The passenger seat air bag light came on one day when starting the car. I took it into a mini specialist and they said it was the indicator sensor in the seat. Other mini models have had the same problem and have been recalled. He quoted $600-700 to repair it. He could not guarantee the air bag would deploy in an accident. This seems like a no brainer.
The passenger airbag sensor has been on since the date posted. It would resolve on its own sometimes but not it never turns off, hindering my ability to see the speedometer. I have not shelled out the thousands to get it fixed because i am hoping bmw will recall for this apparently common problem
Passenger occupancy sensor is malfunctioning leading to the passenger airbag being disabled while in motion. A person sitting in the passenger seat triggers the airbag sensor warning and disabling of the airbag. While the person is sitting in the passenger seat, the warning can come on and off, and the error does not occur while the seat is unoccupied.the occupancy sensor mat needs to be replaced yet it is not available to be sold separately and requires replacing of the entire seat cushion (cost prohibitive) and is not covered under warranty. The 2012 mini cooper model is not covered by the mini recall for the same exact issue which has affected thousands of vehicles.
The passenger airbag warning safety light comes on and stays on when no-one or someone is sitting in the passenger seat with and without their seatbelt fastened. I searched online regarding this and found several other people experiencing the same issue. Since this is potentially a safety hazard to a passenger it must be recalled since multiple mini coopers are experiencing this error.
Mini cooper base model with 90k miles has seat belt and air bag warning lights illuminated. Warning lights started intermittently going on and off and now stay illuminated continously when ignition is on. No vehicle accidents or incidents to cause this problem.
The contact owns a 2012 mini cooper. The contact stated that the front driver side air bag abruptly deployed while driving 40 mph. The failure occurred without warning or impact. The contact suffered injuries to the neck, back, and arms, which required medical attention. A police report was not filed. Prior to the deployment, the air bag warning light illuminated. The dealer stated that it was safe to drive the vehicle with the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle and concluded that the front driver side air bag deployment was not caused by a manufacturer defect. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 43,000.
Warning lamp for "airbag system failed" illuminated one day while driving on a straight street "in town" approx 25mph. At first light went off if i buckled passenger seatbelt (even when seat was empty) now it won't go off even doing that... Also doesn't matter if driving at high or low speeds, road types, turning, stopping, parked, driving, passenger in rider's seat, no riding passenger, etc, it will illuminate (& i never place anything on my passenger seat). Took to a mechanic - he checked & provided code 9435. Stated airbags might not deploy when this warning lamp is illuminated. Said this is a common problem with mini coopers & is a safety issue that he thinks probably should be covered under a recall. Contacted mini dealership - said no recall for my vehicle. From what i have found there are almost 100,000 other minis that have had a recall for this same problem, however, they tell me my vehicle is not included in the recall - want to charge me minimally $65 just to re-diagnose the code, then labor & parts to fix! called mini customer service - told me no recall for my vehicle & they referred me here.
Both front wheel bearings failing at 23,000 miles... Ridiculous.
Passenger side airbag is randomly disabled (with warning light/tone) when my 63# dog is sitting in the seat. Cause is a faulty "passenger seat occupant mat" that others have reported will cost over $1500 to replace. This has happened numerous times but only while driving so can't really get a picture of the warning light safely.

Bought mini from carvana a january 2020 and have had too many problems. Car overheated on 48, had 2 new cylinders put in, 2 weeks later, due to many notable problems this car has had, all coolant leaked out and was quoted by mini dealership $9,000 to fix a problem that was caused by a recall not listed for my year
Rear brake light burnt and melted. It was repaired and now it melted and burnt again but has caused further damage requiring the whole taillight needing replacement.
Started car, red service icon on dash alternating with driver door open icon.this was a loss of interior lights, signal lights, brake lights, hazard lights, window up/down controls, and door lock functions. Car otherwise operated normally. This malfunction requires dealer only repair.
Purchased a certified pre-owned mini next 2012 clubman 6-speed with 6,498 miles on it 08/2013.* 10/14/2013 around 9k miles lost power on the highway and went into limp mode, maneuvered to side of highway and called roadside assistance. Towed car in to dealer who replaced 4 spark plugs said all was ok. * 10/17/2013 i pick the car up, get 3 miles from dealer on interstate and the car does it again so i maneuvered off the closest exit and called roadside assistance. Towed back into dealer and they kept car until 26th. They said the dme was bad and replaced it and 4 fuel injectors. * 10/30/2013 car did it again and i drove home in limp mode, car was shaking and sounded like a 1970 vw beetle, nearly died at every idle, rough, acceleration and i called roadside assistance and they had car towed from my driveway back to dealer. *11/5/2013 dealer still has car.
Vehicle was in motion on a highway and, after going over several pot holes, the engine temperature warning light came on. The engine power was reduced, and the engine failure light also appeared. This is when i pulled over into the off ramp, and the vehicle came to a sputtering stop. I placed the car in neutral and pushed it to the dirt side lane of the off ramp. I opened the hood, smelled something burning, and saw smoke coming from the engine. I could see burnt circuits, burnt plastic, and coolant leaking all over the engine and exposed wiring. Had it not been for immediately exiting onto the off ramp, the vehicle would have stopped in the middle of the highway without warning. I could have almost died because of the fire; this faulty engineering by bmw/mini has already taken the life of a driver in south korea. Bmw issued a recall of the 2012 mini cooper s roadster in south korea, but when i had the car towed to one of their service centers, the technicians were unaware of this manufacturing defect and stated that the repair parts are unavailable. I see that my vehicle has been recalled, but when i type in my vin, no recall is attached to my vehicle. Bmw/mini is taking no action; they are harming and killing drivers of its vehicles.

Car key stuck in slot and would not allow the vehicle to shift.after taking it in for repair to mini cooper, we were informed that moisture was found in a computer which is located under the beverage holder.yes, you read that right.a computer under the beverage holder and no moisture barrier, no protection over this component..now who does that?there is nothing in the owners manual to warn you of this nor is there any indication on the beverage holder itself that indicates there isa computer component below.how would a consumer know?honestly, who designs a car like this?of course there will be moisture... Its a beverage holder for pete sake!it was a $1200. Fix.had i known or been pre-warned somehow, i would not have used the darn thing or at least wrapped my drinks in a paper towel. Of all the places to put a computer, why would anyone place it under the beverage holder.i can only guess that mini cooper counts on this repair sometime in the life of the automobile. I feel they should be responsible for the cost of this repair.

The contact owns a 2012 mini cooper. While the vehicle was undergoing an oil change, the technician diagnosed that there was a leakage on the oil control valve. As a result, the technician stated that the oil control valve needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 10,800.
This car was maintained, by mini and bmw authorized mechanics and only had oem parts installed and followed management of vehicle as directed by manufacturer, throughout its history. It was always driven and kept in moderate weather conditions, no extreme heat, cold, wet, or speeds. Used almost daily for 30-60 minute commutes. Just after 100k miles, total engine failure was suddenly experienced on the freeway, due to combustion in two valves, damaging two cylinders and sudden leaking of the exhaust system under the hood. The manufacturer, bwm, has been shown evidence of malfunctioning of the four cylinder engine and will not show evidence of their grounds for why they will not take responsibility.
These 2012 mini cooper clubman are having the timing guides brake and sometimes ruin the engine. In my case i think i caught it on time, i called mini here locally and my warranty runs out this september 2017 or 100,000. But my car just hit 105,000, this is an issue that mini have had for quite a few years and i saw a recall up to 2011 but haven't seen anything for 2012 mini clubman. It's hard to believe that bmw/mini went with plastic guides instead of some other material that could withstood more beating, specially for this area. Thank you for any help, because i'm having to fork out any wheres between $1500'to $3000.00!to get this fixed. I was driving when i heard the noise and now it sits in my driveway.
While driving for about 30 minutes on the highway, my mini coopershut off completely, i was able to pull onto the shoulder and that is when smoke started coming from the engine, within 6 minutes my whole engine was engulfed in flames, car totaled. Insurence inspectors couldn't figure out a cause. One of the fire fighters said it looks like it started near the water pump. There are recalls on other models for this problem, but not mine. My mini hasn't been worked on since last year when i got new tires, i also keep up with every oil change.
Water pump failure. Began to notice small amount of liquid under car in april 2016, thought it was condensation from a/c. Leak worsened and called mini in june 2016 to check it out. Water pump failure on vehicle with 45,500 miles. Class action lawsuit settlement agreed in california in march waiting on final approval of terms due in november 2016. Bmw knows this is a defective part. Water pump failure from defective part could have catastrophic effects if automobile is in motion at any speed.
My mother who owns this 2012 mini cooper has suddenly now started having issues with her water pump leaking. I took it to the dealership and was treated with this rude employee by christopher guzman whom had a very unprofessional and no empathy.very short with responses and sarcasm.keep in mind my mother is elderly and knows nothing about cars. So i log into to your site and see there is a recall on water pumps but my mother's is not one of them.and guess what her warranty just expired march 2019. Go figure. So if something would have happened to my mother because of defective water pump. And how funny how my moms car was not a recall. I would qualify for that action lawsuit. How does a 2012 water pump just give up with very low mileage 24 000i would like to escalate this further and an explanation how this could have happened!! look at the milage!

The contact owns a 2012 mini cooper. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, the engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the turbo charger and the water pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000. The vin was not available.

Check engine light came on. Cause: heating fault code in diagnosis(thermostat activation). Thermostat, housing , and adapter replaced. Removed and replaced coolant, checked cooling system for leaks. 06/17/2015 check engine light has come on again, and after taking to dealership it appears to be the thermostat again.

The contact owned a 2012 mini cooper. While driving approximately 20 mph, the contact crashed into the preceding vehicle after it stopped without warning. The vehicle was merged into a parking lot, where the contact noticed some minor damage to the front of the vehicle and smoke appeared under the hood as a fire started. The fire department extinguished the fire. The vehicle was destroyed. There were no injuries. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000. The vin was not available.

Driving 45 mph on busy city four-lane road, i braked gradually in approach to red light, which is my normal braking style. Car did not come to a complete stop--brakes only worked to a point but did not completely stop car;simultaneously engine revved to very high rpm. I threw transmission into park and turned off ignition lest my car ram car ahead of me. Very frightening. At previous two lights i had noticed that brakes were acting funny, not bringing car to a complete stop but i had left plenty of braking distance and was able to let car roll to a stop, in spite of brakes not effecting a complete stop . At those two lights the runaway engine (high rpm) did not occur or i would have pulled over right then. However, engine revving to high rpm has also occurred occasionally when pulling into garage but i had not given this a lot of thought because i have quickly turned off ignition. Now i know it's very dangerous situation. Of course i am not driving it but am having it towed to dealer for repair. The car has beenserviced regularly at dealer and has24,239 miles on it. There has never been a necessity for repairs on this mini cooper clubman.
Temperature sensor in radiator hose leaking. Needs upper radiator hose, and thermostat with harness to correct. Discovered during a routine oil brakes etc inspection by the dealership. I was told there was a change in the harness and the new one has a "computer" and would cost $1450 to fix. This is an upper hose and i looked online and found the replacement harness has tow separate connectors, one for coolant temp sensor and the other for the coolant thermostat. I hd checked my fluids two days before on a cold engine and they were fine and water overflow was at the proper level. I checked my coolant overflow tank the day after visiting the dealership on a cold engine and the overflow tank was low... I added water... It has not gone down for several days. I have heard there is corrosion that happens and the thermostat may not employ and you can have an overheated engine.
The contact owns a 2012 mini cooper s. The contact stated that the turbo charger was not properly shielded and the hood did not have any insulation. As a result, the hood would become extremely hot. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who referred the contact to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 22.updated 03/14/12the consumer stated the dealer provided additional heat shields. However, it did not completely correct the problem. Updated 05/10/10
Brake light failed, bulb could not be removed from inside the vehicle.dealer said the complete assembly would need to be replaced.upon removing the assembly, the fixture was reviewed to find where excesive heat had melted the connection to the bulb (same ones used in bmws that melted the wiring harness back in 2003). I repaird the the assembly by soldering the sockets to the board such that it did not depend on a piece of plastic for pressure contact.it works, but when a bulb truely burns out, the assembly must be removed to change the bulb.
Rear brake light burnt and melted. It was repaired and now it melted and burnt again but has caused further damage requiring the whole taillight needing replacement.
My driver side brake light keeps melting. The plastic the the light build screws into is actually melting t the brake light bulb. I've paid mini to repair the damage and the same issues has surfaced. The driver's side brake light does not work at all.
The contact owns na 2012 mini cooper s countryman. The contact stated that while driving 65mph the vehicle stalled the engine light illuminated before the failure occurred. The contact was able to merge onto the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnose that the gas setting and fuel pump were defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 2,821.

Handbrake harness not routed as designed.from the picture you can see the harness not inside the clip. This makes the handbrake harness short from point to point. Which will lead to my rear passenger side brake always on. And also, it will cause a serious safety issue if i want to use my handbrake to stop my vehicle. The force applied on passenger side is way more than drive side ( it was installed correctly ) . And it may lead my passenger side handbrake wiring harness broken ( because of the incorrect routing ) i found it out when my brake light in on. My front brake still working for another 1100 miles while my rear brake sensor tell me i need to change my brake . We change the rear passenger brake and found out its difficult to clip the handbrake wiring harness to right hole. Then we track the wiring done. It's shocks me . The routing is 100% incorrect. You can see the correct handbrake hole is empty.
Electronic fuel pump failed twice within a year.manual transmission - clutch does not engage gears properly. Friction point is vague and unengaging. Gear slips. Requires exceedingly high rev. Counts/gas to engage in gear properly. Car stalls more than normal/often. Overall fuel injection/ecu mapping/clutch issues are evidently and repeats to be problem areas despite parts replacement and adjustment (ecu re-map). From the owner's experience, the car stopped accelerating on the freeway due to fuel pump failures (twice) thus creating road hazard for fellow drivers on the freeway at high speed as well as my own personal safety. Also, due to stalling issues off the line, entering freeway after meter-signal is also dangerous in multiple occasions creating potential threat to safety.manufacturer need to address broad issue of fuel system/powertrain/clutch before anyone gets serious hurt or injured to sudden immobility/stalls. In particular, the clutch in manual transmission is so bad that it does not fulfill the intended function of engaging gears.
2012 mini cooper countryman manual transmission. Live in a mountainous region in colorado. Noticed a peculiar smell coming from the car after being stuck in heavy traffic.had the car serviced and they said everything was good to go. Few days later when on vacation driving through nevada, the clutch completely gave out & left us stranded from 8:30 at night until 2:30 in the morning before the tow truck could get to us. Dealer verified that the clutch was inoperable and replaced the clutch disk, flywheel, and pressure plate under warranty.manager said this has been an issue they have seen a few times previously.now, 12,000 miles (41,000 total)and 6 months later, the same thing as happened. But now, mini is saying that it's "driver error" or "wear and tear" and not covered.dealer service manager still acknowledges that this is a problem for the region we live in. However, i am expected to come up with $3,000 to fix this plus keep paying a new car payment. I have driven manual transmission cars/trucks/motorcycles/sports cars for 35 years and never had a problem with a clutch going out on me before. This is my 3rd mini, and it will be the last i will ever own, i can't wait to get rid of it. Mini has had enough trouble with this that they changed the clutch in the 2013 models. Extremely upset with them as a company that they can't stand behind their product and fess up that they didn't put a clutch in a car that was appropriate to handle the weight of the vehicle.don't buy one unless you live in the flatlands and don't have to deal with traffic!
Mini cooper base model with 90k miles has seat belt and air bag warning lights illuminated. Warning lights started intermittently going on and off and now stay illuminated continously when ignition is on. No vehicle accidents or incidents to cause this problem.
Right and left seatbelt a jammed. Will not release. This was repaired and this happened again on may 14, 2014.
Passenger seatbelt element sensor malfunctioned. We had to replace the entire passenger seat cushion with new sensor for a cost of $1843.00. A 2012 vehicle should nor require a new seat through ordinary use. Note:mini seatbelt sensor is molded into the cushion requiring a new cushion and not just replacing the sensor resulting in the high cost to the consumer.

The contact owns a 2012 mini cooper. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, there was a hissing noise. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who stated that it was due to salt and should go away over time. However, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to another dealer. The technician diagnosed that the brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown but the current mileage was 18,954.
When driving 2 months ago,was driving with my mom 9/13/1015,all 4 milestar tires busted, dealer replaced them with charging me 150.00 deduct, now same problem occured 11/25/2015,right passager same brand busted, now my car is in shop again missing work, stuck in fort myers right now,if it wasn't for my family i would not be here with these tires, the name of the tires mile-star
While driving down the highway on a winter day, the rear panel of the panoramic sunroof literally expanded upward and shattered. The bulk of the glass fell into the car. There was no impact with foreign objects or chips in the glass. This was a catastrophic failure.

Vehicle was in motion on a highway and after going over several pot holes the engine temperature warning light came on. The engine power was reduced and an engine failure light also appeared. This is when i pulled over into the off ramp and the vehicle came to a sputtering stop. I placed the car in neutral and pushed it to the dirt side lane of the off ramp. I opened the hood, smelled something burning, and saw smoke coming from the engine. I could see burnt circuits, burnt plastic, and coolant leaking all over the engine and exposed wiring. Had it not been for immediately exiting onto the off-ramp, the vehicle would have stopped in the middle of the highway without warning.
Both front wheel bearings failing at 23,000 miles... Ridiculous.

I could have almost died because of the fire; this faulty engineering by bmw/mini has already taken the life of a driver in south korea. Bmw issued a recall of the 2012 mini cooper s roadster, but when i had the car towed to one of their service centers, the technicians were unaware of this manufacturing defect and stated that the repair parts are unavailable. I see that my vehicle has been recalled, but when i type in my vin, no recall is attached to my vehicle. Bmw/mini is taking no action; they are harming and killing drivers of its vehicles.

While traveling on i90 at approximately 72mph, i heard a very loud pop and part of my panoramic sunroof had exploded. Once at a safe stopping place, i took a look at the sunroof and i didn't notice any outside force that caused this. I was not traveling near any overpasses when this occurred.
