As my wife was coming to a stop at a traffic light at a very busy intersection in knoxville, she realized that she had lost some type of power and the tachometer registered a minimal rpm reading.at this point, the vehicle would not respond to any pressure on the accelerator.she was blocking two lanes of traffic and could move neither forward nor backwards.luckily, she was able to obtain assistance quickly from the attendants at a nearby service station.the next day we had the van towed to a mercury dealer.they pinpointed the problem as a cracked crankshaft.through my own research and contacts with local mechanics, i have discovered that this failure was due to a defective part, that there was no reason for a crankshaft to fail on a 5-year-old van with 75,000 miles.another mercury service manager indicated to me that the villager van had a history of crankshaft problems.this was confirmed when i consulted your service bulletins database.there were several service bulletins regarding crankshaft failures in the 93-95 villagers.the bulletins summarized this failure as a "driveability concern."i believe this drastically understates the problem.if my wife had been on one of our local highways, traveling at a higher rate of speed , i believe the consequences of this failure would have been much harsher, possibly even deadly.i would urge you to further investigate this problem with the '94 villager and its repercussions on passenger safety.

Vehicle experiencing problem with exhaust fumes coming intovehicle. Problem is due to broken studs onengine head passenger's side.dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.

While test driving the 94 mercury villager, with only 74000 miles,at around 40 mph vehicle shut down, and lost all power to brakes and steering, with no warning.the mechanic at the dealership insisted that this was a "built-in mechanism"and that this was supposed to happen occasionally to "reset the computer system."of course this is completely false.they are trying to sell this vehicle in extremely unsafe condition and frankly i believe something should be done about it.the dealer, grand auto mart in nd still has the vehicle for sale for nearly $8,000.after reading the other complaints on this site,i know that this is a major repair, and would cost about $4500 to fix.buyer beware!for this dealers info, feel free to contact [email protected]. *nlm

My wife drove the vehicle on that day.according to my wife, she stopped at a traffic light for a while, and when she departed on green light, there was no response with a loud noise. After thatthe engine was still in idle with hesitation. The van was towed to a nearby gas station. Mechanics at that gas station could not find out the problem. 1 day later, the van was towed to a dealer and at this time, everything went dead. Two days later, a mechanic in the dealer service called and reported of broken crankshaft. The dealer asked for $4500 (parts+labor) to replace a remanufactured engine.

The engine shut completely off and the brakes and steering went out. Dealer says engine needs to be replaced.

Engine shut down on 11/21/00 while traveling on interstate at 65mph.auto towed to mercury dealership.we were told we would have to replace the engine at our own expense ($4000).once engine was replaced, we started having other problems.we started to notice the smell of gasoline around the vehicle.the smell was especially bad on the inside when we turned the heat on.the dealership thought they fixed the problem by tightening the fuel line clamps, but the odor returned.the gas smell is still present. The new engine was slow to accelerate.the dealership did a "fix" on this by adjusting the throttle linkage.the vehicle still does not accelerate as it did originally.

For past 3-4 years have had numerous occurrences of power failing and car stalling with no warning.most times occurs while making a right turn, and often times during moist weather, but not exclusively.have worked with a dealer on this many times and have not been able to id cause.(have records).continues to occur randomly which is a real hazard as it has happened with other cars behind me.vehicle has not been in any accidents as yet, and has been properly maintained.simply want to know if there is any knowledge of similiar issues and have they been resolved.

My 1994 mercury villager has 26 cylinder head bolts, one of which apparently broke off spontaneously according to my mechanic.as a result, the broken piece jammed the camshaft, causingit to fracture near the end (where the pin is located).the timing belt remained intact.coincidenatly, this event occurred three days after the villager was repaired by the same mechanic for a failed tensioner that snapped the 5-month-old timing belt.

The car has a smell coming out of exhaust.tt

Why wasn't the 94 villager ever recalled for exhaust studs breaking off? this causes exhaust gas to fill the passenger compartment. I still have the rear manifold leaking. I measured 300 ppm c.o. While the van was idling. I can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars to get it fixed.

Both of these problems appear to be a mfg flaw and are very common.ford is doing nothing to fix.

The car has a smell coming out of exhaust.tt

The exhaust manifold has a bolt that has sheared off. This to me seems as though it is a defect in workmanship and a safety hazard. I was unaware of the problem until a mechanic noticed the bolt broke and brought it to my attention. The exhaust system is the original. This problem could cause exhuast to come into passenger compartment at any given time. The dealership lists no recall on this and say they cannot give me an estimate because they don't know how long it will take to get the broke off bolt out of the engine block. I have talked with other people that have had the same problem. It is the same engine that is in the nissan quest. I think car manufactors' should be accountable for there mistakes. I have been told the cost could be from 500 to 1600 dollars to repair this problem which is clearly poor workmanship in the area of this vehicle. Please investiagte this matter.

This vehicle had seven (7) of twelve (12)exhaust manifold studs shear.i was informed by the queen city service representative, that this condition has been a common occurrence with 1993 and 1994 year model mercury villagers.i was further informed that all twelve (12) studs were replaced with new studs that mercury is now installing in all villagers manufactured subsequent to the 1993 and 1994 year models.the technician at queen city mercury stated that mercury is no longer using the original studs due to the original stud's failure rate.queen city further informed me that they are routinely checking all 1993 and 1994 villagers that come in for any service for signs of the stud failure.i was informed that failing to make this repair could result in carbon monoxide fumes entering the passenger compartment.the repair cost associated with this manifold stud failure was $641.30.ford/mercury denied my request for reimbursement of the repair expense stating that, to date, there had been no mandated recall to correct this problem.i would appreciate nhtsa's review, if in fact, mercury has experienced significant failure rates resulting from defective studs.

Fuel favors entered engine compartment. Dealer originally thought that it happened after refueling, and resealed fuel filler neck at exterior body penetration. However vapors reappeared. There seems to be no correlation between vapors and fuel. They seem to come from exhaust system.

Consumer noticednoise from the exaust manifold. Mechanic told manufacturer used improperly material reason why the manifold broke. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.mr

You can smell gas when i start my car; especially in the cold weather, my car also has smoke coming from the hood; upon inspection from the dealer in maryland they stated my exhaut head had a broke stud which was causing the problem. The problem would not affect the driving of the vehicle; but would cost me $1000.00 to fix. I requested bellevue lincoln mercury investigate a 'clicking' noise coming from the engine compartment.they advised me that the noise was coming from a gasket failure between the exhaust manifolds and the engine heads.the probable cause was a failure the the exhaust manifold studs.this failure allow hot exhaust gases to leak and cause heat damage and possible failure of engine or automotive components.additionally the exhaust gas may be introduced into the passenger compartment possibly asphyxiating the occupants.dealer mechanics and other engine mechanics state that this is a common problem on this year and model of mercury village vans, as well as nissan quest vans.

Broken manifold bolts on our '94 mercury villager. *nlm

Several of the bolts that hold the exhaust manifold onto the engine block have popped off leaving the stem of the bolt embedded in the engine.as a result, dangerous exhaust gases are seeping out into the engine area because the manifold is no longer tightly attached to the engine.in order to fix the problem the bolts must be drilled out.this is a known defect.this has occured in a number of mercury villagers that use this engine.i have personally talked with several mechanics that have indicated it is a continual proplem with this make.it did not take me long to find out that this is not an issolated insident but one that has occured in many of the villager's.

Air conditioner evaporator deodorized due to odor. *sd

Please note that this safety defect involves a sudden and unexpected failure of air condition pipes/hoses.this can cause a potentially life threatening problem to the occupants of the vehicle.the air conditioner is an integral part of the defroster and its failure may and could lead to zero or no visibility very quickly.the air conditioner in many vehicles is a necessity for the health and safety of the operator and passengers.in my situation, my wife has a very serious life threatening medical condition.the lack of air conditioning may exacerbate that situation.i believe that the failure of an integral part of the air conditioning system is not limited to just my vehicle.in fact this is such a common problem that parts are not available anywhere.in fact the dealership can not state when they can approriately fix the car, they state that it could take from 1 month to at least a year for parts. This problem is also prevelent in the nissan quest, the exact same vehicle.

There is a design flaw in the coolant tube.the oem tube is insulated with foam, but the ends are not enclosed.this allows water, road salt and the elements to work between the foam insulation and the metal tube and corrode the tube.it is not a cheap item to replace.the tube itself has a cost of $220+ dollars, not including the labor to replace it and the cost of the replacement freon.the problem is the replacement from the manufacturer has the same design flaw which means it should not last longer than 4 years either. Mercury and ford were contacted and their response was thank you. But your vehicle is out of warranty.

Fuel smell inside vehicle, fuel leaking underneath vehicle, rear driver's side window imploded, back vent window fell out of frame.

There is a gas leak from the main fuel intake line at the top of the engine. It runs down the block and manifold. Not only is there concern for fire but also the odor is very strong and unhealthy in the passenger cabin. This leak appears to be due to poor clamp or hose. I have had it fixed but it has returned. I am unsure of actual start date as i struggled with the gas odor and leakage from the vent hose that was recalled for over 1 year. When i finally got it fixed i noticed the gas smell did not go away, so i was prompted to look elsewhere and that is when i found this main engine fuel leak. Perhaps it was leaking the whole time as the gas odor never dissipated. Therefore i artificially used 4/01/1999 as the date. Actually the previous, and only, owner had noticed the gas smell before i purchased but he also attributed to the fuel tank vent hose (recalled) and his atempts to fix were not successful either.

Brakes squeal - very loudly.i have replaced the front rotors and pads.the rear shoes are brand new.the van has been in the shop on several occasions but they can't figure out what is wrong.the fact that the squeal cannot be made to go away leads me to believe that there is a design flaw.please advise if you have heard of a fix or a recall.

Brake calipers replaced.

Electrical:numerous problems with door locks activation/windshield sprayer front and rear inoperative/interior lighting controls for ventilation inop., radio&cd player operation intermittent at all times and replaced radio but still had problems getting power to the unit on a regular basis; hydraulic brakes: front brake calipers not functioning fully/rear brakes make grinding noises. Exhaust system: check engine light at different intervals due to broken hose between egr valve assembly and intake manifold/o2 sensor replaced due to trouble codes.

Rear brake failures occur when the vehicle is parked at an incline and the parking brake is depressed.releasing of the parking brake with the brake pedal depressed causes one of the rear brake cylinders to extend beyond their normal operational range, resulting in failure of the rear wheel cylinder.this problem has occurred on four separate occasions.procedurally this problem does not occur when the vehicle is not parked on an incline.

Brake booster replaced due to brake pedal going to floor. *dsh

The contact owns a 1994 mercury villager. While driving at an unknown speed, the steering wheel was not aligned properly which made it difficult to drive in a straight line. The contact indicated that the failure progressed with no warning. The failure recurred and the vehicle was towed to a mechanic for further inspection and diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.updated 4/7/15updated 9/15/2017

Having problem with the back heater not working at all. Transmission has a slow shift and will shift hard when down shifting, sterring wheel get hard when temp. Are in the teen,s. Cluck noises when hitting light bumps. Brakes grind when brakes are cold. Radio will loose memory. Heater switch when one 1, makes a ticking noise. Sliding door gets hard to close. Gas tank, have to turn cap slowly so gas air will leak out. Check engine light appears then goes out.

Screw fell out of steering column causing the shifter to show inaccurate readings.

Failure of the steering wheel and column, consumer pulled the steering wheel to the right to prevent an accident and the steering gave way, causing the vehicle to rollover and the driver's side air bag did not deploy.

The power steering pump was replaced two times, the fan for the heater and the firewall was not put in right. Please describe .

The locks will lock all doors by themselves, and i have to repeatedly press the unlock button or hold the unlock button down while getting out or getting my son out.ford has told me there is a technical bulletin for this problem.this problem could mean life or death in an accident.

Power door lock malfuncions, locks every body inside the vehicle.tt

I have gone to the dealership 3 times and thay tell me it will be about 350.00 to look at this and that still may not fix it. The doors just lock by themselves at any random time leaving you locked in or out. Sometimes i must use 2 hand to get out one pushing the lock button open while pulling the door handle while the locking mechamism grinds away.

4 to 5 times a monthautomatic door locks will lock automatically.the manufacturer has not been notified.

The locks once engaged automatically are nearly impossible to open asthe solenoid/motor fights back when trying to open manually.

Crankshaft broke apart immediately behind timing gear.vehicle idling at a stop sign at time of failure.total engine failure./electric locks lock themselves intermittently, without human assistance.must always have key in hand when exiting the vehicle.failures are ongoing and unpredictable.

While drivingthe left front control arm broke, causing the wheel and brake housing to break away from the vehicle, resulting in an accident.

The left lower ball joint failed.nlm

I heard a different noise as i was driving my mini van.i had the tires check to see if there was a knot or something wrong with the tires at geralds.they said the tire was fine.i continued to hear the noise, but nothing was wrong.i was in route to georgetown sc on hwy 17sth.i was traveling aprox. 80 mph. I heard the noise getting louder. I turned the volume down on my radio because i thought it was the car beside me.it was not. I decreased my speed and i noticed that it was my van.i pulled over to see that it was my tire.it came apart.no wires or steel was showing.the tire was still inflated but it was seperating. I continue to drive on it because i was on my way to a furneral.i didn't think about informing anyone because i didn't realize i had these tires until someone reminded me about what happened to my tire in july. I can't see the dot # at this time, but i will get the information and forward this data to you.the other 3 tires are firestone except the one that was exchanged out.( dot number: )

We've had three major blowouts with firestone tires.during the first one, we were going only about 45 mph and they replaced it under road hazard warranty.the second incident occurred on the highway at about 75mph and my husband spun out of control onto the grass median.the tire literally exploded and we had to take the pieces back to firestone.we ended up with a dented and scratched rim.when we complained, firestone basically told me to fix it under road hazard because they said 99% of their product defect complaints came back negative and then i'd be out the price of the tire.if they decided there was no defect, they would not reimburse me for the new tire whereas if i had them replace the tire, i wouldn't have to pay anything.the last blowout occurred in missouri on our vacation.we were out of state and going about 70mph and the tread completely come off.we had it replaced at a walmart, so now we have 3 firestone tires and one goodyear tire.we have 5 cars and our other 4 cars do not have firestone tires and we've never had a single problem with any of them at all.( dot number: tire size: 21570r15 )

Tread separated from tire, causing some loss of control of vehicle.

General tire p205/75r15 experienced tread separation, causing damage to the rear and left side panels and gas opening lid, 2 other tires that were replaced had identical damage as the one that experienced the blowout.

I have already replaced these parts. I feel the manufacturer should reimburse me. No safety defect.

After driving for approximately 15minutes engine check light would come on. After awhile it would go out but it would come back on. Have taken vehicle to private mechanic andit was placed on a tester after being test driven. First time indication wasa water pump and it was replaced. Second time, a ticking had developed, and problemwasthe exhaust, which was leaking. Mechanic noticed 2 studs had melted & broke off inengine head. Needed to be drilled out andreplaced due to incorrect temperment.consumer states the check engine light had been coming on for a year, the replacement of the water pump did not correct the problem, as well as the exhaust, once the bolts were replaced the engine light stopped coming on.
