Takata recall: the airbag light came on over a year ago and it says that the passenger air bag is turned off. It will come on and off randomly. I brought it in to the certified independent mini mechanic in town who said the passenger occupancy sensor is faulty and will need to be replaced. As it is right now, the passenger airbag would not deploy in the case of an accident.

My car is 2009 mini. Bought new. Air bag sensor in passenger seat went out @ 70,000 mi. Passenger air bag wont work. Dealer in birmingham, al. Gave a quote for $1300 for a passenger seat. This is a safety issue, mini must step up to the plate for recalls like chevy, ford, honda, nissan for recalls. I wont give you sharks $1300 for a new seat. My wife dies, my attorney's will be in touch. Give me a recall i can live with.

Air bag failure warning light comes on and stays on.bmw-mini has recalls for model years up to 2008, but refuses to acknowledge problem exists on 2009 and newer cars (some 2009's were built in 2008, in the affected recall time frame, but because they were designated 2009, these cars have been ignored)

Air bag warning light flashing on intermittently during operation of vehical and passenger air bag overhead status light coming on saying air bag is deactivated while an adult passenger is sitting in the front passenger seat. This happens both when vehicle is moving and stopped. Problem is ongoing.

The passenger airbag off light illuminated.it is intermittent and diagnostics show that there is an issue with the sensor in the seat.this requires complete replacement of the seat.although there is no danger to the passenger (airbag will not deploy), the car will not pass inspection when it comes due in nov 2015.

Passenger air bag light (yellow ceiling light) will intermediately turn and stay on to indicate air bag is off when a passenger is in the seat.

Passengers oc3 seat occupancy mat failed causing the passenger side air bag to be deactivated. Mini had extended the warranty on this for 10 years and 120,000 miles. My mini was less than 10 years old but did have 130,000 miles on 4/3/2019 when i took it into the dealer. Mini has refused to replace this defected part even thought they know it was defective because they extended the warranty. They also know that on previous years models they were forced to recall this part as i also own a 2006 mini that went bad and it took over a year before they finally did a recall. Minidoes not have a workable customer relations system that allows the customer to appeal this safety defect replacement rejection. The bottom line is that mini know they have a defective safety sensor and have a history of this being a bad part but are unwilling to do the right thing and replace it. They instead want the customer to spend over $1,000 dollars to replace it for their own safety. This is a bad company dynamic and shows no corporate responsibility.

Passenger seat air bag alarm is on constantly. We were told by mini dealerthat the pad that controls the air bag is faulty, or cracked.they also informed us that this exact problem is under recall for models 2005 to 2008, but not our 2009. We contacted mini usa and they said they don't control recalls.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact started the ignition and the front passenger's side air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed that the front passenger side occupant detection mat would need to be replaced which involved disabling the seat. The vehicle was not included under nhtsa campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags). The contact mentioned that the part needed to perform the repair was unavailable. The dealer was unable to provide an expected date for the part to become available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

The airbag for the passenger seat stopped working 3 years ago. I checked several times for a recall but couldn't find anything. I went to a dealership and was told that if there isn't a recall, there was nothing mini cooper could do about it. I took it to a mechanic and it will be over 900.00 to fix the problem.isn't it the responsibility of the car manufacturer to fix something that just stopped working (no accidents or any reason), especially since it is such a major safety issue?

Takata recall....my passenger air bag light has been on for two yrs now and for no reason i'm a single man with no dependent children so rarely is anyone sitting on the passenger side. Dealership want 100's for repair.rreally..so i have let it on.

I recently purchased a 2009 mini cooper and the airbag and seatbelt warning lights come on whenever i get in the car. The light came on recently when i started the car and it now occurs every time i turn the motor on. I've been online researching the problem and discovered that this may mean that the airbags will not deploy if i havean accident. This appears to be a problem facing a number of mini cooper owners and bmw has not resolved this problem after many complaints.

Same issue as many others have reported. Recently purchased with 68k miles. The passenger air bag indicator remains on no matter is a passenger is sitting there or not. Air bag seat mat sensor on the passenger side needs replacement but the dealership reported that there are no seat replacements available or even in production. Nor is there a possible date for a replacement. There is no way to make the car safe to transport passengers.

The passenger side airbag warning light went on at about 28,000 miles.from what i read online this has happened with other mini models, which have been recalled for this reason (prior years).it seems to mean that the sensor is not working and has to be replaced or the passenger side airbag will not inflate in an accident.

34,000 miles 2009 mini cooper. Passenger airbag light on and off intermittently.quoted cost to repair about $800 just for the part, possibility of airbags not deploying when in an accident. Seems to be a typical mini issue with a slew of similar issues (sometimes multiple replacements), sensor in seat cushion and entire seat would need replaced. Same problem that resulted in 2005-2008 model recalls, but not 2009? with the issue being this prevalent? very worrisome, passengers riding in car without the protection of an airbag deploying.

Occupancy air bag light stays on replacement 2 times now on again hit a bump it could at times go off. Replaced the water pump and oil pump not even at 60,000 miles

I went out of the country for 21 day and left my mini parked in the garage. I am the only driver of my car and take pride in appearance and maintenance. I was extremely surprised when i returned the warning lights was on. The mileage is just under 60000. The seat belt and airbag warning light on out of the blue (stays on). When i took my mini to the auto repair shop,it was suggested to look for recalls first. Upon research found alot of complaints about the same issue but no recalls for 2009. This is very disappointing and bmw should be ashamed. I will never purchase another product from bmw and will warn others before they consider making the same mistake. I will be trading my car in for an american made vehicle.

Airbag occupancy light stays on when passenger is no longer in car, sometimes occupancy light goes on and turns back off while passenger is sitting in car and driving at speed.mini/bmw claims that the 2009 hardtops are not included in their recent recall for earlier models, but the problem obvious still exists.really dangerous to have passengers in the car!

Faulty seat belt light/ airbag on.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While starting the vehicle, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the passenger seat mat sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.updated 6/3/15updated 06/30/15

Passenger airbag light flickers on and off even when no one or anything is in the seat. Does it when stationary or moving.

Takata recallthe warning indicator that my passenger air bag is off comes on frequently (with or without passenger).i am afraid to let anyone ride in my car.when i took it to the dealer they said it was an internal failure of passenger side front mat sensor, that i had not done anything to cause the problem, that there was a worldwide shortage of the part, and that it is a $1200.00 fix. I do not believe i should have to pay for that repair!! i wrote to bmw in july---no response.this happens every time i drive somewhere---with or without passenger. It comes on and off.....driving or stationary, all situations. The only documentation i have is copy of the dealership labor report from the diagnosis and a copy of my 7-19-2016 letter to bmw sent via email to miniusa.com. I have no way to scan those to attach.

Front passenger airbag sign was come out, even though passenger is seating and getting seat belt. Any damage didn't be gotton on the passenger seat, it is just suddenly appeared. It will make serious situation when i get accident. Airbag is really related with safety. I strongly belive that it has technical problem at mini. This problem will come out more and people may be injured by this problem.i saw article about airbag problem at mini, and mini made a program that recalls to fix airbag mat. However, it affects to until 2008mini. I don't think this problem only affects to until 2008 mini. Bwm mini have to investigate newer model and recall the passenger seat airbag as well.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the sensor on the passenger side needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.

The front passenger airbag got disconnected and will not operate in case of accident. Lights indicating that the airbag is off remains on at all times. I know several mini owners that have experienced the same incident, and mini dealers refuses to assume that this failure is due to poor design. I read that bmw (owner of mini) has had the same problem, and was obliged to repair this issue in cars as old as models 2005.

Timing chain , passenger airbag sensor when in motion.

I took my car into the auto shop for routine oil change and to check the air bag light since it came on at 56,000 miles. I figured it was an error and just needed to be reset, after a diagnostic was done i was told i would need to pay $1,100 for a air bag mat sensor front seat part that's currently on back order in germany and i wouldn't be able to buy one till april 2016. This is a major problem for a number of reasons. One, it is a safety hazard and somebody can die. Two i cannot see my speedomoter when i am driving so i no longer know how fast i am going. I am very upset whe ni expressed this concern to mini cooper corporate customer service and they didn't seem to care and told me the 2009 is not part of the 2008 air bag recalls. Are you serious? this is a safety issue. I never expected this from bmw/mini. There needs to be a recall on this before there is serious injury or death!

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While driving at various speeds, the passenger side air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently and became worse over time. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air bag module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.

Passenger side air bag not activated when sit is occupied. Airbag warning light on all times.

Passenger airbag light stays on and it is deactivated when i am driving. This appears to be a known problem with no recall in effect. I am seeking bypass options online to buy to always keep the airbag on regardless of having a passenger sitting there. Still very unsafe if a kid sits in that seat. This needs to be recalled

Airbag passenger light stays on when a passenger is in the seat and also stays on when is nobody in thepassenger seat . And the passenger light turns on in the rpm gage (in the rpm gage )

Passenger airbag off light on when passenger (over 25lbs) is sitting in passenger seat. As is the seat belt warning light in speedometer gauge. Also srs red warning light shows on tachometer gauge. These warning indicators are "on" regardless of whether vehical is idle (not moving) or when at speed( in motion)

My airbag sensor light is on continuously and my mechanic diagnosed it as passenger side airbag sensor mat problem. This is the same problem that resulted in a recall for 2005-2008 models in the nhtsa campaign number 15v205000. I've called my local bmw/mini service department, but they say it's not part of the recall and there's nothing they can do.

My passenger side airbag light stays on constantly, even if someone is sitting there

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that the srs warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the passenger side air bag seat sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

Air bag sensor light is on continuously, this is the same issue previous years have experienced and had recalls on and nothing has changed.this is very dangerous in the event of an accident the front passenger will have no protection.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the air bag and the seat belt warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

While i was driving my car, the front passenger airbag got disconnected and the light came on. Now the lights indicating that the airbag is off remain on at all times. At the exact same time the lightindicating that the passenger seat belt was not fasten came on as well and it remains on at all times while there is nobody on the passenger seat. The light remains on even if i fasten the seatbelt. I went to mini dealership and was told that i had to pay $140 if i wanted them to inspect my car, i decided to take my car to an independent mechanic instead who told me after inspection ($95 for the inspection) that there was an issue with the sensors in the seat and that the entire seat had to be replaced ($1100 to replace it). This is a very serious issue since the airbag will not operate in case of accident. I know several mini owners have experienced the same incident but mini dealers refuse to assume that there is an issue that needs to be taken care of.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator had illuminated and remained illuminated. Due to the air bag warning indicator illuminating, the air bag warning chime was activated as well. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags) however the vin was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While driving at any speed, the passenger side air bag light remained illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times when a passenger occupied the seat. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 29,000.

I have a mini cooper 2009 which today marks a year of purchase, for about seven months has been leading the warranty service due to faulty electrical system, air bag passenger and the car turns off while using. Unfortunately to get the car to service never can diagnose the fault.

Passenger airbag 'off' warning light stays on at all times even when someone is sitting in the seat.

The car has 55000 miles and the airbag light is on. After research the problem seems to be with the passenger occupancy sensor, also known as a passenger occupancy mat. Mini has recalled many vehicles for this reason, however they continue to refuse the problems continues with the 2009 model. This is a safety and costly issue.

Passenger side airbag warning light keeps coming on whether a passenger is seated or not in front seat. It originally went on and off at sporadic times and mimi told me that i should not place anything on passengers seat like my handbag as it will assume a passenger is sitting in the seat. The later part of june 2016, it came on and stayed on continuously.currently, have an outstanding repair order with mini but was told part has been on back order for well over a month.price quoted for repair $1240.00.i drive the interstate on a daily basis and am concerned that the air bags will not deploy if i'm involved in an accident.thelight comes on as soon as the car is started and will sometimes go off for a few minutes while driving, but will then come back on.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The south shore mini cooper was contacted and diagnosed the air bag sensor mat was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturers was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000....updated 10/23/17updated 10/24/2017

At approximately 65,000, 2009 mini cooper r56 air bag sensor light would flicker on and off, but now stays on all the time. No idea if this means that air bags will fail.

I was driving down hwy 16 (a straight a way 2 lane hwy) towards woodland when the display showed what appeared to be the water icon and i noticed white smoke from under my hood, so i pulled over and sat there thinking maybe my car was overheating. A truck coming behind me went by honking their horn and i looked in review mirror and noticed dark smoke coming from behind my car.. I then proceed to get out of my vehicle and couldnt get the drivers door open a gentleman came up to my vehicle told me to get out but i told him the door wouldnt open, he opened the door and was saying get out and away the cars going to blow up, that was my first acknowledgment that the vehicle was on fire. The police and fire dept was notified and came out to where the vehicle was at and proceed to extinquish the vehicle. I had to get the car towed by triple a off a friends of mines tow package that she has. Im contacting the fire dept and police today on getting some paperwork related to this today so all i have to show is pics.

The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with a defective oc3 seat occupancy mat. Mini of stevens creek located at (4201 stevens creek blvd, santa clara, ca 95051) was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and notified of the failure. There was no assistance provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 95,000.

Passenger air bag not working

Air bag light came on and does not turn off

Re: 2009 mini cooper air bag control uniton june 19th, 2013, at @ 54,200 miles, the air bag warning lights illuminated on the tachometer gauge and center speedometer gauge and an overhead light warned that "passenger airbag is off".on august 26, 2013, at 61,396 miles, the morristown, nj mini cooper dealership charged me $140 for the diagnoses of this issue.indicated on receipt that "mrs module has an internal fault..... Fault code 93d7 internal control unit fault.... Air bag control unit will need to be replaced and programmed.... Parts and labor costs $1100."service department informed me that part was out of warranty.research shows that this is an ongoing problem and that earlier model years have had corrective actions provided at no expense to the consumer.needs to be extended to the 2009 model year.

Airbag sensor mat does not recognize whether a person is sitting on the passenger side thereby not activating the airbag; this has been happening on & off for months; passenger airbag light comes on immediately despite occupancy while parked and during driving (all conditions-highway, city street, turning. This issue started right after the warranty was over. This is a safety hazard, as none of the airbags will deploy in case of impact. I fear for my safety. This is a manufacturing defect.

Light is coming on and transmission shifts smoothly but when you decelerate it bucks down. It happens anywhere on the roads when driving and you decelerate. The light that indicates issue with transmission, in the book it says i won't be able to shift out of park but there is no issue shifting out of park, so not sure if it is considered electrical or if it is powertrain

Hello, yesterday afternoon i started my 2009 mini cooper and noted that my gauges suddenly failed.the tach dropped to zero.suddenly i received a tire pressure warning light.i decided i would move the car to a more favorable location to look under the hood.as i placed the car in reverse i noted that my power steering had failed.i stopped the car immediately and popped the hood.i immediately noticed the smell of burning electrical equipment.i ran down to the basement to grab a wrench to disconnect the battery. When i returned i could hear pops and cracks and noted char on the hood interior.though the keys were out i continued to hear pops and cracks and felt heat accumulating .i finally got the battery disconnected and the popping stopped.after some investigation i found that the wiring near the power steering module was completely burnt out.the car drove fine the day prior.my wife is 38 weeks pregnant and i am shaken by the idea that this could have happened while she was driving the day before.

I have a mini cooper 2009 which today marks a year of purchase, for about seven months has been leading the warranty service due to faulty electrical system, air bag passenger and the car turns off while using. Unfortunately to get the car to service never can diagnose the fault.

On july 25th, aprox 9:00pm.my daughter (driver) have just arrived from college internship and arrived boyfriend family home (12-15mi trip).upon turning off the engine and getting out of the car she smell burnt and saw sparks and fire through the car front grill.boyfriend came and open the hood and noticed the fire.the boyfriend's father came and used dry chemical extinguisher to put fire out.report was made to mini cooper.i came later and notice several wires burnt.the car was towed (7/25, 7/26 early morning) and is today (8/7/2012)at montgomery county mini cooper rockville, md, awaiting inspection by bmw engineering.the car still pending repair.i took pictures last saturday (8/4).these pictures are available upon request.

We parked the car and 3 hours later is was on fire.itseems to have emanated from the power steering pump area but cannot tell with all the fire damage.the car is most likely a total loss.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While driving approximately 62 mph, the contact noticed the speedometer was displaying a reading of 70 mph. An authorized dealer was notified and the contact was informed the speedometers all of the vehicles were 10% off and there was no remedy. The failure mileage was 200 and the current mileage was approximately 21,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that after installing a gps system in the vehicle he became aware that the vehicle speedometer was given the incorrect reading. The contact mentioned that the gps read 51mph and the vehicle speedometer read 60 mph, but vehicle was going slower. The dealer stated that they were not providing any assistance given that the vehicle speedometer was in tolerance since the margin of error allowed was ten percent. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 21,300 and the current mileage was 22,000. Updated 11/29/12updated 12/4/2012

I stopped at a grocery store on the way home from work at approx. 6:30 pm on 11/17/11.i parked the car, turned off the ignition and locked it.when i exited the store approximately 13-15 minutes later, i found the car a smoldering shell surrounded by firefighters. It appeared to have spontaneously gone up in flames.firefighters could not determine a cause.there was no indication of any problems with the car prior to this incident (car performed "normally" and there were no alarm or flash indicators on the console suggesting a problem.)

I purchased a 2009 mini cooper with 16,000 miles in december 2011 through a dealership. In the spring of 2012 the car sat in my driveway overnight. The next morning both windows were completely down. It had rained 5 inches during the night and the pie was an aquarium. I had just had an oil change at a mini dealership so i called the dealership and was told i had to have it towed to them. The dealer refused to take responsibility for the water damage. The computer was replaced and paid for through a claim on my insurance policy. I told my insurance company to not pay the claim because there was a malfunction of the car. After the computer was replaced the windows again lowered on their own accord but this time they only went down half way. The dealer then said they reinitialized the computer. Since then the car has randomly stalled while driving in houston, merging onto the freeways, while driving in stop and go traffic and while driving at slow speeds. I took the car to another mini dealer in houston and they kept the car but claimed it never stalled when they drove it. The car continued to stall randomly. Each time the car stalled i took it to the dealer and after numerous times of being told there were no codes shown by reading the fob i quit taking the car to them. The car continued to randomly stall. In march 2014 the car stalled in 4:00pm traffic while i topped an overpass on a friday. After a wrecker towed the car to a mechanic the diagnosis is a blown head gasket. I have not gotten a second opinion and have not had it fixed yet. This mini cooper truly has serious problems and is a hazard to be on the road. I no longer drive the mini, will never drive another mini and i no longer have to say a prayer before i get in my car. I hope the nhtsa can provide some assistance with this situation .

Advised from mechanic that water is getting down from the front area below the windshield and is causing the body control module and other electronics to short out.got to where the car wouldn't even turn over to try and start.had to have over $3450 worth of repairs done and was told they spoke with mini and this is a known issue, but they haven't done anything about it.was told this will happen again if not fixed.was told to take to mini, but they won't do anything about it.

My vehicle experienced sudden loss of power without warning while on the interstate at full speed and was unable to be restarted. Luckily traffic was very light and i was able to guide my vehicle safely to the shoulder but the vehicle would not start. The temperature outside was around 15 degrees fahrenheit. It took over 2 hours for a two truck to arrive and my wife and i were lucky enough to have an emergency kit in the vehicle and were able to use the included space blanket to survive the freezing temperatures. Based on what happened i am certain that my vehicles timing chain had broken resulting in the loss of power and inability to start. This particular vehicle model has a known issue with this. My vehicle has had this issue before and was serviced by the dealer since it was recognized before any dangerous situations arose but this time i was not so lucky. The manufacturer is aware of this design flaw but refuses to accept any responsibility or properly fix it. My wife and i would have called emergency services but were told by the tow service that we would be helped sooner than what actually happened. I feel that this known manufacturers defect put me and my wife's lives at risk.

Just purchased used 09 mini , 2nd owner, on start up car sounded rough, dieseling sound and was told by dealer that it was common. Then when driving at low speeds or when slowing down, terrible rattle sound.took it in for an oil change, and the rattle went away, but then came back shortly before next oil change was due. Took it in for oil change again, and sound went away again, but then came back within days. Finally was able to get an appt with the closest authorized dealer, 50 miles away, but couldn't get in for two weeks in order to get a loaner. They had it for two days, replaced the timing chain, nylon parts were in the oil pan from the guides being shredded. Picked up the car on the third day, and fir almost one week it seemed fine. Just short of one week out of the shop and heard the rattle again. But then it was fine, so i thought it was an anomaly. One week to the day since picking it up from the repair, barely made it into the drive from taking my daughter to school. Called the shop and have it scheduled to go back in. Having the car towed to the shop as the repair tech treks me that it is "unsafe to drive."

Leak in turbo oil line due to cracks in plastic o-ring.after hundreds of heat cycles, the o-ring cooks its self and starts to leak oil onto the turbo.it seems to me that the product recall and installation of the oil line heat shield by ntsb should have also included recall and replacement of the turbo oil line.the oil line heat shield has not solved the problem of the baked o-ring in the turbo oil line and therefore the turbo oil line should be covered under manufacturer recall/defect!

Noticed decreased acceleration performance and visibly noticed leaking oil from the top of the turbo system next to the heat shield after returning home after a drive on the freeway.mini dealer identified the problem as a turbo oil feed line leak. Noticed on nhtsa forums that this is a common issue with mini owners and could become a fire hazard under the hood if not detected and quickly repaired.

When i was driving highway, a red warning light of "low engine pressure" came on, and the engine started to make noises. Luckily, i was able to come down from the highway, and soon after that, the engine stalled completely.it was a very scary moment. The car was towed to a repair shop, and they reported, "significant oil splash on right side of engine. Added 3 quarts of oil to try and start engine to determine if engine damage had occurred from loss of oil.vehicle would not start.vehicle sounded as if chain had jumped timing or engine damage had occurred.researched vehicle and found technical service bulletin (tsb) relating to seal on timing chain tensioner failing and causing tensioner to leak and loosen. May have loosened, causing jumped timing and possible engine damage. Job requires extensive labor and special tools we do not have. Recommend seeking dealer for futther assistance.the car was towed again to a mini dealership. Their diagnosis was:found oil leaking out at the timing chain tensioner, oil level low.crank but not start remove valve cover and found timing was off, re-adjust timing, retorqued timing chain tensioner, performed compression test, 8 cranks for each cylinderscyl 1: 60 psicyl 2: 55 psicyl 3: 35 psicyl 4: 30 psiperformed cylinder leak down tests, all were below 50%.used scope and inspect inside combustion chambers and cylinder walls. Found damaged and cracked wall caused loosing compression.need new engine requiredalso: water pump leaking and contaminaited the pully, friction wheel and drive beltthermostat is leaking

We parked the car and 3 hours later is was on fire.itseems to have emanated from the power steering pump area but cannot tell with all the fire damage.the car is most likely a total loss.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and came to a complete stop. The engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart on the first attempt. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

Timing chain tensioner failure.no warning whatsoever.timing chain broke, causing complete engine failure.out of warranty so mini won't touch it.will cost $7500+.

I was driving on the road, and suddenly i saw the car start to stop in the middle of the road, and i saw the smoke coming out of engine .the diagnostic was the engine totally is collapsing, and need new engine.

My timing chain was replaced and has an issue with the tension exactly one year later.

Recall id #167856 the vehicle was in motion on a highwayand it began to smoke, heat and smoke began to arise from the engine after i just picked it up from carmax and was reassured that the car was fixed after paying +900 dollars for my vehicle from being in the shop to not be fixed.vin number is[xxx]i believe my copper is apart of this recall that occurred in 2012 i leased the vehicle in march 2016 and not even a year later is my car able to drive as the incidentdescribed above occurred sometime in fall/winter 2016. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*pm

The timing tensioner on my mini cooper s backed out, resulting in a massive oil loss while at highway speeds. This is apparently a known issue by mini, but no known recall has been issued at this point.

Bought a 2009 mini s for my daughter in august of 2015 with 36k miles on it.since then i've spent over $5000 in repairs and the car is currently parked and not being driven because now the timing chain needs to be replaced.my car is 5 months past the "warranty" period for this service bulletin campaign, and this repair will likely cost another $3000or morei've paid for to repair the oil leak in the turbo line as well as the water pump failing, and replaced the valve cover due to oil leaking, all well known issues with this car.the timing chain and tensioner issues are well known by bmw/mini as well and there is no recourse for owners of these cars at this point.my car only has 48,000 miles on it! there is no reason for all of these parts to be failing the way they are.i will have spent more than double what i paid for this car before its drivable again.very unhappy with mini!!!!!

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact statedwhile starting the vehicle, parts of the engine sound as if they were loose. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the technician confirmed that the timing chain assembly was defective. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure and current mileage were 60,000. Updated 06/10/14*lj

At about 65,000 the car would just randomly rattle & turn off at any stop including during rush hour when car had to come to a rolling stop due to traffic. Car also skipped gears, also just randomly. We were unable to take to a mini service center due to my daughter having it at college where mini was not available. We did take to a reputable mechanic and unable to replicate the symptoms and diagnostics not telling him anything he could not "fix" the problem.....twice. We know that mini has had issues with the timing chain and they claim that our model and year is not part of this issue. Well we also have a 2010 mini cooper and the same timing chain issue with similar symptoms has just been repaired for over $1800.

Defective timing chain.vehicle lost power while driving on highway.

I am being told by knauz mini repair that the timing belt needs to be fixed.it is a $2000 repair.in looking at the internet, it seems that this is a common problem that can have tragic consequences.in fact, there is one class action suit in nj about it.mini refuses to take responsibility to a design failure.something needs to be done.

I noted that at idle the engine of my 2009 mini cooper was not running smooth and instead beginning to pulsate/vibrate. Within in 3 days i had my mini at the service center. On the way to the appointment the engine cut off at idle at a stop light but was able to restart. No sensor light. I was informed that there was a timing chain failure. As a result there was extensive damage to the engine. The damage also caused an oil leak so that the engine was running without oil, though i'd recently received an oil change. Additionally, the vacuum pump was also leaking. At no time did any sensor lights come on as a warning, including a check engine, low oil, or low coolant . I was informed that repairs would be upwards of $3500.00, over half of the value of the vehicle. Despite the class action lawsuit settlement that i inquired about, mini failed to acknowledge knowledge of the problem. It was my understanding that the settlement of the lawsuit resulted in extending the warranty on these vehicles for the timing chain issue to 7 years/100,000mi. My mini only had 64,000miles and was within the 7 year mark. Additionally, i learned that mini had previously issued a recall for the vacuum pump. However, i was repeatedly told that for both of these issues "[my] vehicle was not one of the affected vehicles."

Occupancy air bag light stays on replacement 2 times now on again hit a bump it could at times go off. Replaced the water pump and oil pump not even at 60,000 miles

My 2009 mini cooper hardtop with 6 speed manual transmission consumes one quart of engine oil per 1000 miles.this is truly unacceptable. It is an ongoing problem and expense that is very annoying. Not to mention the safety side of it and the possibility of burning out the engine.bmw/mini needs to take responsibility and rebuild and repair the engine to correct this very important problem.

My car started off with a rough idle and occasionally wouldn't start. The engine light came on and the car became jerky while driving. It has sudden spurts when it wants to take off. I ran the code and got p0012. From there i have replaced multiple parts but i think i landed on the timing chain. I know there was a settlement with these years but for some reason this particular model wasn't included in the settlement

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, a loud popping noise was heard from the engine before the vehicle suddenly stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the timing belt had malfunctioned. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 65,000.

During my commute to work on 9/27/12, my car completely died while i was driving in the middle lane of the freeway. The car was towed to a garage, where it was found to be leaking an excessive amount of oil. During inspection, it was assessed that the timing chain "jumped" and caused a catastrophic engine failure. At the time of this incident the car had 54k miles on it and there were absolutely no warning signs prior to the failure (i.e. Leaking oil, engine rattle, etc...). Furthermore, since i purchased the car in february 2012, i have performed regular maintenance on this car (new brakes, tires, alignment, regular synthetic oil changes) to ensure it stays in good driving condition. Apparently, this has been a frequently reported issue with mini cooper and the problem could have easily resulted in a fatal car accident while i was driving on the freeway! the estimated repair cost (with labor) for this failure is approx 10k!!!mini should be held responsible for this faulty craftsmanship. A 3 yr car with 54k miles should absolutely not need to have a new engine replaced!!!

I took my mini cooper to passport mini in montgomery county maryland for the hpfp failing where they changed it and then told me that the turbo oil feed lineis leaking and that the timing chain had stretched and was going to fail. After i told them that i know that they have had problems and complained some they said that they would cover 30% of the chain replacement and a complete detail of my car and that they were being "generous". I explained to them that i wanted my defective chain fixed not a car wash. After reading this website i am hoping to get the oil feed line replaced too. It to is very well documented. If it goes up in flames while my wife and daughter are in the car which one of the executives at mini or bmw will write me to apologize for this? this totally unacceptable behavior for a company. Lawyers wont help mini wont help bmw wont help. No one wants to do the right thing for the consumer anymore! all of us deserve to be treated fairly. This is why we have government, for times like this when the big companies run us over and laugh at us!

The thermostat failed, the temperature elevated, the freeze plug fell out/broke out of place causing the head gasket to blow out.the coolant leaked into the oil and caused it to become "milky" therefore blowing out my engine. I was driving on the freeway at the time of the incident and the car failed to accelerate. Luckily people were kind enough to let me pass from the far left lane to the nearest exit and i did not crash.

I was traveling on nj turnpike and my vehicle blew up.catastrophic engine failure.water pump also broke.

At 89,044 miles my 2009 mini cooper, purchased from vista mini suffered a catastrophic coolant loss due to a cracked thermostat housing, and as a direct result the vehicle severely overheated irreparably damaging the engine. I was driving along the turnpike at highway speeds when the warning indicator light for the engine temperature came on, and before i could safely pull the vehicle over the vehicle rapidly slowed to a veritable crawl (allowing me just enough time to get it off the road). The vehicle was ultimately towed to a mini dealer for inspection, but they determined that it would need to have the entire engine replaced. Which would be a rather costly repair, requiring an outlay of funds far greater than the vehicle's value. Thereby substantially decreasing the likelihood of completing the required repairs. I purchased the vehicle believing it to be a quality product, and one capable of being driven for many years to come. However, the experience i suffered severely shook my confidence in the product, so i began to do my own research on the cause of the failure. It turns out that not only mini engines, but also those manufactured by bmw, share a similar defect, in that they both are prone to the thermostat housings cracking and causing rapid coolant loss. Couple that with the well documented criticism of the location of the coolant sensor in the engine, and you have created the perfect nucleus for generating a cataclysmic meltdown of the engine that lies secretly hibernating within the product line. Therefore, i do not feel that it is fair for me to have to bear the burdensome cost of repair for a problem that is endemic to the product line as a whole.

2009 mini cooper.consumer writes in regards todefective timing chain tensioner and vehicle engine failure.

Bought mini cooper in 09/13. Since then the water pump needed to be replaced. Timing chain needs to be replaced. Only driven the car 9 months. I have spent considerable amount of money on this car and haven't driven it a year yet. It only has 8600 miles on it.

I had my oil changed and automatic shifter replaced under warranty rite around 49500 on odometer. I have a 100k maintenance care plan that covers all engine oil changes, brakes and rotors. But right around 53000 i kept getting the service in 1700 miles light when ever i start the car and goes away. The miles started reducing sooner than the actual miles driven. I went to mini showroom to check what was going on and they said i need a oil change according to key fob(they changed my engine oil just 3k miles back) . I got the call that afternoon saying my timing chain tensor was bad and leaking oil. It's a car less than 4 years old with 50k miles, this shouldn't happen. They said it can grenade the car if i driving without fixing. The parts was $33 but labor was $400. Wth mini. People are not buying warranty for this. In the morning i was proud of having a mini that covered engine oil change under my 100k warranty. But evening $450 ripped off my bank account. Can't take this anymore. Happy i did not grenade my engine. But not happy taking the $450 charge. Some people here get the same problem even after fixing this issue in 20k miles and mini doesn't seem to keep up their word on there 2 year warranty on their repairs. I think i'm going to change my car in a year. I like the drive but can't take this repair bills.

Turbo oil line leaksand drips on turbo manifold causing burning oil smell and smoke.the engine caught a small fire, lucky i wasparked on side of a highway road up in the mountains. (no fire stations or very little traffic) i smelt something burning under to hood when it happened and caught the flames in time to extinguish the fire. 2 seattle area mini dealers state that this is a problem with all the turbo engines in this class.they want you to pay for this repair it's a $1300 fix.i believe that mini/bmw needs to take responsibility and repair/recall the turbo oil line because it poses a safety issue the car could catch fire and potentially injure someone cause an accident, or worse death.

The vacuum pump (attached to exhaust cam shaft) on my 2009 mini cooper jcw seizedon the highway in moving traffic (luckily in the right hand lane) - vacuum pump seizer led to exhaust cam shaft failure, which led to multiple engine part failure / engine puncture (destroyed engine and timing chain): destroyed engine = no power in moving traffic = serious hazard.

I was driving home from work on 21 november 2013 when the check engine light on my mini came on.i called the dealer to schedule the appointment.by the time i got off the phone with the dealer, the light turned off.around 5 miles further down the road the light came back on and then the car erupted in flames.i am unsure where else to file a complaint but i thought i would begin here.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While making a right turn at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. After several attempts, the vehicle was able to be restarted and resumed normal operation. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure recurred on several occasions. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The vin was unavailable.

Timing chain , passenger airbag sensor when in motion.

The engine was rattling heavily when the car ignition was on around 5 pm at the workplace parking lot . In the meantime, the check engine light was flashing.the car failed to deliver the power to the transmission.a few days late, my car was towed to a local dealership and diagnosed with leak oil from one of timing belt tensioners and a broken tensioner.the dealership had to replace the broken one witha new timing belt kit together with tensioners as a goodwill from themini cooper usa (85% warranty deductible). Even though, i felt the quality of this important engine parts was unacceptable with such a low mileage on the car. The timing belt of this model was a metal chain located inside the engine boxand supposed to last life-long without worry.i was lucky that this incident happened just in the parking lot. I could not imagine potential consequences if this incident happenswhile drivingon the highway. I sincerely believe the manufacture bmw/mini should be fully responsible for such a defect product and a proper action by the manufactureshould be considered to avoid such an incident happening to othercustomers who own this model.

The timing chain tensioner on my mini was changed as part of silent service bulletin which aught to be a recall. By the time it was replaced it was too late, now a year later my timing chain is out of spec and rattling away in my car with a replacement set to cost about $2000 for parts that mini claimed would last the life of the vehicle.mini refuses to replace any parts until they've failed so i'm stuck either paying out of pocket and never seeing a dime back, or risking life and limb on the road until these parts fail so that mini can own up to their mistake...

My mini has under 50,000 miles and is a 2009, and two months after purchasing it, one week after a new oil change a rattling started in the timing chain region under the hood. There are several ongoing and recent lawsuits involving the faulty timing components, however bmw has refused to do a recall. I have no other option where i live than to take it to a mini dealership, which is taking advantage of this situation, quoting a ridiculous amount of $2000-$4000 for a complete diagnostics/repair. I can't believe how common the problem is and the fact that a company that is known for being reputable, bmw, is being so unprofessional in admitting the fault. Also, i had to tow my mini to prevent the chain from spontaneously braking on my way to the dealership as well, just another fee, to prevent incurring an even pricier damage to the turbo engine, just unbelievable.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving approximately 45 mph with the illumination of the check engine warning light. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. The technician stated that the water pump would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000. The vin was not available.

While traveling on a highway at @ 55mph, the coolant temperature warning light illuminated yellow and then red on my 2009 mini cooper. I stopped the vehicle and observed that the clips which secured the lower radiator hose in place had broken and the radiator hose was hanging horizonally across the front of the vehicle, dragging along the ground. A hole had been worn through the hose and the coolant had leaked out. After having the vehicle towed home ($285), i purchased a new radiator hose and clips from the mini dealership ($160) and had it installed by my mechanic ($100).i also lost a 1/2 day of work.a total loss of over $600. Because of poor design and/or inferior materials internet research shows that this is a common mini cooper problem.i did not hit anything which would cause this issue, despite mini cooper's attempts to place blame on the driver's who experience this issue. If mini cooper would properly address this issue and remedy the situation, it would spare countless driver's from being stranded on the side and the expense of fixing what should have been remedied by a service bulletin or recall.

In september of 2014, the check engine light of my 2009 mini cooper came on.i took the car in for service at the mini cooper dealership in fife, washington and was told the timing chain needed to be replaced.when i purchased the vehicle new i was told the timing chain would remain maintenance-free throughout the full running life of the engine. Obviously this was not the case. All maintenance has been performed at the mini cooper dealership in fife since i purchased it new in october 2008.

2009 mini cooper. Consumer writes in regards to recall concerning electric auxiliary water pump *tgwthe consumer has not been able to get the recall fixed, because it would require him to ship the vehicle, as there are no local dealers where the consumer resides. The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. While driving approximately 60 mphthe headlights did not have sufficient illumination range. The dealer was contacted and stated they are required by law to illuminate that way so other drivers are not blinded. The contact had not experienced a failure but was concerned about the illumination range . The contact stated that they do not illuminate far enough to see in front of him. The vin was not available. Thecurrent mileage was 11,900.

I filled out your safety complaint portable from but could not submit it. When i used the link on the pdf form, it told me there was no such address, and when i used the link in the covering e-mail, i repeatedly received the message "file selected is not a portable form!."is there another way to submit it?

The fuel line leading to the injector rail was damaged by the heater hose support bracket. The abrasive edges of this plastic bracket rubbed a hole in the high pressure reinforced rubber hose and created a fuel leak in the engine compartment. This was discovered after the car was parked in the garage and gasoline fumes were very strong after exiting the car. I read up on the internet and discovered another similar case, and i traced mine to the bracket as the problem. Http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2007/mini/cooper/10467501.aspxwhen ordering the new fuel line, i was informed a new support bracket for the fuel line was recommended when changing the line (approximate total for line and bracket - $135.00). Bmw in indianapolis has sold four lines this year so far. When the new parts arrive, i will assess if revisions to these part(s) have been made under the "radar". Luckily my garage door opener/exhaust did not ignite the fumes/fuel.i have photos of the hoses/bracket and fuel line interference, and fuel trail on them if needed.

The fuel line ruptured when driving my car under normal conditions.the car started to smell strongly of gasoline, so i had it towed to the dealer rather than re starting the car.apparently, this is a common issue in mini coopers due to a poor design per the authorized mechanic.the fuel line sits next to a heater line, and a combination of rubbing and heat caused the fuel line to rupture.mini is aware of this problem as they have changed the fuel line design to now have a protective sleeve that prevents abrasion and protects the fuel from heat.not only did this repair cost me $500, but it seems like a major safety concern.why has this not been a recall for mini?i am very concerned as a consumer.

After taking a off ramp from the interstate the car lost power and sputtered and jerked. Later the same day. After getting back on the interstate the car again sputtered, lost all power and i took the next exit i was afraid i was going to get ran over

The timing tensioner on my mini cooper s backed out, resulting in a massive oil loss while at highway speeds. This is apparently a known issue by mini, but no known recall has been issued at this point.

Faulty seat belt light/ airbag on.

I was driving on the highway 12/04/2014 with cruise control active going about 75 mph. A truck in front of me became too close because he was going slower. My car began accelerating and i hit the brake to slow down, and de-activate the cruise control. However nothing happened and my mini-cooper continued to accelerate and i hit the rear end of the truck. I used the cruise control on/off and turned off the cruise control and i stopped accelerating. I changed lanes to pull over, however i had no brakes. I exited the highway as there was a big hill, however with no brakes i went flying through an intersection while honking my horn, and through the red light. The only option was back on the highway after the light and i eventually slowed down and then used the emergency brake to stop. I really panicked and thought i was going to die. The truck had no damage, however the mini-cooper got a dent on the hood. This also happened briefly about a month ago, where i hit the brake and my mini continued to accelerate while in cruise control, however when i turned off the cruise control that time, the brakes were fine and i had a close miss of rear ending another car. In hindsight i should have put my 6 speed in neutral or turned off the car. At the time, these options didn't come to me in a panicked state.

The contact owns a 2009 mini cooper. The contact stated that while reversing, the power steering warning light illuminated. The failure was experienced numerous times.the vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed. The failure was located at the power steering electrical column, which would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 45,000.

I noticed power steering fluid on my driver side floor mats.i checked underneath and noticed that is was dripping from my wiring harness. I called alexander mini cooper and they told me to take it to a mechanic to check out the problem and if they couldn't fix it to bring it in and have it diagnosed for $180.00.they said that they have never heard of the problem but i believe it is a faulty power steering pump on my car.can you assist me with any recall information so that i can get this repaired.

Takata inflators power steering went out, going down road and wemt out.

2009 mini cooper. Driving on hwy.101 with flow of traffic (65-70 mph) with windows up. The road is clear and flat (i.e., no construction). The back sunroof just exploded, sending fragment shards of glass blowing into my car. Drove to nearest gas station and covered the gaping hole in the sunroof. When i got home, i noticed that all edges of the broken glass point outward. I did not hit anything for this to have happened. The explosion was instantaneous and frightening. I don't know if any glass hit other cars.

Took vehicle in for installation heat shield for turbo feed line.this is a recall and newly installed part to protect the turbo feed line due to overheating.to my surprise they install the heat shield only to tell me that the turbo line is failing and want to charge me $1000.00. The failure of the line is obviously due for the same reason they are installing a heat shield. Thus item should be recalled and replaced.

Car was bought brand new and taken to the dealership for service. Infact it was serviced just a few thousand miles before this happened. My mother was drivingon the high way coming home from work then it spontaneously combusted and exploded. Had she not noticed the flames she would have died. This is not okay.

It's the engine burned up was driving car got hot started smoking and the engine burned up very disappointed didn't even finish paying for it.

Check engine light ac not working water pump

After sitting in the parking lot for 12 hours, the car spontaneously burst into flames.the car was a total loss.

Shocked to find an 8-inch hairline crack to the upper right portion of my windshield (right above my eyes on driver's side). The windshield glass spontaneously cracked on the exterior, with zero evidence of impact, harsh weather or temperature changes. It's been 60 degrees for weeks now and my mini had been safely parked, outside of my home. I researched this issue and found multiple complaints from mini customers with the same problem. I will be taking legal action against mini for their disregard for my own and public safety. Shame on the nhtsa for settling with mini on charges of sub-par glass installed in mini cooper hatchback models until 2008, a few months before my '09 mini was produced.

My wife was driving her mini cooper hardtop with glass sun roof on the highway and suddenly the glass sun roof shattered and fell over her.there was no car nearby or any external object to cause the damage.the glass sun roof just shattered with a loud band.my wife was injured due to the glass falling over her and some of the pieces went into her and bruised her forearm.the glass sunroof was not tempered and the pieces were significantly large with sharp edges.it fell over her body and hit her head first.she suffered head injury also.i took picture and looks like the frame that holds the sun roof is slightly bent upwards.i believe it is a manufacturing defect with the glass sun roof.

I was on the i-40 highway from gatlinburg to nashville. There was a hole on the highway. My car passed the hole then front right wheel became curved. Also, i have black box in my car. I can prove it. I need to change my wheel it takes more than 500 dollars.
