mess up or the clutch.the car behind me almost hit me do to the lack of movement from my vehicle. I was not that for from me house so i drove it home but one block a way my tranny ended up blowing a hole in the bottom of the case. The hole size was about the size of a soft ball. My speed was about 15 mph. So get home and i check it out. I find gears all shattered inside and what ever had fallen out. So now i buy a used tranny with some 65000 miles on it, i have had that one for a bout one year with putting 7000 miles on the tranny. Again there is snow on the ground. I am getting off of work and there is snow on my tires. The many road is cleared of snow so i drive out of the parking lot and my tires spin as i hit the pavement and the same thing happens. The tranny slips in gear so i got itto the shop and come to find out that the differential had shattered the spider gears. I have spent 3000 dollars on two trannies with in one year span.

Thank-you

When the consumer made a turn it was difficult to steer.the steering wheel locked and the vehicle had run off of the road into a ditch.recall# 00v225001 *sc

Dt: the problem began in may. While it was raining and the owner was trying to make a left turn, the steering wheel tightened up. The owner had to stop the car and turn the wheel really hard to turn. It felt like the car didnot have power steering. The problem happened mostly in the rain. The owner took the car to the dealership, and they will repair it, but it will cost the owner. There was recall00v225000 butthe owner'svehicle wasnot included. The owner contacted mittsubishi, but they won't do anything since there is norecall on this car. The owner will have it repaired tomorrow.also, had problems with the windshield wipers. This began last month. The windshield wipers worked just fine until the owner shuts them off. The owner didn'tknow when the windshield wipers will actually shut off. There was a recallfor older models.

Rims were defective.consumer advised that rims bend very easily and adversely, affecting steering control while driving.

The car is a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse.there were no specific events leading to the failure, but the paint on the trunk and roof of the car has oxidized and appears to have dissolved. The car is outside of warranty, and we will need to have it repainted on our own.based upon my internet research it appears that this problem is widespread.

Cracked dashboard. No stress added to it. It just happened.

Dashboard becomes brittle, and cracks result--causing airbag on passenger side to be misaligned--this is on a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse rs, 2.4l-----the company refuses to fix it, i would like a new dashboard.

My 2001 mitsubishi eclipse has started cracking down the dash and is getting increasingly worse all the time.

Cracked dashboard. Many many many other people are having this same problem. (2000-2005)

Dash cracked in half (degradation). I found that this is happening to almost everybody with the mitsubishi eclipse (mine is a 2001).mitsubishi will not address this problem.this needs to be a recall.

My black 2001 eclipse gt paint is failing fast. Started as a small white smudge looking spot on the hood but has spread at a alarming speed to the entire hood and the roof and trunk. The paint in circular areas seems to just break down from inside. It's not cracking off but it's changing color from black to white like the sun is bleaching it out. Looks just like if you spilled bleach on blue jeans. It has spread from hood to roof to trunk in 4 months. I'm told it will have to be sanded down to bare metal to remove the failing paint before repainting.

I have a 2001 black eclipse gt...bought brand new in jan. 01.at 43,000 miles all top surface areas were showing signs of paint pulling from the primer...at 53,000 miles the roof was down to the metal...took me months to get mits. To handle.they only would paint the affected surfaces? then 20,000 the rest of the surfaces became affected.i took it to the dealer and said they were not covering these issues anymore??if it was established as a defect it should be covered.

The first week of buying the car i noticed a little scratch by the front drivers side tire. Then i started hearing little squeaking noises when i wasreversing coming from the same left tire. Then i noticed the rim was bent i brought it to the dealerthey said i was hitting curbs & road hazard. Months later the scratch at the bottom by the fog lightswas getting bigger and deep the tire kept losing air and those springing sound noises i still heard.make the long story short it is 2 years later the deep gashes from the left front tireis now all the wayaround the bottom of the fog lights almost reaching the midde.i went thru 2 tires no blow outs thank god 3 rims and one was a replacement the tire keeps leaking air there is nothing wrong with the right side of the car its all the left front. I spoke to the manufactuer of mitshubshi they are aware of this they said its not a safety issue .don't blowouts happen due to bent rims?they noticed its only happening in certain states that certain states road conditions are bad. All states have potholes but when you are driving 15 mph, hit a pothole ,& your rim bends causing your tire to leak air something wrong. These rims are constantly bending but on my car it s only the left side. Its unsafe, because when i hit a potlhole it makes a loud banging noise even my brake pedal shakes.if i knewall these complaints i would of never bought this car now iknow its not me but the way these cheap soft wheels were made something should be done about this its unsafe and the whole car shakes and steers to the left after hitting a pothole.i dont use my car alot mostly back and forth to work on a highway 15 miles one way. I am tired of purchasing rims at $300.00 i pay enough for this car and for the money i pay i should have decent rims that can stand driving over a 15-30 mile an hour pothole. I hadcars before thisnever had a dented rim .something should be done about this there are even complaints on jdpower's website.

Dt:something was happening inside the dashboardthat was causing fluid to drain inside the vehicle ondrivers side and the trunk. It had a smell.tookvehicle to the dealers twice, and said they repaired it,but it was doingit again. The dealer said it was a defectivehose.it fogged up the vehicle. Turned on the air conditioner, and the fumescauseda blackout.currently, they said it needed engine repair. Before the blackouttried take it back to dealerfor a third time, and they refused to fix it on the weekend. This started happening on june 15,2005.

The paint on my black 2001 mitsubishi eclipse began to delaminate in october of 2004.i have noticed this same problem with other black mitsubishi cars such as the galant but the eclipses exhibit this problem more frequently.it began as faded areas on the roof then spread to the hood, trunk, sail panels and now to the top rear quarter panels.it seems to be caused by sun damage as a result of insufficient ultraviolet inhibitors in the paint as applied from the factory as i have washed and maintained the paint on a regular basis.

No injuries:a blow out within a 2 yr period, front left tire flat 13 times, replaced that rim 3 times.drivers side door, left side of hood, left rear by trunk does not align properly to the right side. Already had a manufacturers defect in my left strut scratches by left tire started out small now are 5 inches wide.

The rear cargo lid is loose and is rattling, dealer found 2 clips broken.

I'm now forced to pay thousands to have it sanded down and repainted, but there's no alternative.

6 blowouts 4 rims all on the front drivers side there are scratches all along the drivers side by the tire.the drivers side door doesn't align. This has been happening since the 2nd day i financed the car.and i found out that my strut was blown which may of caused all the scratches. Dealership said it was my fault but i have a picture to proof those scratches were there the 2nd day i had the car. I just had another blowout this morning about a foot away from entering the highway.incident from 10/2001-to today.

Steering wheel shakes at seventy, dealer refused to fix the problem; doors leak and dealer refuses to fix as well; rims easily bend.

The hatchback was suppose to have had a handle to pull the hatchback down the owner 's manual shows that handle but my car had an enclosue inside the hatchback on the right side. My hand came out of the enclosure and the hatchback closed on my hand and fractured my third finger on my right hand.

1. Every time it rains there is a large accumulation of water leaking from front window/front vents every rainfall on front floor boards; 2. Every rainfall, soaks carpet floor boards through to bottom frame of car; 3. Many, many thick towels on front floor boards.

I've previously owned 2 eclipses w/ no problems, this one however has been nothing but a lemon.2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt v6.in addition to the clutch which had to be replaced 1 yr after warranty expired, i have had an abundance of problems w/ parts that should never need to be replaced, none have been covered by warranty.i have replaced every sway bar twice, the a/c failed, the antenna embedded in the rear window failed, one oxygen sensor, the middle rear brake light wiring broke, 2 catalytic convertersfailed.and the worst is i was going through a headlight a month only to discover that the headlights had actually melted the to the connectors on both sides!and now i may have an electrical faultor faulty valve in my a/c unit causing my heat to kick on when the a/c is turned on.

My 2001 mitsubishi eclipse's axle snapped when i was going over a speed bump at about 3 miles per hour. The control arm also broke on the front driver's side. It only had 135,000 miles at the time. I got it replaced and still makes a really bad grinding noise. I was wondering if there could be a recall on the axle or the control arm. If i was driving at a normal speed, i'm sure something alot worse would of happened.

The contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse.while the contact's daughter was driving 30 mph, the lower passenger side control arm failed, which caused the entire wheel assembly to separate from the vehicle.the vehicle landed onto the frame.the contact struck two parked vehicles and then slid into the third vehicle, which stopped the contact's vehicle because there was no braking ability after the assembly fell off.a police report was filed.the air bags failed to deploy and the vehicle was destroyed.the contact consulted the manufacturer and they stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle; therefore, they would offer no assistance.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were approximately 30,000.

Consumer states that the vehicle drifts to the left while driving, this problem has not yet been resolved.

Clunking sound in suspension while turning and reversing at minimal speeds.contacted manufacturer and rep test drove vehicle stating it was minor and that it is expected because new vehicles do not stay new forever.mitsubishi attempted repair 4 times and failed all.problem was diagnosed as bushings.replaced bushings twice.no resolution.

Not only do i have the aggrevation of bent rims and flat tires, and financial hardship on this, my left side of the car doesn't align to the right. Water leeks in on the left side. I already had a manufacuters defect in my strut on the left side.i have sctraches on the left side fom the car scrapping the ground when i make a right hand turn. I have 17 inch alluminum wheels on a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt. Under normal driving rims bend and tires loose air resulting in weaken tires and bloww out under norma driving conditions. Not safe. Must check tire pressure daily. Metal used is soft and allows space between ties and rims. Tires fail. One tire blew on highway due to sidewall failure potential safety problem to me and public. Rims are too soft.

Srs light has come on & off several times in the last 6000 miles the service department has replaced seats for the side airbags the light still comes on & off the car has recently been in a collision the front airbags did deploy before i picked up the car the shop manager said they have to change the duram? because the light was coming on & they had put the wrong one in for only front airbags? i still believe it's the same problem we had before the car was wrecked.the second complaint the wheels (rims) bend at every 2000 miles we even had a blow out at 10 miles an hour in town.

I have a defective paint job on my black 2001 mitsubishi eclipse.although garage kept, the paint is self-destructing and turning white on the roof, hood and back sides panels.also, leak in window of drivers side door that causes 3 inch puddles of rain to accumulate when the weather isbad.

Moldings have been replaced twice on each side. (left and right)last time the dealer cement glued them to the frame of the car only to fly off again. At highway speeds or with top down this is able to cause injury to myself or another vehicle. I have repeatedly contacted mitsubishi every time and to no avail. The problem still exists and will continue unless they find out why this defect exists. I have taken the car to the closest mitsubishi dealer located in brandon, florida.they have had the car on their lot since the last incident (july 6 or7th) i demanded they keep it until they could satisfactorily fix the problem so that i would not be causing injury to another passenger on the highway or to someone in my vehicle.april 9th first side flew off (right)4/11 service took off left side as it was also brokeend of april the left side was replaced right side on back order.6/20 right side part in and replaced and glued with cement glue.left side taken off and glued also as was broken again. 6/5 right side flew off again! 6/7 carleft at mitsubishi until fixed. I have a black 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt and the clear coat is fading and is turning the car white.i have found 7 pages of similar complaints on deadeclipse.com.my dealer refuses to repaint it because i am not the original owner even though a body shop has told me the car never got repainted.

2001 eclipse rs black paint job fading real bad it looks like i have a poke-a-dot car of white and black every panel on my car is fading, hood top side panels trunk is real bad and all others the vehicle is in nc and i know a lot of other people who drive the same car and its happened to them to, an 01 eclipse gs i think.

The 2000+ mitubishi eclipse the dash boards are having many problems with cracking. We want there to be a recall so we can get properly made dashes.

Also i found shattered glass under the rear seats, which appears to be rear windshield glass. My car always pulls to the right and my right side window does not close properly. I just wanted to know if this vehicle was in a major accident when i purchased it.dt

"takaya recall"2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt, 3.0lv6 automatic transmission. 16 years old, but only 157621 miles driving as usual when without any notice or warning, no longer having any power to wheels from transmission (engine still running normal as usual). Automatic transmission had complete total catastrophic failure due to a manufacturing defect of an internal part called wave cushion spring

Consumer has a problem with the cruise control on the vehicle.*jg

While engagingvehicle into drive it accelerated at 60 mph. As a result, vehicle jumped the curb and was airborne on the right side. Vehicle ended up landing in an embankment and crashing into a brick wall. No report of air bag deployment.driver and passenger sustained neck and back injuries.

While driving at 55 mph consumer put the vehicle incruise control.when cruise control was engagedvehicle revved, and picked up speed. Consumer checked the vehicle, and found that the cruise control vacuum pump hose was the problem. Dealer examined the vehicle and came to the same conclusion.

While driving 65 mphmolding around windshield came off. All that remained of molding was around the edge on the driver side. Consumer slowly drove to dealer who replaced molding.

3 inch thick fog developsand continously moves up on inside of windshield when turning on defroster, causing a distraction to driver. Consumer took vehicle to dealer twice for this defect, but could not correct defect.

Rear window defroster detached in september of 2000. At this time defroster has detached again.

The rear defroster fell off into the vehicle.took vehicleto dealer, and rear window exploded, sendingglass into the passenger compartment.

Rear window shattered in convertable top at 15 mph after normal acceleoration from 0 mph.we were stopped at a traffic light for several minutes with no other vehicles or persons present to either side or rear of vehicle.we were in a small line of traffic, 4 passenger cars from our position to the traffic light.other problems noted by mitsubishi dealership before rear window glass failure are excessive movement/popping of rear glass at speeds of 50+ mph.pulling/stretch marks in fabric of top around rear window glass, fabric had begun to "shrink" upwards on the passenger and drivers side of top above front windows exposing interior of top.upon inspection of the items by mitsubishi dealer they considered all of the above items normal wear on convertable top.mitsubishi denied warranty claim saying that "window glass does not just break on it's own". While sitting in parking lot rear window broke into millions of pieces. Mr

After opening both front windows they would close with a white film on them. Consumer could notsee out window. This is a mitsubishi eclipse 2001. This car has had several problems for the first 2 years. #1. Clutch fluid completly leaked out. Clutch slave cylinder was replaced.#2. Master brake cyliinder was leaking and replaced. #3. Pcm chip replaced. #4. Window mouldings for front and back winshields have come off.

Not only do i have the aggrevation of bent rims and flat tires, and financial hardship on this, my left side of the car doesn't align to the right. Water leeks in on the left side. Sometimes the heater blows out cool air. The sunroof shakes when opening. I already had a manufacuters defect in my strut on the left side.i have sctraches on the left side fom the car scrapping the ground when i make a right hand turn. I had to have the cooling system replaced the first week i financed it.my hood won't open and my headlights fail causing me to dirve only with the fog lights.all these issues are the same and constant since i purchased this lemon.

The driver was following a dump truck while driving 40 mph. The dump truck started losing rocks from the back of the vehicle. The driver tried to avoid the rocks, however, a rock hit the sunroof of the consumer's vehicle.as a result, the sunroof glass broke causing the glass to enter the vehicle. The consumer states that, "this is the second time the sunroof glass has broken."please provide any further details.

Consumer states that the sunroof judders, dealer ordered sunroof rails.

Consumer states thewindshield wipers fail intermittently.nlm

Consumer states while he was cleaning his vehicle he noticed that the wheels were bent, after taking them to the dealer he was told that they could not repair them because they were not under warranty.the wheel are still driveable.nlm

I've experienced five bent wheels under separate, ordinary street driving conditions.wheels are made of very soft, easily bent metal.no tire damage has been experienced.

The vehicles front passenger side wheel bent.dealer notified.*nlm

Rims dent and crack when hitting potholes at low speeds. Slow air leaks reported also.

While driving consumer noticed vibration coming from the rear. Consumer drove the vehicle todealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the passenger's side wheel was bent and needed to be replaced.

Rims dent and crack when hitting potholes at low speeds. Slow air leaks reported also.(tiresize: 205/55/16)

Odi action number pe01-044, alloy wheel denting. Two wheels are dented.

While trying to avoid a spin out in heavy snow. I turned to into the curb to help stop my car. My wheel is aluminumspoke design. All the spokes fractured completely out of the wheel. The tire still had air. My wheel came off. My rotor hit the ground and busted. My dad who is a mechanic came out before the tow truck took my car off and he said he never seen anything like it. The same comment came from the tow truck driver and the service manager at mitsubishi. My car is low and the only body damage was from when the wheel dropped off added to when the tow truck lifted my front end. I was already in antilock mode and not going very fast in heavy snow conditions. At the most i should only have gotten a flat or bent rim.

While accelerating on an on ramp to get onto interstate 84 in connecticut, i hit a small pothole in the road and it majorly bent the wheel and caused the tire to come off of the wheel.this happened in the night and on a stretch of the highway that had no shoulder.i had to drive approximately a mile on this blown out tire and wheel to the next exit.the failure of this wheel cost me $350 (for the wheel) and another $150 (for the tire) plus labor charges.no mention of the problems with these wheels was mentioned when i took it to the dealer.

Wheel is dented. Sunroof is skipping and chattering. (tiresize: 205/17/55)

My experience, online testimonials and news regarding mitsubishi eclipse alloy wheels' faulty construction convinced me that my suspicions were confirmed.although odi claims all damage is cosmetic, i suspect they've never taken a 2001 eclipse for an extended spin.

Two of my mitsubishi eclipse (2001) 17" six-spoke rims bent, one to the point of failure, when i contacted a pot-hole at low speed.

Rim bent easily after hitting pothole.

I was driving down the road two separate times now when i have hit potholes that resulted in a bend in my rim. The first time all the air was let out due to it breaking the seal on the tire. I was left stranded for several hours before help arrived to help me in the middle of the winter. The second time was about a week ago when i hit a pothole and now the air slowly leaks out everyday and before i can go anywhere i must reair my tire. I bought a replacement rim the first time since they said it was unrepairable. This time i am filing a complaint with my city since it is the same pothole again that they didn't correctly fix the first time. I will have to purchase a new rim again since they say it can't be fixed since they are allunium rims. I have the 6 spoke rim that came standard on the 2001 eclipse.

My wheel bent when i hit a small pot hole while traveling at 35mph. The tire will no linger hold air.

The factory rims that came with the vehicle upon purchase are described by the owner as "butter".aluminum is too soft to handle normal road driving conditions.the rims bent and two of the tires had blowouts.please describe details.*mr

I have a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse and have lost all the original rims todents fromnormal road driving--i had to replace all 4 rims because they we so warped they wouldn't hold a seal on the tire--that's $850.00!!!! on a new car!

I leased a 2001 mitsbuishi eclipse.within the first two years of the lease, i have had to replaced all four rims on the car.i contacted family auto mitsubishi here in indianapolis where i leased the car and asked them to replace the rims with ones from a newer model because of the excessive problems i had.i was told that they were not faulty, that they were damaged by excessive road wear.i contacted the bbb they contacted the dealership.all they did was send me a letter stating i should take the car into the dealership and see what they would do for me.they had already stated that they would not replace the rims.

Consumer took the vehicle into the dealership for inspection and was informed by the mechanic that all four rims were bent on the vehicle.the consumer stated that the vehicle had neither been driven off road nor hit any potholes. *la the rims bent during normal driving.the bends also affected the tires ( two tire failures) and the steering. *sc

The rims on my car are peeling. Because of the peeling they are now rusting. I am trying to sell the car but now i have to replace all the rims because these ones looks horrible. I have talked to other people with 2001 eclipses that have done the same thing.

While driving 20 mph andwithout warning all four rimshave dented. Manufacturer has been notified about problem, and customer service representative stated consumer was at fault.

At 4,000 miles rims began collapsing, not retaining air, bent easy.these are manufactured rims that came with vehicle upon purchase.please describe details.

While driving 30 mph consumer lost the control of the vehicle. Consumer stated that passenger wheel rim was bent. Consumer found on the web page many consumers having the same problem. The wheels were made of very soft easily bent metal.

While going onto an interstate (i 495 north) from the ramp, my car stepped into a pothole which was not really deep only at around 50 miles. The front left wheel rim was fractured and bent and the rear rim was bent slightly too. The tire deflated immediately but did not burst open. Fortunately since there was not much traffic there was no crash, but it could easily have been fatal, especially since the car is a front wheel drive and the wheel was really bent out of shape. Dealer said that problem is due to road hazard and not vehicle defect, however i have found 5 other complaints on this website of the exact same nature.

Ea 02- 007/aluminum alloy wheel denting: consumer was concerned that the original rims weredenting prematurely when driving over pot holes. Dealer was notified.

I was driving my 2001 mitsubishi eclipse equipped with 17 inch alloy wheels, going about 30 miles per hour, when i heard a loud bang from the right front area.it was after dark and the car seemed to handle okay so i proceeded on but after a short distance i heard a similar bang.i pulled over and found that the right front wheel rim was greatly deformed and the tire knocked off the bead.i changed the tire and proceeded home without further incident.i inspected the road the following day in another vehicle and drove over the same rough spots and barely noticed them.there were no signifigant pot holes in the road.i believe that a wheel that will fail so easily is a hazard.if i had been traveling at highway speeds and struck a hole in the road i believe the tire would have gone flat immediately and control of the vehicle would have been lost.

I noticed a very large dent in my wheel while washing my car. I have never hit anything before & i was wondering why such a large dent in my rim would have occurred with no damage to my tire. However, my rim is dented in such a way that my tire barely holds the air in it. I am very afraid to drive my car on the highway for fear that my tire will explode off of my wheel. I can't understand how a heavy, metal rim could have bent so far & not punctured my tire. What can be done about this problem? this is virtually a brand new car for me & i am the only driver. I see no reason to pay all of this money for something that is not at all safe to drive.

At 5,000 miles, the manufactured rims began to collapse, causing one of the rims to bend, and causing the tire to blowout.the consumer was driving when she heard a loud bang and the vehicle was pulling to the right.the consumer found that the tire was completely flat and that the rim was deformed.*scc

Driving home at approximatly 9:00pm est going 40 mph on route 611 north around warrington, pa in the rain.heard a loud bang from the passenger front side of the car (really loud).i assume that i had hit a pot hole and was not immedialty concerned until i heard a weird flapping noise. I pulled into a safe location to check out the tire and wheel and the wheel was heavily dented.the tire had lost all air, but was not torn up.after putting on the spare i checked the wheel using a flashlight and noticed that the wheel was cracked.i will need to replace the 17" alloy wheel at cost of $350.i have had other alloy wheels that have stood up to pot holes before.i have read all previous complaints, as well as, the report finalization by nhtsa.i am lucky that in the rain i didn't lose control of the vehicle and be part of/cause an accident.i am a little concerned as to the structure and security of these rims for the future.if this happend at a speed of about 40 mph, what would have been the ramifications at 55/60mph on a highway?currently, i still have the cracked wheel in my possession.i am planning to purchase another wheel tomorrow march 12, 2005.

I've experienced five different bent rims in 20,000 miles!not safe!.

While driving all four rims bent without being hit.it was caused by material that rims were made, being so flimsy.common problem. Dealer contacted.

I was driving in a snow covered road when i hit a pothole i could not see.the rim bent and the tire went flat immediately.i've hit much larger potholes in the past in other cars i've owned and never had this happen.

While driving, if vehicle hits a pothole it will bend the rims.contacted dealer.all four rims bent.the day consumer purchased vehicle one of the rims were bent so bad that it had to be replaced.the dealer offered no solution and couldn't explain why they wouldn't stop recommending rims that have a known problem.*jg

Bent four original wheels and bought a replacment that also got bent.

Consumer stated the alloy rims are made of extremely soft metal that bends easily which occurs during ordinary driving conditions and are a safety hazard.the dealer refused to replace the defective rims.scc

While changing the right rear tire the consumer noticed a crack in the rim, dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.

I have had two rims bend in the past two years from normal driving in northwest indiana.

While driving over a pothole, tire went flat and rim bent, the exact same thing happened that night, manufacturer knows that rims are too soft for the tires, they are bending and causing flat tires, manufacturer would not help consumer.

2001 mitsubishi eclipse gs, rims have either a stress fracture or bent under normal driving conditions. There type of rims are 16 inches, ten spoke and are the aluminimum alloy type. Trying to work with mitsubishi as they are refusing to fix problem.

I was traveling down rt. 135, coincidentally passing a mitsubishi dealership, around 7:15 in the evening.there was pretty heavy rainfall, so i made sure to stay around 25 miles/hr.as i passed the dealership i heard a thunderous boom from the right side of my car.i made it back to my house (which is less than a mile away).when i got out of my car, i found the front of my front right rim bent, and the inside of the rim was missing an 8 inch chunk of metal near the seal.i took it down to the dealership the next day only to hear them tell me that damage was normal in regular road conditions.the only option i was given was to buy a new rim (at about $350).this was even with the extended 100,000 mile warranty on the vehicle.

Rims are bent and crumbling, my tire continuously loses air/ accidents have been caused by this defect.

The wheel (rims) have chipped during normal usage. Clear coat looks to be warning off.

The front passenger side alloy rim on my 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt was bent and cracked from simply hitting a pothole in the road.this caused my tire to rapidly deflate and the rim unable to be used.*la

The first week of buying the car i noticed a little scratch by the front drivers side tire. Then i started hearing little squeaking noises when i wasreversing coming from the same left tire. I hadcars before thisnever had a dented rim .something should be done about this there are even complaints on jdpower's website.

The alloy rims designed for this car are extremely soft and are damaged very easily.they are also very expensive to replace.many owners are having problems with the wheels being damaged.i do understand that alloy wheels are more easily damaged than steel wheels, but this is ridiculous.also.....dealer did not advise alignment after repair, causing over $500 in tire damages a month later, and a blowout.i know nothing about wheels, it should not have been assumed that i understood the effects of the wheel damage without them being explained to me.

Steering wheel shakes at seventy, dealer refused to fix the problem; doors leak and dealer refuses to fix as well; rims easily bend.

Rims are too soft. When mounting a tire, the rims have dents and bends posing a road hazard.dealership is aware of problem.

- the contact has a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt.the contact has a complaint about the alloy wheels on the vehicle.the contact's vehicles tires were balanced on 1/15/07 at that point the contact was notified that one of the allow wheels was slightly bent and may cause air to leak and the tire to be damaged.the contact wants to make a formal complaint to mitsubishi in regards to this issue.there has been no tire failure to date. The consumer stated the rims are soft and they bend easily. Updated

Vehicle hit a pothole and front passenger's side rim bent.rims should not bend under normal wear and tear. Jlg

These rims are defective and are unsafe. Mitsubishi has know about this since it was deployed in 1998.

Rims were defective.consumer advised that rims bend very easily and adversely, affecting steering control while driving.

I am reporting two separate incidents, both involving the quality of the manufacturer's rims on the 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt. I have somehow managed to dent both the right front and right rear rim on my new 2001 mitsubishi eclipse gt within the first 6 months of driving (odometer read less than 3600 miles after the second incident). I previously owned a 1997 mitsubishi eclipse gst i purchased new without any rim issues and traded in after 45,000 miles for the new eclipse. The first incident occurred while making a right turn at a stop light driving less than 10 mph. I drove too close to a curb and my front tire hit a pothole. The tire instantly deflated, and there was no damage to the actual tire, however the rim was bent in at least 2-3 inches and had to be replaced. The dealer would not replace under warranty, so my cost for a new rim was around $300, and then the dealer stated that i had to go elsewhere to have tire and rim installed because their tire machine was broken! total cost of the first incident was approximately $320. The second incident occured only a couple of months later, but i am still not sure how or where the incident occured. The damage to the right rear rim is substantially less as i am still driving on this rim today. (the right rear rim is dented less than 1/4 inch and there was no effect on the tire or the steering.) neither my driving skills nor the driving conditions have changed since owning the previous eclipse to merit those reasons as factors for the faulty rims.

Bent rims.each rim on the vehicle has/was bent, possibly due to defect in the rim material.i avoid most potholes, so the bending was not caused by hitting large holes or large objects.the bend on the rim causes the air pressure to go down or a flat tire, which caused the vehicle to vear to the right or left.also the tires are wearing very fast do to loss of pressure.four new rims were purchased at the price of $1100, but the handling of the car has already been affected from the suspension to the brakes.

Vehicle was taken in to dealer on a routine oil change anddealer noticed tworims were bent.cause unknown.

A loud bang was heard as if running over a large object in the road.however inspection revealed the right front wheel rim had a large dent.the tire was not damaged but had been knocked off its bead due to the damage to the rim.

Iread the news story on the website for 7 on your side about the defectiveness of the metal alloy rims for the '1997 through 2001 mitsubishi eclipse rims and wanted to go on record with you as having problems with the same rims on my eclipse. Not only are they a cause of much headache and financial drain ion thier owners but also they are a safety hazard and this should be rectified.

I own a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse.i have 54000 miles on this car.on april 16, 2003, i had my third flat tire (2 of them have been blow outs).all three (as told by goodyear) were caused by bent rims.two of the bends were very noticeable and each occurred with regular driving.i feel like i am driving on a time bomb. Even with minor bends, air releases from the tire.i check my pressure every week, but still to no avail.from other complaints i have read, this is a major problem that mitsubishi appears to be ignoring.

2001 mitsubishi eclipse 17" rims - the rims are soft and bend easy.i had several incidents where i was left on the side of the road after hitting a pot hole as the rim had bent and created a flat tire.after owning the car for two years, i had to replace the rims as they were a hazard and creating driving problems.i bought off the shelf rims for half the cost of the mitsubishi rims and have not had a single problem since (2 years later).three of my four rims were in really bad shape from hitting the smallest of pot holes.when replacing tires, my mechanic would take the time to try and re-bend the rim to its original shape and mentioned to me that this was a common problem he saw on the mitsubishi eclipse model.

All four tires were vibrating as a result ofrims being bent.

My daughter hit a pot hole in her 2001 mitsubishi eclipse and the rim bent severely and the tire went flat.

On january 2003 while driving at 40 mph, the consumer hit a small pot hole.one half month later, the consumer experienced aflat tire on the passenger front side. The vehicle was taken to goodyear dealership to replace the tire.the dealership indicatedthe rim was cracked.

The driver side front rim bent, which caused the tire to lose air.

While driving 25 mph, the consumer's vehicle hit a pot hole and the passenger's side wheel bent. As result, there was damage to the tires. Consumer indicatedthe wheel rims were made of very soft easily bent metal.the consumer stated the remaining rims bent and had to be replaced.

Normal road conditions lead to my wheel rim cracking and requiring a new rim.this failure may have caused a severe accident if i was traveling at high speed, luckily i was only traveling at 25 mph when the failure occurred, leaving the car disabled.new rims are very costly with added repair costs ($686).further the spare tire does not fit the front of the car? how is this legal?

No injuries:a blow out within a 2 yr period, front left tire flat 13 times, replaced that rim 3 times.drivers side door, left side of hood, left rear by trunk does not align properly to the right side. Already had a manufacturers defect in my left strut scratches by left tire started out small now are 5 inches wide.

One front and one rear rim were replaced because they were bent. At this time the second rear rim is bent and has to be replaced.
