My daughter was driving my 2000 mercury sable around a curve to the left when the rear of the vehicle began to slide to the left causing her to loose control and strike 2 guard rails,2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction and then head-on into a stone retaining wall. Vehicle was severely damage and my daughter suffered a minor head injury. The airbags did not deploy even after striking the wall head-on. We are concerned that the rear coil springs were defective, rusted and may have cause her to loose control and the rear-end of the vehicle to slide to the left. 1 week prior to vehicle crash/incident, the rear end of the vehicle slid to the left on dry pavement while turning to the right. Vehicle tires were fairly new and in good condition. Please review the 2000 mercury sable for defects in the rear coil springs and the airbag deployment failure.
Airbag trouble light x3 (replaced 2nd time with part from "another car"--stayed on again for short trip afterwards); engine trouble light (fixed--so far); worried about my firestone tires--not recalled so far!
Airbags did not deploy during vehicle accident.
Engine without warning accelerated tremendously causing the car to strike first the curb, then the library wall, causing considerable damage to car and library wall, airbag did not deploy.
Airbag and abs lights on control panel come on intermittently. Happens when consumer usespower windows. Whenbrakes are depressed, alldash lights go dim. Vehicle has not been involved in an accident.
2000 mercury sable with adjustable brake and gas pedals was recalled for spacing issue.told on recall no adjustment needed.had bad crash. After crash told two more times adjustment not needed.this car has a brake pedal that wobbles side to side 7 mm and a gas pedal that wobbles side to side 1 cm.odi in washington told me that as brake and gas pedal unit is brought forward the 3 inch distance for a shorter person the side to side wobble of brake pedal becomes worse causing you to hit the gas.they also said adjustment should have been made on this car.ford refuses to acknowledge problem and to do anything about it.this vehicle is very, very dangerous to drive.
Airbag warning light frequently comes on and then stays on all day. Dealer says car is safe except when warning lights are on, but that is unpredictable. Dealer has repeatedly made repairs but after a few months the airbag light comes on again. I made initial filing under lemon law and ford has made final repair but light still stays on. Took sable in again for diagnostic and dealer got very upset when i would not let them work on it after "final repair" typing "customer refuses safety repair" so they must believe it is not just a light problem but a true safety problem. Can you tell me if there have been failures of sable airbags in accidents or injuries or fatalities associated with year 2000, 2001 or 2002 sable airbags? if you do not know, can you advise me or refer me where to find this information?
Airbag light comes on intermittently , vehicle has not been inspected by dealer.

The passenger side air bag is malfunctioning.i have taken the car to an authorized ford dealer 8 times:5/8/00, 5/24/00, 6/9/00, 6/1/01, 6/5/01, 7/11/01, 8/6/01, and 8/25/01.ford has tightenedconnections,re-soldered connections, or replace wiring five times.the control module has been replaced twice.on 8/6/01 an authorized ford dealer wrote on the work order "ford tech. Assist hotline is aware of concern & advises no repair is available at this time."i have filed for lemon law, and at ford's request took the car to an authorized ford dealer on 8/25/01.on 8/25/01, ford "repaired a loose connection at fuse box."the problem still exists.i am attempting to schedule a lemon law hearing date.this needs to be investigated.ford is not working with me to solve the problem.in ford's investigative report to the texas department of transportation, they did not acknowledge that the car had been seen for an air bag problem.i have copies of all eight visits to dealerships for the air bag malfunctions.
While driving on drum avenue in kensington maryland i was going approximately 25mph when i heard a loud bang and then my passenger side air bag deployed.at the time i had my 11year old grandson and one of his friends in the back seat.apparently my tire blew out and when the rim hit the ground my airbag deployed causing the astronomical expenses.a side air bag should not deploy on a tire blow out and there is no side impact. On thursday, 7/8, i made an appointment to bring our 2000 mercury sable to tomball ford in tomball, texas on the following saturday morning to have the recall work done (they only returned part of the recall letter, but it was regarding a stop lamp switch).to make sure the dealership had plenty of time to complete the work, we dropped our car off friday night, filling out the appropriate paperwork, leaving the keys and all information required in their drop box.we called saturday morning and was told they had "forgotten" to check the drop box until 11:00 so the work wouldn't be completed until 2:00 that afternoon.the recall notice said it would only take about 1/2 day.at 3:50 (10 minutes prior to their closing) we contacted rick, who identified himself as the service manager at tomball ford.he said they "just didn't get to it"and it wouldn't be ready until sometime monday.my husband explained we needed both of our cars on monday and asked if they would supply us with a rental car.it was obviously tomball ford's fault that we would not have a car.rick said no, that this particular recall didn't call for a rental car to be supplied by the dealership.it's people like rick who make this whole thing a pain in the butt.he should have been more than happy to supply us with a free rental car because it was totally their fault that the work didn't get done.i don't think we will ever buy an american made car again.at least the people at the local toyota dealership admit when it's their fault and rectify the problem.it's obvious that tomball ford could care less if they have our current or future business.

Car stalled on 4 separate occasions.it's been to the dealer twice and they replaced some ignition coils second time, however car stalled yet again.twice car was starting from a stop in traffic, twice coming to a stop and getting ready to turn right.dangerous situation when turning as car coasted into lane when i needed to be accelerating.dt

The back brake lights are not working again. (4th time)also, the car will not move out of park after you start the car.i know these two problems are related to the brake switch.this item has been (replaced) two other times.i am putting the powers that be on notice that if i am in a crash because of this safety issue, i am responsible for it.also, there is some sort of electrical problem that will keep the car for starting.

I have a 2000 mercury sable station wagon that occasionally without warning the engine will shut off briefly and the theft light flashes. Frequently it will not crank until you go through multiple actions, off unlocking the doors and pushing the alarm button on the remote. One time i could not get it to crank at all and had to have it towed to the dealer. I have had it to the dealer four times now (it is currently there) and i have spent three hundred dollars on the first three times and the problem still exists.
Immediately upon starting my 2000 mercury sable (car had been off and parked for 4+ hours), there was a loud explosion under the hood.it sounded like a sonic boom (people parked 2 cars away from mine thought someone had hit their car the percussion was so intense).smoke/vapor was coming from under the hood.it was thought that there was a fire under the hood and i ran inside the establishment where i was parked and got a fire extinquisher.after getting the extinguisher, a concerned passerby asked that i open the hood.there was no fire but a lot of vapor.the intake manifold had blown up.there were 2 pieces that we found near the manifold and the manifold looked as if it had been split along its horizontal axis.the felt material underpinning the hood was ripped in several places.i called a ford authorized service center where we have taken several vehicles over the years and they had it towed to their shop.it then had to be taken to a local ford dealer since the service center said they did not "have the proper equipment to fix it". Upon investigation on the internet to see if there were any similar incidents on file, i found an article that was in the journal of the alliance of automotive service providers, aasp by mark giammalvo describing an incident identical to mine.there had been 2 "owner notifications" issued by ford - 00b38 april 2000 and 00b55 in september 2000 that related to a pcm reprogramming that was needed.i did not purchase the vehicle until october 2000.according to the ford dealership who repaired the vehicle one pcm reprogramming had been done in june 2000.the ford dealership did repair the car: "replaced intake manifold & gaskets, updated calibration already set in pcm, no later calibration is available".my greatest concern over this incident is that if the hood had been open at the time the manifold exploded, there could have been serious injury to anyone nearby.
On two occasions on march 18, 2002, and one occasion on march 25, 2002 vehicle failed to start while on a trip from toledo, oh to charlotte, nc.vehicle would not crank, but exhibited no other faults.after a period of about 15 to 20 minutes, vehicle started.after first incident vehicleone march 18 was taken to turnpike ford in marmet, wv.service there could not identify problem.after third incident on march 25 vehicle was taken to astrog ford in parkersburg, wv.service there first reported they were unable to identify problem, but in preparing to return vehicle to me, it failed to start.astorg ford reported to me that the vehicle needed a new pats switch, but they did not have the part.they suggested i proceed to toledo, not turn off the ignition, and take it to local ford dealer.on march 27 i delivered the vehicle to franklin park lincoln mercury and reported the problem.they kept the vehicle until april 4 and reported that "problem is intermit could not verify at this time all system operate as designed."
Electrical short caused connector/wiring to cooling system fan to burn.concerned that an engine fire could have resulted.
Concerning a 2000 mercury sable's daylight always on safety headlights.the lights closely reremble the actual headlights so at night you don't know if your real headlights and tail lights are on.i have found myself driving at night without the real headlights on.thus i had no tail lights on, i was driving with the daylight headlights only until i noticed that the dash lights were off.

Loud explosion which was result of back fire blowing out upper intake manifold. This condition is adressed in ford owner notification 00b38 (affecting 2000 sable and taurus with 3.0l duratec engine) in which ford agreed to reprogram the pcm to prevent this backfire and ruptured inake condition. Program was only open from april 2000 to april 2001. Obviously this car was never reprogrammed due to lack mailing issue or change of vehicle ownership.these vehicles that are unrepaired present a significant safety risk to automotive service personel working in the area when the hood is open.the blast of the plastic intake pieces is of such a violent nature that even the underhood insulation is damaged.believe that these vehicles should all be reprgrammed regardless of date.
I am having problems with it stalling constantly when i have sat at a light i dont javw the money to fix this due to on a fixed income was told it has a problem with the throttle control issue and they said there was a recall on it due this

I drove my mercury sable 2000 today. Just seconds after i got off from a highway to a local road, my filled my car accelerated when i hit the brake. I had to hit the brake hard to stop the car in a traffic light. However, the engine rushed to 4000rpm. I switched to park gear and turned off the ignition. After a few seconds, i turned on the car again but the engine rushed to 4000rmp. Had no idea what happened. Wait for a minute and turned the car on again. Same problem exists. In the park position, i hit the gas pedal gently and the engine running back to normal. Then i was able to drive the car back home (~10miles). It was so scary and have no idea when this problem will come back again.
This sable had the stuck throttle problem recall performed in october 2013. Yesterday, a dangerous acceleration condition occurred. While accelerating from a stop light, the car kept accelerating even after taking all pressure from the accelerator pedal. I entered an on ramp and accelerated to join with traffic. Even after completely removing my foot from the pedal the car kept accelerating to over 75 miles an hour. I attempted to brake, but had to shut off the ignition to pull to the side of the road. I restarted the engine and it immediately went to 5500 rpm and started cutting out (misfiring- i assume was caused by a rev limiter). I shut the engine off again. After two more tries starting, and revving to 5500 rpm, it finally started and idled at 800 rpm. While climbing a hillthe accelerator stuck again, but at 3000 rpm. I again had to shut off the engine in order to stop. When i restarted, it revved to 3000 rpm. I shut it off again and opened the hood. I manually pulled on the throttle cable to insure it was not applying pressure. I then started the engine and it idled at 800 rpm. The recall was performed in october 2013i have the sable at a dealer at present to repair the throttle problem. At no time was cruise control engaged. Had my wife been driving, i'm not sure she would not have had an accident. Turning off the ignition was the only way to prevent engine damage and slow the car to avoid a high speed accident. I just received a call from the dealer. The recall (at a different dealer) was performed incorrectly. The clip was installed incorrectly according to the dealer who now installed and completed the recall correctly!
Subject:2000 mercury sable ls. When starting vehicle when raining vehicle tends to choke out or miss and not have any power. If attempting to drive vehicle will stall out. The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.the contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle continued to accelerate.in addition, the rpm's increased.the manufacturer stated that her vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 02v266000 (service brakes, hydraulic:pedals and linkages).the contact would be responsible for the repair costs.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 120,000.

Exhaust and fuel smell in the passenger compartment on start up and while driving, the smell is so strong you must drive with the window open not to get a headache. Car has been back to dealer twice and still they can not fix the smell.
The vehicle emits an odor/fumesfrom the engine compartment, the dealer has been unable to locate the source of the problem, the consumer test drove another vehicle on the dealer's lot with similar mileage and it emitted the same smell, the fumes easily get into the vehicle through the dash vents or open windows, the second car tested was built in the same plant and the same month as the consumer's vehicle, the vehicle cannot be drive with the windows open or vent/ac on without being overcome by the fumes/smell.nlm

When the gear shifter lever was put into drive from reversevehicle failed to accelerate when the gas pedal was depressed. The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.the vehiclehad the same failures as mentioned in the recall regarding 2000 mercury sables.the only difference was that the rear coil spring failed and punctured the tire while driving at 35 mph.an unusual noise was heard before the tire was punctured.ford stated that nothing could be done because the recall appliedonly to the front coil springs.the service dealer replaced the failed springs with ones from the manufacturer, and stated that the noise was due to the muffler baffle.also, the dealermentioned that fordwasin the process of developing a different type of spring that has not yet been released.the current mileage is 39,798 , and failure mileage was 39,700.the consumer stated that the vehicle was taken to another dealer who then replaced the struts and that solved the problem. Left out of driveway went two blocks parked car front of friends house, two hours later i proceeded to leave.started the car applied my brake pedal and got ready to shift in gear when it didn't move even the button on the side wouldn't go in, turned the car off and called for a towing truck.towing truck came and said that it might be some switch on the brake system because he towed at least 4 that same week for the same problem.also the brakes lights will not come on .this poses as a danger because if a person is driving and you can't take it out of drive the only thing you would be able to do is stop the car with the brakes and keep holding the brake until you get help you can only hold the brakes for so long.

Driving down road in my 2000 mercury sable ,stopped at redlight, tried to pull out,car would only rev up and not move. There were no signs that the transmission was going bad just up and quit pulling.we were.stuck in middle of road ,with cars passing around us. We.was in danger of getting hit. We had 100 miles to drive on freeway to get home. If this had happened then, we surely would have been hit by a passing car. I have researched this a lot and have found this a common problem with these cars.

On 06/26/03 2000 sable parked in friends driveway in park running with a/c on and driver left vehicle. Driver went to front door and then heard a boom. Car went up a slight grade and continued for 15 feet and struck friends new motor home. Owner of motor home opened car door to move vehicle and found car still in park. Owner selected reverse and backed car away from motor home. Metlife auto & home notified. On 06/27/03 this sable was driven and parked in a parking lot and turned off. When driver and 2 passengers returned to car and started car and shifted into reverse, car proceeded forward. Car was shifted back to park, driver sat there for a couple of minutes and shifted again back into reverse and car again went forward. Car was turned off and driver restarted car a few minutes later and shifted into reverse and car went backwards. Car was taken to morris ford in burnt hills, ny. The ford dealership contacted ford's factory hotline and they said they have no reports pertaining to such. Factory hotline said they would pass info up to engineering. Their advise was for the driver to use the parking brake. That's real comforting!!! the technician checked the shifter cable and found okay! the car is still at the ford dealership and the factory has not responded back (07/05/03). The car has also had the brake lights stay on after pedal is released. The brake lights have come on with no one in the car. The car shifter has locked in park and would not release to another position. The car has accelerated while driving with no increase of pressure on gas pedal. Ford motors needs to take responsibility for a problem that they say does not exist when it does exist as evident by the number of reports for both the 2000 sable and the 2000 taurus. When i purchased this 2000 sable used, ford credit offered me an extended warranty of 6 years or 75,000 miles which i accepted. I am beginning to wonder if they don't want to honor the warranty.

(1) i purchased my 2000 mercury sable gs v6 from my father with appx. 38,000 miles on it. My father and i kept it well maintained as required in the manufactures warranty guidelines. He originally bought it new from the mercury dealership in farmington, mi which is now located in dearborn, mi called jack demmer lincoln mercury. When i purchased the car from my father the seatbelts were both working fine. (2)on the mercury sable both seat belt harnesses (seatbelt rotator) locks up preventing you to allow you to put on the seatbelt. Consequences can cause serious injury, or even death.(3) i contacted the dealership. They stated that the car has 64,000 miles on it and is out of the 36,000 mile warranty so they are not obligated to replace the belts. They did offer to replace both seat belts for $200.00 per belt as they said they wouldn't fix them as its a safety issue. The car to this date has not been repaired. I am concerned that this is a problem in other mercury sables and would like it investigated if possible.
Seat belt binds and becomes inoperable repeatedly, reported issue the first time on 10/05/2001; next on 10/15/2001; next on 10/23/2001; again on 9/30/2002; again about 11/01/2002 (not logged in by dealer); and 11/11/2002.dt
Consumer was at traffic stop and vehicle idling, as soon as consumer put foot on accelerator pedal ,consumer heard a loud noise and vehicle took off at high rate speed, crashing into a lamp pole, and causing injuires/ a broken sternum. Seatbelts did not lock up, and frontal airbags did not deploy.
The driver's seat belt would not fully retract back, therefore it was loose on the driver. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.the contact stated that the seat belt in his vehicle locks up and will not pull out.he purchased another seat belt assembly retractor and had it replaced by a mechanic, but the failure is recurring.the ford manufacturer stated that there were no recalls regarding the seat belt retractor.the failure mileage was 154,000.
Front passenger seat belt will not retract.left rear seat belt will not retract.
Driver's side seat belt failed to stay latched properly.consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic replaced the seat belt system.
My complaint is about my rear seat belts, i used the middle rear seat belt from 2003 until it broke in 2004.the middle is where i put my son's car seat. I always made sure it was in right, it moved no more then an inch and i always locked the seat belt. I didn't take the car seat out much so that is why i don't understand how it could break so fast. I had to move my son to a different seat until i could get it fixed, and then the rear seat belt on the passenger side started to act up, when it was time for the seat belt to retract it wouldn't you had you use your fingers and push it in.i have not gotten it fixed yet. I cant afford to and ford wont pay for it. Both times i had ford take a look at the seat belts, and the only thing they did was gave me an estimate to replace the seat belt.my thoughts on this is the seat belt shouldlast longer then the car.

I was in a parking lot of a store, started my car, headed out onto a city street, turned right.all of a sudden my vehicle took off, started speeding up.i stepped on the brake, it slowed the vehicle down a little, but the brake felt like air and didn't feel like it was braking correctly.luckily, i had a green light, went through that, kept braking.the car slowed down a little bit but then would not stop completely, surged a little more;i was able to pull into a parking lot; braked again, my car kept going at slow speed; i pulled on my parking brake, nothing happened.then, i put the car into park, which stopped it.then i pulled out the key.i called the mechanic i use.he sent a tow truck to me.my car is at the mechanics now.
Recall 02s40 did not address my problem.the dealer has inspected the brake pedal and released the vehicle as being "ok".my problem is excessive brake pedal travel (more than 2.5 inches when depressed).when brakes are appllied the pedal level is more than 1/2 inch beyond the gas pedal level.the problem is not a matter of the two pedals. It is a situation of too much brake pedal travel.a shorter strokein the brake system would correct the problem.dt

If brakes are applied abruptly, vehicle skids and rear end (shifts) as if turning around. Dealer is unable to determine cause. Ph
While traveling on the highway the brakes will not hold properly. Causing a grinding noise coming from the left front side wheel. Please furnish additional information.dealer is aware of the problem. Mr
While driving 55 mph applied brakes, and braking distance was longer than usual.engine started racing.consumer put vehicle in neutral to slow down.
Upon braking to a stop, my wife and i each had several incidences ofhitting the brake pedal and gas pedal simoultaneouly causing car to accelerate instead of stopping.the cure is to have the brakes engage at a higher point so that the foot is suffeciently above the gas pedal as is the case with my 1988, bmw 325i.of course, separating the two pedals would also help.fortunately, only one incident caused a minor accident with neglible damage. Aford engineer has reported that all brake operations are normal on my car.it seems to me that design standards should be employed in the location of the brake pedal to the gas pedal. Ford also reported that here has never been a complaint regarding a similar situation.is this true?ford also informed me that there is no "up / down" adustment factor in the relation to when the brakes engage.the car has the adustible gas and brake pedal assembly that adjusts to allow petite drivers to sit further from the steering wheel for air bag deployment safety.this movement could also contribute to the problem because. Unconsciouly, the position of the brake pad my not be in remembered after the brake pads have been moved.
When applying brake at slow speed vehicle surge forward. Consumer applied brake, but vehicle did not slow down. Vehicle hit garage wall. This happened two times. Dealer could not findcause. Vehicle has surged a total of 10 times, always when slowing down. Pedals were not adjustable.

While driving 35 mph consumer applied the brake pedal and the brakes failed, resulting in a collision.upon impact, both frontal air bags failed to deploy.driver and passenger sustained major injuries, and were transported to the hospital.the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection.however, the dealer refused to inspect the vehicle.

On the first occasion i was stopped waiting in line to make a left hand turn, foot on the brake, the car suddenly accele rated as if someone had stomped on the gas pedal.i put both feet on the brake, car still was moving, i put it in park, engine raced so i shut it down.after restarting it returned to normal.the second time it happened, my daughter was driving in stop and go traffic, as she was slowing, with foot on the brake, car again accelerated, the car lurched forward and collided with a vehicle in front of her.she to had to shut down the engine for it to stop.i believe it to be a product failure and have reported it to ford consumer affairs.it appears they have dismissed my claim without investigating it.this car is dangerous.
While driving 50 mph consumer applied the brake pedal and it went to the floor. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the brakes needed to be replaced.*tc

I have been told that all problems with my sable from transmission to air conditioner is only typical for sables. Transmission doesn't shift correctly, brakes pulsate, climate control can'tbe used because of smell inside car. Problem with transmission the dealership told me it was only the way i drive, they say nothing is wrong with car. Am now attemptong to have ford buy back vehicle.

When applying brakes at highway speed, (55+) the brakes shudder and vibrate the steering wheel.took car to stuart powell, ford-mercury, danville, ky. And was told the rotors were surfaced and the brakes were repaired.about 1 1/2 months later the same problem started again in addition to when the brake pedal is pushed it seems hard and doesn't stop unless a lot of pressure is applied.also when putting enough pressure on the pedal to stop, the pedal goes almost to the floor .took the car back to stuart powell ford-mercury and they kept it for one full day, test drove it for 1.2 miles and told me they could not find anything wrong. I believe the brakes on this car need to be repaired before i have a serious accident.
When braking, there is vibration, rotors have been turned once. At this time there is vibration again.. Consumer was informed that new tires were needed, however the vibration remained.
Severe front shudder during braking. This became apparent about 45000 miles and continued to increase over time. Owner preformed own investigation and discovered front rotors badly warped. Owner preformed own maintainence by installing aftermarket new rotors and pads. Owner wishes to indicate that original rotors removed from car appear to have what looks like fracture cracks across surface of ea rotor and unusual patterns and discolors not seen on other cars before. These parts have been kept at owners home for future investigation if requested. Car is now back in service with brakes operating correctly after repairs were completed.
Consumer heard a noise coming from the left rear wheel. The consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they only identified the front coil spring as being a possible problem which was currentlybeing recalled.the vehicle had38,000 miles when the defect occurred.the rotors and wheel bearing were replaced.
Brakes shudder when applied, been cut down once already stopped for about 5000 miles then started again increasing in intensity as mileage climbed, also car will shut off for a moment or two causing loss of all power, and all dash indicator lights to come on, also had to replace brake light switch twice now.

On several occasions, when consumer hits the brake pedal he simultaneously hits the gas pedal, although dealer said it was pedal fade, consumer feels both pedals are too close together due to the fact that his foot is not in the middle of the brake pedal, instead hitting the gas pedal; consumer has to make a conscious effort to move foot to the middle but on rare occasions consumer can still hit the gas pedal but know to move his foot fast.
The brake pedal and accelerator are too close together and almost the same height.so,if your foot is on the right side of the brake pedal, it is very easy to also depress the accelerator at the same time.several times while approaching a stop sign or red light, i depressed both the accelerator and the brake pedal at the same time. It felt as if the accelerator had stuck.
The brake lights and tail lights did not function when the brake pedal was applied. . replaced wire line that connected brake control switch at pedal.
While braking, the consumer discovered the pedals were designed too close together, which caused the consumer to depress the brake/accelerator pedal at the same time, which caused the consumer to have an accident. Vehicle seemed to speed up when the brakes were applied, pressed harder on the brake pedal and the vehicle got even faster, vehicle glanced off the curb and proceeded across the intersection into the opposit curb.resulting in damage.cause of the problem is the brake/gas pedal are too close to each other, also the pedal attachment assembly on these adjustable pedals is such a loose fit that when the brake pedal is depressed, the driver foot can stray to the right end of the pedal and the foot will pick up the gas pedal and the gas pedal will win.
While going over an overpass with ice onroad consumer began to lose control, and went over into a ditch. Later, consumer was told thatbrake pedal bent.consumer felt this pedal should not have bent.

Broken front and rear springs on mercury sable 4 door car. The front springs broke first and was very expensive to repair and if the broken spring had it the tire i would have crashed on the freeway.the rear spring broke last week and did destroy the tire and again my life was threaten by a crash.ford only recognized that they would place spring guards on the front springs to save they responsibility from have front tires destroyed and killing drivers. Ford will not admit they have a problem; i spent one half hour on the phone with them at the corporate office this week. Because my car is older than 5 years, they will not even extend any consideration for the huge repair costs including new tires that were destroyed. I have owned many cars the last forty years and was a licensed master auto mechanic in the state of michigan and also a voc. The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. While driving 35 mph over a bump, the contact heard an abnormal noise underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that both springs had fractured. The mechanic also diagnosed that the brakes and ball joints needed to be replaced. I just bought a 2000 mercury sable, when backing out of the driveway and making a turn, i felt something pop & a spring coil on the drivers side broke.
My mercury sable 2000, (i am the original owner), was taken in for new tires and the technician reported the rear brakes were low and replaced both rear brake drums and cylinders. Upon further inspection he noticed the spring on the rear strut drivers side had fractured. We are not sure when this happened, although we are sure it did not happen at the garage because there was rust between the fracture joints. The spring narrowly missed puncturing the side wall of the tire. I do remember ford had a recall for a shield on the front strut springs and this car was taken to the dealership for this repair. I have seen many references on this site about the defect on the rear struts. Why hasn't anything been done about this? i'm afraid to drive the vehicle with the oem ford struts front and rear. Btw the garage quoted $800.00 to replace the rear struts only.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the entire suspension was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not notified. The failure mileage was unknown. The vin was invalid.
After being parked for approximately 2 months over the winter, i went to inspect the sable, and found a flat tire ( front passenger side), upon further inspection, i found that the coil spring had fractured, shot downward, and punctured the inner sidewall of the tire.the coil is not significantly rusted, and retains almost all of the original protective coating to prevent rust.on a ten year old car, i would think this is normal wear, but i remember that my 2000 sable was recalled for the exact same problem, as was the 2001 model, and i have now found over 200 reports of the same problem in the 2003 sable, and would like to know why a recall was never issued for this model.
Rear coil springs broke....
My 2000 mercury sable has had a history of broken coil springs. Due to the hazardous situation i feel something needs to be done! ford had a recall on the front springs but not the back. My back springs have just been discovered to be broken and i'm extremely concerned about how safe consumers are while driving this car! this spring could easily destroy the tire causing a catastrophic accident evolving everyone on the road! currently it's being fixed as the new springs are on order!
After exiting i-95 within a minute or so i heard a bang from under the driver's side of the car, followed by a clang sound behind me.i immediately stopped and parked the car and searched the roadabout 200 feet behind me.i found a piece of broken spring.i recalledreceiving an extended warranty from ford for this year's sables and shortly thereafter had it replaced , along with the other front spring. The forddealer recommended i replace the struts and bushings, which i did ( these struts and bushings were done at my own cost.).
Noticed loud metalic noises from the front suspension on march 25, took vehicle to dealer on march 26, dealer advises front spring is broken, an extremely dangerous condition.further research reveals that this is a well known inherent manufacturing defect for mercury sableand ford taurus vehicles.manufacturer states that my vehicle is 2 months beyond the volunatary warranty program they put in.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.while driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, the contact heard a loud noise outside of the vehicle.he pulled over to the side of the road and noticed that the front coil springs failed without warning.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection and both front coil springs were replaced.the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension;front springs, coil springs), although the failures were identical.the failure and current mileages were 103,000.
The front driver's side coil spring fractured, dropping the front left side of the car and causing it to veer to the left.the end of the broken spring also pierced the inside sidewall of the almost new michelin tire and instantly deflated it.[xxx] suffered sprained wrists and a sprained back from the sudden loss of control of the 2000 mercury sable gs wagon.if the vehicle had been moving at a higher speed or on an interstate road, serious injury and severe damage would have occurred.the spring failure and damage was reported to ford's customer relations center, heather nabb, ford supervisor.this problem has already resulted in recall 04s17.i was never notified by ford on this recall and i have owned the car since it was purchased new in 2001.it has always been registered in nh.the ford crc is refusing to do anything to fix and repair the damage caused by this front coil spring failure!the car was first registered and driven in march of 2001 and the original nh title is dated april 4, 2001.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Front coil spring failed.
Sudden failure of left front suspension due to coil spring failure on 2000 mercury sable. Repairs 680.00 . I understand, per nhtsa peo4044 that ford extended the warranty on these vehicles to 150k miles or 10 years. I am not the original owner.can ford reimburse me for these repairs.
2000 mercury sable coil spring broke front passenger side. Normal driving, broke while driving, lost control, nearly crashed. Repaired at local service station.
My 2000 sable auto lightswitch wont work wanting to know if there is a recall on this part?
I own a 2000 mercury sable. I went to my mechanic to have my tie rods replaced. Upon inspection my mechanic foundmy right front coils spring broken. He also stated the coil had been broken for some time due to the amount of rust found at the break. I have installed kyb struts installed.
Updated 06/09/07
While driving 25 mph left front coil spring failed, causingleft front tire to puncture. Vehicle was unable to move. Vehiclewas towed todealer for analysis, andmechanicdetermined that the struts and coil springs needed to be replaced due to worn out parts. *la
My 2000 mercury sable ls premium blew out the left front tire. At the moment i put the car in reverse to exit my driveway.my husband proceeded to remove the flat tire and install the mini-spare when he discovered the suspension strut coil spring had broken and penetrated the tire sidewall.i had the car towed to our mercury dealer in essex, vermont where new struts/coil springs were installed plus a new tire.this spring failure could havehad fatal consequences if it would have happened at highway speeds. The coil spring was obviously defective due to a manufacturing/design flaw.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. The current and failure mileage was 102,000. Thecontactdrove the vehicle to the dealer for the coil spring recall repair, and the dealer stated that the shocks needed to be replaced. The dealer advised the contact of the fee to remove and install the shocks since she didn't wantthem repaired. Recall 04v332000 concerning front coil springs. Consumer received this recall notice since october 2004,anddealer kept telling the consumer that they did not receive any information concerning this recall.
Dt:car was parked and upon starting engine there was loud noise like a bang.discovered tire was flat.consumer's son in law changed the tire and discovered the front coil spring had failed and caused tire to "explode".this occurred on the front driver's side.took to a service dealer, midas who checked tires and notedboth the rear coil springs were defective on both sides also causing wear to the tires.midas replaced all coil springs on vehicle as well as new tires.consumer is concerned that she was not notified of the recall that her daughter informed her about on the front coil springs. (no nhtsa recall camp. Id number to reference this recall at this time.}the vehicle has been repaired but consumer was not notified about recall until afterwards.the vehicle was repaired by midas and consumer paid $1,100.
Consumer received ford recall04s17in august 2004,which stated the part would be availablein december. However, the parts were still not in, and the consumer wasconcerned.......
Front springs where identified as a possibility of breaking and was notified by ford, the springs did break penetrating into the tire.springs where replaced by manufacturer.fortunately this happened at a low speed not causing an accident when the tire blew out from the spring entering the tire.five months later, a rear spring has broken and again was forced toward the tire, this time not penetrating it, but creating a deep gouge in the tire.car is now in dealer shop for repair and replacement of spring, strut, and tire.ford not aware of problem with rear springs so cost of repair will be at owners expense.i have requested that the ford service department return all parts to me after replacement.it was of the opinion of the service department that the car was not safe to drive until parts were orderedand replaced.concern now is the integrity of the other rear spring.
The manufacturer refuses to replace the recalled coil springs unless they break.*sc
I received a notice of recall on my 2000 mercury sable. The recall is for the front coil springs which could potentially fracture and puncture a tire resulting in a crash without warning. This is recall number 04s17. I received the recall notice on 8/9/04. The correction for this defect is to install protective shields on the vehicle to protect the tires. The effective date of the recall is december 2004. Ford/mercury indicates that they are unable to correct this defect until december 2004. In the meantime, owners driving these vehicles are risk if a coil spring(s)should fracture and puncture one of the tires while driving at highway speed. This could result in a potentially fatal crash. Why is ford/mercury putting it's customers at risk? the nhtsa logo says "people saving people". Why is the nhtsa permitting ford/mercury to delay correcting this defect for four months and putting so many lives at risk? the same type of defect occurred in 92-93 mercurys and in my 1992 ford taurus.mr. Grub called the vehicle safety hotline dec-13-2004, stating the the dealership is unable to identify when parts will be available.the manufacturer is apologetic, but still unable to address the dealer having no parts as stated on the letter for december 2004.he received the recall letter in august 2004.
Front driver side suspension coil spring broke at 49,000 miles.tip of failed spring punctured tire side wall.fortunately the car was parked at the time. Vehicle could not be operated due to coil spring interference with wheel well path of replacement tire.
Front left spring snapped on car whil;e driving.
While drivingat 40 mph the consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front of the vehicle.after driving a half mile the consumer heard the noise, and smelled burning rubber.the consumer drove the vehicle to the dealership, and the mechanic determined that the left coil spring on the driver's sidebroke.(11/23/05)*sc
My car was sitting in the garage, andwhen i put it in reverse to go to my drs, a loud bang happened, leftfront side of car went down,i thought it was a flat tire, but upon inspection by the garage, i was informed that the coil spring had let loose and flew thru the tire, flattening it!. This is unacceptable to me, as my car is a 2000 mercury sable, it has only 14,565 miles!!. Also , the dealership, sherman ford, westfield,ny, i was treated as i was dirt!, to the extent, my bill was made out to a person with a "different" first name!, and they refused to change it, but they sure were fast enough to grab my "credit card"!!!. I then asked ford, mercury division(1-800) number , if there was any way to recoup any of my money, as i am a 83 yr. Old senior,on social security, and they told me they would contact the "service manager, he in turn was to contact the "area rep, yesterday, i was told, point blank,"forget it"!!!i have owned fords & mercury's all my life, my 1st car was a 1937 ford convertible, but after this type of treatment, i never again will buy any of fords or mercury cars!.*la
This vehicle is used mostly around town and is well taken care of including frequent washings.there was absolutley no warning of any type prior to failure.the spring on the driver's side front strut broke, and a jagged portion lodged into the sidewall of the tire, completley destroying it. The side of the car dropped considerably.this all occured while the car was at rest in my garage.the car has low mi. And no rust, this includes the spring.mercury refered me to a dealer to have the springs replaced, noting that their covered to 150,000mi.i was told to submit a reciept for possible re-imbursement for the damaged tire and towing. (the car was undriveable)i kept a piece of the spring that broke off.i'm no metalurgist, but this appears to be a very dangerous failure of the spring, im thankful in my instance no one was hurt.
Nhtsa recall campaign04v332000 concerning front coil spring. No parts were available.
I have a 2000 mercury sable in which a safety recall notice (04s17) was issued. A week before the safety recall was issued for the front springs a rear spring of mine had snapped, causing a deep groove on the inner wall of the rear tire. I had to have both rear springs replaced as well as a brand new tire. I was told by ford in june of 2004 that i would be reimbursed for the parts, labor, and replacement tire. As part of the safety recall instead of replacing the faulty springs they are installing "protective spring shields". This is now march of 2005 and i still have not been able to get the "protective spring shields" installed because of lack of availablity, and ford is now telling me that they will not reimburse me for the rear springs, which are obviously as defective as the front.
Dt:2000 mercury sable.the consumerstated the front coil busted and punctured atire. The consumerwas driving home from workwhen this occurred. This has never happened before.the consumer already had vehicle repaired.the consumertook vehicle to repair shop, they told her it was the front coil that busted and punctured the tire. This made it very difficult to drive the car.
The front spring broke. The dealer stated parts were not available, due to a nation wide back order.
While driving at a slow rate of speed the driver side coil spring broke, causingthe front end of the car to drop onto the road surface. The spring rubbed the inside of the left front tire. The car needed to be towed since it was undrivable.
Consumer received, nhtsa recall 04v332000 regarding coil spring. Dealership still does not havetheparts available to conductrecall repairs.floor manager indicated to the consumer not to call until december when they expect the partsto arrive.the manufacturer will only replaced the faulty coil springs if they break.for now they plan to install protective shields around the springs to keep road salts off them and to prevent them from puncturing a tire if it breaks.
While driving 8 mph turning a corner, the left front coil spring failed and punctured the tire.this occurred one week prior to the consumer receiving the recall letter for the coil spring from the manufacturer. Dt: got recall noticelast august on guard springs on front of car,and it is now may and he can't get anyone to fix his car. Dealer keeps telling him they do not have the parts yet. Called manufacturer and they did not offer any help either.
We were notified of the recall on the front springs of the 2000 mercury sable in august of 2004. We went to the garage to ask what we should do. The garage said they would call when the parts were made and when to come in for replacement of the springs. We were never called to bring the car in. On january 23, 2005 while backing out of the garage the front spring exploded with such a force it blew out the front tire. The car was then towed to the ford garage where it was repaired. They put new springs on the front of the vehicle and replaced the tire at no cost. While in the garage they found a rear spring that was broken. The service manager contacted ford motor company to see if it could be repaired at no cost also. Ford said no because there was no recall on the rear springs. We had to pay for the rear springs. We feel at the very least the cost of the rear springs should be paid for by ford motor company. If we had been drivingdown the highway instead of backing out of the garage it would have been disastrous since the tire actually blew apart. I would appreciate your help in at the very least forcing ford motor company to pay for the total spring replacement.thanks.

-the contact received a recall letter for her 2000 mercury sable.the recall letter, campaign number # 04v332000 is related to the front suspension for coil springs.while driving 45 miles per hour on january 15, 2007, the contact stated that the back rear driver side tire failed.the contact took the vehicle to a tire repair shop to have it replaced and the mechanic informed the contact that the coil spring punctured the tire.the mechanic also stated that the passenger rear tire interior sidewall was tearing due to contact with the coil spring .the tire company didn't recommend her driving the vehicle to the dealership because of the condition of the passenger rear tire. The contact called the ford manufacturer and told them about the front coil spring recall and that the rear coil spring should not have broken.the manufacturer explained to the contact that there would be no reimbursement for the repairs.the manufacturer told the contact if there was a future recall for the rear springs she should keep all repair orders for future reimbursement.

My 200 sable was in the garage at 9:30 pm on saturday and my wife and i heard a bang. I thought some one was trying to break into my home so i went outside and looked around, nothing was wrong. On sunday morning my wife went to back the car out of our garage and felt a little resistance so she stepped a little more on the gas and a big bang happened, my neighbor was outside and came over thinking something happened to one of us in the garage.we looked and found the front drivers side coil spring had gone into the front tire.we were unable to move the car due to the coil spring inside the tire.on monday i had the car towed to the garage where i have the repair work done on my vehicles. The tow truck had to drag the car out of my garage ripping the tire open like a can opener, leaving a long black mark in the garage.the mechanic told me that ford motor company has had recalls on the springs and we were lucky that no one was driving the car at the time the spring broke. I had to rent a car for 3 days, buy new front tires and springs, at a cost of over $500.00.in october i received a recall in the mail for the spring recall. I have been calling ford people getting a run around for reimbursement of my costs due to the recall. Everyone i talk to says it is the others responsibility to say if i get reimbursed or not. I have gone through the proper channels and i am still being denied payment.the ford rep is saying i will not be paid because i had 4 letters about this recall and i did not take the car to a ford dealer to be fixed.my wife and i do not recall any letters from ford in regards to this recall.the last time i had the car into a ford dealer was in 2004 for a brake light recall. I was also told that i have a 5 year 150,000 mile warranty on this vehicle.i would like help or suggestions on getting my refund for fords irresponsibility of putting bad parts on vehicles.

I just paid $700.00 to replace a broken front spring that punctured(exploded) the inside sidewall of my tire in two places...while my car wasparked at my office.i feel very fortunate to have not been driving the car at the time of thespring failure.i can only image the potential damage to my car, myself andothers nearby if this spring had failed when the car was being driven.i strongly feel this spring failure is not a typical owner maintenance cost.it is clearly a manufacturer/part failure and i requested the cost of thisrepair to be paid by the manufacturer.additionally, i stronglyrecommended the manufacturer consider a recall of this part for the safety of its customers.ford motor company responded only that the car is out of warranty.the representative for ford stated this part failure was a owner maintenance issue not a safety concern.i strongly disagree.please respond.
Vehicle was parked in the driveway consumer heard a noise.upon inspection the consumer noticed that driver's side front coil spring broke in two.the broken coil spring penetrated the tire which caused it to go flat.
Event leading up to failure:normal driving conditions (38,000 miles)failure:suspension--linkage becomes loose prematurelyand rattles.handling becomes loose presenting a safety hazard.what was done to correct failure: 1 car had linkage replaced.1 car is still in need of repair
I currently own a 2000 mercury sable with 45,000 miles. I replaced the front coil springs around 28-30 thousand miles because of a breakage, in which the dealer is taking care of getting those reimbursed, because there was a recall on those. On 19 may 2008 got in the car to go to sunday breakfast as i put it in reverse & started backing up heard a noise, just thought it was the breaks since it wasn't driven for a few days. Got about half way there & smelled something nasty wasn't sure what it was, got turned around to head back home & pow! the back drivers side rear tire blows out. In changing out the tire to the spare i looked & the coil spring was broke & wore a fine groove in the back of the tire which is what stunk & punctured it. Finally got back to the house & looked around where the car was parked & found the piece of coil spring that broke off when i started backing it up to leave. In looking at the break it was clean but had rust streaks running into the breakage area. If there was a recall for the front coil springs for possible breakage in which it did, would lead me to think that there is a defect with the metal they are made of if i replaced the front at 28-30,000 miles for the same breakage. Now, it has 45,000 miles which is well under what it should have for that year, i have to replace the rear ones. Plus, i not only have to replace the coil springs in the rear, but also have to replace a tire & get another vehicle for the time that this one is down. I would appreciate your attention to this matter. Thank you.
The car was being driven as normal when the rear end started to sag. Once we inspected the problem we realized both rear strut springs were broken at about the same place. After investigating we found the front springs were serviced under a recall but rears weren't covered even though they were prone to the same breakage. I am going to pay to have repairs done.
Tire wear and sagging rear end, took car to tire shop for new tires and tire alignment.mechanic stated both rear coil springs were broken and wheel alignment could not be completed until repaired.
1. Rear of car very saggy 2. Rear spring on 2000 mercury sable broken piece fell out3. New springs purchased, kept broken one.
Noticed rattle sound going over bumps for about 6 months.could not figure out where it was coming from.saw a piece of coil spring about 5" long on the garage floor.ok car to dealer and was told both rear coil springs were broken.dealer making repairs broke a bolt and had to order a new knuckle casting for the left side.was going to be $491 to repair, now it will be $180 more.
Rear coil spring broke and almost caused me to have an accident on the highway.
This vehicle was taken to a tire store/auto repair shop for evaluation of excessive tire wear, and sagging rear suspension. Mechanic found both rear springs broken in about the same spots while examining the underside of the vehicle. This vehicle had already been repaired under recall 3 years ago due to broken front springs. Owner already aware that rear springs are not included in that recall or subject to recall of their own. Springs and worn struts replaced, along with new tires installed. Cost of new springs and labor alone $250. Owner informed that premature tire wear (wear bars showing and inner side wall wear at 26,000 miles on 40,000 mile warranty tires) was attributed to broken springs which rendered vehicle out of alignment, thus voiding warranty on tires. Springs were not broken when the tires were first installed. This required additional expenditure to replace tires that should have not been so badly worn in 2 years time. Total expenditure to replace tires, struts and springs $900.

Rear coil springs broken on both sides, 2000 mercury sable.was driving the car, turned into a driveway and heard a loud noise, like a joint popping.rear end of vehicle sags on both sides and popping noise occurs every time the vehicle makes a turn.going to mechanic for replacement of coil springs and struts, estimated cost with labor $400+.

Car had sounded creaky in the back - had the car looked at, but nothing was found. Right rear spring broke and fell off the shock - puncturing the tire. The car had to be towed, the spring and tire both needed to be replaced.

Diagnostic from dealer; right rear spring broken; tire bruised sidewall (tires were just installed on 10/21/05).replace both rear springs and replace both rear stabilizer links.had to have the car towed on a flat bed to the dealer to have fixed.had to have front springs fixed (7/25/05) as they broke also.
In april 2005, we had our mercury sable inspected as required in pennsylvania.at that time our mechanic found the rear spring broken on our car.we had to have the rear springs replace by a mercury dealer.it was extremely expensive.when asking if this had happened before of course we were told no.also the springs that were put on our car are noisy and we have lost our quiet riding car.
I took the car into service for a routine brake check and a problem with both rear tires leaking air and discovered that both rear springs had fractured. The passenger side spring fracture was so severe that it left a 2 inch sharp projectile against the tire. I replaced both springs and tires.
2000 mercury sable. The right rear spring failed and punctured the right rear tire.
The dealer said that hewill put front shields around the front springs because the spring breaks and punches the front tire. Consumer complainedthat the rear spring broke and punched the rear tire. Dealer said there was no coverage.
Shortly after recall was completed for front spring shields i noticed the right rear suspension sagging.took it to the local ford dealer which discovered that the right rear spring was broken.car is lightly driven, no towing, and has only 80,000 miles.dealer is recommending replacement of both rear springs at my expense ($380).after reading other consumer complaints with sable springs, seems to me the car was manufactured with defective springs.

Consumer requesting reimbursement for broken rear spring and new tire installed on 2000 mercury sable.the mechanic indicated that both springs had cracks in them.
Dt: the problem began on 6/16/05. In february there was a recall on the coil springs, and it was repaired. It wasthe front coil springs. As owner was entering the vehicle, she noticed that there was a pop, then upon entering the garage a rubbing feeling coming from the right rear tire, and was making a growling sound. Upon inspection the tire had shredded due to the coil spring busting. The car will be taken to the dealerto be repaired at owner's expense.dealer replaced both front springs and sway bar links and replaced two rear tires.
I was driving down the highway when i heard a loud bang, then a second bang.both rear coil springs busted. I have noticed that this is a common problem with these springs on the sables etc.... Why is it there is a recall for protective devices to keep the front springs from hitting the tires and not the rear. The rear springs are breaking at a higher rate than the front and is more dangerous ..a person can steer a front tire blow out, but most cannot steer a rear tire blow out... This is a serious issue and needs to be addressed.
After noticing that rear left tire was flat consumer drove the vehicle to the repair shop, andmechanic determined that both rear coil springsbroke.dealer was not notified.the result of the tire being flat was because the sharp edges of the coil spring cut the rubber on the inside of the tire. Consumer aware of the fact there is a recall for the front coil spring and disappointed that there not a recall for the rearfor the same problem.
- the contact was driving the2000 mercury sable with 84654 failure mileage out of the driveway andhe heard a popping sound and decided not to proceed. On 3/11/07 the contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the coil springfractured , and there was a huge gash in the inner tire.the vehicle had not been repaired.
I pulled out of my driveway and heard a loud blow. Not to my suprise another issue with my car. My left rear tire was sliced on the inside all the way aroundfrom the broken rear coil spring. I am glad i wasn't on the tollway with my three children. Will save parts and will not fix due to paying more for the parts than the car is worth.
My 2000 mercury sable leftrear coil spring broke, and damaged my strut also. I was very lucky as the tire was not damaged. I had to rush the car to monroe to fix it asap. Cost me $800. I would like ford to recall this part and pay owners who have already fixed it on their own expense. I believe odi has a open case on this pe05-054. The spring was broken when the dealer sold me to car, but never informed me. When i called them the general manager wanted me to show him but i was not going to drive 30 miles and put my life and others at risk. Very disappointed with nick mayer lincoln mercury.
I have a 2000 mercury sable with 45,500 miles.i took the car in to a tire store for new tires when the mechanic found a broken coil spring on the rear suspension and the broken coil end was rubbing against the tire.they said the tire was probably minutes away from failure and there was a groove worn where it was rubbing.i know there was an issue with the front coil springs breaking because i had the so called ford fix completed which ment installing a shield to prevent the spring from blowing out the front tires.now it seems there is a problem with the rear springs having the same failure mode.this could be a serious problem at freeway speeds.
Car was in with my mechanic for yearly safety/emissions inspection. My mechanic found that a rear coil spring was broken and needed to be replaced for vehicle to pass inspection.
While driving 25 mphthe rear driver side coil spring broke. As a result, the tire was punctured. The cause has yet tobe determined.*sc

Noise in rear, worse when turning right and braking. Problem was identified to be broken rear coil springs and they were replaced.it appears under investigation # peo5054 that a number complaints have been reported with this same problem on the 2000 mercury sables. We would like reimbursement of our $374.28 repair bill for replacement of this defective part and labor incurredrepair date 1/7/05.
(1) i own a mercury sable, 4 dr. Sedan [xxx] with approximately 35,550 miles on it. Last week, 06/03/05) with no obvious causation (i.e. Did not run over a huge pothole or rock/curb), i began to hear a rubbing noise from the rear wheel - it sounded a bit like a brake shoe dragging or a tree branch stuck in the well rubbing the tire. On immediate roadside inspection, i could not see any obvious problem. (2) later when i removed the wheel i determined that the rear coil spring had broken or slipped down over the lower retaining cup and a sharp end of the coil was protruding out from under the retaining cup and it was cutting a neat groove in the sidewall of my tire. The tire had not yet lost pressure but would have in a very few miles with potentially disastrous consequences.(3) i contacted the customer service line for ford motor co. On 06/06/05 and 06/07/05 and spoke to a representative and a supervisor and they required that i have the car inspected by a dealership which i did.after having the dealership verify the problem (fractured right rear coil spring) they refused to offer me any assistance in the repairs and would say only that the recall (2000 mercury sable gs nhtsa recall id number: 04v332000 recall date: jul 15, 2004 component: suspension:front:springs:coil springs) covered only the front springs and that the vehicle is unsafe to operate without repairs.i am taking the vehicle to my local technician for replacement of both springs with non-ford motor company, after market parts.i will have them retain the old parts and will be pleased to make these available to you for inspection.updated 07/27/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
I would like to add my name to those who have experienced breaking of the rear coil springs on the 2000 sable.i see there are a number of other complaints, but do not see where there has been any recall on those.

I got a flat tire in the am and had it changed to the donut so i could get to where i purchased the tires for the warranty to get me a new tire. I left the shop and within 1 mile the new tire blew out also. Come to find out the drivers side spring had broke and was rubbing against the inside of the tire causing it to blow out. I then had both rear springs replaced along with the struts.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. The contact stated that after having the vehicle serviced, the mechanic informed him that the rear coil springs had fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 99,100.
My 200 sable had the rear springs go out on it.my mechanic found this out when he was performing a tire rotation.my springs were totally separated/broken. Thank goodness that he was diligent with this or else it could have caused an accident.
Put car in reverse andheard a loud bang. Thought thathit something, but whenlookingdidn't see anything wrong.thenstarted hearing a noise in rear passenger side wheel. Drove car to service department, andthey showed her the broken coil and the inside of tire that had been gouged out down to the steel belt. Had to have the coil replaced on both wheels because the other side was about to snap also. Had to buy a new tire to replace the ruined one.

After coming to a stop at an intersection, i proceeded to make a left turn.while completing the turn, i heard a loud thump in the rear of the car.i immediately stopped and examined the outside of the car and noticed that the rear wheel wells were nearly rubbing on the tires.both rear coil springs had broken at the first coil.after 3 days at the dealership, the springs were replaced at my expense.at the break, the entire cross-sectional area of one spring and one quarter of the cross-sectional area of the other are rusted.i have the springs.

Ford taurus/mercury sable rear coil springs.although, not under recall, the rear springs appear just as susceptible to failure as the front springs which are under recall.on 2/23/07 the coil springs failed.this was within 3 months of front coil spring failure.the vehicle is a 2000 mercury sable with only 59,000 miles.my brother in law is the service manager of the local ford dealership and said "i'm surprised we haven't seen a recall on the rear springs too.we have had about three of these in the last month."this is a service manager with a four year degree in auto tech and 30+ years of experience.the problem was discovered during routine maintenance.during this visit to the dealership the auto tech had to twist the spring into a position so not to puncture the tire until another appointment could be made to replace the springs.in this case i paid more than $450 to make the repair.based on all the internet discussion on taurus/sable rear spring failure it is a problem worthy of a recall. *8jb
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. While the contact was having his vehicle serviced, he was informed that the driver side rear and front coil springs were broken. I am the owner of a 2000 sable sedan vin [xxx].on april 7, 2006 the left rear strut spring broke while backing out of my garage. ( a 2" difference in height between the garage floor and the driveway)my inspection revealed a rubbing noise caused by the broken spring coil gouging into the tire!!fortunately the vehicle was only driven about 100 ft and the tire was only slightly scraped.imagine what could have happened on the highway!!the vehicle was repaired at hines park lincoln mercury on 4/10/06 at a cost of $413.38.i believe a customer reimbursement action should be the minimum and a recall of the affected springs might be appropriate. The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.while the tires were being changed by a mechanic, he noticed that the coil springs on the rear driver and passenger side failed.there is a recall on the same year, make, and model vehicles, but it pertained to the front tires.the contact was informed not to drive the vehicle.he feels that the vehicle is unsafe because the rear is lower and makes the vehicle drive unsteadily.the current and failure mileages were 60,000.updated 03-27-09 updated 04/01/09.
Dt*: the contact stated while traveling between 10-45 mph, there was a dragging noise coming from the rear end.the vehicle was taken to the dealership where it was determined the passenger side rear coil spring fractured.this caused an eighth of an inch groove in the tire.the manufacturer was alerted.
2000 mercury sable, 62,900 miles, mechanic found that a rear coil spring was broken and recommended that i replace both springs and strut assemblies. He stated that it was a safety issue since the spring could puncture the tire. Repair completed at a cost of $912.00, ford only covers the front springs, but many people have complained to ford that the rear springs are failing as well causing safety concerns.
I took by vehicle to a tire retailer to have all four tires replaced. When the mechanic removed the wheels he found the left rear coil spring had fractured in the first active coil above the lower spring seat. The fractured end of the coil spring remained captured in the lower coil spring seat so that there is no contact (yet) between the tire and the fractured coil spring. The nature of the fracture is such that corrosion is deemed the source of failure.the service center manager referred me to by local vehicle dealership. In fact, the service manager told me mine was the "third coil spring failure in the past month" that he'd seen on 2000 ford taurus/mercury sables, one of them from his own fleet!i understand there is an existing recall campaign, manufacturer recall number 04v332000 , describing defective front coil springs for this vehicle. The failure mode described in the recall and in nhtsa investigation pe 04-044 is the same mode of failure described in this complaint for the rear coil springs.to the best of my knowledge though, there has not yet been any recall issued to address the defective rear coil spings of this vehicle.as i write this i am attempting to arrange a service appointment with my lincoln-mercury dealer to have the all the car's coil springs replaced, hopefully under warranty.at the very least i recommend nhtsa re-open investigation pe 04-044 and examine rear coil spring failure for the same vehicles (1999-2000 ford taurus/mercury sable). Consequences for rear coil spring failure are the same as for front coil spring failure, described in recall 04v332000: "tire may rupture resulting in a rapid air loss, which could result in a crash."don't hesitate to contact me should you need additional information.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.the contact had to inflate the rear tires daily.the dealer stated that thefailure was due to the coil springs corroding and puncturing the tires.the rear coil springs and the tires were replaced.the rear coil spring failure was similar to one mentioned in recall#04v332000, suspension:front suspension:front:springs:coil springs. Update 4/23/07
Re: campaign #04v332000 (ford recall #04517front coil springs were noted as defective, shields installed.one spring on front broke 4 months later and both front were replaced.the next week one rear spring broke.i was told this was not covered by the recall.what exactly is the difference between the front and rear springs, both are obviously defective.why is only the front covered?manufacturer customer service rep. Did not prvide any real answer to my problem.i want the rear springs considered ass part of this recall.
Rear passenger side coil spring broke while driving and punctured the rear passenger side tire. This occurred due to the same defect as described in the front coil spring recall 04v332000. The rear coil spring and tire were replaced.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 35 mph the driver smelled smoke.upon turning into the driveway at 2 mph the driver's side rear tire blew out.after putting the spare tire on the vehicle was driven to an independent tire shop where it was determined the rear springs punctured the tire after it fractured. The contact was advised by a company representative that there was a recallfor the front springs fracturing, but there was nothingfor the rear springs. They replaced the rear coil springs at the consumer's expense. Updated 05/30/06.
On 12/15/2005, i was driving my two kids to school in my 2000 mercury sable when my left rear tire (only 5 months old) blew out.i swerved and came to rest on a grassy median.my kids and i were pretty shaken up but i managed to compose myself to get out and change the tire.as cars drove relatively close to me, i managed to get the spare on and noticed that my tire had a groove carved on the inside with a deep puncture.i searched to see what had caused this and noticed that the coil spring was broken the sharp broken edge protruded out.luckily this did not interfere with the small spare tire.i have called my dealer (reedman/toll) and they told me there was no recall on the rear springs and that it would be a few days before they could get the parts to make the repair.i am currently shopping around to get the best price (so far $505.00 to replace both rear springs)i have just researched the nhtsa site and was appalled to see the number of similar complaints that have been filed and ford's unwillingness to correct the problem at their cost.will it take a death or two before a recall will be made to correct this?i noticed that a formal nhtsa investigation was underway as of october 2005 on the rear coil spring fractures based on 131 complaints but have not been able to find the outcome ofstudy.is it ongoing or has a conclusion been reached? i will save my old parts.
We were on a trip on september 20, 2000 on a northern california highway traveling about 58 mph when the left rear tire blew out.the car had about 1200 miles on it at that time.a tow truck arrived and the operator changed the tire and stated that the tire was unrepairable due to sidewall failure.we drove to the les schwab tire dealer in burney. Ca.they agreed the tire was unrepairable and sold us a replacement tire for $84.the tire dealer told us to go back where we bought the car to get reimbursed for the cost of the new tire.the lithia motors service department took possession of the defective tire, ordered and eventually replaced it with one of the same brand and size, and stated they would reimburse us for the cost of the les schwab tire.i asked for all the tires to be replaced since i was afraid another tire would fail.they said there were no recalls for that tire and they would not replace any other tires. The original equipment tires offer poor performance, especially in the rain. The car was so bad in the rain that my wife refused to drive the car. The oe tires have a treadwear rating of 520. I am afraid that the rubber is so hard (which will give long life) that grip was sacrificed. I changed the tires to continental contitouring contact ch95 which have a treadwear rating of 360. These tires are also original equipment on bmw, mercedes, volvo, audi among others. The car is much improved. Wet performance is much, much better and dry performance is improved also. My wife now feels safe driving the car. I don't know if this is really a defect, but i wanted you to know. Thanks.( dot number: tire size: p215/60r16 )

After several attempts to get power windows repaired i have finally been somewhat satisfied, although i still experience some sticking and annoying wind noise. I did ask ruston ford, lincoln, mercury in ruston, la when i had the windows repaired about the front bumper paint peeling/flaking and was told that it was not covered under warranty and there were no recalls on the problem. I recently searched several auto repair and supply stores for some type of touch up paint and were told by several reputable sales people that they had seen several customers like myself with the same problem(peeling/flaking paint) on the same type of vehicle and was also told that i could order the paint through the local ford lincoln mercury dealership, but the problem would most likely reoccur.after my dealings with the ruston ford, lincoln, mercury dealership in ruston, lai have no desire to do any type of business with them ever again!, nor will i consider purchasing any fordor mercury vehicle in the future. I have owned 6 vehicles in the past 12 years: chevrolet corsica mitsubishi eclipse chevrolet blazer toyota forerunner toyota camry -------of these six vehicles i can honestly say that my mercury sable has by far exceeded any problems and poor service experience i have ever received!!!!on august 15th i had my oil changed and was told by the technician that there was a hissing noise coming from my air conditioner which could be signs of yet another problem in the future.all i am asking for is a little old fashioned honesty and trust in someone that will tell me whether these problemsare covered under a defect or recall claim.i look forward to hearing from someone soon. Dealership is refusing to honor the recall for the brake/accelerator pedal.after consumer has almost had 2 accident due to the defect stated in the recall.dealership is indicating that the vehicle meets specification. Ts
The consumer was disappointed with the purchase of the 2000 mercury sable which experienced more problems than a new vehicle should.(nar)*ph
After dealership measured the spacing between the brake and accelerator pedal sad it was fine, but consumer has several near accident due to the spacing of the two pedals. Ts
My 2000 mercury sable was park at my place of business....leaving for home, started up the car (boom) smoke for under the hood. The plastic intake manifold cover exploded (top of the engine) . It's going to cost me over $600 to repair and replace. Has this problem happen to everyone else..
Airbag trouble light x3 (replaced 2nd time with part from "another car"--stayed on again for short trip afterwards); engine trouble light (fixed--so far); worried about my firestone tires--not recalled so far!
A vehicle component was recalled but the vehicle could not be repaired for a few months.the consumer is not satisfied.the consumer did not state what the recall was.
At start up/ while driving smell of exhaust will come in vehicle. Defect was due to engine sensor that was replaced twice by dealer.
When consumer applies gas, the accelerator pedal will stick and thenabruptly engage.the dealership did a tempoary fix for the problem. Please provide more details. Ts
The cruise control would not stay engaged.nlm
While driving at highway speedscruise control disengages without warning or manual operation, cause unknown, vehicle has been in for repairs for thisproblem three times. Dealer cannot identify the problem.the vehcile has been to service eight times.cruise control dump valve and brake booster return spring was pointed out by the manufactures to be the cause for this failure.
While stopping at a traffic light vehicle continued to accelerate at full throttle, even when brakes were applied again, and the ignition was turned off. Vehicle accelerated through an intersection, and only stopped when the front axle broke. Vehicle was towed to a dealership, but they couldn't indicated why theacceleration failure occurred, even when a diagnostic test was performed.car kept lunging and hopping forward while the brakes were on. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable to determine d the cause of the problem.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. The contact stated whiletraveling at 40 mph, there was an unusual increase in engine rpms and the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact attempted to brake and placed the vehicle in neutral. The vehicle came to a stop and the engine was shut off. Once the contact restarted the vehicle the rpms continued to exhibit an abnormal increase. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing repairs. The contact believed the failure was due to a lose throttle. The failure and current mileages were 127,000.
Dt:2000 mercury sable.the consumer stated occasionally while at a traffic light the vehicle will idle roughly and then shut down.while at the light, he has to keep it idling by pressing the accelerator.this has been happening for approximately six weeks.the vehicle has not been looked at for this problem.
Involuntarily accelerates, unable to stop, and must be placed in neutral, and shut off.
I have a 2000 mercury sable with a speed control that cannot be turned off except by stopping the vehicle. I have had several close calls because the speed control was reactivated while driving. I cannot get any satisfaction. I am the original owner of this vehicle.
While at stand still with foot on brakes, vehicle started revving up & took off. Hit vheicle in front.second time at cross walkit happened again. Did not hit anything that time. Third time, had placed it in reverse and it took off backwardsafter revving up. Been to dealer twice for correction.
After pulling into garage vehicle suddenly accelerated and went through the garage wall.dealer andmanufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further infromation.
With foot pressed down onbrake pedal vehicle started to accelerate. Engine was racing, and vehicle suddenly took off and hit a building. Upon impact, none of the airbags deployed.driverwas unaware ofspeed. Please provide any further information.
Drove the car away from the dealer and it was running fine.stopped and got gas.then left gas station and proceeded onto the capital beltway. After a couple miles the car began accelerating on its own.the only way i could get the car stopped was to put it in neutral.the engine continued at 4000 rpms.the car was then shut off after getting it stopped on the side of the road.i found that the problem was the cruise control cable had backed out of the socket approximately a half inch and wedged over to one side holding the accelerator linkage open at the 4000 rpm level.neither myself or my mechanic have no idea why this happened and especially while driving at highway speed.the cable was pushed back over from the side and it popped back into place.i can manually pull the cable back out and there is no locking device to keep it from coming out again.i have attempted to find a new replacement cable and have not been successful.i will probably have to disconnect the cruise control for peace of mind to operate this car. This car was purchased for my son to use at college. He has practically no driving experience and i hate to think what could have happened if i let him drive the car home.
Consumer was slowing down for a light when motor suddenly revved realy high, and vehicle proceeded half way through the intersection before it stopped.*jg
Applying brakes at 5 mph or less, pedal very rigid, no power assistance in evidence, engine begins to race on its own.able to stop vehicle by shifting into neutral and standing on brake pedal.vehicle returns to normal operation after brief malfunction.compliance: owner's guide, page 223.
Brake light stays on and cruise control won't work, and vehicle will not shift out of park. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
Exited from the highway to refuel.upon fueling we intended to continue our trip as planned.car stopped at light began to accelerate for 5-10 feet.engine made a revving sound and all power was lost.all fuels look good and this car has less than 20,000 miles total because it was used sparingly by previous owner.no lights or indication gave warning that transmission would lose power.we are now seeing online that this is an issue.i had previously called dealer but kept getting hung up on.i am a widow with children and do not have the money to just tow the car to be fixed as this was our only transportation we have been limited on actually traveling to the dealership so they can check recall information for us.
While vehicle was parked in heavy trafficwithengine still running, and without any warning it suddenly accelerated and hit rear end of another vehicle.dealer stated we never heard something like this.
While driving 55 mph applied brakes, and braking distance was longer than usual.engine started racing.consumer put vehicle in neutral to slow down.
While make a left turn ontohighway vehicle suddenly acellerated and hit another vehicle. Dealership is aware ofproblem.
While making a left turn the vehicle suddenly accellerated without prior warning.the dealership is aware of the problem.nlm
Sudden acceleration on two occasions; 1st occurred at 593 miles at a service station after turning on the vehicle and shifting into gear, and2nd occurred at 894 mileswhen vehicle was going 15-20 mph and brakes were applied to bring vehicle to a complete stop.vehicle taken to dealer, and informed consumer that the computer sensor needed readjusting. The dealer reprogrammmed the pcm as the solution for engine surging.the brakes failure was due to being over powered by the engine surge.
On several occasions, the throttle stuck and car continued to accelerate at a very fast speed.mechanic ran diagnostic test and finally replaced throttle cable assembly.problem continued.i had two trips to mechanic and repaired and replaced my garage door three times because i couldn't stop the car.mileage 93119.finally gave up and traded car in.
I drove the car home after purchasing it and it was wobbling and i pulled off of the highway and did not know why it was making a loud noise. The mechanic siad a wheel bearing is broken on a tire.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated on its own while driving at various speeds. The contact also stated that there would be an increase in the engine rpms up to 4,000. The vehicle would also accelerate up to 80 mph. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The contact replaced an air control valve himself, but the failure continued. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000. The vin was not available.

The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable wagon. While driving 50 mph using the vehicle speed control he noticed that the vehicle started to accelerate. He depressed the brakes and tried turning off the vehicle speed control in order to slow the vehicle down but it continued to accelerate at a faster speed. The vehicle continued to accelerate as he pulled to the side and turned the vehicle off.he tried to restart the vehicle but it accelerated full throttle forcing him to turn the engine off a second time. He called a mechanic who inspected the vehicle but could not find any failures.after inspecting the vehicle for half an hour he restarted the vehicle and it began working normally. He took the vehicle to the dealer who advised him to call nhtsa and offered no further assistance. He called the manufacturer who also advisedhim to call nhtsa. The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.the contact was driving 65 mph when he removed his foot from the accelerator pedal and the vehicle did not decrease in speed. The vehicle continued to accelerate and the contact had to apply the brakes with both feet to get the vehicle to slow down. The contact was able to shift into park and shut off the engine. The vehicle resumed normal operation upon restarting. The dealer advised the contact to have a diagnostic test performed on the vehicle before repairs. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 85,000.
When the driver removes his foot from the gas pedal the vehicle accelerates, the dealer stated that all sable's perform this way, the consumer believes this is a design defect. Nlm
Driving vehicle on interstate with a speed of 75 mph with cruise control activated.the cruise control suddenly accelerated on its own.pushing the off button for the cruise control would not stop the acceleration as well as pushing on the brake.had to ride the brake and take the first exit available, upon stopping, the vehicle still wanted to go, put vehicle in neutral and then the engine rpm would race to over 4000 rpm and at that time the car was shut off.tried to start, started hard but rpm would race to over 4000 rpm in neutral when started.after 5 or 6 restarts and shut downs it finally came out of it this, took about about half an hour of time.did not use cruise control after that for fear of repeat.this had happened prior to this event with my wife but could not remember how long ago the event took place so did not list the event.
Consumer was activating cruise control at 70 mph when vehicle accelerated suddendly, reaching speeds of 80 mph. To avoid hitting a vehicle in front, consumer swerved into an enbankment and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.consumer will be contacting dealer to determine cause.consumer states cruise had previously been set and no more than 20 minutes later, vehicle increased speed to 80 mph in approximately 5 seconds, the safety belt prevented consumer from hitting the windshield, however did not prevent him from hitting the ceiling with his head, one person wasinjured in accident.
Upon releasingemergency parking brake vehicle took off and crashed into a garage.vehicle was parked on a very slight incline.ignition was running, and vehicle was in park when this happened. Vehicle accelerates whenbrake pedal is applied.dealer has been contacted.
While attempting to stop in traffic the vehicle accelerated suddenly and the brakes failed to stop the vehicle.as a result the consumer was involved in an accident.the driver sustained a fractured spinal cord.
While vehicle is in park can turn onignition key and vehicle will jump forward without a prior warning, and that had happened between two other vehicles.
Involuntarily accelerates, unable to stop, and must be placed in neutral, and shut off.
Engine without warning accelerated tremendously causing the car to strike first the curb, then the library wall, causing considerable damage to car and library wall, airbag did not deploy.
I was turning into a driveway, almost stopped, car accelerated even though i was stomping down on the brake.i ended up in a garage door, causing damage to my car, their car and garage door. I took car to dealer, nothing wrong.ford refuses to acknowledge any problem.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle erroneously accelerated and crashed into a gate. The contact applied constant pressure to the brake pedal and traveled approximately four car lengths before stopping. There were no injuries. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 112,000.updated 04/10/13*lj...updated 04/25/13 the consumer stated the gate crushed the right side of the vehicle from the front bumper to the rear bumper.
At 3 mph coming to a stop with foot off accelerator hit brake pedal. Car would not stop the more i hit the brake pedal engine would race finally could not hold it car took off at an increasing rate of speed even as i pushed harder on the brake pedal it was the brake pedal because if if it was the accelorator the car would have taken off faster final stopped it by shifting to neutral this car belongs to hertz corp salt lake ut they refuse to report problem so i( the driver) am reporting it!
Reporting design flaw with accelerator and brake pedals. Consumer believed that the two pedals are too close and the brake pedal does not sit high enough, this condition causes a problem when applying the the brake--also applied the accelerator pedal at same time. Dealer notified, and informedconsumer that the way the vehicle was made, and nothing else could be done at this time. *ml
Gas and brake pedals are too close together to destinguish which is which because if consumerwould put foot down on the pedal there would be a problem.
Brake and gas pedals are designed too closely together. Driver can apply both at same time or gas pedal when intending to apply brakes.
The location of the brake and accelerator are too close and are at the same height.on several occasions while stopping the foot stays on part of the accelerator pedal and actually increases the engine speed while trying to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.when looking at the location of the two pedals it looks like a design issue.this vehicle is driven by three persons and all have had the same problem.discussed this with the dealer representative and he indicated nothing was wrong with the vehicle (breaking system) and it was something the drivers would have to be aware of when stopping this vehicle.
While driving on city street traveling 20mph, went to adjust the power adjustable pedal which is located on the driver side seat. Instead, hit the button and caused vehicleto accelerate unexpectedly.there was no safety lock feature.there is a potential risk involved.contacted the manufacturer and consumer union.in the owners manual there is a small mention of not using the adjustable pedal feature while vehicle is in motion.
Brake pedaland accelerator pedalare side by sidedue to a new design feature that lowers or raisesbrake pedal and accelerator pedal, causing pedal misapplication.
Gas and brake pedals are too close together when either accelerating or braking. This causes a problem withbraking or acceleration.foot can engage both pedals at once. Can or will cause an accident. Dealership and manufacturer indicated nothing could be done.
When accelerating from a stop, vehicle jerked/surged into a gear and suddenly accelerated. Ph abs possilby caused brakes to pulsate when coming to a stop.
Pe 02 035: brake/accelerator pedal separation: "adjustable pedal;" while applying brake pedal, foot simultaneously applied to the accelerator pedal and forced vehicle into a rear end collision. Dealer and manufacturer were not notified at this time.*yd
Brakepedal and gas pedal are too close together. When vehicle is in reverse and they put foot on the brakes they hitgas pedal, and vehiclelaunches back.also, when driving on the highway.
Adjustable gas and brake pedals too close-turning into space or pulling into garage-if not to left side of brake pedal-tendency to also apply gas same time as brake-car lungesforward/can cause an accident if do not react quickly.need to change shaft on brake pedal to bend it furher to left to provide more space from the gas pedal.
While pulling out of a gas station consumer tried to step on the brake, but instead hit both, gas pedal and the brake pedal, and ran into a telephone post.
Consumerpressesgas/brake pedal at the same time because they are to close. *mj
Brake and accelerator pedals are made too close together, causing pedal misapplication. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified.
While stopping at a stop sign vehicle suddenly accelerated. Consumer foot was on the brake pedal when the acceleration occurred. Consumer immediately put the vehicle into neutral. This stopped the acceleration.then, consumer reversed the vehicle slightly and tilted the steering wheel to the right before putting the vehicle back into drive and accelerating.
Consumer states power adjustable pedals on his vehicle, which he believe were designed to close together, consumers foot engaged both pedals resulting in acceleration and accident on two occassions.
Gas pedal keeps sticking, causing vehicle to idles high . Currently at dealer.
Several times i've applied the brake pedal and the car continued to move forward, it is my belief that the brake and accelerator pedals may be too close.
After reading a recent news article about this safety concern i wanted to report my experience with my 2000 mercury sable in interest in having the design flaw fixed. While attempting to stop at an intersection by stepping on the brake pedal, the gas pedal also became pressed causing the car to accelerate and lunge forward as the braking action and acceleration action opposed each other. I'm concerned that inherent in the cars' design the pedals are located too close together, creating a safety concern. I was able to react quickly enough to put the car in neutral and stop the car before hitting the car in front of me. . only to realize after the fact that what had happened is that my foot was pressing both pedals while attempting to stop. Car has adjustable pedals.
The contact owns a 2000 mercury sable.while driving approximately 20 mph on normal road conditions, the accelerator pedal extended to the floor without resistance when it was depressed.there was no power response.the vehicle was inoperable and was pushed to the side of the road, and then to the contact's residence.there were no warning indicatorsilluminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 70,000.updated 05/27/09. *ljthe dealer replaced a broken accelerator cable. Updated 05/28/09.

The cruise control does not disengage (turn off) while in motion unless you tap the brakes, which could cause a car crash.
Cruise control switch/controller - cannot disengage cruise control via on/off switch, only by turning off the ignition switch. Tapping the brakes will deactivate the cruise function but will not turn it off. We had a near miss of an accident several times because of this problem. Oem manufacturer refused to repair this situation because vehicle was out of warranty.
While driving and without warning the electrical system failed.*nlm on several occasions, the brake lights remained on and/or came on by themselves after the engine was cut off.defective brake light switch assembly had to be replaced.cruise control would not deactivate at 76 mph.
Intermittently when applying the brakesmotor started to race and the brakes won't hold. The more consumer pressed on the brake pedal, the faster the motor went, causingunwanted acceleration. Vehicle was taken todealership twice.dealership was not able to find any problems with the vehicle.*ml
Vehicle would start to spontaneously accelerate on its on power. Afterengine was turned onand the gearchanged to drive, vehicle would jump on its own.whilevehicle accelerated, brakes started to malfunction, andvehicle could only stop when the complete engine was turned off.this has happened on two different occasions. Dealer had advised consumer that the vehicle was in "perfect condition".defect can cause consumer to lose control andan accident. The accelerator and brake pedals engage simultaneously.the pedals are set unusually close together.the driver has no means to know the state of pedal adjustment.
When the consumer tried to turn the headlights on the switch button came off. *nlmboth rear windows had become inoperative.scc

While driving down the freeway the back window shattered.there is no apparent reason for it.the glass also broke into slivers.i was under the impression that auto's had to had safety glass to prevent injuries?the dealer states it is tempered glass but this window shattered for no reason and then the glass splintered and fell into the car. Covering the back of the car and thank goodness that my 5 year old daughter was in the front seat or she would have been seriously injured.as it is we still had to use tape to remove the small slivers of glass from her cheek.
Airbag and abs lights on control panel come on intermittently. Happens when consumer usespower windows. Whenbrakes are depressed, alldash lights go dim. Vehicle has not been involved in an accident.
Thank you,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The rear brake lights did not illuminate when the brake was applied.*nlm the brake light switch was replaced 4 times which one out of the 4 repairs was recall related.also the abs light was illuminated.once the switch failed the shifter would not come out of park position.on another occasion, the sun roof was inoperative.
Sun roof fails to close properly. Would move very slowly and in a jerky motion. Sometimes topping in middle of track while closing.problem has not been resolved. Will be taking vehicle to dealership to check it.

While driving 12-15 mph left front wheel disconnectedfrom the vehicle. Dealer was not notified.
