1999 mercury villager engine caught fire after stopping. Consumer states that the engine caught fire after stopping at the gas pump. The fire was extinguished.(ohio traffic crash report # 10-0074-90)
Gas pedal sticking upon acceleration from stop. Whether or not at light, stop sign or leaving parking space. Also having problems when accelerating on highway when pushing pedal down to accelerate. Problem is when i try to pass someone on highway, it feels like it's not getting any gas. Repair facility cleaned throttle chamber which seems to help. However, the problem when trying to accelerate fast when passing someone is still there.
The engine had been making a knocking sound upon cold starts until engine warmed up.took it in to dealership and found they were replacing engine.wonder if this is a common problem with 1999 mercury villagers.i'm filing this so you will have on record in case of other complaints.

The contact owns a 1999 mercury villager. The contact stated that the ventilation blower would not emit air or heat when the air conditioner or heater was activated. The vehicle was inspected by the owner and he noticed that the power resistor had overheated and burned and would need replacing. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the vin was not available.

Repeated headlight failure due to faulty headlamp connectors.
Headlights fail frequently on my 1999 mercury villager.the dealer informs me that this is due to overheating of the socket which provides power to the headlight bulb.both headlight sockets have failed multiple times on this vehicle, yet the dealer indicates that no tsb or recall has been issued to resolve this issue.i believe that this is a gross safety issue as there is the possibility that illumination could be lost during night driving.to my knowledge, this has not been addressed by nissan or mercury.
In january, 2000 and now today, march 6, the socket connecting the power to the head lamp bulbs have both failed.the left one failed in january and the right one failed today.in both cases, the ground terminal of the socket seems to be corroded and the plastic in that area of the socket is slightly melted.as neither high os low beams would work, a bad ground connection would make sense.replacing the socket with a new one fixed the problem in boyh cases. I have one of the old sockets if you would like to see it.
Headlights do not turn on by switch. Vehicle was serviced, and the mechanic noticed that the headlight socket melted.dealership replaced the socket lamps, but the problemrecurred.
Nhtsarecall campaign 99v347001 tail lamp socket. Vehicleexperienced a problem with the rear tail light socket. The turn signal indicator (inside vehicle) can't be seen during the day and is hard to see at night, the sound of the flasher can barely be heard.
Turn signals are inoperable, when applying the signals, they are not visible from the outside of vehicle, which could become dangerous when makingright or left turns .dealer replaced the switch and the socket which did not correct the problem. Problems have finally been solved after 3 more trips to the dealer. *ml

1999 mercury villager estate mini-van. Purchased new in 1999. Owned briefly when gas pedal stuck, but if kicked down on released. Of course, the vehicle would jump forward from the hard kick on the accelerator. The problem was corrected by replacing the throttle body...only for a short time though. When it happened again after the manufacturer's warranty period a quick 20 minute cleaning of the inside of the throttle body fixed the problem...again for a while. This sticking or the throttle most often causes a delay in the forward motion of the vehicle; however, it has also occurred when i was trying to stop and in order not to run into another stopped vehicle the ignition had to be turned off or placed in neutral. I thought of reporting this when i saw on a mercury blog page that many others have experienced this same problem.
The contact owns a 1999 mercury villager.when coming to a complete stop at an intersection, the contact noticed a strong gasoline odor coming from the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and a technician determined that the fuel retention straps failed, which caused the spot wells to separate.the repair would cost $800.the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 99v205001 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting); therefore, no compensation would be provided.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure mileage was 167,000.
The 1999 through 2000 mercury villager vans have a defective throttle body assembly.my gas petal started sticking on my villager van late last year.i finally had the throttle body assembly cleaned and throttle control sensor replaced in january, after several failed attempts by the mercury dealership to rectify this problem.i had another mechanic replace the failed throttle body control sensor (in may)after only 4 months (part was guaranteed for 12 months) and the throttle body was ok for a short period of time and now it's sticking and the gas petal is hard to depress.it is a major accident hazard because you need to know that you can pull out safely from an intersection or accelerate when entering a ramp on the interstate.with this problem you have to press the gas petal harder than normal and then you feel like you are getting whiplash because the petal will unstick and you shoot forward.our car had a check engine light that came on and it was also associated with this problem.from the contents of this article, i believe that mercury and nissan are completely aware this danger.http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/08/20/biz_villagersuit20.htmlplease investigate this issue and force mercury & nissan to recall all of these vehicles and agree to replace the throttle body assembly free of charge.when you have taken care of your vehicle maintenance wise and the manufacturer knows there is a safety problem and does nothing, then they should bear the brunt of their faulty design and be liable for any injuries or deaths associated with this issue.more links belowhttp://www.allworldauto.com/comments/mercury_villager_comments_and_complaints_101-573-1.html.
My 1999 mercury villager with approx 39k miles started showing this problem in april 2006. When i press the gas pedal after the light turns green, the pedal does not depress. I press harder, it finally depresses, but the van lunges forward. One time i got honked from behind. This happened about 5 times. I was planning on taking it to the shop. Then a few days later the van started trembling during idle and the "service" indicator came on.i took it to the shop on april 29th. They charged me approx $550 to replace one fuel injector and clean the throttle body and other fuel injectors. Yesterday, may 3rd the van did the same thing with a stuck gas pedal. I searched on the internet and found several complaints of this nature. Please let me know what options i have.
Check engine soon light came on and i took the vehicle to the dealer as instructed in owners manual.the vehicle had been chugging when idling at a stop.for the second time in 6 months when the vehicle was presented to the dealer for service - a fuel injector had to be replaced.fortunately i had purchased an extended warranty so the vehicle was covered except for the $50 deductable.however, there will come a time when the warranty runs out and the mechanic informed me that he has seen that the fuel injectors in this model "go out every 20,000 or so" miles.i asked if there was a preventive maintenence procedure i could deploy and he advised me there was not - "the injectors will fail" i was instructed.i wonder how many other mercury villager owners are experiencing the same problem.
When the gas pedal was pressed, there was a delay in acceleration.the consumer had to pump the gas pedal to get the vehicle to move. The dealer stated new injectors were needed.. Also the blower motor failed.

No incidents as of yet. Bought a 1999 mercury villager estate, the throttle body will not let the van idle at normal speeds. You can not stop, van goes automatically, rpm at 3000, all the time. You take your foot off the gas , it will go 35mph all day long, you try to stop that. When you come to a stop light, very hard to stop, and hard to keep it stopped. I searched the web, and there 100's& 100's of complaints of this problem, with no recalls, , how can this happen. For all years of that van,1997,1998,1999,2001,2002. This a crash waiting to happen. Search the web for info, you will see. This a very bad thing, people much have gotten into crashes.....
When stopped at light, upon accelerating when the light turns green, the accelerator is hard to press. It does not depress. You have to either press too hard or pump a few times for it to get going. This is very dangerous when you are taking a left turn on a solid green light without a green arrow. You may stall and then lunge forward into an oncoming car

If there is anything just even slightly hanging over the back hatch when it is closed it will not release (open).a recent incident occurred when i had a piece of cardboard from a clothes hanger hanging over the edge of where the back hatch closes.it would not reopen.i took it to the dealer and they couldn't get it open.i finally pulled the cardboard out, piece by piece, and then the hatch would open.it has done this with clothing -- shirt sleeve, blanket, pencil, etc.if something is on the edge of the door hatch floor, and gets stuck in the hatch, the hatch will not open.from a safety aspect, if a child or someone else's finger got slammed shut into the hatch, you would not be able to open the hatch to get the finger out!!!!it does not have to be something thick, nor does it have to be by the latch -- in fact it is never by the latch because the latch is on the sides.the cardboard from the hanger was the circumference of a finger.no one could get it open -- the cardboard had to be ripped out from under the hatch.

I reported to the dealer that the auto trans makes a "chirp" noise betwteen2nd & 3rd gear. They initially denied a problem. I recently confronted the dealer with sb613610 and they claim that operation and durability are unaffected by this noise. Yet their own internal documents reveal that vehicles made after 5/19/00 will not have this problem. What did they do to correct the problem in newer vehicles? why are they unwilling to correct the problem in existing vehicles? your assistance in investigating this problem is greatly appreciated.
Transmissionoperated erratically.had to try three or four times to put it into gear, but it did not work.
Vehicle was being drive when automatic transmission failed and reverted back tofirst gear. After stopping, turning off engine, and restarting, vehicle would not come out offirstgear when being driven.vehicle was subsequently towed to dealership , carman ford in new castle de), but was unable to diagnose problem.dealership reported that they could not duplicate.vehicle was picked up by owner and began to drive it home when problem re-occurred.vehicle is now at cottman transmission in west chester pa who diagnose metal shavings in the transmission well (minute fragments) that may or may not be causing the problem.
Transmission began slipping shen shifting between second and third gear after throttle body was replaced by selling dealer.took vehicle to another dealer who placed and additive in the transmission.this did not solve the problem and the transmission started slipping between third and fourth.took back to dealer and they said "they could not verify customers concern".vehicle is becoming almost scary to drive at this point and is out of warranty.ford needs to address this problem.

Steering wheel will move to the left and right during slow speeds on smooth roads. The movment is visual and can be felt when hands are on the steering wheel. Excessive delay when shifting from reverse to drive and noise can be heard when trans is shifting from 2nd to third.
Mercury dealer informed us that there is a problem with the transmission slipping between 2nd and 3rd, however ford is not fixing the problem because it is still under investigation.in the meantime, they say the van is safe to drive...however when pulling out into traffic their is a significant risk as to whether or not the vehicle will decide to go into gear...causing a potential accident.can you please look into this problem?we feel as though the manufacturer is giving us the brush off and we would like to get some results.thank you.
Dt:the consumer states that approximately a year ago the accelerator pedal began to stick in the up position.when he triedto go slow from thestop position it would not work, causing him to place more pressure on the pedal causing the vehicle to lurch.the consumer took the vehicle to the service dealer, and they suggested that he place afuel injection cleaner in the air filter, which helped, but the problem recurred.*sc
While vehicle was parked and keys were in a locked position consumer's child was able to switch gear shift from park to drive withoutbrake pedal being applied. Dealer has not been contatced.dealer stated everything was functioning as normal.

Complaining about a 1999 mercury villager not having a latch system in the back seats.
The rear seat belt retractor jams on a lever thats located in the back seat when the belt is pulled all the way. This happens whe the belt is retracting, and when this happens in inables the seat belt system.dealer has been contacted, and replaced the system once before, but the problem has occurred again.
Seat belt failed to keep a passenger secure.the passenger was injured due to seat belt failure.
Vehicle was involved in a 3-car accident where owner rearended another vehicle at 10 to 15mph, and the bench seat seatbelts did not properly restrain occupant. Occupant was thrown into the seats in front of them. Alsoairbags did not deploy. Dealer has not seen vehicle.
I have a 1999 mercury villager purchased from blue hill lincoln mercury in canton, massachusetts. I have a problem with the seat belt mechanism on the 2nd row of seats on the far left side. The belts will intermittently lock up trapping the passenger suddenly. The only recourse is to unbuckle them and reset them. This problem occurred once before and after much argument the dealership reluctantly replaced the mechanism. Now i am having the same exact problem and since i cannot demonstrate the problem on command, the dealership refuses to replace the faulty mechanism.
The sea belts on passengers (back seats) lock most the times and sometimes i have to move my daughter to the front and my wife to the back seat because we cannot use the seat belts, took van to the dealer on my first year or second and even they said they fixed (never got the paper work and i even requested since was under warranty). A friend of mine who own's a van like mine has the same problem.

Brakes are grinding and making streaking noise. Also, tires are split.dealership is aware of the problem.
We own a '1999 mercury villager van.the brakes have had extensive repairs twice ,and now must be replaced again after only 13,000 miles.secondly, the accelerator sticks.it has been repaired once and requires repair again. (first time under warranty.this time at a cost of approx. $460.)the repairmen at the dealership claim the device used to prevent sludge from accumulating on the accelerator line tends to warp due to heat exposure allowing sludge to accumulate on the line and causing the accelerator to stick.it was first repaired at 35,000 miles and now requires a second repair at 73,000 miles.
When applyingbrakes a noise occurred andpedal went to the floor ,causing extended stopping distance.please give any further details.
Defective design of the braking system caused agrinding noisewhen braking, and could cause extended stopping distance which might result in a crash.dealer replaced front brake rotors twice, and turned rotors once/ brake pads 4 times. Also nois ecoming from sub-frame bolts. Dealer could notdetermine the cause of the problem.
Applied brakes on freeway which was dry at the time; caused me to slide spin out, and slide backwards across three lanes of traffic.could have resulted in a fatal accident.i did not "jam" on my brakes.two days later, i am getting severe vibration and the rear brakes are very hot, rims very warm to touch and smell from passenger rear wheel.mechanics can not see anything wrong.something is very wrong to cause rear brakes to heat up like that.did not have parking brake on!i was driving for 1/2 hour before the vibration started.it would stop for about 5 minutes after i would bring car to a stop and then continue.something caused me to skid and spin out on the freeway; applying the brakes hard (but not jamming them!) should not cause me to spin out like that.i fear something is very, very wrong.dt
Front brakes are grinding and don't grab evenly.also, caliper wears out on inside.contacted dealer, and dealer stated moving parts are not covered.
I sent this letter to the ford motor company.no reply yet.i also have copies of the work that was done to the van.i hope you can help. Thank you very much.on thursday may 3, 2007 we were driving, with my wife being the driver, north on u.s. 441 in florida.as we passed a truck we heard a growling noise.it was our van.i-75 the traffic was stopped up from an accident so we tooka parallel road to the north.the van was still growling.when we got to u.s. 27 i told her we had better find a mercury dealer and see what the problem was.we turned back into ocala and stopped at a small independent used auto sales business.we were told the mercury dealership was just down the street, so we got back into the van and proceeded to start out.my wife had to back up a little toward busy u.s. 441.then she screamed ?i have no brakes!?quickly she put the van into drive and it screeched and lunged forward.now we were headed toward a chain-link fence.still no brakes, so she was smart enough to turn off the key and we stopped two feet from the fence.needless to say she was my heroine.we got out and she said, ?look at this hub cap.?the plastic connectors that hold it to the wheel were melted and the cap had fallen off.the wheel was too hot to touch.both front wheels were very hot and now you could smell brake fluid.we called a wrecker and the people that owned the auto sales store gave us a tire store that was suppose to be the best in the area.i called them and they would take us in right away.apparently the wheel cylinders engaged on the front of the van and the intense heat from friction built up had melted the brake hoses.we are sure glad we had not ventured onto i-75.is this a manufacturer?s defect that hasn't been found yet?
Consumer hadmaster cylinder replaced in september 2000. It has failed again and at dealer's at this time. Servicemen atmercury delar said thatpart wasdefective, andnot vehicle.manufacturer was saying let them repair it again. Consumer has a handicap & useshand devices, and is not able to maneuvervehiclewith thisproblem.
Sitting at stop sign when loud "pop" occurred-car started rolling; brake pedal went to floor without any result-used parking brake to stop & avoid turning car-released brake to roll out of intersection-again pedal went to floor without result-again used emerg. Brake to stop on side of road-tow operator checked brake fluid level(full) and under car for leaks(none) then pressed brake pedal which went to floor with no results-dealer claims hole in "diaphram" and previous could not happen only power braking out-this is not so there were no brakes power or otherwise working on this car (exception of emerg. For more times than i can remember, i again today had the agonizing experience of my vehicle steering locking up while trying to steer it. I have a 1999 mercury villager that was purchased new in 1999. On numerous occasions since then i have had my vehicle in at ford dealerships with the complaint of the steering locking up. This can occur at any given moment when making a turn. It seems to happen especially when the weather is damp. I have had several close calls. Every time i have taken the vehicle in they never find anything wrong with the steering. After another near mishap today i am very reluctant to drive this vehicle because of the potential danger. I am extremely frustrated that this has been occurring every since i have had the vehicle and no one seems to listen. As stupid as this may sound, i have told several family members, close friends and co-workers about my ordeal. I have instructed them to pursue legal action in the event that i am either killed or seriously injured in a accident involving this vehicle.

While traveling during rain or over puddles, power steering would fail. This condition is intermittent, dealer has been contacted. Upon purchase of vehicle consumer noticed noise coming from front end while turning the steering wheel, after several inspections, consumer was told that the noise was normal, dealer could not duplicate, consumer states that noise is intermittent, manufacturer notified.

I have a 1999 mercury villager, periodically the gas pedal will be very hard to push. It actually got stuck accelerating once. I have researched this online and have found many many complaints about this situation.i have found that mercury has recalled the mountaineer (campaign # 00v422000) for this "exact" issue but has taken no action with the villager.i have replaced the whole throttle body once, soon after i purchased the van, but after the warranty had expired.as i recall it was at a $600 expense to me.i would like to know what is being done about this issue.thank you.

The accelerator pedal sticks when at a stop sign / traffic light or coasting in traffic. I must push very hard on the pedal for the accelerator to move. This happens several times a day. Throttle clean by dealer at my expense - solved issue for now - dangerous design.
Vehicle lurches forward unexpectedly. Tookvehicle to dealer, and they stated that carbon has build up in throttle body.
When stopped at light, upon accelerating when the light turns green, the accelerator is hard to press. It does not depress. You have to either press too hard or pump a few times for it to get going. The gas pedal sticks; i have taken it to the dealer on several occassions and they say it is a problem with this car.they sprayed the butterfly valve with wd40 and unstick it.it only lasts a couple of months.then back to the dealer.
The throttle sticks in the closed position, requiring an inordinate amount of force on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle.once sufficient force is applied to overcome the resistance, the vehicle will lunge forward unexpectedly, and has the potential to cause damage or injury.this problem has supposedly been corrected by the dealer cleaning the throttle body assembly, at my expense.however, based on the reports from other complainants, the problem is likely to recur and be a continual hazard.

Gas pedal sticks. Frequently after coming to complete stop at a light, when pushing down on gas pedal, pedal goes down, but nothing happens. Usually, pedal must be pumped several times before it engages. Had it cleaned out by dealer who said it was not covered under the extended warranty and cost over $200.00. I refuse to pay to have it repaired/cleaned again. This is a safety concern and ford motor company should replace the deffective parts. Some day i will get rear-ended.

My 1999 mercury villager, had the throttle body replaced at 23,580 miles, and now, at 76,000 miles, it needs to be replaced again. Considerable foot force is needed to overcome a "stuck" accelerator pedal, so the vehicle jumps forward from a stopped condition. This is unsafe and annoying!

In the newspaper today i read about sticking accelerator pedal, which i have experienced after about 1 year of ownership.i may have received a recall, but i don't remember.however, the problem continues and creates a dangerous situation because the pedal will not always go down when needed.his is an intermittent problem.is there any information where mercury will fix this problem?
1.gas pedal on 1999 mercury villager sticks or does not always respond when pressed. Unit has done so since bought new/repaired once by dealer but continues to do this off and on/you never no when it will or won't respond.
Gas pedal sticks ("off") when attempting to accelerate either from a stop or after coasting.vehicle has been back to dealer twice.first they cleaned the throttle assembly, second time replaced the throttle body cable.neither 'repair' did anything to help the problem.i checked your site and saw in 1998 and 1999 there were several more problems on these vans just like ours.we've nearly hit cars in front of us when trying to slowly move up in traffic, and often spin the wheels when trying to accelerate from stop signs or traffic lights.
Accelerator sticks in an unpredictable manner that can cause the vehicle to lurch forward. The vehcile is especially difficult to control in wet or icy conditions. It appears i will need to have the throttle body cleaned. This vehicle has the same engine and drive train as the nissan quest which had a recall for this repair. The dealer was contacted (they sell both nissan & mercury vehicles) and he indicated the recall was only for the quest.*la
The accelerator of my mercury villager sticks.this problem occurred previously and the dealer first cleaned the throttle body and then in january 2003 replaced the throttle body at a cost of about $400.00.less than a year later the problem has occurred again.the accelator always sticks.i will now have to pay again to have a new throttle body installed.i noticed on this web site that this is a very common complaint for 1999 mercury villagers and it's twin the nissan quest, along with 1999 mercury mountaineers, & mercury cougars.i can't understand why ford isn't being required to do something about such a dangerous condition.i've had many near accidents.

On my 1999 mercury villager minivan, the gas pedal sticks when trying to accelerate from a stop or after coasting. I have to step hard on the gas pedal to accelerate. This is unsafe because when the van moves it moves to fast, causing problems if there is a car in front of me. *la
Almost every time i drive the van, the accelerator has at least once incident when it is non-responsive.i have to hit the accelerator with my foot hard to get the car to move.if the car does respond then we accelerate rapidly.sometimes it takes more than one depression on the accelerator to get action. If a car is coming toward me i cannot rapidly avoid an accident.i cannot depend on the car to perform.this is a definite hazzard which needs to be addressed by the manufacturer.this is a 1999 mercury villager van.
Gas pedal sticks. You have to actually stomp on the accelerator to get it to move. Has done this since i have owned the vehicle. Dealer has cleaned throttle cable 3 times. Indicates it needs new throttle assembly. Techs were advised (per my dealer) from ford to only clean throttle assembly when consumer complained. Now after many miles and no warranty they suggest changing the complete assembly at my cost.i understand that ohio residents have a class action suit for this. How do all other owners of these vehicles from other states particpate in making the manufacturer responsible for this defect?
The accelerator sticks in an unpredictable manner that has caused near accidents.
The accelerator sticks; excess pressure is required when starting from stop, causing vehicle to lunge forward.dealer said new throttle assembly needed.
Accelerator pedal was sticking after stopping, vehicle was checked repeatedly by dealer, who cleaned throttle cable.however problem was still occurring. Consumer very concerned about safety while driving on highway.
Accelerator pedal would stick intermittently. Dealer notified, and wasunable to duplicate the problem. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.
The accelerator on my 1999 mercury villager sticks in the "up" position.this has caused several near accidents when i've had to stomp the accelerator to unstick it.this is a problem when stopped in traffic because it could cause you to ram into the car in front of you.also, i have found myself "stuck" in the middle of intersections.the problem first occurred about two years ago and was "fixed" by the dealer.the problem has now become much worse and i was told that the throttle body will have to be replaced at a cost of $420.00.i saw from the customer complaints on this website that this is a common complaint from mercury villager owners & nissan quest owners (the same van as a villager).i have asked people at random that i've seen driving villiagers and many of them say they have the same problem.i don't understand why this isn't being fixed as a recall since it is clearly a safety hazard to have a stuck accelerator, and it appears to be a common problem for the mercury villager & nissan quest.
Gas pedal sticks on my 1999 mercury villager and is very unsafe. I transport my three children every day in this van. I thought i purchased a great family vehicle but it seems just like many of the other complaints on this site my pedal started to stick after just hitting the 30,000 mile mark. Coincidence??? i don't think so..... Just had my van in for thousands of dollars of service and now this occurs and i am told it's going to cost me at least $800.00 to repair the throttle on my 5 yr old van with only 34,000 miles on it.how is this possible???
While accelerating the vehicle vibrated then jerked on it's own.the consumer had take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and themechanic determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The windshield wipers turn on whenever they feel like it.sometimes they don't come on at all.there is no predicting when they will work or not work...it's at random.i reported this to the dealer.they said they contacted ford and there is no "fix" for this problem.it is definately a safety concern to have wipers come on unexpectedly or not come on when needed.
To date no one will fix these problems they say they dont have those parts to do so. No safety defect mentioned.
When drivingturn signal chimes and windshield wipers will turn on/off by themselves. Also, tape player performs erratically.
Our windshield wipers sporatically turn on and startle driver.they have been doing this since about two months after we bought vehicle.ford is aware of this danger but cannot find a replacement part.they know the multifunction switch is defective on many of the vans but will not replace until presumably some time in october.my wife and i feel this is a hazard.they will go on as if they are on a 15 second delay and do this for 10 minutes straight, then stay off for the next hour.ford says pull the fuse to the wipers if it gets annoying.
