I have a 1995 mercury villager. On 6/6/08 i heard a noise and saw and puff of smoke. I went to check it and saw nothing. I drove it home and the next morning the passenger seat and the passenger door were burned up. The entire inside was covered in smoke. The car would not start, and the mechanic said that it was would be too expensive to repair considering it's age and condition.

The paint is cracked on the hood, unknown what month, about 1997. We never had it fixed.drivers door seatbelt stays in the running position, it won't move forward, but it makes a loud motor noise, unknown what month, since about 1999. We never had it fixed.the seat belt on the right next to the middle seat fell off. We told the dealer. They ordered one. We went back about a month later they said it was too late to fix it. The transmission went out in about may of 1998, at about 120,000 miles. We had it rebuilt. It went out again about a yr later. We can't afford to have it rebuilt again right now. So it sits.in jul or aug of 1998, the motor went out. We were driving down the highway, and it started knocking, then quit. Also on christmas eve of 1997, we were going down the road and the thing sounded like all the rods were knocking. The temp gauge said it was over heating. We paid a guy $100 to bring it from edmore, mi to battle creek, mi. The next day we went out and started it, and it was fine.our tail lights also went out, the ford dealer fixed them. So needless to say, i will never buy a mercury again. If i had wanted a nissan, i would have bought a nissan.i have a 1976 ford chateau club wagon, over 250,000 miles. It has only had to have a transmission at about 240,000 miles. So i guess i am saying this villager is a lemon.thank you for listening, dawn green

!!!emergency alert!!!nhtsa recall no. 00v419002 mfg. No 00s59b presents additional, more serious risk of injury and explosion.my wife and i commute our children 30 miles to school (2 hours ave. Daily). She primarily drives the villager.in february of this year she developed serious tingling and numbness throughout her extremities including facial, foot and hand supersensitivity.the condition grew worse as the months passed.we spent may and june with doctors performing mris and nerve conduction tests to rule out ms or other neuropathy.until last week we were clueless.for about a year we began noticing faint gasoline smells in the cabin of our villager.the were mild at first.they became more intense in january of 2001.several months ago we got the notice of the referrenced recall regarding the fuel vent line.we eventually had the recall work scheduled for july 2, 2001.after returning to our ford repair shop at the end of the day on the 2nd, we were told to come back on the 9th because a new motor was needed per another recall, and that both would be done at the same time. We delivered the vehicle to ford on the 9th.by circumstances it was not finished until the 17th.by about the 16th, (1 week being without the vehicle) my wife noticed remarkable improvement in her syptoms.this gave me cause to investigate possible connection to the recall.my determination is that in addition to risk of gas spillage due to the cracked vent hose, gasoline fumes can enter the cabin if the airconditioning or heat is on the "max" position which causes a vaccuum in the cabin.this vaccuum draws gas fumes through the cabin wall near the gas fuel vent.we have had medical bills in the many thousands. My wife cannot drive the vehicle as she can smell the gas in the upholstery.and, this could be an "explosion" hazard rather than just a "fire" hazard.this needs immediate attention and warning to the public!!!!!!!!

Intermittently cruise control will deactivate by itself. Dealer has been notified.cruise control deactivates only at higher elevations.the vehicle has fuel vapor lock problem on hot days and long drives.

I was getting a check engine code for a long time although the problem was difficult to solve. Finally, i read on the internet that the egr bpt hose (about 2 inches long) was the common cause of this light to come on and off. When i finally got a mechanic to check, the hose had totally rotted away. If this is such a big problem, then ford should be fixing them. Also, the clamps to my flex tube and catalytic converter are rusted away and gone! i live in the southeast...shouldn't have been a problem.

Side sliding door sticks, sliding door window doesnt stay shut, locks will lock themselves ,back wiper malfunctions, grinding and squeaking from brakes, smell of fuel from passenger side and passenger p/w sticks sometimes

There is a very strong smell of gas inside vehicle. Consumer has gotten sick from smell before. Contacted dealer who was not willing to do anything about it.

This problem of raw fuel smell occurs mainly in the winter months but has occured in the summer on occasion.the van has been to the dealer approx. 10 times for this problem.this condition has caused me to leave the vehicle outside garage when it occurs for fear of the fuel vapors and hot water heater and furnace.mercury cannot find out what the problem is.they have fixed several items thinking it was fixed, but to no avail.my wife has been driving twice in a snow storm when the condition occured.she had to roll down the windows to get fresh air, if she would have been stranded on the road, no telling what she would have done.mercury has been advised of the problem and has put our vehicle under extended warranties to cover the problem when it occurs.also, they have offered us a $1000.00 voucher for the purchase of another mercury vehicle.the voucher is not the answer, nor is the extended warranty.this condition could prove to have long term health effects on my now 4yo daughter and my wife as fuel odors (benzene)is cancer causing.my family has been exposed to abnormal amounts of these products. This problem needs to be fixed for the sake of the safety of the families that depend on these vehicles.i noticed that there are several complaints logded and 1 tsb issued by mercury in regards to a fuel cap needing sealed (which they have done and wasnt the problem!)thank you for your attention in this matter.

The van started to sputter and the engine cut out while driving on the highway at 60 mph.i managed to coast to the side of the highway and notice smoke entering the passenger compartment.the smoke didn't smell like steam from overheating but a thick black smoke.i moved a safe distance from the van and contacted the police and fire department.the engine compartment burst into flames by the time the fire department arrived.the van was a total loss and the estimated damage was $13000.the insurance company wrote off the vehicle and only paid $9000.i suspect the problem of fuel vapours (appears to be common in the mercury villager) in the engine compartment were ignited by a spark from the plug wires from rain entering the engine compartment at highway speed.the dealer had replaced the fuel filler gasket under a recall a month earlier.

While starting vehicle noticed a strongfuel smell inside vehicle . Dealer has been notified, and can't duplicate the problem.please provide further information.

Strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle.

Strong smell of gasoline in passenger compartment while refueling. Also abs brakes lock up/failin panic stop.

I own a 1995 mercury villager.i purchased the vehicle from a used car dealer.since i purchased this vehicle three years ago, i have had a recurrent problem with smelling gas fumes in the passenger compartment of the van.i have taken the van to a ford dealership, an independent mechanic, a chevrolet dealership, and an independent service station.no one seems to be able to locate the source of the gas smell.i am concerned about my safety and the safety of my children.gas fumes are volatile, and if they are strong enough for me to detect the odor, then i feel the van is unsafe to drive.i have tried several times to have the problem repaired, but no one seems able to detect the source of the problem.i have contacted ford motor company directly, but i received very little information from them.i have read several complaints on the internet of other vehicle owners with the same problem.i have read where other vehicle owners have contacted ford motor company regarding this problem.when i called ford, they told me they had received no other complaints of this type.i feel there is a problem that should be investigated.my main concern is the safety issue of driving a defective vehicle.

Strong odor of gasoline in passenger compartment.happens intermittently, maybe every week or two.odor comes in through air vents; originates in engine compartment.(stopped and checked under hood; it was dark so i didn't see anything "wet" with gasoline, but the odor was very strong.)originally contacted nhtsa about (apparently unrelated) gas odor when filling tank.

Fuel leaks between the fuel pump and the engine, causing fuel to smell inside the vehicle. Dealer replaced the fuel pump and the fuel filler which did not correct the problem.please give any further details.

The fuel pump is not able to keep a continuous pressure of fuel to the injectors; fuel backtracks to the gas tank.the fuel pump had been emitting a whine for several months prior to failure.

Villager would not start up initially.when checked by dealership, the dealer stated that the fuel pump was unable to deliver constant fuel pressure to the engine and needed replacing. Owner is having fuel pump replaced.

We purchased this car with 30,000 miles on it.this is the second fuel pump failure/replacement.

Whenever filling up the gas tank fumes are getting into the vehicle due to a leak.

After starting the car, particularity in colder weather, there is a strong smell of gasoline in the passenger compartment.upon engine inspection, there is a noticeable gasoline "wetness" under the fuel injector.a number of visits to a local dealer in white plains produced "we smell it but cannot find it" response.new clamps on the rubber house under the fuel injector where "wetness" was observed did not prevent the problem.the problem appears progressive.currently (one year later), the smell of fuel is constant. *nlm

Fuel odor inside passanger compartment due to fuel line leak on fuel injector railsevere fire hazard bad placement of rubber fuel line.!!!!!

Hose replaced but still strong fuel smell but intermittent.no new leak found.

There have been 2 fuel hose failures and 1 recent hose recall.i believe there was either a defective purchase of fuel lines or defective specifications for the early 95 model.the 1st failure was for porosity where the fuel seeped through the hose when it was cold but sealed after warmup.the company was notified but declined.i have a copy of the letter sent.the most recent failure was a 1/16 th hole in the line to the fuel injector.the engine compartment was bathed in 10 gallons of gas over 7 miles before stopping to investigate the odor.there was also a recall for the filler tank hose due to defective material.i suspect the defective material or spec was used for all fuel lines in the early 95 model.

Fuel tankwas leaking. Fuel. There was an o-ring thatwas causing this leak. Alsothere was fuel tank filler hose recall onvehicle. But consumer was informed bymanufacturer that leakwas the result of 2 separate defects.

I believe that the transmissions installed in many of the ford and mercury minivans are unsafe.after speaking to several independents and transmission repair facilities i was told over and over again that it was surprising if the transmissions (of foreign mfg) lasted for 80,000 miles.i was told by my local dealer that to replace the transmission would cost $4,200.00!!i thought they were kidding!but he was dead serious and told me that it was a very expensive repair.the cheapest price i have been "quoted" is $3,000.00.surely that will escalate when the final repair bill is prepared.i believe that there are many people that have also been victims of these sub-standard components.i would like ford motor to be notified and if possible a full scale investigation to see if as many people as i think have been horrified to learn about the premature failure and subsequent cost are out there!

Transmission failed for following gears: reverse, 2nd gear, and overdrive. Also there is a recall for the nissan quest van for the cylinodes however, mercury-ford has not issued a recall and the mercury villager and the nissan quest are both manufactured by ford. Please check to see if there should be a recall on the transmission for this van as well as the cylinodes.

The consumer has been experiencing problems with automatic transmission.the consumer is having problems with shifting intodifferent gears.the manufacturer has yet to be contacted.

Defective part within transmission is causing the vehicle to become inoperative, will not go into gear, which could result in an accident.

Spring let loose in transmission slipped and chewed up gears in the transmission.

When it is cold outsideautomobile will not keep running after it is put in gear.when it is finally in gear,it has no power.front brakes are noisy, belts replaced, vehicle screeches when running.despite replacements and repairs for all these problems, they still exist. *ml

Lost reverse gear on transmission. Took to the nearest transmission shop. Owner said a piece had broken apart in the transmission, wearing a groove in the reverse cylinder. The transmission was full of metal pieces. After a $2000 repair, ford tells me that they won't honor any work done at a none ford repair shop. I believe that this defect has been seen in other transmission failures in these vehicles.

No summary.*mjs

The van reverse transmission failed, transmission shop reported that 95% of villager and nissan quest riverse transmission failed. I think this is a manufacturer defect.

Sliding door window has popped out, falling inward ,hitting child on top of head which could have caused serious injuires. Dealer has replaced latch and fitting, but defect keeps reoccurring.also, transmission failed at 49,818 miles.

Transmission would not shift into reverse and check engine light came on when taken to dealership after one week they looked at it and said that a spring had come loose in the transmisson and hadmade the transmission slip and then chew up the gearsnumber 3 and 4and reversethat is why it went out and the fact that they said it was defectiveand not well lubricated in the transmissionthat was why it went out due to no neglecton my part . So i need someone to look at the whole picture and see i had my van serviced by the same people who did the transmission so i did the maintenance how ford told me to service it and i need a new transmission? and a spring went loose, and did all that damage to the van transmission ? i'm at there mercy of the dealership and then it 3 weeks to rebuildthe transmission? so they had the car 4 weeks one (month) the dealership is san diego auto collection of mission valley in san diego ca. Intermittent speedometer problem required the replacement of the speed sensor and dropping the transmission to replace the gear that drives the speed sensor with no noticeable transmission problems.appearently, there was a misalignment in the transmission that had to be corrected to function with new speed sensor.the concern is that the correct speed is not measured.30 days after this repair, a dealership has diagnosed the current problem as being the transmission with the fix being a new transmission.the van is less than 5yrs old and has less than 48,000 miles.this appears to be a defective transmission or problem with the previous repair.the current problem was experienced while driving the van on 10/02/99.the van was coming to a stop for a traffic light.while the van was stopped, the engine raced, dropped as though it was going to die , and raced back to where it should be.the rpm gauge normally sits between 1 and .5 while the van is idleing.while at the traffic light the gauge raced above 1, dropped as though it was going to 0, and raced back to where it should be.the concern is that while the traffic light changed to green at the same time the engine raced, i simultaneously released the brake pedal.this caused the tires to squeal, grab, jerk, and thrust the van forward.this could potentially cause the van to be thrust forward into the rear of a vehicle in front of the van.the van would do this at every stop.also, the wife and two small children were stranded in the left turn lane of a very busy intersection and heavily traveled route in the tysons corner area of northern virginia/dc area.this produced a dangerous situation until the wife was able to turn off the ignition, restart the van, place the van in drive, and drive the van home eventually.at the intersection while encountering the problem, the wife pressed the accelerator causing the engine to race, but the van would not move.

When putting the vehicle in the park position, and taking the key out of ignition and getting out of the vehicle, the vehicle had jumped out of gear and the vehicle began rolling forward.this incident has happened twice.

Vehicle gear shift appears to go into park, however the transmission is not really in park, thus causing the vehicle to roll, possibly when no one is inside the vehicle.in addition, this condition can cause the driver to be stranded because the car will not restart due to it not being engaged in the park position.

Gear shift will indicate that vehicle is in park, but will actually be in reverse and roll away.this has happened twice.dealer has not seen vehicle. Consumer states that the two star head screws under the dash on the right side of the steering column backed off from their proper position, allowing the linkage and shifting indicator to move.

In 2000, the left cv boot cracked at 70,000 miles, requiring both the axle and boot to be replaced.now, the right cv boot has cracked at 87,425 miles, requiring the other boot and axle to be replaced.we are very concerned about the safety of this vehicle.we have never had to replace axles on any previous cars at all, and especially not before the odometer reached 100,000 miles.we are concerned that there might be a manufacturing defect causing these cracks.thank goodness we did not have an accident because of them. Each repair came to a costly $295.00, but we had no choice but to pay it.

While driving at 30 mph heard engine rattling noise. Engine quit running and failed to restart. Towed to mechanic who determined crankshaft was broken. Mechanic said he has had 3 other broken crankshafts on same model vehicle with front wheel drive, transversely mounted engine, but no such problems seen when same engine is mounted with driveshaft to rear wheels.

Inmid to late 1995 my mother-in-law purchased this vehicle and later gave the auto to my wife and i. This vehicle has retractable shoulder belts. Several times, for no apparent reason the shoulder belt has quit working. I took the vehicle to babb ford in mid 2000.(june, i believe)on may 27,2001 i returned the auto to babb ford again for the same problem. I showed them my receipt from the year before and stated that i wasn't paying for another inertia switch that had been replaced the summer before.the mechanic"tinkered" with the wiring and found that when he disconnected a wire at the inertia switch, the system worked and it has not faltered since. He and/or the service manager contacted ford/mercuryand explained the situation to them and they were told that the situation could not happen. I'm here to tell you it did. My concern now is wether or not the fuel shut off portion of the inertia switch is funtional or if it is not. Ford/mercury has not gotten back with my dealer to tell them of any new information.

The circumstances of this accident were unusual. Road conditions were clear and dry. No approaching cars in either direction, nothing in the road to cause a problem. I turned the van left from the driveway, which has a raised "hump" at the end, and began heading west on east swon. I was traveling about 15-20 mph, both hands on the wheel and looking straight ahead about half a block to a stop sign at the next corner. The van pulled to the right. I tried to turn the wheel left, without response. The van grazed a utility pole. I applied the brake and kept trying to turn. Immediately past the utility pole was a storm sewer, which the right front tire struck, virtually shearing off the tireand detaching the axle. The van stopped about 30 feet from where it first jumped the curb. Airbag deployed; there was a double "bang" sound during the middle of the accident. The steering was unresponsive during the entire accident. It seems that something happened in the nature of a mechanical failure to cause this accident. Several days prior, the car had been serviced by a reputable mechanic who said we needed a "motor mount"; ours had a stress fracture. He indicated the car was drivable, as the part was due to arrive on wednesday, december 6. I asked the mechanic if he thought we needed this part due to a faulty mounting of a new engine during a recall replacement of our motor approximately 2 years ago. He said that some cars wear motor mounts out quicker due to design, and that corrosion could be a factor. The point we would like to make is this: a serious mechanical failure of some sort occurred to cause this accident. Are there other similar situations to this event where a massive failure of some sort could cause a loss of steering at a fairly low rate of speed and result in a crash ... Something where the car pulls to one side immediately prior to loss of control?we were very fortunate the vehicle was only going at a low rate of speed.please use our info to help others. *a
