Consumer parked vehicle about 8pm thursday jun 12, 97; then awakened at 7am. On friday june 13, 97, noticed that the air bag had deployed on passenger's side and interior had burned. Dup of 813565, added on 25-feb-98.

I was getting on the freeway when i lost control of my vehicle out of no where, luckily i was in the middle of the on ramp and not in freeway traffic yet. My vehicle pulled toward the drive side, i quickly pulled e-brake turned my wheel opposite of traffic and braked. The car started fish tailing right to left because of the drive side pulling and me trying not to allow the car to spin out or go off the side of the on ramp. When the vehicle came to a stop i made sure my family and i were safe and no other vehicle were involved. Got out to the vehicle to find my drive side tire bent in my fender my axles in half and tire blown, i called for a tow and paid out of pocket for tow and parts plus repairs. I also have fuel pressure problems, srs light, secondary air injection malfunction. My fuel pressure relay is black, the smog technician said the vehicle has recall issues that need to be addressed.

The vehicle caught on fire while parked in a parking space at 2 am. The fire was an electrical fire and burnt the entire interior of the vehicle. The fire was extinguishedby the fire department. Consumer felt that the fire was due to a defect described in thefuel recall 96v158001. But this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Car dies while driving at various speeds. This needs to be a recall. This can be very dangerous and the dealerships have no idea what the problem is. Have had numerous things replaced and it has been in the shop more then four times for this same reason. I know the tow truck driver by name. It's a shame that this hasnt been a recall. I guess there needs to be more accidents first!!!
I have had to replace 3 brand new batteries which were still under warranty, because they were totally drained.i believe there is something wrong with the electrical system.there is nothing that i have done that should have caused the batteries to die.the blower on the air conditioner/heat doesn't work and the dealer states that they can't find anything wrong with it.the cover of the passenger side airbag is prying up from the dashboard.i have had the brakes replace 2 times all ready and now all the rotors are warped and need to be replaced.i think this vehicle make has very serious defects and after reviewing other consumers problems.i'm very glad that i plan to sell mine very shortly.

Since october 2001, my eclipse has been stalling without warning. Both the ``check engine'' and ``oil'' lights illuminate and i lose control of the vehicle as it slows to a stop. This has happened to me while driving 65 mph on the freeway. Each time, i've nearly been rear-ended. Several mechanics have run diagnostic checks on my car. But the problem has never been detected. Meanwhile, my car continues to cut out when least expected and regardless of speed. I wish this problem could be diagnosed as i see from other complaints that i'm not the only one driving a death trap.

After three visits to the dealer (sometimes by tow truck), they repeatedly indicated they could not duplicate the problem. On the fourth visit, the engine control unit was replaced. The car would shut down while driving at varying speeds with no prior warning. The problem reoccurred in november of 2000. The car is currently at the dealer where they once again claim they can not duplicate the problem. The engine oil gasket cover was replaced on 12/29/98. Subsequent complaints of an oil leak were dismissed as not causing the presenting problem or i was told there was no oil leak despite providing documentation from other repair establishments. However, after the warranty period, an oil leak was diagnosed on 9/19/00. These are serious safety concerns that must be addressed.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 25 mph the vehicle started smoking under the hood.it was pulled to the side of the road where the engine stalled.the fire department was called to the scene but no report was filed.they determined there was not a fire, but there was a leak of oil and antifreeze due to a busted hose.the vehicle was towed to the contacts home.although the dealer was alerted no other inspections were made.

Crankshaft walk. 1995 mits. Eclipse 2wd turbo. My son bought this car directly from having the bottom end rebuilt. Within 200 miles of drive time the crankshaft sensor went out. The mechanic that did the rebuild said he did not replace the sensor so no warranty. After spending another 160.00 on a new crankshaft sensor and interrupter plate. It lasted for approximately. Another 200 miles and died at 60 miles an hour on the freeway. It went back to the mechanic who replaced the crank bearings plate and sensor. It only took him 8 weeks. We picked up the car on thursday the 20th of march. This time it lasted 30 miles and the plate is again hitting the sensor. We have now paid almost 3000.00 and the car is back in the shop. I have read complaints from other consumers who have had the same problem. There is no reason that the crankshaft should be able to walk. And it is not fair that we have to pay for a problem that is obviously in the design. Not even the shop that was working on it was aware of this problem. This car is back in his shop for the third time. He is losing money as are we.

Hello..... I would like to alert you to a major problem reguarding all 1995-1999 mitsubish eclipse cars.all cars are prone to crank walk which will on average do $2,000to $6000 worth of damage to the engine, this is a technical service bullitan from mitsu... This is a large safety concern in my opinion, just like the recall on the transfercase.if crankwalk was to happen at highway speeds, local is 75, sudden shuttin off of the engine would cause power steering failure, not to mention a few other problems (abs would fail)...... This would without a doubt in my opinion, cause an extreme accident.please, don't just take my word for it ... Go to www.dsm.org and do a search for "crankwalk"go to www.roadraceengineering.com, and view their tech info on crank walk... This is a huge problem that is the direct resault of a defect from the manufacturer.this strikes all transmissions, all makes (turbo or not), talon or eclipse.please check this out.... This is happening to oem engines, modified, and dealer rebuilt engines... Please contact me reguarding this problem... I do hope that someone will research this.....i am not looking forward to having to rebuild an engine just because a crank and bareings were made out of spec at the dealer..... They also have no valid reason to blame mild modifications for these failurs when dealers have to deal with several of these a month (dealers have reported over 3 walking cranksafts in 3 different years of eclipse within 1 month!!!!!!!) -- this is a problem that the owners should not have to pay for, this is not standard ware.

Camshaft started making same noise at 97,000 miles as it did at 47,000 when it failed at 65 mph on the hwy.engine shut down and all power was lost.i am concerned that this will happen again in the near future and it is no longer covered by warranty.i belive that the life time of the part may only be aprox. 45,000 miles.the mechanic descibed the problem as the "cam shaft was walking".he also said that he had seen a few other cases.
(1) ticking noise from the crankshaft pulley area with the clutch depressed. Kind of a swooshing tickey noise. This is the crankshaft position sensor trigger plate rubbing on the crankshaft position sensor. (2) stalling when the clutch is depressed. The trigger plate and crankshaft have been moving so much that the trigger plate is wearing through the sensor.car lost power steering and put me and my family in danger.

Engine rod failed causing metal to go through the engine damaging it, a few months later while driving the engine began making a loud noise then the vehicle suddenly shut off resulting in loss of steering capability, it was determined that a rod cap disconnected and hit the oil pan, the consumer has replaced to engines in less than one year and feels these failures are not normal wear and tear.nlm

While driving at 65mph, the engine died.i luckily was safely able to pull to the side.my dealership thinks it is the control unit.it now starts, but the dealership recommends replacing this item to prevent it from happening again.i have noticed on message boards that this same difficulty has been experienced by other people with 1995 eclipses.it is a very dangerous (and expensive)condition which would not likely occur in other vehicles without a pre-existing problem with manufacturing.

Engine completely failed at 75000 miles. Records kept and maitained according to manufacturer. They would not replace it. I had to 1300+ to get it fixed. Now i have been told i need a new head gasket and i know it had been replaced 2 times since i have had it. I am having major problems with the brake system. I have had 2 new sets of rotors put on, rotors turned numerous times and it still shakes badly. Need to have them recall this problems, cause everyone i have talked to has the same problem.

Upon driving my vehicle 5/12/99 the drivebelt began shredding.5/13/99 the problem fixed with both belts being replaced.whiledriving on 5/14/99 a belt fell off, resulting both belts gone and loss of a/cas well as power steering.problem fixed again with mechanic suggesting that belts may not have fit properly and replaced with factory parts.5/25/99while driving i noticed a loss in power steering and a/c again i immediately inspected and saw the belts once again missing.frusterated i went the nearest dealership and asked what may be wrong with the car.the service advisor brought to my attention that there is a bulletin regarding that one of the pulleys on the drive system losses alignment and causes the belts to fall off.the remedy is to apply shimms to bringall pulleys in alignment at a cost of approximatley $200.00 for labor.why is this not a recall and what is a bulletin for if we are not informed till its more expensive. When driving and the belts fell off i lost my power steering too.

Upon driving my vehicle 5/12/99 the drivebelt began shredding.5/13/99 the problem fixed with both belts being replaced.whiledriving on 5/14/99 a belt fell off, resulting both belts gone and loss of a/cas well as power steering.problem fixed again with mechanic suggesting that belts may not have fit properly and replaced with factory parts.5/25/99while driving i noticed a loss in power steering and a/c again i immediately inspected and saw the belts once again missing.frusterated i went the nearest dealership and asked what may be wrong with the car.the service advisor brought to my attention that there is a bulletin regarding that one of the pulleys on the drive system losses alignment and causes the belts to fall off.the remedy is to apply shimms to bringall pulleys in alignment at a cost of approximatley $200.00 for labor.why is this not a recall and what is a bulletin for if we are not informed till its more expensive. I have had to replace 3 brand new batteries which were still under warranty, because they were totally drained.i believe there is something wrong with the electrical system.there is nothing that i have done that should have caused the batteries to die.the blower on the air conditioner/heat doesn't work and the dealer states that they can't find anything wrong with it.the cover of the passenger side airbag is prying up from the dashboard.i have had the brakes replace 2 times all ready and now all the rotors are warped and need to be replaced.i think this vehicle make has very serious defects and after reviewing other consumers problems.i'm very glad that i plan to sell mine very shortly.

There is a strong smell of gas fumes on the inside of my car. Aftersome research i found a recall (ref. Nhtsa campaign id # 96v158000 and 96v158001). After reading the recalls' information i removed my rear seat to expose the suspect areaand an almost unbearable amount of gas fumes was emitting from the fuel pump installation area.

For the past two days my car has been missing(the engine not idling as normal). I took it to a mechanic who check the engine. He said that the number 2 cylinder is not firing properly. He change the spark plugs and the problem is still persisting. He said that he switch the number 2 and 4 injectors and he discovered that the injectors are working but their seem to be a problem associated with the electronic aspect of the number 2 injector. I would like to find out how best to resolve this problem. Their is also a problem with the fuse box located uder hood. Some of the fuses are loose and their support is loose. The coding on the fuse box has been partialy erase. I really love my car and i need some assistance.dt

I was getting on the freeway when i lost control of my vehicle out of no where, luckily i was in the middle of the on ramp and not in freeway traffic yet. My vehicle pulled toward the drive side, i quickly pulled e-brake turned my wheel opposite of traffic and braked. The car started fish tailing right to left because of the drive side pulling and me trying not to allow the car to spin out or go off the side of the on ramp. When the vehicle came to a stop i made sure my family and i were safe and no other vehicle were involved. Got out to the vehicle to find my drive side tire bent in my fender my axles in half and tire blown, i called for a tow and paid out of pocket for tow and parts plus repairs. I also have fuel pressure problems, srs light, secondary air injection malfunction. My fuel pressure relay is black, the smog technician said the vehicle has recall issues that need to be addressed.

My '95 mitsubishi eclipse gsx at 50k(1/99) had a problem with the clutch and shortblock.well it was under warranty and was fixed.now i have 80k(8/22) and i'm having the exact same problem.i've spoken with the dealership and i was told by todd mason that it's a known problem with turbo eclipse's.mitsu only offered to pay for a new shortblock but left me to pay the labor which would be in the thousands.they said it's no longer under warranty.the problem i have is that 30k is not enough miles or time for the clutch and shortblock to break down again and it's the exact same problem.i feel it's a mitsu defect in design.i do not want to pay big buck every time this happens.if it's a known problem i say they should do a recall on it.help what do i do?how do i argue my point???everybody seems to agree with me, co-workers, dealership, mitsu customer service person.everybody but the dealer rep who has to authorize the work.i've kept the car in good condition and have had all my regularly scheduled maintance done.

I was driving my car today and out of nowhere all of my wheels lock up and i lose control of the car.luckily i stopped and didn't hit anything but it could have been much much worse if other cars would have been around.this problem was supposedly fixed several years ago but it obviously wasn't. The recall says that fluid leaks out of the transfer case and causes lock up, this is exactly what happened. There is a recall that never expires for this until it is fixed once. Since it shows as fixed the recall no longer shows as open for my vin, mitsubishi refuses to admit there is a problem. A transmission shop advised me that this fluid should never leak out once, so surely not twice in 84,000 miles. I went to the dealer and called mitsubishi directly and nobody cares that it could possibly happen again and someone could be hurt.i do not have the money to fix it and i have no choice but to refill it with fluid and drive it again. This is the second time it has happened in this car since we purchased it brand new in 1995. It also happened to me in my eagle talon tsi that is the same car as this and it was fixed under the recall so i know this issue well and all occurrences are identical. This is an extremely dangerous issue and i no longer feel comfortable riding in a mitsubishi if they are unwilling to admit when there is a problem. I believe my transfer case should be replaced since the issue obviously wasn't fixed correct the first time since the exact same thing happened again.

I have had to replace 3 brand new batteries which were still under warranty, because they were totally drained.i believe there is something wrong with the electrical system.there is nothing that i have done that should have caused the batteries to die.the blower on the air conditioner/heat doesn't work and the dealer states that they can't find anything wrong with it.the cover of the passenger side airbag is prying up from the dashboard.i have had the brakes replace 2 times all ready and now all the rotors are warped and need to be replaced.i think this vehicle make has very serious defects and after reviewing other consumers problems.i'm very glad that i plan to sell mine very shortly.

Engine completely failed at 75000 miles. Records kept and maitained according to manufacturer. They would not replace it. I had to 1300+ to get it fixed. Now i have been told i need a new head gasket and i know it had been replaced 2 times since i have had it. I am having major problems with the brake system. I have had 2 new sets of rotors put on, rotors turned numerous times and it still shakes badly. Need to have them recall this problems, cause everyone i have talked to has the same problem.

Upon driving my vehicle 5/12/99 the drivebelt began shredding.5/13/99 the problem fixed with both belts being replaced.whiledriving on 5/14/99 a belt fell off, resulting both belts gone and loss of a/cas well as power steering.problem fixed again with mechanic suggesting that belts may not have fit properly and replaced with factory parts.5/25/99while driving i noticed a loss in power steering and a/c again i immediately inspected and saw the belts once again missing.frusterated i went the nearest dealership and asked what may be wrong with the car.the service advisor brought to my attention that there is a bulletin regarding that one of the pulleys on the drive system losses alignment and causes the belts to fall off.the remedy is to apply shimms to bringall pulleys in alignment at a cost of approximatley $200.00 for labor.why is this not a recall and what is a bulletin for if we are not informed till its more expensive. When driving and the belts fell off i lost my power steering too.

Two months prior to my inquiry into this matter my drivers side door handle became detached with no excessive force involved.taken as a typical occurrence inquiry to the dealership was never made.however, 2 weeks ago the passenger side door handle became disconnected in the same manner.after phoning the dealership and mitsubishi hot line i was informed that this has been an on going problem, yet ther have been no recalls incurred. Driver's side door handle broke off on several occasions.this usally happened when the consumer was trying to open the car door.
On two occasions my driver's side door handle has broken off when opening the door. I've heard that this is an ongoing problem for the mitsubishi but there has never been anything done to correct this problem. If a recall or reimbursement isn't done, can't they at least make the handles better with some kind of metal reinforcement inside the handle structure instead of just making them out of a rigid plastic??

1995 mitsubishi eclipse. Both outside door handles have broken off just from everyday use. Drivers side when the car was three years old. The passenger side in november of 2007. If they decide to break at the same time you would be trapped inside your car in case of an accident. The replacement cost is about $200.00 per incident to include painting and installation. This seems to be a constant problem with the 1995 through 1999 eclipse.

After nearly six years of ownership, the skirts around the car are collapsing, the plastic pins holding them in place have deteriorated and i have lost the right hand passenger side skirt altogether. Mitshubishi refuses to replace it or fix the rest so that they won't fall either. I am facing having to purchase a full new set. This is not wear and tear as when the paint finally peels off, they should not have used poor equipment and i have noticed their newer versions no longer have the removable skirts.

On august 8, 2001, i took my eclipse to jerry's mitsubishi in baltimore, md to have the independent front control arm and lower ball joint repaired as a result of nhtsa recall 00v421001.according to the statement of work, the defective parts were replaced and repairs made according to the recall notice.on june 9, 2002, the right front ball joint/independent front control failed during a slow speed turn of less than 15 miles per hour.as a result of the failure, the car abruptly stopped.upon inspection, the right wheel had separated from the control arm and was jammed in the front wheel housing.at this point the car was inoperable.service was requested.the car was towed to apple auto, baltimore, md (410-488-8788).in conversations with dave, the auto technician at apple, it was determined that the ball joint had failed, the control arm had failed, and that the bearings would need to be replaced.there remains the possibility that the axle will need to be replaced, but that cannotbedone until the car is in a driveable condition.

Cap of driver's side rear strut tower failed. Car skidded because the spring and shock were released. Replacement parts were secured from dealer which advised this is a recurring problem with this car.
My son was in an accident due to the recall which we were never informed about. He was driving on a straight away for about 20 feet when he felt a pop like he got a flat tire and then he lost all control of his car which did a 180* spin and slif into bushes after hitting a small curb. His tire was sideways, when advised there was alot of damage i found out they had a recall on this make and vin# which we were never notified about and asked a mechanic if this could of caused his accident and was told most definately. My son missed hitting a tree by 24 inches. I want his car fixed and the insurance company taken care of for the deductible and to make sure he won't get a surcharge on his policy for a manufactureres defect which resulted in an accident. My son went to vermont last weekend and i can't bare the thought if this had happened on the highway.

Since october 2001, my eclipse has been stalling without warning. Both the ``check engine'' and ``oil'' lights illuminate and i lose control of the vehicle as it slows to a stop. This has happened to me while driving 65 mph on the freeway. Each time, i've nearly been rear-ended. Several mechanics have run diagnostic checks on my car. But the problem has never been detected. Meanwhile, my car continues to cut out when least expected and regardless of speed. I wish this problem could be diagnosed as i see from other complaints that i'm not the only one driving a death trap.

While driving 20 mph consumer applied the brakesand driver's side wheel collapsed. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pulled over.consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, andmechanicdetermined that wheel assemblyand other parts needed to be replaced.
While grand daughter was driving down the street she heard something popping,andright front wheel broke away fromvehicle. She wasleft hangingupside down, andreceivied some minor injuries.the air bags failed to deploy during the accident.the dealer did a diagnostic test on the vehicle but the customer never heard from the dealer since then.they could have defaulted.

Penske service center said all 4 rims bent when brought in for alignment - i do normal driving and have not hit any pot holes - dealer checked and said all 4 wheels were fine and within specs, after dealing with them for 3 weeks. 6 days after i got it back from them my left front tire blew out at 70mph on a busy highway. This was 6 days after they said everything was fine when they checked tires and rims. Dealer says that it could have been a nail in my tire, but there was no nail to be found? dealer has the car right now. Car still shimmies and the cause is soft alloys used in the manufacture of the rims. Rims bend very easily and is a major safety hazard. Check to see how many nhtsa consumer reports there are on mitsubishi rims. Way to many! why do you do nothing about it? have built website to inform the public at http://www.mitsubishicars.org- dealer and mitsubishi refuses to do anything about it. Research on the internet also shows many, many people having the same trouble. These wheels should be recalled. These are european wheels and they are not safe. Have the marking jll on them, the jll is like the dot symbol in the states. (tiresize: 205/75r16)
