While drivingair bag light flashedat all times.previously, the same problem appeared, but with engine checklight coming on, and had to be repaired.
I went to the mercury dealership today for a front wheel alignment today on my 1997 villager. I was informed that this vehicle requires a four wheel alignment, due to the front wheel drive. I was informed also that in order for the dealer to get the alignment in specs, rear shims would need to be installed in the rear two wheels of the vehicle. I was also informed that these shims are not installed when the vehicle is built, but are required in almost all cases once the vehicle is out on the road and has been subjected to normal wear and tear. The price tag? a hefty $347 plus tax! i had to decline the repair, i think it is pathetic for ford to cut costs in this manner, always passing up quality in the interest of saving a buck! the moral of this story is i paid 80.00 dollars today for a front end alignment and nothing has changed! i think ford/mercury should be called on the carpet and required to install this part on all villagers. This in my opinion should have been done in the first place!
Panel right in front ofair bag is popping up, andair bag has not come out yet, butpanel that covers it has beenpopping up. Contacted dealer, anddealer couldn't doanything about it.

Driving my '97 mercury villager into a commercial driveway at about 3 mph, both air bags deployed upon going over a slight bump.
Problem: interior systems:passive restraint:air bag.-when i started my vehicle on sunday evening, january 28th about 6:15pm, the "air bag" red warning light was flashing.i called the dealer the next day, monday, 29th and scheduled an appointment to look at this on thursday, feb 1 at 7:30am.the light continues to flash as of this writing and has not stopped.second problem:this has not been addressed until now because i had only just now while researching tsb's that owners have had problem with "intermittent self-activation door locks."i will also address this with the dealer.the mileage indicated at the time of this problem is approximate.i do know that it first occured when i used door lock mechanism when getting out of the van on a saturday in october.i was attending my son's football game. Thanks for your efforts.additionally, i have never had a problem or complaint w/skinner sales. Signed, rich monahan.

While driving both driver's side and passenger's side air bags deployed without a cause.also, for two days there was a burning smell within the passenger's compartment.consumer paid little attention to the smell. However, the smell might be linked to the air bag problem. Consumer has contacted the dealer.dealer repaired airbags and windshield under warranty.ford sent an engineer to look at the van, concluded the air bags was defective due to general wear and tear. *ml
Driver was at a stop and lifted foot off the brake and lightly rear ended another vehicle at about 1-2mph, and both driver's side and passenger's side airbags deployed. Dealer has seen vehicle.

Our customers 1997 mercury villager van caught fire while driving in the city. Wonder if this could be related to the nissan maxima recall for alternator fires? i have seen 3 maxima alternators burn and we are not even a nissan dealer.
I am replacing my ignition switch for the second time in the last 3 months.*nlm
Check engine light kept illuminating.*phwhen the vehicle was purchased the consumer noticed that the check engine light was on.the dealer reset it but it kept coming back on.it was later determined that the problem was with the speed sensor.

Exhaust manifold bolts broken off in engine causing a serious exhaust leak.was quoted $1,100 min. To fix it at manteca ford.later found out that there is a hidden manufactuers warranty on this defective part and neither manteca ford or ford motor will acknowledge this or help with the liablity of the repairs that were done.i have contacted others who have had the same problem and they were taken care of or ignored like i was.i think there should be a recall on these bolts and all engines should be repaired.these are family vehicles that alot of us work hard and rely on these vans to get our children around and ourselves to work.what happened to truth and honesty?
I am one of tons of people with the notorious exhaust manifold studs breaking issue! which causes the check engine like to come on, and dangerous fumes to enter the vehicle. With 4 children, this is not a good thing...and the price is more then a family of 4 children can afford at $1500-3000 depending on the damage and now i cannot have my vehicle safely inspected due to this issue. Please have them issue a recall on this and protect our families.
Design of exhaust manifold is defective.
Our air cond. Hose needed to be replaced one mo after the warranty exp. Says there was a leak. Cost apprx $500.00 to replace. Who ever heard of transmission totally shot at 32,000 miles?
The air conditioning compressor failed.my mechanic indicates that this is a chronic problem with mercury villager vans.the accelerator sticks intermittently when trying to accelerate from a stand still, causing a need to press the accelerator harder which causes a jerking of the van.
Transmission control module malfuntion triggers check engine light to come on and stay on.
We started reporting the problem with the sliding door on 7/15/99. The lock did not lock or unlock consistently whether using the remote or the inside automatic button and the door rattled like something was loose inside. The service dept at capitol lincoln mercury(richmond, va) decided to replace the antenna on 8/16. This did not correct the problem. On 10/4, i took it back again and they replaced the sliding door lock actuator. This corrected the problem with the door locking/unlocking but now, the child safety lock is stuck and the door still rattles.****i initially reported a problem with the steering wheel shimmeying and the brakes grabbing on 8/16. They reported the brakes were okay - 5mm. I had the tires replaced and aligned which took 3 days because they didn't realize that they only had 3 tires. The steering wheel continued to shimmey so i took it back on 10/13. The weights had fallen off so they had to rebalance the tires. They also stated the the vibration when braking would be fixed by turning the front rotors which they did. They stated that with the turning of the rotors that i should replace my brakes which i did...for $55.83. The next day, 10/14, i took the van back because it sounded like something was rubbing under the car. This problem was corrected by replacing the rotors that they turned the previous day. Currently, the steering wheel still shimmies just not to the extent as before. I'm taking it back again on 10/20.

Filler pipe vent hose was recalled in march 2001 recall#00s59 and replaced.the same part failed in the exact same manner and was replaced november 2003.ford says that the filler pipe vent hose is out of warranty and will not pay any replacement costs.did the march 2001 recall adequately address this problem?
Intake manifold failed.
Might be worth looking into the fuel pump system on this vehicle.original was replaced 4/2/2001 and replacement pump starting to fail late in november 2001.dealer/ford not working with customer since 3000 miles over warranty (even though we are within 12 mo. Period). Just seems weird that two fuel pumps would fail within that short a time frame.
Consumer was on a short road trip when vehicle started shaking and cut off. Vehicle restarted, and was taken to nearest mechanic. Fuel pump filter was dirty, and once it was cleaned vehicle operated normal. 3 hours later, vehicle died due tofuel pump failing.independent mechanic replaced and repaired vehicle. Sliding door does not latch completly when closed. Door also opens partialywhile driving and door ajar light comes on.
Our doors lock by themselves intermittently.mostly happens when vehicle is shut off and doors are unlocked, as the passenger side door is opened the doors (all) lock again.it has happened a few times when the doors are shut, the vehicle will lock by itself.it once did it with a child inside and we had to get the other set of keys to unlock it.this could have been more of a problem if the other keys were not in close poroximity.

Doors lock by themselves whether consumer is in vehicle or not.it seems to be worse in hot weather. Contacted dealer, and dealer had tried twice, but has not fixed problem.
The saftey issue with my mercury villager started on 2/18/99.the doorlocks will lock by themselves on many occasions.the doors will lock when the keys are in the ignition and a door is shut, when the keys are out of the ignition, when driving over any bumps in the road.as of today, my vehicle has been in for service for the door locks 5 times.a couple of weeks ago my 3 year old was locked in the car in his carseat with the keys in the ignition.i live in key west florida and it is beginning to get very hot here.i am seriously concered with the problem and it has become a huge safety concern.i am tired to taking the vehicle in for servicing and a month or two later it is back in with the same problem.i have phoned ford customer service.they had the service manger from our one local dealership call me.(his phone call took 2 weeks to get)we eventually set up another appointment for the van. (after i had to wait another week while he was on vacation when i originally called him back.) i have esp coverage on my van which is paying for part of the rental fee for the van i rented while mine is in the 5th time trying to be repaired.i am not sure where to turn at this point with these safety issues!!! i am becoming very disgusted with the entire process.i am utimately afraid of my toddler being locked in a car in key west when it is 90 degrees.please respond.following are the dates the vehical was in for servicing for the locks: 2/18/99:8/25/00: 10/02/00:1/30/01: 2/28/01 : and : 5/8/01.

Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic informed the driver there was not a recall for this vehicle.consumertoldthe mechanic that the locks had been replaced numerous times, butproblem still exists.
When attempting to exit out of driver's side door, driver's side door fails to open from inside, preventingoccupants from exitingvehicle. Also, sliding door fails to open frominside, preventingoccupants from exitingvehicle. Consumer has contacteddealer. Consumer states passenger side door at times does not open, passenger side door has to be double clickedto open and close.
There has been an ongoing problem with lock immediately relocking after unlocking is attempted. This has been into the dealership on 8 separate service attempts, include an additional problem that was developed with grinding locks. This is a major safety issue, and the dealer and manufacturer do not feel that this is a major safety/ security issue.
Latch on passenger side sliding will not secure. It comes partially open at slow speeds and variations in the road. This occurs even if the door is securely shut and locked.
Passenger's side door locks.will not unlock in manual mode or automaticmode. Problem is intermittent. Delaers cannot correct problem.

Vehicle is able to shift gears even though key has been removed.
My 7 year old daughter thought it would be fun to see how many times she could wrap the shoulder belt around her neck. I was unaware as i was getting my other children buckled in. Before we were about to leave, i turned to see if she too was buckled in and found her using her fingers between her neck and the belt to try to free herself as the slack had been pulled back in. We immediately got some scissors to cut the belt to let her free. The potential for some other kid doing this and not having anyone or anything around to help makes me nervous. Bizarre, i know, but kids come up with ridiculous stuff all the time.
Seat belt buckle holder is missing for third bench seat, closest to sliding door. Whendriver slides foward it causes lack of protection, especially in event of a lateral impact accident.
Was driving vehicle andwas involved in a crash. Upon impact, middle row passenger's seat belt failed to lock up , and threw passenger onfloor.seat belt remained buckled , and was still around passenger. Third row passenger had also experiencedsame problem with the seat bel, failed to lock up. Driver's seat belt worked.
Consumer complained aboutautomatic door lock problem.the doors locked without notice. Currently, hatchbackwill not open. Also, driver's side seat belt did not retract.
Headrest guides are no longer available from manufacturer (ford or nissan). The guide itself is a cheaply built plastic sleeve which breaks easily (i've been through several in my nine years of ownership). Unfortunately, the headrest cannot be secured to the seat without them!!
Driver reports he must have had his foot on the brake and accelerator at the same time (semi-panic brake application). Police report states "tire marks" on the (dry) pavement. One does not produce "tire marks" on dry pavement (no turning involved) without brake application. Driver had episode of microsleep: when alerted by the event taking place, he could not get the vehicle stopped in time to prevent hitting and fatally injuring a pedestrian. Upon examination of accident vehicle, inspector discovered unusual arched accelerator pedal design wherein the brake pedal was located only 1 5/8 inch from the arched accelerator pedal allowing brake application and acceleration concurrently if certain conditions prevail. Examination demonstrated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the pedal went substantially below the accelerator pedal. Furthermore, with the 4 5/8 inch wide boot the driver (and inspector) wore, it was easy to accidentally catch the edge of the accelerator pedal, consequently enabling the user to accidentally depress the accelerator and brake pedal (under certain conditions) at the same time.
Constant problem with brakes with my mercury villager gs, 1997.
Anti lock brakes fail intermittently, one incident resulted in a vehicle collision.
Reporting problem with vehicle applying brakes by itself at 40 mph or more.more acceleration, the more vehicle would vibrate from the front. Dealer notified, and was unable to duplicate the problem. Feel free to provide any further details.
Driver was at a stop and lifted foot off the brake and lightly rear ended another vehicle at about 1-2mph, and both driver's side and passenger's side airbags deployed. Dealer has seen vehicle.
Defective abs in 1997 mercury villager. While sitting still the brake pedal will release causing the vehicle to lunge forward possibly striking someone or something. I have researched this problem online and found several similar statements from owners of the same vehicle.

The "tabs" that hold the rear brake shoes on the wheel cyclinder sheared off.the brake shoes were just floating inside the drum.stopping ability severely deteriorated.i had to make emergency repairs at meineke shop.ford and dealership refuses to inspect parts to see if they are defective, unless i take initiative to persuade dealer to look at them, and they persuade ford rep to investigate.this cannot be normal wear and tear. A responsible company should determine if there are defective brake components in their manufacturing process.they should be required to pursue and investigate, not the customer who has already paid for repair.
Brakes not working properly, extended stopping distances.
Had total brake failure, pedal went right to floor, emergency brake went all the way down but had no stop effect. Ipressed on pedal to get car out of park so i was not moveing. All the brake fluid was out of theresivore
When driving and applying the brakes there is a loud noise coming from the vehicle, and consumer states the brakesare rubbing metal to metal and the noise comes and goes at times.dealerground the brake rotors and replaced the pads.also, the brakes are grinding, and the vehicle has been to the dealer for repairs four times, and they can't determine the problem. *ml

Steering column cracked from factory causing the vehicle to experience severe alignment problems and instability at highway speeds.
I was driving along after shopping and i started to hear this dragging or bottoming out sound so i pulled over to see what was happening and to my surprise the front frame on the passenger side that holds up the engine was broken i then opened the hood and saw that the engine was sitting sideways toward the passenger side.i limped the van home and had my mechanic look at it and he said that it was on fixable and then i called five body shops to see if they could fix it and they said no and that mercury villagers was known to do this and that they were recalled for this before.

Currently, the steering wheel still shimmies just not to the extent as before. I'm taking it back again on 10/20.
Door locks continually lock and unlock themselves wheter driving or parked
All of the doors lock by themselves. It has happened many times. We can be out of the car or in it. The keys can be out of the ignition. It usually happens when we are parked but it has also happened when we were driving. There have been numerour times whenwe have tried to unlock the car with the remote and it "quickly" locks itself back up; this may repeat itself for or five times before we can get into the car.
While travelingdoors lock and unlock out of control. Also while vehicle is turned off.power lock system is defective while vehicle is running or shut down, consumer states locks are inoperable, dealer refuses to replace system and they have not been able to repair it.consumer states vehicle had engine problems two days after purchase.
Door locks lock independently making entry and exit difficult- technical service bulletin 9823-6, presents danger of being locked in car for small children in dangerously hot summer weather in arizona
Doors lockautomaticallywhen consumer is outsideof vehicle. Dealer was contacted, and stated they had no corrective action for this matter. *ml
Intermittent self activation of the power door locks.it locked our 22 month old in vehicle after child was strapped into car seat and van door was closed.my wife, luckily, had removed the key from the ignition before she picked up baby.in hot weather my wife would have left the van running with the a/c on and our daughter would have been locked in an automobile that was running and the keys in the ignition.there are 3 tsb's covering this defect, but ford will not repair the problem at their cost.i have a friend with a 1993 villager that has the same problem.we have had to hide a key on vehicle in case we are locked out of the vehicle and our daughter is locked in.
Power locks lock on their own, w/or w/o key in ignition, sheriff's office had to jimmy to get my 2 year old out. She was restrained by car set. Repeated attempts to get repaired by dealer. Only fixed after warranty expired and us charged $265.07. Claimed it to be "different problem" though records show same compaint. Want refund.re: http://cbsnews.com/now/story/0,1597,310231-412,00.shtml regarding same problem.
Power locks on all doors inadvertently lock without manual operation due to a malfunction with the lock actuator. All doorslocks while driving ,whenengine is off anddoor is closed.

Sliding door pops open.dt
I have contacted you before & talked to peggy about the side door of the villager opening. The vechical is leased and being returned 12/14/98 i sent you pics of the inner workings of the door- touching the styroform also makesthe door open & a little round thing does too other than just the rod that i told you already. Dealership refuses to fix panel saying i "abused the vechical" ifeel this is a serious saftey issue since the vechical is designed for families. Thank you
Sliding door pops open, creating an approximate 12" opening.this occurs at various speeds, with door unlocked or locked. The door doesn't have remote electrcic opening,, i suspect theproblem to be purely mechanical, this has occurred approximately 10 times over the last 6 months.mre often during warm weather.
Consumer complained aboutautomatic door lock problem.the doors locked without notice. Currently, hatchbackwill not open. Also, driver's side seat belt did not retract.
Sliding door panel falls off, there is a spot on the door if consumer touches it the door pops open. Tires are bald, and air bag light flashes.
Tires have gone bald by16000 miles one showing steel belting. Company claims it's the front wheel drive & should have rotated at 6000 miles, refusing to warranty. I never heard ofrotating tires before 20,000 miles. Then why are the rear tires bad too? thank you.( dot number: 024005 tire size: p205/75r15 )

Since september 1997 consumer kept taking vehicle to dealer for hesitation, engine light coming on , stalling, bad gas milage and sputtering. Dealer kept telling consumer it was due to reformulated gasoline. To dealer at least 12 times. Currently, vehicle is out of warranty, and dealer finds all fuel injectors need to be replaced,at cost of $1700.
None provided.
While drivingair bag light flashedat all times.previously, the same problem appeared, but with engine checklight coming on, and had to be repaired.
The throttle plate is rubbing on the throttle body, causing the gas pedal to stick during acceleration.
The air conditioning compressor failed.my mechanic indicates that this is a chronic problem with mercury villager vans.the accelerator sticks intermittently when trying to accelerate from a stand still, causing a need to press the accelerator harder which causes a jerking of the van.
Pulled into parking space; had foot on brakes; ready to shift into park; suddenly vehicle accelerated & went across the street; dealer can not check until thursday.
Intermittentlyaccelerator pedal would stick. Dealer has replaced throttle body.
Accelerator pedal sticks when vehicle is stopped. Requires excessive force to depress pedal, resulting in vehicle suddenly lurching forward. Dealer says this is common problem with villagers. I feel this is a serious safety issue.
Accelerator pedal sticks when accelerating from a stop, then, when it is freed, the van accelerates rapidly causing the van to lurch forward. This is dangerous for two reasons. One, when maneuvering in tight parking like situations, the van will lurch forward unexpectedly, and two, when pulling out into traffic there is a hesitation that could cause and accident if the response time between pushing the accelerator pedal and the time the van actually starts moving.
The accelerator linkage periodically sticks when you accelerate. We were told that this must be a problem since the parts were backordered and we had to wait a month to get it fixed the first time. It is sticking again and we are taking it back to thouroughbred ford in kansas city, mo where we had it repaired the first time. It cost over $200 for the repair. It is dangerous because when you try to accelerate from a stop to cross traffic it sticks and delays your time crossing the intersection.
After taking vehicle for a tune up foundaccelerator pedal was sticking. Then, took vehicle back for sameproblem, but dealer could not be responsible for it, and said what eas causingproblem was throttle boxpedal sticking.

Attempting to find the correctcontrol, (defrost) at night has caused me to leave the roadway.
While driving down the highway, driver side front window 'popped', shattered, then flew inward on me. Police inspection of vehicle did not find any slugs, was not driving under a bridge, nor no cars next to me.
Please refer to my e-mail this date to the "webmaster". No safety defect mentioned.
Whenradi/ heateror turn signal was in usewindshield washer would squirt fluid onwindshield. Also, overdrive would kick out, andbrake lights on left would go out if lightswere used.
Factory steel wheel split at weld and was replaced under warranty near 30,000 mi. Since then one other has been replaced at my expense and the two remaining factory wheels have developed slow leaks but are still on the vehicle.the rear air controll failed and was replaced under warranty at about 33,000 mi.it has failed again just over 75,000 mile limit of the extended warranty we purchased.we have had an ongoing problem with the a/c from the day we drove it home.at first it smelled horrible and after several complaints to the dealer they used a de oderizing machine with little to no effect.it then quit cooling and had to be recharged several times at periods of one day up to one week!at last they replaced the seals which solved the leak problem but the odor still remained.the customer service person at showcase lincoln/mercury described it"as though someone urinated in the ductwork or vents"after manysometimes heated discussions withthe service manager and the shop foreman they finally put me in touch with the district rep for ford/mercuryof which i still have the various notes i took during conversations with both mercury customer service and with the area rep.ultimately i was told i would get a $2,500.00coupon to use on our next purchase.as of this date some four years later we still have not recieved it and are being ignored by the dealership when we inquire once again.the odor is still present and will affect the trade in or sale value of the vehiclethe dealership says they have no knowledge of a problem with either the wheels or the a/c except mine!i refuse to belive that mine is an isolated case!until now i had no idea of how to contact anyone or organization that could be of potential assistance.
