The steering is horible, about 3years ago changed rack appion steering, and just a week ago, put new steering pump on, still.

Dt*:the contact stated the cover over the passenger side airbag is separating from the dash.the vehicle has not been in an accident.the dealership was alerted, but the vehicle has not been seen by a mechanic.

Vehicle was involved in a head on crash at 45 mph.neither airbag deployed.police, fire, rescue, towing company, autobody and delaership all said "something is wrong with this vehicle, airbags should have gone off, you should have this checked out."attempted for three months to get ford to send a ford representative to investigate.ford legal got involved, all they ever said (verbally) is "the car is safe"and refused to have anyone from ford look at the system.ford legal was more concerned about an injury lawsuit than a possible defect.ford legal told me "if you suspect there's a problem with your airbags, you should take it up with your insurance company."figure that one out!

While driving at 45 mph consumer was hit onside ofvehicle,knockingvehicle into a pole, andair bags deployed and exploded.consumer hit steering wheel oppositetoair bag.

Consumer was involved in a 30 mph side impact collision in which the driverand passenger front airbags failed to deploy. Consumer's vehicle was not equipped with side airbags, however the front airbag sensors should have been triggered because side of vehicle was smashed. Dealer has been contacted. One person was injured in the accident.

While driving on highway at 55 mph, suddenly steering wheel went out of control to the right, causing vehicle to do a 180 degree turn,then rolled over two complete turns. Upon impact,air bags failed to deploy, resulting in minor injuries. Dealer/manufacturer have been notified.

The check engine light came on.the car started smoking from under the hood.then the smoke started coming inside the car from the dashboard.after that the car caught fire under the hood and the car was on fire.almost everything under the hood burned up.the car is not drivable.

On several occasions, after driving my 1999 mercury sable station wagon in moderate to heavy rain, i lose power steering during turns.the alternator light also comes on.i believe the problem is related to excessive belt slippage from water.it goes away if i stop for a few seconds to let the belt regain traction.this condition occurs unexpectedly is a risk to loss of control during the period of time without power steering.

Engine cooling system is faulty. I have had 3 freeze plugs replaced in engine over past year and a half at cost of $500.00iam told if the others rust behind the engine it will be another $500.00 just had the system flushed last year, now it is rusty again. Cooling system is corrosive! does that make sense?

1999 mercury sable ls vin - [xxx] car was bought new from copper country ford 12/16/98 warranty - 36,000 miles / 6 years ----------------------------------------------- at approx 36,095 miles oct 2004 i had to replace the rack and pinion steering. Seeing as how i was over the warranty, i called the ford mo. Co and asked if there was anything they would do.town & country ford (local ford dealer in my town) said they would charge me for the labor only. April 11, 2005 with approx 38,000 miles it started to leak oil. I took it to town & country and they said it needed a new oil pan gasket. They repaired it at my expense. Approx a month later, it was leaking again. Took it in, and they said they fixed it... Oil pan gasket needed some tweeking, so they said. I took it to have its normal 3000 mi oil check days later, and the man who looked at my engine said the fan belt was shredded, and could not believe someone was working on my engine days prior and did not fix it or tell me about it.i had the fan belt replaced. Oct 13, 2005 my car is still leaking oil. I took it to town & country ford, and now they tell me i need a new engine.....because the block is cracked.i asked if maybe the oil leak that had started in april may have been due to the cracked block, to which i never got an answer.when i asked why the block was cracked, the answer i got was "its made of aluminum, and sometimes these things happen." current mileage is approx 40,000.i just called the ford motor co and they said there are no programs associated with this car to help me and that there is nothing they can do. While driving in heavy rain storm, engine crankshaft pulley assy broke causing the loss of power steering immediately, i struggled to maintain control of vehicle. I had repaired at local shopin long island ,ny , mechanic said new replacement unit was much different than original indicating that there was problem with design of original unit.had i not been able to steer vehicle there could have been a collision resulting in injuries , etc. I checked recalls & there were non related to this mechanical failure. I paid $309.91 for repairs to vehicle. The contact owns a 1999 mercury sable.while driving at an unknown speed, the consumer drove over a small puddle of water, which caused the power steering to lock up.a few seconds later, the power steering returned.the contact believes that the steering fails whenever the serpentine belt gets wet.the belt must dry off before he can gain control of the vehicle.the vehicle has not been diagnosed.the failure has occurred between five and six times. Fumes inside car noticed, and a slight strange sound from car when running. When taken to shop to find problem, a crack was noticed at the y shaped pipe connecting to both catalytic converters. In order to repair this the whole system has to be replaced even though the converters are fine.

Reporting raw fuel is getting into the vaporized systm, causing vehicle to stall while driving. Seeking help from nhtsa on this matter or provide additional information.

While making a left turn withturn signal and windshield wipers on,windshield wiper fluid would automatically come out.visiblity would be very difficult since the fluid came out unexpectedly, and consumer could get into anaccident.

Fuel was leaking from the fuel filter line onto the exhaust pipe while driving.the vehicle was towed to the dealer for repairs.the vehicle was leaving the driveway when gas was smelled.the consumer looked underneath the vehicleand viewed gasoline squirting across the entire width of the vehicle.the plastic "elbow" that was attached to the front fuel line and the fuel filter was cracked. *sc

I have problems getting into the fuel tank.it continually shuts off and/or spills gas on the ground.i did take the time to fight it once to get it filled up, but that took approx. 15 minutes.otherwise, i can only pump enough gas in to register 1/2 to 3/4 full.

Last thursday or friday, i had left my house to fill the gas tank on my 1999 mercury sable wagon.the tank was just about full when a child walked by and shouted, hey mister, somethings coming out from under your car.sure enough, the service station attendant and i both looked, and gasoline was pouring, and i mean pouring from the top of the gas tank.i called aaa and immediately had them tow the car to the local dealer, chapman ford, in bridgeton, nj.they have replaced a cannister having to do with the emissions, and some other parts.i am just lucky that this kid came by, or i might have been driving a firebomb.i am waiting, and have been waiting for one week, to have the ford factory rep call me.i am complaining about the bill, since the car has only 42,000 miles on it, but that has nothing to do with the safety issue. The car is still at the dealers location as of today.

The incident i am writing about relates to the electric door locks on the 1999 mercury sable. After many months of having passenger side door locks not responding to the driver or passenger side controls, i took the car in for repairs to my local mechanic. $450 later the mechanic was able to replace the problem parts with the statement that mercury was having a lot of problems with this series of locking mechanism's and it appeared mercury had a wide spread, pervasive problem. I consider this an unsafe condition as it prevents the driver from insuring that all doors are locked when transporting young children without the driver exiting the vehicle or crawling across to the opposite side to lock the passenger side doors. What can be done to track this problem and how can mercury be required to consider this a recall issue and take steps to correct and replace the door locking mechanism?

Speedometor keeps going down to 0, sometimes engine races, and vehicle will slow down, like it's in neutral.please provide any further information.

I bought a used 1999 mercury sable gs with the u type 3.0l v6 engine 2 months ago. Just recently i noticed the car wanting to lunge forward while holding the brake at stops. Then a few days later whenever i start the car it lunges forward. Nothing dramatic but definitely noticeable. I started looking online to see about a recall and 1 was present a long time ago. Is it to late to get my car checked or how to see if it was ever serviced or called for the recall.

Consumer states she attempted to put vehicle in reverse, the engine felt as if it was going to fall out, consumer contacted dealership and vehicle was taken in for a transmission overhaul and repairs on three occassions.

Problems with transmission caused vehicle to stop.*mr while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stopped, and failed to accelerated when the pedal was pushed.

Car has always shifted hard.at approximately 90k miles automatic transmission started to fail evidenced by gear slippage and car decellerating while being driven.transmission pump was also "knocking".car was taken to transmission shop and they stated that a 10 cent "o" ring had failed in the transmission pump and that the transmission pump had literally "come apart". Also, the transmission pan had a smal, shiny indention where the pump was located, further evidence of where the problem possibly originated. They had also stated that they have seen numerous tuarus' and sables with the same problem.transmission was completely rebuilt at a cost of $1700.00 and the pump was replaced with one with ametallic "o" ring to help eliminate further failures. I personally take great care and pride with my vehicles and on average have checked all fluid levels, including the transmission fluid on a bimonthly bases.the transmission failure was rather sudden with no warning, to include an engine light.

Transmission had to be replacedtwic within 8 month period.

Hard upshift and downshift while coming to a stop or pulling away. Once vehicle was stopped it would have a tendency at times to lurch forward while brake was on.. Upon taking the transmission down, the dealer found clutch material in transmission the ss3 was sticking, the accumulator o-ring was cut the forward drum ck.vall sticint overdrive band burned and needed to exchange the entire transmission. Thankfully the trany was under warranty. However, now the repaired assy is only covered for 12000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first and we are naturally concerned that this might be a defect as the ford taures seemed to have trany problems in the 1197 to 1999 range which is why we did not buy one but went with the sable after checking nhtsa reports re: the vehicle itself.

Transmission temporarily fails to shift when accelerating or braking.

Note******i did not have any failures!! my reason for writing is to complain about the frequent shifting of the automatic transmission. In addition, the brakes vibrate at high speed usually between 55-70 when braking. To be fair i reported and had the car serviced when the brakes first vibrated. The service manager reported that there were heat marks on the disc's. My principal driving is highway with limited braking. The dealer shaved the rotors (which bothered me given that there was less then 10,000 miles at the time), and the vibration disappeared. I am however once again seeing some slight vibration. Tire wear appears to be normal. Getting back to the rotors, i am concerned that the life of the rotors having been cut will be short.as for the transmission this has just started, and i haven't yet scheduled a service call. I have spoken to several people who own either taurus's or sables's and the recurring problem seems to be the transmissions. What do you guys say?

While driving transmission will slip out of gears, causing the vehicle not to have any power. Dealer notified.

Odor of hot transmission fluid / oil entering interior at vents, vehicle at operating temperature. Most noticable at complete stop. No leaks visible, suspect fumes from transmission vent being drawn into air intake for ac system past the opening of the hood hinges at cowl.

Consumer experiencing problem with dealerhonoring mfr. Recall notice # 98s-31 & nhtsa recall 98v-288 000 concerning ford/ transmssion oil cooler line . An incorrect transmission oil cooler line was installed, the line contacts the anti-lock braking system module support bracket and overtime. Can wear and develop a leak onto the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter, which can result in a fire.

Transmission shift linkage cable broke at a bend.

When shifting the car into reverse it would hesitate and would eventually shift after repeated attempts. After a couple days the car would not shift into reverse from park but would if it was first put into drive and then reverse. Then it would not shift into any gear and would freely coast on an incline. I had to have the car towed on a flatbed from my driveway to a dealership. They had it for 5 days, did not fix it correctly and i had to take it back in for service. The shift cable had to be replaced.

Driver's seat belt does not latch securely everytime.seat belt becomes unlatched while driving for no apparant reason.this problem occurred many times since the purchase two years ago.i rarely have passengers so it is unknown if problem extends to the other seat belts.

Vehicle's driver side seat belt defective.*mrwhen pushed into the socket to secure the driver, it would pop out and would not remain unless forced.the belt would also tighten and fit snug to the point where the driver was unable to lean forward.(the consumer would be unable to see if anyone was coming)the dealer would not fix the vehicle.*scc

The drivers side seat belt on my 99 mercury sable does not latch and lock all the time. It goes in and acts like it latches (seat belt light goes out) until a fair amount of force is applied to the seat belt and it release's from the seat belt latch. I've had this happen multitudes of times even thought i try and remember to double check that the seat belt is secure.

The rear center shoulder belt hooks over a pin on the buckle.there is no positive lock or unlock mechanism.we followed the instructions in the owner's manual about how to connect the rear center shoulder belt.the shoulder belt suddenly disconnects when the passenger happens to move a certain way.the belt rapidly retracts and the metal buckle hits the right rear passenger in the face or eye.a positve lock should be installed so the rear center shoulder belt will stay latched until it is intentionally released.this car was rented from hertz company in maui, hawaii, so i do not know details such as vin number.

I purchased the used vehicle april 03. Early august, i went out to lunch with a friend-when he attempted to put on the vehicle seat belt in the front passenger seat it would not work. We drove his car instead. I thought it was a fluke. I decided to check the internet and located this problem as a manufacturer recall and figured it would be no problem for the dealer to take care of it. This problem continued to happen but because of my work schedule i was unable to get the vehicle to the dealer because of the hours of the service department. Fromaugust to date no one has been able to ride in the front seat. I was on vacation and i contacted the dealer to schedule a service appointment. I took the car in on 12/30/03 and was told that i needed to pay a $75 diagnostic fee as no information came up for this vehicle indicating a recall or a warranty. The warranty situation was corrected but i received a message from tonia cooper (service department) after i faxed over the recall information from nhtsa that my vehicle would not be covered under the recall. I thought this was absurd; i am experiencing the same problem that is noted on all of the documentation of the recall but because ford neglected to include my vin number no one would help me. What's worse is that i called fords' customer relations on 12/30/03 and spoke with syed who refused to give me a last name or an id# and he told me there was nothing i could do and no one outside of customer relations at the dealership that i could contact to get this matter resolved. I find it most irritationg that no one could conceive the notion that this vin# (& perhaps others) were erroneously omitted from the recall. I looked at the 3 complaints from other owners & one has a vin#very similiar to mine.thank you for your assistance in this matter, i only wish that i could have resolved this matter with ford directly. Passenger safety & michigan's "click it or ticket it" law has makes this an extrememly important issue!

Seat belt retractors are failing in order of most frequent use (e.g. Driver, front passenger, rear passengers). The driver's belt retractor fails to pull the seat belt back into the columnar storage area 100% of the time (front passenger belt 50% and rear passengers ~10%).this presents a safety hazard as the belts will not provide the life saving tension required during an accident. The belt hangs limp over the wearer. Seat belts are required to be worn by law. Yet, auto manufacturers are not required to warranty these parts for the life of the car. The great majority of manufacturers only warrant seat belts for 3 years or 36000 miles. As consumers, are we to believe that this means manufacturers only expect the seat belts to function during this time period. This is absurd and should be changed via legislation requiring auto makers to warranty legally required safety devices for the life of the car. It would force manufacturers to make these parts to last instead of engineering them to last until just after the warranty period is over.

Was driving in stop-and-go traffic near holland tunnels in nyc when brakes failed without warning.went to stop and pedal traveled completely to floor.had to use emergency brake to stop.2 hour wait for tow truck, so decided to try driving again after 1 hour.brakes appeared to function normally thereafter, although a little spongy at first.

Total casastropic brake faiure. With my wife driving we encountered a toll plaza on the garden state parkway in new jersey. My wife attemped to slow the car and at that point exclaimed, "i have no brakes"....we went though the toll booths and stopped the car about 100 feet away using the emergency/parking brake.i opened the hood, and checked the level of brake fluid, it was full. I got behind the wheel and started the car and put it in drive. I too found the brake pedal on 'on the floor' with no stopping power, even at low crawl/idle speed. I again stopped the car using the only means, the parking brake.we had the car towed using a new jersey authorized tow company to their facilities. They cheked the car, drove it, pulled all four wheels and found no problem. They test drove the car and found they were unable to duplicate my problem, brakes worked normally. We drove homeabout 150 miles using caution and the brakes worked normally as they are working now.we are two mature, well experienced drivers, and i am in the auto parts/repair business. I know with certainty that i had no brakes at the toll plaza, and my wife confirms that. 1)rack & pionion rod:at approximately 55000 miles, the rack and pinion seal blew out.this could have caused the power steering to fail and result in an accident.there was no viable reason for this componenet to fail.the car has never been in any kind of an accident.repairs were approximately $700.2) front axle/abs:a problem with braking began and resulted in brakes slipping and vibrating, causing a sound of metal on metal.upon inspection it was determined that the ring/gear on the front drivers side of the axel was originally installed incorrectly.the gear should be approximately 3/8" from the bolts for the front wheels.however, in this instance, the gear has been grinding away the bolts.there is no evidence of the gear "slipping"it is and has always been in the same spot.this causes metal shavings to fall onto the abs sensor and results in the abs not working.this is a safety issue and could result in a crash due to the abs not working.ford does not seem to want to fix this item even though it is clear that the car originally came from the manufacturer with this problem.

Note******i did not have any failures!! my reason for writing is to complain about the frequent shifting of the automatic transmission. In addition, the brakes vibrate at high speed usually between 55-70 when braking. To be fair i reported and had the car serviced when the brakes first vibrated. The service manager reported that there were heat marks on the disc's. My principal driving is highway with limited braking. The dealer shaved the rotors (which bothered me given that there was less then 10,000 miles at the time), and the vibration disappeared. I am however once again seeing some slight vibration. Tire wear appears to be normal. Getting back to the rotors, i am concerned that the life of the rotors having been cut will be short.as for the transmission this has just started, and i haven't yet scheduled a service call. I have spoken to several people who own either taurus's or sables's and the recurring problem seems to be the transmissions. What do you guys say?

I'm having trouble with the brake rotors warping every six to eight months.they usally turn or replace the rotos.i called ford in detroit on the problem but they are saying its nomal wear and tear.but if you go to the dealership they say they replace alot of these rotors and that this is normal .but when my car goes out warrnity at its 3/36000 miles the problem will become my problem.i don't think this normal and should be researched. I have been told that ford has had numerous problems with brake rotors but they put it off on customers driving habits.i work at a competors dealership and drive all day and don't have this problem with the van that i drive on a daily basis.if you could help it would bre appreciated... While driving, consumer lost all brakes and brake light came on, dealer found leak in rear cylinder and replaced both cylinders, consumer felt lucky because there was no accident and no injuries.

Rear subframe connection passenger side rusted through due to factory put air conditioner condensate line so that it constantly dumps condensate on this area instead of draining condensate beyond and to the ground. The result is a rusted out severed connection thereby causing the engine and transmission to be held by only three of the four connections needed to safely hold engine and transmission as designed from the factory.

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision at 40 mph, and neither air bag deployed. Dealer and manufacturer were not notified at this time. Consumer stated that the ash try would not stay inplace due to center cosole failure and was replaced.

Subframe of vehicle is severely rusted to the point where it is structurally unsound.most of the body rot is covered by the plastic molding under the doors, and is not visible until the molding is removed.it seems that water and road salt must get trapped between the molding and metal leading to the extensive rust.the frame breaking while driving at highway speeds would lead to a catastrophic failure which could cause a potentially fatal accident.

Car was two years old when purchased, and had 60k miles.i noted that car would shake, especially during braking.i also noted that vehicle pulled to one side during braking.i took car to shop and found that the brake discs had to be turned due to warpage.(i was told that this was common on these vehicles, including tuarus')this eleviated most of the problems, but was told that the tie rods, and tie rod ends were wore out and had to be replaced.i personally looked at the original tie rods after they were replaced and noted that they were wore out. This problem could have possibly resulted in premature braking and lose of control of the vehicle.there was a notable difference in the braking distance and ability to control vehicle at higher speeds.i still have the original tie rods, and ends.

There were no events leading up to the failure. Coil spring failed and broke going out of our driveway, puncturing inner side wall of front left tire. We got a replacement strut and coil spring assembly from a salvage yard costing $53.30. New tire costing $59.73. Old coil spring showed no signs of abnormal corrosion so it should not have failed. Which is ridiculous! i never even received a recall notice on the car we found the recall online. Also the rear coil springs are broken and the tires are messed up and ford won't recall them if salt is going to get in the front coil springs and make them crack then what makes you think that it won't get in the rear? we have small children and are worried about their safety. We will be getting a lawyer and file a complaint through him because this car is not safe for anyone to be in let alone children. I think they should worry about safety and not mass production.

While traveling at approximately 35 miles per hour on a two lane road i saw a tire tread shoot in front of my vechicle. I then heard a loud noise coming from the rear of my automobile i attempted to pull over and stop. The entire cap part of the tire was missing. Only the side walls remained. It took me quite some time to obtain tow service because i has in a dead zone for my cell phone. The tow truck driver which changed my tire said he would take care of the old cap. I was so tired from this ordeal and long wait for the tow truck after having to walk until i was able to get a cell signal that i did not think to save the cap. Controlling the car to a stop was very stressfull. There is damage to the mag whell and to the guards that surround that tire. On a recently purchased 1999 mercury sable there are minute scratches within the area of the windshield swept by the wipers.these scratches act as a refractor causing glare when traveling toward the sun and from oncoming vehicles lights and overhead street lights, etc.upon further investigation it was noted that when the washer was actuated that the wipers would make an upward sweep prior to fluid being dispensed onto the windshield.the wiper action scoured the windshield with the dirt or deposits on the glass causing these scratches.my wife stated the glare is similar to that she experience prior to her cataract surgeries.from a recent discussion with a service manager of a ford dealer it was learned that most late model ford products washer operate the same way, i.e. The washer pump motor and wiper motor are energized simultaneously and the delay of the fluid application is due the fluid having to be pumped from a remote reservoir. The front windshield wiper turns on by itself, sometimes it only goes on once and other times it will do it for a few times. It used to only happen once every few months, now there are days that it happens every few minutes. I have not taken the car to the dealer yet, because i want to get more information on this to see if it will become a recall or not (since others have had the same problem).

I own a 1999 mercury sable, bought it new. Since i have owned the car, windshield wipers will turn on periodically. This might happen no more than once or twice a year. Recently, while driving in a rainstorm, the washer fluid started to sprayeed out. It only lasted a split second and so far has not happened again. The washer fluid is a new occurence; before, it was just the wipers coming on and swishing a time or two.

My mercury sable front windshield wipers turn on intermittently when you use the blinker and sometimes when you are just holding the steering wheel.especially on a sunny day, this defect is a startling occurrence and could lead to an accident.i experienced the same problem on my other two 1999 ford vehicles.my 1999 expedition did the same thing and the multifunction switch was replaced under the ford program number 00b40.my 1999 taurus also did the same thing and the multifunction switch was replaced under the 36,000-mile warranty.this is obviously a known problem to ford and should be addressed.if it has happened to three 1999 vehicles in the same household, i am sure the problem is much more widespread and a safety recall is in order.

Aluminum wheel corrosion of my 1999 mercury sable leads to constant pressure lost. Dealer cannot repair, not covered under extended warranty.if tire pressure is important why is this not a safety defect?

The contact owns a 1999 mercury sable ls. While driving 35 mph the vehicle drifted off of the road and into a wooded area.he sustained minor injuries. Upon further inspection he noticed that the corrosion on the chrome plated wheel caused the passenger front tire to lose pressure. All four wheels were replaced with alloyed wheels. The failure and current mileages were 122,000. Updated 04/01/10the tire lost air pressure as a result of chroming of the tire sealing area. Updated 07/19/

Rims on 1999 mercury sable are corroding (not easily visable, but when you pull the tires off). Will cause leakage of air out of tires. Dealerships will not even look at problem, says they are not covered.also windshield wipers will occasionally just come on.

Rear left tire consistently low, even after being filled and re-filled on a weekly basis.after taking to a service station, mechanic stated the rim was faulty and tire was separating from the rim.they sealed the tire to the rim.after having all tires replaced a few months later, same issue with same rear left tire.different mechanic also stated upon inspection that rim was warped.car has not been in an accident, nor abused.rims are standard manufacturers.
